my connection to the german national team has certainly changed as my attachment to hertha grows stronger BUT the song “moonrise kingdom” by angel haze just brings me back to the sheer devotion i have felt for that team and the weird messy hard times we’ve been though in the last few years. especially “they think they’re saving you/they think they’re saving you.... you gotta run! or they’ll catch us and stop us from growing/you gotta run. hold my love in your heart and keep going” and one of the last lines hits me especially regarding my recent feelings for the team: “I hope you learn to fall in love again”

Day 22: Change of Personalities

A)I've definitely played around with the idea of Maria and Thomas swapping personalities, but I've never played around with Maria and Thomas swapping personalities with Fred and Xavier. Then Jasmine would swap with Destiny, Amanda with Biff, etc. It'd be kind cool to see something like this, so maybe all write it as a one-shot or something, who knows.

Day 23: Sirens and Sea Monsters

A)I have a whole AU already plotted out with this concept called; Pirates and Mermaids. Maria becomes the Captain of her mothers pirate ship the 'Saint Liberal Chihuahua' after her parents and the crew are kidnapped by a mysterious nobleman. Thomas is a siren, but he is completely unaware of this fact due to a necklace he wears that makes sure his physical siren traits don't appear. Jasmine is a sea witch who is the only one who knowns Thomas is a siren as her father was the one who put the magic on the necklace to stop Thomas' transformations. There's a lot to this AU that I need to write at some point.

Day 25: With Your OC

A)I have quite a few OC's for the PnF & MnT worlds, especially fankids, that you can find on my other post's titled; 'Fankids Pt.1' & 'Fankids Pt.2' if your interested. I also have some other post that mention OC's, but it's mostly very briefly.

Day 26: Superstars

A)Maria, Thomas, Xavier, Fred, and Jasmine are all superstars in the future in their own ways. With Maria being a famous Opera Singer, and the rest of them being famous for the rock band; Église des Gémeaux. Though, Jasmine is also known for her karate, and Fred for his puppetry.

B)When it comes to who their favorite celebrities' would be; I made up two celebrities that Thomas and Maria have crushes on.   -Maria's is a transgender, three-time Olympic gold-medalist in swimming; Matilda Kaiser Kuhn from Drusselstein. Matilda, born Kaiser, began her career as a swimmer in high school where she won nationals in her Senior year. She then went on to get bottom surgery before winning her first Olympic gold-medal in the team, swimmers competition. Matilda married her husband, Jurgen Kuhn, who was the photographer for her first Olympic competition. They now live on the English countryside with their daughter, Viktoria Kuhn, son, Karl Kuhn, and German Pointer, Duxi.   -Thomas' is a famous, French, street artist; Beau Dax Toussaint. Beau began painting when he was five years old, and was heavily inspired by art found at the Louvre. In middle school he gained major traction for his portrait art, and graduated from high school with a stable career as a street artist. At twenty-two Beau adopted his only child, Delis Toussaint, and the two live in Roussillon, France.

C)I'll probably work on a celebrity crush for Jasmine at some point as well; I'm just not sure what kind of person they'd be yet.

Day 27: Crossover

A)I've thought about several crossovers with these characters, specifically; BNHA, Scooby-Doo, I have a whole connected fairytale universe I'm working on where PnF & MnT characters replace fairytale characters like Tarzan and Anastasia!

Day 28: Villain's

A)I always picture Maria as ‘Scar’ from the ‘Lion King’, Thomas as ‘Oogie-Boogie’ from ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’, and Jasmine as ‘Ursula’ from ‘The Little Mermaid’; When I think about these characters as existing Villain's.

B)When it comes to them as their own villain's. I imagine Maria as someone who forces people to shower her in praise and entertain her with humiliating games. While Thomas is more cold, and calculated, working behind the scenes. Thomas is really the mastermind behind everything, and preforms horrible experiments on people. He just let's Maria have her fun, cause he's still madly in love with her. Maria knowns about Thomas evil deeds, and usually gets envious of the attention he gives his experiments, especially when he puts them over her. She even insist he do them on her instead of strangers which he is tempted by as he finds her much more interesting to study, but he refuses. He only has one of her, and his experiments usually end in heavy casualties on his subjects part.

