Sinking a ship takes skill, intense planning, and strong tails. Or, if you're Robin and seven guppies, it takes incredible, unbridled rage and a worry that could kill a Kraken. A ship that should take half the day to sink only takes the group two hours, their tails bashing against the hull and claws ripping planks to let seawater surge inside. Dustin is particularly brutal, recruiting Lucas and Mike to help him use the same net that caught him and took Steve to drag the ship beneath the waves.
Between tending to Dustin's wounds, lying to the pod about why they're going to be away for a while, and actually tracking the damned thing, it took Robin and the guppies a few days to catch up to the ship. And as they scavenge the drowned wreckage, pushing past broken doors and through holes in the hull, it becomes increasingly clear that they're too late.
"Where could he be?!" Dustin shouts, his gills flaring and bubbles rising in an enraged pattern above him. He takes a spear and jabs it into a water-bloated plank. "If he's not here, that means he escaped, right? So why hasn't he found us yet?"
"Steve could have been taken by another ship," El points out, her head poking from behind a mast. She's gained a dagger with a jewel-encrusted hilt and is currently using her nails to dig the jewels out and drop them into a seaweed bag.
Robin frowns, swimmingly anxiously in circles. She's not the one that's good with guppies. That's Steve. If she's the fun caretaker that encourages them to play Scuttlefish with sharks, Steve is the one a tail's-length behind dragging them back to the pod before they can get hurt. He's the one who knows how to keep the guppies calm and healthy. Robin is the one who keeps them energetic and chaotic.
"He was definitely here," Will says, swimming out from a cabin on the ship. He stops in front of Robin and holds his hands out, letting her see the dull, blood-stained scales sitting in his palms.
With a shaking hand, Robin takes the scales and turns them over, hoping they're somehow not Steve's. But he's her partner. Robin could recognize him by the flick of his tail alone. So, of course, she knows they're Steve's scales at a glance.
She turns, her tail creating a small current that brushes over the guppies and forces them to look at her. "If he's not on this one," she says, "then we'll just keep sinking ships until we find him."
"Let's start with the other ship," Erica says.
"The other ship?" Robin asks.
Erica nods, pointing in the direction they'd just come from. "A few leagues before we found this one, I saw another one that was sailing in the other direction. Maybe they crossed paths."
For a brief moment, Robin wonders how she missed the other ship. But then she remembers how she's been caught between her own worries and keeping the guppies from spiraling, and she gives herself a break. "Yeah," she says, nodding as she closes her fingers over the scales. The edges cut into her palms but don't draw blood. "Let's go track down that ship. But don't keep something like that from me next time."
The guppies all nod in agreement, and Robin looks at the wreckage around them. She's half-tempted to let the guppies loot the rest of the ship, but she knows they're all aching to find Steve already. So, Robin herds them away from the sunken ship in the direction Erica pointed and hopes Steve can hold on for just a little longer.

Excerpt from "The Lovelorn Fool's Guide to Merfolk Courtship"
Song Types
There are several song types that merfolk are likely to use in their lifetime. While the human ear cannot distinguish the intricacies of the songs, it can tell the major categories apart.
As newly-born guppies, they know only how to vocalize wordless sounds based on their needs. These sounds are referred to as Guppy Songs. These songs are generally lacking in any real melody or rhythm. They are rough and unskilled, but many caretakers consider them precious.
Pod songs are shared tunes and melodies among the pod to communicate big news. When hearing a pod song from a lone merperson, it will sound incomplete. Pod songs usually require at least one other merperson to support or respond to the initial measures, which creates a complete and satisfying loop.
Individual songs are varied and unique, as the name suggests. They cover a range of emotions that simply can't be communicated through regular speech or bubble patterns (to learn more about bubble patterns, please see Part I: The Basics). Among these songs, the most important to know is the courting song, which can actually be multiple songs using the same opening measures and melodies with slightly different tones.
Now that you know the most basic kind of songs, we can move to harmonizing. Truthfully, a human's ability to harmonize with a merperson is nearly impossible. However, it can be done with an instrument, which can reach ranges the human voice cannot. So, if you don't know how to play one, I'd suggest learning. Harmonizing is a key step in the courtship process, after all.
----
Steve shrieks as Eddie spins him around, the sound high and grating, and clings tighter to Eddie's neck. His tailfin slaps Eddie behind his knee, hard enough to make him falter and slip on the rain-soaked deck. He falls on his ass, Steve safely in his lap, and laughs. The charms in his hair knock against each other, and Steve idly reaches up to brush his finger against one. "What was that for?" Eddie asks, the words slightly breathless.
"You surprised me," Steve says, frowning slightly as raindrops catch in his eyelashes and make them heavy. He holds a hand above his eyes and then does the same for Eddie.
"You just looked so pretty, sweetheart," Eddie says, grinning at Steve like he knows what bubble pattern his fluttering gills would create (flustered and flattered).
He rolls his eyes, looking at the sky and sea in the distance. The ocean is surging, and waves and sea foam collide as the wind picks up force. Dark clouds hang over the sea, and Steve would be concerned if he didn't know the storm would clear up soon. He can tell from the sound of the ocean and the taste in the air: the water isn't angry enough and there isn't enough salt on his lips.
The rain is still going to turn brutal, though, and Steve would prefer they weren't on deck when it happens. He overheard Asher and Jeff talking about the last time Eddie got soaked to the bone and got sick. He's not sure what a "cold" is, but he doesn't want Eddie catching it again.
"Let's go back to the cabin," he says, looking back at Eddie with a light smile. "I want to hear you play that, uh, gee-tare."
"Guitar, Stevie," Eddie corrects, holding Steve tight as he stands. He has an excited smile, something expectant in his eyes that Steve still hasn't figured out.
Steve hums, knowing very well how it's pronounced, but he likes to see the somewhat dopey smile Eddie gets whenever he mispronounces something. He gets the feeling Eddie also knows he's doing it on purpose, but he's not said anything yet.
Eddie carries him down to the captain's cabin, kicking the door shut with his foot. "Where do you want to be, sweetheart?" he asks.
After a moment's consideration, Steve gestures to the bed, looking forward to the soft pillows and even softer sheets. When Eddie places him down, he wiggles until his tail is curled comfortably, soaking the sheets beneath him, and looks at Eddie expectantly.
"Any requests?" Eddie asks, clearly amused as he grabs his guitar and hops onto the bed next to Steve. His knee brushes against Steve's tail, drawing Steve's attention briefly to the faint scar that lingers across his scales.
He's been healed for almost a day now, and Steve should probably start bracing himself to say goodbye, but he'd like to remain in denial a little longer. He doesn't want to leave. Even if he knows he'll come right back with Robin and the guppies, Steve doesn't want to be away from Eddie that long. They haven't even confirmed their courtship. Leaving before they do means any merperson with half a brain could see how much of a pearl Eddie is and try to steal him away.
Steve forces the thought away, forces himself to focus on answering Eddie's question, and shakes his head. "Just play something," he says.
