Hello!!! I hope everyone is doing wonderful, and having a happy, fulfilling week, in whatever way that may be!!! My life has been quite busy recently, and will be for a while, so I wanted to come on here to deliver a short update. I don’t want to and do not intend to stop writing, but my longer series will be put on the back burner for a bit- heart of glass, Carmen, stepbrother Javi etc, and I’ll be working on them when I am able. But I still want to post shorter pieces for you to read! If you have any ideas for any of my AUs- off to the races, video games, Carmen, stepbrother Javi, GGCYD etc- please feel free to drop them in my inbox!! I will be working on little drabbles, ficlets and other short pieces. I might also be slow to post and not as active for a bit.

God’s Gonna Cut You Down

Bilbo Baggins, a forty year old hacker-slash-bookshop proprietor, found some measure of relief when he found his way back to his parents’ countryside estate in the wake of a sudden sweeping viral apocalypse. However, in Bag End he finds only ghosts, and he soon realizes that relief is a far cry from fulfillment or closure. Enter a surprise visit from his mother’s attorney and his ragtag group of foreigners–one led by an honest-to-God king (who may or may not be exactly Bilbo’s type). According to Gandalf, they may somehow have the solution to Europe’s current pesky zombie problem. For his and the world’s sake, Bilbo can only hope. [An epic-length modern AU retelling of the Hobbit with motorcycles, medium-to-slow-burn romance, and zombies. Yeah, I know.]

GGCYD Character Playlists -- New and Improved!

Got manic for a bit and revamped/remade a bunch of playlists lol !! Nobody cares but me but it was fun. Will probably revise Bilbo's soon, and also make one for Ori and maybe Gandalf? The former so I can maybe dip my toes into kpop and the latter so I can truly wild out with my love for OG psychadelica and basically everything that came out of Laurel Canyon in the 60s and 70s. We'll see lmfao.

A Young Lion's Soundtrack to the Apocalypse - 57 songs, 3hr 54min.

Prince Fili Viliyevich Dzhemilev Durinul, 21 y/o heir apparent to the broken throne of Erebor, presents a number of tunes to express gender, get through hard times, and crash your motorcycle to. Dedicated to all the elder brothers of the world who were forced to grow up too fast. And also to catboys.

Heavy in haunted synth, indietronica, and nu-folk, with some heavier prog, punk, and acid/witch house thrown in there for good measure. The playlist of a guy who is absolutely chill and friendly to the point of enigmatic on the outside but has the constant internal monologue of, “Aren’t you tired of being nice? Don’t you just want to go Ape Shit?”

Kiss With a Crossbow - 63 songs, 3hr 41 min.

Prince Kili Viliyevich's power playlist for teenage archers who are full of a very specific type of repressed rage. Just steady drip of constant bangers to get through the day. Also, if asked, he'll say that West Coast hip hop is superior to East Coast, but also, why discriminate?

A love letter to EDM, experimental hyperpop, 90s hip-hop, hot girl rappers, and late aughts radio bangers. May also have a unexpected surprises scattered here and there as well. Look, his brain is the equivalent of a hamster on a wheel except the hamster is just mainlining Bang energy (Frose Rose flavor) and if the ambiance falls below 100 bpm he dies.

Not So English Beat - 55 songs, 3hr 23min.

Bops by Bofur. Born 1981 in East Berlin to an Ereborean mother and a half-Irish father, he grew up on his older brother's horde of new wave cassettes, his dad's love of the fiddle, and his Vietnamese grandmum's stories of the old country. Then he made an uneasy truce w/ Erebor's only hookup for American alt rock CDs [Thorin. It was Thorin.], and that was all she wrote.

The music taste of a man who never truly grew out of his 90s ska/alt rock stoner phase, but who is also fiercely proud of his quarter Irish heritage, has extreme nostalgia for the synthy new wave that populated the dying Deutsche Demokratische Republik of the 80s, and, above all else, loves a fucking banger.

Shield Brother - 60 songs, 3hr 51 min.

Dwalin Fundinovich would like for all you nosy cunts to disregard the (admittedly, piss-poor) optics of a current ruling monarch's right hand having so many anarchist liberation anthems on his mp3 player. You don't just enter the Moscow punk scene at 13 and not come out at least a little bit radicalized.

Soviet hard rock and punk, first wave Brit punk, heavy metal, songs that are on the slightly grungier side of grunge, and brawl-y Celtic rock to fist fight to, along with some more “acceptable” post punk and a butt rock banger or two thrown in for good measure. It may not be everything, but it’s everything that matters.

The Road Goes Ever On - 68 songs, 4hr 36 min.

Immaculate roadtrip beats curated by noted harpist, composer, vernacular music theorist, grunge head, banjo fancier, and turbogay Depeche Mode stan King-in-Exile Thorin Durinul II. From the Great American Roadtrip to a journey across the ruins of Europe to save the world, it's a playlist for all occasions.

