A restless waves rise and fall microfic (series). 🏴‍☠️ Pirate Jily AU. @jilymicrofics February Prompt 28: Daring || 996 Words

It's been ages since they'd been ashore, and James is itching to get his feet on solid ground. The past few months had been upending in the best way, ever since he and Lily found out she was with child, but James longed for the solid ground beneath his feet and a respite from the ship and all the duties warring for his attention.

They drop anchor in a harbor near the shore and the landing party—Fabian, Peter, Frank, Henry, Benjy—gather around the railing and work the dinghy into the water. James counts the coin in his pouch a fifth time as they wait for Sirius to join them, wanting to make certain this trek wouldn't be for nothing.

In her latest correspondence, Euphemia had impressed upon him the importance of a variety of fruit in Lily's diet as her pregnancy continues. On a ship such as The Minnie, fruit was always front-of-mind in an effort to keep scurvy at bay, but the rations per crew member were small—certainly not enough for a woman with child. He'd done some asking around at their last port and learned of a woman in a nearby French colony who dealt in the fruit trade.

"Are we ready?"

James' head whips up at the sound of his wife's voice and she's standing before him, a smug, defiant look on her face as she sheathes a sword at her hip. Lovely as ever, her buttoned overcoat hanging open around the small bump of her belly, the wind picks up some tendrils of her hair and brushes them across her face as she stares at him, eyebrow quirked as if daring him to say something.

He takes the bait, regardless.

"What are you doing?" he asks in a hushed tone, aware of the wary eyes watching them. The bickering (for lack of a better term) between Captain and First Mate had gotten quite frequent over the last month aboard the ship, with Lily's insistence to continue doing her duties and normal and James' arguments to the contrary. "We agreed you'd stay and man the ship."

"Remus said walking would be good for me." Her smile is sweet but her eyes are a deadly, glittering green.

James' gaze flickers up to where Remus watches them from across the deck, shrugging apologetically. For a brief moment James questions whether it's actually the medic's orders or if his wife had somehow...suggested that he prescribe her such a treatment, but before he's able to really ponder it too much, his eyes catch on the missing member of their landing party next to Remus.

Clutched in Sirius' hands are the ship's maps and a compass, a distinct lack of a weapon on his person.

"Winds have picked up," he says by way of an explanation. "Anchoring here gives me an opportunity to make sure our next course is accurate. Besides"—here, his brows raise—"Evans wasn't taking no for an answer."

A resigned sigh passes through James' lips as his eyes travel back to Lily. Though her body continues to undergo the changes of pregnancy, she refuses to sit out of duties or missions. He had agreed with that course of action at first, but lately Lily was experiencing more pain and he could see her fighting through it as she stubbornly pressed on with her tasks. He really thought her sitting out this little quest was an unspoken signal that they were on the same page, but it appeared that was a discussion that they'd undoubtedly need to have soon.

Still, Lily's face glows with the spoils of her triumph, and James can't help feeling—in this moment—happy that she's gotten her way. His lips turn up slightly at the corners as his gaze sweeps from her to the rest of the landing party.

"Alright, let's load up. This should be relatively straightforward."

A chorus of 'aye's rings out and as Lily turns to make her way to the dinghy, James gently grabs her arm, lowering his voice to where only she can hear.

"The second you start feeling any sort of pain or fatigue, you rest. Understand?"

"But—"

"That's an order, Lily. From your captain."

Lily's eyes narrow, but the way she chews on her cheek as a delicate flush crawls up her neck satisfies James enough that he releases her arm.

"Aye, Captain," she relents, holding his gaze a moment longer before walking over to the railing and kicking a leg over. James watches nervously, already dreading that night's inevitable argument but feeling firm in his belief all the same.

They'd make sure she had everything she needed for their child, but she has to start recognizing her limitations. He'd never ask her to bow out from her duties altogether, but it will only get harder. And for her sake—and the baby's—she needed to stop pushing herself.

A hand on his shoulder startles him from his fugue of worry.

"If it makes you feel better," Peter says, a sympathetic smile on his face as his blue eyes glint with determination, "I won't leave her side."

