Pick Us!
In which you have to choose a club and it looks like everyone wants a piece of you.
You were minding your own business, dodging Grim's increasingly creative ways to get you to buy premium tuna, when Crowley swept in with his usual dramatic flair.
âAh, my dear pupil!â he exclaimed, arms wide like a bad community theater actor. âTo better immerse yourself in school life, you must join a club. Itâs mandatory!â
Before you could protest or ask any clarifying questions, he disappeared in a swirl of his cape, leaving you standing there with nothing but Grimâs unsympathetic shrug.
Naturally, this information traveled faster than you could process it, because the next thing you knew, Ace was practically dragging you by the arm across campus.
The Basketball Club
âAlright, listen,â Ace began, spinning a basketball on one finger and grinning like he just invented the sport. âYouâre obviously joining the basketball club. Itâs the best. Iâm here, Floydâs here, and even Jamilâs here, so really, itâs a no-brainer.â
âIs that supposed to sell it?â you asked, crossing your arms.
âUh, yeah!â he said, tossing the ball toward you. It immediately bounced off your hands and hit the floor. Ace, undeterred, caught it mid-bounce and gave you a wink. âDonât worry, Iâll teach you. Iâm, like, super good at this. Just ask him!â
From across the gym, some poor guyâbless his heartâtried to nod in support, but you caught the nervous look he shot Ace instead.
âOkay, sure,â you said, âbut isnât this just an excuse for you to show off?â
âMaybe,â Ace said with zero shame, dribbling the ball dramatically before attempting a layup. The ball bounced off the rim and into Floydâs waiting hands.
âShrimpy!â Floyd called, tossing the ball behind his head without looking (and still somehow making the shot). âJoin the club. Itâll be fuuuuun.â
You hesitated, because with Floyd, âfunâ could mean literally anything. âDefine fun,â you said cautiously.
âSimple! You, me, and Ace crushing people in games!â Floyd grinned, leaning closer to you. âAnd if anyone tries to mess with you, Iâll squish âem.â
Ace groaned. âFloyd, you canât just threaten people into joining.â
âWhy not?â Floyd asked, genuinely puzzled.
âBecause itâs weird!â
âNo, itâs effective,â Floyd countered, shooting you another toothy grin. âCâmon, Shrimpy, youâre already here. Iâll even let you call the plays. Or, you know, not. Whatever.â
â...Youâre just bored, arenât you?â
âObviously,â Floyd admitted, leaning lazily against the wall. âBut hey, if you join, I wonât let Ace hog the ball. Win-win, right?â
And then there was Jamil, who had been sitting silently on the sidelines, observing the chaos with his usual exasperated expression.
âAre they done?â he asked, finally standing and walking over to you.
âI donât think so,â you replied, watching as Floyd tried to steal the ball from Ace mid-dribble.
Jamil sighed. âTypical.â He glanced at you, his tone cool and measured. âIgnore them. Theyâre just trying to drag you into their antics.â
âAntics?â Floyd repeated, offended.
âYeah, Jamil,â Ace added, narrowing his eyes. âWhatâre you implying?â
âIâm implying youâre both terrible at convincing people,â Jamil said smoothly. He turned back to you. âIf youâre interested in joining the club, youâll actually get something out of it. Physical exercise, teamwork, strategy. And if you stick around, Iâll make sure youâre not stuck with them during practice.â
âHey!â Ace protested.
Floyd just laughed. âJamilâs still salty about the last scrimmage.â
âHardly,â Jamil said, arching an eyebrow. âIâm just pointing out that if you want to learn how to actually play, youâd be better off with me.â
You blinked. âAre you⊠offering to train me?â
He shrugged, but there was a faint smirk on his face. âIf it means saving you from their nonsense, yes.â
All you can do is sigh and say "I'll think about it"
Track and Field Club
You barely made it out of the basketball clubâs gym alive when Deuce grabbed your wrist like his life depended on it. His expression was that unique combination of earnest and panickedâclassic Deuce.
âWait, donât decide yet!â he said, already dragging you down the corridor. âYou havenât even seen the track and field club! You might like it better!â
âDeuce,â you began, trying to keep up without tripping. âI havenât evenââ
âJust come on!â
Before you knew it, you were standing on the edge of the outdoor track, blinking in the sunlight as Deuce shoved you forward like he was presenting a prize to a panel of judges. Jack, in the middle of sprint drills, stopped mid-stride to look over at you. His tail flicked once, and he jogged over with that intimidating mix of focus and curiosity he always had.
âYouâre trying to recruit them?â Jack asked, crossing his arms.
Deuce nodded, puffing out his chest like he was making the ultimate sales pitch. âYeah! Track and fieldâs way better than basketball. No offense to those guys.â
âI take offense,â you muttered, but neither of them heard.
âPlus,â Deuce continued, âweâve got variety. Running, jumping, throwingâyou can do anything. Itâs not just bouncing a ball around, you know?â
Jack nodded in agreement. âItâs good for discipline. Builds strength, endurance, and focus. If you want to improve yourself, this is the place to do it.â
âUh-huh,â you said, glancing at the track. âAnd what if I⊠donât exactly have focus?â
âThatâs fine!â Deuce said, grinning brightly. âWeâll help you! Right, Jack?â
Jack nodded. âOf course. Weâll start with basic drills.â He gave you a once-over, sizing you up. âHowâs your stamina?â
âDefine⊠stamina,â you said cautiously, because you had a feeling your answer wasnât going to impress him.
Jackâs ears twitched, and he leaned slightly closer. âHow far can you run without stopping?â
âUh,â you began, nervously shifting your weight. âTo the fridge?â
Jack blinked. â...Youâre joking, right?â
Deuce coughed loudly, clapping a hand on Jackâs shoulder. âDonât worry about that! Everyone starts somewhere, right? Besides, theyâre here because they want to try something new.â
You stared at Deuce. âI donât remember saying that.â
âExactly!â he continued, ignoring you entirely. âThink of how awesome itâd be to have us training you! Weâll get you in the best shape of your life. Right, Jack?â
Jack, who was still mildly horrified by your fridge comment, hesitated. â...Sure.â
Deuce, now fully in salesman mode, gestured to the track like it was some sort of holy land. âAnd you donât have to worry about teamwork stuff! You can focus on your personal goals andââ
âUnless youâre in a relay,â Jack interjected.
âRight, but relays are cool!â Deuce added quickly. âLike⊠team spirit, you know?â
You glanced between the two of them, taking in Jackâs intensity and Deuceâs enthusiasm. They were both staring at you with a mix of hope and determination, and honestly, it was kind of endearing.
âOkay,â you said slowly. âIf I join, do I get to skip the first practice?â
âNo,â Jack said immediately.
Deuce grinned sheepishly. âBut weâll go easy on you!â
âJack doesnât look like he believes that.â
Jack tilted his head, his tail swishing once. âYouâll thank me later.â
âIâm not sure Iâll survive later,â you muttered.
Deuce ignored that, clapping his hands together. âGreat! I knew youâd love it here! Câmon, letâs give them a quick demo, Jack!â
Before you could protest, the two of them took off around the track, moving at speeds that made you feel dizzy just watching. Deuce kept glancing back to grin at you, while Jack stayed focused, every stride perfect.
You stood there, bewildered and vaguely impressed, wondering if joining any club was a good idea at all. Still, as Deuce stumbled back toward you, sweaty but grinning like a puppy who just fetched a stick, you couldnât help but laugh.
âThink about it, okay?â he said, hands on his knees as he caught his breath. âWeâd love to have you here.â
Jack jogged up beside him, barely winded. âYouâll fit in if you put in the effort.â
âYeah,â Deuce agreed, nodding earnestly. âSo⊠what do you think?â
You hesitated, glancing at the track, then at them. ââŠIâll get back to you.â
Deuce grinned like that was a victory, and Jack just nodded approvingly. As they walked back to their drills, you realized you had yet another club to considerâand these two werenât going to make it any easier.
Board Game Club
Before you could make your escapeâor even fully process the events of the dayâyour wrist was suddenly seized by Ortho, who zoomed in out of nowhere like a missile with a purpose.
âThere you are!â Ortho exclaimed with unsettling cheer. His grip was surprisingly firm for someone who probably didnât even need to touch you to move you. âBig Brotherâs been waiting! Come on!â
âWaitâwhat? Ortho, where are weââ
âNo time for questions!â And just like that, he lifted you into the air like you were a deranged package and he was some kind of express courier. You barely had time to flail before he rocketed off, delivering you with precision to the board game club's headquarters.
You landed with an unceremonious thud, right in front of Idia, who nearly fell out of his chair.
âOrtho!â Idia hissed, his flaming hair flaring. âYou canât just abduct people like that!â
âBut you said you wanted them to join!â Ortho chirped. âMission accomplished!â
Azul, seated calmly at the head of the table, adjusted his glasses and smirked. âWell, well. A delivery serviceâhow efficient. Welcome to the board game club.â
You were still processing the fact that youâd been airmailed when Idia slouched lower in his seat, muttering, âUgh, so embarrassing. Ortho, seriouslyâŠâ
âUh,â you began, brushing yourself off. âHi?â
Azul gestured grandly to the table in front of him, where an array of meticulously organized board games was displayed like they were ancient treasures. âHere, we focus on strategy, intellect, and the fine art of outwitting your opponent. Unlike other clubs,â he said with a pointed glance at the door, âthis one doesnât require you to break a sweat.â
âThatâs actually kind of appealing,â you admitted, still wary.
Idia perked up slightly, his hair flickering a little brighter. âSee? I told you itâs cool. I mean, if you like, uh, not running around like some NPC.â
Ortho leaned over, nodding enthusiastically. âAnd Big Brotherâs really good at this stuff! Heâs undefeated in our club tournaments!â
âThatâs because youâre the only other member whoâs not a liability!â Idia blurted, before realizing what heâd just said. âUhâI meanâyouâd totally, like, be an asset. Probably.â
Azul cleared his throat, clearly annoyed at being excluded from the compliment. âAllow me to demonstrate. Why donât we have a quick match? You against Idia.â
âWhat?â Idia sat up straight, his hair sparking nervously. âNo way! Thatâs not fairâI canât justââ
Azul gave him a smile sharp enough to cut glass. âDonât tell me youâre afraid of losing, Idia.â
Idiaâs face turned pink. âFine,â he grumbled, setting up the board. âBut donât blame me if I crush them.â
You sat down reluctantly, realizing too late that this was probably a trap. Idiaâs fingers moved at lightning speed as he set up his pieces, muttering calculations under his breath. Ortho leaned over your shoulder, giving you completely useless advice like, âJust believe in yourself!â
To your surprise, you managed to hold your own for the first few turns. Idia glanced up at you, his eyes narrowing slightly as if he were reevaluating your existence.
âHuh,â he murmured. âNot bad. For a newbie.â
âIs that a compliment?â you asked, moving your piece cautiously.
âDonât let it go to your head,â he said quickly, his face turning red again.
Azul chuckled from his spot at the table. âSee? A game of wits and strategy. Isnât this far superior to running laps or throwing balls into hoops?â
âHey!â you said, pointing your game piece at him. âDonât diss the other clubs. Theyâre passionate too!â
Azul raised an eyebrow. âPassion doesnât win battles. Strategy does.â
The game dragged on, and by the end of it, you were completely out of your depth. Idia, on the other hand, looked like heâd just stepped out of an anime boss fight, his hair flaring dramatically as he made his final move.
âCheckmate,â he said, grinning slightly.
