‘I feel like I’m in a episode of Scooby Doo if it was injected with several pounds of crack.’ You said to yourself as you pressed yourself against a bookshelf, listen intently to the sound of armour clanking clumsily towards your aisle.

‘How is this like anything from Scooby Doo?’ Ashley asked, wondering how you and Leon could make commentary at the most inappropriate of times, as though what you were facing wasn’t fully capable of killing you both.

You shrugged, ‘ya know, the black knight’s ghost.’

Ashley only looked at you.

‘The suit of armour that’s haunted?’

She still says nothing.

‘That speaks in old English?’

The blonde only blinks in response.

You huffed, closing your eyes tightly, ‘from the James Gunn’s Live action Scooby Doo; Monsters Unleashed movie starting Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddy Prince Jr, Matthew Lillard of Scream fame, Linda Cardellini and Neil Fanning as the voice of Scooby Doo.’

Ashley’s eyes widened as a smile spread across her face in recognition. ‘Oh yeah! That movie! Why didn’t you say so in the first place.’

‘I did but I keep forgetting you’re too young to understand what I’m referring to.’ You muttered under your breath. ‘Wait, is it just me or has the room surely grown silent?’ You asked when you couldn’t hear the sound of armour shifting anymore.

‘Now that you mentioned it…it has gotten a bit too quite.’ Ashley adds as your sudden awareness only made the grand library even more quiet, to the point where the only thing either of you could hear were your breaths and other parts of the castle that were considerably more active then yours.

Knowing that you’d only be hindering the mission by standing there, awaiting for something to happen, you moved out from the bookshelf, flashlight in one hand and gun in the other, as you scanned the area for any potential threats before you felt yourself being tackled to the floor; which knocked the air from your lungs and scattered your flashlight and gun away from your hands.

‘Y/n!’ Ashley cried out in terror as she watched you wrestle the person off of you before pinning them to the polished floor instead with your knees pining their hips as your hands pinned their wrists above their head.

‘Ashley, gimme some light over here so we can get a good look at the son of a bitch.’ You commanded slightly out of breath as Ashley obeyed and came to your side and shed some light onto your attacker, only to reveal…

‘Leon?’ You both asked in unison.

‘Hello to you too,’ Leon grunts, not wanting to openly admit to liking his current position beneath you a little more then he probably should. ‘I’m not one for getting roughed up but I’m pretty certain you bruised my wrists, partner or mine’ Leon, said but immediately regretted everything when he saw the unimpressed look upon your face.

‘You prick.’ You cursed as you released his wrists and got off of him, not even bothering in lending him a hand in getting up as you moved to leave. ‘I thought you were those infested knights or something.’

‘Not funny dickhead, not funny.’ Ashley said, also unimpressed with his stunt, before throwing the flashlight onto his stomach, causing him to grunt as she then followed after you, leaving him behind.

‘Thanks for helping me up guys.’ Leon huffed as he hauled himself up off the floor, flashlight in hand as he followed after you both, knowing that he’s going to be receiving the silent treatment here on out.

Have I gotten over Batgirls ending? No, I haven't.   But there are a few things that give me peace when it comes to Cass still remaining as Batgirl for the future.

This does feel different than say 2006, 2009, and 2011. I feel okay here and not this overwhelming fear of dread or concern like in either of those years. The reasons being--

#1 Spirit World has her in it and as Batgirl. Six months (so far) of Cass as Batgirl in it. I'm square with that. Do I want the series to last longer than six issues? YES! I love Alyssa Wong writing Cass and gimme more of Haining drawn-Cass, please!

Also, it looks like we're getting Dustin Nguyen variants for each issue. Took DC long enough to do more of this and if you aren't getting this series for all of the above-mentioned which is mystical antics with Cass teaming with Xanthe and Constantine-- then COME ON?!

#2 DC and more importantly WB is pushing the character.  We have a variation of Cass coming next week with Batman: The Doom that Came to Gotham and of course Bat Wheels has her too!

While neither is embracing the comic version, I'm actually okay with both interpretations.  Um...  cute my spoilerish thoughts on that.

I really want a sequel short with an older Ka Li Cain suiting up as a Bat to combat a new mystical threat that ends up with BATman helping her. There are so many seeds throughout that showcase Kai Li is just as resourceful like Bruce was in the animated movie.

Then there's the James Gunn factor. The tease a month ago with him saying four characters Bleeding Cool listed should be in his universe. Cass does have good odds and the comic market might be agreeing.

Literally, searching now for Cass on eBay, the market is speccing HARD that she'll be showing up. They do get some things wrong, but my gut says this might happen. We have Cass in various things above and if is next-gen it makes sense for her to be Batgirl in Brave & the Bold.

