Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend 2024, day one! I arrived Wednesday night. Somehow I have a farmer's tan. How did I acquire that? I've already drunk my first Mai Tai of the trip at the reliably wonderful Golden Tiki (with my friend Kevin). The cocktails, kitsch decor and exotica soundtrack at Golden Tiki are sublime.

Descendant
Demerara rum, pisco, cachaça, pineapple juice, lemon juice, lime juice, honey syrup, grenadine, and a dash of bitters
Tumblr media
"No, they weren't zombies. They were people, or they used to be."
Nathan Drake pulled out his journal and flipped to a page labeled Scare O' Meter. He turned it to me and pointed to a drawing right between a "demon sasquatch" and Sully's mustache: a crudely sketched rendition of a terrifying creature hunched over and baring sharp teeth, aptly labeled "slippery naked guy."
He explained that the legendary El Dorado wasn't a city of gold at all, it was a golden sarcophagus. Whoever was buried inside had some kind of viral infection that changed people, mutated them into terrible, rage-filled monsters. This mummy was worshipped for its great "power" and sealed in gold inside a place of reverence. Spanish conquistadors found El Dorado in the heart of the Amazon in the 16th century and stole it away, bringing it halfway across the Pacific Ocean to an uncharted island as far away from civilization as possible. They paid greatly for their theft. The sarcophagus was opened and the Spaniards were infected, mutating into creatures no longer human. Over the past 400 years, with each new generation born, the descendants of those Spaniards devolved further away from humanity.
A shudder ran through me as Nate finished his tale. El Dorado is at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean now, hopefully lost forever. But the descendants... they're still out there, somewhere.
Naturally, the Descendant is a riff on the infamous and dangerously delicious Zombie cocktail. The Zombie was invented by Donn Beach in 1934 and was an immediate sensation, jumpstarting the tiki craze of the 1930s. Its original recipe was a closely guarded secret until relatively recently which forced imitators to improvise, often to disastrous results. The Descendant is based primarily on the midcentury Zombie recipe written by Donn for Louis Spievak's 1950 book Barbecue Chef. Three different South American spirits are used in the Descendant to showcase El Dorado's Amazonian roots: Demerara rum from Guyana, pisco from Peru, and cachaça from Brazil.
DESCENDANT
Ingredients: 1 oz. aged Demerara rum (El Dorado 12) 1 oz. Peruvian pisco (Barsol) 1 oz. cachaça (Novo Fogo) 1 oz. pineapple juice 1 oz. lemon juice 1 oz. lime juice 0.5 oz. honey syrup 0.25 oz. grenadine 1 dash Angostura bitters Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with pebble ice or crushed ice. Shake and dump directly into a Zombie or chimney glass. Garnish with fresh mint, slapped to express the oils.
As always, the types of spirits you use are important for the flavor profile of the cocktail. For the aged Demerara rum, I use El Dorado aged 12 years but Pusser's British Navy Rum, Hamilton 86, or other aged El Dorado rums will serve just as well.
A Peruvian pisco is preferred over a Chilean one. Each country has specific requirements for pisco production and distillation. Chilean piscos are often distilled multiple times and then watered down to proof while Peruvian piscos are bottled directly from the still. This means Peruvian piscos often have more depth and flavor than their Chilean counterparts. However, if you find the flavor of Peruvian pisco too potent, a Chilean pisco may suit your taste better. If you'd like other uses for pisco, I recommend a pisco sour.
For cachaça, my number one recommendation is the fantastic brand Novo Fogo. Their Silver cachaça is what I use and is the easiest to get your hands on, but I wouldn't hesitate to try the Chameleon or Barrel-Aged expressions if you can find them. Not only does Novo Fogo make delicious spirits, but they operate the Un-endangered Forest Project and are dedicated to rehabilitating the Atlantic Forest in Brazil, which has been decimated by deforestation.
As mentioned previously, store bought grenadine will be much more syrupy and sweet than making your own, so homemade is recommended. It's a fast and easy process and all you need is pomegranate juice and sugar (although pomegranate molasses and orange blossom water help provide more depth and texture). If you do use store bought grenadine, adjust the amount of honey syrup you use to balance out the sweetness.
