Character Birthday Masterlist

This is as many birthdays as I could find for all the games I have played and anime's I have watched. Trust me there are more characters but some have no birthday dates posted. I will update this list as I go but you can always find this on my pinned post to come back and check the birthday calendars for each. I did want to do a calendar itself for each month but when so many have the same birthdate I found this harder to do so chose to just do a master list instead.

“Hiiiii~!” Tae warbled cheerfully as she strolled casually into the Yorozuya only just seconds after she had knocked at the door. The three employees of the joint all greeted her with varying degrees of enthusiasm— her cute little brother acknowledged her happily, Kagura gave a muffled greeting through a mouthful of rice, and Gintoki just grunted and did not look away from his weather program. She had to suppose a grunt was better than nothing, considering how absorbed he always was in the daily report.

“What brings you here this morning, Big Sister?” Shinpachi inquired as she sat down at the table. Tae giggled as anticipation bubbled up inside of her. This visit wasn’t her average, everyday, just-happened-to-be-in-the-neighborhood house call. She grinned broadly as she produced a small camera from within the folds of her kimono.

“Look what I won in a work raffle! A Polaroid camera!”

“Whuzzat?” Kagura huffed as she swallowed a chunk of rice that would choke a normal person and leaned over the table to inspect the small device with curious eyes.

“It’s a camera that instantly prints a picture you take! Here, smile, Kagura,” Tae instructed as she put the camera up to her eye to focus. Kagura blinked before hurriedly striking a ridiculous pose, arms bent at odd angles and face twisted into a less-than-flattering expression. The flash burst as the shutter fluttered with Tae’s finger pressing down on the button. The camera whirred and spat out a black square rimmed with white, and Tae took the photograph to start shaking it so it would develop. After a few seconds of vigorous shaking, she held it out for Kagura to see; the alien’s eyebrows shot up to the roots of her hair as she was greeted with the crazy photo.

“Wow! That’s so amazing!” she laughed, snatching the photo up to run over to Gintoki and stick it in his face. “Look, Gin, it’s me!”

“Fascinating. Now move,” he grumped and fell onto his side so that he could once more behold the cute weathergirl chattering amiably on the television. Kagura pursed her lips and puffed out her cheeks in childish protest. Gin yelped as she kicked him hard in the shin, and as he curled up on the carpet whimpering and holding the potentially fractured bone, Kagura scampered innocently back over to the table to sit next to Tae.

“You should get pictures of everyone! We can put them all on a board in here!” the young girl suggested excitedly.

“What a wonderful idea! It will really liven up the place!” Tae agreed. There were worse ways to spend a day, after all. Tae smiled eagerly as she held the camera between her hands. She couldn’t wait to see what kind of memories the little camera would record. It’s really lucky that I won this little prize~ she thought as she snapped a rather candid photo of Shinpachi with half a fried egg hanging out of his mouth. Kagura snatched the photo up and started running in circles around the table while Shinpachi chased her, desperate to rip the damning picture in half. Tae turned to look at the white-haired man still lounging lazily in front of the television, occasionally eclipsed by the two running teenagers. A faint haze of pink appeared on her cheeks as she hugged the camera to her chest.

Maybe… I can keep one or two for myself, too?

After a day of hunting down literally everyone they knew, Tae and the two children were back at the table, pinning a collection of pictures to a large corkboard that they were going to hang in the main room. Tae had to say, she outdid herself with the menagerie. She had a nice shot of Sadaharu playing fetch with a frisbee, one of Otose smoking her pipe thoughtfully while admiring the sky, one of cute Tama sweeping contentedly, and one of Catherine flirting shamelessly with a man who looked not the least bit interested and daresay even a little frightened.