âWrong game, Big Brother,â Ortho corrected.
âWhatever!â Idia snapped, but he didnât look too upset. âItâs over, okay?â
Azul leaned forward, smirking again. âSo, what do you think? Ready to join?â
You leaned back in your chair, your brain fried from trying to keep up. âI⊠I need to think about it.â
Ortho beamed. âThat means theyâre considering it! Success!â
Idia muttered something under his breath about âtoo much pressureâ and âwhy is this so stressful,â but you caught a tiny flicker of a smile as he fiddled with one of the game pieces.
Azul, ever the businessman, handed you a brochure as you left. âTake your time. But rememberâintellect always wins.â
You left the board game club feeling like youâd just survived a high-stakes negotiation. And as Ortho cheerfully waved goodbye, you couldnât help but wonder if all the clubs were this intense.
Film Studies Club
You were rounding a corner, still recovering from your latest club recruitment ambush, when a perfectly manicured hand shot out and grabbed your wrist.
Before you could even yelp, you found yourself being gracefully pulled into the Film Studies Clubroom by none other than Vil Schoenheit. His strides were purposeful, his posture impeccable, and his expressionâŠwell, letâs just say it was the definition of Iâm doing you a favor, peasant.
âVil?â you sputtered, barely managing to keep up. âWhat are youââ
âI need to vet you,â Vil said simply, his voice calm but leaving no room for argument. âThe Film Studies Club could use some fresh blood, and you look⊠adequate.â
âAdequate?â you echoed, mildly offended but too intrigued to argue further.
He led you to the center of the room, gesturing for you to stand under a perfectly angled spotlight. âDonât misunderstand,â Vil continued, crossing his arms and regarding you with a critical eye. âIâm merely evaluating your potential. Our club requires both talent and diligenceâqualities that, if Iâm being honest, are rare in this school.â
âUh, thanks?â
Vil ignored you, pulling out a script and flipping through it like he was deciding your fate. âIf you canât pass the audition, you can still join as a backstage hand,â he said airily. âWeâre short on those too.â
âWow, what an inspiring pitch,â you muttered, but Vilâs sharp gaze silenced you immediately.
âRead this,â he instructed, handing you the script and gesturing for you to begin.
You hesitated, glancing at the lines. âYouâre serious? Right now?â
âDo I look like someone who jokes about art?â Vil asked, raising a perfectly sculpted brow.
Point taken.
Clearing your throat, you started reading, trying to put some effort into it. Vil watched you intently, his expression inscrutable. He occasionally tilted his head, as if mentally dissecting every word you spoke, every movement you made.
When you finished, you looked at him expectantly, waiting for his verdict.
Vil tapped his chin, his eyes narrowing. âYouâre not hopeless,â he said finally, in a tone that made it sound like a compliment. âRough around the edges, yes, but Iâve seen worse.â
âGee, thanks,â you said dryly.
âDonât be smug. Youâll need work,â Vil continued, ignoring your tone. âBut I suppose you have potential.â
âAnd if I didnât?â
Vil gave a delicate shrug, his expression cool. âThen youâd still be useful behind the scenes. But consider this your opportunity to elevate yourself. Being part of my club means striving for excellenceâno exceptions.â
You couldnât help but smirk. âIs this really about me, or are you just desperate for members?â
Vilâs eyes narrowed, but there was a flicker of amusement there. âDesperation has nothing to do with it. Iâm simply ensuring that my club remains unparalleled. If you happen to benefit from my guidance, so be it.â
âWell, when you put it that way, how can I refuse? I'll think about it.â
Vilâs lips curved into the faintest of smiles. âSmart choice. Now, donât make me regret it.â
With that, he turned on his heel, leaving you standing there wondering what exactly youâd just signed up forâand if Vilâs idea of âelevating yourselfâ involved a complete personality overhaul.
Science Club
You barely had time to process Vil's dramatic exit when a familiar voice whispered theatrically, âAh, my muse! Fate conspires to bring us together!â
Before you could react, Rook Hunt appearedâswooped, reallyâout of nowhere and expertly whisked you away from the Film Studies Clubroom. It was less like being led and more like being caught mid-flight by an overly enthusiastic bird of prey.
âRook?!â you yelped as he practically danced you down the hallway. âWhat is happening?â
âMon ami,â he declared, his eyes glittering with fervor, âyou must see the science club! A world of wonder awaits you!â
âWaitâscience?â you echoed, incredulous. âYouâre in the science club?â
âAh, oui! Science is but another stage upon which the beauty of nature and humanity performs its eternal dance! The experiments! The cultivation of life! The creation of culinary masterpieces! All expressions of art, no?â
You werenât sure if he was describing scientific principles or poetry, but before you could argue, Rook had dragged you into the science clubroom.
The room was a chaotic mix of activities. One corner housed a vibrant garden under grow lights, another had chemistry equipment bubbling away ominously, and a third corner smelled suspiciously like freshly baked bread. Trey Clover stood near a counter, pulling cookies out of an oven as if this were the most normal thing to happen in a science lab.
âAh, there you are,â Trey greeted, smiling warmly. âRook said heâd bring someone by. Iâm guessing youâre deciding on a club?â
You glanced between Rook, who was already gesturing dramatically at a rack of test tubes, and Trey, who held up a tray of cookies like a peace offering. âI⊠guess I am?â
âBien sĂ»r!â Rook exclaimed, sweeping an arm toward the greenery in the corner. âBehold! We grow life itself here! Tomatoes, basil, flowersâanything your heart desires!â
Trey added, âWe also bake and cook as part of our activities. Itâs a great way to learn about chemistry and make something useful at the same time.â
âAnd explosions!â Rook chimed in enthusiastically. âOccasionally, there are explosions.â
Trey shot him a look. âNot⊠intentionally.â
Rook turned back to you, his expression radiant. âThink of the possibilities, mon ami! With science, you can cultivate beauty, create masterpieces, and perhaps even unlock secrets of the universe! And, of course, I am here to guide youâto nurture the artistic soul that dwells within!â
âAlso,â Trey added, far more pragmatically, âweâre not picky about what activities you want to try. Itâs a flexible club, so you could do a little bit of everything.â
You considered this as Trey handed you a cookie. It was warm and delicious, which admittedly swayed your opinion a little.
âHmm,â you said thoughtfully, âso I could garden, bake, and blow things up all in one club?â
âExactly!â Trey said with a smile.
Rook leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a stage whisper. âAnd think, mon cherâif you hone your talents here, you could support Vil in creating the cinematic beauty he so envisions! Science and art, united in harmony!â
You blinked. âWait, are you trying to recruit me for this club and help Vil at the same time?â
Rook grinned. âNature does not limit itself to one purpose, mon ami, and neither do I.â
Trey sighed but didnât deny it.
âWell, this is definitely⊠something,â you said, nibbling on the cookie. âIâll think about it.â
âAh, a maybe!â Rook clasped his hands together like youâd just promised him your soul. âA victory in itself!â
Before you could say anything else, Rook twirled you toward the door, clearly ready to drag you to your next destinationâor possibly just keep talking about âthe poetry of chlorophyllâ until you gave in.
Pop Music Club
Just as you were beginning to suspect Rook was about to wax poetic about âthe lyrical mysteries of yeast fermentation,â a sudden voice interrupted.
âOh-ho, whatâs this?â
Before you could even react, Lilia Vanrouge materialized out of thin air, practically glowing with chaotic energy. âAh, my dear friend! Youâre far too bright a star to waste away on science experiments! Come with meâpop stardom awaits!â
You blinked. âWait, what?â
And just like that, you were swept up in Liliaâs whirlwind. He dragged you down the hallway with a skip in his step and a mischievous laugh, leaving Rook and Trey in his dust.
âLilia, I can walk, you know!â you said, stumbling to keep up.
âBut whereâs the drama in that?â Lilia replied, cackling as he pushed open the doors to the Pop Music Clubroom.
Inside, the room was a cacophony of sound and color. Disco lights spun, a half-finished banner reading âNext Big Thing!â hung lopsidedly on the wall, and Kalim was gleefully banging away on a drum like it owed him money. Cater sat cross-legged on the floor, scrolling through his phone and periodically snapping selfies with sparkly filters.
âOh, hey!â Kalim greeted you, waving so enthusiastically he almost hit himself with the drum stick. âYouâre here to join us, right? This club is the best! We have music, dancing, and itâs all just super fun!â
Cater glanced up from his phone, his grin wide and just a little too calculated. âYouâd fit right in! Think of all the magicam-worthy moments we could create together. Plus, the followers youâd get? Off the charts.â
âFollowers?â you echoed, glancing at Lilia.
âAh, but of course!â Lilia said, flinging his arms wide as if presenting you to an adoring crowd. âThe Pop Music Club isnât just about musicâitâs about presence! Charisma! The ability to captivate a room with a single note or a dazzling smile!â
âItâs also about having a good time!â Kalim added, spinning in a circle for no reason other than sheer joy.
Cater nodded, holding up his phone. âAnd donât forgetâevery moment is a potential viral video. You, me, Lilia, and Kalim as the dream team? Weâd own the algorithm.â
You hesitated. âUh, I donât even play an instrument.â
âNeither does he!â Lilia said brightly, pointing at some unfortunate bystander.
âHey!â he protested. âI play the Kalimba!â He promptly tried to play a note, missed the rhythm entirely, and Lilia laughed like it was the funniest thing ever.
âSee?â Lilia said, unfazed. âTalent is optional here. All we need is your spirit!â
Cater stood, brushing imaginary dust off his pants. âWe also dabble in choreography, so if youâve got two left feet, donât worryâweâll teach you how to make them look intentional.â
âCome on, join us!â Kalim said, grabbing your hands and bouncing up and down like an overexcited puppy. âWe could totally use your energy!â
âWhat energy?â you asked, deadpan. âIâve been dragged between clubs all dayâI barely have any left.â
âExactly!â Lilia said with a wink. âWeâll channel whatâs left into a glorious crescendo of pop music excellence!â
You werenât sure whether to laugh, cry, or just surrender entirely to the chaos. Liliaâs grin was practically infectious, Kalimâs enthusiasm radiated like the sun, and Cater was already adjusting the angle of his phone to catch you in the best light.
âWell,â you muttered, âat least it sounds⊠lively.â
âLively is an understatement,â Cater said, snapping a selfie with you and Lilia in the background. âHashtag PopStarsInTheMaking! Youâre gonna love it here.â
âLet me guess,â you said dryly. âYouâre already planning to upload that, arenât you?â
âOh, absolutely,â Cater said with a wink.
Lilia clapped his hands, his eyes sparkling with excitement. âSo, what do you say? Ready to unleash your inner star?â
âI⊠will think about it,â you replied, edging toward the door.
âThink fast!â Kalim called after you. âThe bass is calling your name!â
You bolted before anyone could shove an instrument into your hands.
Equestrian Club
As you hurried down the hallway, still reeling from the pop music chaos you'd just escaped, you nearly collided with a flash of red.
"Ah, there you are!"
You blinked up at none other than Riddle Rosehearts, who looked as though he'd been scouring the entire school for you. His eyes narrowed, and his voice carried a tone of stern authority mixed with subtle relief.
"I've been looking for you," Riddle said, crossing his arms. "Ace and Deuce mentioned that youâre considering which club to join. As housewarden, itâs my responsibility to ensure you make a proper choice."
You blinked, still processing. "Oh, uh⊠thanks?"
