my thoughts: very well animated, it was very cool and entertaining, I was on the edge of my seat, YES Nebby is Ash's pokemon fr!! it was actually pretty emotional with that Pikachu scene, YES Ash won!! Cameos!! But it all didn't really last, because it did not feel very meaningful in the end once you factor in the rest of the series. Oh well, at least Leon was hot lmao
Pikachu scene was good. Like, honest good. I liked that. But somehow I grew numb to care about most cameos and actually felt bit of anger at how some of them never got proper returns, thou I get why on everyone but Kasumi's regard. Sigh. This series set the bar too high for me, I hate it :D
Eh, I guess me being a complete nervewreck during vs Gladion in Alola League and rooting real hard for Satoshi vs Kukui was the best feeling I could ever have for a battle. I really didn't like how similar vs Dande felt to vs Kukui either, lots of it felt like it was done because it was done in vs Kukui lol. Ugh.
I hate to sound like a downer so I'll try to not talk about it for the rest of the day. But keep sending asks if you guys want, I'll answer in due time if I have something to add.
EDIT: on animation, like ok, it was really nicely done, but somehow to me it mostly just felt pretty and not like, amazing? Idk why it felt so unexciting to look at for me :'D

I don’t think anyone expected Pikachu to be used against and succeed so well against a Ground-type specialist like Hapu. Especially when he was already defeated by her Goloog before she and Satoshi even formally met. I get the message behind it and what they wanted to convey. The episode was about not just Hapu’s inauguration as an Island Queen but subtly Satoshi and Pikachu’s bond in a more battle-related light. Hapu said she would be fighting with her partner Pokemon, Banbadoro. It would be very easy to counter with Mukuroh as Kaki already noted. Satoshi chose Pikachu because he’s putting full faith in his most precious partner Pokemon like how Hapu does throughout the battle with her own Pokemon. Satoshi has been a catalyst toward Hapu’s development throughout the Poni arc. and using Pikachu who she commented twice already as being a gutsy choice was the most fitting way to wrap this up. It wasn’t just a Pokemon vs. Pokemon battle. It was trainer / Pokemon vs. trainer / Pokemon.
Hapu was extremely impressed by the innovation Satoshi and Pikachu brought as a team to her battle, from using Electro Web to save Pikachu from a Z-Move KO, to the usage of the surrounding seawater and terrain for a makeshift Soak attack (which Satoshi was inspired by while ironically enough playing and enjoying time with Pikachu), to using Quick Attack to maneuver around the field. The inability to use Electric-type moves also added the tension of putting Pikachu in an unfavorable position right from the start while allowing Hapu the opportunity gain control of the affair rather quickly. The entire match would have been too easy with Mukuroh’s being able to easily avoid ground-based attacks, a type advantage and a wide array of attacks to take the horse down and Mukuroh has nothing to prove. Pikachu does. This fight allows Hapu to fully respect and understand Satoshi’s ways as a trainer. It was only fitting that Satoshi finish this trial with the very first Z-Move he had ever performed, GigaVolt Havoc alongside his starter and partner Pokemon.
The reward scene seals it, Satoshi allows Pikachu the agency of having a voice in what Z-Crystal he’ll be claiming from Hapu. He picks out the Steelium-Z, this means that Pikachu has a Z-Crystal for each of his moves. Electrium-Z, Satopika-Z, Normalium-Z and now the Steelium-Z and he was naturally able to play a role in the earning of each of these new crystals that function for his entire move set. The Poni arc. was about each of the classmates and their Pokemon working together through their struggles and developing in their own way. Kaki/Lizardon surpassing their former selves, Suiren/Ashimari evolving and gaining more resolve, Mamane/Denjimushi evolving and Mamane being brave, Mao finally confronting her deceased mother with Amajo, Lillie/Gladion working alongside their Pokemon and discussing their damaged family network and missing father, Hapu opening up, learning and fighting to protect her friends. Satoshi and Pikachu ending the arc. on such a strong victory and communicating their relationship in an honest way through their actions made this episode a perfect one for me.
