ranking daniel miller outfits because apparently I have nothing better to do right now
an extremely long one y’all, so it’s under the cut
started at the bottom, now we’re.... still here at the bottom of the list
the running outfit. y’know. that one
look, I know it’s the middle of winter in Berlin and Daniel’s doing his best, but there is something about this that is just not that great. still looks 100x better than my running outfit but I think it’s the beanie that really gives this last place. or is it the double beanie? either way, not an outfit I would wear to try and romance my girl in (even if you are exercising with them). the only real redeeming feature of the outfit is the black turtleneck all zipped up
1.8/10
the sneaky sneaky boy outfit
the perfect outfit for the job because it’s completely unremarkable. the ‘hood over cap’ combo makes me expect to see a 20 year old hacker skulking about under there, but wait - surprise... it’s a handsome middle-aged man?
RA can rock a cap or hood but the double-combo just doesn’t do it for me. I guess I can be happy the third hood isn’t up as well to form a trifecta?
Daniel may need to be sneaky to do his job but I would argue that if I saw a man with a hood over his cap in broad daylight chilling in a cemetery I would have more questions than if I just saw a regularly dressed man chilling in a cemetery in broad daylight
3/10
almost every s1 suit
look, RA looks fantastic in a suit and no one is disputing that. I’m just saying that this is about as bland a suit and tie combo as it gets and from my recall of season one we see this almost every single time he’s in the station.
this one is even a bland grey. grey has it’s place but in the office it can turn into a bit of a snooze. mix up your office-wear & make it fun Daniel. wear a cool-coloured tie. put some funny socks on.
4/10
the casual summer businessman
something bothers me about this. is it the combo of the untucked shirt and the khaki pants? on their own either is fine
or is it just that this is one of the first times we see Daniel and the look has almost no personality to it? who knows
4.1/10 (for the unbuttoned collar and rolled-up sleeves)
the casual summer businessman goes to a bbq
almost the exact same outfit as the casual summer businessman, but the shirt’s a different colour which somehow makes it a lot better
this man wouldn’t look out of place at a bbq, which is a great choice from the styling team considering Daniel actually wears this to the team bbq in the show
4.5/10 solely for just being a bit plain and boring
I’ve finished filing those papers you wanted
no tie and one undone button? Daniel, you tease!
4.6/10
sneaky sneaky boy part 2
this is what I’m talking about. I still find people wearing caps indoors incredibly suspicious for someone trying to blend in (possibly because I was raised to believe that hats were an outdoors only look) but Daniel looks like a grown man and no longer looks like he should be a 20 year old hacker. success!
4.6/10 for an ultra-casual Daniel
I’m just here to file some papers and get paid
see? same suit every time. at least this one’s a nice black which is an upgrade from the grey and really suits RA
4.7/10
every day is a work day if you try hard enough - the winter edition
a non-matchy-matchy blue tie! a winter coat! a turned up collar! it may not be exciting but at least now we’re cooking
in all fairness though, our coat is quite dull and anonymous and the only real notable thing about it is the choice to keep the collar upturned. nothing to write home about if it wasn’t for the RA attached to it
4.7/10
every day is a work day if you try hard enough - the winter edition pt. 2
the hooded coat makes for a nice relaxation of the business suit. other than that, not much to say.
4.73/10
once more unto the (lapel) breach
we find ourselves having to ask: is Daniel Miller really Daniel Miller if his coat lapel isn’t popped?
this the FBI man who turns up at your house to either arrest you or escort you to safety. oh, sorry, CIA I guess given the context of the show
looks great because of RA being the one wearing it but a fairly mundane look
4.8/10
up, up, and away
bicycle Daniel was a nice look which I wasn’t expecting out of this show. mainly because I have never ever in my life seen a man in a suit on a bike.
in NZ they all use cars and at the very least bike in casual clothes then get changed at work. is biking in suits a European thing?
there’s absolutely nothing special or spectacular about the clothes, but put Daniel on a bike and it works really well?
maybe it’s the cape effect or leather gloves. or even just the notion of seeing a fully-dressed business man in a suit whiz by you on a bicycle.
whatever it is, it’s appreciated
4.8/10
the party boy
in s1 Daniel has only one look if he’s going out on the town - he ditches the tie & opens two buttons (or three if he’s feeling saucy)
I’ll never complain about this this look because let’s be honest, who would, but we also need to face reality that, like his suits, it’s also a bit repetitive and lacks a bit of something after seeing it for the 5th episode in row
4.9 /10
it might be time for you to go to bed
the party boy has finally lost his ‘I’m too cool for you’ vibe and partied his jacket and several shirt buttons off (quite literally). bonus points for the completely rumpled shirt and hair
the only thing that is eye-catching in this outfit is the skin it reveals
4/10
puzzle time *finger guns* (to anyone who didn’t grow up in New Zealand quoting this ad I apologise)
now this is a Daniel I would sit down and do a puzzle with. which is probably a good thing as he is quite literally solving a puzzle in this scene
5/10 for evoking the correct feeling from the audience but otherwise there is nothing special here
is mission impossible hiring?
the gloves? the backpack? the jacket and zipped sweater? you see this man and know your mainframe is about to be hacked
not the worst. but not the best. love the zipped sweater, could lose the gloves.
5.5/10
let’s get cozy
now this is a dapper fellow. the thin black scarf? brilliant with the signature coat collar
a Daniel who would probably lend you his coat or scarf if you complained about the cold
5.6/10
someone who would feed the ducks at the park
this is how to put in RA in a baseball cap. the subtle tartan of his scarf, which is tied in a knot? the perfect winter spy outfit
this is a Daniel you want to go on walks in a park with.
5.8/10
uncle Daniel goes on a trip to the mall
the more I look at that jacket the more I appreciate it. It’s a stunning blue which makes a nice contrast to the usual dull grey of his sweater and is a colour that looks great on RA. It even has some quilting for added interest
5.96/10
he’s the ‘fun uncle’
the warm sweater and scarf? this is the uncle who takes you out to do fun things while you’re supposed to be grounded and tells you not to tell your mom
nothing amazing in this outfit but also nothing to complain about considering it’s in s1. a funner, casual side to Daniel we don’t often see (am I bitter about never seeing his cousin and her son after s1? a little)
a solid 6/10
hope is fragile and also a black sweater
the fact that we never see this sweater on its own is what lets it down here
putting that to one side, the snuggly sweater? the green bomber jacket? this is a classic s2 Daniel look. but hang on - this is from s1?
Daniel’s letting us know via this s1 outfit that it will all be good in the near future if we can just hang on until he gets his s2 wardrobe
6.1/10 for providing hope for the future
hello? it’s your future ex-boyfriend calling
this man isn’t Daniel Miller - he’s a career model who can GET IT and he knows it
6.6/10
comfy sweater boy
so simple but so, so, so good
this is a Daniel I would want to cuddle up on a couch with. he’s a soft boy who wouldn’t hurt anyone and probably makes a great hot chocolate
6.7/10
comfy sweater boy goes for a walk outside
the colour of his sweater goes nicely with the coat. and once again: is he really Daniel Miller if his collar isn’t popped?
he loses 0.1 of a point for losing a bit of the soft boy look that the sweater just by itself brought to the party
6/10
comfy sweater boy ran out of hot chocolate at his so comes round to your place for takeaway
I just really enjoy the colour of this sweater, okay? the easy, layered sweater look? the takeaway chinese? this is a man after my heart and I’m also pretty sure I’ve worn this exact outfit before
6.1/10
if looks could kill
leather jacket? perfect. but what really brings this together? the black v-neck of course. RA never wears enough v-necks
‘nuf said
6.9/10
the Adam Price moment
this is one of the rarest of cases - a s2 outfit that wasn’t a 100% hit for me. everything about this outfit slaps except for the polo shirt
blue bomber jacket? hell yeah. hidden orange detailing on the inside? that’s what I’m talking about. colour combo of shirt and jacket? well done
polo shirt itself? meh. even if it was just a plain polo that would have been great. for some reason the embroidered logo and collar stripes push me over the edge
I don’t know why but whenever I see a man in a polo shirt like this, I immediately think they are heading to the golf course and are probably not the type of person I would chill with (given that I don’t play golf)
on Adam Price? sure. on Daniel Miller? nah, he knows better
7/10 (mainly for the bomber)
guess who’s back? back again. Adam’s back. tell a friend
I know this is lower ranked than most of the outfits on this entire list but is still found at the upper end of this list. That’s ‘cause it just had to come after the Adam Price moment, okay?
they took everything that was wrong with the Adam Price moment (e.g. the entire polo shirt) and then focused our attention on it
it doesn’t matter how tightly it clings to RA’s body, it’s not overriding my unjustified hatred of polo shirts
3.5/10
I’m here to make important calls while I dine in a fine restaurant
another updated suit look post-s1. I picture this Daniel eating at a nice Italian restaurant for lunch before returning to work for an important business conference
and is that a textured shirt I spy? well done
7.3/10
the shirt is even better without the jacket.
the undone buttons? c’mon
it’s just a nice shirt okay
7.5/10
comfy sweater boy’s older brother
for one thing, those low-slung sweatpants are a blessing and didn’t get enough screen time.
then on top of that the oversized shirt that drapes in just the right and most comfy way? the bare feet? I would call in sick to work if I saw Daniel wearing this outfit in my house
this is a Daniel who has lost comfy sweater boy’s innocence but who I would still wanna cook food and binge netflix with
this is absolute peak comfy Daniel
a well-deserved 7.8/10
the ‘I can’t believe I wasted so much time with the same suit and coat combo over and over in s1′ Daniel
this Daniel is the sum of everything that is wrong with s1 Daniel and everything that is right about s2 & s3 Daniel
the casual suit jacket. the rolled up sleeves. the loose casual shirt. this is a Daniel who works hard but knows how to have a good time and will 100% seduce you in a foreign city
8.5/10
come to the dark side
the same as the ‘I can’t believe I wasted so much time with the same suit and coat combo over and over in s1′ Daniel but with his classic coat and popped collar for some added mystery to the character
like the ‘I can’t believe I wasted so much time with the same suit and coat combo over and over in s1′ Daniel this man will 100% seduce you in a foreign city but also will not hesitate to use his superior strength to pin you against a wall while he makes out with you
8.59/10
I mean...
