may i ask if gintae can be considered as parallel characters? since they share a lot of similarities in values and all. what do you think? i love parallel characters as much as narrative foils

I always thought they were parallels as well as foils to each other

GinTae as Parallels

Roles in community and family

Both are in wish-granting or dream-fulfilling kind of business (otae in hospitality/hostess sector and Gintoki as an Odd Jobs guy)

Considered as bosses/leaders and top class in their specific areas of specialty

Aniki (boss man, big brother) / Anego (boss lady, big sister) persona

Gintoki is kind of the Joui Vanguard (in the Joui war he is the first to rush in, and in action scense he always works alone and is the first to deploy himself)

Otae is also first line of attack/offensive defense (Silver Soul Arc-Siege of Kabukichou)

both had strong mentors that defined their way of life and philosophy. Gintoki knew Shoyo best while Otae understood their father best.

Gintoki canonically sees himself as surrogate father to Kagura sometimes

Otae raised her brother on her own after their father died

Otae also wholeheartedly accepts the Anego title Kagura bestowed on him

Gintoki is considered by Shinpachi as his Aniki too

Speak and curse in the same kabukichou accent

Personality

both act as Boke (stupid man) to the other straight man characters (tsukkomi)

both tend to hurt the people they love in order to protect/save them

Both can be incredibly self-sacrificial and suicidal for others and for their core beliefs

Both can be truly cruel at insulting others and each other (fatphobia, ageism, classism, misogyny, etc)

both are very very good at finding each other's weakness and exploiting them to cause most damage (or get them to do what the other wants)

both are very good at finding/recognizing each other no matter where or when

both have been positive and negative change to each other in many ways

Friends and Admirers

Both of them have similar group of friends. They operate in the same circles.

both of them are well loved in their community for their strong leadership and cunning bastard personas

both of them have admirers that are mirrors of each other: Kondou-Sarutobi, Kyuubei-Tsukuyo

Both of then are parallels and foils of Hijikata

Both of them are used to mingling/hanging out with opposite sex and know how to play their charms well to their advantage

Storywise

In my old posts, both Otae and Gintoki have preached the same things to other people at different points in time, which means they seriously have a lot of shared values and both live under the same life philosophy.

Them doing dogeza in Beam Saber Arc (nuff'said)

Their tragic future selves dying at the same time in Be Forever Yorozuya Movie and Novelization

Both risked their lives/ imprisonment/death penalty for Hijikata and shinsengumi

Otae earning Queen of Kabukichou title from Otose, Gintoki seen as Tatsugurou/Jirocho Protege

Similar Stands

Lots of manga panels where they mirror the same actions and dialogue on different pages

Valentine’s Day came and went with little fanfare, because neither Kyuubei nor Otae knew what to do with it. Who was supposed to be The Man in their relationship, anyway? Well, thought Kyuubei, I am clearly the more masculine of us two. I will wait for White Day to roll by, and then I’ll pull some romantic declaration out of my ass that’s so life-changing we get married on the spot. This plan is flawless.  Well, thought Otae, these gender stereotypes are pretty outdated anyway, I wouldn’t want to stick Kyuubei in The Man box against their wishes. The progressive thing to do would be to wait for them to make the first move for White Day and just follow their lead.  Suffice it to say, Kyuubei received zero chocolates on Valentine’s day. Everything went to shit.

I'm currently in gintama fandom so expect this is all about gintama hehe

Gintoki x Tsukuyo - These two selfless characters, both are incredibly strong and independent. They also share the same pain of losing their masters, which makes their relationship deeper since they know a part of each other's past. Tsukuyo knowing not just the 'Yorozuya Gintoki' and the same with Gintoki who witnessed how Tsukuyo lose her master. They fought so many times in different arcs together that made them closer. And, both are hot and sexy, how can you stop me from shipping them for many years now 😔

2. Zenzou x Sacchan - After the Shogun Assassination's Arc, they've been in a situation where she almost died, that made Zenzou confess: "I love my fuglies Sarutobi, but I've had enough of your fugly crying faces. I won't let you cry in front of me ever again."