The episode manages to convey itself well with both Hapu and Satoshi testing one another alongside their Pokemon. It does so without undermining Hapu’s own strength as a newly-appointed Island Queen too. It wasn’t just about the battle, it was about the storytelling behind and around and leading up to the battle through the arc. itself which gave the battle a good amount of weight and worth outside of just another generic throwaway fight. Look at the past episodes, we have “Lychee’s Grand Trial! The Hardest Pokemon Match!!” “Will the Z-Move Work! Challenge the Grand Trial!!” “Kuchanashi’s Grand Trial! Lugarugan Awakens!!” I understand now why this episode was called, “An Island Queen is Born! Satoshi’s Grand Trial!!” because it was a trial of not just Hapu seeing if Satoshi could overcome her but also Satoshi showing Hapu who he and Pikachu were.

Pokeani League Predictions
Since we got the OFFICIAL match ups, i’m gonna make my predictions and y’all should make y’alls guesses too
Round 2:
Ash vs Faba
Illma vs Guzma
Hau vs Oak
Mallow vs Lana
Sophocles vs Mina
Jessie vs James
Kiawe vs Acerola
Lillie vs Gladion
Some of them are kind of obvious due to number of pokemon they have or the set up, but that doesn’t stop them from being good matches, others we don’t know though.
the rest of this post, I’m gonna make prediction to match up based on my wins!
Round 3:
Ash vs Hau
Kiawe vs Lana
Jessie vs Guzma
Mina vs Gladion
This leaves us with Kiawe, one of Ash’s biggest rivals in the pokeschool, but he’s going to go up against Guzma. Gladion then goes against Ash.
Round 4:
Ash vs Gladion
Kiawe vs Guzma
This is only gonna add to the tension of Guzma’s win because because it’s going to probably be a single sweep knock out, adding to Satoshi’s resolve making the finale Guzma vs Ash

(Gary anon) Pretty much Gary [for Blue], Barry and Gladion are the main survivors. And even then, Gladion is really the only one who was treated the best during his series. Gary had to endure OS writing and Barry was outshine by Paul. (We can only hope T-tar wasn't here for just Articuno fodder) Heh, until Gary's story with Goh is finished [and there's no surprise 3v3/6v6 with them], that remains to be N/A. I have hope but of course, there's no promises. That's up
.
(Part 2) to the writers. (All those promos before his return talking about his and Ash's relationship, calling him his "biggest" rival [even Paul was referred to as "nemesis"], apparently still battling and training, didn't join the PWC cause it's "too crowded". Please don't let that be for naught) This sub-section of the fandom has always had in-fighting; though I think after DP and ESPECIALLY XY, it's harder NOT to be dragged into something. Sometimes I have to wonder
(Part 3) if Ash was ever retired, would that cause some of the wars to cease or make them 10 times worse. (It's why I wouldn't want any Ash ship being canon. Ship elitism ruins so much freedom and civility) His thing about teamwork has me curious, but at least his earlier words and actions in previous episodes is slowly being pieced together.
(Part 4) (Plus Quillon was implied to have similar problems too, which he learned and drilled that into Gary and Goh. I reckon will see a smile out of him soon) I guess we'll see some more G-max forms soon. (Though the leaks spoiled it for me, someone made a connection about most of Ash's Fire-types being abandoned and Gengar, and THAT could be what the title means) If "think about your partners' condition" is anything to go by, that should tell what to expect from Paul.
(Part 5) (I just need to know who's facing Ash and Iris or who's facing Leon to figure out my predictions. We also might see another fully-evolved starter from said leaked matchup) The hint is that it's one we haven't seen in Journeys yet. (In other news, Rica apparently sung the English Pokemon theme in a collab this week; you can still hear the "Satoshi" in her voice even there. xD)
Yeah. I hear the Kalos rivals (minus Calem) exist in XY, and though I have no idea how they were handled there except knowing Serena and Shauna get shipped a fair bit, they were handled so poorly in the games themselves it'd be hard to do worse.
Yeah, hopefully Tyranitar will get some redemption later! Either through Project Mew stuff or us getting that Ash vs Gary battle we've been hoping for.
I guess we'll see what happens, yeah. Here's hoping.
I had a feeling the conflict had gotten worse in recent years, even if shippers have always been at each other's throats (which is the case in most fandoms) and people have argued about if Ash is a good trainer and protagonist for a long time. It really does feel like there's been a gradual increase in conflict and tension that reached its absolute worst during Journeys, though I have to wonder if the pandemic had an impact on that, what with lockdown having people online more because nobody could go anywhere and a general rise in stress.