I’m not sure you can class underwear as an ‘outfit’ as such, but uh.... sorry, what was I saying? I got a little distracted
I refuse to put a numerical rank on this/10
don’t tell your dad about this one
I know we’ve established that underwear is not really an outfit, but these are pants so I’m gonna say this one counts.
the undone belt? the obvious shirtlessness? hanging with this man will definitely end with someone in jail (and it won’t be him). but at least it’ll be a fun ride on the way down to hell
i refuse to assign numerical value to the semi-naked ones because that’s not fair on the other outfits/10
is he here to fix a car, murder someone or sweep me off my feet? who knows and honestly who cares when he looks like that?
the khaki jacket brings in some ruggedness which tip-top Daniel below is missing while still keeping it effortlessly cool.
this is Daniel. fucking. Miller and he doesn’t care what you think
99.99/10
tip-top Daniel
this is Daniel right at his peak.
everything - the casual bomber from the Adam Price moment earlier, the plaid shirt, the undone buttons, the aviators. the HAIR.
Damn, Daniel. Damn.
100/10

chapter one (the girl in the gutter)
“White on white translucent black capes, back on the rack. Bela Lugosi's dead. The bats have left the bell tower, the victims have been bled. Red velvet lines the black box... Bela Lugosi's dead.” -”Bela Lugosi’s Dead”, Bauhaus
October 12, 1988. Oswego, New York.
“Kill me now,” is what I say as I stare out the window.
The rain is my one true friend now. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to make a good friend on top of this--I’m sure everyone knows about it, the whole thing where if someone, and by someone I mean myself, wasn’t en route to a college or a university, or working a job already, they were kind of left out in the cold. Sure, there have been plenty of acquaintances, but as far as someone I could sit with and feel myself to be true with them, it’s been a while. The whole twisted thing about everything that happened was that it happened so quick. It was four years ago Scott and Frank told me I could hold the microphone in my hand. Four years ago, and last year we may as well have hiked up to the North Pole and stood up a big black flag with the word “NOT!” emblazoned on it, beholding the fact we had conquered the world in the wake of Cliff’s ashes. We rose up like the phoenix, and I was the man on fire.
There is absolutely nothing like standing out in the rain with all of your things taken out from the studio, slung over your shoulder, and your old band mates were the ones throwing you out there into the darkness while the gutters overflow over your head. There isn’t a feeling like it.
And if anyone believes that I had had enough, know for a fact I was asked to leave. I had vowed to rid of the problem, to replace all of the booze with black coffee. I mean, Jesus, I like to have fun with this sort of thing. What’s the point of doing it if I’m not going to have a little fun with it all every now and then? And it’s not like I was drinking a ton so to speak--at least I wasn’t doing those drug loaded pirate raids the four of them would do with Skid Row and Ratt. But I specifically recall telling Scott, verbatim, after he threatened to leave if I did nothing, that I would not have a sip of alcohol as long as I was a member of the band. And yet, for whatever reason, that promise did not suffice or click with any of them.
I think the sound of my phone ringing this morning and waking me up will haunt me for as long as I live. I still hear Jonny’s voice on the other end, telling me it was official. They had made the decision behind closed doors and I had been thrown out on my ass as of that morning, but he never elaborated why.
The next thing I remember was asking him why and the sound of the other end hanging up. No, Jonny, come back. Come back!
Fuck.
I lay there for a minute on my recliner before I even hung up the phone myself. I just reposed with the mouthpiece of the phone pressed to the side of my face, and the cord laying on my neck while I heard the drone of the dial tone right in my ear. They were like my friends, my first friends in a long time following high school, and yet they still showed their dark face to me. Something told me I stood at fault.
It was my fault. It was my fault the band was in turmoil and Frankie and Charlie had that massive blow up that day. It was my fault the new album coasted on the success of Among the Living. It was all my fault.
Once I hung up the phone, I could only crawl back into bed. I only did it for a bit because I refused to mope and wallow in my misery. Even as I took a walk outside, jacket zipped up and hands in my pockets, struggling to hold my head up high even though I sustained a huge punch in the stomach and slap in the face, within time, the lake began weeping with me. There’s a trail that runs along the water’s edge and when I’m in a depressive mood such as this, I take a walk along the soft earth there--I’m half Indian, I feel the cold earth deep within my soul. It’s a part of me. It’s my heart. Since it’s October, and the eve of my twenty-eighth birthday, the lake effect makes its way here, and often when I least expect it.
At one point during my walk, I noticed those feathery plumes emerging from the top of the water. I could feel the cold wind running through my hair and upon the crown of my head. I had to stop in place right next to boulder twice as large as me to better feel the cold. I had faith they were the act for me, such that I felt it in my bones. There’s nothing like this very feeling here.
They say someone is most themselves when they’re alone. Well, if the tears welling up in my eyes due in part to the pain in my chest or the incoming frigid rain should note anything, it’s that I’m alone.
When I came back to my apartment, I crawled inside of my own kitchen and a tiny box of Mike n Ikes for a bit. It’s not enough. A hollow skinny man needs to be filled up again. Maybe when the rain clears up a bit I’ll walk down to the Bitters for a cup and something of substance—a cup of Joey rather. It is a few hours before I turn twenty-eight, after all.
Twenty-eight years old. I joined Anthrax when I was twenty-three. It feels like a thousand years ago.
If there’s anything my mom taught me it’s to not bar grudges, though. No. I’m not like that. I don’t want to be like that. The very thought of such a thing nauseates me and leaves me feeling nothing more than disgusted with myself.
Oh... my mom. The very thought of her eases the pain and warms me up from within. It’s like eating soup on a freezing day: the room may be cold but the belly’s warm and that’s all that matters.
She and my dad are out of town right now, and I have no way of telling them I was fired because I don’t know if they left their hotel and are on the road at the moment, or not.
Twenty-eight years old and I’m spending it by myself. I live alone. I’m sitting here on my window sill looking out to the courtyard down below and watching the rain streak down the window pane. I feel the earth in my soul and she’s crying for me.
I don’t think this rain will let up any time soon and this candy is doing nothing. It’s not soup. And so I get up and head into my room for a change of the clothes and a warmer jacket: yeah, I should probably get out of this pajama shirt.
I’m taking my clothes off and out of the corner of my eye, I see my reflection in the mirror on my closet door. I’m standing there in the middle of my room in my underwear and holding a pair of jeans by the waistband, and I so happen to see this scrawny young guy staring back at me.
Not even a few hours after my release and I can see I’m wasting away, turning into nothing more than a skinny little sack of bones. My stomach is so slim, it’s like the top of a table. No, it’s like a broken, caved in surface of a table. I touch my skin, which is like touching a soft thin layer of cotton piled up on hard plywood. I need to eat something. No drinks, though: I’m not that cowardly.
I put my pants on and, once I’m zipped up, I run my fingers over my waist again. So thin.
Funny, it wasn’t more than a couple of years ago when we were in that warehouse filming the video for “Madhouse,” and I could look at my own face in the mirror across from me and feel like I had a lot going for me. I had a baby face, all round and sweet with these brown eyes and all of this black hair piled about my head, all of it as tightly coiled and coarse as the mane of a horse, and some of it springing up over the crown of my head. Now, I look like I aged about twenty years in no more than thirteen months. One of the many problems of being indigenous: I’m still just a young buck but I look like a senior with my skin sinking in and forming these odd lines. The fact I’m as skinny as I am adds to it.
I don’t feel like putting a shirt on. I changed out of my shirt for no shirt, how ‘bout that! So I put on my sweater over my body instead followed by my leather jacket. I’ve got this down.
I leave the apartment with the keys in my pocket and the hood pulled over my head, the sweater under my black leather, and my hands in the upholstered pockets. Even though there are clouds blanketing the sky overhead, I can tell the sun is setting and the light is fading. It’s a bit of a walk down to the Bitters but I’m hungry enough—I can walk there in time to get some food in my stomach and then boogie back with the last bus ride back to the complex.
Until then, I’m the man in black on this chilly evening, the tall wiry shadow making serious headway two and a half miles down the road. I have my head bowed to keep the rain out of my eyes. Maybe if I got the hell out of this town and wormed my way into the city like the little parasite that I am, Scott and the boys will take me back. I was the strange one after all: Scott and Danny had wives, Charlie and Frankie had girlfriends, whereas I went home alone. They were the essence of the city, I stood there pulling corn kernels out of my teeth. But on the other hand, out here in the sticks, I have no doubt this is home. It may not seem like much and there is a lot of bullshit to go about especially if it’s not living up near the colleges where my complex is, but for me, it’s home. I was born here, my parents live here, and my grandparents are buried in the cemetery.
I reach the corner and I feel the candy having not done enough for me. I can’t make it to the Bitters like this with my own stomach eating away at me.
I stop in place to catch my breath. I can’t do it. I need to get on the bus.
I glance to my right at the sight of the bus stop itself on the sidewalk up ahead and I take that opportunity; once I reach that glass case, I have both hands resting on my belly, I am absolutely starving.
