Congrats to the ultimate winner of the Hot & Vintage Movie Men Tournament, Mr. Toshiro Mifune! May he live happily and well where the sun always shines, enjoying the glories of a battle hard fought.
Tumblr media
A loving farewell to all of our previous contestants, who are now banished to the shadow realm and all its dark joys and whispered horrors—I hear there's a picnic on the village green today. If you want to remember the fallen heroes, you can find them all beneath the cut.
What happens next? I'll be taking a break of two weeks to rest from this and prep for the Hot & Vintage Ladies Tournament. I'll still be around but only minimally, posting a few last odes to the hot men before transitioning into a little early ladies content, just like I did with this last tournament. The submission form for the Hot & Vintage Ladies tournament will remain up for one more week (closing February 21st), so get your submissions in for that asap! Once the form closes, there will be one more week of break. The first round of the Hot & Vintage Ladies Tournament will be posted on February 29th, as Leap Year Day seems like a fitting allusion to leaping into these ladies' arms.
Thanks for being here! Enjoy the two weeks off, and send me some great propaganda.

8 Legendary Old Hollywood Redhead Actresses
Tumblr media
I love Old Hollywood movies and television shows. There is a class, elegance, a distinct type of storytelling that is usually not seen in today’s movies. While most of the iconic actresses from the era were blonde or brunette, there were a few redheads who stood out
Maureen O’Hara
Tumblr media
The late Maureen O’Hara was the physical embodiment of the redhead. Irish, feisty, intelligent and with a very sharp tongue, she was one of the few actresses of the era to successfully break into the boys club action/adventure genre. She held her own on and off the screen with co-stars John Wayne, Tyrone Powers and Anthony Quinn in several movies. She also helped future generations of female performers by stretching the boundaries of what an actress can do on screen.
2. Deborah Kerr
Tumblr media
At first glance, one might think that Scottish born Deborah Kerr was the proper British lady. But underneath that mask was a capable actress who played a variety of roles. Her most famous roles are An Affair To Remember (opposite co-star Cary Grant) and From Here To Eternity (opposite Burt Lancaster, where she chopped her hair off, went blonde and spoke with an American accent).
3. Ann-Margret Olsson
Tumblr media
To the red-blooded American male in the 1960’s, Ann-Margret was the embodiment of the era. The Swedish born performer is mostly remembered for playing opposite Elvis Presley in several films and the average teenage girl who meets the ultimate teen idol in Bye Bye Birdie. She also has the distinction of being named as the 10 th sexist stars in film history in 1995.
4. Myrna Loy
Tumblr media
Montana born and raised, Myrna started her career just as Hollywood was transitioning from silent films to talkies. While her initial roles were those of the femme fatale, in the 1930’s she became famous for playing opposite William Powell in the Thin Man movie series as Nora Charles. During the mid-1930s, Loy was so popular that she was named Queen Of The Movies in 1936.
5. Carol Burnett
Tumblr media
For many female performers and comedians, Carol Burnett is an icon. Her major breakout role was the in 1959 in Once Upon A Mattress. Between 1967 and 1978, her comedy show, The Carol Burnett Show was one of the most popular shows on the air. In an era when female performers were relegated to supporting roles in other comedy/variety programs, Carol Burnett not only had her name on the title of the show, but she showed how funny women could be.
6. Rita Hayworth
Tumblr media
This well-known redhead started off as a dancer and later was noticed in a 1941 film starring James Cagney, The Strawberry Blonde. She soon became the ‘pin-up girl’ for servicemen during the war and became extremely popular after the 1946 film, Gilda. Her character, opposite Glenn Fora, was seductive and glamorous.
7. Susan Hayward
Tumblr media
Born in Brooklyn, this iconic redhead scored the first of five Academy Award nominations for Best Actress in Smash-Up, the Story of a Woman, in 1947. She finally won an Academy Award for Best Actress in I Want to Live i n 1958, portraying a death row inmate, Barbara Graham.
8. Lucille Ball aka Lucy Ball
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball is the definition of a classic redhead. While she may not be a natural born redhead (she was naturally blonde!), she had the fiery personality and wit to rock her red hair — and I am proud to call her a redhead. I Love Lucy paved the way for many women comedians, both on and off the screen. She proved women were just as capable behind the camera (as she was responsible for creating the show), as they were in front of the camera.