"Enough dilly-dallying," Riddle said briskly, taking your wrist with surprising firmness. "You're coming with me to the Equestrian Club."
"Wait, whatâ"
Before you could finish, Riddle had already begun marching you toward the stables. You were half-dragged, half-guided, catching snippets of his lecture along the way about the merits of horseback riding, discipline, and poise.
When you arrived, the warm scent of hay filled the air, and the sound of soft nickering greeted you. The stables were pristine, the horses sleek and well-groomed. Standing nearby were Silver and Sebek, both tending to the horses.
"Riddle, you found them" Silver greeted you with his usual calm demeanor. He gave you a faint smile as he gently brushed a dappled gray mare. "Perfect timingâwe were just about to go for a ride."
Sebek, on the other hand, straightened like a soldier at attention, his voice booming. "THEY WILL JOIN US, OF COURSE! IT IS ONLY FITTING FOR AN INDIVIDUAL OF WORTH TO EMBRACE SUCH A NOBLE ART!"
"Sebek, indoor voice," Riddle said sharply, pinching the bridge of his nose.
"I AM OUTDOORS!" Sebek retorted, though he did lower his volume slightly.
You glanced nervously at the horses. "Uh, I donât know if Iâm⊠horse material."
"Nonsense," Riddle said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Riding teaches discipline, focus, and responsibility. Itâs the perfect club for fostering growthâand for avoiding unnecessary distractions like some less dignified clubs."
"Pop Music Club?" you guessed.
Riddle sniffed, his expression sour. "Among others."
Silver walked over, still holding the brush, and gave you a reassuring nod. "Donât worry. The horses are gentle, and we can teach you everything. Itâs a peaceful activity once you get used to it."
"Peaceful!" Sebek exclaimed, throwing his arms wide. "It is a pursuit befitting the greatest warriors! EVEN LORD MALLEUSâ"
"Sebek," Riddle interrupted, his patience clearly wearing thin. "Focus on the matter at hand."
"Apologies!" Sebek barked, saluting.
Riddle turned back to you, his expression softening just a fraction. "The Equestrian Club isnât just about riding horses. Itâs about elegance, partnership, and understanding. You could benefit greatly from it."
"And the horses are great listeners," Silver added.
"Unlike some humans," Sebek muttered under his breath.
You bit back a laugh as Riddle gave Sebek another glare.
"What do you say?" Riddle asked, stepping aside to let you see one of the horsesâa chestnut with a kind, inquisitive gaze. "This is Vorpal. Perhaps a ride would convince you?"
The horse whinnied softly, and for a moment, you considered it. There was something appealing about the tranquility of the stables, the camaraderie of the club members, and the undeniable charm of working with such majestic creatures.
But then you remembered the drum chaos, the science experiments, and Vilâs dramatic vetting process.
"Let me, uh⊠think about it?" you said, taking a step back.
Riddle sighed, though he looked more exasperated than disappointed. "Very well. But donât wait too longâindecision is unbecoming."
"Yeah," you mumbled. "Got it."
As you made your escape, you could hear Sebek booming, "RIDING A HORSE WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE!"
You werenât sure about that, but you were certain that escaping club recruitment was starting to feel like an Olympic sport.
Magift Club
As you staggered away from the stables, thoroughly frazzled by Sebekâs enthusiastic yelling and Riddleâs intense lecture on discipline, you barely had time to catch your breath beforeâ
âYo, gotcha!â
A pair of hands grabbed your shoulders from behind, and you let out a very undignified yelp. You turned to find Ruggie grinning up at you like a mischievous hyena that had just found its next meal.
âRuggie! Whatâ?â
âNo time for questions, boss,â he said, practically dragging you down the path. âLeonaâs orders. He told me to bring ya to the Magift Club.â
âThe Magift Club?â you repeated, already sensing disaster.
Ruggie nodded, smirking. âYup. Letâs go, letâs go!â
âButâwaitâI donât even have magic!â you protested as he hauled you toward the field.
âDetails, details,â Ruggie waved off, his grip on your arm firm.
Soon enough, you were dumped unceremoniously on the sidelines of the Magift field. Leona was lounging on the grass under the shade of a tree, looking entirely too comfortable for someone allegedly trying to recruit you. Epel was nearby, aggressively practicing his throws while muttering something that sounded suspiciously like âIâll show âem.â
Leona cracked one eye open lazily as Ruggie dropped you off. ââBout time,â he drawled.
âLeona,â you said flatly, âwhy would you want me in the Magift Club? I don't even have magic.â
He yawned, looking entirely unbothered. âYeah, I know that. Youâre still better than the other herbivores running around. You can be the manager.â
âManager?â
âYup,â Ruggie chimed in, plopping down next to Leona. âYouâd handle all the boring stuffâpaperwork, schedules, snacks, makinâ sure Epel doesnât throw a fit when he gets tackled.â
âI donât throw fits!â Epel yelled, narrowly missing a hoop with his throw.
Leona smirked. âSure you donât.â
You crossed your arms, unconvinced. âWhy me, though? Youâre telling me Iâm the best candidate for this?â
Leona sat up slightly, his sharp eyes locking on yours. âIâm sayinâ youâre the least annoying option. I donât need some herbivore manager whoâs gonna cry every time I take a nap instead of practicing. Youâre not useless, so quit whining.â
Ruggie leaned in conspiratorially. âBasically, youâre the only one Leona doesnât feel like chasing off the field after two days.â
You raised an eyebrow. âSounds like a ringing endorsement.â
Leona shrugged. âTake it or leave it. Makes no difference to me.â
At that moment, Epel ran up, panting slightly from his practice. âCâmon, you should join us!â he urged. âYou donât need magic to be part of the team. And if you ever wanna learn some tricks, I can teach ya!â
Leona gave him a lazy side-eye. âDonât scare them off.â
âIâm not scarinâ âem! Iâm convincinâ âem!â Epel shot back, glaring at Leona before turning back to you. âSeriously, we could use someone like you. The clubâs fun, I promise!â
Ruggie snickered. âFunâs a stretch. Itâs more like⊠survival of the fittest with a ball involved.â
âAnd napping,â Leona added with a smirk.
Epel crossed his arms. âWell, maybe if someone practiced instead of nappinâ, weâd win more games!â
Leona waved him off with a scoff.
You sighed, rubbing your temples. âI donât know, guys. This sounds like a lot of chaos.â
âChaos is half the fun,â Ruggie said with a grin. âCâmon, boss, think of all the free food we get during games. And youâd get to boss Leona around as the manager. Ainât that worth it?â
Leona snorted. âGood luck with that.â
You glanced at the trioâEpel brimming with determination, Ruggie radiating mischief, and Leona looking like he didnât care but also somehow cared just enough to try. It was⊠weirdly tempting, in its own way.
âIâll⊠think about it,â you said finally.
âFair enough,â Leona said, already reclining again. âDonât take too long, though. Weâve got a game next week, and Iâm not filling out paperwork.â
Ruggie winked. âDonât worry, youâll come around. Everyone does.â
As you left the field, you couldnât shake the feeling that youâd just been almost recruited into something much more taxing than a simple club.
Mountain Lovers Club
Before you could escape the Magift field and all its potential paperwork, you took a sharp turnâonly to smack right into what felt like a wall of polite menace. A soft, knowing chuckle sounded above you.
âOh dear, do be careful,â came Jade Leechâs unmistakably smooth voice.
You took a step back, already dreading the conversation. âJade,â you said warily, âwhat are you doing here?â
His sharp smile grew ever so slightly. âWaiting for you, of course. Word travels fast, and Iâve heard youâre in the market for a club.â
âOh no,â you muttered. âYouâre not here toââ
Before you could finish, he was already guiding you away, his hand light on your arm but unyielding, like a vice hidden under a silk glove.
âCome now,â he said, his tone as polite as ever, âI simply must show you the Mountain Lovers Club.â
âThe what now?â you asked, bewildered.
âThe Mountain Lovers Club,â he repeated, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
âAnd⊠who else is in this club?â
âWhy, just me.â
You stopped in your tracks. âItâs just you?â
âYes.â Jade smiled serenely, as if this were not a glaring red flag. âI am the founder, leader, and sole member. But with your arrival, that could very well change.â
You blinked at him, unsure if youâd misheard. âWait, so youâve been running a one-person club this whole time?â
âIndeed.â His expression didnât falter in the slightest. âThe Mountain Lovers Club is dedicated to the appreciation of all things mountainous. Hiking through beautiful terrain, foraging for wild plants, observing unique ecosystems, andâon occasionâbefriending the local fauna.â
âBefriending?â
âExamining, petting, observing closelyâŠâ His eyes gleamed. âPerhaps all three.â
You shook your head, trying to process. âSo⊠why me?â
Jade clasped his hands together, the picture of poised enthusiasm. âYou strike me as someone who appreciates unique experiences. The Mountain Lovers Club offers a chance to explore the great outdoors, expand your horizons, and develop a deeper appreciation for natureâs wonders.â
âAnd by âgreat outdoors,â you mean mountains?â
âPrecisely.â
âAnd itâs just you?â
âFor now,â he said, his tone warm but his gaze uncomfortably intense. âBut every great journey begins with a single step. Yours could be joining this club.â
You gave a nervous laugh. âUh⊠I donât think hiking through mountains is really my thing.â
âAh, but how do you know unless you try?â Jadeâs smile widened. âBesides, Iâll be there to guide you every step of the way. No need to worry about getting lost⊠or encountering anything unexpected.â
The way he said âunexpectedâ made you want to run for the hills (ironic, given the circumstances).
âLook, I appreciate the offer, butââ
âI insist,â he cut in smoothly, his tone polite but with a note of finality. âAt least allow me to show you the clubâs activities. Perhaps a short hike this weekend? Iâve already prepared a route.â
You stared at him. âYouâve alreadyâŠ?â
âOf course.â His gaze was calm, calculating. âPreparation is key. Iâve even packed a lunch.â
You didnât know whether to laugh or cry. âJade, Iââ
He tilted his head, his smile remaining perfectly composed. âSurely you wouldnât refuse without at least giving it a chance? Iâve put so much thought into this.â
âWhy do I feel like I donât have a choice?â you muttered.
Jadeâs smile was razor-sharp and utterly unrepentant. âBecause you donât.â
You sighed in defeat. âFine. One hike.â
âExcellent,â he said, his tone soft and victorious. âIâll see you this Saturday at dawn.â
âDawn?!â
âOh yes,â he said, his eyes gleaming with enthusiasm. âThe mountains are at their most beautiful in the early morning light. Youâll love it.â
As he sauntered away, leaving you to process your fate, you couldnât shake the feeling that youâd just agreed to something far more treacherous than a simple hike.
Gargoyle Research Society
The moment you finally reached Ramshackle Dorm, exhausted from the whirlwind of club-hopping and increasingly bizarre sales pitches, you let out a long sigh of relief. The day had been nothing short of chaotic, and all you wanted was to collapse onto your creaky old bed and forget the words âclub activitiesâ ever existed.
But just as your hand touched the doorknob, a familiar voice, deep and regal, called out from the shadows.
âChild of man.â
You jumped slightly, spinning around to see none other than Malleus Draconia emerging from beneath the pale light of the moon, his presence as imposing and enigmatic as always. He stood by one of Ramshackleâs crumbling stone walls, his expression calm but his eyes bright with an unreadable intensity.