I feel like whether or not Ash hypothetically departing from the series would make some of the wars cease or make them worse would depend on the protagonist that took his place. If the next protagonist was say, Goh... it'd be divisive, to put it mildly.
Oh yes, ship elitism my beloathed. Watching hardcore PokeShippers and AmourShippers argue over which ship has more canon validation is exhausting. (I was always fond of the former, it was baby's first OTP, but I don't want any Ash ship to become canon ever and I don't care about my ships having any canon validation whatsoever.)
Yeah, it's interesting. Love what Project Mew is doing for the development of the characters involved.
Oh, more G-max forms? Interesting.
Oh, that makes sense, yeah!
Yeah, apparently he's gotten at least a little bit better if he's calling Pokemon "partners" and thinking about their conditions.
Yeah, I've been contemplating potential matchups (and I have ones I'd like to see in mind) but I'm mostly curious to see what happens!
Yeah! Hopefully Gary gets to gigantamax his Blastoise (or Hatterene since that's an option now) at some point, I still want to see that.
Awesome! Love that. Love that she did that, that's so cool.

Pokeani, Gladion edition!
In the city, the Skull grunts are up to NO GOOD. And here's Gladion and Umbreon - who they go confront.
Gladion seems unimpressed, but the Skulls send out their Pokemon anyway. Gladion responds with Lycanroc - okay his voice is a lot deeper than I expected.
Oh. RIP, Skull grunt Pokemon :') Umbreon didn't actually do anything, and he was battling with Lycanroc, so I guess Umbreon is more like a pet?
And he just continues on his way, observed by the Rockets (and their malasadas). I hear a mention of Kukui, I think? Meowth, don't mumble with your mouth full...
Opening!
Meanwhile, at the beach! Satoshi and team are training, Rowlet vs Rockruff. Aww, Rowlet got their claw stuck... takes a hard hit, then kicks back! Litten steps in, but Rockruff is still raring to go - and Rowlet falls asleep :') Next up is Rockruff vs Litten, and ayyy is that the Kalos battle music? Nice!
Scritchies for all!
Meanwhile in class, the Pokemon have formed a train :D The kids are eating lunch with their tables pushed around in a circle. Satoshi looks REALLY excited about something, and Rotom shows the two Lycanroc forms. Maybe Gladion is forming a reputation?
Oh, there's Gladion! Casually just battling a Blastoise like a boss. He's using a ROCK type. Pikachu spots the commotion, and Satoshi rushes to watch! Just in time for Blastoise to get its ass kicked, heh. Both Rockruff and Satoshi are starry-eyed!
And Satoshi just runs in to challenge him, only for a cry of, "Onii-sama!"
In comes Lillie! She's all smiles, showing Shiron off to Gladion. Gladion turns away, apologising, and leaving. Satoshi hurries over, talking his ear off, showing Gladion his Z-ring. Seems that's caught his attention - but no dice, he still walks away.
Lillie looks sad D:
Back at Lillie's place, and a close-up of the photo. They talk things over, Lillie still looking sad. Shiron senses this and jumps up on her lap.
Flashback! James remembers TINY GLADION finding a wounded Eevee. Goddamn I wish I knew what they were saying :(
Back at Kukui's, Satoshi has a Rowlet shirt too omg. Litten and Rockruff tousel and are generally overly excitable, Rockruff rubbing their rocks over everyone.
Sleepy Pokemon <3 Oh, a knock - and an Umbreon at the window! Pikachu tries to wake Satoshi, shocking him to wake him up, and the Umbreon delivers a note that Satoshi is REALLY EXCITED ABOUT!!
Ad break!
The Rockets are sleepy. Well, James and the Pokemon are - Jessie seems more alert. Walking along, they spot Gladion waiting at the beach, then pause to have a sparkly shoujo moment watching the sunrise. EVEN WOBUFFET'S EYES ARE SPARKLING.
Here's Satoshi! Sunrise battle on a secluded beach, huh? They send out their Pokemon - Pupper versus BIG Pupper.
Rockruff is TRYING REALLY HARD. Alas, Lycanroc is Very Large, and Determined Pupper is just getting beaten around - until the Rockets jump into the fray and grab Pikachu and Lycanroc!
Hey, no fair using an actual truck! Rockruff manages to latch on to the net - that is a determined pupper - while Umbreon and the boys race after them. Umbreon uses a move on the tires, and they're free!