Some of the tension evaporates from James' body and he claps the man on the back as he moves to the railing of the ship. Peter was the best swordsman on the ship and while James would be very surprised if this meeting went sideways, he's learned enough to know the chance isn't ever zero. Someone to aid Lily should things go south, to keep her from pushing herself to her limit, greatly alleviates some of his stress.

Peter's swinging his leg over the side—the last of the landing party other than James. James expels a breath, shaking out his hands. Lily's decision (deception) to join the landing party had thrown him for a loop, but there was no going back now.

And well, maybe she'd be amenable to his requests once she was plied full of every fruit in the Caribbean.

EVENT 012 {APRIL 19 - 28} ANNUAL SPRING GARDEN FESTIVAL

It's that time of year again! Aurora Bay's Botanical Gardens will once again be hosting its annual Spring Garden Festival!

For the past eleven years, Aurora Bay has held one of their most famous events in April, hosting a flower and garden festival to celebrate the end of winter and the arrival of spring! The botanical gardens are always decorated in beautiful fairy lights, topiaries, and of course, some of the most gorgeous flowers you've ever seen!

Each night for a week, residents of Aurora Bay can buy their ticket for admission to the Spring Garden Festival held at the Botanical Gardens. All day there will be vendors selling art, jewelry, clothes, etc. There will be live music, food, dancing, and even a little wine and cheese tasting for the adults!

There are plenty of things for children to do as well! There's always face painting, games, and since this year the festival lands during Earth Day, there will also be educational booths for children and adults alike to learn more about gardening and nature and how they can help take care of wildlife and keep the planet clean!

This year as well the Botanical Gardens has dedicated an entire section of the garden to a sunflower field, perfect for photo-ops!

And like every year, around sunset, everyone will meet in the center of the garden by the fountain and count down from ten to zero and the lights displayed all over the garden will be turned on!

Here are a few new things to look forward to at this year's event:

Assassin's Creed: The Golden City Review

So I recently finished reading Assassin's Creed: The Golden City by Jaleigh Johnson.

I'd rate this a 4 out of 5 stars.

Below the read-more I'll go a bit in-depth on what I liked, disliked and ect. This is NOT spoiler free, so if you want to avoid spoilers do not read this review.

The Plot:

"A young emperor’s life hangs in the balance in ancient Constantinople, and only the Brotherhood of Assassins can save him, in this action-packed historical adventure from the award-winning Assassin’s Creed universe.

Constantinople, 867 – A murderous plot is afoot. Assisted by the Order of the Ancients, the emperor schemes to assassinate his son and throw the city into chaos. In response, the Hidden Ones have dispatched Assassin acolyte Hytham to join his mentor, Basim Ibn Ishaq, to infiltrate the palace and foil the emperor’s plan. But that is not his only mission… Hytham’s brotherhood have entrusted him with uncovering where Basim’s true loyalties lie and whether the master Assassin’s personal obsessions outweigh his sense of duty. For Hytham to succeed, he must tread carefully, for Constantinople is a city of shadows, and danger hides in all of them."

This book was a very quick read for me. I basically devoured it within a couple days (it only took me that long because I had to work and sleep lol).

The plot itself is very straightforward, and it's ok overall, nothing spectacular. It did feel like the author was trying to make the mystery of who the head of this branch of the Order of Ancients was, as well as who the attempted assassin of Prince Leo was, more of a surprise, but it wasn't to me personally. I also wasn't expecting it to, and I don't hold it against the book.

Here are some lines that I particularly liked;

Mist threaded the uneven ground...a thick white river that Hytham shredded as he walked.

(Chapter 1, page 7, paragraph 2).

...The dancing flame cast long shadows on the wall and revealed a dark, sinuous shape cresting the foot of the bed. Serrated scales contrasted sharply with the pale blankets...

(Chapter 8, page 84, paragraph 3).

Hytham laid his hands against the cool stones, feeling salt spray his lips, fazing out at the cast stretch of black water scrolling away to the horizon.