It takes my boarding the bus and taking the seat next to a woman with long dark hair and wrapped in a raincoat when I realize this thing is taking me all the way out to the golf course and the country club. Oh God.
My stomach is killing me, and it only gets worse with the woman next to me stepping off before the interchange onto the highway. I have my back against the wall and my hands all the way into pockets, and my fingers up against my belly. The one thing separating me from my own skin is a small piece of flannel. I’m losing it, that is if I haven’t already lost it.
I’m watching the lights from the wharf illuminate the clouds overhead with the color of an orange creamsicle. The hunger and the candy having done enough is killing me. The country club is this way, and I think there’s also a bar nearby. Not that I want a drink but it’s one thing to bear in mind. Once we lumber closer to those low lights springing out of the darkness, I ring the bell over my head.
Even with the lights glowing out from the wharf, I can see the lake effect further taking place right now, which means I need to get a move on to shelter. This rain is already ridiculous and my pants are getting wet. I have my head bowed to keep the rain out of my eyes, but even that’s not enough. I’ve got an ache in my belly and I’m cold, but I’m not too far.
I feel a chill run up my spine and then bring my arms closer to my body. That bar is here somewhere, but where? The chill is growing worse and no matter what I do, I continue to feel cold. Where the hell is it?
I stop when I notice the figure in black, full in the middle and taking the shape of an hourglass, and with nothing more than a wispy cloud over its head. My skin is practically crawling at this point from the rain, which I feel will turn into snow at any given moment, and it’s only made colder by the sight of her, the sight of Death. She points a skeleton hand at me, stopping me dead in my tracks.
“Are you dead?” she asks in a voice that sounds like it’s about a mile away on the shores of Lake Ontario.
“N-No,” I stammer out, although I feel like I could be dead given my friends shut me out, my stomach is in agony, and the impending snow might freeze me above anything else.
“You must be on your way,” she retorts.
“I swear to you—my hand on my grandfather’s ashes—that I am not dead.”
“What’s your name, then?”
“Joseph Anthony Bellardini.” My voice is strong despite the incessant shivering. “But call me Joey Belladonna.”
I watch her fade out into the shadows and the cluster of spruces, bones and everything, like she never existed. I stand there, my hands crammed into my pockets and my teeth chattering like crazy. Was that Death? And if it was, does that mean I can go where it’s warm? And I still haven’t found the entrance to the country club, much less the bar.
A noise catches my ear. It’s dark except for the glow of the harbor lights and the stupid power plant over in the hills; but I look about the street until I spot the faint silhouette of a woman sprawled over the edge of the sidewalk. I look around and I can see I'm the only other person to be seen here.
I tug on the edge of the hood and run up the wet concrete. The snow is upon us, and running up the sidewalk in Chucks is dangerous, but I know for a fact there’s no one else around. I can see her face and once she comes within my line of sight, I can see the rope tied about her ankles. Once I reach her, I take a look into her rounded pale face and her black hair. She looks familiar...
It takes me a minute to see it’s the woman next to me on the bus. How’d she get here? I set one knee down next to her on the wet sidewalk, which soaks my jeans even more, but that’s the least of my problems right now.
“Hey! Hey, are you okay?” I ask her in a gentle voice. I reach for her face to look right at her.
“Are you okay?” I repeat. In the dim light, I see her part her lips but she never opens her eyes for me.
“He—Help—”
“It’s alright—it’s alright.”
“Help me—″ she sputters. I hear her groan in her throat and I knew something had happened that had to do with Death back there. The rain is relentless and my body is aching from cold and hunger but I know the club and the bar are not too far from here. I put my arms around her: she’s heavy! And the rope around her ankles only makes it harder for me. But I lean her head and shoulders against my chest, and once I stand to my feet, I clasp her to my chest with my right hand and brush her wet hair from her eyes to examine her face with my left. Even in the darkness, I can tell she’s gorgeous.
I glance around the block until I spot something on the other side of the street, like tucked behind something else. That’s either the bar or something else.
“Come on—come with me,” I coax her gently as I scoop her off of the sidewalk: my aching belly pains me even more, but I need to help this poor lady. “It’s okay—I’ve got you.” I adjust myself so that I can carry her without my back hurting on top of everything else.
“I'll take you where it’s warm,” I promise to her over the roar of the rain.
“Please—” her voice slips out from her lips like a piece of wind; “don’t hurt—me—”
“I won’t. I won’t, I promise.” I hold her close to me as I guide her down the sidewalk: it’s tricky because of the rope but I don’t think I have my pocket knife with me.
God dammit.
I reach the corner and I stop to move the hair from her face again. The light is a little better and as a result, I make out a narrow dark crease the length of my pinkie finger on her forehead. Whoever left her there must have left her there to die, hence my encounter with Death.
“What’s your name?” I ask her as the rain patters even harder around us. Even though I have her head against my chest, I smooth her hair back from her face even more. I just have the glow from the lights of the club nearby as my guide, but I can look right into her face. “What’s your name?”
“Maya,” she almost breathes it, her lips parted not even by a hair.
“Maya?” I repeat it because everything is so loud.
“Yes--” She’s fading fast. I slide my other arm under her thighs to better carry her. The dead weight of her body pulls me down like an anchor. I’ll starve to death before I let this woman die out here in the cold and wet.
“Okay, Maya. I’m Joey. Let’s go where it’s warm.” And without another word, I run across the grass to that little building tucked out of sight. I hope it’s the bar and not something else.

DuckTales-The Shadow War Recap
As the Duck family struggles with their falling out, Magica makes her move. Spoilers below.
This was a blast. Quite a duck blur. Webby and Launchpad are helping the triplets move back into the houseboat. Dewey gets rid of his druid golf trophy, Huey burns his Mt. Neverrest shirt, while Louie pretends to throw away his golden Khopesh, but Dewey throws it away for real. Seeing the boys so dejected, Donald decides to move to Cape Suzette. Webby and Launchpad decide to throw a “going away” party for the ducks and secretly invite Scrooge.
Meanwhile, Magica goes to make her move, but is horrified is discovered that the kids had moved out as they were her in. Lena is still in there somewhere as she an literal vomit out Magica, which looks simultaneously creepy and gross. But it doesn’t last. Magica talks Scrooge into letting her in. Magica finds Scrooge in a stained tank top and the house filled with pizzas. Magica is not happy to find her greatest enemy is such a state. Her attempts at drugging him go poorly as Scrooge is of no mind to drink. In a rage, Magica encourages him to get over it and move on. Oddly enough, it works. Scrooge made his fortune on his own and he can adventure on his own.
Scrooge tosses his stuff, but when Lena tells him to discard his number one dime, Scrooge grows suspicious. So, it’s plan C. Just physically take it. Catching Scrooge off guard, she expeldes herself from Lena. Scrooge is initially mad at Lena, but she tells him her story. Scrooge remarks that family is nothing but trouble. Lena tells Scrooge how amazing Scrooge’s family really is, and she wishes she was a part of it. Scrooge offers her a part in it when they defeat Magica. But Magica just traps Scrooge in the dime, while Lena is sucked into her shadow.
Meanwhile, Webby and Launchpad decide to involve Beakley as weaponizing guilt is her speciality as both a spy and a grandmother. She serves them sea-salt ice cream, nice kingdom hearts nod, and guilt’s the family into forgiving Scrooge. Much better than Launchpad’s drinks. They’re melted popsicle. At this point Magica breaks out of the mansion summoning a powerful shadow army.
Every shadow in Duckburg comes to life and attacks the town. Cool henchgirl from first episode cameo. Fenton goes to get the Gizmoduck suit but his shadow steals it. Gyro, Manny, and lil’ bulb pops up at the house boat. Donald tries to rally them but to no avail. The triplets saying they can’t understand Donald gives me life. So, Gyro gives him a mechanical voice box that makes him sound like Don Cheadle.
Magica makes her base at Scrooge’s money vault. Donald rally’s them into an attack. Launchpad flies toward the shadow of the mass of shadows in the air. He tries to crash into them but they catch him. Donald and Beakley ride the boat out to the bin. Beakley is wondering if Donald is always saying badass things. Gyro and his his crew lead an attack on the entrance. They are joined by Fenton.
The kids are told to stay out of Magica’s way, so naturally they go to find Lena so they can all get in Magica’s way. They find Lena’s… let’s call it a living space. Webby finds her poetry book. Lena wrote a poem about her origins. Turns out she’s not Magica’s niece, but a shadow creature she made as Scrooge was trapping her into his dime. Webby does not take it well. They decide to go to the money bin.
Donald and Beakley are forced split up. Donald reaches the money bin while Beakley loses the boat. Donald and the kids met up but the shadow army forces Donald to stay behind. The kids battle Magica.
They actually hold their own. Webby’s friendship bracelet summons magic that defends her from Magica’s blast, proving to Webby that her friendship was real. Lena busts out of Magica’s shadow to save Webby. Magica destroys Lena. During the battle Dewey gets the dime and tricks Magica into blasting it, releasing Scrooge, who mockingly thanks Magica for helping him get his family back. Her staff is broken over Donald’s head. Without her staff, Magica loses her magic and her green hue. I’m guessing next season, they are going to due the more classical powerless, goofy magica, but I will miss serious Magica.
Meanhwile, Lena becomes Webby’s shadow.
As the Ducks celebrate their victory, a crashed space station on the moon picks up the news channel. Della Duck watches her boys. So the moon? I was expecting something like lost in parallel dimensions or time travel but the moon? It just seems so close. You can get a good look at it with a decent telescope. But at least we got the moon theme out of it.
I give it 3 ½ out of 4.

Squeezing more out of taps: How Cape Town cut consumption in half
Ryan Lenora Brown, CS Monitor, April 30, 2018
CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA --Each morning, on opposite sides of this city, two women wake up thinking about water.