Eddie nods and thinks a moment as he tunes the guitar. "Could you hum something?" he asks.
When he looks up at Steve again, there's something oddly intense in his gaze. He looks determined, as though something very important is riding on this moment. Steve isn't sure what it is, exactly, but he knows he doesn't want it to pass him by. Steve nods and starts humming a soft and familiar tune, one he's used a lot more after meeting Eddie.
It must be the right choice, because Eddie practically lights up, a grin tugging at his lips and crinkling the corners of his eyes as he listens. After a few seconds, he starts plucking strings on the guitar, adding a gentle accompaniment that makes Steve's humming rock back and forth like the ocean currents.
Usually, Eddie plays fast, his music filling Steve with the same heat and energy as an underwater volcano in the middle of an eruption. But this is slow and sweet like the honey Steve tried a few days ago. It creeps through him, his gills fluttering with each note that Eddie pulls from his guitar. He feels soft and happy, his voice shifting to follow Eddie's lead as inspiration hits him.
They trade the lead back and forth between them, and Steve starts to actually sing at some point. He doesn't know when he opened his mouth and started to vocalize the notes instead of just humming them, a sweet melody forming as his voice resonates with the guitar. It just happens as naturally as swimming. Steve can no longer tell where his voice ends and the guitar begins. They've fallen into sync, strumming and singing together without missing a beat.
Steve leans closer, his heart pounding against his ribs even faster than usual. They're harmonizing. He realizes it suddenly, but it doesn't catch him off-guard. It's just a whisper in the back of his mind, a little nudge that makes him smile and move without thinking beyond the desire to be closer.
The song doesn't end naturally. In fact, Eddie is in the middle of a particularly lovely string of notes when Steve kisses him, still humming low in his throat. Eddie's fingers fumble, a sour note pulling from the guitar, but Steve doesn't care. He's too busy wrapping one hand around the back of Eddie's neck and placing the other on Eddie's chest.
He can feel Eddie's heart beating just as rapidly as his own, and Steve presses closer. He's barely balancing on his tail as Eddie moves the guitar from his lap, pushing it to the side of the bed while he kisses Steve back. Eddie pushes his hand into Steve's hair, tangling his fingers in the strands.
Steve's humming happily rises in pitch, and he finally loses his balance, his weight pressing entirely on Eddie and causing him to fall back on the bed. The kiss breaks when Eddie bounces slightly, their foreheads knocking together, and Steve can't help laughing.
"You're fucking gorgeous, sweetheart," Eddie whispers, his free hand trailing to Steve's waist and settling on his back. His fingers brush against the line where scales meet skin, and Steve shudders, his mouth going dry, and he kisses Eddie again before he can say another word.

Octavinelle x Lighthouse Keeper Reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The sun hangs high in the sky, the waves lap at the shore, the salty sea breeze blows gently and sways the hair of a young lighthouse keeper. They have been caring for the lighthouse for a few years now, the task inherited to them by their grandfather.
The human walks along the shoreline, looking for pieces of seaglass and smoothed porcelain, collecting them like a magpie. They often pick up pieces of trash and debris as well, wanting to take care of the shore and sea where they live. Their satchel  has been pretty light today, glad their hard work is paying off and their home has been properly cared for.
They take a deep breath, breathing in the salty sea air, and look to the sky with wonder and appreciation. They’ve always loved the sea, oftentimes spending time with their grandfather and spending the summers of their youth in his lighthouse. Their gaze flickers to the lighthouse they now inhabit, their brows furrowing in sorrow. They remember the long summer days where they accompanied him in his tasks, knowing the lighthouse and how to care for it just as well as he, but they were too young to realize he was preparing them for when the time came for the lighthouse to be theirs…
They are interrupted from their thoughts by snarling and thrashing, and their curiosity is piqued. They cautiously approach, moving along the shoreline as quietly as they can as their boot clad feet crunch the small stones and crushed sea shells underneath their steps. They peer around a large stone, their breath catching in their throat at the sight. A man, or at least part of one, with a long serpentine tail and fins along their spine. They are a color reminiscent of the sea, a blue and green mix that's otherworldly. They crouch down, hiding behind the stone as they stare at the creature. It, whatever it is, is tangled in a fishing net, the rope digging into its odd skin and scales, and only getting more tight as it thrashes and squirms. They take a small step forward, their feet slipping from the loose stones and shells.
They fall with a yelp, sliding and landing on their back, and they scramble to sit up when the creature snarls. They back up, their back against the rock, their eyes wide and their chest heaving from the adrenaline running through their veins. They look at the creature, frightened but still curious despite it all, and their brows furrow. The tales their grandfather told them come to mind, stories of creatures of the sea. Of sirens and mermaids and krakens, but they believed them to be just that, stories. Until now, they suppose.
The creature snarls, low and deep, in its throat, sending goosebumps along their skin. They pant, processing their thoughts as they practically whisper in utter disbelief.
“W-What are you?...”
They curiously lean closer and yelp, falling backwards as the creature snarls and slashes at them, the net keeping it from moving closer to them. They sit upright once more, not taking their eyes off of it for a second. Its chest is heaving, the gills along the side of its body opening and closing like its a difficult endeavor. They realize it's been out of the water for far too long, their body no longer moist as there is no reflection from the sunlight off of their scaly skin. They reach into their pocket, pulling out the knife and flicking open the blade, causing the creature to snarl once again, the large fin on their back rising threateningly. They rise slowly, holding the pocketknife in a shaky hand, taking a deep breath before quickly lunging at the creature. They grab the rope, slicing it, and freeing the creature.
Next thing they know, they're pinned underneath the creature as it snarls and snaps its teeth at them. They close their eyes tightly, turning their head away from it as their body shakes in fear. But the creature doesn’t hurt them, it leans down and smells the crook of their neck. They stay still, not wanting to thrash underneath the creature and cause it to hurt them. It simply smells them before scrambling off of them, slipping back into the water without leaving so much as a scratch on them.
They sit up, looking at the water as a small smile pulls on their lips. They stand, dusting off their pants before gathering the fishing net to prevent any more mishaps with unnatural creatures getting tangled in it. They glance to the water again before waving, not even knowing if the creature is still there, and turn to head back to their lighthouse.
But the creature is there, watching the odd little human with two more of its kind, curious about them and their kindness. The three of them already plan on meeting them again, intrigued by this odd human, and are wanting to make more than just a deal.

I know there are characters I missed; if you want to ask about someone, please do! I’d be happy to assign them a fish! Also if you want to know the reasoning behind any of these choices, I’m happy to answer! I will discuss fish choices ALL DAY. (Ex. Most engineers or scientists were assigned species of octopus/squid because having more arms is useful.) :]
The Mercraft: Fish Mode tag just started out as the MC:SM equivalent of Mermay for me but y’all are free to use it even if you have differing fish ideas for the characters! Bonus: Aiden and Radar’s concepts can be found here!