After that point, people had started crashing the party, and Tae had snapped random photos to just see and what she accomplished. The results had been fun; she had a shot of her crazy gorilla stalker Isao lying upside-down in a destroyed fruit stand where Tae had hurled him (that she was only keeping because Kagure found it hilarious) and one of Hijikata and Okita embroiled in a fistfight with Gin and Kagura. The princess Soyo had come to play with Kagura, and Tae had snapped a very cute shot of them having tea time. They had ventured down to Yoshiwara and got a photo of Hinowa, Seita, and Tsukuyo strolling through the lantern-lit streets. Tae had taken a photo with Kyuubei as well and thought it was so adorable how shy she looked. Somehow she had also managed to nab a photo of the strange long-haired patriot Katsura and his companion Elizabeth wearing mustache disguises (that were being wrenched off by a very angry Hijikata in the photo) and it was funny, so Tae kept it. She had one of Ayame the ninja, too— specifically, one of her hanging out of a window calling lewdly to Gin as he tried his best to speed-walk away. The next shot was of her jumping out of the window to fall right on top of him. Tae thought they were nice companion pieces.

Finally, the centerpiece was grumpy Gin lounging in front of his television poring over Ketsuono Ana. Tae giggled as she pinned it to the board; surely, there was nothing so unequivocally Gin than that photo. He was watching through lidded eyes as the excited trio hung up their finished product and stood back to admire it.

“Are you finally done? Does that mean you’re done dragging me all over town?” he whined as he picked at his nose with his pinky. So vulgar, she thought, but with an undeniable hint of fondness.

“Tae! Can we please keep the camera?” Kagura begged suddenly, tugging on her arm. “We want to add more photos, and we’ll have to have a camera to snag them, yes?”

Tae smiled wanly at the precious girl; the camera would be only a novel and temporarily amusement to Tae. She knew in her heart that the children would derive much more long-lasting and meaningful amusement from it, and it was no loss to her since she had gotten it for free. Still… Her eyes wavered as they settled on the bored-looking man. He had been very unexcited about posing for photos, so Tae really hadn’t gotten any good pictures of him. Tae flushed and looked down at her feet when his eyes suddenly flickered to meet hers. Was it creepy that she wanted a picture of him? Just one… Then she could relinquish the camera to Kagura with no regrets.

“Oi. Take your dog out before he pisses on my floor,” Gin barked to Kagura as Sadaharu whined miserably at the door. Kagura stuck her tongue out at the rude man but obediently jumped up to scamper over to open the door.

“Come, Shinpachi, let us take Sadaharu for a walk!”

“What? Oh, okay,” the spectacled boy shrugged and followed after her. The door clicked shut behind him.

Tae and Gin were now alone.

“What’s that look for?” The smirk on his face was positively devious. Could he know what she was thinking? “You want a picture of me all for yourself, is that it~?” Tae flinched at how easily he seemed to read her mind. She could only shuffle her feet and blush as he peeled himself up off the floor to scroll languidly over to her and take the camera in his hands to begin inspecting it critically. With how close he was standing to her, it was impossible not to notice how he towered over her in an effortlessly sexy manner… Tae’s cheeks turned dark red. Had she really just used “sexy” and “Gintoki” in the same thought process? Oh, yes, she had. She still was. It was all she could think about, even. “I really don’t get the big deal about this thing…”

“It doesn’t matter! I’m going to give it to Kagura!” Tae stammered as she reached for the camera. Gin clicked his tongue and held it high above her head, out of reach. “Gin! Give it here! You don’t care, so why are you teasing me?” she whined pitifully as she stood on her tip-toes to try and reach the camera. Her fingertips could only graze the underside of its plastic surface. Her chest kept bumping into his as she wobbled in front of him, and he tilted his head back as the crown of his head tickled his chin. He was smirking widely, obviously very entertained by her fruitless efforts. “You meanie!” she said and puffed her cheeks at him angrily.

“Mean? I was going to take a photo with you, Tae; I don’t think that’s mean at all.”

Tae ought to be alarmed by the edge to his voice, she really ought to, but that was secondary to the effect his words were having on her brain right then. She fell back onto the flats of her feet as she stared owlishly up at him.

“Really? I thought you weren’t interested.”

“Just shut up and stand still,” he purred as he slowly slipped an arm around her shoulders, letting it hang there loosely as he adjusted so he was standing next to her. His other arm was raised to position the camera down towards them. Tae could only stare at the black lens, shocked at how easy it had been for Gintoki to agree.