For both Helen Moffett and Musa Baba, entire days are choreographed around the vital resource: Where they will get it. How long the line will be. If it will be safe. How little they can manage with and still get by.
Each morning Ms. Baba, a barista, picks her way down a sandy hillside crowded with tin shacks to the communal tap she shares with about 100 of her neighbors. When it’s her turn, she fills a seven-gallon bucket, hoists it onto the top of her head, and carefully walks home, trying not to let too much slosh out into the powdery dust below. That water, after all, has a long day ahead of it. She’ll use it first to wash herself and her kids, then chuck the same water back into a bucket to scrub her floors. Finally, she’ll squeeze out the dregs from the mop, saving them to flush the toilet.
Twenty miles away, Ms. Moffett spends hours each day assembling and maintaining what she calls her “water buffet.” There’s the yellowish water she collects from a spring trickling out beneath a local construction site, jugs of well water she’s bummed from a neighbor, and the trash cans full of rainwater she keeps stashed in her backyard. Bottles and buckets stand at attention around her house, the liquid inside such a wide variety of colors that a friend once quipped that Moffett, a writer, should call her next book “50 Shades of Grey Water.”
A year ago, Baba and Moffett had almost nothing in common, and in many ways, they still live in two different universes. Moffett lives in a manicured gated community flanked by mountains. Baba’s house is two tin rooms she built herself that grip the side of a hill cluttered with other small shacks.
But these days, the two women, along with millions of others here, share a common preoccupation: how to save water. For Baba and many others, that’s been a lifelong project of necessity. But for another population of Cape Town residents, including Moffett, it’s part of a massive lifestyle pivot that has helped bring the city on the southwestern tip of South Africa back from the brink of the unthinkable.
As recently as March, Cape Town’s government was instructing residents to prepare for an imminent “Day Zero,” when taps across most of the city would be shut off indefinitely.
Following three of the driest years in the city’s recorded history, the growing water crisis earned Cape Town a dubious distinction: South Africa’s tourist hub, newspaper headlines across the world blared, was about to become the first developed city in the world to completely run out of water.
But behind the scenes, a tectonic shift was under way. As the city bartered for water with local farmers and hustled to build desalination plants, its residents simply started using less water. A lot less.
And it has worked--at least for now. In March, the city government announced that if current water use patterns held and winter rains fell normally (still a big if), there would be no Day Zero this year.
That’s because since 2016, using a combination of sticks and carrots to coax residents on board, the city has cut its water use by half. Its biggest customers now use 80 percent less. Today, every Capetonian is allowed just 13 gallons of municipal water per day--a little less than the amount it takes to flush a toilet four times. Use more, and the city reduces your pressure to a trickle, and your water bill can turn into a mortgage payment.
By comparison, during its infamous Millennium Drought of 1997 to 2009, Melbourne, Australia, also cut its water consumption by half, but it took 12 years, and at the end of it, residents were still guzzling 17 gallons a day. And between 2012 and 2016, parched California brought its home water use down 25 percent, to about 100 gallons per person per day.
Here in Cape Town, suburban residents have become connoisseurs of taking 90-second showers and then flushing their toilets with the water they collected while doing it. On popular water-saving Facebook groups, city residents debate the best way to wash their dog “off the grid” (bottled water, one woman suggests. Scrub him down with used bath water, offers another.) They swap the names of local companies that will sink a personal well in your backyard. Local police, meanwhile, receive a steady stream of tips from concerned residents who’ve seen their neighbors committing the ultimate middle-class drought crime: watering their lawns.
“There has become a real sense of urgency, even competition [among Capetonians] to see how low you can go [in using water],” says Kirsty Carden, an engineer at the University of Cape Town’s Urban Water Management Research Unit. “Yes, it’s been a crisis, but it’s also good to learn these lessons now. Cape Town isn’t the only city in the world that’s going to need them for the future.”
In South Africa--by some measures the most unequal country on earth--water restrictions have had another, less obvious effect: They have given the rich a small but rare experience of how the poor have always gotten by.
“It’s humbling, learning to think about water the way most South Africans have been doing for a long time,” Moffett says, arranging two gallon jugs of water from another local spring in the trunk of her car. “Every household chore takes three times as much thought, and three times as long.”
Plus, she says, “I can’t believe I’ve spent my life peeing into clean drinking water. What a waste.”
“We have always lived like this--nothing has changed because of the drought,” says Baba, sloshing a T-shirt in a sudsy bucket outside her house. “If now rich people can understand better what that’s like, I think that’s a good thing.”
Many of the city’s wealthiest residents have quietly begun to opt out of the city’s water system altogether. As restrictions on municipal supplies have tightened over the past several months, tens of thousands of people have gone essentially off-grid, drilling backyard wells to supply their showers and trucking in treated factory wastewater to fill their swimming pools. One luxury hotel chain recently announced it was constructing its own desalination plant.
“In the immediate future, people tapping into those alternate supplies relieves pressure on the system, so there’s great benefit for us,” says Xanthea Limberg, the Cape Town city councilor in charge of water. But in the long term, she worries, all the extra wells could drain the city’s vital aquifer, which also needs to recharge after periods of drought. Not to mention that the wealthy going off-grid could deprive the city of income it desperately needs to subsidize water access for the poor.
That divide between those with alternative sources of water and those without them is already beginning to play out in varied ways across the city.
On a recent morning, a convoy of six dirt-streaked police cars screeches to a halt in front of a public beach. Cyclists in spandex, floppy-haired teenagers on skateboards, and elderly women with fluffy white dogs turn to watch as cops pour out and march to the site of the crime--a public bathroom.
“This is where they’ve been filling up the buckets,” one of the policemen says, pointing to a still-dripping tap.
A group of homeless men here, they explain, were using municipal water to wash visitors’ cars--a violation of city water restrictions. But the culprits have made themselves scarce--and, anyway, the cops know they were unlikely to pay any fine they were issued. So they toss the contraband buckets in the back of a police van and pull away.
“These guys aren’t the city’s worst offenders by far,” explains Inspector Shane Blake. But the big malefactors have more resources to hide what they are doing. “There’s a lot of illegal water use happening, but we can’t catch them all.” So Blake and his team are largely limited to spooking the small transgressors.
“People have to get water somewhere. This guy isn’t the criminal,” one onlooker mumbles at the next stop, a shack settlement, as police hand out a $15 ticket to a man scrubbing down a taxi with water from a communal tap. “This guy is just trying to make a living.”
Across town, water trucks rumble into Cape Town’s tree-lined suburbs, carrying a precious cargo--recycled wastewater from local factories and vineyards. For a few hundred dollars, residents can pay to have their pools filled with the treated discharges, which are clean enough to swim in.
“Otherwise, this water just goes straight into the ocean,” says one owner of a water delivery company. (He asks not to be identified because past media attention has incited massive public anger against his company. Many Capetonians suspect that most private water suppliers are illegally sourcing their water from boreholes, which are allowed only for personal use.)
“Look, if you have the money, you can always buy your way--at least to some extent--out of crises, and this drought is no exception,” he says. “You can ask if that’s fair or not, but it’s not illegal.”
But Nazeer Sonday doesn’t see it that way. A farmer and activist in Philippi, a township of Cape Town, he says this crisis is about more than shifting water use off the grid.
“For me, water is a big social justice issue,” he says. “A golf course consumes 2 million liters a day, and how many liters are people wasting watering English gardens in Africa? How many liters are filling private swimming pools? Hello! Water is our shared resource, and those people are taking more than their share.”
For him, solving Cape Town’s water woes requires a different approach than just forcing people to use less water from the city system. As climate change and the extreme weather it brings close in, people need to learn to see water as finite.
“The city sees this as a supply and demand issue--as in, we have the demand, so let’s find the supply,” he says. “But we can’t go on like that forever. At some point, we have to learn how to conserve, too.”

For example, you can find open-sea beaches, white sand beaches, state parks adjacent to beaches, shipwreck diving sites, to name just a few.
The islands are famous for sailing, boating, surfing, windsurfing, onshore and offshore fishing, jet skiing, jet boating, etc. Not only these, but you can also go for hang gliding in the Jockey’s Ridge State Park. For example, you can go camping and drive on many of the beach spots like Freeman Park. The Carolina Beach State Park offers great fishing spots. You can go mini-golfing, go hiking in the many beautiful trails in the preserve, go for an aerial obstacle course in First Flight Adventure Park, enjoy the museum for Wright Brothers, etc. As a mainly pleasure and tourism city, Nags Head offers many beach houses, hotels, and beach condos for your vacation stay. Some of these beach hotels are also pet-friendly.

This is another tourism-oriented city on a North Carolina shoreline. Not only that, but it is also a port city. Wilmington is known as the gateway to many Cape Fear coastal beaches. Some of the beaches here have strong surf. That can awesome to watch and surf in! The numerous beaches and boardwalks here offer tons of beach activities for the whole family.
Furthermore, the city itself contains a lot of tourist attractions. It is a historic city, with many antebellum buildings dotted throughout. The famous Riverwalk is lined with galleries, restaurants, and shops. The battleship USS North Carolina is moored at the port where it serves as a naval combat museum. In addition, many fearsome marine creatures beckon at the Aquarium at Fort Fisher. Couples must go for a romantic walk among the beautiful azaleas in the Airlie Gardens.
Emerald Isle
With particularly scenic beaches, Emerald Isle is a part of North Carolina’s Crystal Coast. The famous Bough Innet Pier here is great for fishing and outdoor activities as well. The Emerald Island Woods has plenty of golfing and sailing opportunities. You can enjoy multiple trails and campsites here as well. The EmeraldFest is an unmissable outdoor reggae and country music concert string in June.
