Jaskier is sat at camp, DRENCHED. "You're lucky the drowners didn't start going for you!" Geralt was ranting at Jaskier, as he had been for quite a few minutes now. "How was I meant to know that the branch I was on was unsturdy?" "All the ways I've showed you how to check for that!" Geralt growls at him, which... Well, fair. "The worst part of it all is I lost one of my rings!" Jaskier whines, he glances a look at Geralt and sees a thunderous expression, thus he glances away again. "...I am sorry, Geralt. I didn't mean to get in the way." Geralt softens a bit and sighs. "Just... Don't do it again." The next morning, Geralt wakes Jaskier up by chucking a ring at his face. "Geralt! Oh thank you! However did you find it?" Geralt just grunts a bit but thankfully accepts Jaskier's praise and thanks for the rest of the day. "...Geralt-" "What? What is it?" "I- One of my rings is gone, I don't know what to do-" Geralt sighs. "Can't we just buy you another?" "No! This one was special!" It was one Geralt bought for him after all. Geralt slinks off and returns a few hours later, holding out the ring, much to Jaskier's delight. "You're so good at finding them!" "It's not that hard." Bullshit, Jaskier thinks. Jaskier is ripping his rings off in a rush in order to start tending Geralt, only to accidentally fling one toward the poor man. Geralt reaches up and catches the ring in mid-air, before grimacing as the movement had pulled at one of his wounds. "Oh, Thank you, Geralt!" Jaskier tosses a ring to Geralt one day and asks him to store it in a bag, safely. A few days afterward, Jaskier asks Geralt to find the ring in the bags and give it back. But then realizes Geralt is staring at his hands. He's waiting to be asked to get the other rings. With a look of... Excitement? Joy? "Geralt, do you really enjoy bringing my rings to me that much?" Jaskier asks, before cringing as it had clearly embarrassed Geralt. "It's not a bad thing! I think it's cute!" He says in a rush. It's official. Geralt loves to fetch. Like a dog. They now have a new routine at camp, that whenever they had nothing to do, Jaskier would toss some things, and Geralt would either catch them, or race after them as they soared through the air into the distance. Jaskier is bloodied and exhausted. His arms are tied in front of him, but he still can't seem to rip his gag off. His parents have sent for him, he just knows it. They probably have some noblewoman they want him to marry, or some relative died and they think it'll be a perfect segue into making him perform his duties. As if. Jaskier slips off one of his rings, and tosses it to the ground as the wagon pulling him starts riding off toward his birthplace. Hopefully Geralt is still just as determined to return the ring as usual.

Fanbinding: Hibernating with Ghosts by @fayet

Getting stuck in Kaedwen in winter had never been on Jaskier's plan.

Hyped to share photos of the set I made at the end of 2023 for the @renegadepublishing annual exchange! In addition to "Hibernating With Ghosts" these volumes include 30 pencil illustrations by @saeculorum-art, the fic's prequel Silent friend of many distances, and a song (The Siren Song) by @stillmadaboutpetra. I was over the moon that they all agreed to allow their work included so i could make this for the lovely Kitty / @perfectlynormalbooks (thank you for the intro to the wonderful fic!!).

This book was bound in Duo dragonfly cloth, with marbled lokta and hand-foiled cover accents. All art not by saeculorum is sourced from public domain woodcuts. I went a little harder than usual on the typeset, but it was a lot of fun and I finally had a good reason to use a vertical header (the chapter titles are SO LONG) and colored dropcaps (i was printing color for the art, anyway!). I justified my embroidery thread spending with a fun five-color color endband, and I colored the top edge.

I had a lot of fun making this and trying our a few different ways of doing things! Thanks again to everyone for a wonderful Renegade Exchange!

MCD HEADCANON WARNING:

Sometimes... Sometimes I make myself sad thinking about Geralt dying and Jaskier selfishly keeping his medallion even though witcher funerary rites demand that a witcher’s medallion be returned to their family because he can’t handle the truth and the medallion is the only thing of Geralt he has left and you can’t make him give that up—

Jaskier never taking it off.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Geralt’s supposed to outlive Jaskier. Geralt’s supposed to be fine. And it wasn’t even a battle that took him out like it should have been, it was a bloody infection. And Jaskier barely made it to Brokilon forest where he’s held by the dryads to say goodbye—he walked for days on end with nothing but his clothes and his lute—and Geralt never even knew.

Geralt died before Jaskier could tell him. At least he could say goodbye to his sleeping body. At least he could see him take his last breaths.

Yennefer says Geralt knew, thinking it would help Jaskier—but that just makes it worse.

Jaskier doesn’t sing for months.

And Vesemir only knows something is wrong when Geralt doesn’t return home for the winter, and come spring, he goes to find Jaskier, knowing the bard he’s never met but heard so much about would probably know where to find Geralt.

Jaskier was supposed to be beautiful, according to Geralt. This man was a shell. And Geralt’s nowhere to be seen. And then… it hits him. And all he does is hold out his hand expectantly.

And Jaskier silently moves away, hand over his chest. His voice shakes. “No. No, you can have it when I die.”

And Vesemir can live with that. Because Geralt loved Jaskier. And Vesemir tells him as much. And from Yennefer it’s a lie to him. But from Vesemir? From Geralt’s father?

Jaskier just folds under the grief and disappointment, sinking to his knees, and starts sobbing because he could have had him. And Vesemir just stares. And for the first time in centuries, he feels the urge to cry too.

jaskier really created a whole mythos surrounding geralt of rivia, white wolf, hero of the people, for the continent to adore and get invested in and then fucking wrote and performed her sweet kiss with the lines "I am weak my love and I am wanting. if this is the path I must trudge, I'll welcome my sentence, give to you my penance, garroter, jury, and judge" and then had to like. live with the fact that he admitted he's in love with the subject of his songs. every tavern he plays at the whole crowd is just side-eyeing geralt in the back like. um. hello. and he grunts and stomps up to their room. and then burn butcher burn comes out and the whole continent is like whoooaaa shit there's drama!!! jaskier is literally out here taylor swift narrating his whole relationship and geralt just has to trudge into town like. does anyone need a swamp monster killed? and the mayor or w/e goes hey aren't you the guy from the song, you really pissed that bard off what did you do leave him at the aisle or something. and geralt just has to be like. nope, must be a different witcher he's talking about. anyway swamp monster?

I need more Geraskefer fanfics with immortal Jaskier- like imagine Jaskier who's an immortal being who's been alive for centuries, and during those times he changes his name and like Yennefer and Geralt are just meeting him over and over again and only realize when Jaskier drunkenly admits it- (Bonus points if Jaskier thinks they already know and just don't talk/ mention it)
