Gestalt: Steam & Cinder review:
It's a solid 7/10 Indie Metroidvania, let down by some boring/weak design decisions.
The game does feel good to play, like, the gameplay loop is very tight and effective. The dodge roll's a bit too long for most enemies, but that's tolerable, and I liked the "slash-slash-slash to charge meter, shoot shock bullets to stun enemy, then kill enemy" loop (though it fell to the wayside in the midgame, and the final boss doesn't get stunned at all).
The talent tree is good, even if you're going to fill it out completely by the end of the game it's fun to pick and choose what you want to unlock first. I don't know why you'd show every ability you get from the start, though. It kills some of the mystery, and shows how uninspired the abilities actually are.
Speaking of killing some of the mystery, the ending's bad. The story ends about one zone too early, on a cliffhanger. They even dangle a last-second ending choice in front of you, which never manifests. I beat the final boss a second time, hoping for a secret ending, to no avail.
The game's title is a lore thing, I get that, but it's very strange to have the words steam and cinder in your title, have characters talk about how the city runs on steam, and then make your predominate mechanical aesthetic be... Tesla-coil electricity?
The deuteragonist who spends about half the game following the PC around is so painfully generic-looking that I was convinced he would die, get mutated, or get an evil costume switch. Nope, the dude keeps his brown button-up spotless for the entire game. Seriously, look at our two leading characters:

6. Having the collect-em-all side objective be corgis was fun.
Overall, I'd rank it alongside Timespinner, as underwhelming but solid indie Metroidvanias.

bad at fighting games & haven't kept up with new stuff much, but i do still have a nostalgic spot for them (played them a tonnn growing up, since my brother got as many as he could find lol) loved the sprites in SVC Chaos & it's nice to see it again~
Tumblr media
some of these character designs are pretty cool 0:
Tumblr media
i've already heard some buzz for this one, but more importantly:
Tumblr media
bird alert
speaking of:
Tumblr media
protagonist bird alert
Tumblr media
'nother one i've already heard some buzz on
Tumblr media Tumblr media
nice homegrown charm to this one; looks like a lot of love went into it
Tumblr media Tumblr media
squirrel game? with bird alert?? u bet i'm smashin the wishlist button
Tumblr media
i'm torn--love that i'm seeing more ports of niche wonderswan/gba/etc stuff coming out these days on the other hand, def some anime tropes in here that i just don't like lol;; (also pls tell me that smoothing filter can be turned off 😭 i'm fine with it existing for those who prefer it, but at least make it toggleable)
Tumblr media
wow!! bird alert is strong this week!!!
Tumblr media
this is a very oddly timed port because i was literally just looking this game up recently? can't remember why though. (oh you know what, i think maybe i saw an old ad for it in one of those retro game mag tumblrs. and thought the concept was neat in spite of the terrifying face lol)
Tumblr media
another one i'm torn on;; on the one hand, cyangmou art on the other hand, it sounds like most of the other elements leave a bit to be desired still....cyangmou art....
Tumblr media
i had this wishlisted for a while & it looks like it finally came out! decent reviews too