The Emerald Isle has 12 miles of spectacular coastline. Accordingly, you have a good chance to find a secluded spot on the beach. There is only one resort here – the Islander. However, many private hotels and beachfront condos are available along the coast. Pet-friendly and mostly drivable, the beaches offer unspoiled white sand. And if you are lucky, you might even spot a dolphin or two!
FAQs about North Carolina Beaches
When is the best time to visit the beaches in North Carolina?
April to August is the warmest here. Also, some of the attractions are open between March to November only. Which means, this will attract the most tourists as well. However, if you don’t mind a bit of cold and need cheap options, winter is not bad here as well.
Can I stay on the beaches in North Carolina?
There are plenty of beach hotels and resorts available in the region. The beach cities and towns host tourists in numerous beachfront houses and condos. Many of which are pet-friendly as well. Some of them offer parking, boat rentals, and other options as well.
Can I drive on the North Carolina Beaches?
Unless specifically prohibited, you can drive on most beaches on the beaches here. You should only use 4×4 offroading vehicles, though. Keep in mind that there are rules about this even though you are not on the road. For example, you cannot drive on or between the dunes. Also, driving or parking on vegetation is strictly prohibited. On most beaches, the speed limit is 15 miles per hour unless you got a special permit. Offroading vehicles are also subjected to standard North Carolina driving laws. These include alcohol rules as well.
Vehicle Parking
About parking your vehicle, there are some rules as well. Most beach towns and cities offer paid parking spots. These can be free at night. You can park your vehicle for up to 24 hours only. Many of the less-crowded beaches have free parking. Further, most of the beaches deep in nature have no parking restrictions.
Can I take my dog to the beaches in North Carolina?
Dogs love beaches! The sand, the water, – and those horrible nose-pinching crabs! Most beaches in North Carolina are pet-friendly. However, some places only allow them at certain times. For example, the Carolina Beach town enforces pet visits on the beach only during October through March. Also, most places allow pets only during daylight hours. Many boardwalks do not allow dogs as well.
Pet rules on NC beaches
Furthermore, keep in mind that your pet wastes must be collected by you. If you are planning to take your dog to the beaches, be sure to keep plastic or paper containers used to clean up doggie wastes. You can be fined for not having your dog on a leash, or leaving the poor guy in a vehicle. The length of the leash matters too. On the most crowded vacation days, the leash must bot be more than 6 feet, while in lighter crowds you can use double that. If your dog is very well-trained you can then get a permit to unleash him on some beaches, Even then, you must remain within 30 feet of your four-legged friend.
Are there tour packages for North Carolina beaches?
Sure there are! There are many tours, trips, and adventures available on and around the beaches in NC. According to TripAdvisor, here are the top 10 tours in North Carolina beaches:

Will my kids love the North Carolina Beaches?
No doubt kids will love the NC beaches. In good weather, children always love the water and shores. The beach itself offers tons of children and family activities. For example, you can build a sandcastle with your little loved ones (be sure to pack figurines!). You can play some beach sports, bring a boogie board, play tic-tac-toe on the sand – the only limit is your imagination (and safety, of course). If nothing else, just running through the water can be a lot of fun!
Teens and pre-teens will love activities like learning to surf or to fish. The aquariums here offer tons of learning and marine life watching opportunities. The boardwalks have lots of fun amusement rides and ice cream shops for your child to relish. Older kids will thank you if you take them in adventurous activities like scuba diving, offroading, or jet boating.
Furthermore, for kids who love nature, many trails and campgrounds in the many national parks around here will be a delight. Besides, if you can handle a kayak, taking your kid on one will always ensure great bonding and fun times. The beach cities often have many quaint, historic shops that little girls will just love. The war museums will instill awe in many kids and adults alike, as well.
Children safety in beaches
Please make sure you keep it safe with kids at the beach, though. Always check with local swimming advisor if the water id okay for kids to swim in. Do not go in the water 3 days after a heavy weather event. In hot weather, avoid sunburn with shirts and sunscreens. Stay hydrated as well. And don’t use floating toys in the ocean – they are only good at pools or other calm waters. Above all – of course – never leave your children alone on the beach.

17 JULY 2019- GOLF AT ROYAL DURBAN
With Johan working oversea’s and Rob away in Cape Town I had no golf partners so I decided to play by myself with dad walking around for some exercise.
I made the mistake of playing 2 balls and I have to admit by the 15th hole I ran out of steam and got extremely tired.
I met Andy Baird in the afternoon to help him out with designing his fishing shirts for their upcoming trip to Join Dam. I am not sure what I have got myself into this and if I can do it but I will try best.

15 TO WATCH/5 SPORTS TECH/POWER OF SPORTS 5: RICK HORROW’S TOP SPORTS/BIZ/TECH/PHILANTHROPY ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 10
with Jacob Aere
After years of buildup, opening weekend for the XFL did not disappoint. Four games in D.C., Houston, Dallas and New York aired across ABC, FOX, and ESPN. USA Today noted that it was "up to the product on the field now to convince football fans across the country that another football league is worth investing time into," and after the league’s inaugural game at Audi Field in Washington, DC, it appeared XFL Founder Vince McMahon and Commissioner Oliver Luck "achieved that goal." When the league launched, McMahon was "adamant that the XFL would provide a better entertainment experience by having shorter games." However, the first one "managed to eclipse the three-hour mark.” The XFL also hired Ross Greenburg, the creative mind behind “Hard Knocks,” to produce a 10-minute behind-the-scenes documentary on the run-up to the league’s Saturday launch. In Dallas, close to 20,000 fans braved the rain to see the new Dallas Renegades – with a fair number of fans traveling from Oklahoma to cheer on former OU quarterback Landry Jones and Coach Bob Stoops.
Just in time for the Daytona 500, NASCAR announced Penn National Gaming as its first authorized sports betting provider. The three-year, non-exclusive deal gives Penn National the rights to use NASCAR marks at its retail sportsbooks and on the sports betting app it intends to launch in August. The sportsbook app will use NASCAR's official data feed to offer in-race betting. Penn National also will announce an extension of its title sponsorship of the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway, where it operates a full-service casino. The most visible aspect of the deal initially will be a free-to-play NASCAR Finish Line prediction contest offered through an app developed by Penn National and Boom Sports, creator of the popular NBC Sports Predictor app. Launching for the season-opening Daytona 500 and available nationwide, the contest will offer a weekly $50,000 prize. The strategic play for both sides is long term, as NASCAR works to increase its share of the U.S. sports betting market dominated by team sports.
Busch Beer gives away Ford Mustangs as part of its Daytona 500 promotions. According to SportsBusiness Daily, Busch Beer will run a unique Daytona 500 sweepstakes called #Pit4Busch, where the only way to enter will be to send a note to Busch's official Twitter account while Kevin Harvick is making a pit stop in the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford. Busch is one of NASCAR’s four new premier partners, as well as the No. 4 car’s anchor sponsor. As part of the promotion, Busch’s Twitter account will send out tweets every time Harvick stops on pit road, and fans who reply in the roughly 10 seconds before he exits his pit will be entered to win a Ford Mustang. Busch is working with Ford to give out a Mustang for every stop, which means it could approach half a dozen cars. Meanwhile, A-B will promote its rosé-wine-in-a-can brand, Babe, at the Daytona 500, a taste of how it will use its NASCAR premier partnership to appeal to a wider lane of consumers.
Major League Soccer will enjoy labor peace at least for the next five years, as MLS and the MLS Players Association struck an agreement in principle for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement that will begin with the upcoming season. "As we prepare to celebrate our 25th season, we are very pleased to finalize a new five-year Collective Bargaining Agreement with our players," said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. "This agreement addresses key strategic priorities for the league and our players while also retaining the basic player compensation structure that has been the foundation for the growth and stability of Major League Soccer." The deal is subject to approval by the MLS Board of Governors and the MLSPA. Deal points include increased investment in player spending, greater salary budget flexibility across rosters, players sharing in media revenue, and increase in charter flights as well as expanded free agency. The new CBA is particularly important as MLS adds two new franchises this season – Nashville SC, and Inter Miami CF, bringing the total to 26 clubs.
The NBA All-Star Game gets ready to hit Chicago, with major economic upside for the league and the Windy City. The NBA’s annual all-star break is always a beehive of business activity, from the annual NBA tech summit to NBA Cares activations throughout the host city. The NBA, NBPA, and Nike also have announced that the 2020 NBA All-Star uniforms will pay tribute to the late Kobe Bryant, as well as his daughter Gianna and the seven other people who tragically passed away in last Sunday’s helicopter accident. The 2020 NBA All-Star Game will feature Team LeBron wearing the No. 2 and Team Giannis (Antetokounmpo) wearing the No. 24 – Gianna and Kobe’s basketball jersey numbers, respectively. In addition, both teams will wear jersey patches displaying nine stars, representing those who lost their lives in the crash, including John, Keri, and Alyssa Altobelli, Sarah and Payton Chester, Christina Mauser, and Ara Zobayan. The All-Star Game takes place on February 16 at Chicago’s United Center.
Kobe Bryant was also front and center at Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremonies. Not only was Bryant, who won an Oscar for his animated short “Dear Basketball” in 2018, memorialized in the Academy’s annual tribute to artists and artisans who have passed, nominees and presenters used the occasion to remember him. The first Kobe Bryant tribute of the night came from the acceptance speech for best animated short film, “Hair Love.” “This award is dedicated to Kobe Bryant. May we all have a second act as great as his was," director Matthew A. Cherry said. Meanwhile, filmmaker Spike Lee donned a purple suit embroidered with Bryant's Lakers uniform number, 24. The annual In Memoriam tribute opened with a picture of Bryant beside his quote, "Life is too short to get bogged down and be discouraged. You have to keep moving. You have to keep going. Put one foot in front of the other, smile and just keep on rolling." A public memorial for Bryant and the others who lost their lives is set for February 24 at Staples Center, the site of many of his triumphs.
