The Lithuanian military evaluated “the German Leopard, the American Abrams and the [South] Korean Black Panther tanks,” according to the minister.
The key evaluation criteria the military used to select its preferred vehicle included the price and maintenance costs, operational environment, mobility, safety, adaptability, protection, firepower, and interoperability, Anušauskas said.
He did not disclose the estimated value of the planned procurement and the number, or variant, of Leopard 2 tanks to be purchased(..)
P.S. Very good news! glad for the commitment of our southern neighbours to strengthen their defences!
Abrams is very heavy tank, expensive to operate, and the Americans wouldn't sell the most modern version either...! Also, we don't know who the American people will vote for president! If the Kremlin-obedient Trump's gang comes to power there, then the acquisition and operation of Abrams tanks may become problematic. Actually, when buying American armament or any other armament produced in the West, it is worth buying in time the sets of spare parts necessary for the repair of equipment...! We never know what kind of "useful idiots" the Kremlin will elect in the next election...
Maybe a better source of arms purchases would be South Korea: 1) they better understand the threat posed by Russians and Communist China: 2) they maintain a sufficiently high production capacity of the military industry...
In any case, it would be much better if modern tanks were produced in one of the Eastern European countries...

Which Tanks are Germany, UK and the United States sending to Ukraine in hope to Change the Course of War
Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States are to send tanks to support Ukraine in the first phase of a coordinated effort by the West to provide dozens of the heavy weapons to help Kyiv counter Russian aggression as international reluctance to send tanks to the battlefront falls away. Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskiy applauded Biden, commenting on Twitter that “the free world is…

Bundeswehr General: almost half of Leopard 2s out of service
Nearly half of Germany’s 18 Leopard 2 tanks fallen into disrepair due to inept replacement of parts, Suddedeutsche Zeitung reports.
General Christian Freuding told Suddeutsche Zeitung that Ukraine is out of capabilities to repair the tanks in accordance with German operating and maintenance rules, which subsequently leads to increased wear and tear of parts and longer downtime.
Freuding also highlighted the inconvenience of the Lithuanian maintenance centre, as the journey from the Polish-Ukrainian border to the centre would take 36 hours. These problems significantly hinder the operational recovery of tanks and the maintenance of their combat readiness.
In order to address these difficulties, Germany is actively engaged in discussions with the Ukrainian industry on the possibility of conducting factory repairs in Ukraine to address the maintenance and readiness issues of the Leopard-2 tank.
Leopard-2 tanks are supplied to Ukraine not only from Germany, but also from many European countries.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, after his December 2 visit to Kyiv, shared a message on X directed at Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“My message from Kyiv to Putin: We’re in this for the long haul. Our support for Ukraine will not waiver. We will stand by the Ukrainian people — for as long as it takes,” Scholz wrote.
During his visit to Kyiv, his first since June 2022, Scholz held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and announced that Germany will provide 650 million euros (over $670 million) in military aid to Ukraine, to be delivered in December. The package will include IRIS-T air defense systems, Leopard 1 tanks, and drones.

The Wall Street Journal reported on January 24 that US President Joe Biden is preparing to send "a significant number" of Abrams M1 tanks to Ukraine and that the White House may announce the delivery as soon as January 25. German newspaper Der Spiegel reported on January 24 that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz decided to deliver at least one tank company (14 tanks) of Leopard 2 main battle tanks to Ukraine in an unspecified time frame. Poland likely will send Ukraine Leopard 2 tanks following Germany’s decision. Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak stated on January 24 that Poland formally requested Germany grant permission to transfer Poland’s Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stated that Berlin would not interfere if Poland wanted to send its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. British officials confirmed on January 16 that the United Kingdom would send Ukraine 14 Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron stated he would not rule out the possibility of France sending Ukraine Leclerc tanks on January 22.
American tanks, German tanks, British tanks, and French tanks, surely it would simplify logistics to have one type of tank

The oldest of these is the Leopard 2A5, introduced in 1995, which is armed with a 120mm/L44 smoothbore main gun. The improved Leopard 2A6M arrived in service in 2001 and features a longer-barrel 120mm/L55 gun, as well as improved mine-protection measures and other enhancements. The latest model is the Leopard 2A7V, in use since 2014, with a range of other improvements, including an air conditioning system, advanced optronics, and programmable ammunition. You can read more about the differences between Leopard 2 variants here.

