Just went through a few sentences with each disaster curse in the different dubs. The French voice actors don't fucking miss lol! The Italian ones are also really good!
-For Hanami:
I really like her French and Italian voice actors! French gives her a more soft spoken voice I feel like. The Italian one made Hanami go "teehee" at the end of the Juju Stroll for episode 18 and I was in love with that!
The German voice was really cute to me, but the filter on it was just a bit too much in all honesty. At least compared to the other dubs the scene I was using had the filter be too much.
Another part I was in love with was the Spanish Spain VA making Hanami's sigh at the burnt flower bed sound like a moan! I was loving it on that little bit!
-For Jogo:
I thought his German VA fit really well! Also really loved the sound of the Latin American voice actor too!
I didn't particularly care for the Spanish Spain voice because it sounded even older than the English voice, which while it does fit Jogo, I was so used to the Japanese voice that I just didn't care for hearing a more "old" voice for Jogo.
That being said, I think the Brazil voice actor creates a nice middle ground between the younger sounding Japanese and Italian voices with the older sounding English and Spanish Spain voices.
If I was introduced to Jogo's Italian voice first and not his Japanese voice, I would have no complaints at all. Also French Jogo gots some gremlin vibes to me for some reason lol.
Oooh, just saw there was a Russian VA (I think that is what русский means, Russian. Please correct me if I am wrong) for the second season! Will have to see if Hanami has a Russian VA, but for Jogo, I LOVE the voice however I personally don't feel it fits Jogo. Probably biased because of the Japanese voice. Great voice tho!
(Yup! Hanami does have a Russian VA and OMFG do I love her! Amazing voice right there!)
-For Dagon:
So I kinda thought Dagon had 2 VAs for each dub, but doing this confirmed it! At least some of the dubs have 2 VAs, I didn't actually check for each one, but considering the difference between Dagon's voices before and after, I'm pretty confident that they have 2 for each dub (and then it turns out one of them doesn't have 2 VAs and is just a pitch shift lol).
Anyway, gonna just go in order because I think I had something to say for each language for Dagon.
Love both of Dagon's Japanese voice actors so much! First is a pathetic wet baby that I adore and second is so deep and good to listen to! I think the transition between one and two was also really fucking well done! First one had a lot of good emotion for the pain of losing Hanami and begging for Mahito and Jogo to come.
Did not care for Dagon's first English voice actor. Also, there was no transition from voice one to voice two, so it like lost a lot of the emotion that the transitions really help with. It just stayed with the first voice which sounded kinda limited in emotion to me. Didn't like the second VA at first, but listening to them again for this, I actually think it's already starting to grow on me! (which is good because I am rewatching the whole series with a friend in English).
Okay! Yo! The German voice acting is on point for both voices! Fucking love the more "feminine" sounding first voice and then you just get fucking hit with that second voice! Now THAT is a voice that commands respect and is fit for a Lovecraftian horror inspired character! The transition of voices was also really good! Definitely my fave of any voice I have heard so far for any of the characters (I really fucking wish there were English subtitles for the other languages. I would love to rewatch the series AGAIN in German or French with English subtitles).
The transition between voices for the Latin Spanish voices was so quick that it barely even felt like a transition at all. I like the transitions better when they actually overlap more, so I was not a fan of this transition in particular. The first one did have a lot of emotion to it though, so I will give it that! I don't know how I feel about the second voice. It's really good, but very raspy. I kinda feel like it doesn't fit a sea creature/curse and would be better for a like desert creature/curse or something more dry and airy? I definitely like the voice, but kinda feel like it is not fitting for Dagon.
Now most of the first voices for Dagon are pretty standard. A lot of them a pretty similar to the Japanese one I would say, but the first Spain Spanish voice actor I just do not care for. Don't know why. It has good emotion and a GREAT transition between the two voices. Just don't care for it. The second voice acting is good though! Not my favorite, but still really good! No complaints for that one! I like it a lot still and wouldn't mind watching the show with Dagon's voice sounding like that!
Once again I am in love with the French voice acting! Putting their whole voi-ussies into their acting lol. Anyway, I LOVE this transition of voices! The first one sounds cute, but does this kinda hissing thing with their voice as the transition happens that I fucking love so much! And it's like, it feels like a singular voice changing instead of one voice transitioning into another. It sounds so good! Also really like the second French voice for Dagon. Definitely not on the same level as the German voice, but possibly the second or third favorite so far.
OMFG! The first Italian voice for Dagon is fucking adorable! I love! The transition however, is nonexistent lol! Like the other voices at least tried to do a transition, even though some of them like the Latin Spanish hardly had a transition at all, the Italian voice just went from sadly calling out Hanami's name in the first voice to immediately angrily screaming about Hanami's death in the second. No transition at all between sentences. HOWEVER! I really like the second voice a lot! Kinda a bit too much of a filter going on with it, similar to how I didn't care for the filter on Hanami's German voice.