âOh, Malleus,â you said, your voice tinged with weariness but also a touch of warmth. âDidnât see you there.â
He tilted his head ever so slightly, his gaze never leaving yours. âI was merely admiring the architecture of your dorm. It has a certain⊠wistful charm.â
You smiled faintly. âI guess thatâs one way to put it.â
Then, with the sort of graceful confidence only Malleus could manage, he stepped closer, his presence looming but never threatening. âI have heard,â he began, his tone soft and deliberate, âthat you have been seeking a club to join.â
You blinked at him, caught off guard. âHow did youââ
âThe winds carry whispers,â he said cryptically.
âRight,â you muttered, deciding not to question it.
Malleus folded his hands neatly in front of him, looking every bit the picture of regal sincerity. âIf you have not yet made your decision⊠I would like to invite you to join my club.â
Your brain, still reeling from Jadeâs mountain escapades and Leonaâs managerial demands, stalled for a moment. âYour⊠club?â
âYes,â he said, his voice brimming with quiet pride. âThe Gargoyle Research Society.â
âThe⊠what now?â
âThe Gargoyle Research Society,â he repeated, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. âI am both its founder and sole member.â
Of course, he was.
Malleus seemed oblivious to your stunned silence as he continued, his expression softening into something almost earnest. âThe society is dedicated to the appreciation and study of gargoyles. We explore the campus, observing their intricate designs and marveling at their history. There is so much beauty in their silent watch over us.â
You blinked. âSo⊠you just walk around and look at gargoyles?â
âPrecisely,â he said, his tone unironically enthusiastic.
âAnd⊠thatâs it?â
Malleus nodded solemnly. âIndeed. It is a noble pursuit, one that nurtures both the mind and the spirit.â
For a moment, you were at a loss for words. Of all the clubs youâd encountered today, this might just take the crown for most niche.
Malleus, however, seemed utterly earnest. His eyes bore into yours, his expression sincere and unguarded. âI understand if this does not align with your current interests,â he said, his voice softening. âBut should you ever feel the call of the gargoyles⊠know that you are always welcome.â
There was something so genuine in his tone, so quietly hopeful, that you felt a pang of guilt for even thinking about brushing him off. You sighed, offering him a tired but sincere smile. âYou know what? Iâll definitely consider it.â
Malleusâs eyes lit up, his calm demeanor giving way to a flicker of pure joy. âTruly?â
âTruly,â you said, nodding.
âThen I shall look forward to the day you join me,â he said, his voice as soft as a promise.
With that, he gave you a small, graceful bow before disappearing back into the night, leaving you to wonder how youâd managed to end the day not only agreeing to a potential club but also feeling oddly flattered by the idea of studying gargoyles.
You shook your head, a small smile tugging at your lips. âWhat a dayâŠâ

Rin was wrong about the Kyoto arc and most of you are too
But like Rin, you don't have to hold onto your assumptions.
With the slight resurgence in aoex popularity, I'm seeing a new rise in some fundamental misunderstandings about the characters and plot. I've been asked a lot of questions about a few certain characters over the years, and I've noticed that the base of the misunderstandings people tend to have with everyone originates in the Kyoto Arc.
What am I calling the Kyoto arc? Everything that happens in the second season of the anime and everything that happens after chapter 13 in the manga . (The point when the anime said let's go off and do our own wild thing and forget about the story and characters Kato is making! It'll be fun and totally not still be causing long lasting chaos over a decade later) and up to chapter 35. It's a 20 chapter arc, roughly. And honestly I think most of the manga exclusive Kraken arc should be included in the Kyoto arc because it is a direct continuation of Rin and Yukio's story line there, but I digress and we will get to that!
I am going to assume that you, the reader of this lengthy essay (I'm wordy and won't apologize for it, lol), are aware enough of the manga and Blue Exorcist to know that every episode in the first season of the anime after episode 16 is NOT CANON and does a poor job of depicting all the characters involved from Angel to Yukio. (There is no character with a Z, lol. So Yukio wins that role.) No one comes out looking correct in that. I know some people will argue that Rin is fine, but no. He is not similar to his canon hot headed, impulsive, loud, often violent/aggressive, and past avoiding self who would never have let his twin pull a gun on Kuro and would never have let Yukio leave after that without a fight. Sorry guys, they nuked him too. Just in a more pathetic victim way so people let it slide because he obviously needs to be protected from all the other meanies.
I am also going to assume you know character names. You can google them if you get confused Â àŽŠà”àŽŠàŽż ( á” á á” )
Anyway, back on topic. I'm going to go heavily into the start of this arc and more broad as it goes on. The initial area is where most of the misconceptions start and they kind of carry through from then on meaning the entire rest of the arc and arcs there are a few flaws in the understanding of character motivations and reasons and some just basic plot stuff.
In chapter 13 of the manga, we get this tremendous clip
Just before this moment the exwires have found out that their classmate is not a human and is powerful.
You'll notice Shima leaning against the railing there. That's because he has a cracked rib and probably a concussion. Konekomaru is now sporting a broken arm, and Ryuuji got strangled out enough to be choking on blood. Shiemi was hypnotized and controlled and carried around like a possession by a demon king who tried to eat her eyes and kept taunting about making her his bride all while she was unable to move or do anything. There is not enough written about the truly terrifying kind of assault that is for the youngest member of their group, and that's without the tangle of a relationship Amaimon and Shiemi have in it.
It is vital that everyone take a second to think about that. Izumo and Takara were not there. They stayed in the camp. They didn't pursue Amaimon, Shiemi, or Rin. They chose not to fight or try to help. The Kyoto Trio did (because Ryuuji/Bon is impulsive and ran after Rin and Shiemi to help and the others followed him) and it took all of thirty seconds for the Demon King Amaimon to knock them all out without even really putting any effort into his attack.
They manage to get out of the forest and back to the pictured bridge with Yukio leading them out while the forest catches dramatically on blue fire. (Remember that the Kyoto trio grew up hearing about how much the blue flames of Satan destroyed their home and killed their family members. Their entire life was irrevocably changed because of blue flames.) And Rin and Amaimon are wildly fucking shit up. They even yeeted Mephisto who is a much higher ranking king.
All that leads to the Paladin appearing, Arthur Angel, who orders the exwires to be interrogated and checked by medics. (Honestly a step up for True Cross. They almost never remember medics.)
The Paladin appears and then Mephisto appears, and he has Rin in tow. Rin who is entirely feral and tries to lunge for the exwires. The traumatized exwires see Rin try and attack them with an entirely demonic face. They do not know anything about his story or Shirou or even ow he got here, but they can easily see that he's tied to Satan because of the flames and now he clearly wants to hurt. Hurt them.
Now in Rin's defense, he's not in his right mind. Mephisto sheaths the sword and the demonic part is forced to retreat and Rin passes out until he's slapped awake. At that point he's the Rin we know again (the exwires still have no idea what the hell is going on) and Angel takes him into custody. Rin looks over and sees his friends bloodied and bruised and sees Ryuuji with blood on his mouth staring with an unreadable expression.
It leads to this shot:
Question for the group: Who is Ryuuji asking this to?
Not Rin, that's for sure. It's Mephisto, in my opinion. Ryuuji is asking, quite understandably, why the hell the child of Satan was put in a class of ordinary students and why none of them were told about it. They just had a Demon King attack their class of exwires all of which were struggling against a simple moth and had to reseal it instead of exorcising it. A Demon King that attacked them because he wanted to do something to the son of Satan and they had no extra protection against that. Enough so that four of them are injured or traumatized.
(Also, if you get strangled do not yell and IMMEDIATELY seek medical help. There are a lot of terrible conditions and long lasting effects that can occur with strangulation.)
So at this point everyone is made to split ways. The exwires will get a small update from Yukio, and Rin will get put on trial for his life. Neither party knows what the other is aware of, and as far as we can tell, Rin does not remember that he tried very hard to lunge at and attack the exwires.
That does not mean that Rin did not lunge for and try to attack them. Not remembering trauma you caused someone else does not erase that trauma.
There is also this moment, and you best believe I am also here to defend Shiemi because she deserves it.
Go girl. You're so right. There's nothing funny about any of this. Not your abduction, not how assaulting that entire thing was, and not the fact that he was feral and that you're feeling like a lot of this is your fault. (And it was not her fault.)
Rin's defense in most bad situations is laughter and ignoring whatever the uncomfortable thing is. This rubs everyone around him the wrong way almost every time. And that's their right. I also truly think he doesn't know what he just did and doesn't remember much past drawing the sword and he's scared, and he's able to tell the vibes are bad and he's in trouble, but doesn't really get why/how. He is a bit (a lot) of an idiot and we love him for that.
Another vital thing to understand about Rin is that he sees the demonic and violent parts of himself as someone else. He is not that demon. He is not the guy that tore apart the forest, everyone is wrong. He didn't lunge after his friends, someone else did that. He isn't out of control of his flames, that isn't him. That demon with the flames and frightening strength and burning anger isn't him. They've got it all wrong. He's just Rin.
That is a big part of Rin's story. Rin accepting that he is all those things. He is the human and he is the demon and he is all the things that comes with both of those things. He is right and wrong and kind and cruel and caring and callous and gentle and dangerous. He is Yuri and Satan and Shirou's son, and he is complicated and trying his best and slowly learning to accept what he is and isn't.
Anyway, they split ways for a shitty night. Rin's is unquestionably shittier, but again, the rest of the exwires don't get told what the hell happened.
Anime only fans will already be noticing differences, but wait, there's a lot more that was missed/ skipped over.
The Kyoto trio are all at the hospital for the next few days and get a call about the temple having been attacked. Shima's dad and Ryuuji's dad were said to have been hurt in it.
This is the second hint we get that Ryuuji is not on good terms with his dad, and the mere mention of Kyoto visibly upsets him. That'll be important a little later.
Rin goes back to class with the girls but is pulled out by Yukio for his own individual classes with Shura before anyone can say anything. The cram teacher then explains the following:
The entirety of their school is giving them instructions on what to do if Rin goes wild because the exorcist and teachers all think he will go feral again.
Rin does not know they're getting this instruction.
We then see what Yukio told them is basically: Yeah, my twin has flames. I don't because I was too weak. I get tested daily for it. The koma (a nickname for Kurikara because you can't exactly go around calling a stolen sword by its name or people will catch on) sword sealed him. I don't know why we were allowed to live when True Cross has a very loud 'no Satan or Satan offspring allowed' policy. Kay, thanks, byyyeeeeee.
So no one is happy and no one really knows anything. Just Yukio who has always known everything and had the biggest emotional, responsible, and mental burden of everything about his brother. He was left holding the bag again. Responsible for a class he's the same age as, mourning his father whose death he doesn't know the full story of, responsible for killing his own brother if he goes feral, now ostracized even more by a community of exorcist he already didn't blend in with, and now made to bear all this. Yukio is a king for holding out for so damn many arcs without showing how bad his mental health was getting with all that stress.
At this point we see Ryuuji is placing the guilt for Konekomaru and Shima being injured on his own shoulders (Konekomaru tells him it was his fault that they were injured) and Shiemi is realizing that Rin became her friend as he was revealed and that she was never as much of a support or friend to either of them as she thought.
Meanwhile Izumo who, and I cannot stress this enough, did NOTHING in the fight and was not part of most of this and has at this point made NO effort to be friends with anyone past cleaning a shirt Rin loaned her, is judging all of them visibly.
A brief interlude of Toudou being a creep and Rin showing he cannot follow orders from absolutely anyone and making Yukio and Shura frustrated at how unpredictable and manageable he is, and we're now given the mission to go to Kyoto and help there.