With February underway, the NBA has tipped off leaguewide celebrations of Black History Month. Celebrations will see all NBA teams don custom Nike Black History Month warmup shirts throughout the month. The Nike Dri-FIT T-shirt features words selected by players that “reflect black history and culture, and our collective commitment to equality and diversity: Activate, Believe, Dream, Empower, Engage, Equality, History, Inspire, Justice, Lead, Listen, Love, Perseverance and Unify.” Another cause strongly backed by the NBA, ESPN’s 13th annual V Week for Cancer Research set a new record, raising more than $8.8 million for the V Foundation for Cancer Research to mark a boost of 6% year-over-year. “We broke the V Week record thanks to the passion of those who work on the various initiatives here at ESPN, as well as support from the Disney TV networks, and the generous response from fans,” said Kevin Martinez, vice president of ESPN Corporate Citizenship. “In particular the new aspects of V Week, including a campaign with Andy Grammer and Stuart Scott Day, connected with viewers and drove awareness and donations.”
On the heels of the Australian Open, The Match in Africa sets a tennis attendance record and raises $3.5 million for charity. A sellout crowd of 51,954 attended a Roger Federer-Rafael Nadal- led exhibition match at Cape Town Stadium on Friday, the "biggest crowd ever on record for a tennis match" according to the Associated Press. Federer won an exhibition match against Nadal in his "first match in his mother's country of birth." Almost everything was for Federer that night, with "caps and T-shirts with RF logos all across the crowd," plus "Welcome home, Roger" signs being held up. The Match in Africa event, featuring Federer, Nadal, Bill Gates, and South African comedian and “Daily Show” host Trevor Noah raised $3.5 million for the Roger Federer Foundation, which "supports early childhood education" in Africa. Federer has long stated that he considers South Africa his “second home.”
2021 could bring major changes to the entire span of the NFL season. The NFL Players Association, according to multiple media reports, is set to meet to conditionally vote on a potential 17-game regular-season schedule that could begin in 2021 as part of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. ESPN reports that all 32 team player representatives, along with the NFLPA executive board, will meet to review a 10-year labor contract for the second time within a week. The NFL is pushing hard for the switch to a 17-game regular season schedule under the next CBA. The adjustment would presumably see the preseason shortened by at least one game, and involve expanding the roster beyond the current 53 players. The change could assist the Jacksonville Jaguars and other franchises to play at a range of different venues without decreasing the number of games in their home market – a major sticking point with owners and front office staff.
Amstel Light and Phil Mickelson are teaming up in a multiyear partnership that will see the launch of a campaign focused on “addressing the challenges in adult male friendships.” Last weekend, Mickelson teamed up with NFL Hall of Fame quarterback and new friend Steve Young at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Though the pair came up a little short in the Pro-Am (and in Mickelson’s quest to win Pebble Beach a record six times), their pairing was a fun preview of the wisdom Mickelson will impart in the Amstel Light ads. Throughout the campaign, Mickelson will provide support and advice to men on and off the golf course seeking to make new friends in his own personal comedic style. Consumers will have opportunities to engage directly with Mickelson, both on social and through on-and off-premise activations. A series of contests will be announced using the hashtag, “#FriendswithPhil” through which consumers will have the opportunity to earn the friendship of the golfer. After little more than a year on Instagram, Mickelson has amassed a respectable 742,000 friends and followers, which bodes well for an Amstel Insta boost.
Twitter has posted better than expected quarterly revenue. It was Twitter's first billion-dollar quarter. The company, which announced earnings last Thursday, also continues to attract new users. According to CNet, in the fourth quarter, the number of monetizable daily active Twitter users -- people who log into the site daily and see ads -- hit 152 million, up nearly 21% from the 126 million in the same period last year. The company's stock rose more than 15% in early trading Thursday to around $38.50 per share. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey pointed to work that the company has done to make the service more appealing to new users, including its efforts to help people find and follow topics they're interested in. Twitter executives also looked ahead to big events this year such as the Summer Olympics and elections around the world, including U.S. presidential elections. For the Olympics, Twitter execs pointed to improvements in how the platform uses live and stored video, saying Twitter will have "near real-time highlights of the most important events."
Last Wednesday was National Signing Day, and its implications will stretch well beyond the 2020 college football season to come. What was once a day filled with frenetic activity is now much quieter due to the "early signing period" scooping up most FBS signees, but it still signifies the end of the college football recruiting cycle. The state of Florida produced 59 blue-chip recruits (i.e. four- or five-stars) in the class of 2020, followed by Texas (54), Georgia (36), and California (30). Combined, the four states were responsible for 49.4% of all 2020 blue-chips. Louisiana (16), Alabama (15), Maryland (15), North Carolina (13), and Tennessee (11) were the only other states to produce more than 10. Elite football prospects spring up all over the country, but they're heavily concentrated in the South and California, plus notable hot spots in Texas near Houston and Dallas. Notably, for the second time in three years, Kirby Smart and the University of Georgia are the recruiting national champions, adding 25 signees from the Class of 2020 and landing 10 of the nation's top 60 players.
Spotify is set to acquire Bill Simmons’ pop-culture and sports site and podcast company The Ringer. The music streaming service confirmed that it has entered a “definitive agreement” to buy the company, although terms of the transactions were not disclosed. Cynopsis Media noted that Spotify is acquiring the company to bolster its audio output. The Ringer operates a slew of successful podcasts including Simmons’ own eponymous shows, which gets A-list guests from the world of sports, TV and movies, The Watch and Binge Mode. The transaction is expected to close by the end of the first quarter 2020. Looking ahead, Spotify predicted that it will net 142 million to 153 million paid subscribers by the end of this year and that its monthly active users will increase to between 328 million and 348 million. Simmons has traveled a long and winding road with The Ringer, and its latest rest stop with Spotify should not only add stability, it should introduce the already wildly popular site to millions of rabid new fans, basketball and otherwise.
The Jacksonville Jaguars will play two “home” games in London during the 2020 season as they hunt for additional revenue. The Jaguars have played in London every year since 2013 as part of a seven-year contract with the NFL, which expires at the end of next season and is expected to be renewed. The team has made significant efforts to position themselves as the lead NFL franchise in the UK market, with owner Shahid Khan even making a £600 million offer to buy London’s Wembley Stadium in 2018. As a small-market team in the U.S., the Jaguars benefit from playing in London by virtue of doubling their single-game revenue in comparison to games at TIAA Bank Field stadium in Jacksonville. The team has struggled to sell out home games for the past 20 years and, with plans for the $700 million “Lot J” entertainment district set to break ground in the off-season, additional revenue streams are a priority. While the addition of another home game for the Jaguars in London would appear to lean towards the franchise permanently relocating to the UK, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell remains noncommittal on the concept.
French soccer champions Paris Saint-Germain has opened an academy in Miami worth a reported $70 million. The new campus, which is the largest overseen by a European club in the United States and will cost students between $35,000 and $81,400 per year to attend, will serve as the headquarters for all of PSG’s academies across North America. The facility, built in partnership with franchise holder Paris Saint Germain Academy USA, will also be the new home of the PSG Academy’s residency program, which can serve more than 100 players per season. A 20,000-capacity stadium and five training pitches also sit within the property. The academy, which aims to welcome more than 10,000 developing players in the next three years, also has links to United Soccer League (USL) League Two club FC Miami City. While no link has been announced to the David Beckham-led Inter Miami franchise, which makes its MLS debut next month, the new PSG academy will add even more international soccer cachet to South Florida and help solidify the soccer fan base.

Bleacher Report’s Super Bowl stay paid off with a new football property called Gridiron. According to Digiday, Bleacher Report became the number one digital sports publisher on NFL Sunday for the Super Bowl, drawing 198 million cross-platform engagements, according to the company. The platform registered 1.3 million cross-platform engagements recorded from the B/R Gridiron social accounts which stands as the most ever in a single day, while the B/R App on Super Bowl Sunday saw app engagements up 186%. In 2019’s third quarter, Bleacher Report launched B/R Gridiron as a vertical for all its professional football coverage. Since then, the B/R Gridiron Instagram account has attracted more than 500,000 followers. Also, since the vertical’s launch, the number of social media interactions on NFL-related posts and coverage on Bleacher Report’s platforms increased by 41%, totaling 198 million during the NFL season, according to Bleacher Report. B/R Gridiron is not the first Bleacher Report vertical to extend its reach into live events, as that happened two years ago with the NBA All-Star game. By tying together live events with unique activities, Bleacher Report has found growth success like no other online sports media platform.
Major League Soccer and U.S. Soccer have selected Stats Perform as a global data partner. According to European Gaming, Stats Perform will leverage its combination of trusted and granular sports data with advanced AI capabilities to create superior fan, spectator, and bettor experiences for men’s and women’s soccer competitions in the U.S. through Stats Perform’s RunningBall, Opta, and Integrity services. The agreement grants Stats Perform the right to exclusively collect, analyze, and distribute official ultrafast data and player data to global broadcast, media, betting, and professional teams for all MLS, U.S. Open Cup, and Men’s and Women’s National Team matches. For the first time, MLS and U.S. Soccer will also offer an official ultrafast data feed optimized for sports betting operators from all MLS and select U.S. National Team and U.S. Open Cup matches. The deal will run through the end of the 2022 season and the partnership will expand to allow the soccer body to also comprehensively evaluate and identify talent and increase the capabilities for U.S. Soccer’s approach to improving their player development operations.