Of course, things were never that simple with him.

She gasped loudly as his hand suddenly snapped up to grab her chin and turn her face. Her vision was a blur of his white hair and silver eyes and devilish grin and the flash of the shutter. He had concluded the act far before her mind registered the softness of his lips against hers; by the time the sensation had reached her nerves, he had already pulled back and dropped the camera in her hands to go flop down in front the television. She looked blankly down at the developing photograph, mind whirling in a storm of confusion. Surely she had just imagined that, right? There was no way Gin would kiss her…

The image slowly came to life in the black film. Sure enough, there it was, indisputable evidence of their lip-locking. Gintoki was smugly side-eyeing the camera as he smirked against Tae’s smushed lips, while her eyes were wide and locked on his face. She blinked once, twice, a third time for good measure to see if the image distorted at all. Nope. There it still was, clear as day.

“Ehhhhhhhhh?!” she screeched in a conglomeration of alarm, shock, anger, and stupid glee. “Gintoki! You can’t just do stuff like that!”

“What? Did you not like it?”

“Th-that’s beside the point.”

“So you did like it.”

“I-I didn’t say that!”

“Oh? Want me to try again?”

“Gintoki!” His shoulders shook in a baleful laugh before he tossed a smile at her. That smile made her heart stop. It wasn’t a smile of mischievousness or teasing, but genuine affection.

“Be sure to keep that a secret from Shinpachi. He won’t like it.” Tae stiffened before stuffing the photo into one of the pockets sewn into the inside of her kimono. “And Tae?”

“Y-yes?”

“Drop by more often. I get tired of Shinpachi griping about how he doesn’t get to see you with how much you work.” She blinked as he turned back to the television, grabbing the remote to flip idly through the channels. It took a moment for the request to register, and when it did, her eyes softened as she smiled lovingly. What a Gintoki way of saying things. Never could be to the point, could he?

“Hehe… Sure thing.”

She left the camera on the table for Kagura and left. As she walked home, she pulled out the photo, holding it in both hands as she walked home. Her eyes crinkled up with happiness as she admired it, her new treasure.

“Sure thing…”

Evolution of Otae vs. Gintoki x Sacchan part one

gintama has 704 chapters and one of the most memorable running gags is sacchan riling otae up over ginsacchan endgame. This is a 3 part post where I trace an aspect of otae and sarutobi’s friendship that’s both hilarious and fascinating to me.

L64 Otose Snack Bar

First meeting of Otae and Sarutobi. Otae says that Sacchan’s application/omiai picture is  cute. Otae, Sacchan and Catherine are all competing to be the replacement of Kagura, the show’s heroine. Sarutobi is already in love with Gintoki at this point and doesn’t suspect Otae yet of anything. Because GIntoki and Shinpachi couldn’t pick between them, both the ladies knock them out and proceed to walk into the moonlight.

It‘s the start of an interesting friendship.

L77 Infant Strife

Sarutobi immediately assumes that the child  between Gintoki and Otae was their offspring. She immediately attacks Otae and calls her “not a woman anymore but a mother.” Otae retaliates by saying that Sacchan is a “one woman opera a B-movie script and that the child isn’t hers.” Otae exclaims that “no one would want to have a baby with that Loser (Gintoki)” Otae tries to get Gintoki to clear things up but finds him trying to escape. Otae throws him into a river and calls him the kid “his bastard child” and gintoki “a pig”. She also tacks on that she will stop Shinpachi from working with Gintoki (for being a dishonorable guy).

Otae invites Sarutobi to just hang out with her instead. Also I think she clear things up that the kid is not hers.

I think Sarutobi’s thought process was

“Otae wants to be the show’s heroine (from L64) --> Gin-san is bringing a kid that looks exactly like him and Otae is beside him --> Otae is also my competition for heroine  --> heroine can also mean Gin-san’s woman --> Otae befriended me before but she actually wants Gin-san for herself --> to hell with you Otae, you conniving btch”

it’s a neat tie in to their last encounter XD

L98 Post-Benizakura Recuperation

Sarutobi stumbles upon one of the traps Otae set aside for Kondou. Sacchan thinks the traps are for her specifically and that Otae made them so that she will not bother GinTae.