Gladion wants to take care of this himself, it seems! He and Lycanroc pull off a massive CONTINENTAL CRUSH. They ded - or rather, in the arms of Bewear. Either way, they're gone!
Back on the beach, Satoshi and Gladion talk. Gladion turns to leave, only for Lillie to arrive. The boys shake hands, and Lycanroc pets Rockruff, and Gladion and his team walk off, just as a rather unimpressed Lillie to show up. Sorry, Lillie!
Next week: BASEBALL. And the most ridiculous art shift what even.

i really think satoshi might win the league this time
Hau vs Guzma Gladion vs Satoshi --> Guzma vs Satoshi --> Satoshi
0 notes
Text
Eeeeeeh I’ll have to wait for tomorrow when subtitles drop for SM134. The dialogue is so advanced, I have no idea what the most interesting bits are saying.
But damn, Guzma is an antagonist in a way that he’s not in the league to have fun, but he’s out there to destroy the competitors and..... I kinda got the vibe that he feels the need to prove himself the strongest, from this scene alone:
Like, a little after he’s got Ashirene beaten up real bad with constant poisonings and such, he looks at Kukui and I think he’s sort of asking him ‘did you see that, Kukui?‘. Like, he wants Kukui to acknowledge his strenght here. But then, Kukui’s action seems to throw him off.
Kukui first glances at Guzma, but then changes his view to Suiren instead, as if to ignore him. And the face Guzma has after this is like...
How should I read this face? It kinda looks like he didn’t expect that reaction from him as is in mild shock?
And when Ashirene gets up? Oh now I get it, Guzma thought he had KO’d Ashirene already, but Kukui knew it’s not over, and that’s why he’s in mild shock. He thought he had finished his student already. Ooooooh I like this!
He even kicks the ground the moment he realises he hasn’t KO’d Ashirene yet. Oh boi Guzma is so good in Pokeani! He even gives off this kind of face when Ashirene manages to nullify his Gusokumusha/Golisopod’s Pin Missile attack with Surf.
He didn’t expect that. :D He also kinda shows anger and impatience when the match isn’t over as fast as he thought it’d be, shouting at his Golisopod during some points of their match as well. Oh boi he got anger issues.
Also, his Golisopod is badass, cutting Ashirene’s signature Z-move in half.
With Liquidation move. Holy cow. And Suiren’s face tells it all, she wasn’t expecting that, and she was so shocked by it she didn’t have to command Ashirene at all.
She’s just standing there..... I was hoping for more, but at least she’s shown to be in a shock stance, and she does sound like it too.
What feels very unleague-like, is that Guzma is announced the winner of the round, but no one is cheering! The whole audience is silent. Then Skull Gang breaks the silence but you get my gist. This is why Guzma is a villain. He’s not there to have a good time. He’s there to make the league’s atmosphere the absolute worst. And if he won the league, that would mean the end of the Alola League. Forever. Because letting a un-sporty person win the league wouldn’t feel very sporty, now would it?
Y’know what intriques me about Suiren’s dialogue afterwards thou? She seems calm and all but.... she seems to also acknowledge that despite Guzma’s tactics being brute, cruel and ruthless, he’s not breaking any rules? Mao and Lilie seemed to accuse him of it but, Suiren and Kaki say otherwise? (I actually just got a confirm on this being the actual dialogue on twitter. Glad to have understood it.) Suiren also acknowledged Guzma as a stronger trainer than her, that’s... actually really mature of her. She’s fine with the loss, because she knows she did her best. Y’know... that’s actually what we should expect from her, since she is sorta similar to Satoshi in that regard. Seeing the actual loss scene again, she did show shock in losing the battle. And her voice said so as well. I think the main problem I had with her loss scene was that her face didn’t say it enough.
ANYWHO, some thoughts on their battle. I enjoyed it a ton, as I expected to. I was terrified, due to Golisopod’s gruesome tactics (and being a bugfobic so a bug-type doing something so gruesome just doesn’t help it lol), but I’m also real impressed with the level of strategies Guzma and Golisopod are using. It.... reminds me of both Satoshi and Shinji. Heh. Also impressed with the level of strats Suiren used with Ashirene.