Gestalt: Steam & Cinder for PC launches May 21
From Gematsu
Tumblr media
Side-scrolling action RPG Gestalt: Steam & Cinder will launch for PC via Steam on May 21, publisher Fireshine Games and developer Metamorphosis Games announced. A release date for the console versions was not announced.
Here is an overview of the game, via Fireshine Games:
About
Inspired by 16 and 32-bit classics, Gestalt: Steam & Cinder fuses tight 2D platforming and exhilarating combat with an engrossing, twist-laden narrative in a stunningly handcrafted steampunk world. Join Aletheia and a vibrant cast of characters as they race to discover the secrets of the Steam City of Canaan. Clobber armies of Clockwork golems and hunt horrors that slither through depths once forgotten. Thwart the twisted schemes of Canaan’s corrupt overseers, the nefarious Comitium. Fight for mankind’s survival and reveal the dark and dangerous truths riveted into the very foundations of the Steam City.
Enter a World of Rust and Ruin
Step into the shoes of Aletheia and tread the path of the Soldner, an elite mercenary of Irkalla who lives one job at a time. Take up the sword and gun, combining a slew of melee combos and deadly gunplay in staggering feats of skill that will leave your enemies reeling. Chase down a frenzied mutant charging through the grimy stalls of the Irkallan Black Market, leap across the molten pools blazing in the eternal furnace of Fornax, and fight off hordes of blood-drunk Raiders that prowl the fathomless depths of the Scrap Sea in search of their malignant god.
Shatter the Chains of Fate
Canaan is vast, and inside its swirling steam lie innumerable mysteries waiting to be unraveled. After a routine job goes awry, Aletheia sets out on an epic journey to uncover ancient enigmas threatening the very foundations of the Steam City. Challenge powerful new rivals and catch up with old friends as you carve your path through Canaan. Take on side jobs to earn a bit of extra scrap and delve into a history lost to the vagaries of time. Or maybe you’d just like to wash down your worries at Vincent’s Pub and listen for a rumor or two…
Unleash Your Inner Flame
Dash, dodge, and double-jump to keep out of harm’s way and stay in one piece. Wield a furious and fearsome array of abilities and grow stronger with each foe you defeat. Spend experience points to unlock new skills and trade scrap for accessories to customize your build and go toe-to-toe with some of the most formidable creatures to ever lumber beneath the copper sky. Hear that? The clang of a hammer stinging blood-red steel… The sinister murmur of heresies rushing through ancient pipes… Riddles echoing through vaulted halls of marble and madness. Sounds like fate has a job in store for you, Soldner—it’s time to earn your scrap. “Thine trembling works of Reason naught but ingots gleaming darkly by the light of a cindered heart—for what art thine flesh before the mother’s touch of flame?” —Dreams of the Steam Saint Anais, XXXIV, iii
“Gestalt: Steam & Cinder is a heartfelt ode to classic Metroidvanias and action RPGs, featuring enthralling combo-driven combat, a beautifully handcrafted world, and a story filled with incredible twists and turns,” said executive producer Jesse Cox in a press release. “After years of anticipation, I can’t wait for players to finally discover Aletheia’s adventure for themselves when Gestalt: Steam & Cinder launches on Steam next month.”
Executive producer Dodger added, “Working with Metamorphosis Games on the production of Gestalt: Steam & Cinder has been an incredible experience. From the very beginning, the team has been committed to creating an exciting action RPG that keeps players captivated with an engaging story and stunning pixel art. I’m thrilled for the game to be shared with the world on May 21.”

Feb 2023 NextFest Top 5!
I played 18 game demos during NextFest, here's my top 5!
Honorable mentions:
The Last Case of Benedict Fox: Gorgeous graphics and interesting plot, but I'm seriously worried that the combat will suck.
Pocket Mirror ~ GoldeneTraum: A very polished rpgmaker game.
Worldless: Very pretty, minimalistic Metroidvania. I embarrassingly got stuck within 10 minutes.
5. Gestalt: Steam & Cinder
Tumblr media
A classic SoTN-style Metroidvania with beautiful art and a great soundtrack. The combat could use some polish, but I like what I'm seeing so far!
4. Greedventory
Tumblr media
"Greedventory is a challenging roguelike RPG being ironic about genre habits like adventurer's thirst for shiny loot, quests and kicking barrels in dungeons." I was charmed by this game's humor and old school style. It reminded me of playing something like Sam & Max Hit the Road, but with combat.
3. Dust & Neon
Tumblr media
A twinstick shooter with randomized loot. And a robot cowboy! It has a good gameplay loop of combat and exploration. The combat was surprisingly fun (and ammo/health drops are generous). It did have the Borderlands problem of "can't find a gun better than what I have", though.
2. Planet of Lana
Tumblr media
Think Inside, but mixed with The Last Guardian and a Ghibli film? This is a cinematic puzzle platformer and I thought it was pretty and fun. I couldn't stop petting my little companion.
1. Full Void
Tumblr media
WOW. I was stunned by the pixel art and atmosphere of this puzzle platformer. It was very cool to play and I can't wait to get my hands on the release.
