Weltschmerz: a german word that means
"the depression that arises from comparing the world as it is to a hypothetical idealised world."
basically: its when you compare your current situation to a better, more ideal situation and then you feel angry or sad about that. i guarantee you that you've felt this at least once before in your life. whether it was because you felt left out with friends, lost a job opportunity, got a bad grade on a test, etc.
theres always that sense of "what if" or "could/ would".
this kind of feeling can bring you down and make you feel kinda depressed. so what do we do when we feel this?
we must remember to stay down to earth. stop fantasying about "could be" or "would be". take life as it is and work for more.

I was often asked by guests from America about the difference between a Burg and a Schloss. You can see both types of castle in this photo. The left building complex in the distance is a Burg, the right one in the foreground is a Schloss. Usually, I explain it this way: A Burg is a defensive castle, a Schloss is a bragging castle.
The photo shows Schloss Arnstein in Neu-Eichenberg (Hesse) and Burg Hanstein (Thuringia). Between both sites ran the border between West and East Germany, and Burg Hanstein was used as a watchtower by the East German border guards. This view has become a symbol of the German reunification.

There should be an overly-long German compound word for when you listen to the cover of a song first and then the original sounds weird to you.

i HATE the fact that there isn't a specific verb & noun for "being silent/saying nothing" in english, it genuinely pisses me off so bad rn. bc in german you have the verb "schweigen" and the same word can also be the noun "Das Schweigen" and it's so useful!! AND I NEED IT SO BAD RN!! bc i don't wanna use "the silence" i CANT use "the silence" bc it's NOT silent, there's music playing in the scene, but they're not talking and i need a fucking noun for that. i hate english so much i'm going back to writing in german fuck this shit

In German, we have this word for worst case scenarios in nuclear plants: GAU (or Gau) - it's an abbreviation/acronym/initialism of "größter anzunehmender Unfall", which roughly translates to "biggest assumable emergency". Over the years, a superlative was coined: Super-Gau - for the worst of worst case scenarios.
You can use it for everything, by the way, not only nuclear plants... "If the right wing party wins - that would be a Super-Gau..."
Now I've seen several ppl on the internet talk about how they find the superlative so annoying, because, well, the biggest emergency anyone can think of is in and of itself the biggest emergency anyone can think of, so the "super" is redundant.
But. Listen here, fuckers. If life has taught me anything, then that whatever emergency or worst case you can think of - life will laugh at that and come up with bullshit you can't even imagine! Life's always very "super" and you should get used to it.

One of the few good thing about having to learn about the details of German law is that I get in contact with beautiful German legal terms such as
Beschwerdegegenstand
Urteilsbegründung
Prozesskostenhilfeantrag
Versäumnisurteil
Gütergemeinschaft
Zurückweisungsbeschluss
Gesamthandseigenum
Idk I'm weird like that.

hehe can I get a German word?
Oh hey, yes, you absolutely can! 😄 Would you like to have one for yourself or would you like to join a collective one? I actually hadn't thought about that, it does sound pretty neat to give different words to different people. 😋

There should be a German word for the sense of embarrassed accomplishment you feel when you narrowly prevent some important possession (phone, glasses, jewelry, etc) from falling into the toilet.

There’s this word in German ‘schadenfreude’ , which means the pleasure or joy someone gets from another person’s grief.

For some reason it remind me of when Jaun Eliya
said “ lehza shikayat ka tha, magar saari mehfil
samajh gayi ki mamla mohabbat ka tha..” because
how am i still fine by being rude to this person I’m
insanely in love with. How am i not considering the
hurt that they are getting, how is my heart not
breaking as i break theirs?

What is it called when you are excited about a subject of a conversation and you want to say a lot about it but as you type or think of your reply you realize that you're not only going to say a lot but it's extremely nuanced and probably way deeper than the surface layer of discussion the participants were intending so you edit it down to the bare minimum until you end up saying nothing at all because you remember in the past people would give you weird stares or demeaning comments about saying too much because 'it just isn't that deep' so you just nod along in painful silence knowing that you will never feel safe sharing your interests with other people?
I don't know either, but I'm almost certain there is a German word for it.
I'm lonely.