So in this paperwork is the ridiculous argument that the USWNT couldn’t compete in the men’s World Cup or beat the German MNT so they deserve less pay than the USMNT.

However, the USMNT can’t compete or even qualify for the men’s World Cup and they also couldn’t beat the German MNT.

Sooo... what you’re saying is that actually if they were hypothetically competing in the same world, they’d be earning the same results. Hence, shouldn’t they be paid equally?!

I had a 100% agree with you on your USWNT. I think for the first time scorers, it was a very exciting moment. The others could have celebrated with a little bit more grace. However, I do think that the USWNT is being judged more harshly than a male team would, and I think it’s because women are associated to this notion of “compassion” and “sentimentality,” which causes people to feel more sorry for Thailand as “sensitive women” and to judge the US for their “lack of compassion” & “ruthlessness”

i understand where you’re coming from and i agree that some of the criticism is sexist and/or racist in origin! i’ve seen my share of infantilization directed at the thai wnt today and that’s been exhausting too

honestly as a former athlete it really comes down to a question of sportsmanship for me. as much as i personally dislike the usw*t i would never expect them to be anything but ruthless and i don’t begrudge them their victory. and i think there are a lot of people who are conflating that with the continued celebrations. those celebrations were what left a really bad taste in my mouth, not because they were giving women a bad name, but because they were giving americans a bad name. and frankly the us’s reputation doesn’t need to be any worse right now.

you really can’t compare this to ger-bra 2014 at all because of the immense disparity between the teams, but for all the german mnt’s faults, the way they behaved during that match was precisely the way i expect any overwhelmingly dominant team to behave. this is probably cultural for me, too, but the idea of celebrating like the usw*t did is unimaginable to me. i expect better of any team regardless of gender.

ok ya know what? i don’t care if the germany mnt is not good in the next year, the next ten years, or the rest of my measly life. i’m going to continue being excited to see their games and be proud of the german talent in the leagues. we have a grand, illustrious past and there’s no reason it can’t happen again! but until then, I’m still gonna be that ridiculous blog cheering ‘los gehts’ when we’re down 3-0. winning is sure nice but it never was everything.

(PnF) Headcanon #11 Thomarie Nitpicks #2 Pt.1 Clothing

This is sort of a sister post to post #6 & #7, it mentions characters from post #6, and is connected to my current series of post about the problems I have with the MnT(Marie and Thomas) Universe. I want to make it clear that I like these characters...to an extent, but to another extent I don't. I want the best for them as they were a big part of my childhood, and so in this post I want to make some tweaks to their clothing and personalities, as I find them currently sporadic and dated.

Maria's Child Clothing: Okay, so a lot of people have made the claim that Maria's design is generic which I will not deny. It's a blatant ripe off of her mothers clothes with a change of color palette, and while I enjoy the idea of Phineas designing her clothes to be that way, it's a waste of potential(as are most things I will mention in this post). Maria canonically adores France, and in my headcanon was born there, so I think some Parisian style could be added to this design. I'd draw instead of writing about this, but I have no artistic talent. For starters, based on my research(as I myself am not French)puffed sleeves are a common occurrence in French clothing culture, so giving Marie puffed sleeves in place of her mothers regular ones would be nice. Instead of basic shoes, ankle boots are also a common item in French clothing followed by white and/or black tights. Now, ironically enough the style of belt Isabella has on her clothes is similar to a French Skinny belt called a Maison Boinet, so just change it from being one color to a light brown with a metal clip, and it can stay-as can the main outfit. Lastly, to quote https://leoncechenal.com/french-girl-style-guide/ 'And I think the ultimate goal of all French girls is to find their own style (what they like and what they don’t) and to stick to it.', so in summary this doesn't need to look perfect or fancy it just needs to look natural.