The XFL will also be broadcast in Canada, and DraftKings is now an official partner of the league. TSN will cover all regular-season XFL games north of the American border and during the 2020 play-offs. In the United States, the XFL has agreed to multi-year rights deals with ESPN and FOX Sports. From the inaugural 2020 season, XFL games will air weekly on broadcast television through ABC and FOX Sports complemented by games on cable on ESPN, ESPN2, FS1 and FS2. The inaugural game for the XFL revamp was played on February 8 between the DC Defenders and Seattle Dragons. ABC and ESPN’s broadcast of XFL games will include gambling graphics and commentary and daily fantasy sports operator DraftKings has been named the official daily fantasy sports partner and an authorized gaming operator of the XFL. DraftKings customers will be able to place bets in states where sports betting is legal using DraftKings platforms. With the recent success of Super Bowl betting, the time couldn’t be better for the XFL to kick things off.
MLB will launch a virtual mobile betting game. According to SportsPro, MLB has expanded its partnership with global data provider Sportradar to launch a virtual baseball in-play game for licensed betting operators in the U.S. and overseas. The new simulation title is the first that Sportradar has developed in association with a major North American sports rights holder. The game will feature official MLB team names and logos, as well as live data streams to simulate gameplay. For the visuals, more than 1,300 individual motions were captured using a combination of cutting-edge motion capture technology and software developed specifically to add to the real-life look and feel of the game. The game offers a fast-paced betting variation for mobile and online users, with longer betting cycles for retail. The addition of adding a virtual betting game to MLB will hopefully attract a larger fanbase to keep people interested during ever-longer baseball game durations.
Faze Clan is launching a Quibi reality show to sign its next gaming star. According to The Verge, the Los Angeles-based esports organization has partnered with soon-to-come streaming service Quibi to produce Faze Up, a contest that will see six users of the Quibi app compete to be the next signed Faze member. To participate, contestants will need to subscribe to Quibi when it launches in April. Most professional video game players today are scouted either through the top leaderboards and tournaments of popular gaming titles or are well-known social media personalities with big followings on Twitch and YouTube, but this a concept yet to be seen in esports. Faze Clan is very focused on its image beyond gaming - even rapper Lil Yachty is part of their team - so the move to reality television on a buzzed-about new streaming service like Quibi makes perfect sense for Faze.
Power of Sports Five
A popular MLB agent will climb Mount Kilimanjaro for charity. According to mlb.com, B.B. Abbott has accomplished much representing Hall of Famer Chipper Jones. This week, he will climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Abbott did some altitude training in Colorado, hiked up Peru’s Machu Picchu, and wore boots and an altitude mask while taking some long walks near his Tampa, Florida home. To date, he has raised $100,000 for pediatric cancer research but has raised his goal to $125,000 due to an overwhelming amount of early support. Jet Sports Management (Abbott’s agency) and The Chipper Jones Family Foundation have pledged $25,000 toward the contributions which can be made through The Rally Foundation or the NPCF. Abbott flew to Africa on Sunday and begins his eight-day climb two days later to help raise money for cancer research while bringing in other MLB affiliated groups to contribute to the cause.
The losing team’s merchandise from the Super Bowl is repurposed for charity. According to Yahoo! Sports, the NFL pre-prints championship merchandise with both teams for fan demand being at its highest while the confetti is still falling. That approach leaves the league with half its inventory rendered instantly unsellable. Prior to 1997, the NFL simply destroyed the “losing” merchandise. Since then, the NFL enlists the services of Good360, a charity experienced in redistributing excess corporate inventory to charitable organizations across the globe. Each year, Good360 and the league begin coordinating their distribution plans several weeks ahead of the playoffs. Right now, the NFL is in the process of inventorying all the excess 49er “championship” merchandise at a central, undisclosed location. Meanwhile, Good360 is working its own worldwide network of charities, trying to line up the right locale with the appropriate merchandise. Several years back, the league provided Good360 with a list of approved countries in Africa, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, and from those countries, Good360 targets the appropriate charities with the clothing for people in need.
Jaguars defensive end Calais Campbell won Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year. According to NBC Sports, the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award recognizes an NFL player for outstanding community service activities off the field, as well as excellence on the field. The NFL recognized all 32 Man of the Year nominees before kickoff at Super Bowl LIV, and 2018 award winner Chris Long handed off the award to Campbell. Campbell had also received the Cardinals’ nomination for the award in both 2011 and 2014. He has earned four Pro Bowl spots and this year took home the defensive MVP award in the league’s all-star game. In 2009, Campbell formed the CRC Foundation alongside his mother, Natea, and has engaged in numerous charitable initiatives throughout his 12-year NFL career. The CRC Foundation, which is named for his late father, is committed to the enhancement of the community through the teaching of critical life skills to young people and through his relentless community service. Now, Campbell has received an additional $250,000 for the charity of his choice thanks to his recent Walter Payton award.
Dick’s Foundation invests $5 million in women’s soccer. According to Philanthropy Women, the Dick’s Foundation announced a three-year, $5 million Sports Matter grant to the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s United for Girls initiative aimed at increasing opportunities for girls and young women to benefit from soccer. As the presenting partner of United for Girls, the Dick’s Foundation’s grant will be used to create safe places to play, fund coaching and training opportunities, and support soccer programs in underserved communities across the country with the goal of engaging 100,000 girls by 2023. In addition to the multi-year partnership, Dick’s is the official merchandise vendor for the Stand Beside Her tour, which serves as the exhibition and training tour for the 2020 U.S. Women’s National Team ahead of competition this summer in Tokyo. Since 2014, Dick’s and The Dick’s Foundation have pledged more than $100 million to support youth sports teams and leagues in need and their most recent effort is a needed measure to put a spotlight on women’s soccer.
Four celebrities will trek 100 miles across a frozen lake in Mongolia for mental health charity. According to Charity Today, BBC Radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw, The Saturdays’ Frankie Bridge, TV presenter Judge Rob Rinder, and broadcaster Louise Minchin are now in training for Sport Relief: On Thin Ice. The four-day challenge, taking place later this month, will see participants attempt to cross Lake Khovsgol in North-Western Mongolia, which is one of 17 designated “ancient lakes” in the world and more than one million years old. They will be trekking, skating, and cycling almost a marathon a day across the ice of Lake Khovsgol in freezing temperatures dropping as low as -35 degrees Celsius. All of the action will be filmed for a BBC One documentary that will air the week of Sport Relief, which is back on Friday, March 13. Sport Relief: On Thin Ice will raise money to help improve life-changing mental health services and support many other projects tackling poverty and injustice, both in the UK and around the world. By combining entertainment, physical challenge, and charity, On Thin Ice will be a hit for ratings and for donations.

Former Everton defender Pat Van den Hauwe reveals he held a gun to a man’s head
& # 39; If I had pulled that trigger, I wouldn't be sitting here now & # 39 ;, says Pat Van den Hauwe. & # 39; He wouldn't be around either. & # 39;
& # 39; He & # 39; is the South African acquaintance who has avoided a debt and has ended up paying his life within a split second by a double English First Division champion and a fourfold FA Cup finalist.
To tell the story of the Belgian-born, London Van den Hauwe, a stylish but tenacious Defend the nickname & # 39; Psycho Pat & # 39 ;, you have to start on that sultry evening in Cape Town, to ask the question: how did he ever get so close to committing murder?
Pat Van den Hauwe revives the night that I nearly shot a man in Cape Town, But first to the beach bar in Camps Bay, more than 20 years ago.
But while he once put the blue shirt of Birmingham, Everton and Millwall or the whites of Tottenham in his shorts, now he was wearing a gun, he had become so paranoid amid cocaine indulgence and underworld figures. So what happened?
& # 39; I nearly shot someone & # 39 ;, says the 58-year-old, with his birth. Why?
& # 39; His arrogance, and because he continued to restrain me for the money I had lent him. I was drinking with friends and walked by. I shouted: "When are you going to pay me? It's months ago."
No chance. So I walked over to him and put the gun on his head and said, "Where's my money?"
& # 39; I had a hair puller. It doesn't need much pressure. I also had hollow point bullets. They blow your head away. If I had done that, I would still be in prison.
& # 39; They have split seconds … if some noise had gone off, or if it had gone for me, I would have pulled that trigger. It was a millisecond decision. It was life-changing.
& # 39; The next day I thought, "What kind of fuck did I do there?"
& # 39; Van den Hauwe had won the First & # 39;
& # 39; But what I did not do that evening, it has haunted me since. & # 39; Division and European Cup Winners & Cup with Everton in 1985 and two years later his goal in a 1-0 win over Norwich in May 1987 helped regain the title.
He raised the FA Cup with Spurs in 1991 and played for Wales, a handsome poster boy with a cockney charm.
But during his time on White Hart Lane I met two people who would steer his life naturally – Ossie Ardiles and the Mandy Smith model.
Van den Hauwe first deals with Ardiles, the Argentinian installed the Spurs manager in 1993.
It happened more than 20 years ago when I ended up in South Africa to escape from England
& # 39; I immediately knew something was wrong. He said to me: "You are not in my plans." Why? & # 39; Do you remember that match in Birmingham? & # 39;
Van den Hauwe imitates dropping his jaws. & # 39; I did it in a tackle when I played for Spurs ten years earlier.
& # 39; At the time, there was little conflict between England and Argentina. I stood over him and said a few words. But I was a kid, I didn't know what I was saying.
& # 39; He had remembered it. So that was that, from playing every week to doing nothing. He then blocked me from joining another First Division club.