A playlist that displays an obsession with vernacular-inspired folk fusion that truly boggles the mind, but which also clearly demonstrates that it’s obviously by a person who heard rock and roll for the first time circa 1996 at the tender age of 22, and subsequently fell in love with all the incredible sounds a guitar could make. (It was a college radio station, of course). A truly global music ramble, it also features unconventional arrangements, mellow gold, Americana, and a heavy dose of new wave and post punk--not the least of which is, of course, Depeche Mode.

UPDATE 

Bilbo suddenly finds himself back at his flat in the East End, where everything is somehow both the same as he left it and wildly, fundamentally different. Perhaps this wasn't such a brilliant idea, after all.

“Y'know, we have a saying in Erebor,” he said suddenly on the exhale, flipping over a trade paperback to get a look at the synopsis. Though he didn’t look directly at Bilbo, the man’s gaze contained a decidedly calculating glint. "It goes that the measure of a man's heart is reflected in the quality of his craft. I’d like to know yours, if you’re amenable."

Bilbo leaned back in his chair, lifting his chin to blow a wobbly smoke ring toward the water stained ceiling. "A craft? I'm not sure I have one."

Nori snorted. "Everybody has a craft, Mister Baggins."

UPDATE

Bilbo's had quite the morning. In between falling through the rotting barn floor into a cellar full of undead, then getting captured by cultists, then negotiating his way out of a hostage situation, he's pretty sure he deserves a nap. He just has a few more things to take care of first, limited but not included to babysitting a hedgehog, dealing with more angry paramilitary cultists, and talking a delirious king down from doing anything stupid. It's a good thing he gets to go home after this.

They weren’t going to make it.

Bilbo lunged toward the driver’s side and jerked the bottom of the wheel towards him. 

The string of chakra beads tilted sharply as the Rabbit careened around the corner. Bilbo screamed a little as he felt the driver's side wheels leave the ground, the hydraulic suspension creaking ominously as they narrowly avoided diving nose-first into the gully. Thorin swore loudly as he tumbled to the other end of the seat bench, his high ponytail flopping completely over his head and thwapping him straight in his royal nose.

“Watch the road!” he snarled through his thick mass of hair.

Radagast abruptly straightened, triumphantly holding aloft a tiny brown pincushion. “Aha! Here he is!” 

“Oh my God, we’re going to die,” wailed Bilbo, hand still tightly gripping the steering wheel.

UPDATE

Bilbo somehow escapes from the dark and spooky basement he managed to land in, but quickly realizes he was probably better off down there.

"What the fuck," Bilbo wheezed.

The faint beginnings of a hysterical laugh burbled at the back of his throat. Boat Shoes only seemed to groan frustratedly in response.

“I’m alive,” he said, wincing at the crack in his voice. His shoulder throbbed in time with his words, but the sensation only served to highlight the truth of that statement. Something strangely similar to hope began stirring in the base of his stomach. “I’m alive.”

chapter 17 is, against all odds, now live !  TW for for standard gore, incredibly rusty writing, descriptions of injuries, Afrikaans courtesy of Google Translate plus some horribly on the nose naming, and human on human violence.

UPDATE

Now that he's living through the apocalypse, Bilbo figured that he would have to do a lot of things he formerly thought to be exclusive to the world of fiction. But for some reason, negotiating a hostage situation with cultists wasn’t exactly on his list of things to look out for. 

“No, not forced,” he said strangely, the cadence of it making Bilbo frown. “This is the best option. The only option.”

“Sounds like you’re being forced to me,” said Bilbo.

William shook his head violently, his grip beginning to tremble on the barrel of his rifle. “No, no. Everybody has a choice, as is written in the scripture. I chose this.”

Ok i dont want to say too much bc some of this is supposed to be a ~reveal~, but the company in ggcyd DO have regular ass jobs while in exile in scotland. Most of them, like dwalin and bifur and bombur and nori all pack freight at the railyard, dori also packs frieght but has a tailoring business on the side, ori was about to go to art school, kili is taking a gap year and also packing freight while training for biathlon competitions, gloin is a conductor on scotrail, fili is a student at the university of the highlands and islands, and bofur is a physics teacher at a posh all boys independent school in glasgow. Bofur has a degree from the moscow institute of physics and technology so like, his degree is recognized in the UK but most of the others who do have degrees all got them from now-defunct soviet universities that had small satellite campuses in erebor so they have to stick to mostly blue collar work now that theyre living outside of eastern europe. Balin doesnt work bc he mainly runs the compound as a sort of property manager/conflict arbitrator/general admin. Dis is a cashier at the local farm co-op and thorin's job is a surprise :^)