Yamazaki then confirms to Kondou and Sacchan that Gintoki is temporarily staying in the Kodoukan dojo to heal from his injuries. Kondou complains that he can’t allow GinTae to live in one roof. Sarutobi encourages Kondou not to give up on stalking and says that even if she was happy for Gin-san fathering a kid (L77), she wont stop pursuing Gin-san either (coz she knows that otae wasnt the mom).

note: accdg to Word of God, Sarutobi starts to spy on the kodoukan dojo and otae after this

L103 Snowball fight

Sarutobi shows off her massive Gintoki snowman to Yorozuya. Gintoki is impressed by it. She demonstrates how it works by laying on the outstretched hands of the snowman. Because of her weight the arms break off causing Sachhan and her glasses fall. Blind as bat without glasses!Sacchan picks the broken arms and thrusts them accidentally at Otae who just arrived at the scene. The hands of the Gintoki snowman arms land on her chest. Otae gets pissed and her fist find Gintoki to send him flying.

Convenient for Otae to show up while Gin x Sacchan was happening lmao.

L128 Hostess Club / Shogun Introduction

Sarutobi picks the shogun stick of the shogun’s game. She immediately requests Gin-san to have sex with her. Otae smacks Sacchan with her foot because the latter was not playing by the rules.

note: in shogun/kings game you’re supposed to say “number xxx i order you to [smth smth]”, the fun in the game is that you dont know who’s holding which number. the shogun just kept getting the numbers that were ordered to do the tasks.

L138 Group Date

Kondou gets kicked by Otae to the ceiling after he showed up and objected to Gintoki’s planned Goukon. Sarutobi was lurking in the space between ceiling and roof, spying on Otae (or maybe following Shinpachi, idk)

This is the first  instance we see Sarutobi stalking/spying on Otae. Because both stalkers were already aware of the Goukon, they invite themselves to the party. Gintoki kicks Kondou because he didnt want to include the stalkers in the first place.

L156 Weight Loss Arc

Sarutobi pops out of Otae’s ceiling when she overhears Kagura and Otae’s conversation. She insinuates that GIn-san’s back will break if he carries Kagura or Otae like a princess (most likely this jibe was directed at Otae again). Sacchan falls from the ceiling too because she’s overweight.

Otae: hey don’t destroy my house

--> it’s  like the house is punishing sacchan for assuming about gintae again.

at the fasting dojo otae rags on sacchan to leave the dojo if she’s just gonna keep eating. Sarutobi responds by telling Otae that unlike Otae, she isn’t actually fat and in fact she’s carrying Gintoki’s baby. Otae responds by kicking her in the stomach “Congratulations you just give birth to puke.”

In infant strife arc, we remember that Sarutobi mocked Otae for  “not being a woman anymore and downgrading into a mother, taking herself out of the competition.” While in Weight Loss Arc she proudly she says she’s pregnant and soon to be mother of Gintoki’s child lololol

OVERALL NOTES:

there’s a continuous back and forth of riling up between the two. It usually starts with Sarutobi insulting Otae and telling her that she’ll end up with Gintoki. Otae never responds kindly to insults and people calling her names so she retaliates at Sarutobi with violence.

So, from the 4 people who i remember which assumed that Gin and Tae were in a relationship, or one of them have feelings for each other.

Obi-Wan and Bimbokousai: both know Tae since from childhood, and were close to her

Otose: literally Gintoki mother figure, she knows him from a time ago (at least is what it seems from the flashbacks).

Sacchan: compared to other characters above, she isn't that close to them, but she knows them enough, to understand that they have a strong bond this is why Tae is a threat.

The star who shines brighter than the moon. (Gin x Fem!Reader)

Warning: SFW but angsty

“Aren’t you that girl that goes around with Yorozuya Gin?” The lady at the counter said, as she handed you two bags of takeout parfait.