The Descendant uses honey syrup and grenadine in place of the Demerara syrup and passionfruit syrup (or fassionola) used in the midcentury Zombie recipe. I chose these ingredients for the Descendant because they taste great, they can be found in other recipes in the Uncharted Cookbook, and they're more readily available and easily made. However, if you have Demerara syrup or fassionola on hand, feel free to swap those in instead and see which you prefer.
The recipes for honey syrup and grenadine can be found here.

Inscryption cocktails
Tumblr media
Each Scrybe would have a menu reflecting their three minions (increasing in size - a shot, a squat drink, then a tall drink) and then the main cocktail based off of the menu's titular Scrybe.
Each scrybe also has a dish relating to them and how they play their cards.
Thank you @dariusblake for your suggestions on different flavour profiles and placemat details.
Tumblr media
Leshy's menu:
"The prospector"
A caramel whisky shot rimmed with golden nugget cereal crumbs. Modelled after the gold nuggets the prospector can transform cards into.
"The Angler"
A salted liquorish cocktail using anise flavouried liquior and fish-shaped gummy salted liquorish hanging over the rim of a bucket shaped recepticle. Modelled after the Angler's bait bucket card.
"The Trapper/Trader"
A rich, blood-red velvet cocktail made with red grenadine and a chocolate liquior. Served in a stein with a fake bit of pelt padding embellishing the handle. More modelled after his trading role than how he plays cards.
"The Scrybe of Beasts"
A botanical gin-based cocktail comprised of rhubarb gin, elderflower tonic and red grenadine seeping in from the top like a drop of blood, garnished with a sprig of elderflower. Served in a tall tiki mask glass (ideally etched to look like his masks, but a normal tiki glass would work) Playing into his tree-like appearance, emphasis on blood sacrifice (thematically and mechanically), and because he's an old man (hence use of elderflower specifically).
"Eight Fucking Bears"
Technically more of a food challenge than a regular dish of eight very spicy pork ribs with a thick, blood-like sauce.
Tumblr media
Grimora's menu:
"Royal Dominguez"
A limoncello and triple sec shot rimmed with crushed sherbert. Based on his death from scurvy at sea.
"Sawyer Patel"
A stout Sheep Dog peanut butter whisky and ginger ale drink served in a tumbler lined with a dash of peanut butter drizzle.
"Kaycee Hobbes"
A refreshing blueberry vodka and fireball slushy served in a tall glass and garnished with blueberries and cinammon caramel drizzle.
"The Scrybe of The Dead"
A black forest espresso martini made with Kaluha, cherry vodka, chocolate liquior and a shot of espresso. Served in a china teacup with a pitted black cherry skewered on the teacup's rim.
"The Lord of Bones"
Fried chicken drumsticks and wings served in a coffin-shaped basket.
Tumblr media
Magnificus' menu:
"Goobert"
Lime jelly(jello) shot. The shot glass would have little googly eyes stuck to it and an edible paper wizard hat instead of an umbrella.
"The Pike Mage"
A sweet and spicy chipotle-orange syrup, bourbon and vanilla liquior cocktail served in a martini glass and garnished with a skewered glacie cherry donning an edible paper wizard hat.
"The Lonely Wizard"
Black Sangria (made with dark wine - blackberries, black grapes and black plums) imbued with green edible glitter. Served in a wine glass and garnished with a lime slice donning an edible paper wizard hat.
"The Scrybe of Magicks"
A colourful tie-dye milkshake of creme de menthe, mint ice cream and strawberry cream liquieur embellished with edible glitter. Served in a tall flute and garnished with a swirl of whipped cream, rainbow sprinkles and a spherical marshmallow made to look like Magnificus' missing arcane eye in place of a cherry.
"Mox"
A dessert made of blue raspberry, orange and apple sorbet scoops. Sprinkled with crushed sherbert and gemstone-shaped hard candies.
Tumblr media
Po3's menu:
"The Inspector"
A simple blue raspberry sour shot with a blue raspberry popping candy rim.
"The Melter"
A vibrantly fire-coloured chocolate orange spritz. Mixing chocolate liquieur with aperol and prosecco. Garnished with curled orange rind and dark chocolate shavings.
"The Dredger"
A boba blue gin fizz. Made of bombay sapphire gin, lemon juice blue curaçao and soda water with lemon boba. Served with a silver coloured straw.
"The Scrybe of Technology"
A bright blue bubblegum cocktail topped with sweet sparkling wine and lemonade. Served in a tall, angular glass. The most boring of the Scrybe cocktails tbh.
