HURRICANE HELENE RELIEF

Since I'm incredibly anxious and very much annoyed, I'm compiling this post as a sort of master list of relief organizations and individual fundraisers for those in the path of Hurricane Helene.

Many of the links I post on this won't be individuals, but I encourage those within the path to add their links to this post in reblogs! Likewise, if you have any organizations / volunteer / grassroots efforts y'all would like to share, please do so!

My list is particularly focused on widely accessible resources, as well as Florida specific resources since... I'm from Florida.

(INTER)NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS

American Red Cross - The American Red Cross is on the ground helping people as Hurricane Helene approaches land as a very dangerous storm. Helene may produce winds over 150 mph, a massive 20-foot-high storm surge and as much as a foot of rain. Prolonged power outages and tornadoes may occur. The effects will be felt hundreds of miles inland including in Georgia and the Carolinas.

FEMA Disaster Assistance Improvement Program - The Disaster Assistance Improvement Program’s (DAIP) mission is to provide disaster survivors with information, support, services, and a means to access and apply for disaster assistance through joint data-sharing efforts between federal, tribal, state, local, and private sector partners.

Roll Mobility - An application that equips wheelchair users with reliable information about the accessibility of restaurants, public spaces, businesses, trails, and parking areas. Good information to have on hand, especially for those evacuating from their home areas.

Warmline Directory - Providing extensive yet accessible resources that empower individuals to find the mental health and wellness resources they need through a directory containing accurate and in-depth information. For those unfamiliar: Unlike a crisis line, a warm line operator is unlikely to call the police or have someone locked up if they talk about suicidal or self-harming thoughts or behaviors. A good resource for individuals in mental distress due to natural disaster circumstances.

Food Not Bombs - Recovers food that would have been discarded and share it as a way of protesting war and poverty. They also reduce food waste and meet the direct need of communities by collecting discarded food, preparing vegan meals that they share with the hungry while providing literature about the need to change our society. Food Not Bombs also provides food to protesters and striking workers and organizes food relief after natural and political crisis.

Partnership for Inclusive Disaster Strategies - The Partnership for Inclusive Disaster Strategies (The Partnership) is the only U.S. disability-led, 501(c)(3) organization that prioritizes equity, access, disability rights, disability justice, and full inclusion of people with disabilities, older adults, and people with access and functional needs before, during and after disasters and emergencies.

I had to carry our pets to the neighbors and my disabled wife through five feet of water. Then, my elderly disabled mother and grandmother through the water. We lost all of our clothes and many of our belongings, and our landlord will be having us move out. We have nowhere to go, so today I'm asking for help from the kindness of the world. On September 27, after being trapped in a flash flood for 5 hours, my father, Jeffrey Fuller, and sister, Kayla Fuller, left with their lives ❤️ but lost everything else. My father had set his life up to be simple and enjoyable. He didn't have a lot extra, but he had everything he needed, and now all of that is gone. Unfortunately, he did not have flood insurance, and the older you get, the harder it is to bounce back from something like this. For a man who has always shown up for everyone he loves, he needs us to show up now. Please help my father rebuild.

Man I hate to do this but I'm in Valdosta, one of the cities hit the worse by Hurricane Helene. It's BAD here. In particular, there's no estimate of when we'll get power back. Word on the street is it could be a week or longer.

I work from home and going without power that long, I won't be making any money. Meanwhile my groceries are all spoiled in a fridge with no power and my car is on E. All the gas stations are down atm and when they're back up I KNOW gas prices are going to be crazy high because of all of this. In fact, EVERYTHING is going to be more expensive for a while because of this.

If you have anything to spare to help me with gas and groceries and just surviving this, I'd really appreciate it. If not, a reblog/share would mean a lot. Thank you ❤️

Hi. I'm Porter Henderson. This isn't about me, though. You’re going to see a lot of fundraisers with Hurricane Helene. This might be a little different.

You see, I’m writing this on behalf of my landlords and friends, Nate and Amanda. The home we share with an additional disabled man in Lithonia, Georgia had some repairs that they couldn't afford, made much worse by the hurricane. They'd been limping along like everyone dealing with inflation and underemployment, but the situation has become urgent, and they need and deserve help.

Nate and Amanda have been my friends for over a decade, and when they heard I was no longer able to work and in a bad situation, they offered me a place in their first home. I told them I wasn’t sure what or when I would be able to pay. They told me that if I ever won my disability case I could start paying rent then.

You see, I'm trying so hard to save this home because they’ve tried so hard to save me.