but yeah sam's bone structure is wild
I feel this way too, his face is so striking to me beyond just the standard "handsome man with cheekbones" thing, and I'm trying to articulate why, so I'm curious if you could say why his bone structure is wild to you? If that's not a strange thing to ask lol
I don't know if I have that many thoughts on it beyond the fact that he has a face I like looking at, haha, but I will say that I think he's got a pretty early-Golden Age Hollywood face in terms of his features, which is just not really a look that we see very much on screen anymore?
The sort of preferred appearance / beauty ideal for Western actors usually changes with shifts in cinema history and popularity of genre, and that sort of masculine, square-jawed, high cheekboned face shape with delicate, almost feminine, almost pretty features was just a lot more popular in the 1930s / pre-WWII cinema era (see also: Tyrone Power, Robert Montgomery, Robert Donat, Leslie Howard, etc.)
I do think there's a shift post-WWII, where you see more of the rise of gristly looking Men Who've Seen Things (i.e. Humphrey Bogart, William Holden, Glenn Ford, Cary Grant, etc.) which isn't to say there wasn't crossover - there was, a lot of those 30s film stars had very long careers - but Western masculinity looked very different pre-and-post WWII, and movie stars reflected that.
(It also reflects the rise, I think, of the American movie star, given most of those 1930s actors I listed above are English, and most of the ones I listed after WWII are American.)
So yeah, I think Sam just has a very 1930s movie star face - like, I actually think in terms of bone structure and features (if not in colouring) he looks a lot like a young Laurence Olivier:

ASK-A-THON!
Don't mind the title, I wanted something simple but neat. Anyways, what is the ask-a-thon? Simple!
Ask a question directed to a character and I'll answer as that character! This allows for all of you to understand my headcanons and hopefully I finally get an excuse to ramble with an actual audience.
SO WHAT CHARACTERS CAN YOU ASK?!
WII/MII GAMES

Any OCs (although I haven't really mentioned them)
OTHER QUESTIONS
I will accept questions for a small handful of other characters that aren't in big fandom lists, as follows:
SILVERee (Criminal Case)
Any of the Down To The Wire cast (Criminal Case)
Any of the Elders (Cookie Run: Kingdom)
Madeleine Cookie (Cookie Run: Kingdom)
Kain (Blustone)
Karl Steiner (Blustone)
Geranium (Blustone)
Kamishiro Rui (Project SEKAI)
The Koresawas (a set of PJSK OCs, family)
NOTE: I have done a LOT of general headcanon world building, so if a character's interpretation is confusing, bare in mind it's my own perception of said character. Plus, there are chunks of world building that me and my friends have developed together so I'm more used to that specific perception of certain characters and things.

im so sorry but do you recall who it was, the man with the femdom wife/partner etc. someone said like, "you cant forget the pictures where he looks best being topped by (womans name)" or something like that I swear it was submitted as propaganda but I can't find it 🙏
that was Glenn Ford being absolutely obliterated by Rita Hayworth in promotional stills for the movie Gilda. if you'd like to see further images of Rita Hayworth sexually dominating an innocent bystander, she is currently running away with the propaganda for Tyrone Power.

GOING TO SMALL’S FOR THE TENOR PLAYER
BEN WOLFE with NICOLE GLOVER, Brandon Goldberg, and Aaron Kimmel, 9 FEBRUARY 2024, 9 pm
DAVY MOONEY with JOHN ELLIS, Glenn Zaleski, Matt Clohessy, and Jimmy McBride, 7 FEBRUARY 2024, 7:30 pm
Despite having JOHN ELLIS on my list to keep an eye out for, I hadn’t seen him on a Small’s gig for months. He has a dry, spare tone and weaves thoughtful melodic solos. Whatever minimal insights the Coleman Hawkins/Lester Young dichotomy yields, sorting players into one camp or another doesn’t help one bit. Still, I came upon else as I was reappreciating the likes of Stan Getz, Warne Marsh, and Mark Turner, imagining that it was the muscular, bluesy players that I liked. Though not particularly bluesy, the NICOLE GLOVER I became a fan of was “a bad ass” in Nate Chinen’s estimations who would regularly pin my ears back in front of a trio, her big sound replacing the piano. I’ve seen her often enough over the past year when she stepped away from her regular late night slot at Small’s. Those gigs, including with her tasty trio of Tyrone Allen and Kayvon Gordon with whom she doesn’t have to roar, reveal an even subtler player who can let the music come to her. Further, free of being the leader, she can just play.
BEN WOLFE is a fellow Portland, Oregon, native who writes worthwhile tunes for a solid band to play. GLOVER though is the standout, particularly as her style deepens and breathes. She synced up with Wolfe’s bass and/or Brandon Goldberg’s piano figures or held notes or played the jaunty line on Unjust (while hinting at the Monk tune Evidence for which it was a contrafact making it a contra contrafact of Just Me, Just You, or swinging along before hitting a double time section without breaking a sweat. As at the last gig I saw her at, she took on Body and Soul in her newer lighter not Coleman Hawkins style.
Before I might have seen JOHN ELLIS at the other end of tenor spectrum from Glover, but now I’m not so sure. He was the point of interest, though his bandmates, reliable Small’s regulars, were stronger than Glover’s support overall. But, I’m afraid, DAVY MOONEY’s tunes were less substantial. They suggested the right things—samba, New Orleans strut, pop song, even Bach—but there was just less there. His guitar work, similarly, was out of Pat Matheny but was just lighter. Still Ellis was smart and gave the material a good run. Seeing him as leader with Glenn Zaleski, Matt Clohessy, and Jimmy McBride (worthwhile to see him without partner and Partner Miki Yamanaka to fix just how much he contributes) would be very promising.
