hiya! i love your game and the richness of your characters <3 are you still answering asks about ros from idle hands and at the threshold? if not, idk if you’ve ever answered this before, but how do you make your characters feel so… i guess distinct is the word? 😅 like they all feel like real, dynamic people i could go on a modern fantasy road trip with!

I am still answering asks about the Idle Hands characters, yes! and some about At the Threshold, but it's still a ways out from being actively worked on so I'm a bit more selective about questions about them until I flesh the characters and story out a little more

and thank you, I love to hear that my characters feel real and distinct! 😊 figuring out a character's voice is one of my favorite things to do. I don't know if it's just how my brain works, but I can hear them speaking very clearly when I'm writing, almost like I'm in the room listening to their conversation. (especially pre-established characters from other media when writing fanfic; finding my own characters' voices can be a bit more challenging) a lot of the time, dialogue for a scene is the first thing that comes to me, and I go back and fill in action, scenery, and internal monologue later

I have been known to talk to myself when I'm working, to make sure the way characters talk sounds natural when spoken out loud 😅 my spouse and daughter call it "Voices Time" and leave me alone to let me rant at myself in peace

The thing is public transport requires you to exist in a space with others and you do have to be okay with people talking on the phone, being in your space, publicly displaying affection, etc. but also get headphones. Like even before phones nobody wanted to hear whatever the hell ur listening to. Why do you think Spock choked that guy on the bus with the boom box in Star Trek the one with the whales

Listening to a video game talk in the background of my work and like... were smartphones already so big in 2013? As in, widely adopted to the point of high schoolers bringing them to school? Was that an America/Western Europe thing? I know I have memory issues and 2013 just so happens to be the time that I have trouble remembering but... really? 2013? Was that a thing? Maybe it was and I just can't recall? Uhhh?

I know me not having a smartphone in like 2015 was weird, to the point where I was the 'retro tech' guy back near the end of middle school but... uh. I'm a little confused.

#the point the speaker made was the one I heard many times before which is that the timing of the 3DS and PS Vita releases was unfortunate #since smartphones came about and took over most of the casual market that the DS thrived in #but then he said '2013' and it hit me like a brick #which... I'm surprised it didn't hit me earlier #considering that both of these handhelds released in 2011 #and the Vita died like... so freaking quickly #while the 3DS was struggling for a little while there #I guess I have problems with placing all that stuff on the timeline #I got my 3DS in like... 2015 I think? it was a middle school graduation gift #and I know that back then I used my 3DS to do the things that other people did with their smartphones #(connecting to Wi-Fi on the go or taking pictures or watching YouTube)#(or playing games obviously)#I got my smartphone in 2016 but I still brought both to school considerably often #and now I'm wondering just how silly it might've looked to those rich kid classmates of mine lol #(the only people that brought it up was the guy who went to middle school with me and the guy I ended up being friends with for a while)#(oh and the one guy who knew me from grade school and asked to borrow my 3DS charger once 'cause he found a DSi)#(and wanted to know if it actually worked)#anyways sorry rant over

#i just think yuta plays takashi kokubo's music bc it helps him sleep/have a peaceful time #i really tried to nail the average japanese self-help book cover vibe lol i hope i did #ive drawn toge reading skip to loafer before so naturally he also reads hirayasumi #which i highly recommend for slice of life enjoyers by the way #kinda regret drawing toge's cursed speaker bc i think i could have drawn something else that showed his personality more #well ill say it here #it would have been a personal planner/journal plastered with splatoon and panda stickers #the stickers are slipped in between the cover and a protective sleeve he does not stick them directly onto the planner itself #it must be said #ive also talked about this before in another artwork but toge takes his stationary very seriously #the first years have observed this and actually chipped in to get a expensive gift card from his favorite stationary store for his bday #they also know which store because they all go on shopping trips ! and that's canon #as you can see i have a lot to say about this and i love it. brainrot is a wonderful thing #in contrast to toge enjoying cooking at home maki is a restaurant/cafe connoisseur #she enjoys eating toge's food too but really finds joy in eating out and exploring all the food tokyo has to offer. mostly unhealthy food #that's why yuta looks out for chances to get food coupons and brochures about new eateries in the city #a thoughtful person to his friends #he's always thinking of them #ok im done for now but i have more to say. will continue in another post lol #thank you for reading !#ottoge #inuokko #inumaki toge #inumaki #okkotsu yuuta #okkotsu yuta #yuuta #jjk #jujutsu kaisen #art

John Calvin’s Writings and Asexuality?

The context here is that I don’t know all that much about John Calvin specifically, and I’m also trying to be a good history student and not project onto the past (and these have been translated into English, so something might have gotten lost)….but reading about Calvin’s concept of ‘continence’ is really making me think about asexuality & it’s not like there’s very much older ace history out there - I’ll take what I can get. So here’s some sections from his ‘Institutes of the Christian Religion’ (published in Latin in 1536).

What Is Continence?

According to the OED (a wonderful source if you’re looking for meanings of old English words and in what periods those definitions applied):

Now, this is the part where the fact it’s translated feels particularly important, since the use of ‘continence’ by the translators may very well just be the closest word an English speaker might understand. So it’s probably going to be more useful to look at how Calvin talks about it.

Characteristics of 'Continence' described by Calvin:

It’s easy for people with this ‘gift’ to avoid sex in a way it isn’t for everyone else

2. It’s limited to a few people

3. It isn’t just a choice not to have sex, it’s an absence of desire

4. It can come & go for some people, for some it is permanent (this is part of his reasoning for why permanent vows of celibacy are a bad idea)

So...yeah? It somehow doesn't feel like Calvin would be all that surprised by the concept of asexuality. Although, for him, ‘continence’ is all framed as a gift from God enabling someone to be more committed to worship. So I suppose according to Calvin I’m wasting a special gift from God? Oopsie.