3. “You really couldn’t have been any more obvious.” “That’s because I didn’t have anything to hide. I was being obvious, because I needed you to know, without a doubt, that I love you.”
39. “Chasing you is like chasing the rainbow… It’s impossible. You’re always slipping away no matter how fast I run after you.”
Thank you for sending this in! 😁 Please feel free to send more if you'd like! Any au you want. 😎
Adam struggled against the firm grip of the Krakens tentacles that were wrapped around his body keeping him in place. A hand came out and gently plucked his hat from his head and placed it on the ground next to the mountain of treasure that the King of the seven seas surrounded himself with. "Let me go, asshole!" Adam snarled, but he was only brought in closer to the king. The hand that removed his hat caressed his jawline from ear to chin.
Lucifer hummed as he gazed adoringly at his most prized jewel. "Never again my precious gem."
"The only reason I'm here is because you threatened to destroy an entire island full of innocent fucking people. You're crazy!" Adam tried to move again but the grip only got tighter.
Lucifer leaned in closer to Adams face, he gripped his jaw to make the sea captain look him in the eye. "If you felt want and longing the way I did — the way I still do — I promise you’d be driven fucking mad, too." He placed a kiss on Adams nose, he laughed when the captain wrinkled it and was practically cross eyed looking at his own nose. Or at least as much as someone could with only one good eye. "I've waited so long to have you."
Adam scoffed. "After what you did?"
"For the last time, your eye was an accident. Why the fuck would I purposely damage one of the things I love most about you?" Lucifer said feeling like they just kept having the same conversation.
"Right." Adam looked Lucifer over. “You really couldn’t have been any more obvious. Wearing your heart on your sleeve like that."
“That’s because I didn’t have anything to hide. I was being obvious, because I needed you to know, without a doubt, that I love you.” Lucifer pulled Adams back flush to his chest, he started to kiss the humans ear, cheek, jaw and neck. Hands rubbing up and down on his chest. Lucifer smirked when he heard Adam gasp softly, he licked a strip back up to his ear to whisper. "I searched the seven seas high and low for you all these years. Imagine my surprise when I see you working for the Royal Navy."
Adam wiggled against Lucifer, he really hoped that was a dagger poking him in the ass. "I needed a job."
"As my queen you'll never need to work again." Lucifer kissed his cheek. “Chasing you is like chasing the rainbow… It’s impossible. You’re always slipping away no matter how fast I run after you." He got back close to Adams ear. "Now that I've caught you, I'm never letting go."
Lucifer turned Adams head and smashed their lips together, stealing the air from Adam's lungs. He let his magic flow through him into Adam, if he was to rule by his side he would need to breathe underwater. When he pulled away from the kiss he watched as his magic did it's job.
Adam's brown eyes turned to gold, even the injured one was a pale golden color. Gills opened up on his neck, his skin changed from tan to a slightly more blue shade. His hands became webbed, Adam groaned in pain as tentacles of his own grew out of his back golden in color. "The fuck did you do to me!?"
"Made you perfect." And Lucifer kissed him again.

God, Ouizzy is just so fucking DELICIOUS.
Frenchie is the captain, Izzy his loyal second. The two of them, over the year that follows S2, develop a far, far healthier relationship than Ed and Izzy ever managed.
Frenchie isn't the Best Captain Ever - he's still soft about the gills, and though he's... intimately familiar with the horrors of the world, with a past he likes to keep locked up in that box in his mind where all the Bad Things go, he never particularly wanted to be a pirate. He cares more about his crew than obtaining massive wealth or leaving a fearsome legacy.
Izzy is so fucking okay with that, after everything.
Sure, Frenchie is a soft touch (in comparison to Ed 'kill all pets' Teach in the pre-Bonnet era). But he also respects Izzy's opinion and is learning that sometimes, it is important to enforce orders when you live aboard a vessel whose upkeep is all that stands between you and a watery grave. He uses Izzy as an enforcer and Bad Cop when necessary (as Izzy very much likes to be used), and is intelligent enough to figure out that Izzy is a major fucking asset so long as you don't make him be literally the only one aboard doing everyone else's job, or constantly make him fear for his crew's life.
As for how he feels about him... Well, Frenchie's still shaky on that.
Like. There was that time in the Kraken era, when Izzy was feverish and dying of leg-rot and smelled really fucking gross. One day Frenchie came down to bring him water and Izzy was... crying.
He tried to cover it up, putting on his usual tough act, telling Frenchie to fuck off. But after everything he did for the crew, Frenchie couldn't not comfort him. So he crawled onto the bed behind him and just... hugged him. For ages. Until Izzy's stiff body slowly melted into pliancy, conforming to the curve of Frenchie's arms.
They lay like that half the night, one of them sweating and rotting from the inside, the other spooned up behind him like he could suck the fever-heat out of his broken, shaky little body.
Izzy was out of it, by the end of the night. Totally out of it. Frenchie can't think why else he'd rolled in his embrace and given him a sleepy, sour kiss, that felt far too much like a goodbye.
Only... Izzy lived. He's Frenchie's trusted subordinate now, the two of them running their own ship, hunting down Ricky as part of Zheng's new fleet. And that kiss stretches between them, every hour of every day, an invisible, unspoken thread.
it meant nothing. Frenchie's sure it meant nothing. Izzy was dying! Practically hallucinating! Hell, it was probably intended for Ed.
But Frenchie can't stop thinking about it. Izzy doesn't particularly like physical contact, but Frenchie is THE person on the crew who he's most comfortable with, tactilely speaking. He lets Frenchie grab his hand or sling an arm around his shoulders or rest his head on his lap whenever he wants. And he's kinda cute in a grumpy old-man sorta way. And Frenchie maybe wants to kiss him again -
But he fucking knows Izzy's still reeling from everything that happened with The Kraken, even if, like Frenchie, Izzy refuses to confront half of it. He's uncomfortably aware of their power dynamic, and Izzy's rather disturbing (i.e., kinky but entirely unexplored) relationship with authority. The last thing he wants is to push in where he's not wanted - or, worse, become a bandage slapped over a poorly healed wound.
#
Though Izzy was slightly sceptical of Frenchie's abilities at first, he threw himself wholeheartedly behind his captaincy for multiple reasons. Firstly... Izzy had his stint at captain. Izzy knows he doesn't particularly, uh, suit that role. He got mutinied on faster than even Jack's record (fucking embarrassing; Izzy's glad he's dead, if only because he'd never live that down).
Secondly... Well, this lackadaisical, supersititious musician kid seemed like just another of Bonnet's frails at first - but during the Kraken Era, he came into his own. He was fucked up by Ed, badly, like all of them were. But though it left him with a big fucking locked box that he refuses to talk about with anyone, it showed Frenchie that he could step up to the task, and use his skillset of trickery and guile to protect those he cares about (like, pretending he killed Izzy to keep him safe from Ed).
Now, Izzy's pretty damn sure Frenchie can walk the necessary line between Bonnet's softness and the hardship required of pirates. And, better yet, he thinks Frenchie might know it too. And he wants to be right there at Frenchie's side, protecting him, every step of the way.