"Kilo-bites"
Byte-sized sharing platter of savoury pastries and square pizza slices made to look like floppy discs.
I'll be honest, I was drawing a blank for Po3's menu. Dude's Vox if Vox had self-control, which takes away a lot of vibrancy to bounce off of for flavour profiles and visual ideas.
Tumblr media
Bonus Mycologist dish:
Roasted ox-tongue mushroom, stuffed with mushroom paté and blue cheese with a creamy but sharp cheese sauce.
Ngl, Leshy's is my favourite menu. Definitely tempted to make it, maybe for an Inscryption themed party?

Congratulations on your turn as Iris! I'm so happy to hear you're treading the boards again!
I might get the chance to visit San Francisco early in next year, and I was wondering if you might have any suggestions of fun things to do, off the beaten path a bit, in the colder months in that fair city?
I greatly apologize for taking so long to answer this! While many of my favorite things are gone (I still weep for steampunk stores and revival movie houses,) there are still cool, unique things to do on a trip. Here are some of them which were open as of a year ago.
Japantown Mall: The best place to be, hands down. The mall itself has amazing authentic Japanese food, a giant half-Japanese and half-English bookstore with a whole level devoted to manga and light novels, and lots of small stalls of crepes and boba tea. Across the street you'll find the Crown and Crumpet, a cute tea room with an upper floor that sells EGL brands. Even if you don't buy anything, just walking around is a great day!
Golden Gate Park: Take a walk and see the beauty of nature! Have a snack at the Japanese Tea Garden while admiring the koi pond! If the tickets aren't too expensive, go to the Academy of Sciences aquarium and say hi to the albino alligator for me! Admire the Shakespeare garden if it's in season! Another fun place to be for a whole afternoon.
Lupa Trattoria: The best Italian food I've ever had in the United States.
Haight-Ashbury: While not the goth and hippie paradise it used to be, this is still a cool couple streets. There's a science fiction bookstore called Borderlands, another cool indie bookstore called Booksmith, a huge vintage clothing store called Relic Vintage, and some pretty good thrift stores as well.
City Lights: Not done book shopping? Go to the place that published beat generation writings back in the day, which now sells an eclectic collection of intellectual, classic and offbeat titles. When I would get a book and go read it at the nearbye Cafe Zoetrope, I felt like the coolest person in the world.
Pier 39 Sea Lions: Sea lions!!! An earthquake sent them here, and they've stayed here ever since. They sit on a bunch of large rafts wrestling, showing off, or sleeping in the sun. They always cheered me up.
Exploratorium: A totally unique science museum that encourages you to touch and interact with the exhibits. They have special presentations as well, so check the website to see what's going on
Musée Mécanique: Do you want to take a headlong plunge into the uncanny valley? Of course you do! This free mini-museum has animations and carnival games from yesteryear, and the huge and terrifying Laughing Sally. It's in walking distance of Pier 39, too.
Lovejoy's Tea Room: They catered my wedding!!! Great tea and pastries, and a super cozy atmosphere, plus you sometimes get to see egl friends have meetups in gorgeous attire.
The Castro: As gentrified as it's gotten, there's still something wonderful about a neighborhood with rainbow crosswalks and pride flags waving everywhere. Sob outside of the late lamented Castro Theater (now a concert venue,) go to a souvenir store, walk down to Bi-Rite Creamery for ice cream if the line isn't too long.
Bourbon and Branch, Smuggler's Cove: If you like vintage cocktails, have a night out at Bourbon and Branch, a retro speakeasy, or Smuggler's Cove, an amazing tiki bar. Call ahead for B&B, since you need reservations and the password.
Folsom Street Fair: If you ever go again in summer and are not squicked by kink, check out this fetish festival! (And no, scaremongers, children can not actually get in and be traumatized by this, as they check your ID.) Buy a corset, have experts tie you up, get sex ed from guys who've been teaching it for fifty years, see everybody in their awesome outfits. (It is somehow always on the hottest day of the year, though, so stay hydrated, especially if you're in head to toe leather.)
The Alamo Drafthouse: While not unique to San Francisco, I'm always happy to be in a city that has one of these. This movie theater shows new films, classics and cult favorites, and you can order food while you watch (try the milkshakes!) One of my best moviegoing experiences was when they showed The Lost Boys, and all the goths in the lobby looked at each other and nodded, like yeah, we all know why we're here.