"I've heard the sea at night can be terrifying to new sailors unused to being on the water," Basim said.

Hytham glanced at him. "I've always found it comforting," he said, "that there's something out there in the world so much bigger and grander than myself." He smiled ruefully. "Even if it seems infinite and likely to swallow me whole."

(Chapter 14, page 143, paragraph 8).

They had maneuvered themselves behind their targets. The rain his any sound their footfalls might have made, and they moved through water as effortlessly as air. The shadows held them safely, concealing them from the rest of the world. Because the shadows were their home, that liminal space where they could hide and observe. Or hunt.

(Chapter 15, page 159, paragraph 5).

...The height was dizzying, and below them in the harbor, the ships looked like tiny toy boats, the water turned to glittering shards of broken lights.

It hurt his eyes, but it was beautiful. (Chapter 28, page 288, paragraph 3).

Characters:

Except for Hytham, Basim and Leo, most of the other side characters were rather plain in my opinion. Thyra, Anna and Eudokia Ingerina were cool. I was hoping we were going to get more insight into Thyra and the Varangian Guard due to Hytham masquerading as a member, but there really wasn't much except for Basim asking a couple questions here or there.

It was nice to get a book with Hytham's POV. We get to see some of that rash, desperate to prove, but still calculating and dangerous individual we meet in AC: Valhalla. Unfortunately we don't get like, ANY backstory from him other than he used to want to be a father, until he became a Hidden One and further realized how dangerous his world was.

It was pretty disappointing as I was hoping to learn more about his story, but at least we got to see through his eyes, which was great. I love Hytham, definitely still one of my favorite characters in the Assassin's Creed series. His relationship with Leo was very sweet, and it was touching to see how quickly they bonded.

Hytham's relationship with Basim was very fun to read! The sparring scenes were some of my favorite parts of the book. It's very obvious from the get-go that Basim has some vaguely parental feelings about Hytham, where as Hytham is constantly torn between liking Basim, being unnerved by him, and struggling to trust him after Master Rayhan tells him that Basim is untrustworthy.

After Hytham makes a mistake that gets him captured by the Order of the Ancients, Basim risks the mission in order to rescue Hytham, despite not even knowing if Hytham is still alive. By the end of the book Hytham fully trusts Basim and is willing to help him search for whatever (or whomever) it is that Basim is searching for amongst the Norse.

This brings me to Basim. I loved how Jaleigh Johnson wrote him. It was perfect blend of arrogant asshole, incredibly smart, and almost supernaturally unnerving. The book seems to solidify my headcannon that yes, Basim had definitely become preoccupied with his obsession with finding Havi, but he was still absolutely loyal to the Hidden Ones and the Creed.

I do wish that his and Hytham's relationship had more time spent on it. We know that Basim thinks of Hytham as a son, that he cares deeply about him despite not wanting to (he's still haunted by the trauma of his own son's death), but we don't really get to see why. The book starts with Hytham and Basim only having known each other for a very short period of time, and the events of the book take place over what, a couple weeks? Their relationship, and Basim in general, was done very well, it just felt a little rushed at times.

Unlike with Hytham, we did get to learn more about Basim. His father was apparently abusive (whether this was before or after his father was exiled is unclear), he has a affinity with wolves, is terrified of Loki, and whatever happened to cause the loss of Enkidu has left him scarred mentally.

So all in all, I did enjoy the book and will definitely reread it! Here's to hoping that Ubi continues to put out Hytham content 🤞

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

12 as of a couple of days ago! 🥰 2 are from last year and 10 are my progress so far in the 2023 - Year of the OTP Challenge (my beloved 💖)

2. What's your total AO3 word count?

212,706 (that's about a Moby Dick's worth of words! 😦)

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Just Tiger & Bunny, and just FireSky as a pairing, at that! (Who knows if I'll ever branch out... for now I'm very happy in my little corner of the fanfic world 🥰)

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

The best cure for free fall (3,295 words) Kudos: 87

(These numbers may not look like much, and perhaps they are not, but considering I write a side ship in a small fandom, I am honestly incredibly grateful for literally every single one of these 🙏💕)

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I probably respond too much to comments, if anything 😅 I cherish them immensely, so I tend to get a little carried away, and I try to answer every single thing that people say in them 🥺💙

6. What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Oh. Uhm. I only really do happy endings, so... let me think.

Technically, the story that leaves the most angst still on the table by the end is Stereoscopy (The Hero's Shoulders), because there are some not-totally-solved things left in the background.