Plus, y'know. There's that whole thing where Frenchie (who, for as long as Izzy knew him, looked out for number one) carried him into the hidden space within the ships' walls and tended to him against Blackbeard's orders. Risking his life for Izzy's worthless one, which was (so they all presumed at the time) pretty much over anyway.
And suuuuuure, Izzy was delirious. But, uh. He was also really fucking impressed. In that moment, Frenchie went in his mind from being another 'crewmate Izzy had to protect' to a 'crewmate who is protecting him; who thinks of Izzy as an equal, worthy of kindness and compassion'. Hell, Izzy may have had emotions about it, as they lay tangled on Izzy's damp sickbed, awaiting his death. He has distinct memories of a kiss.
But that's all in the past. They left Stede and Ed in their inn and sailed away to start a better life with the rest of the crew - a fresh break, a clean start. Izzy doesn't want to know if The Kiss actually happened, or if it was just a fever dream (HAHAHAHAA IT'S EATING HIM UP INSIDE). But he's sure as hell NOT gonna ask.
Look what happened the last time he fell in love with his Captain, after all.
Anyway: they are THEE recipe for traumatised mutual pining <3

I frickin LOVE the extreme size difference between kraken and clownfish reader! Please, sir, can we have some more??
A living, breathing human. One you at least assume to be. It's really hard to tell since it's been so long, and their current situation.
After exploring the ruins of the latest in numerous ship cracks in the region, you swam up to the surface to experiment with your new toy in its proper environment. As hard as you tried, instruments just didn't play well underwater. On land you discovered the horrific aftermath of what you thought to be a natural disaster, a visceral sea of crimson and improvised weapons strewn across the shore as far as the eye could see. There wasn't a remain in sight of what caused either beside the rotting wood of a ship and a single leg peaking from the intact helm of the ship. It twitches as a broken spear washes onto shore and sticks its boot.
Saving your shock for a better time, you rush over to help the survivor. It takes all of your strength to pull the wheel off their crushed limb, prolonged by moans and pained breaths causing you to let go out of fear of hurting them more. You pull them as close to the water without submerging them to check their injuries. Their pants leg was dyed red, but upon rolling back their sleeve there's sickening relief that the blood was likely from the shed around them, and their leg wasn't irreparable despite the bruising. Their forehead was spilt open, and their body was covered head to toe in smaller battle wounds, but they would live.
You tear off the driest part of their shirt and wrap it around their head. Hissing in pain as you tie it tight, the human's eyes flutter open. They fall on you momentarily, but their focus swiftly draws elsewhere - passive confusion soaring to unbridled fear. You don't have the pleasure not opportunity to ask them what's wrong.
A tendril locking around your waist and arms, you're dragging back into the sea - hurled through the tides so rapidly your vision temporary goes black before fading back into the murky blue depth of the ocean. The tendril is so thick it completely immobilizes you all the way down to your tail; left hopelessly to flail and scream as you're pulled down to the sea floor and back at the mouth of the ship. Through its smile of minced flesh and pointed teeth, you realize it was not the ship looking down on you, but the glowing eyes of your captor. Released from its tendrils, the chance of your escape is greatly weakened as the beast takes you in its enormous hand instead.
"Little one, it hurts me so to see you in cohorts with the enemy...."
The best approximation to your scale would be the time you entertained a group of children on a cruise ship. The smallest, friendliest one of the bunch had the most adorable doll you had ever seen. It fit snuggly in the crook of their arms and was no longer than their torso, waving to you as the ship passed by. Somehow, you were even smaller than that to this creature. Its single hand fit perfectly around your midsection with room to spare. One bite and your head would be taken clean off. If you could've grown pale in the gills you would have.
"please don't eat me...."
Can something thing big even hear a feeble little thing like you? You're probably part of its dessert, not even the full thing. The Kraken's tremendous laughter answers your question in one way or another.
"Eat you? Eat you? Even frightened you put on the best performances, my love. Why in the seven seas would I eat my mate? It's true you be on the smaller side, but you have done what no other creature has done in ages. Make me laugh."
You now know the source of those distance chuckles after every show. Back then you used to write it off as another mystery of the sea.
"I made my peace washing you from afar, but seeing you continue to play with our food broke my heart in two and left me no choice but to claim you now. I do care for you, but you will need to earn my forgiveness if you want your freedom. I pray you have your best material in memory."

Care to share some facts about the ROs?
Daeron:
Has an aviary filled with song birds from various parts of Arlatha— one of his favorite ways to pass the time is walking through it, simply listening to the beautiful melodies of the world.
Is quite adept at archery, along with his swordsmanship, but he tends to stay away from it; the act bringing up too many memories that he’d rather keep buried. It makes his life easier and the weight on his shoulders that much easier to bear.
His mother is still very much alive but his father has been dead for around three centuries at this point— barely a blip to an elf, meaning his mother can still be seen garbed in black.
His crown is crafted from the metal of his late father’s sword — something that had been requested of him.
Typically keeps to himself, but you’ll see him be surrounded by a varying about of courtesans/diplomats during the day— his carefully constructed mask hiding how much he wished to be anywhere else.
Larak:
Has a war horse that he’s had with him ever since he earned his sword— a carnivorous beast known as Akasha.
Despite what his appearance may showcase, Larak has a deep love for rabbits/bunnies and small insects like butterflies. He finds them to have a true warriors spirit; to be able to survive in a world like this one.
He has tattoos along both of his arms— the one on his right being his coming of age tattoo that’s made around the injury he acquired while on the hunt. The one on his left is one made for the people he’s lost.
Typically carries a great sword or a battle axe— preferring two-handed weaponry as it’s the easiest for him to wield.
Enjoys warm weather— as it reminds him of his home back in the Infernal Plains.
Calypso:
When she’s out of her human form— Calypso grows razor sharp teeth, claws, and fins appear on her forearm (along with gills on her neck). All of the hallmarks of a poignant underwater predator.
Can stomach surface food but prefers fish, crustacean, kelp, and sea birds over anything else— sirens being mainly carnivorous (although they do eat plants at times). She does enjoy chocolate though.
Even when she’s in her human form she can breathe underwater; a fact that she uses to go on hunts for longer periods of time. Her enhanced eyesight underwater helping that a great deal too.
You’ll sometimes find flecks of old scale left behind— as they, like all skin, replace itself whenever they die. Calypso typically tries to keep them moisturized as much as possible in order to abate any of the itchiness it can cause.
Is deathly afraid of horses. She doesn’t like them, but she finds sharks and krakens absolutely adorable. The big puppies of the sea.
Shanaera:
Has trained in a variety of different fields to better ensure the safety of Vela’thian and her king— she takes her job seriously, it’s one of the things that brings her the greatest joy in life.
Has three birds of prey that typically hang around her— barring the various other birds she uses for her spies messages— due to them bonding with her: a raven, an owl, and an eagle (respectively).