Nodding at her, you couldn’t help but smile. That was you, the one who went around with Gintoki, the one who got to date the silver haired samurai himself.

“Tsukuyo, was it?”

Immediately your smile turned into a frown. That was the disadvantage of dating the protagonist; you had to compete against every single female character of the show. Sometimes it was Otae, other times it was Sacchan, but no matter what, the bane of your existence remained to be no other than Tsukuyo herself. She who was so skilled, so strong, so… beautiful, especially when compared to someone like you. It wasn’t that you lacked in that many aspect but, when compared to Tsukuyo, there was no way you could compete. She was perfect in every single way, the perfect warrior, the perfect woman, the perfect match to Gintoki.

You always tried your best not to let such thoughts get to you, yet, whenever someone mentioned the blonde, you couldn’t help but feel rather agitated. She had done nothing to wrong you, but even so, in your eyes she remained the biggest threat. It didn’t matter that Gintoki had chosen you, as long as she was in the picture, you would always fret.

“I’m sorry. You have the wrong person.”

Before the employer at the candy shop could inquire any further, you left the store at once, your fists clenching around the handles of the two bags.

Tsukuyo this, Tsukuyo that, why did it always have to be her? Why did everyone have to compare you this much to her, why did you have to be so inadequate?

Get your shit together, Y/N. It’s fine, everything is fine, don’t let this random employee get to your head. You are going to go to his place and carry on with your day as planned. You are going to give him this parfait that you bought specially for him and he is going to be overjoyed. It’s going to be a great night, nothing will ruin it.

You kept giving yourself pep talks until you finally reached Yorozuya. By the time you found yourself standing outside the building, a saturated sunset was all that was left pouring out of the sky. Where the sun once stood, the faint shadow of a moon came to be, a moon you detested to look at.

Shaking your head dismissively, you climbed the stairs up. “Gin? Gintoki? Are you in there?’’ You asked before knocking on the door.

No answer.

“Gin? It’s me, open up!” You said in a louder voice, knocking once again.

No answer.

Was he not home? That’s weird, usually he is here at this time of the day.

As you were about to walk away, the sound of laughter caught your attention. A man and at least three women, you noted. You took a step forward, placing your ear against the door, yet once again, you were unable to hear a thing. The sound must be coming from Otose’s. Without wasting time, you went downstairs at once. There it was again, that laughing sound, yet this time, you could hear some voices accompanying too.

“Gintoki, you shouldn’t do such things. What will Y/N say?” A woman, most likely Otose, said.

“Huh? But Tsukuyo has the perfect- Ouch! What was that for?”

“Watch your hands, Gintoki, or else-” You felt your heart dropping within your chest. That was her voice, wasn’t it? They were talking about her, right? And where did Gintoki put his hands onto?

“Tsukki, Gin-chan is right! You are… the one… perfect… Y/N.” Kagura’s voice kept getting cut by the voices of Gintoki and Tsukuyo, although now you were unable to understand a thing. Tears begun to cloud your eyes and before you knew it, you let the two bags drop by your side with a loud thump. It was only then that you noticed how the door was kept ajar and the sound you made was enough to get them all to turn towards you.

“Y/N? What are you doing here?” Gintoki asked you, moving towards the door.

Although you had no idea what they were talking about, the mere thought of Tsukuyo being there and Gintoki doing something to her, was enough to set you off. What was the meaning of this? Had your worst fears really come true?

Gintoki pushed the door open, waving his hand at you, yet before he could say a thing, you turned the other way. God, you must have looked so pathetic. Tears were streaming down your face, and for what? For something you had known all along? You heard them say it, Tsukuyo was perfect. Even if you had no idea what had been going on, there was no doubt that you had heard that one part clearly. She was perfect and you weren’t, you were just mediocre.

“Oi, Y/N, what’s the matter-” Not letting him finish his sentence, you ran off with all your might, his voice calling you out in the far distance as you bumped into passerby after passerby. You had to get out of there, he must never see your crying face again.

