listen. i love el and i think she's a fascinating character. we all know this. i am very clear about this. but like. it really is SO crazy how she really came in and, like... fucked will's life up so fucking bad lmao. i know that it wasn't her fault, and i'm not saying it is, but that's just... such an excruciating writing choice.

it was a choice to have her be the one that opened the gate & essentially sliced will's life into an ugly before and after. it was a choice to have her replace him as mike's number one as soon as she came back into their lives. it was a choice to make her the party's mage and then "change" will from being their wizard to their cleric. it was a choice to make her his sister. it was a choice to purposely have her wear his clothes and have the same bangs. it was a choice to have her ignore him on mike's first day in lenora, despite the fact that he was mike's friend, too, and first. it was a choice to make her oblivious to his feelings.

it was a choice to make them love and genuinely care about each other. it was a choice to make her feel like a monster for everything that'd happened and kept happening. it was a choice to make will not resent her. it was a choice to make him support her enough that he's willing to uphold her lies to mike (!!!) of all people with his inaction.

it was a choice to have him spill his heart out to mike and gift him his painting all in her name. to have him be the one to unknowingly make mike finally say "i love you" to her in response to his confession. to have him realize too late that he's been needlessly pushing mike towards her this whole time.

it was a choice to place will right beside mike, his first ever friend and keeper of his heart, when he told el that his life started just as will's ended.

it was... a bold fucking choice to replace will with el in mike's eyes due to outside influence. it throws them into chaos and disarray because el and will are not interchangeable, and it shows in how...

mike seeks from el everything that will already gives him.

mike readily gives will everything that el begs him for.

el cannot read or understand mike in the innate, wordless, and familiar way that will does.

mike cannot be vulnerable with el, but he opens up to will without even needing to be asked.

mike always heeds, trusts, and listens to will, even when they're arguing or going through a rough patch.

mike always knows just how to mend things with will, because he knows exactly what he needs and he doesn't ever hesitate to do and give it. nor does he need anyone to help him with their conflicts either. he just knows.

el is always left waiting for him to do things for her that he's currently doing for will.

will visibly hates and feels uncomfortable lying to mike, but el can do it consistently with ease.

will is the one that loves mike how he truly wants (and needs) to be loved.

will hasn't been able to move on in full, because he was cast out of his own story and demoted to a supporting role behind the new lead.

el hasn't been able to find out who she really is, because she's been thrust into roles that were never meant for her to begin with. she has always been contorted into the shape of whatever others need or want her to be, but they don't fit because they aren't her.

and, like... there are so many things in this story, which is to say the show as a whole, that would not have happened had the men in el's life not done that. had they allowed her to just be, it's highly likely that the dominoes would've never fallen the way they have.

thankfully, the narrative is set up in such a way that it appears this disorder will rectify itself, but it's still so... upsetting to think about lol.

it all boils down to choices: who gets to make them, what choices they have, why they made those choices, and what happens after. that's all the show is: a series of choices, or a lack thereof, and their consequences with some monster mumbo-jumbo sprinkled on top.

i know cc meant "fights like hell" both about literal fighting (ie how jem taught will) and also largely jem's fierce will to live, but man it got me thinking about how good a shadowhunter he was. even when he was actively poisoned and dying he could still fight. i mean in clockwork prince in that scene where they scrabble outside yorkshire manor, it’s jem who bests will despite lacking will's build due to his sickness. at age 12 he was a perfect shot with knife throwing. when we see modern jem fighting, he’s always deadly. sometimes i wonder about an alternate world where jem was never ill, and how amazing a fighter he really could be, and how freaking OP jem would've been with cortana. and then i cry quietly. ah

I feel like I talk about this a LOT (sorry to friends who know me irl), but I do think Princess Kraehe’s introduction and her theme being Gymnopédie no. 1 is absolute genius!!! If you think about it, this is the antagonist’s debut! We’ve waited for half of the first act for the raven to reappear, and it’s this big, dramatic reveal! Tutu is about to return the heart shard of curiosity (I think, I can’t remember the exact name), and then Kraehe appears and snatches it away!

And you think: naturally, the antagonist/rival deserves a big, orchestral reveal for this whirlwind of feathers! But it’s not. The music in that moment when the dust settles and Kraehe floats down is Erik Satie’s “Gymnopédie no. 1,” and it’s soft and contemplative and slow and sad (quite literally the pieces are meant to be played “douloureux” or full of pain). It’s really fitting for a girl whose past and future were stolen from her, who was cast in this villain role against her will, who doesn’t even know who she really is. It’s why when she’s asked who she is, she breaks, unable to discern whether she’s Rue or Kraehe, and the music reflects that part of her.

I love the piece, and I also love Rue, and I’m glad Princess Tutu the show gives her that piece of musical development!

it’s cold out. billy’s hands shake as he brings the lighter up. the flame sparks color into the night.

steve’s eyes meet his.

billy’s hands shake.

he tells himself it’s still from the cold.

tells himself it has nothing to do with steve. nothing to do with the way steve wraps a hand around his wrist. brings the lighter closer.

the moments broken when steve lets go. closes his eyes. takes a drag of his cigarette.

billy fumbles to light his own.

“pretty.” steve breathes out. “don’tcha think?”

billy’s eyes flick up. he sees steve’s head tipped back. profile illuminated by the moonlight.

“the stars.” steve lets smoke pour out of his nose. “the stars are pretty.”

“yeah.” billy stares at steve. “real pretty.”

“don’t know the names though.” steve frowns as he looks up. “never learnt.”