Maria's Teen Clothing: Okay, this one is even worse in my opinion, but the whole one color thing is killing me! So, for this I did a COMPLETE recall and came up with this; A purple beret, orange bow wrapped around her neck mimicking a Parisian scarf, dressed in an orange & purple horizontal striped sweater dress that hangs off her shoulders, and a pair of black single buckle ballet flats. She would have a gold chain-link belt to replace her Maison Boinet one, a cameo necklace of the Virgin Mary, and a gold choker with small bells. Based on my research actual Beret's aren't that common in French culture anymore, though ironically striped shirts and dresses are, but Marie's is canonically the one her mother wore in the episode 'Summer Belongs to You' and familial connection is super important to Maria-so I decided to keep it. I kept her Garcia-Shapiro bow as I am appalled they tried to get rid of Isabella's in AYA(Act your Age)! Vivian clearly still has her from when she was young, and I believe every Garcia-Shapiro who wants one should keep them to some extent throughout their life! Off shoulder tops and dresses are pretty common in France as are sweaters, so I gave Maria an off shoulder sweater dress. And, ballet flats are some of the most common footwear for woman in  France, they have many styles like the single buckle that don't actually look like ballet flats we American's would usually associate with ballet. The jewelry wore by French woman is wore all the time, and is rarely below the quality of 10-carrot gold. Layering necklaces of different sizes such as a cameo necklaces and a choker is normal, and chain-link belts are considered appropriate for any and every outfit. Chokers are a bit longer than some might expect them to be, and I went with a cameo necklace of the Virgin Mary as I headcanon Maria to be a serious Jew. Lastly, make-up in the French world is some of the most neutral in color and shade, so I gave Maria a soft pink lip and nose bridge blush at best.

Thomas' Child Clothing: I heavily dislike Thomas' child design. It lacks any personality in my opinion when compared to Ferbs or Vanessa's. I appreciate that it isn't a ripe off like Marie's, but that doesn't make it good or interesting. Also, this ties into my biggest problem with Thomas, but he's too...boyish. There is nothing wrong with having a practically boyish character, but that kind of personality and style is better used on a character intended to be boyish, and not characters who happen to be boys. I mean Thomas is the son of one of the most headcanon'd nonbinary characters in the whole show, and one of the most headcanon'd bisexual's in the whole show. This is why I mentioned these characters being a bit dated. They definitely came out before LGBTQ+ representation became popular in the fandom-at least compared to the extent of today. So, for Thomas I want to propose a few heavy changes to his child design, starting with...SKIRTS. I petition Thomas to have an either black & white(or purple and green), plaid skirt that reaches his knees. This style of skirt is popular in both British and German(Drusselstein) clothing culture, and is something his family would so support! I mean the potential Thomas has for normalizing clothing as gender neutral is being completely wasted! A white polo shirt inspired by his fathers and his original design underneath. A tweed blazer-of the same color scheme-which is considered always in style in Britain, and the Haferlschuh which are the most popular type of shoe found in Germany-and suit any outfit. Add some tracht socks in white and you have the perfect style!

Thomas' Teen Clothing: This design wasn't horrible, I actually quite like the overall vibe it was going for, but it's not specific enough. I don't find this design to be more than a vibe; It doesn't go deeper than that when it could. So, I summarized it into this; Ripped up, leather pants, sleeveless, white turtleneck, high-heeled, black boots, and to top it all off a trench coat and leather satchel. Considering Thomas is the lead singer and bass guitarist for a classic/heavy rock band I think some ripped leather pants with a bell bottom are perfect. I kept the sleeveless, white classic turtleneck that came from his original design as I do think it's appropriate. I also wanted to pay homage to his mothers almost iconic heels by giving Thomas a similar pair himself; A pair of black, over the knee boots, with a stiletto heel. The trench coat MADE his original design, and the traditional leather satchel is a perfect accent to it, both are British classics in the world of fashion.