Ryuuji is just so blatantly shocked and not okay with the assignment to his home. Like I genuinely don't think we have a shot of Ryuuji looking more shook and shit gets wild in this manga.
Ryuuji does not want to go back to Kyoto. He left on terrible terms with his parents and swore he would not return until he had his meisters and rank. He defied his parents in even going to the cram school and now he's being forced to return a bit busted up and long before he was ready. If you do not have a bad family dynamic, you can't really get how devastating this is, but try and imagine it. It's a tremendous source of stress and frustration for Ryuuji, and the main thing he's dealing with through this arc. He has a lot of history with his father ignoring and denying him and trying to control him, and it is not a healthy dynamic. THAT is what drives Ryuuji in this arc. Kyoto, the temple, and his father. It is NOT Rin. Rin is at the bottom of his list of things to be thinking about right now.
This is essentially Ryuuji's arc, and it is, quite simply, not about Rin for him. Rin becomes a part of it, but not until later. At the moment, it is Kyoto and the shame and frustration and resentment about that which is driving him forward.
Shiemi is melting under her own self loathing at this point. She is hating herself and has never been confident and always been prone to thinking poorly of herself, and shown she is unaware of when relationships are abusive with how severely Izumo bullied her and continues to bully her.
(And I could write another essay on how fucking misogynistic it is that everyone flocks to team Izumo when she's slightly nice to Rin and blatantly ignores the Shiemi abuse because well Shiemi is annoying anyway. Check yourself and ask why you feel that way if you do. Why is violence and cruelty okay against Shiemi? Why is it forgivable in her case but not in others?)
We all board a train to Kyoto and see each other for the first time. Rin has zero ability to ever read a room (we love him for it even if he will occasionally kill us with second hand embarrassment) and is acting like he didn't try to kill them on their last interaction and like everything is normal and there isn't a big and awkward elephant in the room taking up most of the train space.
THIS GOES DOWN DIFFERENTLY IN THE MANGA THAN THE ANIME. The manga stretches this scene out to give three characters very important breathing room while the anime cuts this far shorter and mixes up the dialogue some, muddying the motives.
Rin, not reading the room, sees Shiemi and calls out happily to her. Shiemi utterly freezes and can't decide how she should respond or what she should say. She has, as far as we know, never had a friend outside of her family and the twins. She doesn't know how to interact with them and she is drowning in guilt of failing them as a friend. A lot of that is because Rin said she wasn't his friend to the Kyoto Trio and because Izumo is always telling her she's failing as a friend and saying she doesn't like her. Izumo is a bully at this point. I will not back down on that point and will continue to reiterate it. You do her incredible arc a disservice to pretend otherwise.
That leads us to the confrontation:
Ryuuji does not show any sign of anger until Rin talks about Kyoto. Then it's instant grouchy face Grouchy face and grouchy boy until one of the other two interject and then he swallows all that Kyoto frustration right back down and stomps off to sit behind Rin with Konekomaru -- who has been given a talk by their superiors on what to do if their classmates loses his shit and goes feral on them and who lost his entire temple and family to the Blue Night -- voicing his worry about Rin losing control of his flames on a tiny train where there is no where to go.
Rin visibly deflates and sinks back on his chair Izumo, the drama queen who would deny being one, enters and sees. Now Izumo has conflicting reasons for her next act. She has been ostracized and bully quite a lot in her younger life, and that is part of why she is now an ice queen. She sees Rin and wants to help him feel better and is no more in the know of what the others are actually dealing with than Rin, and I dare say that was her first and primary motive.
However Izumo cannot allow herself to do something solely out of kindness to help someone. That is a weakness she will not allow herself and dangerous. Kindness and helping gets you hurt or killed by stronger parties and she has sworn off that in all cases but Paku. (No one quite knows what magic Noriko Paku possesses, but man does she, lol.)
So Izumo sits next to Rin and waits until after the debriefing about why they're here (meaning Ryuuji is now even more upset because yep, it's absolutely his temple and their miasma and their secrets and their weaknesses being discusses and revealed and flaunted) and they chat a little about the fact that lots of people have demon blood (*cough* FORESHADOWING *cough*) and then, after getting flustered about Rin complementing her and thanking her and getting buddy-buddy enough to use a nickname, she goes cruel and decisive and makes a pointed jab at Ryuuji, who takes it in stride for a moment, and then Shiemi, who visibly deflates thinking even less of herself and that Ryuuji does not take in stride.
Izumo did a kind thing in sitting with Rin, however, the others did not do a cruel thing by not sitting with him. They simply chose to give themselves a little space from a situation they were still struggling with. The cruelest one in the moment before she spoke was probably Konekomaru, and even he wasn't talking to Rin. He was nervous and scared and talking to his friends about Rin. None of them owed Rin anything. They did not owe him their time or space or attention. They are allowed to recover from their trauma and physical injuries while not having him constantly shove his over-excited puppy-energy self in their faces constantly and make everything all the more difficult for them while they try and reconcile that guy with the feral monster that wanted to take a chunk out of them and who was not in control of the flames they've grown up terrified of.
We see the story mainly through Rin's perspective, all the more so if you're an anime only, but that does not mean Rin is always an honest and reliable narrator. He is unaware he tried to hurt them and unaware of their own trauma. He can't imagine any of their actions and reactions aren't centering around him at this moment because Rin too is going through a lot of trauma and stress of his own that they don't know about.
What I find over and over again in this story is that people excuse any poor or selfish or cruel act of Rin's because of trauma and not being perfect, but they will not excuse it in any one else. This makes for a frustrating unfairness in expectations, and frankly, turns the story boring. If no one but Rin can make mistakes, or you choose only to see other's mistakes and not Rin's, you are robbing the characters and Rin of their complexity and growth.
Izumo was kind in sitting next to Rin, and she was purposefully cruel at the exact same time. This is who Izumo is. Kind and cruel for quite a long time. Brave and selfish. Confident and self conscious. Guarded while slowly falling in love and denying it every step of the way.
So the train ride immediately goes to shit and they get loud with Ryuuji calling her out (reminder, she can call them coward all day long but she did not leave the circle and didn't fight and has not stepped forward once in any of their missions to work as a group or fight until she had to)
And Shure (in the manga) wakes up and makes them sit in a different car of the train with bariyons on their laps as punishment. Konekomaru continues to stress, Ryuuji tells him to chill, Shiemi continues to hate herself, and Izumo continues to be purposefully cruel.
The bariyons get aggressive and one pins Shiemi to the ground. Rin does Rin and burns it without warning, freaking everyone out because wow! Blue flames are just suddenly everywhere. Ryuuji interferes because again, his temple was devastated by Blue flames and he has no reason to think they can behave differently and he is nothing if not determined to protect and help his team at all times.
Shiemi realizes Rin still has control of them and tells everyone to relax, and they do.
The flames are put out and Rin immediately attacks Ryuuji.
Rin demands trust and honestly, I could understand if he was unaware that he'd caused mayhem in the forest and tried to lunge for them, but if he was aware then he has to be smoking those flames of his because there is no reason to trust him at this point. He's lied (he didn't have a choice but they don't know that and reasons do not negate that a lie happened and we are now in the lies arc) and he has shown he is dangerous and that Demon Kings kind of follow him and will attack indiscriminatingly. (It's not like they know Amaimon is not allowed to kill them.)
Rin knows he won't hurt them and thinks that should be enough. No one else knows that they can believe this at this point. Ryuuji explains that Blue Flames have killed a lot of his people and that he can't trust someone who endanger his family. It is once again Kyoto he is thinking about and Kyoto he is worried about. They are on a train to Kyoto where Blue Flames destroyed a lot and now they're bringing the one guy with Blue Flames there and he keeps flaming up so it seems like what little he still has there is going to be devoured by flames.
Rin says basically, sorry that happened but it has NOTHING to do with me. This is a naĂŻve thing to say and while technically right, is missing the point of what Ryuuji said. I can't trust you because you haven't shown me I can trust those deadly flames with you and they have absolutely devastated my home before.
The fight amps up more -- and again, Rin was the aggressor. They're both hot headed but he's the one that grabbed Ryuuji, not the other way around, and in a fairly close way to how Amaimon had grabbed Ryuuji and that can't be helping things. The fight gets louder and Konekomaru bravely intervenes and grabs both of their arms and tells them to stop. A bariyon choses that moment to cause chaos and try to kill Ryuuji and Shura has had enough and kills it but kindly doesn't kill the exwires for interrupting her nap twice over and the conversation is left entirely unresolved.
And for the next long stretch, they will not have that conversation resolved. They get back, Ryuuji is immediately accosted by his powerhouse of a mom, Torako Suguro who is pissed, and finds out that his dad has been absent and that things are going south fast in Kyoto.
From this moment on, Ryuuji will have one goal and that is to find his dad and save what few temple members he can. He wants to reunite his temple--that has always been his goal--and his dad's failure to lead and potential at being the traitor in their midst is causing what few of his sect are left to fracture even more. He is around Rin a few times in the next chapter, but his mind is never on Rin or their drama. He is wholly focused on Kyoto and the drama here.
This is where a lot of people misunderstand him. He is not avoiding Rin, he simply has a much bigger priority, as he should. This is his family and this temple is everything to him. We find out that Tatsuma has thrown their reputation in the mud and that he has caused a lot of their sect to abandon the temple, and that he has fought Ryuuji's hopes and goals every step of the way, and that he was the first to laugh at Ryuuji (which we know is an immensely traumatic memory for him) and that Tatsuma is actively working to avoid Ryuuji, and that he was at the Keep during the break in, and that several members of the Sect absolutely think Tatsuma is the traitor.
And if he isn't the traitor, then he is still failing them and running away from his duties. What's worse, we see a few of the sect (Mamushi specifically) even place some of the blame of the failure on Ryuuji.
Rin is seen working with the Kyoto trio on some kind of chore after they arrive, and actively being ignored and mistreated by the teachers. They absolutely deserve ire for the way they treat Rin like he's already gone feral and refuse to let him help.
Rin is being ostracized and thinks everything happening here is about him. He thinks the others are ignoring him and that they're upset about him. They're largely just... Not. Izumo and Shiemi are put on helping the large volume of patients and from what we see, Izumo doesn't chat with Rin again after the bus.
Shiemi sees this as a way to not let people down (she thinks she let everyone down in the forest. That it was her fault and she isn't good enough or strong enough or just enough to be their friends. Probably partly because the one friend she thinks she has is a bully.) and dives hard into work. She still doesn't know what to say to Rin and freezes up a lot.
That leads to a fantastic scene in chapter 18 with Izumo and Shiemi in the garden and Shiemi positively sobbing about being a useless friend and not being strong enough to help like she wants and Izumo telling her she's really strong and able to talk about friends and her emotions without getting embarrassed and that she's stubborn and strong as a weed and Shiemi, who has clearly not gotten enough praise in her life just glows and determines to be as strong and stubborn as a weed.
It's a vitally important moment for both these girls. Izumo is kind and doesn't turn it cruel and sees how strong Shiemi is and helps Shiemi see herself as strong too. Izumo has done a lot to break Shiemi down but she is also, arguably, the one that did the most to build her back up too.
She dives back into her work to the point she inspires Rin to try harder on his own training because he is lazy and she isn't, and he admires that.
At this point Shima has decided that to keep going on his own path in the laziest way he can manage that ignoring Rin was too much work so they're just going back to before and acting like nothing ever happened. Rin is drunk and insults him in this with the list.