Losing yourself into the streets of Kabukicho, you finally slowed down once you made sure the silver haired man -or anyone of his acquaintances, for that matter- wasn’t around. By the time you did so, you were out of breath, your lungs desperately aching for some air. Yet each time you tried to breathe, a new sob got caught in your throat, choking you over and over again until you couldn’t help but burst into crying in the middle of the street.

At the end of the day, it wasn’t about Tsukuyo herself. You knew that very well. If you were a bit stronger, a bit prettier, a bit smarter, a bit more like her, you wouldn’t be struggling so much right now. If you could be as perfect as she was, you wouldn’t have to be second guessing yourself this much, yet even so, this had nothing to do with her. You were as pathetic and worthless as it gets, an insecure mess and whiny mess whose only real attribute was being the girl Gintoki went around with, a girl whose name wasn’t even worth remembering.

This wasn’t even the first time you had found yourself crying over such a thing. In fact, it had turn into a frequent occurrence for you to be weeping over the blonde and her relationship to your boyfriend. Each time you did, Gintoki would scold you, reminding you that there was nothing to be jealous of. No matter how childish and indifferent Gintoki may seem, he had always been there for you whenever you cried, no matter how significant or insignificant the reason was. But… someone like Tsukuyo would never cry, right? Someone like her had no issues, she had no reason to be sad in the first place. Not when everyone worshiped her, not when everyone looked up to her.

Tsukuyo… what a fitting name, you thought to yourself once again, as you peered at the night sky. The moon was shining ever so brightly, clouds not being enough to keep its beauty hidden for too long. Yet whenever those very clouds moved before a star, they made it vanish into oblivion. That was the fate of those who stood by the moon. No matter how bright, no matter how close, they could never attract people’s attention the way the moon did. The moon was so bright, so pretty, so… perfect. No star could ever compete and certainly no star whose light was as dim as yours.

It was both hopeless and pointless. There wasn’t even a real competition, the difference and the gap between you would never be minimized. Even if for a little while you could stand on your own, there was no way for you to keep doing so. How much more could you afford to cry before he left you? How many more tears could you afford to shed before he realized that you had no real value, that he was sick of you, that he didn’t want you anymore?

It really was pointless, you thought after wiping the final batch of tears off your cheeks. There was nothing more for you to do and for once, you were tired of pretending as if everything was fine. Standing here, crying in the middle of nowhere, would do you no good.

Your feet begun to move on their own, aimlessly searching for a new destination. It felt as if there was nowhere left for you to go, and before you knew it you were once again standing outside of Yorozuya. This time, it was quiet. The lights were out and no one seemed to be in the snack bar. You had completely lost track of time, yet there was no denying, it was too late.

“Thought you’d find your way back.”

“Gin-Gintoki?” Your voice cracked as you spoke his name, an involuntarily gasp escaping your lips. The man was standing right in front of you, a rather serious look on his face while he studied your expression.

“You are such a handful as always. Were you crying again?” He asked as he leaned closer, lowering his eyes to yours.

“No,” you lied. A blatant and shameless lie. Your eyes must have been red from all the crying, there was no way he couldn’t see that. Even if there was a chance he couldn’t do so, because of how dark it was, he still knew you too well to be able to tell.

“Are all women this bothersome?” I bet Tsukuyo isn’t, you wanted to tell him, yet the second you thought of her name, tears begun to poke your eyes again. “Why did you run off like that? And what is it with this reaction?”

“I didn’t feel so well.”

“Didn’t seem like it when you went all Whis on me.” Gin exclaimed with a scoff, not buying into your lie in the slightest.

“I…” In reality, you were unsure of what to say. You weren’t even planning on coming back here, hadn’t even bothered preparing a plausible story. Everything you uttered was lies an excuses and you both knew that.

“I heard you.” You spoke in a barely audible voice, forcing Gin to tilt his ear closer to you. “When… When I came earlier, I heard everything.”

“Huh? You did?” He asked, furrowing his eyebrows in a puzzled expression. " Then why are you so upset?”

