"Prisoners' Present To Revd. C. Ladner," The Inland Sentinel (Kamloops). December 29, 1913. Page 1. ---- (Rev. G. O. Fallis, B.D.) Do you believe in total depravity? There are some of us who have long since learned that the old doctrine is not true in practical life. It may be a good theological term but even it is covered with dust. If there be a total depravity in a theological sense, is there not at least a partial divinity in an ideal sense? Do not men and wofhen down in the muck of desire have moments of aspiration? Read the following: "We the prisoners of, the Kamloops jail wish to express our thanks for your kind- ness, temporally as well as spiritually, especially at this time of year when the Angel brought the message of Peace on Earth, good will toward men. It brings to our minds the many, many times you have come to the jail through sunshine and shower to bring a message of cheer to us. Now in wishing you a Merry Christmas please accept this little token of our appreciation."

This letter accompanying a silver muffineer was signed "The prisoners, Kamloops jail," and addressed to the Rev. Charles Ladner. It plainly shows three things: First, that Mr. Ladner is finding the point of contact with the moral side of the prisoners' lives; secondly, that there still remains in the prisoners remnants of divinity "though spotted, sullied and bespoiled, still divine"; and lastly that kindness bestowed on any one is worth while, and not to be repented of. The modern movement of jail reform is based on trust. Mr. Ladner goes still farther and bestows a real, true, wise, fatherly, sage-like love to them all. The city at large will all wish that Mr. Ladner will be long spared to carry on his work of mercy, relief and brotherly love.