“i do.” billy feels warm as steve’s gaze settles on him again. “i did.”

“tell me about them?”

billy lets his eyes drop to the space between them. something to focus on. “you want me to read your palm too, stevie?” he grins. teasing. “tell you your future?”

a shoulder knocks against his. “asshole.” steve says. voice too gentle. too fond. “just-” steve sighs in a way billy thinks he’ll remember forever. “tell me about them. please.”

billy tips his head back “yeah.” looks at the inky black sky above them. “yeah. okay.”

and he does. tell steve about the stars. and steve listens. listens like no one ever has before. like billy’s talking about something important.

like billy’s something important.

“you know” billy says. all casual. as if he doesn’t feel as scattered as the stars themselves. “there’s twice as many in california.”

billy watches the crease between steve’s eyebrows deepen. watches his mouth twist. confused.

“bullshit.” steve says. with a smile on his face.

“not bullshit.” billy taps a finger. ashes his cigarette. watches the cherry glow red. “if you go to the beach. to the sea.” he lets his eyes slip shut. “you just gotta look up. ‘n then down.”

steve hums. thoughtful. billy wonders what that means. what steve’s thinking. he opens his eyes again. looks up. to the one set of stars hanging over them.

“i think.” steve says. slowly. carefully. almost as if he’s afraid of his own words. “that there’d be three times as many.”

billy knocks his shoe against steve’s. “how’d you figure?”

their eyes meet. again. “you’d be there.” steve lifts a hand. taps billy’s nose. gently. brushes a knuckle over his cheeks. “with these.”

billy freezes. stares back at steve. eyes too big. too wide. vunerable.

“with-”

“with your freckles, stargazer.” billy feels his cheeks warm at the name. feels himself tremble. “three times as many stars.” steve counts on his fingers “sky, sea, billy.”

he says billy’s name like something meaningful. like it’s a confession.

billy stays quiet. doesn’t know how to respond. steve’s expression falls slightly. smile turning into something smaller. he goes to pull his hand back.

billy panics. grabs at his sleeve.

steve looks nervous. billy doesn’t like that. he wants to reassure him. wants to tell him.

can’t tell him.

has to tell him-

“four times as many.”

“four- what?”

“four times as many.” billy puts his cigarette out. holds steve’s wrist with his other hand. pulls the sleeve back. traces a finger over warm skin. “with these. four times as many.”

steve’s smile comes back. lights up his whole face. billy feels his chest tighten. he watches steve’s gaze fall to his lips.

“sky, sea, billy, steve.” steve says. whispers. loud enough for only the two of them to hear. the two of them and the stars. “i like that.”

and billy closes the gap. tightens his grip on steve’s arm as cold lips press against his. steve cups billy’s face. hands gentle. as if he’s something fragile.

maybe steve’s right. maybe he is.

maybe that’s okay. for tonight.

billy breaks the kiss. presses his forehead to steve’s. feels warm breath ghost over his lips. steve laughs. laces their fingers together.

“i like you, stargazer.” billy counts the moles on steve’s neck as he talks. “i like you a lot.”

Actually yes thanks for giving me the excuse to rant. Hold on. I'm typing furiously rn.

-Okay first of all they gave us the most ridiculously confusing plot I've ever seen. The twist with Sonya being Animus was kinda cool but they never really. Explained why she had a bond with him? She mentioned he used to be kindhearted at some point but we never see that literally ever at any point in the movie?

-The storyline is so all over the place it's a HOT mess. Especially the scene right after Natsu escapes the weird bird cage thing he runs off to find the others and suddenly they're all there? For some reason? Where did they come from. Why didn't they have a little reuniting scene. I literally rewound the movie to make sure I didn't accidentally skip a scene but nope they just made the most awkward cut/story progression in history I guess!!!

-The fanservice was so. SO bad. Like yeah the majority of the time I can at least tolerate it but this time it just made me extremely uncomfortable. Why are Erza and Lucy's boobs SO fucking large. Why did they have to make Lucy dance in like two strips of cloth. I thought I woke up in an alternate universe where Fairy Tail was a hentai. I genuinely wanted to vomit lmao

-The animation style really threw me off like I can tell it was either animated by a different studio or they wanted to try a different art style for the movie? But it just felt wrong and the proportions and faces were weird and. Yeah idk.

-What was up with the Three Stars?? Iirc we never got to learn their names or what their motivations were they were literally just. There. And they were built up to be these super powerful wizards only to get their asses kicked by FT like two scenes later. I get that being a movie obviously the fights had to be shortened but they literally did the same thing in Phoenix Priestess but WAY better. They really were like yeah uh we need some enemies for Team Natsu to fight let's just go with these guys and not give them any personality or backstory or motivations. (Except for the doll dad he was okay I guess)

-WHY WAS LEVY THERE. LITERALLY. ACTUALLY. She literally did nothing she served NO purpose in the movie she was just there?? Did they just want to shove in as many cameos as possible??? I know generally Levy isn't much of a fighter which is fine, I was kinda expecting them to do a Gajevy scene where Gajeel rescues her from some soldiers or smth which would have been fine but they didn't even do that. She literally just stood there and had like 2 voice lines. GO GIRL GIVE US NOTHING

-SPEAKING OF CAMEOS this is more personal beef than anything but man WHYYY wasn't Loke in the movie,, my boy my beloved my stupid idiot lion I'm so mad he wasn't even onscreen for like, 5 seconds

-I'm sorry but Juvia was so unhinged this movie her possessive/stalker behavior over Gray was actually super fucking creepy lmao

-What did they do to Happy. What the FUCK did they do to Happy