The one where the angst lingers closest to the end as a feeling, though, possibly enough to leave a tiny taste-memory of it in your mouth, might be To a Steadfast Heart, or possibly Second Song.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Oh, gosh. I suppose it depends on how you define happiest...

The most triumphant and satisfying ending I've done plot-wise, in my opinion, is hands-down Intertidal's.

If you're going more by something like "how much pink glitter and marshmallows is the final scene conjuring in my brain", though, it might be Love, Counted along the Fibonacci Sequence, or maybe An Honest Mistake, or Asterism (I write a lot of pink-glitter-and-marshmallows endings, sorry.)

8. Do you get hate on fics?

The haters would have to know little old me exists for me to get hate, lol. But more seriously, no, I get nothing but sweetness and I'm so grateful 💖💖💖

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Welll... I never quite mean to, but sometimes the story (and characters) ends up asking for it/needing it, and I'm so bad at saying no 😅

As for what kind... the kind that can have a 10k, E-rated chapter solely dedicated to the characters having sex, without me ever having to pick a word for "dick", lol (No, there's no trashy euphemisms, either; it's just me, my deep embarrassment, Keith Goodman's Very Polite POV, and synecdoche, my beloved, against the world 😂)

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

I haven't, and I don't think I'm terribly interested in trying (never say never, of course, but for now I can't think of any that I'd want to write). AUs and/or fusions, on the other hand, are very interesting and I'm farily sure at some point I'll end up writing one.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Again, they'd have to notice the fic to steal it 😅 (Of course, it might have happened without my knowledge, but I don't see why anyone would steal unpopular fics. And besides, it would have to either be posted on a website I don't look at, or modified to be other characters, because "my" ship tag on ao3 is far too small to hide anything in there, lol)

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

No. (I'd make a joke about them being translated from the Italian in my head to the English on the page, but I think them up in English in the first place, so it wouldn't really apply 😅)

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No, but I've "co-written" a lot of concepts/headcanons in chats and I always have an absolute blast doing that! (I'm not entirely sure I could ever co-write a fic, honestly, because I'm a bit of a control freak about my creations, and I'd probably get insufferable during the process)

14. What's your all-time favorite ship?

The only one I write, lol: FireSky!!! ❤️💜 AKA Keith Goodman/Nathan Seymour, or Sky High/Fire Emblem from Tiger & Bunny (... their hero names ship name looks like a pretty crazy crossover, lol)

15. What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

Ooof. I only have two real wips on my hands; the one I have more doubts about ever finishing is the one I was trying to write for the September leg of the 2023 YOTP Challenge (for which I ended up writing a different story altogether). It has very unconvincing logistics, and I don't know if I'll ever be able to fix that to my satisfaction.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Mmmh. I've gotten a fair bit of compliments about my characterization, so that's one, I suppose. I've also been very good so far at only writing one fic at once and actually finishing almost all of them (which is not nothing!) I also really like my metaphors/similes/analogies/symbolism a lot, especially in dream sequences, but I don't know if that's objectively a strength or just something I do well (mostly) only to my personal satisfaction.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I used to be good at not having run-on sentences, but I've gotten so much worse about it lately?!? I really need to check myself on that. And I think I'm not very good at coming up with complex plots (one initial premise to kick things off, and then following the flow from there? Doable. Several significant events actually shaping the story from more than one side? SAVE ME.)

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

Well, if the characters were speaking another language for some reason I suppose I might, but I'm only fluent in two languages, so unless I could find someone who could help me, I would probably try to avoid the issue altogether somehow.