These two are childhood friends and suddenly in a situation like that, they are THAT close? So I love their relationship and the fact that Zenzou knows she likes Gintoki.. cute. But I think Zenzou can take care of Sacchan better, he knows her better <3.

3. Sakamoto x Mutsu - I haven't drawn them together as I am a heavy gintsu shipper, but I also appreciate Sakamoto who got a bad bitch like Mutsu on his side.

4. Katsura x Ikumatsu - It's pretty obvious in Homeless Arc how he care and love Ikumatsu.

5. Yamazaki x Tama - Well, I want to root for Yamazaki and Tama. I started to lowkey ship them in episode 268.

6. Gintoki x Takasugi - I like how they care for each other to the point they cannot ignore it until we reached SA. I think I also like how Gintoki tries to protect him and the same with Sugi, I appreciate them more in Gintama Final.

7. Kyubei x Otae - These two deserve more than what the series gave them.

8. Kamui x Nobume - This is a rarepair introduced to me by @/sararaiden. It has the same energy of Umibozu x Kouka in which another ship I like.

Saw your post about ginhiji being hated by the Gintama fandom.... I don't mean this in a bad way at all and I'm sorry if I do sound mean, I promise I'm not starting a fight 🙏

But I just wanted to say that a lot of people acutally love ginhiji and it's argueably the biggest ship - lots of fics and fanarts and I personally have not seen any hate for the ship (been in the fandom for almost three years now). Especially on Twitter, there are so many cute and soft fanarts of them. I think the ship is actually so loved

Also in general the Gintama fandom is so chill and don't really care much about other people's ships, except for like, Gintoki x Otae vs Gintoki x Tsukuyo shippers lol but that was shortlived thankfully. Gintoki is so shippable so every ship with him is pretty much valid (except for Gintoki x Kagura... that one's just.... nope).

For the most part, the Gintama fandom is pretty chill, not much hate coming around, which is why I love it a lot

omg no u were actually very nice! the thing is ive seen it be overwhelmingly popular and in my experience ive seen these type of very popular ships be disliked/seen as inferior.

Some involvement and you somehow believe its the part where tae suggested tsukuyo might be more interested in gintoki, when he could've written about gints* anytime he wanted in the manga but instead he chose to waste his panels on gorilla aliens. Sure Jan.

Two what gave you that impression she was the only one not fighting over him

Because it was in the text and more than once at that. Like in bfy tsuky and sacchan were crying over gintoki but Tae was like “don’t forget to come home” and gintoki was like “I am home” and in the Silver Soul she was the only one who never said she missed him and even in the drama CD she was the only one not chasing after him.

Three sacchan and Kyubei have both expressed support to tsukuyo at least once so not a reaction shouldn’t be surprising

 If youre referring to the convos they had during the battle in Silver Soul arc then youre way off your scent because both kyubei and Sacchan didnt even know Tsu had feelings for Gintoki and they were only speaking generally about their loved ones. And besides, her entire conversation with Kyubei was about the feminine urge to fight for the person they love just to be by their side even if the person doesn't love them back.  Not to mention there is no logical explanation as to why Sacchan would out of nowhere support Tsuky confessing to Gintoki when she was still obsessed with him at the end. Youre just grasping at straws with that belief.

Fourth( and I’ve talked about this in my account)

The assumption that gintoki and otae are together is nothing more than a gag now because it’s only being used to get something out of shinpachi (you have to think about how it’s being used rather than what)

I didn’t write my 4-part gintae analysis and the gintae wiki trivia about how Gintoki and Otae’s relationship was inspired by Ryoma and Oryo’s love story to hear gintae antis spout this baseless nonsense.

You also say that she missed him of course she would everyone missed him but she was moving on with her life not just waiting around

That was not the point, the point was she didnt want to admit she missed him, when sacchan, tsuky and kyubei easily did. 

(P.s you have no right criticizing Kontae when you have a picture of Douma x shinobu in your blog you hypocrite!) 