Rin confronts Konekomaru later and finds out what happened to Konekomaru's family and Konekomaru begs Rin to leave Ryuuji alone because he is dealing with a lot of stress. Rin (correctly for once) realizes that Konekomaru will absolutely be his friend if he can show that his flames aren't a danger. If he puts in the work to get control of those, he can be friends. Rin goes off determined to do that.
Ryuuji and Shiemi are now the only two who haven't had their Rin moment, and they firmly busy in their own stuff. Rin still thinks they're avoiding him because they're mad at him and blaming him for the Blue Night stuff and they're simply not. At no point does he ever really seem to get that he's assuming stuff incorrectly about all this either.
Ryuuji does some not at all stealthy spying and follows Juuzou to the Keep to find most of the staff unconscious and gets himself in the middle of the theft of the Impure King's last eye. Mamushi betrays them to Toudou and states that it is because of Tatsuma that she is. That he has failed them as a leader and conspired with Mephisto by giving away the sacred relic of their temple (Kurikara) and letting the son of Satan have it.
She is not entirely wrong, and she is not entirely right. She is very wrong about Toudou, but they both escape to cause more havoc elsewhere and leave Ryuuji to finally catch up to Tatsuma.
We have been building for several chapters at this point that Ryuuji and Tatsuma do not have a great relationship. There is a lot of frustration and confusion and hurt in it. A lot of history and pain and Ryuuji is trying to get his dad to tell him anything. To deny the allegations if they're not true and do something to help with the fact that one of their members just left.
Tatsuma refuses to. We later learn why and it sucks, but it doesn't lesson the hurt in this moment. Being unable to explain something does not mean that your actions, justified or not, did not and do not hurt someone.
Ryuuji, seeing his dad turn his back on him without even a hint of an explanation to all the terrible accusations and all the pain and trauma around them, pleading for some kind of explanation to anything, plays the only card he has left.
His father has already all but disowned him for the cram school, so he returns that. He warns that if Tatsuma leaves now and like this, he might as well not bother to come back because Ryuuji will no longer (can no longer) consider him his father.
Rin, who has kind of snuck into this dramatic meeting, overhears this and has a violent trauma induced reaction.
Now, Rin has trauma and it is entirely understandable why hearing those words would make him react dramatically. That does not excuse the violence he reacts with. You enduring trauma and having triggers and painful emotions does not give you the right to inflict violence on someone else.
And inflict violence Rin very much does. Once again flaming up some too, not at all in control.
This was not Rin's fight to get in the middle of. I will die on the hill that others do not get to determine what a child can and cannot do in their own parent and child relationship. Others can offer opinions and advice, but they do not get to order or dictate the relationship. They are not part of it and cannot possibly know what it is actually like. This is the same sort of mentality that tells people who have had to make the immensely difficult choice to go no contact with a parent that they should try and make up because it's hard to be a parent like it's easy to be a child and under the parent's control and guidance. Ryuuji has a lot of reasons to have made that ultimatum, and while we will learn a lot more about why Tatsuma has failed as a parent and leader, the reason does not absolve or eliminate the failures. He has failed Ryuuji multiple times and at this moment, tied by a cruel fate, he has to fail and hurt him again.
He did not have to choose to do it this way though, and do not forget that.
And Rin knows nothing about their relationship. He is putting his own reactions and motivations on Ryuuji who does not have them.
Rin is in the wrong in this moment. I will not back down from that either. Rin hurt his friend and revealed himself, and in the next panels defied Shura and continued to try and fight Ryuuji and make him understand that you can't disown your father because you can't take that back--
And it is in this fight that Ryuuji is first made aware that when Rin talks about his dad, he has not been talking about Satan. Rin was raised by someone else. They still don't learn the real story yet, we're not really told when or if they do get the full story about Shirou, but you can see him realize something happened to whoever raised the twins, and it was bad.
Rin gets knocked out and arrested and Ryuuji is sent to ice his swollen face and he will have the injuries Rin inflicted on him here through the entire rest of the arc.
And I am now over 5k words so I'll try and wrap this up some. I'm going to have to post the Yukio half on another post xD
Rin gets a letter that tells him that Tatsuma and Shirou were in cahoots about the sword (look, Mamushi was partially correct) but that the sword did not have Karura in it like it was supposed to. He also finds out that Tatsuma wants him to kill the Impure King. Mephisto then shows up and locks him away giving him a death sentence. Yukio has to leave with that knowledge to try and stop the rising Impure King before he infects and kills all of Japan.
Tatsuma goes and shows that he had made a pact with Karura and that the Suguro line has always guarded the secret that the Impure King was kept sealed under the temple by Karura. That were he to be reunited with his eyes, he would rise again. Toudou wants to get Karura so he did all of this to get Tatsuma to reveal Karura.
Tatsuma is stabbed through the back of the throat and Karura mostly devoured, and the Impure King is rising and reforming and going to poison everyone.
Shura gives the letter to Ryuuji and Kurikara and offers the camouflage ponchos to go break Rin out if they want, and Ryuuji and Shiemi are the only two who do not hesitate for even a moment to go and rescue him.
The jail freezes them and gives nonviolent Shiemi a moment to shine. She confronts her own self doubts and goes to find Rin and coaxes him back out, showing she knows he won't be a danger to her by embracing him and his flames. She realizes that her fears and self loathing caused her to only think about her own emotions, and not how he was feeling (something Rin could also very much stand to do) and she immediately switches to comforting and encouraging him.
Rin busts the prison with style, Konekomaru says he's ready to be friends, Shima and Izumo state they're only here on Shura's orders, and
Rin still doesn't get it. He still has no idea what Ryuuji is dealing with or why he's upset about any of it. He has spent this entire arc trying to find his dad and trying to help the sect, and failing every step of the way. He has tried to help everyone around him in any way he can and show that he can be depended upon and trusted.
Rin has never opened up to any of them. Rin demands that they lean on him and listen to his advice and accept him entirely, and gives them nothing in return for that vulnerability and openness. He doesn't talk about his own life or emotions or thoughts. He keeps conversations light and easy and doesn't even tell them that he was raised by a guy that's now dead. He shoves himself in conversations and dynamics that don't concern him all the while demanding trust, and then will not let them in in return.
Ryuuji is seeing that so clearly now and it is hurting. How can you trust a guy who won't trust you back? How can you trust someone you thought was one thing who never showed you who they really are and still won't be open and real with you? Who has enough power at every moment to level half the world and is emotional and stupid and impulsive and won't be real with you?
Rin has been under a death sentence and told he had to keep his heritage a secret, but even outside of that, he really doesn't talk about himself. He doesn't open up to his friends like he expects them to open up to him. Neither brother is good at expressing themselves (and a lot of that is because they weren't raised to be that way. Shirou did his best but had a lot of limitations too.)
He demands they trust him wholeheartedly but will not trust them in return. Or he hasn't shown in any way that he does trust them.
This arc, at its core, is about lies and how those and trauma can and do make relationships messy. How even ancestral drama can go down the line and get us caught in cycles of it. But it also shows that we can do the work to get past them, and that it's messy and painful and loud and not always easy to see what's right and wrong while we do it, but we can get past it and move on together. We can make terrible mistakes and seek forgiveness and understanding and sympathy or empathy and try to do better. We can laugh in a field of disease and trust entirely on someone because we know we can even if the world is falling down around us and it doesn't make sense.
Neither Rin nor any of the exwires or Yukio are a villain in this arc. Even Mamushi and her cruel words and betrayal are not a villain in this arc. Everyone acts kindly and selfishly or in fright or confusion or in motives that are entirely misunderstood. They're all dragging their own emotional baggage with them and they're all getting tangled up and not listening, but they still strive on and strive to understand and talk it out when they can, because they care about each other and getting it right.
To act like it's as simple as "The exwires bullied Rin!" is naĂŻve and robs Kato's story of so much richness and deprives the later arcs of so much character value she built starting here. Kato does a beautiful job of building all of her characters and giving them rich personalities and motivations and flaws and she shows us them through Rin sometimes, but she also gives them a lot of time without him at the forefront. She gives him flaws too, and a lot of wrongs, and that's why he's such a powerful and alive protagonist for our series.
You're free to dislike who you like and love who you like, but I do so encourage anyone who thinks the exwires were villains in this arc to really dive into the manga. Read through all the scenes and ask yourself why did Kato show that? Why is this character thinking that? Why did the character react that way? Kato gives us so much richness to dive into and to see so many people not do that and to take such quick and often incorrect or fragmented interpretations of the events is heart breaking and honestly robbing those people of a really good story.
Rin was wrong in assuming that everyone hated him and assuming that it was as simple as trust. He was wrong to try and force things and to try and force his own interpretations on others. It was only once he started to listen and hear what they themselves were saying that things got better. Now some of this is just the mess of the anime between season one and the start of season two, but a lot is just misinterpretation by the fandom. It can happen to anyone, but that does not mean it suddenly becomes factual because of that.
It's been at least six thousand words and I don't know if this came across as clearly as I wanted it to, but I hope it encourages those who haven't to dive in deeper. It's a rich arc with so many fascinating moving parts in it. I've barely brushed on Tatsuma, Juuzou, Mamushi, and Mephisto in this and their plots are all entirely interesting and add so much! Expect a Yukio and Izumo and possibly Shiemi follow up at some point, lol. Probably just as long though I'll try to be more concise.
If you read this far, thank you! You deserve to crash with the rest of the exwires in Toraya on a nice futon.
#ao no exorcist#blue exorcist#rin okumura#ryuji suguro#ryuuji suguro#aoex#shiemi moriyama#izumo kamiki#kyoto arc#long post#essay post#raven rant#i could easily do another post this length on the second half of this arc#and a post on tatsuma himself#and five more on ryuuji#but i'm trying to keep myself at least a *little* contained xD

random hermitcraft/ life series headcanons cause my brains rotting over both ;^)
OVERALL:
- after each life series all the members come back to hermitcraft and throw some form of a house party
-no one rlly dies on hermitcraft, they just tend to gets lots of injurys(broken bones, sprains, concussions, all the fun stuff)
- they definitely have an infirmary there somewhere
-each smps like a city, for example hermitcraft and empires smp r neighboring cities
INDIVIDUAL:
- Joel, Grian, and Jimmy are all siblings cause i said so
-grians oldest, joels middle, jimmys youngest
i imagine a good majority of them played some sport/ activity before coming to hermitcraft so heres some cause idk y this has been plaguing me:
bdubs: volleyball, golf
cub: some form of student council maybe??