I was so grateful to move in, and they treated me like family. When I lost the ability to drive, they made sure I got to my doctor’s appointments, and still do. When I can’t afford food, they take me to food banks, and what I can’t find there they’ll help me get at the store. They meet all the needs they could reasonably meet, and then a couple more.

I’ve lived here for three years now, and they’ve never stopped assuring me that I am wanted, even if I can’t contribute to the household on a daily basis. They have never let me go without if there was any other way. They have helped friends and strangers every time they have seen a need. They are unfailingly honest, incredibly trustworthy, and extremely hardworking people.

They've never had much, but they've shared everything they have.

Now, though, the hurricane turned a seem in our roof into a gushing waterfall, and finally into a large hole in Nate and Amanda's bedroom ceiling.

We tarped the leaking roof from the inside to channel out as much water as we could, but with a literal hurricane outside, there’s only so much that you can do.

The three of us who couldn’t get into the attic pushed our chronically ill bodies past their limits, dragging furniture away from walls, hauling totes as fast as we could with our canes, shoving empty containers into the corner as we kicked the debris out, and researching strategies for how to deal with the nightmare. Later we would wade through flooding water to dump out rain and tie down loose trash cans, shine lights and relay directions from the attic to outside, as we all attempted to get the water venting outside the house.

To make matters worse, the HVAC needs to be replaced. It’s a seventeen year old system, with a huge crack in the (inaccessible) drain pan and a bad motherboard. Some friends pooled money with Nate and Amanda to get a couple of window air conditioners for the summer. With medications that make three of us sensitive to heat, it’s been a rough summer, but we got through.

Unfortunately, winter is a few weeks away, and it’s going to be a little less than seventeen thousand for a new system to be installed.

What makes it an emergency however, is that without the drying and air movement of the AC, trying to dehumidify everything is going to be even harder, giving us a greater chance of mold. If mold takes hold, I'm not sure if we can save the house.

This fundraiser is for the $2,500 hurricane deductible that we're almost certainly going to be charged by the homeowner's policy and the $17,000 for the HVAC, plus estimated fees for the platform.

Not included in the total are any cleaning supplies, or a tiny storage unit and rental truck if we need one to store all of their bedroom furniture while the roof is redone. (We won't know about any of that until we get the estimate from insurance/roofing.) The claim has already been filed.

The air conditioning is a pre-existing problem, and I've found no way for it to be covered by any charity, government program, or private programs in the state. The ones that my social worker knew about didn't apply (I applied anyway) and I let her know about two more that I found. The religious groups I've reached out to in my area don't work in anything but clothing, children's furniture, and durable medical goods.

If additional costs emerge, or anything ends up being less expensive, I will update and adjust the goal accordingly as soon as I find out.

Please help these genuinely good people. The smallest donation helps. So does sharing.

People in Florida are evacuating before Hurricane Milton is expected to hit the state’s Gulf Coast on Wednesday evening, bringing tornadoes, high winds, a dramatic storm surge, and upwards of 15 inches of rain. Milton grew from a tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane in a little over a day, fed by water in the Gulf of Mexico that climate change has pushed in some places to 4 degrees Fahrenheit (2.2 degrees Celsius) higher than normal. Veteran Florida meteorologist and hurricane specialist John Morales choked up as he called it “horrific.”

President Joe Biden has approved an emergency declaration for Florida, enabling the federal government to move supplies in ahead of the storm’s arrival, but the state’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, has refused to take a call from Vice President Kamala Harris about planning for the storm. When asked about DeSantis’s refusal at today’s White House press briefing, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre noted that the president and vice president have reached out to give support to the people of Florida.

As for DeSantis, “It’s up to him if he wants to respond to us or not. But what we're doing is we’re working with state and local officials to make sure that we are pre-positioned to make sure that we are ready to be there for the communities that are going to be impacted. We are doing the job… to protect the communities and to make sure that they have everything that is needed." When asked about DeSantis’s snub, Harris answered: “It’s just utterly irresponsible, and it is selfish, and it is about political gamesmanship instead of doing the job that you took an oath to do, which is to put the people first.”

Before this year, Florida had goals of moving toward clean energy, but in May 2024, DeSantis signed a law to restructure the state’s energy policy so that addressing climate change would no longer be a priority. The law deleted any mention of climate change in state laws. Saying that “Florida rejects the designs of the left to weaken our energy grid, pursue a radical climate agenda, and promote foreign adversaries,” the governor posted a graphic on X that said the law would “INSULATE FLORIDA FROM GREEN ZEALOTS….”