Really my one fear is the latest teaser had Babs as Batgirl (no Cass or Steph). Literally, this was my third clue something bad was happening to Batgirls...

It also feels so wrong that each hero has a generational link save well Babs in this teaser (save to Bruce). Literally, you could've easily put Cass in there and it ease some more minds.

But that leads me to one thing. I feel like Stephanie Brown is getting the short straw. I love the character, and I feel like if someone is getting shorted it's her sadly.

Cass has so much going still, but Steph? *cricket chirps* Literally, she should be involved in a comic too and I guess all we have is her helping Jason in the Joker ongoing.

Again, I feel like DC Comics fumbled the ball with Batgirls, particularly with Babs in those early issues, and because of that it never caught on until the later ones.

I don't mind Babs in Nightwing as Batgirl or Oracle. I've more at peace of her balancing BOTH identities. Just that when she becomes Batgirl it SHOULD be a "business has about to have picked up" moment.

Babs as Batgirl shouldn't job (and if she is it's something she shouldn't have a chance against aka what Batman vs. Robin did last month. I can’t believe I’m saying something positive on this comic).

It should be treated as a MOMENT. Really #13 gave us just that. A moment where Bruce/Babs/Zee helped out Cass/Steph. Also the tease in this week's issue is also good (more on that another day).

The biggest problem Batgirls had in those early issues was Babs stealing the spotlight from Cass/Steph and Seer in #5-8).  If you had Cass/Steph beating the Saints, Tutor, and Spellbinder. Add depth to Seer in #7-8?

We might have talked differently about this comic. But I'm not gonna fault the writers. They were given things beyond their control and did the best they could.

Clearly, #9 to now shows they can deliver some good stuff.  The problem is... a good chunk bailed prior. I just wish DC gave Batgirls a better chance.  I think all three characters are OWED that. After all the shenanigans done to them in the last TWENTY YEARS.

But the stuff I said earlier does make me feel at least comfortable that Cass can boomerang back. Because as I said numerous times over.

I'll cherish these next issues more so now. If this truly is the end of this comic. Because this comic for all its faults was a GIFT. May not have been a flawless one it still was a gift. I'll keep treasuring it. #Batgirls4life.

Just watched the GoTG Holiday Special and... OMG it's awesome!! Gunn, you absolute beauty! I adore him and I adore the Guardians.

Spoilers ahead.

Gunn has such a great handle on these characters, watching this left me wanting more and now I can't freaking wait for Vol 3!

Mantis jumping like an insect! I didn't know I needed this until now, loved it. Also, what's with Mantis getting so happy about Steve? 😂

She sees the guy dressed as Steve and goes running to him saying "Steeeeeeeeeeve!!", what's with that? lol Yeah, we love him too, Mantis, calm down lmao

Nebula dancing? Hell yeah. She's healing now that she's away from that monster and she's surrounded by people who treat her well, can't wait to see more of her in Vol 3. And... she got Bucky's arm for Rocket!!

I won't even ask how 😂😂

I loved Quill being the reasonable one and calling them out for kidnapping Kevin Bacon. Really can't express this enough, I so want to see a Quill that's more serious and mature. If this is what we're going to have in Vol 3 then fuck yeah I'm gonna love it.

Yondu trying to protect Quill by telling him sentiment will make him weak and the universe will eat him for it, but in the end Yondu is the most sentimental of all. It's like that scene he has with Rocket in Vol 2.

Also, Mantis fighting! Damn, she's got a few good moves, I want more of that. She was the highlight really, gotta love it when she uses her power to make that woman give her all her money lol Way to go, Mantis, that's not morally reprehensible at all 😂😂

And the scene where Kevin Bacon gets service on his phone and Kraglin gives some half-assed explanation has got to be one of the best in the special. I could almost hear Gunn say "yeah whatever, he has service, who the fuck cares why" 😂

And Groot as a Xmas tree!!

All the moments shared by the characters are genuine, they're sincere. It's a mix of jokes, comedy and emotion. I went from laughing to shedding tears in a matter of seconds.

I think one of the things that really puts Gunn above other directors who have tried to bring comedy to their movies and failed miserably is that the Guardians' installments have so much heart and they're not afraid of showing it.

The scene where Mantis finally confesses that she's Quill's sister is not undermined by any joke or anything that takes away from her words (and tears). Quill says that reveal is the greatest Xmas gift he could possibly have and they hug each other, that scene is allowed to be emotional and sincere and meaningful.

That's what Gunn does so well and what sets him apart.

Now gimme Vol 3!!