Speaks a variety of languages, and their varying dialects, due to the nature of her work and needing to understand any and all messages that come through.
Does the more unsavory work for Vela’thian that Daeron wishes didn’t have to occur, but would be foolish to believe that it’s not a necessity.
Has a deep love for reading— you’d be able to find her spending time with the library (if she’s not in her tower) next to a crackling hearth.
Fáelán:
Cares for you a great deal. They don’t have a family to speak of, which means that you’ve sort of become their family. They’d do anything for you.
Due to their heritage, extreme levels of cold/ice don’t truly bother them but extreme heat can be a bit of an issue for them. It’s not something that they truly like, but they’d be able to persevere.
Proudly announced that they were going to be your Knight, your loyal guard, the third day after you met them, and they’ve been training for it ever since.
Typically doesn’t eat meat that often— barring venison. As it rarely ever sits well within their stomach.
Would go the ends of the world if you asked them to.
Valerian:
Their draconic form is bigger than what’s typical for a draconian. Something that made them be deemed as the brightest among their siblings… Until, of course, certain events happened that ruined it.
A bit of a sadist, not gonna lie… Not in a physical abuse kind of way… More in a, I’m going to bite you and potentially draw blood sort of way during sex.
Has a presence that can command a room, a voice that never has to be raised to be heard, which has been very useful to them for a long time. It’s something that’s garnered attention from a large amount of people. You’re the first person that’s ever truly caught their attention though. Whether that’s a bad or good thing? Only time will tell.
Has three little dragons that stay perched on their shoulder, or somewhere nearby, that they absolutely adore. Would kill anyone that tried to hurt their babies.
Is immune to fire completely due to their heritage… Though they don’t typically enjoy warmer weather. As it reminds them too much of a home they’ll probably never be allowed to go back to.

The Pirate and the Siren
Chayanne loved the ocean, loved the feeling of the wind blowing in his hair, the taste of the salty air, and the sound of the waves splashing against the ship's side.
Out here, in the ocean, he felt free. There was nothing holding him back. The waters were HIS domain, his home.
Nothing could drive Chayanne out of the sea. Not the deathly battles, the terrible storms, or even the monsters that lurked in the water down below. From krakens to leviathans the ocean harbored dangerous creatures. Some beings even seemed harmless, like the one currently under the waves.
The ship is not moving, it’s offshore of an island as the rest of the crew went out to gather some supplies. Chayanne stayed behind on the ship, leaning against the rail lost to the sounds of the water below. His eyes are closed, taking in every bit of the calm serene ocean.
Two slitted eyes peak above the water to the lone pirate on the boat. Mischief laced in the small smirk they display. The creature dunks back below water, swimming up to the ladder on the side of the boat.
Their scaley hands grab onto the ropes, tugging harshly making sure it is secured. They smile. Sharp teeth peek out of their mouth, a small hiss of happiness escapes as they hull themselves up into one of the safety boats.
The pirate above them is still unmoving, eyes still closed and unaware of the commotion below him.
The creature picks themselves up by the ship's edge, head peeking through the bottom of the rails. They reach for his feet, but before their claws could swipe at him he is jumping over the railing and onto the safety boat as well.
Chayanne takes out his sword and points it directly at the creature's head, “Didn’t think I could hear you?”
Below his weapon was one of the most dangerous creatures Chayanne thinks you would ever find at sea. A beautiful magical being that can fog your mind and entrance you. It was almost impossible to fight off a being like this, one that could haunt your memories, lure, and bait you. A being half human half fish. Shiny shimmery scales decorated their body from head to tail fin. They were ruthless as much as they were astounding. A siren, one song and Chayanne would be done for.
This one was smaller than most, a kid around Chayanne’s age. She had dark black hair and white and purple scales. A necklace with a red flower sat on her chest and a few bits of purple coral sprouted on top of her head below her gills. She looked like she was wearing a crown, and she also looked angry.
With one swipe she swished her tail and sent Chayanne flying off the boat into the water below. The siren growled and peeked over the boat into the water where the young pirate had fallen.
A big gasp and a cough came out of him as Chayanne broke through the surface, “That was mean.”
The siren rolled her eyes, “Oh shut up you pointed a sword at me first.”
“Because you tried sneaking up on me!”
“Yeah and I was doing a great job wasn’t I?” The siren flashed her teeth with a wicked smile.
“Sure you were.”
“What’s that supposed to mean??” She huffs and crosses her arms, cheeks puffing out.
Chayanne giggled, “I missed you Tallulah.”
She rolls her eyes.
“Now can you please help me up and get off the boat? The others are going to be back soon.”
“That’s no way to treat your little sister Chay. Besides, I can take care of myself.”
He sighs, “I know you can, I’m worried about them.”
She laughs, “Hust one little song? Pleaaaaseee.”
“Lullah!” He scolds.
“Fine! You’re lucky I love you.” She gives a half hearted side eye.
“Yeah yeah whatever, love you too. Now go, I’ll meet you at the cove as always okay? Just give me a day to get some things ready.”
“Okay okay I’ll meet you there, see you hermanito!”
“See ya!”
The siren jumps down into the water and waves to her older brother. One blink and she’s gone into the water below.
Chayanne smiles down at his wrist, a bracelet with a red flower as a charm. Tallulah had given it to him a long time ago, when they first had crossed paths. He was human, she was a siren, and yet they loved and cared for each other as any regular siblings would. The sea was their home.
He should probably get out of it though.

I wonder if you’ll do more with the Encanto giant siren au?
INDEED I CAN AND I WILL❗❗ I'm hoping to actually write a oneshot or two using this but. Some info??? World building??? Idk
So like. Guppies are affected by lunar cycles, but most the New and Full moons. Every other day, they're fine, running around and getying on people nerves, being cute, you get the gist.
So first, new moons. First of all, they lose all of their siren features. They basically look like slightly taller human children. The only way you could know is by looking at where their gills used to be; but it's quitr painful because they close up, and half the time they don't let anyone touch them. The only person they will let touch them is their mother or father. Sometimes an elder, and really only Alma, because of how gentle she is with them.
At this stage, they're very week. And typically, this last for about a few days, any longer and something is seriously wrong. Most of the time, they aren't even hungry anymore, and just sleep in their shells all day. They're taken to the Grotto and specially assigned caretakers care for them until they're ready to go back to their families.
Ok so. The full moon. Literally the complete opposite. They are. Crazy. Like actually 😭 they are hungrier than before, and are borderline desperate for food. It's very hard to get them into their shells, and even if someone does, they will break their shell. The risk is too high, and good shells are hard to come by. So, they do the only thing that seems logical. They lock them up.