Thomas' Rock Outfit: I'm added a subsection for Thomas' clothes as we NEED to talk about his band outfit. I want to say this first, I don't like the original name for the band. Clair is a generic name that doesn't sound too rock-ish in my opinion. It's supposed to represent Maria as it is a French girls name, but it's too simple for someone like Thomas. So, I changed it to Église des Gémeaux which represents Maria in more ways. The name literally translate to Church of Gemini from French to English. It represents Maria's French heritage, her connection to her Jewish Religious roots, and contains a reference to her birth month of June-her birth sign Gemini. The band in itself is canonically represented by The Spill Canvas which is an American Alternative rock band which I also changed. I gave the band a more Eisbrecher/Queen style as Thomas is German(Drusselstein)/British. Eisbrecher is a German Neue Deutsche Härte rock band(translating to New German Hardness aka Industrial Rock), and most of us know Queen the British rock band known for helping to start the rock genre making them a Classic rock band. Major headcanon to this band I want to add, Thomas primarily sings in German(Drusselstein) as he himself has a heavy German(Drusselstein)/British accent. His canonical outfit is a leather top similar to his mothers teenage attire, some basic jeans, and some black boots. I have rewritten this design as such; Ripped up, bell bottom, leather pants, long-sleeve, purple, deep V-neck top, covered by a studded, leather jacket, and keeping his pair of black, over the knee boots, with a stiletto heel. Accent this outfit with some studded, leather cuff bracelets, silver chain choker, and industrial piercing as well as some crescent moon 2nd/Upper lobe piercings. Now, the style of rock/punk is highly personal and changes heavily from generation to generation, but as someone whose family is highly involved in the antique business; It can be expected that Thomas would have a classic rock style inspired by the band he loves such as Eisbrecher, Queen, The Rolling Stones, Mozart L'Opéra rock, Amon Düül II, etc. Some of the elements of his outfit repeat such as his pants and heels, though his deep V-neck is inspired by a picture of Queen. His studded jacket is inspired by MANY rockers of the past. And, his jewelry has a very punk aesthetic. His make-up can be expected to be heavy with intense eyeliner, mascaras, and aided with a plum lip to match his V-neck. While I do enjoy the Grunge style take for Fred & Xavier; I personally find it underwhelming for someone such as Thomas.

I'll end the post here for now as it's getting pretty long. I'll make a post about personality changes at a later point(likely my next post). If you have any questions, comments, etc about what changes I've made feel free to share them! If you have any expertise with French, German, British, or Rock attire and believe I've been misinformed than please tell me! I remind you I am not an expert on fashion, character design, and am only aware of American trends. These changes are entire based on what knowledge is available to me, and my own personal feelings about clothes and characters, but I'm open to learning! I apologize if my opinions come off as harsh, I am merely opinionated about things I enjoy, but I hold no ill-will towards anyone who thinks differently. At the end of the day, I don't own Marie or Thomas or Phineas and Ferb, and am merely expressing my freedom to make or suggest changes. I encourage anyone reading this post to do the same, and be has intense as you feel, of course WITHOUT being insulting of the people you disagree with. Thank you!

Adding a Graphics Card to the Amiga 500

Always after ways to push the trusty Amiga 500 to new limits, I discovered a post on the German A1k.org website about someone who had fitted a graphics card to his A500. This was a feat I felt I should replicate. I’m almost, but not quite, there. However, there were lots of hoops which needed jumping through first…

Carry on for the story so far!

First things first - what does a graphics card mean, in Amiga terminology? I already have an IndivisionECS in the Amiga, sat between the Denise chip and the motherboard, outputting lovely flicker-free, scan-doubled images and even up to 1024x768 in Workbench, with a bit of fiddling. Is that a graphics card? Well, no (or rather, not without doing some extra tricks). The Amiga has built-in graphics chips (the Denise chip on the A500) which handles the “native” graphics modes supported by all Amigas, the Workbench operating system and games. The IndivisionECS performs some neat tricks to make the output of the native graphics system compatible with modern(ish) monitors, and offer some enhanced features, but generally only offers the capability of the native graphics system. The big plus point for the IndivisionECS is that is it transparent to original Amiga software and will work its magic on all the classic Amiga games without modification. By “graphics card,” we mean a graphics system which is in addition to the native amiga graphics system. There were a couple of standards for doing this back in the day, but the one that’s most popular is Picasso96. This is where the journey takes us next.