“Because, I can’t do this anymore, Gintoki!” A hitched sob forced your words to an halt. The longer you stood in front of him, the weaker you felt.

“I just can’t. How much longer do I have to turn a blind eye? How much longer do I need to stand there and watch her take the thing that matters the most to me away? I’m tired of being in her shadow, I’m tired of not being good enough. I’m sick of it. I’m sick of being the one who has to look up to this beautiful and unobtainable moonlight.”

Your voice kept breaking as you spoke. However, for the first time in a while, you felt relief washing over you. All those things that had been torturing you were now out in the open. There was no reason for you to keep playing charades with him, and even if ended tonight, then at least you had done your best. Or so you thought.

For a bit, the two of you stood there in near silence, your sobs being the one thing to interrupt it. Gintoki kept staring at you and you kept staring at the floor, unsure of what you were supposed to do now. He must have been upset, right? He must have been furious for sure. You had caused a scene in the middle of the street, a scene that the two of you had acted out before. Yet, rather than saying a thing, Gintoki sighed out loud,shaking his head. Catching a glimpse of him as he reached his hand inside his kimono, you looked up at him in hesitation.

“I didn’t want to give this to you like this but… here.” He said, taking your hand into his before placing a rectangular silver box.

Your gaze flickered between the box and him, unable to tell what this was all about. It appeared to be a jewelry box of some sorts, considering how you could hear a small chime from within. Reluctantly, you moved the box closer to your face. Opening its contents at once, you couldn’t help but gasp in awe. Inside was a silver pendant, a singular star hanging from its chain.

“This is what we were doing when you were eavesdropping. I had her try it on to see how it fits before I gave it to you. ” You tried to open your mouth, yet he stopped you, shaking his hand dismissively.

“Y/N, do you know the name of this star?” -he paused to point at a star, not awaiting an answer before continuing- “I don’t remember either. But, this star, no matter how small it may seem to you, is enough to guide people. Even when its light is no brighter than the moon, it’s enough to help you find your way in life. The moon may be beautiful but if it wasn’t for this one star, so many people would have lost their way. Instead of looking up at the moon, look down below. Look at all the people who depend on you, look at me. You were the one to lead me back to you. Even under the light of the moon, I still choose to follow you, don’t I?”

His words were enough to dissolve all the thoughts in your brain. All those rumblings, all those voices, all of your insecurities ceased, even for a moment. Even if they managed to crawl back up the next day, for now, it didn’t matter. Somehow, you knew that it was okay. As long as he was there, it’d be okay, you’d be okay.

Letting out a rather drawn out sigh, you fell onto his chest, staining his kimono with more tears.

“Oi, why are you crying again? If someone sees her, they’ll think I did this.” Gintoki joked. Still, despite his words, you felt a hand hitching up your back, pressing your head harder against him. “Y/N… stop with all that crap. Stop wishing to become something you could never be, you are just perfect on your own.” He went on, rubbing circles across your hair reassuringly.

You stayed like that for a while, basking in the feeling of his warm embrace until you felt like you could face him. The tears on your face had dried and you were even able to force a smile as you looked up at him, one that he returned without hesitating. Truth was, you hadn’t been seeing each other for that long for you to say it out loud, but in that moment, even when everything else was uncertain, there was one thing you were certain of. You loved him. Inadequate or not, imperfect or not, perhaps it didn’t matter. If he was the one to pick up your pieces, nothing else mattered.

“Are you coming in now or not? I don’t think this parfait will last much longer.” He said, shaking before you a bag that you hadn’t noticed him holding before. Squinting your eyes, you took a better look at it. That was the bag you had brought to him earlier!

“You kept it?”

“Parfait doesn’t taste as good when you eat it by yourself.” The fact that he’d actually picked it up and held onto it for the two of you to share it, was enough to make you swoon. Unable to hide your own smile, you were about to hug him again, when he spoke again. “I just hope it’s not salty with your tears. You didn’t cry over it, right? You wouldn’t spoil something so precious, right?”