Ok, lock up is a gross exaggeration 💀💀 but they do like?? Hide them away or something. Keep them away from the surface. It’s too dangerous for them to do that, especially after the first two incidents 😭 but basically they have to lure the guppies to the trenches. Deep sea sirens watch over them, and they they put into a giant trench. Empty, virtually uninhabited. Guppies basically get put down there, and aren’t allowed to leave till after the moon passes lmao. They are fed, damn near constantly. Mostly giant creatures, like orcas and krakens. Neither stand a chance against the guppies, they're like phiranas 😭😭
Tumblr media
This is all I got 😭😭 hopefully I'll have more later, but I hope it works 🥸🥸 feel free to ask more about this au, I need an excuse to world build 😭

🫧HOUSE OF WAX | MERMAID AU | SERIES|🫧
A/N:Their is still no title, and I don’t wanna just call it the little mermaid, so this will be the title for now! And yes, you’re apart of the royal family
Warnings:None
Genre:Fluff
Tumblr media
Prologue:
A large shipped sailed over the briny depths, a wooden giant, carrying hundreds of men. The Captain, Gunther, and his companions. Bo, a skilled fisherman, famous for discovering countless of fish, even a close relative of the kraken. Even though it was probably untrue, he was the professional and many people believed it. The third, Bo’s little brother Lester, was a poor farmer, who lived on the outside of France. He had a wife and a few kids, and who merely survived on what few animals he had, as well as the vegetables and fruit his wife worked on that weren’t rotten.
Lester and Bo relied heavily upon Bo’s twin and Lester’s older brother, Vincent. A famous artist that owned a huge museum in Paris, and an estate on a nearby island. He was his brothers only source of income, when waters were frozen over with Crystal water, or the orange trees and chilled air stopped food from growing. The ship was littered with many other crew mates, ones that the heads didn’t care to remember, some even went hungry if they weren’t memorable. The ship had been sailing for a while, Bo was currently managing the net, Lester was cooking in the canteen, and Vincent was drinking with the captain in his study. A black sheet fell over the merfolk and the people on the top of the sea, encouraging everyone to eat dinner and go to bed. The anchor was dropped, and dug into the sand, coming close to a coral reef
————————
You were exploring the same coral reef, you followed the ship for a while, the humans truly fascinated you, their way of life seemed so relaxing, not having to deal with huge squids and sharks. They got to walk on two.. fleshy sticks..legs? You wanted to be one of them, but you knew that if your family found out you went against their orders, you’d be exiled, you had to come up with a plan, but for now, you would only admire from afar. The anchor fell from the sky, almost crushing you, you had to swim out of the way as fast as possible, so you or your tail wouldn’t be crushed under its weight. The coral reef was pretty much destroyed, broken coral floating around, as the ship stilled for the night. You got an idea, a dumb one of course, but an idea nonetheless, you swam up to the surface, wanting to look at the ship. You swam up as fast as possible, your tail flapping behind you, as you reached the surface.
You couldn’t stay up there for long, knowing your gills wouldn’t allow it, so you stopped at a rock, allowing you easy access to the ocean, you laid yourself on it, watching the ship. Some of the men were still awake, probably drinking, while everyone else was in the sleeping quarters. Vincent however, was sat on the bow of the ship, a sketchbook and pencil firmly clasped in his strong hands, and his long legs dangled over the sides. His raven hair was in a tight braid that fell down his back, a small rope secured it, as he was drawing on the paper. He looked beautiful in the moonlight, the bright stars enhanced his dark red scaring.
“Vincent” a crewman yelled, holding a harpoon over his shoulder. The man walked closer to Vincent, and because of the harpoon, you went back into the ocean. The men both noticed the splashing water by the rocks, but believed it to just be a manatee or something. They decided that it was time to go to bed, and hurried to the sleeping quarters, while you were heading back to the castle, you were hoping that your dad wasn’t up, or your sisters. Once you were finally back, you took a moment to catch your breath, leaning against a pole in the castle. Once you weren’t tired, you headed up to your bedroom. The bedroom includes a giant shell as a bed, with a full set of bedding, and a lavender blanket, and matching pillows. There was also a vanity sat in the corner, and a nightstand next to your bed. You pulled your blanket and sheets back, and climbed under, and let your head fall upon the soft pillows.
You woke up pretty early, from your father standing at your door with a bell. “Wake up Y/N, breakfast is ready.” He said, ringing the silver bell. You woke up from the loud ringing, and sat up, stretching. “I’m up, and thank you for making breakfast” you told him, getting up to adjust your bed, and swimming past him. You met your sisters downstairs in the dining hall, who were already busy eating, seemed to be shrimp and octopus. You found your seat and followed suit, you weren’t really focused on breakfast, though. You were to entranced on the man you saw last night, how badly you wanted to play with his long hair, or use his pecs as a pillow. The sister next to you started snapping to get your attention. “Y/N, eat your food, the hunters worked really hard to get it”, S/1 told you, annoyed at you. “Ok, I apologize. I just saw a man last night, and I can’t stop thinking about him.” You replied, you were sure their were love hearts in your eyes, as you began to chew on a tentacle. “Who’s the lucky man?” S/2 replied, jokingly raising her eyebrows, as most of the sisters were cleaning up. “I don’t know his name, but he’s a human I think” you said dreamily, causing both of your sisters to choke on their food. “Girls, is everything alright over here?” Your father appeared from behind you, his hand resting on your sisters head. Once sister gave a thumbs up, while she was downing her drink. “Everything’s alright father, don’t worry” you said, feeling your heart drop.
“Alright, but please follow me to my chair, I need to talk to you.” He told you, as he swam to the throne room. You followed behind him, as he sat in his chair. You sat on the chair closest to him, so you could hear what he says. He loudly cleared his throat, before he began speaking. “Y/N, how’d you meet this human?” He asked you, his brows furrowed. “You heard?” You replied, anxious. “Of course I did, now answer the question” he told you. “I went to surface, and saw a ship.” You said, fidgeting with your fingers, as an angry expression tainted his face. “I told you that you were forbidden from going to the surface, and you still go. Do you not know how tiring that is?” He said angrily. “I’ll have Sebastian watch over you, to make sure you don’t go anywhere near that man or the surface again, do you understand?”, you nodded in agreement, as you saw Sebastian swim as fast as possible. He landed on your shoulder, noticing your fathers look. “I came as soon as I heard my name..oh” he knew what was going on, and wasn’t ready to deal with it, but he knew it was his job. “Sebastian, can you please watch over them, they’re a bit rambunctious.” Your father said, and Sebastian reluctantly agreed. “Alright your majesty, I got her in between my claws” he joked, a raspy laugh leaving his mouth. “Y/N, please follow me?” He asked you, and you agreed.
You followed him to your bedroom, where you both sat on your bed, with a golden brush in his big claw. He sat atop your head, brushing your locks, while he allowed you to speak. “Y/N, you mind telling me what was going on?” He asked you, detangling your hair. “I saw a very beautiful man, he had long hair” you said quietly, causing Sebastian to squeal “Who is he?” He asked, excitedly. “He’s a human” you said ashamed. “Oh child, why do you have to be so difficult, theirs plenty of merfolk desperate to marry you” he said, trying to be convincing. “But I don’t want them, I want him” you said. “You don’t even know his name child” he told you. “I’ll learn it than” you said, swimming off, causing him and the brush to fall off your head.