Like DeSantis, Trump and Project 2025, a playbook for the next Republican administration, authored by allies of the right-wing Heritage Foundation and closely associated with Trump and Republican vice presidential candidate Ohio senator J.D. Vance, take the position that concerns about climate change are overblown. Project 2025 says the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, whose duties include issuing hurricane warnings, is “one of the main drivers of the climate change alarm industry and, as such, is harmful to future U.S. prosperity.” It calls for either eliminating its functions, sending them to other agencies, privatizing them, or putting them under the control of states and territories.

The U.S. Supreme Court came back in session today in Washington, D.C. It has decided not to hear arguments about whether the federal Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTLA) overrules Texas’s state abortion ban. EMTLA requires that hospitals provide emergency abortion care to save a woman’s life or stop organ failure or loss of fertility. Texas’s ban remains in place.

As legal analyst Joyce White Vance commented: “At least no one can pretend we don’t understand the consequences for women, & others, of putting appointments to the Court back in [Republican] control.”

The Georgia Supreme Court today reinstated the state’s six-week abortion ban after Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney, appointed in 2012 by Republican governor Nathan Deal, decided last week that the law violates Georgia’s Constitution. In his decision, McBurney wrote that “liberty in Georgia includes in its meaning, in its protections, and in its bundle of rights the power of a woman to control her own body, to decide what happens to it and in it, and to reject state interference with her healthcare choices.”

McBurney’s decision came shortly after a state investigation revealed that at least two women in Georgia died after the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision struck down the abortion protections the court put in place in 1973 with Roe v. Wade. In anticipation of an end to Roe, Georgia governor Brian Kemp in 2019 signed a six-week abortion ban prohibiting the procedure before most women know they’re pregnant. The Dobbs decision allowed that law to go into effect.

The Georgia Supreme Court stayed McBurney’s decision during the state’s appeal of it. Chris Geidner of Law Dork noted that the court did leave in place McBurney’s block on the law’s provision that district attorneys can have access to “health records” where an abortion is performed or where someone who received an abortion lives.

In her attempt to reach new audiences, Vice President Harris sat down for an interview with Alex Cooper of the Call Her Daddy podcast to talk about women’s issues. Call Her Daddy is the second most popular podcast in the country, reaching as many as 2 million downloads per episode. According to NPR’s Elena Moore, Call Her Daddy’s audience is 70% women, 93% under 45.

Cooper began the interview by acknowledging that she does not usually talk about politics, but “at the end of the day, I couldn’t see a world in which one of the main conversations in this election is women and I’m not a part of it…. I am so aware I have a very mixed audience when it comes to politics, so please hear me when I say [that] my goal today is not to change your political affiliation. What I’m hoping is that you’re able to listen to a conversation that isn’t too different from the ones that we’re having here every week.” Cooper said she had also reached out to Trump, adding: “If he also wants to have a meaningful, in-depth conversation about women’s rights in this country, then he is welcome on Call Her Daddy any time.”

On the podcast, Cooper and Harris talked about the prevalence of sexual assault before addressing abortion. When Cooper quoted Trump’s promise to protect women, Harris noted that he was the one who appointed the three extremists to the Supreme Court that overturned Roe v. Wade and that 20 states now have abortion bans, some with no exceptions for rape or incest. Harris pointed out that the majority of women who receive abortion care are mothers and that every state in the South except for Virginia has an abortion ban. For a woman in those states—and one out of every three American women lives in one—the journey is expensive, hard, and traumatic.

“You don’t have to abandon your faith or deeply held beliefs to agree the government shouldn’t be telling her what to do,” Harris said. “And that’s what’s so outrageous about it, is a bunch of these guys up in these state capitals are writing these decisions because they somehow have decided that they’re in a better position to tell you what’s in your best interest than you are to know what’s in your own best interest. It’s outrageous.” Harris pointed out that she is the first vice president or president to go to a reproductive health care clinic, and she noted that those clinics perform Pap smears, breast cancer screening, and HIV testing and that they are having to close because of the abortion bans. She noted, though, that since Dobbs, people across the country have chosen to protect abortion rights.

The article in the right-wing National Review about the interview was titled: “Kamala Goes on Sex Podcast to Lie about Georgia Abortion Law.”

On Call Her Daddy, Harris also brought her economic plans for an “opportunity economy” to a younger audience. When Cooper asked her how she was going to help young people “not feel left behind,” Harris agreed it is “a very real issue and we need to take it seriously.” She promised to address housing costs by increasing the housing supply, working with home builders in the private sector to build three million new housing units by the end of her first term; help with $25,000 downpayment assistance for first-time homebuyers; and enact tax cuts for 100 million middle-class working people, including a $6,000 tax credit for new parents to help them afford the costs of a child’s first year.

