was reading Sherlock holmes and this popped into my head
#I’m fine with writers doing something different with a character but they keep making them weirdly mean for no reason#please stop mischaracterizing the blorbos#Sherlock is not a heartless machine of a man. he has allot of compassion he just has trouble properly expressing it.#Why do they keep making him emotionless and broody#well the broody is accurate#stop making him mean to Watson that’s his hypeman bestie soulmate he would kill and die for#And he has a sense of humor. he’s described laughing giggling or chuckling in the books allot. Especially at his own jokes#Batman is a genuinely good person who cares about the people around him and also the entirety of Gotham#He cares about his mentally unwell villains and wants them to get the help they need#And he also doesn’t kill. Under any circumstance. That’s a big part of his character idk how anyone could miss that#the mischaracterization of Batman is so bad it’s effecting the comics#It’s spreading like a infection#Superman is sweet and kind and full of love for humanity#he’s ridiculously powerful and uses that power to selflessly help others#most importantly he’s just a farmboy from Kansas#Not that deep into Superman lore sorry#There’s hope for the future of Superman and Batman movies#which is nice#Sherlock holmes#acd sherlock#Superman#batman#Dc

I've been thinking about Mollymauk, as I'm periodically wont to do, and the fandom discussion about him as a moral compass. Because the interesting thing here is, Molly wasn’t a very moral character. He was an unrepentant scammer. He had no respect for interpersonal boundaries and would deliberately push and break them. Generally, he was an asshole. As far as actually having a strong moral stance I would say Fjord was the standout of early m9, and to some extent Beau.
But here’s the thing: almost all of early m9 thought of themselves as horrible people. Fjord had been bullied so bad growing up that he still dealt with self-hate from it, and now suffered from survivor's guilt to boot. Caleb had killed his own parents. Beau, while she hated her dad, also had internalized self-hate and on some level thought she’d been such a shitty daughter she deserved his treatment. Nott was stuck in a body she considered monstrous. Yasha had survivor's guilt and knew she’d done bad things in her blank spots. Even when they did good, they didn’t think of themselves as good. Most of them were suspicious and asocial and faced the world with the same kind of distrust they expected to be (and were experienced in being) met with. (Jester was an exception, an agent of neither good nor bad but of amoral chaos)
But Molly was different. He was outspoken about loving life and people. He wanted to spread joy, even to people he didnt know or had even met: he slipped coin into people's pockets, hid a silver in a tree just so some stranger would one day be happy to find it. He openly cared for the party early on; was one of the first to step in and help Caleb when he went catatonic in battle. Above all, Molly had rules: where everyone else would agonize over what was the right or wrong or smart thing to do, Molly loudly proclaimed we don't leave people behind, and we leave every place better than we found it.
But the thing about Molly’s rules was, they were largely a cover. While the rest of the m9 thought they were bad even as they did good, Molly thought of himself as good even as he did bad. He scammed people, but made it a good and memorable experience, therefore thinking he gave more than he took. He charmed Nott and Fjord without consent, and when confronted would claim it was to help them. Out of the group, Beau saw through this, not because she was a better person but because she was a cynic. She saw that he caused harm, just as she did, and was personally affronted that he still thought of himself as good and tried to leave people happy, whereas she deliberately left every place worse than she found it.
I see Molly as a moral compass of the group not because he was actually any more moral than them, but because they made him their template. He was joy and brightness and he died trying to save them because it was the right thing to do, and they all chose to honor him by emulating his rules more than Molly himself ever did, because to them it was more than just a cover, backed up by genuine moral thought and discussion rather than small gestures. He taught them that it was possible to be kind of a shit person and still be good, to still love yourself and others. The idealized Molly they created never existed, and finally died for good when they resurrected him in the end and were met with a stranger, who they welcomed with the same love and care they would've expected Molly to show them.
#critical role#cr2#mollymauk tealeaf#long post#i know we're all thinking about a different dead pc today but this has been on my mind for a while and i wanted to write it out#i feel like discussions of molly tend to get stuck in two camps:#either 'he was a good kind and perfect moral compass' (lol no)#or: 'he was an asshole and you're all delusional' (also no)#molly was as much of an asshole as the rest of the m9#but he thought of himself as capable of being a good person and doing good things#and that counted for something even if he backed it up with empty gestures and platitudes bc there WAS genuine care in it#and when the m9 chose to emulate it it was no longer empty#nella talks cr