Tank-Man, a question concerning Ukraine. Much of their domestic manufacturing base remains intact to continue production of Soviet style tanks. However, they are also gaining experience with various NATO standard tanks, and mutual manufacturing contracts with various European arms manufacturers. Should Ukraine switch to entirely Western-style tanks once the war is over? And if so:
EASY MODE: which tank should they choose (no limits) and why? HARD MODE (optional): You are not allowed to pick Leopard 2. Same question as above. CYBERPUNK LAZOR MODE: Same as above, but you can only pick from next-gen tank designs that are either prototypes as of today, or drawing board designs.
GO!
Damnit frogman, you know me too well. Yes, alright, I was going to say the Leopard 2a7, okay? Are you happy? But since that's off the table, I think Ukrainian doctrine could go one of two ways. One, they could keep the fleet of modernized T-80s they seem to be quite skilled with, and develop them further as time goes on, and hopefully with Russian aggression a distant memory, they'll eventually be able to develop their current experience with the T-80 and western tanks into a more hybrid design ethos.
However, if I had to pick a western tank for Ukraine to adopt off the shelf, I'd suggest getting a shipment of M1 Abrams, as most of the western powers aren't as keen on exporting their MBT technology as Germany is, and the Leopard and Abrams are the two main western tanks that Ukrainian tankers have experience in at the moment. So, Abrams.
As far as currently-in-development tanks? If test beds count, Abrams X all the way. It is, IMO, the most promising prototype of the 4th generation. However, if not, the K2 Black Panther is my next choice, because that thing's C4I capabilities give me a tingle in my pants.
I hope that answers your questions, and if not, just ask clarifying ones in the reblogs.

Daily Wrap Up January 20-22, 2023
I had family in town, so I was AFK for a few days.
Under the cut:
AFP reports the Russian army as saying that its troops have launched an offensive in the Zaporizhzhia region in south-east Ukraine. Russian forces claimed to have taken “more advantageous lines and positions” during the assault.
Russia's defence ministry said for the second straight day on Sunday that its forces were improving their positions in Ukraine's southern Zaporizhzhia region. "During offensive operations in the direction of Zaporizhzhia, units of the Eastern Military District took up more advantageous ground and positions," the defence ministry said.
The Ukrainian military says Russian forces continue their assaults on Bakhmut and Avdiivka in Donetsk, two towns that have been shelled persistently since last summer but remain in Ukrainian hands.
Germany would not “stand in the way” of Poland sending Leopard tanks to Ukraine, foreign minister, Annalena Baerbock, has said, in what appeared to be the clearest signal yet from Berlin that European allies could deliver the German-made hardware. Asked in an interview with French television station LCI what would happen if Poland sent its Leopard 2 tanks without German approval, Baerbock replied through a translator: “For the moment the question has not been asked, but if we were asked we would not stand in the way.

Russian forces claimed to have taken “more advantageous lines and positions” during the assault.
The region has been the scene of intense fighting in recent weeks. Its governor, Oleksandr Starukh, said Russian forces had launched more than 160 shelling attacks overnight.
In a Telegram post he said 21 towns and cities had been targeted. One woman was killed and two other people were injured.”-via The Guardian

"During offensive operations in the direction of Zaporizhzhia, units of the Eastern Military District took up more advantageous ground and positions," the defence ministry said.
It claimed to have inflicted casualties and destroyed equipment including Ukrainian fighting vehicles, howitzers and two U.S.-made HIMARS rockets.
Reuters was not able to independently verify Russia's battlefield accounts. Ukraine on Saturday said Russia's claims of progress in Zaporizhzhia were exaggerated.
Fighting in recent weeks has centred around the town of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, where Russia's Wagner mercenaries and Ukrainian forces have been locked in a battle of attrition.
Neither side has claimed major movements on the southern front since November, when Russia pulled out of the city of Kherson.
With the war now 11 months old, Ukraine has said it believes Moscow is likely to attempt a new offensive in the coming months.”-via Reuters

The General Staff said Sunday that the Russians "conducted unsuccessful offensives in the Avdiivka and Lyman direction. They continue to attempt an offensive in the Bakhmut direction, increasing the intensity of their use of aircraft. In other directions -- they are on the defensive."
It said that Ukrainian units had repelled attacks in both Luhansk and Donetsk regions, identifying nearly a dozen settlements. One was the village of Novoselivske inside Luhansk, indicating that the Ukrainians have consolidated their control of that district.
There had also been shelling of settlements in the Kharkiv region that were liberated in September.
The General Staff said Ukrainian missile and artillery units had struck two areas of Russian troop concentrations, without specifying where.”-via CNN

