I saw Deep Cover, and once again, I have more questions than answers. But now… so, uhhhh, I’ll just rip off the bandage now. Did we all see Kotoko kill the girl or just me?

She really had me there. I thought the kidnapper was her victim. It thought it would make sense. He is the one we saw lying on the ground in Harrow, and the line about “Useless weaklings…” made sense if the girl witnessing the attack protested the amount of force she used (since Undercover implies Kotoko stomped her victim to death). It would have been brutal to watch at any age. Deep Cover shows the girl’s fear and subsequent tears when Kotoko first approaches her. We also see a clip of her, battered and crying, and clinging to Kotoko. At first, I thought maybe this was Kotoko’s POV of when she rescued the girl. She was hurt by the kidnapper and terrified of Kotoko, so she grabbed her to plead to be spared. But the first clip where we are seeing from the girl’s POV, Kotoko seemed to reach out to her. In the second clip, we see the bruised child hug her and seemingly plead for mercy. The lighting in both scenes is different. I first attributed it to maybe Kotoko’s shadow or the girl hid behind a box during her attack.

But the article shows that her meeting the girl in the park happened after she killed the kidnapper. The girl has no marks on her. Granted, we don’t know how much time has passed, so any bruises on her could have healed. The girl shows off her brand new hat to Kotoko. I’ve seen two translations of the article that Kotoko was paying more attention to than the girl and both said that the girl retracted her statement. Then we see the girl, post kidnapping because of her Lucky hat, how unfortunate, imitate Kotoko. If it wasn’t for the article establishing that this was after Kotoko killed the kidnapper, I would have thought that maybe this was before the girl was kidnapped and around the time Kotoko stomped the crap out of the scam artist. The girl first approaches her and then pulls back when her hero gives her the stink eye and ignores her.

Maybe she went and followed Kotoko. She looks unsure as she watches Kotoko storm off. Her personal hero is mad at her. Is it because she retracted her statement? Maybe she went to follow her to explain herself. The girl looks heartbroken when she’s bruised and battered and clinging to Kotoko. I had thought Kotoko gripping the back of the girl’s jumper like that was her maybe freaking out post murder and not wanting to be touched. But now, was it disgust that made her wrench the girl off her like that? That useless weakling kneeling before her asked for an explanation that she then refused to understand. Maybe Kotoko’s frustrations boiled to a head. She could be facing serious jail time if her killing of the kidnapper was not found to be reasonable within the self-defense argument. Her partner is too kind, too weak to understand that she needed to do what she did or else the kidnapper would have hurt more people? Why is she refusing to understand?

It doesn’t quite match the “Fufu… feels so good,” line unless Kotoko’s anguished face during her wolfsona transformation is her completely losing her rationale and acting out on pure instinct. But then again, maybe it does. She could be operating out of a sunk-cost fallacy and trying to punish the other prisoners to escape her own feelings of guilt, if she did kill the girl for turning on her.

Really says something about the dire state of offerings for men interested in sewing their own clothes that even searching things like "interesting men's clothing patterns" brings up articles with links to four or five whole websites that primarily offer admittedly nice but practically identical patterns for making button-ups and work pants and maybe a varsity/bomber jacket if you're lucky.

(Branching out into historical costuming for everyday wear is like your one shot at variation, and even then, the ratio of men's to women's patterns on every website is frustrating to say the least.)

Patternmakers as a trans man I am begging you. Give me a little more to work with here.