I don't know what it is with the first Brazilian Portuguese voice, but it sounds... good but familiar? Like not the voice itself, but the WAY it speaks, kinda with a lisp or something. I don't know but I kinda like it for Dagon in that form. It also does the hiss thing similar to French voice/transition that I fucking adore! The transition itself was also good, but unlike the others that try to transition it into feeling like one voice, you can really tell it is two distinct voices in this dub, that being said, I do really like how it sounds transition-wise! The second voice itself though is absolutely on par with the German voice! That shit fucking slaps so good and honestly I think it might fit Dagon more than the German voice!
Another amazing second voice for Dagon with his Russian VA! Dagon gets all the good voices! The first one wasn't anything special to be honest, another one similar enough to the Japanese voice. Similar issue as with the Brazilian Portuguese transition though, where it creates two distinct voices instead of blending them together better. The emotion of the first going into the second was good though!
-For Mahito:
I didn't really do Mahito, well I did but didn't. I was using a Juju Stroll vid for Hanami's voice and Mahito was also there so I kinda half heartedly did one.
These were the quick notes I took while doing that: I don't think the German voice really fits Mahito and the Spain Spanish was really good but again, I didn't really think it fit Mahito's character for some reason. Now I am going to redo Mahito but with a different scene (actually using two scenes, Mahito coming off the train as well as him screaming back at Yuji).
I don't care for Mahito's English voice actor. I really don't. Like, it just feels too soft most of the time. I know thanks to the screaming scene that he can get rough, but damn do I just not really care for it because of how soft and kind he sounds. It's weird, but to me there is a difference between the playfulness of Mahito purposefully being silly, being calm, being kind, and then talking "normally." It's hard to explain, and maybe I need to just watch more of Mahito in English (which I am doing), but his normal voice is just always too calm and kind and feels like he is always trying to actively manipulate in a tricky way like he was talking to Junpei. I don't know if that made any sense but I just really don't care for Mahito's English voice (sucks that the only English VA out of the disasters I remotely like is Hanami's).
Love how the German voice actor says "Jogo~!" coming out of the train. It's really cute and fits Mahito's silly side of his personality, very sing-songy. Other than that, I don't have much feelings on it. Like I just rewatched my scenes multiple times over in German and... I don't know, I don't want to say it doesn't fit, because it can, the screaming scene with Mahito feels really good, but the casual talking to Jogo doesn't really feel great? I like the voice, but not for Mahito.
Okay! I like the Latin Spanish voice for Mahito! The way he says Jogo and Yuji's names are so fun! It has his fun personality in his voice but also some bite behind his words. Like he can be very fun and kind but at the same time rough and bitter.
Spain Spanish kinda makes Mahito sound like he has a lisp. Might just be the language, but I like it! Not much else to say, it's a good voice that I think fits Mahito from what I've quickly seen.
I like French Mahito a lot! Like the French VAs for the curses have been pretty good! So far probably right under the Japanese voice acting for me which I think is still my favorite at the moment.
Oh! I like the Italian voice actor too! It's kinda hard to really say which ones I like better because the ones I do like are all pretty similar (maybe that's a me problem being too attached to the Japanese VA probably?). It's really hard to explain what I like about the Italian voice acting but it's good! (Also like, why is the Italian dub so fucking loud compared to the others? I keep having to lower my computer whenever I listen to the Italian dub).
Hmmm. The Brazilian Portuguese dub is REALLY good! I didn't think I would like a deeper voiced Mahito. Honestly I'm a bit on the fence but I like it more than I hate it! It would take a bit of getting used to but I actually really like how Mahito sounds in this dub!
Russian one sounded pretty average. Nothing really stood out to me in the scenes I chose. Even the shouting scene felt average. Which honestly isn't bad considering how I fee with most of the English voice acting being more in the negative lol.
There was also a version of the screaming scene in Ukrainian and DAMN do I actually like Mahito's voice in that! Obviously I can't JUST rate Mahito's voice on that since it is a yelling scene and I don't have a Ukrainian version of his speaking voice available to me, but it is really good and has the kind of aggression I am looking for in that specific scene that a lot of the other dubs just don't have.
Anyway, it's hard to really rate Mahito's voice because I feel a lot of the dubs just didn't play around and experiment. Quite a few of them felt really similar to each other so they are all around the same. The only ones that really stood out to me are the English and Brazilian Portuguese ones since they just literally felt the most different.
-So yea! That is what I thought of the voice acting for each of the curses. Probably should have done the more in depth analysis for Hanami and Jogo, but I think I got my point across with those two (Dagon kinda needed the break down because of their two voices, and by that point I felt I couldn't leave Mahito out and so went the same vibe as Dagon's section).
Wish there were English subtitles for the other dubs. Wouldn't mind watching the show in German and French! Also the Italian dub seems like a neat one to try if I could!