So, what’s up next? Kaki vs Gladion, so the theme there is big brothers. Then Guzma vs Satoshi, theme revolving around the Alola League’s future. I have no doubt in my mind, that Satoshi will beat the crap out of him. Mao did tell Satoshi to revenge Suiren’s loss. :D

ROCKET GANG FORGOT THEY STAND FOR RIGHTEOUS EVIL I’M SO DYING AJGSAFJHGFJHGFHGSFGJH
So, rewatched the ep with subtitles now, great dialogue involved in the episode, I’m just too tired right now to speak more specifically about scenes. Maybe tomorrow I’ll make couple posts. Maybe.
I’m just super glad that Gladio’s shown not-unbeatable in a way that he actually lost Lugarugan to Kaki’s Bakugames. Althou, it was kind of unlucky event, since Bakugames just happened to learn Focus Blast on the spot. :D
By the way. Just to quickly mention. You guys know how each series has a rival with certain hiragana existing in the name? More specifically, シ (shi)?
Gladion can actually be counted as one, as he has ジ (zi) in his name ( which is fully written as グラジオ ), which is a variation on シ .
Definitely talked about it before, but I feel it’s relevant now because it’s a fair reason to believe Gladio won’t win against Satoshi since Satoshi always beats his シ (Shi) rivals in the league? Even the New Year special from this year acknowledged Gladio as the シ (Shi) rival lol. Just wanted to mention. After today, I’m a bit more comfortable with the idea of Gladio winning, but still not that into that idea, and I don’t believe in it (it’s totally fine if you guys are, Gladio’s a great character! It’s just how I feel...). Stupid of me to be on “Satoshi is gonna win the league” camp, but I just wanna believe in him when everything just... makes sense in that regard, y’know? lol.
Anywho. Today’s episode goes to top fav league episodes, will have to do a rewatch on the league once I get to that point to actually rank the right spot for it. But def one of my favs. Let’s see how the battle ends next week, and how Satoshi vs Guzma begins! So excited for that matchup~

Knowing that all of August’s Pokeani episodes have been revealed is somehow making me nervous, like... the spoilers for possible league outcomes are out there. And somehow I’ve managed to avoid them. But for how long? This is so nervebreaking lol
Just a reminder to not come on this post and tell me what the spoilers are. I do not want to know. But to throw out couple options that seem to be possible at this point, under the cut:
It would appear we have three options for league winners: Guzma, Gladion, and Satoshi.
It would seem logical to me, that Satoshi gets to battle against the two, and beat the two as well, as he hasn’t won against the two not even once right now. Losing to Guzma I would understand, as he is a formidable villain with great battling skills, but with all due honesty: If Satoshi were to lose to Gladion, a rival introduced as early as SM027, with Satoshi never winning a single battle against him (while there were only two finished battles between the two, that fact still remains), I..... I’m not sure I’d take it well. Simply because I don’t want Gladion to be reduced to a ‘rival-that-can-never-be-beaten-by-protagonist‘. Idk about you guys, but it’d reduce Gladion’s value as character for me, if he were to win the possible battle against Satoshi. As much as I like him. Everyone knows I do. If the battle between Satoshi and Gladion would never occur, and instead Gladion won it against Guzma, to throw a possible option, I... would be fine with it? Maybe? Except, they haven’t shown a personal beef between Gladion and Guzma, so from Pokeani’s PoV, it wouldn’t be as interesting, as it would be with the kind of relationship they had in the games.
But then comes the ultimate question of battling Royal Mask. I don’t see Gladion vs Royal Mask as anywhere near interesting as Guzma or Satoshi would be. They both have a connection to the said brawler. Gladion does not. Or at least hasn’t been shown to have. The moment Royal Mask was revealed to be the exhibition prize for the League winner, I only ever saw either Guzma or Satoshi winning, as only those two made sense to watch battling Royal Mask. But, if neither were to happen... I’m not sure. I’d probably feel very conflicted.
But then there’s the speech that Satoshi gave at the start of the league, declaring that he won’t lose to Guzma. It’s such a huge speech, and it’d certainly hurt Satoshi hard, were he to lose to him. But I do want to believe, that he will beat him, with glorious victory.
I’m already scared of what possible spoilers are out there, and whether my hopes and theories are already crushed. Part of me wants to ease the nervousness, but I also want to see this through with my own eyes. Without any spoilers.
#pokemon#pokeani#pokemon sumo#alola league arc#mythical arc#discussions#speculations#maaaybe slight spoilers in this post due to discussing recent league events so do avoid if you don't want to know any spoilers#but otherwise it's all speculations