doc: golf, lacrosse (definetly js whacks ppl w his stick)
etho: ice hockey, lacrosse
false: field hockey, track
gem: field hockey, wrestling, lacrosse
hypno: hockey
iskall: wrestling
scar: student council w cub (convex ;))
grian: tennis
jevin: football, wrestling
impulse: football, shotput
joehills: yearbook/ newpaper club(idk i get the vibe)
keralis: soccer, gymnastics(i could see him js doing a roundoff backhandspring out of nowhere dw abt it)
mumbo: golf, photography club
pearl: swimming, cross country
rendog: THE theatre kid
skizz: football, basketball, baseball
smallishbeans: soccer, volleyball, baseball
stress: cheerleading, wrestling, volleyball
tango: baseball

cleo: field hockey, softball
bigb: swimming(idk i get the vibe)
inthelittlewood: theatre kid, soccer
lizzie: field hockey, cheer, lacrosse
smajor: cheer, golf
solidarity: soccer, tennis
these could go for a highschool au or anything but i imagine they did these in highschool and then move to âhermitcraft cityâ or smth and they still like practice all these andn stuff
monthy hangouts are set up by the magic mountain group, usually consisting of movies and games(always sleepovers at someones base)
cleo is the best cook on the server, she host bi-annual seever wide dinners (w the help of beef and false for cooking)
bdubs and joel draw out there bases together, only time youll see them not beefin w eachother
the redstoners r covered in burn marks due to redstone lighting at wrong times or js blowimg up
cub and xisumas are the servers doctors, running the infirmary if needed
if a hermit gets a cast, crutches, a boot, splint, etc, gem, bdubs, keralis, skizz, and stress make it a goal to decorate it as much as possible(they have a competition to see who can get it done first)
after parties, xisuma, impulse, hypno, and false are usually the ones to make sure everyone gets home, being âdesignated walkersâ(they dont drink so they can walk everyone home)(no idk where im coming up w this stuff either)
team zits definitely have movie marathons weekly(they play uno to decide who picks the series)
mumbo and grian love watching dance moms(holly is mumbos fave, kelly is grians fave)
doc, etho, beef, and gem play eachother in lacrosse all the time, getting way to agressive each time (always some form of an injury outcome)
jevin is a weirdly good baker, makes the best cakes(taste and decoration)
pearl is rlly good at anything art related (loves painting/ drawing other hermits doing whatever)
ren makes the server put on plays (hes director and the main character in every one)(hes hires whatever hermits he can get to also act in them)
75% of the times tango sneezes, something catches on fire (theres fire extinguishers everywhere imaginable)
xb is the fastest swimmer on the server by a landslide, every hermit has tried to best him but he always wins by atleast 2 seconds
zed collects little trinkets, and leaves them in peoples bases as gifts

hello, can you recommend some stories where they are co workers and hide their relationship from their colleagues. Thank you
Hello, anon! You're very welcome! Here are some fics that fit what you're looking for...
Have Love, Will Travel by @kingsofeverything
Rather than spend the summer working at their desks, Louis and Harry are given the opportunity to crisscross the country together in a tiny camper, filming their adventures for a YouTube series.
It soon becomes obvious to their viewers that thereâs something more than friendship between them. Eventually, they figure it out.
Caught In Your Gravity by @lululawrence
It felt like the blood froze in Harryâs veins even as he got a bit lightheaded. He hadnât even made it two practices, only one of which he was remotely in charge of, without giving it all away and now he and Liam were both absolutely fucked.
âShit,â Harry breathed out. âWho all have you told? Does everyone know? I thought I covered it better than thatâŠâ
âNo, no,â Louis said quickly. "Theyâll figure it out soon enough, though, because theyâll get used to you changing things up, but youâre only going to trip over your so called Americanisms for so long before they realize itâs because you donât actually know fuck all about football.â
Harry sighed. âYeah. I figured. I just need to bullshit for long enough to allow Liam to get the situation figured out from his end.â
âRight, which brings me to my entire point. I think we can find a mutually beneficial arrangement with all of this.â Louis leaned forward. âYou need to learn the ins and outs of the sport incredibly fast. I can help you with that.â
âWhat do you want in exchange?â
Or, an AU inspired by a 30 second trailer of Ted Lasso that doesn't actually have much in common with the show at all.
The Boys of Summer by @afirethatcannotdie
âI meanâŠweâre gonna have to sneak around anyway, yeah? Like, with that whole rules thing that I guess weâve decided to ignore. Might make it a little more fun this way.â
AU. In which Louis is a reluctant sports coach, Harry's a fellow counselor who wears tiny yellow shorts, and camp rules say they're forbidden to date.

How would the mercs.. let's say â Demo, Snipes & Engineer act if they are father's? Your writing is really good!!
âMercs as fathers!
Genre: fluff
Characters: Sniper, Demoman, Engineer
Hi anon! I wrote for a prompt pretty similar to this, so you can check that out too if it interests you! That being said I will still drop a few headcanons here! Enjoyyy!
Sniper
Sniper had a relatively good upbringing, so he is well adjusted enough to make a good father.
Still pretty anxious that heâs doing everything wrong.
Is honestly just afraid that his kid will turn out to be antisocial like him and be outcast, he prompts them to get involved in extracurricular activities often. Wonât force them though.
Sniper is very supportive of his kids, if they have some strange fixation/interest he will do anything to make sure they can continue with it. Will also try and get into it himself so he can bond with his kids.
Most of his fatherly love is shared in quality time, he likes to spend most of his hours with his kids even in silence, he just loves them so much.
Protective papa bear, this much we know.
Doesnât let his kids around the other mercs, thinks their crazy will rub off on them.
Engineer
As I have said before I think he would make a really great dad.
Teaches his kids very hands on life skills, they must know how to fix a car at least.
Likes cooking them breakfast in the morning, as I feel like bacon and eggs is like one of the only things he can actually successfully cook.
Supportive, doesnât really care about anything so long as his kids are happy and safe.
Likes to have his kids with him while he works, itâs important quality time for him and it keeps him from getting too sucked into what heâs working on.
All the other mercs become what is essentially uncles to his kids, he brings them around semi often. He understands itâs dangerous work though so he doesnât let them get too involved.
He loves it if his kids turn out to be very artistic, might try and teach them all music, wants them to try at least one instrument for a year to see if they like it.
Heâs got this father thing down.
Demoman
Heâs got a lot of issues to work out before he can become a father.
I do feel like being a dad would really put his life in order though, he would definitely drink a lot less. He doesnât want his kids to be an all messed up from having a drunk dad.
Wants his kids to feel connected to their Scottish roots, frequent visits to keep them immersed in the culture.
They spend a lot of time with grandma, she absolutely adore them to the moon and back, Tavish has to fight her at the end of the night to get them back. They often whine because they want to stay with grandma.
Demoman likewise keeps the other mercs in his childrenâs lives, he genuinely believes them to be good role models. Well most of them anyways.
Is the super playful dad, think Bandit Heeler from Bluey. Will go to insane lengths to make sure his kids are having fun, even at the risk of embarrassing himself.
Urges his kids to be involved in some kind of sport or extracurricular, he wants them to have structure.
Canât cook for shit, so he takes them to diners and restaurants frequently. They love it though so thereâs no harm, itâs good quality time.
His kids are rambunctious but so is he, so heâs got this.
Thanks for your request! Short and sweet, I love these guys so mucchhh.

i cannot stress enough that even if you intend to do sports with your dog, even if you intend to work your dog you should get a type of dog you can enjoy living with WITHOUT sports and/or work. Dogs cannot do sports/work forever. Sometimes they need a break from sports/work due to injury. That is just a reality and you are going to have to live with that sportless/workless dog (even if temporary).
#dogblr#dog opinions#look. i just think people get dogs to DO sports#rather than get dogs they enjoy and do sports because they enjoy said dog#my enjoyment of my breed's quirks (including negatives) does not falter if they are unworked#me: again getting on my 'teach sport dogs to live regular dog lives' pedestal#there's a balance yall#anyways my breeder posted videos of slash's mom and grandma at 11.5 and 13 respectively still looking amazing and having fun#just doing walkies and zoomies and stuff#old lady things#and there's just as much enjoyment in THAT as there is in that accomplishment of good work/good sport

also Iâve seen some (well a lot) photos of dani & sete together and like were/are they friends? obviously I know about the honda connection + them both being spanish but not much more then that. kinda hilarious that dani was/is friendly with both of themâŠâŠ
time to bring back the world's funniest photo
this is a genuine work of art. quite possibly one of the greatest photos of all time. I'm in love
yeah dani hired sete in 2017!! that's what gives us that great moment where valentino forgets about jerez 2005 with sete in the room - like that's why sete is even attending pressers in the first place. this is what sete had to say about it start of 2017:
honestly this is one of my fave sete interviews, I've had it in my drafts for a while to discuss but I might as well throw it in here. so yeah, him and dani have known each other since dani was a kid!! which will have been partly due to the honda link - they were also both gresini riders in 2004-05, if in different classes
plus they had the spanish link, back when that was like. something a little more noteworthy. they've regularly trained together for years!! dani had already asked sete to be his coach for two years!! they have a "great relationship"!!
but yeah obviously we do have to address the valentino of it all. "in recent years [dani's] dropped a little, as a result of bad luck. when you try many times and don't succeed, your enthusiasm and motivation are less" uh huh...? like, say, when someone puts a curse on you and however much you try and try and try again, you can no longer win another race? it would be horrible if that curse gave you all manner of ill fortune, yeah? that sure would sap your enthusiasm and motivation, wouldn't it?
note too that the phrasing for what sete's attempting to give back to dani echoes what he says valentino still has: enthusiasm and motivation. the joy and the will. sete believes nobody should attempt to become the 'anti-marquez' - the very phrase implies a single chosen challenger to finally take down the sport's current king. focusing too much on that person can only come to your own detriment. you'll eventually become your own main rival... eventually, you'll defeat yourself, and your enemy won't even have to raise a hand. dani/sete parallels isn't the sort of thing you'd necessarily arrive at yourself, so it's always kind of the involved parties to do your work for you. what valentino and marc never lost was their 'inner spark' - and the two of them can cause the kind of misfortune for others that gradually eats away at their 'enthusiasm and motivation'. if you've been marked out to defeat one of them... well, beware
and. of course. "we've always had a great relationship, given that we've shared so many great moments together" buddy WHAT are you talking about. ALWAYS??? sete has a funny habit of acting as if he's like, worked very hard to repress everything that happened to him between 2003 and 2005 as some kind of weird ass curse-induced trauma response. but it's actually the "I've never done any interviews in which I've talked badly about valentino" that's the most revealing - which is a) kinda debatable, but at the same time b) ... well, yeah, sete has been awfully restrained in what he's said post-2005! which has always been super annoying to me, as someone on a fact-finding mission about that era, but it's also... it makes perfect sense, doesn't it? of course, sete was still committed to managing the image of that rivalry. so determined to be respectful that he's avoided giving his side of the story. and sure, you can take him at his word that he's let bygones be bygones, that he really only remembers the positives of that time, but... it's complete and utter bullshit! he's finally started talking about THIS decade (transcribed for the sete post):
if there's one good thing that came from him going on that bloody three hour australian podcast, it's in him opening up about how obviously extremely not Over It he is:
if you think that valentino has had a lasting negative impact on the sport, that he made it more dangerous, that this is something that can directly be traced back to what he did to YOU... then why are you NOT 'talking badly' about valentino? why didn't you complain about the overtake at the time, publicly rather than feeling frustrated with race direction in private? but that's sete all over, isn't it... casey, for all his sins, has not exactly been quiet about valentino post-retirement - and while I'm also not going to ascribe any especially altruistic motives to that, while he does also obviously sell a very particular version of their story, you at least don't get this kind of blatant disparity between his stated principles and his public output. it's like when commentators were talking during assen 2004 about that magazine cartoon, the one with the gag that valentino just had to put a mirror on the back of his bike to defeat sete. (which is obviously very mean-spirited, yeah, and there's plenty to critique in how sete was portrayed as this vain foppish pretty boy.) sete has always, always cared too much about appearances and it was always going to be what killed him in that rivalry. he truly is the perfect foil: valentino manipulates image to his own ends, while sete is a slave to it. and that's how we've somehow ended in this situation where both parties have been perfectly willing to let the facts of that rivalry dissipate into obscurity over time. valentino erases sete from the narrative of his career as an act of punishment, whereas sete lets himself be erased because he does not wish to be associated with something so very ugly. and thus the story sinks over time towards oblivion
anyway. sorry. uh, back to dani. reportedly that was quite a close partnership he had going with sete:
a rich kid with a fancy bike collection to the last. here's a joan instagram post about said training:
and here's another interview sete gave about dani - unsurprisingly he's once again very complimentary:
"we have noticed that the machine is developing in a certain direction" uh huh? something about riding for honda, who you believe are geared only towards making one of your rivals succeed? must be tough, eh
probably a complete coincidence, but as it happens 2017 was the closest dani and valentino ever really got to a public spat - over valentino's sturdy defending in aragon. "if he's not happy, he has to race alone" indeed. obviously, dani did not end up winning a title - though 2017 is still the closest he'd gotten since 2013. he was very much in that title fight, pretty much until the wet race at misano, even if as the fifth of five contenders... so 13 of 18 rounds in, not bad. (incidentally, that's also the race that ended valentino's title aspirations by dint of missing it entirely.) and when dani was pushed out of honda and decided to call it a day in 2018, here's what sete had to say:
more recently, dani's spoken about the advice sete gave him late in his career:
"in my last years" does make it sound like he's being put down, eh. so yeah, a rider coach, but probably more importantly a friend. wonder if they're still close
#i fully buy that sete is so weird he couldn't even properly shit talk valentino. and dani's not the type to go hunting for the gossip#if you're in that sport long enough chances are you will eventually get close to someone who hates valentino#but dani did also have like. two decades' worth of positive interpersonal interactions to draw on in that regard#jorge said it!! valentino's well liked for a reason!! lord knows SETE liked that kid enough to go partying with him on ibiza#when they ran into each other in 2000 pre-season (their first canonical interaction) sete was 27 and vale was ~21#and sete decided that cocky little shit who completely ignored his very sensible riding advice was worth befriending. sweet really#//#brr brr#batsplat responds#sete is literally the PERFECT valentino foil and it's so fitting he's the one nobody pays attention to#the legend valentino immortalised within the sport and the rival who revealed the most of him who has been forgotten#it's fun and neat when things work out like that!! like valentino being the perfect casey foil#marc still needs a better foil but i'll revisit that one after 2026#curse tag

the idea of a Gayest Player In The NHL bracket at all is already in poor taste to some degree bc i get everyone loves to make the âtheyâre so gay for each other frâ jokes but the condition of the actual league and its actions right now is like. you do understand why calling these people Gay Icons (Positive) for funny haha jokes is just. at best inappropriate timing, yes? but the idea of literally including one of the guys who got pride nights cancelled with his homophobia is just. can we take a minute to realize that hockey fandom doesnât take place in a void completely unconnected to reality and see that this is just. a Really Bad Look. at best.