Most Anticipated Movies 2023

Though the COVID pandemic can still be referenced within the film realm as the recent Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery does, the movie industry itself has now seemingly fully recovered from those lockdown days and we now get to enjoy the full might of Hollywood and indies yet again. As such 2023 is proving to be a stacked yet for movies. There’s a lot of them! So many! Many of which will most likely be crap, but here I am listing the ones I am most excited for. Again, come end of 2023 and prepped for disappointment for a lot of these, but as of right now I am full of hopes and dreams! So, in no particular order...

HONOURABLE CURIOUS MENTIONS: Oppenheimer, Next Goal Wins, The Old Way, Wonka, Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part One, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

John Wick: Chapter 4 - It simply doesn’t get better than seeing Hollywood sweetheart the beautiful Keanu Reeves plays an unkillable hitman who is able to kill a man with a single pencil or a book or any item at his disposal, let alone give him a gun. Those headshots then come at the speed of a Call of Duty pro-player! So obviously I want to see what’s next for Mr Wick.

Killers of the Flower Moon - Let the Brendan Fraser renaissance continue! It’s been absolutely adorably awesome seeing him back and looking so happy and pleased to be appreciated for how amazing he is! I mean, yes Killers of the Flower Moon also happens to be a new crime drama from one of cinema’s greats Martin Scorsese featuring a cast including Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert de Niro, but honestly I’m just happy seeing Fraser getting solid work again. Go get them tiger! 

Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre - Technically this was originally slated as an early 2022 release, however due to distribution issues it has been moved a year later. Regardless, Guy Ritchie always makes slick gangster flicks, with his recent The Gentlemen being especially cool and badass, so I’m willing to see Ritchie continue making these types of films as many times as he wants, as long as his dialogue stays sharp and Hugh Grant keeps saying “Darling” during every appearance.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie - Setting aside the controversial lack of effort that Chris Pratt is putting into that Mario voice, this animated effort from Universal and Illumination is actually looking surprisingly enjoyable. The animation looks great and there are some great nostalgic call backs to the games, and even the voice cast (aside from Pratt) are all sounding great. That Bowser voice from Jack Black - woah!! Can’t wait to hear more of that! 

Napoleon - Ridley Scott is doing a movie about Napoleon, and Napoleon himself is played by Joaquin Phoenix. Great director, superb actor, an integrally interesting historical figure at the narrative centre... what’s not to be excited for!

Knock at the Cabin - M. Night Shyamalamalamalamadingdong is back with another plot twist. Look, M Night is very hit-and-miss, and when he’s great he’s great, but when he’s bad he’s bad in a fun way. His last film Old was filled with plot-holes, inconsistencies and ridiculous narrative choices, yet I had a ball watching it and pointing out all the obvious foreshadowing. And then Shyamalan is also responsible for The Happening, which, well, happened. Anyway, new Shyamalan film - gimme gimme gimme!

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 - Before James Gunn fully takes over the running of DC films (though he already took Henry Cavill as Superman away from us the monster!!!) he still has one Guardians film from Marvel left for us. And though I was not a fan of Vol. 2, the recent Holiday Special has reinstated my hope in this ragtag space-travelling group of outcasts, and Gunn himself has been on a roll with The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, so they’ve got this. Also Rocket has an otter girlfriend in this one so I’m ready to witness some animal loving. 

Barbie - Okay, so it’s okay for a guy to look forward to a Barbie movie?? What’s so wrong with that?? It’s not weird! I don’t have a thing for dolls if that’s what you’re thinking. Nope, in fact I am more hoping that similar to how The Lego Movie managed to take a famous toy and create a superbly meta entertaining movie classic, Barbie shows promise to also go against conventional genre tropes and do something different weird. At least judging from that 2001: A Space Odyssey piss-take of the teaser, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach have created something real unique. Also Ryan Gosling as Ken.....either the greatest casting choice or the worst decision ever. We’ll see...

Renfield - Nicolas Cage is a worldwide treasure, and one thought that him playing himself in a movie was the craziest thing yet. Nah, now he’s playing Dracula. Yep, THE Nicolas Cage is playing THE Count Dracula! And this time he really is a vampire!

Cocaine Bear - It’s a bear that’s high off it’s tits on cocaine and is going on a murderous rampage whilst trying to get more cocaine. I don’t need this to be a good movie. I don’t need it to win any awards. I just want there to be bears, I want there to be cocaine, and ideally those two to be connected for the entire time. What’s more is this is based on the real life story of a 175lb black bear who ingested a duffel bag of abandoned cocaine in northern Georgia in 1985. I mean yes that bear died fairly quickly, but in the movie they’ve evidently taken some creative choices (and definitely the correct ones!!) and instead this bear is simply killing everyone left and right and being high as a kite. And from that recent trailer from the very first appearance you can tell that this bear is on cocaine. That is all I want.