The Committee for a Responsible Budget noted today that a moderate reading of Harris’s economic plans suggest they would increase the U.S. debt by about $3.5 trillion through 2035. A similar examination of Trump’s plans says they would increase the debt by $7.5 trillion.

Meanwhile, today, Trump openly embraced the race science favored by Nazis. In a scattered call to right-wing host Hugh Hewitt’s show, Trump called Harris a communist and lied—again—that she has let 13,000 murderers into the country. And then he claimed that murder is in a person’s genes, and “we got a lot of bad genes in our country right now.” He has also noted that “it would be very dangerous” for anyone to admit they were voting for Kamala Harris at one of his rallies because they would “get hurt.”

Hurricane Milton spurred meteorologist John Morales to step forward to take a stand, sharing his thoughts after Hurricane Helene hit. “Something’s shifted,” he wrote. “And it’s not just the climate.” He noted that with Helene on the way, “I did what I’ve done during my entire 40 year career—I tried to warn people. Except that the warning was not well received by everyone. A person accused me of being a ‘climate militant,’ a suggestion that I’m embellishing extreme weather threats to drive an agenda. Another simply said that my predictions were ‘an exaggeration.’

“But it wasn’t an exaggeration,” he wrote.

“For decades I had felt in control. Not in control of the weather, of course. But in control of the message that, if my audience was prepared and well informed, I could confidently guide them through any weather threat, and we’d all make it through safely…. But no one can hide from the truth. Extreme weather events, including hurricanes, are becoming more extreme. I must communicate the growing threats from the climate crisis come hell or high water—pun intended.”

Tingles and Giggles - Chapter Five - Tyler Owens x Reader

Chapter Five - Maybe Givin' Us A Shot

Tyler’s touch instantly calmed your whole body, even if it made you jump at first. Something about the rough yet soft hands made you melt. You couldn’t quite explain it, but it was something you definitely were not used to.

“We should be at our destination in about 15 minutes, better get your boots back on,” he laughed, giving your hand a light squeeze.

While on the drive you decided to get extra comfortable by taking your boots off and putting your feet on the dash. You slowly pulled your hand away from his, feeling the warmth instantly leave your fingers. Sliding your boots back on, the radio playing ‘Chattahoochee’ by Alan Jackson. You smirk, turning the radio up to the volume it was that morning.

“Well, way down yonder on the Chattahoochee, it gets hotter than a hoochie coochie,” Tyler sang with his whole heart, stealing his hat back from you, “We laid rubber on the Georgia asphalt, we got a little crazy but we never got caught.”

“Down by the river on a Friday night, a pyramid of cans in the pale moonlight,” you sang, pulling on your other boot, “Talking ‘bout cars and dreaming ‘bout women, never had a plan just livin’ for the minute.”

“Yeah, way down yonder on the Chattahoochee, never knew how much that muddy water meant to me,” you both sang loudly, “But I learned how to swim and I learned who I was, a lot about livin' and a little ‘bout love!”

“Y’know, princess,” he said while turning the radio down so you could hear him.

You hummed in response, looking over at him as he took a right-hand turn into the parking lot of the Black Mesa State Park visitor center.

“I could get used to this,” he said, getting a sheepish grin on his face.

You smiled and chuckled, “I hate that I could say the same, just don’t let my team know.”

“Why do you say it like that?” He asked, pulling into a parking spot.

“Because I love my team and what we do more than you know, but sometimes it would be nice to be able to jam out to the music I enjoy while in a chase. No one wants to listen to Alan Jackson or Alabama,” you said, pulling your purse strap over your shoulder, “They always want to listen to Metallica or Guns N’ Roses. They aren’t bad musicians by any means, I just grew up on country music.”

“I give the wranglers no choice,” he laughed, “My truck, my music.”

“I wish it worked like that for us,” she said in almost a scoff, shaking her head slightly.

“You’re welcome to ride passenger princess whenever you would like in Ol Red,” he said, getting out of the truck and doing a slight jog to your side.

“I appreciate it, Ty,” you said, stepping out of the truck as he opened the door for you, “But I think Boone would be heartbroken.”

“He’ll live,” he said, shutting the door and locking the truck.