Point me to the part in KNY where Duoma was a police captain who relentlessly stalked and sexually harass an 18 year old Shinobu and constantly flash himself, quick!

Not to bug you or your ship but

You are aware that otae has supported the idea of gintoki and tsukuyo being together right?

In a drama cd released after the final

Just letting you know

Im aware of the existence of that drama cd which wasnt even written by sorachi.

Besides, Tae’s reaction was consistent with how she reacted about gintoki many times before. When kyubei asked her about gintoki not being in edo, she said its fine because she didnt want to admit she missed him. In the final movie, she only mentioned shinpachi kagura and sadaharu who wanted to see gintoki again but not herself because she didnt want to admit she wanted to see him again too. In the drama cd she diverted the attention from herself to tsukuyo because she didnt want to admit that she likes him.

And it didnt bug me because no one in the group had any reaction when tae suggested that tsukuyo would be the one interested in who gintoki fancies, proving that that the idea of gintsu is not even worth noting. Compared to how shinpachi and sacchan became absolutely hysterical when it was suggested that tae likes gintoki because the characters know gintae have the biggest potential.

Anyway not to bug you or your ship but manga-wise gintoki and tsukuyo last interaction was 5 years before the final movie. Just letting you know.

Shimura Otae and her smile

I believe some viewers felt Otae enjoyed hurting people because her smiling followed suit of her aggressive tendencies; her brutality added at the beginning of the shows adaptation seemed especially heinous to most. Everyone throws punches left and right but her upside down frown is what leaves people with the wrong impression.

I believe international viewers are left out of the culture context about her outward appearance. I mean she looks like an everyday woman of Edo, just with a bit of a temper. I felt it was just her gimmick at first; the innocent look that does a complete one-eighty, yet that isn’t the full case.

I got done watching a reaction video (I know I’m one of those people lol). This person, who after watching the Yagyuu Arc, gave thoughts on the episode. Discussing Otae’s true genuine smile of jubilation and joy, and not the smile she always wore. The put up front reminded them of studying in Japan.

The person mentioned they actually studied abroad numerous times throughout videos. The wrap up of the arc immediately brought thought of a book their Japanese professor had given the class. They still have the book in both English and Japanese as a keepsake.

The Japanese professor was very particular, to all studying in the class, to understand the concept of the Japanese smile. How and what they were presenting in Japan could be the complete opposite of what was going on internally. That it was quite normal for someone to have a smile on their face but inside they’re in incredible pain and sorrow.

The professor brought that up when the class were reading the book Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto. It was about someone that was always smiling externally but inside there was so much trauma.

They watched the film version and the film portrayed the book quite well. In the story though, you can read the internal monologue of the main character but in the movie you don’t have access to that. So you just see the main character from the outside. And if you just watch it, without any context of Japanese culture, without the context of the book with the internal monologue, you would think; and it would leave you with a completely different impression of the main character. You wouldn’t even realize just how much pain she was in.

☝️ This here is how I think viewers see Otae. They can’t discern what they see and perceive her character as just being high-handed. This is how one would surmise her personality without truly knowing the person inside. And I suppose people believe this is her true nature. Which, I won’t lie, at times could be true . . . .

However there is also other obvious facets that people tend to overlook time after time. She was raised for a short time and by few people who taught her to smile through the tough times in life. And that concept has been embedded in her, throughout the series. It’s given her wisdom and strength at such a young age. It’s this reason that I fell for this character. She has more strength than mere brawn. This way of masking pain goes outside the boundaries of Japanese culture, nonetheless it’s something upheld as a society. It’s taught and becomes an automatic way of operating through daily life. She’s the product of that time and it’s day-to-day people. I hope this can cut her some slack from viewers who think nothing but physical power of her.

BTW for anyone interested the book is amazing. It’s a tiny read but a ton you can acquire from reading it! I highly recommend. Plus, you may find other similar characteristic’s that may have been inspiration for a persona in the Gintama series. It adds to how Sorachi takes and intertwines historical figures with important fictional works to create key roles for his own series. 😮