#gav gab#saw someone reblog the actual bracket intro post with among other things#âmom come pick me up theyâre calling tseguin a gay icon in 2023â and like#LMFAO. YEAH. FOR REAL. YOUVE SEEN WHAT HE SAID ABOUT THE SEDINS YES?#anyways get outta here with that shit#people have gotten real confident with the âtheyâre about to fuck at centre iceâ thing and saying hockey is a Super Gay Sport#which is a fun joke to make with your friends online ig#as annoying as i find it generally#but you do understand this isnât real yes#and i know the bracket is not making claims about reality#but what it IS doing is including players like eric fucking staal#in a bracket for Gayest NHL Player#and the real life actions of staal actively make the sport unsafe for queer athletes and queer fans#stop mistaking jokes about hockey players fucking each other or writing rpf about that as any kind of activism#or any kind of actual reflection of the nhl#how do you think this is an appropriate thing to do for so many reasons lmao how are you including some of these guys on this#even before you get into some of the other insane behaviour going on in this bracket existing#âI didnât pick the contestants!â you did you. youâre in charge.#âjust hope they get voted outâ donât include them at all whatâs wrong with you#why do bracket creators always act like itâs some kind of mandatory moral imperative they include every single thing nominated/voted in#you have agency here lmao. use it. fucking spineless.#rpf for ts#adjacent enough anyway#homophobia cw#why would you do this#lmfao the brief scroll of that blog i took the amount of âpropagandaâ thatâs just âthis guy has friendsâ#wild. genuinely wild.#one request id like to make to the liveblogs this year too on a vaguely tangentially related note is#reign in your blatant and unrepentant amatonormativity please#from your local aro

I feel like there should be a week where I just get to live life as a cis guy no explanation to see if it feels better or worse. then go back to my own beautiful hips & tits and other people's horrible assumptions that I can cook. and no one has a memory of any of it. I want like an ice cream sample of different genders
#i would miss my body i finally got an ass after 25+ years on this earth it was exciting#that said if i could go to the beach take my shirt off and do whatever cis guys do. have a cold one with the boys or something#play a sport and be bad at it with no judgement#own pants that fit. be bisexual in a fun new flavor#go to the store & have people assume oh that guy is just kind of socially awkward rather than all these mental gymnastics they are doing to#fit me into girl mode#that would be fun. just a little vacation#i think i would be hot as a weirdguy#i could start a gaming channel and get a million followers for being normal about women and having gay tension with all the bros#just guy things#i don't even game why is this part of the dream

Summer may be ending soon but yâknow whatâs never ending?
Thatâs right!- This Maniacâs Bloodlust and Competitiveness! Yippeeeeee~~~
(Based on that one ff14 red chocobo meme..)
#tunasal oc stuff#tunasal art#yunaci! oc tag: yuna#tunasal yuna#tunasal tunazz#yunaci! oc tag: seraphina#viola in the bg like âfuccckkk this poor fella is about to get his shit rocked and not in the fun way..â#poor gal does not receive enough pay nor vacation time for this sheet#âah yes a nice weekend by the shore enjoying a variety of beverages with my dear friends!!â#and then said friends proceed to destroy some chumps at volleyball and also like#literally destroy some of their bones#I donât think ser quite has the whole conserve strength to not break literally everything#down yet- so if she isnât paying attention she will destroy literally everything around her-like a bull in a china shop#thatâs just what happens when you accidentally seal a calamity in a kid and just go âwelp this wasnât what we wanted..â#âoh well!! have fun in the wilderness kid try not to get eaten by beasts!â#and then that kid doesnât get properly socialized or trained really..#then that kid grows up into this chic#who youâd think would be rather well adjusted based purely on appearances?? but like she has a lot of repressed anger+then thereâs the#whole dormant calamity thing..#so yeaaa extreme competive nature stemming from a fervent need to improve and get stronger#plus alooottt of repressed frustrations AND a sport revolving around#projectiles= a recipe for disaster and paperwork lots of paperwork..#sera is also not allowed to play unoâ#inette is also there! if only for the icey treats she was promised if she helped- and also maybe cus she just likes to feel included#sheâs also lowkey enabling ser haha

i saw the d3 acha coho tiktok and saw your tag about how to spell s(h)(e)(a)(w)n and as I watched it with the roster pulled up next to the video so I could figure things out I HAD to come tell you that it was spelled 'shjon' because LOL. but then I saw your other post and saw that you not only already figured it out but you had a DIFFERENT tag about the 8-3 game last night. i know what game you're talking about; i listened on the radio. i've been sad ever since and it would make me feel better to tell you that you're not special - everyone takes advantage of our terrible powerplay and yet we REFUSE to stop drop passing. sorry you definitely didn't expect a salty shiny helmet fan in your inbox just please be gentle with us tonight. Christmas isn't for another month - stop lighting up our goalie :( although huge congrats on winning the tournament last year i was cheering for you so hard to defeat the Evil and you did :)
âfeeling shrimp emotions right now as i try to convey the whiplash this ask gave me⊠first of all đ„șđ„°đ that you were gonna come tell me how to spell shjon and then đ«” SAME GAME???
but GOD the experience of âlisten i knowâshhhhh shhh shhh shhh i havenât even started yetâi KNOW it looks cool when you do a no-look behind the back pass. it does! when it works. you know what we look like when it doesnât work? fuckinâ STUPID!!!!â is universal. me đ€ you đ€ yelling at our hockey team to stop doing stupid drop passes!!!!
(p.s. wish: granted! most of it was the fact that your baby goalie did better than [redactedx2] and thatâs all the shop i will talk here for purposes of not doxxing either of us lmaooo)
#RIP ANON IâM SO SORRY YOU WERE CATCHING STRAYS IN MY D3 HOCKEY TAGS đđđđ#my vendetta against [redacted] has literally nothing to do with your hockey team too itâs from a completely different sport đ#does it help to know that a and i regularly debate your uniforms and i AM a shiny helmet defender i think theyâre so fun#i just wish it was more incorporated!! put a little shiny in the uniforms!!! you donât need that [redacted on the pants] to be THAT color#make it match the helmets!!!!! anyway this happens literally every time. i go BUT I LIKE THE PIZAZZZZ & a goes BUT THE SHINE I CANâT SEEEEE#& then we both agree (bc i said so) that the color scheme needs work. i understand the reference itâs the execution!!#anyway i put a variety of devon levi mouth open HUNH meme / BEYONCĂ??? /đčđ reaction images to try and convey how your ask found me#but none of them fit right lmao the sheer ???!!!!????? specificity of getting clocked#but also like. then immediately being like ok weâre best friends united by a common enemy đ€đ„°đ„° making out w/consent w/tongue#liv in the replies#have not been able to truly rotate the joy you having the roster pulled up to tell me how shjon is spelled is bringing me im giggling#kicking my feet doing a little spin etc etc. i love yâall and the amount to which i just. ask things in my tags & yâall ANSWER me is đđđ„čđ„čđ#also if you listened on the radio again i donât know if you saw the handshake line shenanigans but PLEASE come to my dms i Have Questions#about to go put [redacted] and [redacted] together in aliceâs teammates generator and i found an old note too??? about different guys???#and homoerotic behaviors. whatever is in the water with this match-up itâs chippy and also makes me đ#i think a blood feud may be beginning⊠cannot wait for the next match-up itâs gonna be fun

One of the weirdest things about finding out you're traumatized/mentally ill/neurodivergent as an adult is looking back at all the very obvious signs in your childhood and realizing none of the adults responsible for you were paying attention
#it really is a mindfuck#like all of yall were really asleep at the wheel here#me: exhibiting very obvious symptoms of neurodivergence and mental and physical illnesses#ever parent teacher coach and other authority figure i interacted with: shes just Like That.#fun fact i when i was in elementary school starting in 2nd grade id have to walk to the front of the classroom and read a section of the#board at a time and then go back to my desk and copy it from memory because I couldn't see well enough from my seat and not a single#teacher said or did anything about it until i was in fifth grade. guess who needed glasses.#like they didn't even ask they just let that happen until my fifth grade teacher was like. what are you doing. and i told her i couldn't#read the writing from two rows back and she told me to tell my mom i needed glasses#anyways ms. [redacted] you're the only valid mfer in this place#not even gonna get into the number of coaches who called me lazy or out of shape in middle/high school (even though i was playing multiple#sports a year) when i told them i couldn't breathe after running for only a minute or two. guess who has sports asthma.#maybe this is just being the middle child but like of you're not going to pay attention to me can u at least not immediately call me a liar#when i say something's wrong maybe#those aren't even mental/neurological those are very obvious and easily demonstrated physical issues and you STILL didn't say anything#not even gonna get into all the very obvious signs of mental illness and neurodivergence