You laughed and Tyler put his hand on your lower back as you both walked to the entrance of the park; for it being a beautiful day there weren’t many people there. While walking down a small trail you couldn’t help but enjoy the sounds of nature and the presence of Tyler. One of your lifelong loves and soon-to-be the love of your life, but you didn’t know it yet.

“I know it may not seem like much, but this is a special place to me,” he said, walking up to a fallen tree that was turned into a bench overlooking the plains, “Before I was old enough to chase storms, I’m talking high school age Tyler, I’d come here and watch them from afar while keeping an eye on their direction.”

“I used to do something like that when I was young, I would always watch them out the big picture window. Otherwise, I’d go on a hill nearby if the next town over was going to be hit,” you said, “Being 10 or 11, I felt useless when it came to warning people about tornados.”

“I understand, I felt the same way when I was younger. I was actually terrified of them until I learned the beauty of them,” he said, watching some of the smaller clouds cross the vast blue sky, “Whenever I feel lost or if I start feelin’ like the wranglers have done all they can do, I come out here and remember why we’re here and what all we can do to help others before, during, and after the disaster.”

As Tyler talked, you couldn’t feel anything but a strong surge of what you could only explain as love rushing through you. He was so much like you, but also so unlike each other at the same time.

“I don’t know what it is about you, (Y/n),” he said, “But I feel drawn to you like I am to twisters.”

“And to think I thought the YouTube star persona was who Tyler Owens was,” you chuckled to yourself, “Turns out he’s just a big ol teddy bear.”

“Just don’t tell anyone, k?” He said, leaning back and looking at you, “I’d never hear the end of it.”

“I suppose I can keep that secret, just tell me one thing tho, honey,” you said, “Why’d you never ask me out before last night?”

You calling him honey and having it sound genuine threw him off, were you actually falling for Mister Tornado Wrangler himself, Tyler Owens? He took a second to comprehend what you asked.

“I don’t really know, the only person who knows I like you is my aunt back in Texas,” he said, picking at the bark on the bench, “I’ve kept it hidden in fear of it being rushed into or… I don’t know, having others pressure me about it.”

“Are you saying that you were scared?” You asked, leaning back and looking out at the never-ending small hills.

“I guess in a way you could say I was,” he said, chuckling to himself, “I can chase an EF5 tornado with no fear yet I don’t have the guts to even ask you out.”

You sat there in silence for a few minutes, taking your hand and putting it on top of his that was rested on his thigh.

“It’s better late than never, Ty,” you said, giving his hand a slight squeeze, “I can’t say I was that brave myself.”

He looked over at you and asked, “What do you mean?”

“I didn’t even know if I liked you as a person, or if I was secretly jealous of all the success you have with the Tornado Wranglers team,” you said sheepishly, “There were so many close calls over the last few years where the Storm Riders wanted to call it quits and go their different ways and quit chasing. So I had to give a pep talk to all of them and remind them of the good we do in researching the deadly beasts and getting warnings out sooner for others.”

“If it happens again, let them go. If it’s meant to be, they’ll come back,” he said, “But until they did…you could ride in Ol Red…”

“I think this year being such a success with storms and calling the right cells has helped a bunch, but I know Jade and Tristan want to start a family and as much as Willow loves me, she wants to go pursue modeling,” you sighed, “So deep down I feel like it was the last year for most the team. Asher and Finn would never leave unless I disbanded the team, neither of them have a life outside of chasing.”

“They’re more than welcome to join us if that does happen,” he said, “Two drones would be kind of cool in videos.”

“Oh shut up,” you said while playfully smacking his chest.

“Just imagine the views, Princess!” He said getting excited.

“I mean, yeah, it’d be sick,” you said, “But it’s also about learning more about how twisters work.”

“Yeah, but picture this. Two drones in the air getting a 360 view of us in Ol Red shooting fireworks off!” He said, getting up and motioning with his hands pointing finger guns into the sky.

“Never did I think we’d go from a deep conversation to giggling like little kids,” you laughed.

“We gotta do it!” He said, turning around and having a huge smile plastered on his face.

You laughed while shaking your head, “I’ll talk to the team, but for now, sit your ass down.”

“Sorry, darlin’,” he said, giving you a sheepish smile and sitting back down next to you, “So what do you think?”

“About?” You asked, propping your boots up on his lap.

“What else would I be asking you about?” He chuckled and looked over at you with one of his eyebrows raised.

“I mean, we were just talking about drones and a firework show in a tornado,” you said with your words trailing off and rubbing the back of your neck.

“True,” he said, “But I’m asking ‘bout maybe givin’ us a shot…”