I also think it's not an easy thing to handle, because if the reader is not supposed to understand, a few words and phrases here and there, that maybe get explained/translated in-story at the moment or later, are okay; but huge chunks that the reader can't understand would just be annoying, and if they're supposed to understand, you need to fit a translation in along with the foreign dialogue, and it might not always be easy to do so in an efficient / not cumbersome manner.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Mh. If we want to be really precise about this, I think somewhere in my parents' house is a tiny notebook with a lilac (or possibly pale pink) cover, where a strange, short scene set after the Season 1 finale of Smallville is written in pencil. But that was a one-off thing.

20. Favorite fic you've written?

Stereoscopy (The Hero's Shoulders) will always and forever be my baby; it's the one I poured the most time and soul and effort into, and the one that I consider, in a way, the definitive fic I could write for that pairing.

I do feel like I have to mention Intertidal, as well, though: it's by far my favorite of the rest my fics, and I think it has a lot to offer.

17 - EYES - How many planning documents do you have?

i dont have any planning documents per se, but i do have a discord server thats just me and dozens of channels i use to jot down ideas, a bunch of index cards, and some notebooks!! i'm thinking of posting a picture of some of my notebooks tbh bc i love them, i love stationary <3

28 - ILLUSION - What is the best line of description in your WIP?

ohhhhhh man. i am a VERY imagery-focused and description-focused person, so its incredibly hard to pick the "best", but i can pull one i'm really proud of!!

All they knew was that the sun shone bright off the sea, glittering like beetle wings off an aristocratic Bosmeri gown, in its soft and elegant light. He longed to dive into the sea, deeper and deeper, gather shells in their arms and sort them at the beach, turn them over and over for signs of life, for molluscs and crabs, the kind of games he played on the rare visit to the Anvil beach with his family and their old friends, scent of salty, wet fur a brow-furrowing comfort for the Altmer. They could practically hear their old friends calling him down from the mountain, humming and hawing and beckoning the bard down to the shoreline.

30 - LOVE - What is your best writing advice?

i've accumulated mountains of various advice over the years, but one of my favorites - and something i tell myself frequently - is that everyone has an utterly wretched person inside them, and if you deny that that kind of awful, worst-of-humanity person has potential to exist in you and everyone you love, then you can never bring them to life on the page, yknow? i write a lot of fucked up people and if i denied that theres both good and bad in everyone (simplifying human nature a shitton) then how could i ever write the monster that's just another human? how can i show that every person we label as a monster is another human being just like us, who has favorite animals or colors or songs and has danced with friends as a kid and has aspirations for the future?

anyways thats my advice on writing bad people and some of my favorite writing advice, humanize your monsters. ive got a lot more practical advice but this is what came to me when i saw this question!

I just turned 28, and I can promise you that what others try to put on you doesn't matter. They're not living your life for you. Being silly and doing what you want is literally the spice of life. Sometimes, we mess up, but that's okay. It's just a new puzzle to solve. Things always get better.

If you have the chance to do something, go for it. Especially life events. Don't let stupid "adult responsibilities" trick you into thinking they're more important. Some things only happen once.

hi glitter this made me nearly cry a little bit

thank you for the kind words, and i can tell you that if it gave me that reaction, it must give the same reaction to many others. with that being said, don't forget you get to be a kid too. i think a lot of people get all in the head about being in their late twenties or thirties and feel like they suddenly can't have fun. that's not true at all-- you still get to be dumb and silly and enjoy your favorite shows and even go to cons-- you get to make fanart and scroll through fics and pages and pages of content because it makes you happy. you get to learn new languages and experience new things, even if you're not in your teens, yk?

i know I'm nineteen, but part of the reason i have Reaper as a thirty-three-year-old instead of younger is to show that you can still be learning and growing even past your teen years. that it's okay if things haven't happened yet, that there is a beautiful, bright future out there waiting for you. i wanted to illustrate that life isn't just one flat track after you turn twenty-one or twenty-five or thirty or whatever-- life has a lot to offer and it wants to give you plenty of good things, you just gotta wait. they'll be there.

i wanted to thank you once more for the profound, kind words, again. I'm taking them to heart and i hope you have a wonderful night, glitter! :)