Because
Because a hotel cannot, like ever, throw in a free suite for a day in exchange for above suite - the most expensive on offer, currently, mind you - to be featured in an interview. It's called product placement and it's a very common, basic even, commercial gesture.
Because a picture staged as hell on a bicycle means at least savage sex to a dozen middle-aged idiots fawning on an obscure blog. Mind you, I am no architect and my 3D vision sucks, but I still think there is something very strange about these two pics of the same spot, when you put side by side...
...the real Beach House Suite of The Shutters....
Tumblr media
... and the one on BBC's selfie:
Tumblr media
Where is the blue carpet? The undercover Shipper Pterodactyl ate it in a fit of rage, perhaps. What is that golden frame rim that is not featured in the regular pic? Why did they move the table where the couch was, given the dining room's layout? To do what? Ease traffic? Are you fucking with me? Why the completely in your face, totally inorganic mess on that table (motorcycle helmet- check, roses in a box -check)? Why is the perspective so bizarre?
Nothing makes sense. But it's a legit fuckation, because *urv said so.
Maybe the key is here, maybe not, but: there are two Beach House Suites in that hotel. With a slightly different layout:
Tumblr media
The virtual tour only shows the two-bedroom one, that being said. There is no way to compare and the other has no dining room area, in all fairness. Still, it should have a table of sorts, only a smaller one and proportions would be slightly different, too.
Because likes and follows, for even Montana Trash was resurrected for a like on IG, as we speak. It's been preached before, but once again would not hurt: if a like means sex/love, then I am the biggest whore in town and I am aggressively hitting every single day on all my married male friends, on Facebook.
But sure, go ahead and believe the Impetuous Pirate Ukulele Fanfic. What's next? A Tiki-Hide-and-Seek Adventure?
Barely. It seems BBC is back home. How convenient. Look here, not there.
Onwards.
[edited: I am told, with good reason, that the bizarre perspective is due to the pic being a selfie. It's also very true I am no expert at those. Point taken, of course, and gladly so. But the rest, oh, the whole damn rest stays.]

Bottom-Tier major villains of various video game franchises
Super Mario: In terms of platformers, Wart. In terms of RPGs, King Olly. In the series as a whole, one of the villains from the sports spin-offs for the Switch. Donkey Kong: Ghastly King. Tiki Tong and Lord Fredrik might just be recycled ideas, but at least they have story presence. Ghastly King comes from a game with no plot or build-up. Legend of Zelda: Onox from Oracle of Seasons. Doesn't get much screentime as his contemporary Veran. And at the end of the day, he's just a hired gun for Twinrova. Metroid: MB from Other M. Either that or Master Brain from Federation Force. Kirby: Dark Nebula from Squeak Squad. Which is even more embarrassing when it possessing Daroach was a harder fight than its true form. Star Fox: Anglar Emperor from Command. General Scales at least had story and presentation down, but no actual boss fight because Rare was rushed to finish the game. Pokémon: Rocket Executive Archer from the Johto games in terms of mainline RPGs. He's only met at the very end of the Team Rocket subplot. As for the multiple spin-off titles, who knows? Fire Emblem: Garon from Fates because I keep hearing those two games were rushed. Njörðr from Heroes could contest him since he remains unfought in his Book. Kid Icarus: Orcos from Of Myths and Monsters. By virtue of not appearing in Uprising to get fleshed out. Wario: Golden Diva from Land 4, since she's never encountered outside of her boss fight. Demon Head from Virtual Boy at least is forced to guide Wario in an amusing hard mode ending. Street Fighter: Holy heck, did Street Fighter V's awful story did Necalli dirty. M. Bison and F.A.N.G insisted on controlling the plot. Crash Bandicoot: The Viscount from Boom Bang. Willie Wumpacheeks from Tag Team Racing at least had an argument if the narrative meant anything. Spyro the Dragon: If it's just the Classic series, Gnasty Gnorc in the original game. If the Skylanders games are included, probably Hektore from the first 3DS game. Jak & Daxter: Gol and Maia Acheron from The Precursor Legacy. Sonic the Hedgehog: Witchcart or Great Battle Kukku XV, both are Classic-era villains of the Tails spin-offs. As for Dreamcast or Modern-eras, who knows?

Now that the National Pride Fusion Flag Wars has ended, we can return to the Video Game Flag Wars!