& # 39; I felt like throwing him through his f ****** counter. I had a few years left at the top.
We return to Smith, the former wife of a Rolling Stone that I met in a wine bar after an introduction by Spurs teammate Paul Walsh
]
They married in 1993 with the photos splashed about Hello! magazine. But the relationship, he said, was dysfunctional and was controlled by Smith's mother, who lived with them. They divorced within two years.
& # 39; If I could do it all again, I would never come close. The biggest mistake I've ever made. It was a different life and I hated it.
& # 39; Like f ****** that! & # 39;
Sportsmail & # 39; s photographer starts to click away Van den Hauwe is animated. I can not stand it! Years ago I would have chased you f ******! & # 39;
Our man lowers his lens.
& # 39; It became too much, I couldn't handle it. Three times we were on the cover of Hello! – It was a joke. Her mother was all about the money.
Some people thrive on celebrities, not me. I even let one of the Krays ask me to visit him in prison! I refused. "
& # 39; Mick is a lovely guy, but if you cross him … he was so fond of, & # 39; Come then, if you want something? & # 39 ;. But I honestly had given up.
& I knew the end was and it was the end too early.I played in the Second Division and live at home with my parents.
& # 39; I called Mick and said: & # 39; I'm ready. & # 39; I was a gentleman and they paid my contract. & # 39;
If that had a sad ending – I moved to South Africa soon afterwards – then the start and the middle were much more fun. He had made his debut in Birmingham City in 1978, where Mick Harford was a teammate. He laughs before he recalls one story.
& # 39; One evening we were on the road with our partners to drive through the city when a car cut us to pieces. It really turned Mick off, and when that happened, he didn't stop him.
& # 39; We have been chasing them for about 20 minutes. Eventually they stopped – three of them. "Ah s ***!"
& # 39; But Mick jumped out, opened his shoe, got this big golf club and broke their engine. They quickly got it. "
If Van den Hauwe had tried to play the peacemaker on that occasion, he would soon be the troublemaker.
& # 39; That came at QPR when I was one of their players on the Howard Kendall (Everton boss) said: "That was the best I've seen you play, but I still rate two weeks' wages"
& # 39; I was furious until I found out went to an end of the season p *** up in Magaluf! & # 39;
I met a girl on the first day, she was beautiful. I haven't seen the boys for the week. She asked me to move to Alaska and work at her ranch.
& # 39; I would give it all up. It was only Howard who stopped me. "
& # 39; I was caught, right? & # 39; I ended up in the hospital with a blood disease. My ankle was swollen and the virus turned out to be pretty serious. That was difficult, missing games. & # 39;
But Van Den Hauwe did not miss the big one, such as Everton & # 39; s 3-1 win over Rapid Vienna in the cup winner's final or the semi-final win over Bayern
He was three times losing to Everton in the FA Cup final but won the medal of his winner with Spurs against Nottingham Forest, the last notorious for Paul Gascoigne & # 39; s injury
& # 39 I am often asked if the senior pro & # 39; s could have calmed him down. No chance. I turned around before we left the tunnel. & # 39;
& # 39; But we wanted it winning for him after he left. I loved Gazza, the best I played with. "
I have no idea! There was no Welsh blood.
We meet at the Blue Base, in an Everton
It was for Liverpool that Van den Hauwe returned from South Africa three years ago. community center where he works, spends time with dementia sufferers. He is also a hostess at Goodison Park.
I am happy, I feel alive, he says.
That last comment, we learn, is a reference to how low he felt before the end of his time in South Africa.
I was just divorced (for the third time). One day you are awake and you are dead the next day.
& # 39; I spent 20 years there and had to sell all my medals, work a lifetime. I would have been caught and lost money. I was drained.
& # 39; The thought of starting all over again was too much. But then you think: & # 39; I have something to give & # 39 ;.
& # 39; It was not easy. When I returned, I didn't think anyone would remember me. I was stiff again when I spoke for the fans.
& # 39; Now my confidence returns. I have a lot to be thankful for, I just had to realize that. & # 39;

A Day at the National Folk Festival
Most of you know of our love of and pride in The Richmond Folk Festival. And most of you know that through the leadership of Venture Richmond, the RFF was born out of the National Folk Festival. Cities host the national festival for three years. This year was the first year for Salisbury, MD as host city. We attended the NFF on Saturday — not volunteering, but free to actually sit in the audience and take in full 45-minute performances. If you attend Richmond’s Folk Festival, lots of things are going to look and sound very similar! And just as we have learned in Richmond, the Festival goes on, rain or shine!
We spent Friday night in Cape Charles so still had a two hour drive north to Salisbury plus a stop for breakfast at the Exmore Diner.
We started out driving in sunshine but the closer we got to Salisbury, the cloudier it got, proving the forecast accurate. We got lucky and got to check in to our hotel early and then headed to downtown Salisbury around 11am.
Even though there was a free shuttle bus from a satellite parking lot, we had studied the map showing all of the free parking available in town so we thought as early as it was, we could probably find a space. And find we did, just one block from the dance stage!
We knew that Dave Jones, who is in charge of set-up and tear-down in Richmond, had the same task in Salisbury and that several food vendors from RVA were also in Maryland. Additionally, Jim Bland of Plan9 was also in charge of the merchandise booths. But the strangest bit of quasi deja vu was that all the signage and the pocket guide was designed by House of Hayes LLC in Richmond. We almost felt like we were in Richmond!
Performances began at noon but since the Marketplace opened earlier, we headed there first. Janet ended up being interviewed by a local TV reporter for their evening news story on day two of the festival. We stopped by “the merch tent” and talked to Jim and bought a poster and a National Folk Festival scarf for Janet.
Next we headed to the City Stage for a performance by tapper Jason Samuels Smith. We remembered from the first year of the Richmond Folk Festival when he performed alongside Chitresh Das from India; their respect for each other’s contrasting styles still stands out in my mind and epitomizes the folk festival. Even though all performance stages are covered, not so for the audience. It started raining as we claimed seats on the front row and it absolutely pitched it down the entire time Jason danced. Of course we still enjoyed it but on behalf of Salisbury, we felt terrible.
We decided to head back to the car (because we could!) and re-evaluate what we needed to carry with us. Luckily, the rain subsided and only a few times for the rest of the day and evening did we get any more rain; only once did we have to re-don those handy-dandy plastic ponchos.
We zig-zagged all over the Festival site until about 10pm, just doing what we wanted to do. Besides the advantages of our parking site, it was certainly different being right in the heart of downtown with shops and restaurants open. Sure, I am sure the food and drink vendors business suffered but that might have had as much to do with the weather than anything. I have no idea what downtown Salisbury is like on a normal Saturday but perhaps people who don’t normally go downtown learned that the shops and restaurants are worth supporting so that everyone wins.
We walked through the Children’s Area.
We talked to the new Superintendent of the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historic Park and invited her to come to Richmond and experience the Richmond Folk Festival and meet her NPS peeps at Tredegar and at the Maggie Walker National Historic Site.
We listened to Cajun music by Steve Riley & The Mamou Playboys on the stage equivalent to Richmond’s stage on the Brown’s Island Way hillside.
We listened to Texas fiddling and Western swing by those cute Quebe Sisters on a just-this-month opened amphitheater stage along the Wicomico River.
We stopped by “OPS,” the center of the festival operations, looking for Dave Jones. We never did run in to him but we did talk to several festival staff members that we know from the many years they have come to Richmond.
We visited the booths in the Folk Life area.
We then walked all the way back to the dance stage food court because several folks had recommended a crab cake vendor there. Janet happened to notice a golf cart that was labeled “Water & Soda” and realized the Team Leader must be around. Sure enough, she was checking in with her volunteers and so we introduced ourselves and chatted for awhile.
On route to our next destination, we passed through a designated Street Performance area where the Treme Brass Band was playing. With the great tradition of a second line parade in New Orleans, they had led a parade on Friday night to open the Festival.
The next thing we did will easily rank in the Top Ten of all of our Folk Festivals experiences and it took place on the Maryland Traditions Foodways Stage. Smith Island lies in the Chesapeake Bay, twelve miles west of Crisfield, Maryland. Reachable by ferry, it is famous for its Smith Island Cake, a simple iced layer cake with traditionally at least 8 layers. In 2008 it was designated as the official dessert of the state of Maryland. Mary Ada Marshall is a lifetime resident of Smith Island and learned to bake from her mother, grandmother and mother-in-law. She had a great personality and we were particularly touched when she got choked up wishing that those three women were alive today to see all the attention that this “just cake” was garnering now.
Before leaving the Folk Life area, we caught the last song by The Sensational Royal Lights, a family group founded over six decades ago.
We had hoped we would have been able to at least taste the Smith Island Cake but when we didn’t we both needed something else to eat. We decided It wouldn’t kill us to eat a vegetable so we dug in to some tasty roasted corn.
Back over to the amphitheater, the sun set as we listened to The Bing Brothers Band, from Charleston, West Virginia, with guest fiddler Jake Krack, playing old-time string music.
At 8:45, we were back where we had started that morning, on the front row of the City Stage, this time for Mariachi Los Camperos. This band has been to Richmond at least twice, maybe even three times, but we never tire of them. Because of their showmanship, musicianship and singing voices, it was an absolute treat to be hear them and see them again, especially from the front row!
Our final performance would conveniently be on the dance stage (close to the car!). Janet participated in the salsa lesson but once the Orquesta SCC from The Bronx started playing, they were simply too loud to enjoy. However, while hanging out at that stage, I did finally manage to photograph the volunteers’s shirts and capture a cute trio working the Bucket Brigade!
So we called it a day.
Correction. We called it a great day.
Thank you National Folk Festival and thank you Salisbury.