The Mermaid Ask Game seems fun 👀 How about: 5 3 9?
Hi Space Rabbit! Interesting combination, I’ll have a go at it! Thanks for requesting this, here you go!
From This Ask Game
Whumpee had really done it this time. They had angered some sea witch and now look at them- out in the open water, with a tail instead of legs, webbed ears, gills around their neck, and scales everywhere. They didn’t know how to get home from here, and they definitely didn’t know how they were going to get to their house without legs.
A ship passing by nearly hit Whumpee head on. They just managed to avoid being keel-hauled- thank goodness the tail made them a fast swimmer at least.
“Look out, men! A sea monster!”
A sea monster!? Whumpee thought, turning frantically in the water, Where!?
A net tossed over their head answered the question.
Oh. Right.
“Now hang on a minute!” Whumpee called up at the frightened sailors.
“It speaks!”
“It’s got fangs the size of me fingers!”
Whumpee felt their teeth with their tongue. OW! They tasted copper in their mouth. They must look pretty scary.
The sailors started hauling the net up. Whumpee started thrashing and struggling, which only served to tangle them up more.
“Come on guys!” Whumpee pleaded, “do I look like I eat people!? Let me go!”
Their pleas fell on deaf ears as they tumbled on deck. They could barely move at all they were so tightly enmeshed in the net.
“It’s got a great fish’s tail.” “Frightful bad luck to have a sea monster on board, isn’t it?”
“Should we cook it?”
“No!” Whumpee protested at that last comment.
The captain strode up to them, crouching down. They felt Whumpee’s scales with a calloused hand.
“What are you?” they whispered in shock.
“Oh for the love of- what does it look like!?” Whumpee snapped, “I’m just trying to get home! So I’m half fish now, it’s not like I’m some deep sea kraken or something! If you’re not going to let me go, at leasr get me out of this stupid net!”
Whumpee wriggled a little more for emphasis.
“Men,” the captain said, “what we have here is a mer. Very dangerous creatures, they are.”
Whumpee rolled their eyes.
“They’ll say anything to deceive you, be mindful of them. We can’t just let them go, or they’d lure some poor soul to their demise. But their scales… their scales might fetch us a pretty penny.”
Whumpee’s eyes widened.
“Take it down to the brig,” the captain said, “prepare a tub of water. I don’t want it dying on us.”
Whumpee groaned in exasperation. It was gonna take forever to get home now.

This AU was inspired by @rubydoowhereru RGTK of Monsterverse Ruby Gillman. So, I decided to practise my writing with RGTK that will feature some conruby, Meraken, and just a few short stories.
I wrote a one-shot on how Ruby would appear in Godzilla 2014, which I sent to Rubydoo in the form of an ask.
Now, here's an interesting idea: "What if Ruby met Gojira instead of Grandmamah?"
_________________________________________
Ruby should have listened to her Uncle's warning about the peculiar electric blue water current that he advised her to avoid during their journey to visit her grandmother. She had mistakenly assumed that it would propel her to her destination much faster, but that assumption proved false.
Now, Ruby found herself immersed in a pitch black void, barely able to make out the moonlight.
She felt as if she had entered the twilight zone.
Scanning her surroundings, she spotted an ancient temple in ruins. A few skeletal remains of monstrous creatures with sharp dorsal plates caught her attention.
Believing that this must be where her grandmother resided, Ruby swam towards the temple's entrance. Along the way, she caught glimpses of peculiar marine iguana-like sea monsters, standing around 6'5ft, with two large and pointed dorsal plates. Nervously, she waved at them, and in response, some of the creatures emitted a bright flash from their dorsal plates, as if greeting her.
Following a bright orange light, Ruby found herself inside a vast chamber filled with waterfalls and small pools of lava. A grand staircase led up to a large platform, but whatever lay on top remained hidden from view. The only visible aspect was the presence of jagged, sharp dorsal plates, reminiscent of trees or some other unknown entity.
Curiosity piqued, Ruby cautiously emerged from the water and ascended the staircase to gain a better perspective on the mysterious sight before her. However, to her confusion, she discovered that the platform was empty - nothing stood atop it.
"I knew that pulse belonged to you," a gruff voice declared, startling Ruby. She turned around, only to gasp in shock at the immense size of the person who had spoken.
His face possessed a square shape, while his neck appeared broad with gills adorning its sides. His eyes emitted a faint yellow glow, and his mouth housed a staggering total of 60 teeth, though they were not perfectly aligned. Separate nostrils adorned opposite sides of his snout.
His head and neck inclined slightly forward, and in proportion to his body, the head seemed relatively smaller. The creature bore dorsal fins that resembled the shape of maple leaves, albeit straighter and significantly sharper.
White-clawed fingers embellished his slim, muscular arms, while his feet resembled those of an elephant or sauropod, boasting larger curved claws with noticeable space between each toe. His crocodile-like skin was rough and tinged with a shade of blackish color. Although his body shared a slender resemblance to Ruby's giant Kraken frame, he appeared more robust, suggesting a build suitable for both speed and combat. His tail, resembling a baryonx's tail but with a tampered rounded tip.
Oh and cute little pointed ears!
Ruby instinctively raises her hands in fear as the imposing gaze of the larger monster meets her. However, to her surprise, he lets out a chuckle. "You look just like Agatha! Only purple instead of pink," the monster exclaims. Confused, Ruby gazes at him, prompting him to realize his nonsense and attempt to clarify.
Raising a closed, clawed hand and coughing into it, he introduces himself with a broad, toothy smile. "I am Gojira! King of Monsters, Warlord of Balance, Lord of the Sea, and so on! And, of course, you can call me your GRANDPOPPY!" As these words escape his lips, Ruby's eyes widen as everything clicks into place.
Instead of meeting her grandmother, she has encountered her grandfather.

RAMBLE TIME! not a serious post whatsoever
my headmate, Astophilith/Astro, is a Kraken Cat. half octopus, half kitty. he loves the sea and sea creatures and when he fronted we all knew he would fixate on the ocean in some way
its mermaids. its mermaids and their potential biology, this is what he has determined:
mermaids are pale. pale pale pale. assuming they have human skin, no light gets down into the ocean so they dont need melanin to protect them from the sun
mermaids are FAT! theyre plus sized. if you look at any sea mammal (whales, dolphins, walruses, seals) they are fat they have tons of blubber to keep them warm in those freezing ocean temps
pupils are HUGE! there is no light down there, their pupils are either massive or their entire eye is pupil
meemaid hair is not the same as human hair, the damage from the salt water would be BAD bad itd be frizzy and horrible. they are either: bald (lots of hair slows swimming down)(competitive swimmers wear swim caps and shave off ALL hair on their body), they have octopus/squid tentacle hair like medusa or the inklings from splatoon, they have hair that functions like cat whiskers (cats whiskers can sense things, if mermaid hair is super long they could use it to sense when something is behind them. useful due to no light down there), or they have jellyfish tentacle hair (stings and catches pray for them, also good reason for how long it is)
if we go with the jellyfish tentacle hair thing, their hands and forearms, shoulders, back, most of their body would be scales. like hard hard scales to resist the stinging of their own hair.