“Germany would not “stand in the way” of Poland sending Leopard tanks to Ukraine, foreign minister, Annalena Baerbock, has said, in what appeared to be the clearest signal yet from Berlin that European allies could deliver the German-made hardware.
Asked in an interview with French television station LCI what would happen if Poland sent its Leopard 2 tanks without German approval, Baerbock replied through a translator: “For the moment the question has not been asked, but if we were asked we would not stand in the way.”
Heavy diplomatic pressure has been building on Berlin to send its tanks, or at least allow countries that bought them from German to re-export them. As the producer of the Leopard tanks, Berlin has a veto on their transfer.
But at a special international summit on Friday at the US military base in Ramstein, in south-west Germany, Berlin had stubbornly declined to take a decision on whether to give Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, leading to growing frustration from Kyiv and its allies.
On Sunday, Poland’s prime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, criticised Germany’s failure to supply the hardware to Ukraine.
“Germany’s attitude is unacceptable. It has been almost a year since the war began. Innocent people are dying every day,” Morawiecki said. “Russian bombs are wreaking havoc in Ukrainian cities. Civilian targets are being attacked, women and children are being murdered.”
He went on: “I try to weigh my words but I’ll say it bluntly: Ukraine and Europe will win this war – with or without Germany.”
It had been hoped in Kyiv and the US that Germany would allow Leopards owned by countries such as Poland and Finland to be re-exported. However, Germany’s defence minister, Boris Pistorius, said despite heightened expectations, “we still cannot say when a decision will be taken, and what the decision will be, when it comes to the Leopard tank”.
Morawiecki said he was waiting for “a clear statement” from Berlin.
Poland has announced it is ready to deliver 14 Leopard tanks to Kyiv. Morawiecki had said that if Germany continued to refuse to supply the tanks to Ukraine, “we will set up a ‘small coalition’ of countries ready to donate some of their modern equipment, their modern tanks”.
In an interview aired after Baerbock’s, the German defence minister, Boris Pistorius, said that he expected a decision soon on the delivery of tanks to Ukraine. Speaking in an interview on Germany’s ARD TV on Sunday, Pistorius said that Germany would not make a hasty decision because the government had many factors to consider, including consequences at home for the security of the German population.
In a joint statement Saturday, the foreign ministers of Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia had also urged Germany “to provide Leopard tanks to Ukraine now”.
James Cleverly, the UK’s foreign secretary, weighed into the dispute during an interview earlier on Sunday with Sky News.
“Of course, I would like to see the Ukrainians equipped with things like the Leopard 2 as well as the artillery systems that have been provided by us and by others,” he said. “I will keep having those conversations with our Nato allies and friends, to facilitate the donation of the best military equipment to Ukraine to help them defend themselves against this brutal invasion.”
During a visit to France to mark 60 years of postwar Franco-German cooperation, the chancellor, Olaf Scholz, said Germany was supporting Ukraine and would do so for “as long as necessary”.
France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, said his government was examining the case for sending Leclercs, the main battle tank of the French army. “Nothing is excluded,” he said, while noting that such a move would be coordinated “collectively” with allies.
As European governments squabbled over the issue, Russia claimed to have made advances in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region.
After months of stalemate in the south-eastern oblast, Moscow-installed officials said the front was now “mobile” while the Ukrainian army reported that 15 settlements had come under artillery fire.
“Attempting to probe our defence, the enemy has activated artillery fire,” wrote Oleksandr Starukh, governor of the Zaporizhzhia region of south-eastern Ukraine, on the Telegram messaging app.
Russia fired on the region 166 times through the day, Starukh said, with 113 attacks aimed at populated areas, killing one civilian.”-via The Guardian

Development of Leopard 2 Tank
Development of Leopard 2 tank began in 1960s, when United States and Germany were intensively working on their project of new tank under label MBT/KPz-70. At that time, MBT-70 had the highest priority in both countries, so much so that one article forbade both countries from developing any other tanks in parallel with it. MBT/KPz-70 project was very ambitious, with goal of creating a new concept…

What do you think about some people saying that Germany is secretly on Russia's side since it hasn't yet given Ukraine Leopard 2's?
All the right people are mad about this, at least
This government is probably the most anti-German government we've had yet, but its one redeeming aspect is that chancellor Scholz has been seriously pulling the brakes on plans to send more and heavier weapons to Ukraine.
Sadly in the bigger picture this won't amount to much, as we're still making a hard pivot back towards being an American satrapy with no aspirations towards an independent foreign policy. The government is full of extreme NATO shills like Baerbock and Strack-Zimmermann and we've just had German officials in Davos acting like building Nord Stream was a shameful crime that should be part of our national cult of guilt, rather than a sensible attempt at sovereign foreign policy (and they still don't want to know who destroyed it).
Whether or not tanks are sent eventually (I think they will be), the damage is done - our leaders are actively unlearning all lessons of the past 20 years about America's trustworthiness and geopolitics.