Rolling your eyes at his comment, you punched his shoulder playfully, following him back to Yorozuya. Before you walked back in, you took one final look at the night sky, this time with a smile on your face. The stars were so beautiful tonight.

Gintoki, Hijikata, Dozaemon and Tae

One of the things that struck me in Soul Switch Arc was how Gintoki dropped the tsukkomi/straight man act while watching Dozaemon and Otae interact.

Hijikata and Gintoki had both been serving tsukkomi after tsukkomi while watching the scene unfold.

Hijikata: "WATCH OUT GET AWAY FROM THAT!!

Gintoki: "SHE-SHE'S KEEPING HIM AS A PET?! A MONSTER IS RAISING A MONSTER!!

The last thing Gintoki says is below in regular text. (Hijikata is the one talking in italicized bold lettering).

after this Dozaemon starts speaking and Gintoki grows quiet as hell, leaving Hijikata to do all the straight man acts by himself.

When Otae starts talking and the mood becomes serious, Hijikata shuts up and listens. Gintoki is still quiet as fck, almost like he's watching himself through Dozaemon. It is especially more poignant when Dozaemon does this large intake of breath as the cat was so moved by Otae's kindness.

and then Hijikata comes back with the tsukkomi routine and likens the scene to watching a romantic moment in an old movie.

the icing on the cake is when Hijikata was like

"THEY'RE ACTUALLY DEVELOPING SOME NICE FEELING BONDS!! WHAT THE HELL IS THAT WOMAN DOING?!! WHAT IS YOUR EGO DOING!! WAIT WHY THE TF ARE YOU CRYING?!!!"

It took Gintoki fifteen panels just to speak up again! It wasn't a straight man quip but an actual emotional reaction to watching his own self being cared for! "I'M SO HAPPY FOR YOU MY OTHER SELF."

Hijikata's like "WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO NOW?! HOW ARE WE GONNA GET OUR SOULS BACK?!!"

Hijikata couldn't believe what he was seeing from Gintoki. He probably didn't expect Gintoki to accept what was happening just like that.

The cherry on top of the icing on the cake was when Gintoki said: "Do something about it then! You gotta find a way to persuade her to give up." It was like Gintoki couldn't find it in himself to take away the happiness the other half of his soul was experiencing so he left the responsibility/job to Hijikata. T.T

Gintoki masked it with "It'd be weird if Hijikata's face will suddenly approach her out of nowhere so it has to be Gin-san ffs...just act all Gin-san-y as best as you can."

All in all this was such a good Gintoki x Tae, Hijikata x Gintoki moment. It showed a lot about Gintoki's personality and feelings as well. Throughout the series he has said that all he wants is a family, a reason to live, people he can carry as burden and who'll accept him and watch his back too. Dude just wanted to belong somewhere.

Even in cat form, Otae welcomed his soul just like always and he appreciated that a lot. It's even more intense knowing that the part of the soul Otae welcomed into her life was the bad/sad/negative parts of Gintoki. It's like the most blatant depiction of Marilyn Monroe's "if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best."

Another special thing is that Gintoki trusted Hijikata enough to break his own self's happiness with Tae Shimura. He believed Hijikata should already know Gintoki's personality well enough to face Tae. We then remember how Gintoki and HIjikata have gone through a lot of times and arcs of hell together and that despite their bickering they have a strong and indestructible bond. Gintoki was somehow confident enough that Hijikata could pull off being "Gin-san" well and figure out a solution to their problem.

GIntoki absolutely did not expect Hijikata to assume he and Otae had feelings for each other and to immediately go the romantic route. That made the whole touching and sweet encounter to turn into comedy.

Looking at the episode list, Hijikata's assumption of the nature of Gintoki and Tae's relationship was warranted though. Soul Switch happened some time after Beam Saber Arc after all. Hijikata was already aware of Gintoki's love and dedication to the Shimuras at this point.

In conclusion Gintama relationships and dynamics are really amazing. Beneath the jokes and manzai routines you get actual human and realistic feelings that we could all learn from.