Picasso96 implements what is known as ReTargettable Graphics, or RTG. This is a system for adding “hooks” into Workbench to re-route graphics routines from the native chipset to somewhere else - to a graphics card. The advantages of this are that it frees up the Amiga’s “chip memory”, used for native graphics, sound, and any else the Amiga’s custom chipset is up to. Using the graphics card’s memory is also faster, giving a general speedup to the computer as work is offloaded from the processor and onto the graphics card. This opens the door to higher resolutions and more colours to any program that supports the RTG system (or uses the Amiga’s API rather than hitting the native hardware directly).

Picasso96 is shareware and for a long time considered abandonware. It now belongs to Individual Computers, the people behind the IndivisionECS and some of the other cards I will need to get this up and running. There is supposed to be a pay-what-you-want deal in place for the licence but at the time of writing this doesn’t appear to exist yet.

So, we know what software we need. But what about the hardware?

Well, firstly we need to run the software, and for that we need to have at least a 68020 processor, rather than the slower/older 68000 that the Amiga 500 comes with. There are several solutions out there, to either replace the 68000 internally, or to add something on the side expansion port. For me, the side expansion port is the easiest, especially as I already have an ACA500plus in it. This all-in-one upgrade for the A500 adds Compact Flash readers, various versions of the Kickstart ROM (including 3.1), some Fast RAM and another expansion port, into which one can plug an accelerator from an Amiga 1200. And Amiga 1200 accelerators use 68020 processors (or better). I picked a budget-friendly ACA1221 (also from Individual Computers), which is no longer made in that particular format but offers an 68020 plus 63 Mb RAM and various speed options.

So far so good - but still nowhere to plug in a graphics card. For this, I will need an adaptor. Luckily the Amiga enthusiast and all-round nice chap Rob the Nerd had started on building such an adaptor - the Z-500. This goes between the ACA500+ and the Amiga500′s side expansion port, and offers one Zorrro-II slot. This is the expansion slot used in the Amiga 2000 (3000, and 4000). And graphics cards exist for the big-box Amigas!

The chain of expansions and adaptors looks rather ungainly, but we are at a point now where we can plug in a graphics card. Woohoo!

Here you can see the ACA500+, the Z-500 and the VGA cable coming out of the IndivisionECS. The ACA1221 plugs onto the back of the A500plus.

When it comes to choosing the graphics card to go into the Zorro-II slot, options are rather limited to either very expensive vintage cards or moderately less expensive modern cards. Of the moderately-less-expensive variety are the MNT VA2000 and the GBAPII++. Remarkably, these are both produced by (gifted) Amiga enthusiasts as projects. For my specific configuration, only the GBAPII++ will work, as it has 2MB of RAM on board, and the ACA500+ leaves exactly that much free in the Zorro-II memory space. The VA2000 has 4MB on-board, so it wouldn’t fit in the given address range.

There’s a pass-through cable for the VGA-out from the IndivisionECS, although I didn’t have the right cable on-hand so had to swap the VGA cable about. Plugging it in is straightforward, and installing the Picasso96 software is as straightforward as running the installer from Aminet. The drivers for the GBAPII++ card are also now available on Aminet too. Installation is fairly self-explanatory and involves a lot of clicking “Proceed” to accept the defaults.

The system works by adding new entries to the ScreenModes in the Workbench Prefs folder, which activate the new graphics modes when selected. I had a bit of a scare at first when there were no new ScreenModes available. This was solved by manually dragging the GBAPII++ monitor files into DEVS:Monitors and making sure the card was “attached” in the P96Preferences tool. A couple of reboots later, and I got a picture on the monitor connected to the card!

Disappointingly, there is something wrong with higher graphics modes beyond 800x600 at 8bit colour. These strange “ghost” images and general graphics corruptions make the display unusable. At 800x600x8 however, the picture is crystal clear and a marvel to behold. I have attempted reinstalling the software and running various debugging tools. 

Judging by the output of the memory tests, there is something wrong in the $28,0000 - $2F,FFFF and  $38,0000 - $3F,FFFF ranges. Interestingly, an 800x600x8 image would fit in the apparently working $20,0000 - $27,FFFF range, which I think explains why the lower resolutions work. Which gives me hope that the solution will be simple and speedily uncovered.