they have webbing between their fingers (like duck feet) to help them swim
if mermaids *are* mammals (and therefore chonky), theyd need some sort of thing like turtles where their nostrils close up so they dont get water in their lungs. i personallt love the concept of mermaids with human mammal lungs *and* gills. im thinking that the way this would function is that underwater their nostrils close up and stop taking in above water oxygen, their gills would have some sort of function where between lung and gill the H2O stops being H2O and is converted into water and the water part just goes back to the ocean (like through the skin or through the mouth, maybe back out through the gills the way human lungs take in oxygen and push out carbon dioxide. have not worked that out yet). above water im thinking that their gills close up and they revert to using their nostrils and take in oxygen etc etc
obviously mermaids are fantasy creatures and therefore not real so you do you! these are i guess just headcanons that made me and astro go Oooooooo and i wanted to share them
again do whatever you want with mermaids design them however, this is just speaking on a more scientific level (or as scientific you could get with fantasy creatures)
anyone is free to reblog and add onto this or (politely) correct me (i wont reply to aggression or anything mean. this is for fun.)
if anyone takes inspo from these ideas for mermaid art please show us we would LOVE to see! theres no need for credit either, we saw some headcanons a few years ago and simply expanded on them and turned them into our own thing :)

Siren's Treasure
Alright, so, I've got about three prompts of my Mermay list finished. I'll link the other parts as I upload them, but I'm starting with this first one.
As promised, this is a Gravity Falls fic, Sea Grunks style.
Siren!OcXFord and Stan Pines (I'm greedy, leave me alone.)
Rated M just in case
Part two is here
Chapter 1
Bottle
It’s well known that the sound of the sea can be calming. Some have even said it’s healing. One thing Ford was sure of was that he’d always found comfort in large bodies of water and so did Stanley.
Sure, the sea came with its own perils but after traversing the multiverse and surviving Weirdmageddon, handling the dangers of sailing around the world seemed small in comparison.
Still, the strange shape he’d been catching glimpses of in the water bothered him. Whatever it was had been tailing them for several weeks. He’d mentioned it to Stan who dismissed it with a shrug.
“I dunno how to tell you this, Poindexter, but it’s the ocean. There’s fish in the ocean.”
Ford wasn’t so sure, but he put it at the back of his mind. It couldn’t be more dangerous than the kraken they’d fought off a few months back-
“Hey, Sixer, any idea on when we’ll find some actual treasure?” Stanley griped as he popped open a bottle, casting his eyes over to his fishing line, which had been sitting without a bite for over an hour.
Ford grunted in reply.
“If you hadn’t acted so recklessly in Ireland, we could have had some real leprechaun gold!”
“You and I both know they were never gonna just give us their treasure!”
Ford rolled his eyes as Stan went on, and he turned his gaze back to the waters. His brow furrowed as he noticed movement. Was it their tag-along?
It was fairly big, whatever it was. A seal maybe? That would explain why Stan hadn’t hooked any fish-
“-And besides, treasure is just one half of what we’ve been missing! We still haven’t seen any babes!” Stan drank the last of his soda and made to throw the bottle overboard.
“You shouldn’t do that.” Ford commented, almost absently as he eyed the water.
“What, and not pay tribute to Glass Shards?” Stan shot back as he hucked the bottle overboard. “I know you’re still a nerd when it comes to women, but c’mon-”
“That’s not true! Look, we could try hitting up some coastal towns on our way back south.” Ford tried placating his twin.
Stan raised a brow.
“Do I look like I’m getting any younger-”
A loud clatter interrupted him. The bottle Stan had thrown overboard bounded and rolled along the deck, coming to rest at his feet.
“...What the hell?” Stan bent and picked up the partially empty bottle, which now held some sea water.
The twins glanced at each other before looking at the water. But there was nothing there.
Stan chucked the bottle again, more aggressively this time.
It landed with a splash and they watched tensely as it sank out of sight. Nothing happened, and they both relaxed after a few minutes. Ford flinched as Stan broke the silence loudly.
“As I was saying- OW!”
The bottle was thrown right back, hitting him square between his shoulder blades this time.
“Son of a bitch! Ford, quit playing around!” Stan swore as he whipped back around, temper flaring with his confusion.
“It’s not me!”  Ford was craning his neck, and he pointed excitedly.
“Look! There!”
Stan turned, squinting at the water.
She was so easy to miss. Her hair was dark and gray-green like the waves around her, and the strange, rippling patterns on her skin blended with the rays of the sun bouncing off the water. The face that peered at them from the water could have easily been mistaken for a human if not for the fins that poked from her hair and the gills along her neck.
They caught this in a glimpse as she ducked back down out of sight.
“Mermaid?” Stan choked in a hopeful tone.
“Close, but I don’t believe so.” Ford replied, running to the other side, looking for another sign of her. He could see her shape, but she wouldn’t breach the surface again.
“Give me that-” He snatched the bottle from Stan and threw it overboard, waiting.
He saw the bottle bob and half-sink before it was grabbed by a webbed hand. She rose back up and tossed the bottle back at him. Ford caught it with some ease, adjusting his glasses with his other hand as he studied her.
She rose up a little higher from the waves, meeting his gaze with equal curiosity and he noted her serrated teeth, the sharp ridges on her brow bones, and most importantly, the dorsal fin on her back-
“Greetings!” He called out to her, pulling out his notepad and flipping to a blank page. “What’s your name-”
She ducked down out of sight and Ford sighed in frustration.
“Heh, still not too lucky with the ladies, I see.” Stanley guffawed, leaning over the railing as he searched for another sighting of her.
“For your information, I dated a siren back in Gravity Falls!”
“Oh yeah? Did she know that’s what you were doing?”
“What do you mean, of course she- Stan, that’s deplorable!”
“Hey, hey, it’s not my fault you’re prone to creepy behavior-”
“I AM NOT- That’s not important right now! You realize what this means right?” Ford groaned as he gestured to the water. “The thing I’ve been seeing has to be that siren! Which means she’s been following us for the past couple of weeks!”
“I knew I had a magnetic personality, but I didn’t realize it was so strong!” Stan chuckled. Ford gave him a sour expression.
“I sincerely doubt you’re the reason she’s been hanging around.”
“Hey, don’t be jealous!”
“The only thing you attract is trouble!”
“Like you’re any different, Mr. Let-Me-Poke-This-Anomaly-With-A-Stick-And-See-What-Happens!”
“That was one time!”
“What do you-No it wasn’t!”
The two continued to bicker, and their voices carried across the water. Neither of them noticed the Siren poke her head back above the water as she watched and listened.
She smiled and her dagger-like teeth glinted in the sunlight before she ducked back down beneath the surface.