Deviant Connor and guilt go hand in hand but I usually see it focused on his past actions. The ones where he genuinely didn't have control over what he did. While maybe he personally might have trouble forgiving himself, in the end, he was just as tied down by programming as any other android, and it simply isn't fair for others to judge him harshly for that.
But what about a Connor that struggles to not act like a manipulative cunt even in deviancy? Where he can't help but analyze every microexpression, the details hidden in someone's appearance, the weaknesses in their character, and use it all to his advantage. Who will switch from considerate and friendly to intimidating and terrifying on the drop of a dime, scaring those close to him, because if he can do a full 180 effortlessly, what's to say the way he behaves towards them isn't an act too?
A Connor who, while governed by compassion and goodwill for his people, still struggles on a personal level because he can't help but read and play on the emotions of those around him to a frightening degree. Who constantly sees the clear ruthless line from point A to B and has to reign in the impulse to act on it. Who has to deal with this compounding guilt, because even if he has good intentions, why do all his actions feel so calculated and exploitative?
What kind of guilt comes from being able to look into someone's soul, know exactly how to break them, and have to consciously choose not to?
#detroit become human#dbh#dbh connor#just. even in a connor that is characterized by his kindness.... that isnt who he was MEANT to be#his kindness shouldnt be innate it should be something he has to claw at and work towards#maybe the compassion was always there and just needed a little (a lot) of prodding to get at#but at his core he's literally designed to be ruthlessly manipulative#he would have to work to be genuine#lineko.txt#just think#having desires for the first time#knowing exactly how to play those around you to get what you want#and having to choose not to act selfishly again and again

I love how Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse said “Anyone can be Spider-Man”. I love how it inspired everyone to imagine their own Spider-People, saving the day in their own universes, with all kinds of cool, interesting personalities and aesthetics and mutations and life stories and relationships. We all put pieces of our soul into these homemade heroes. We had fun. We found community. And then Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse said, “Wow, great job! You’ve really taken our message to heart. Well, get ready for even more of everything you liked from the first movie and a new message to complement the first. Anyone can be Spider-Man… and anyone can be pulled into a cult.”
So now we all have to contemplate whether our lovingly crafted heroes would ever be on Team Mandatory Trauma Because Martyr Complex or not and why.
#i for one made a second spider-person (diving belle) right after watching atsv#who IS on team mandatory trauma for reasons that make sense given her moral code and its context#her world has eldritch horror elements that give some of her enemies a sharper edge#and she has had to use lethal force#in a ‘stays true to her strict morality based around compassion nonetheless’ way like wonder woman#she’s used to tough utilitarian decisions#she’s learned that no hero can save everyone from intensely traumatic brushes with mind-breaking corruptive power#so when miguel gave his big speech she was ‘yeah okay. i get it. sometimes shit just happens’#it was actually very enjoyable going through the character creation process#from the starting point of ‘WOULD chase miles and restrain him by force’#and then working toward ‘otherwise a genuinely good person and superhero who could be the star of her own series’#atsv#spider man across the spider verse#across the spiderverse#spider-verse#smatsv#sm: atsv#spiderverse#spidersona

If I remember correctly you created Machete around 2007-2008. But when did you create Vasco? (I'm sorry of this has been asked before, I couldn't find anything)
First finished pictures of Vasco are from 2018, but even before that I had been thinking it would be interesting if Machete had had one (1) romantic relationship in his youth before he was ordained. I just didn't have a name and design for him yet.
In the earliest sketches of Vasco, he first looked a little bit like a bordercollie, then like a spaniel or a setter. He had a darker color palette as well, sort of chestnut brown with white markings, but combined with the overpowering whiteness of Machete he looked kind of impassionate and drab, so I kept making him warmer and lighter until he became the golden boy he is today. The name came later, I just thought Vasco sounded friendly and charismatic. (Also the old finnish word 'vaski' means brass and bronze, and even if it's a tedious connection and doesn't factor into their canon at all, it felt too fitting to me personally and I had to go with it).
#answered#anonymous#he was meant to be an absent character#one who appeared only in a couple of flashbacks or dreams#but the fact he used to be there and then wasn't was something that still influenced Machete#how he viewed love and other people and himself#Vasco wasn't supposed to show up again but he sort of elbowed himself back into the story and into a central position just last summer#really switched up things you could say#I originally imagined him to be more cocky and entitled and thrill seeking#but he mellowed out pretty instantly#I like him a lot better as a genuinely good and sincere person#maybe partially because you wouldn't expect someone that coddled and spoiled to have a sense of empathy and a working moral compass?

the only thing i can say is to just be fucking kind and patient with others during all of this. it’s an intense subject that makes people heated for good reason but can we just not completely mercilessly rip into each other while we’re all just trying to process the same information
#this is really all i can say on the subject#have a little compassion#if you feel the urge to send an aggressive message to somebody maybe. don’t. nobody is happy about what’s going on#lashing out at anyone you think is processing this information in the Wrong Way is not constructive#if somebody genuinely has a shitty opinion please just block them#cw discourse

I'm sure you get these kinda asks alot but. God I can't imagine the heart you have to do this kinda work. Scientists should study you in a lab for that level of compassion and fortitude against loss. Gives me hope I might feel normal about living with animals again someday after losing so many. I hope Bianca lives a million healthy happy years and godspeed.
After I die they will be studying my brain for many reasons. Not just for my immunity to compassion fatigue. They will be adding my pet care instructions for when I’m out of town to my permanent file.
But thank you!!! You are so lovely. I love what I do and I appreciate the help and love I’ve received from people on here!!!
#btw I know I am not genuinely immune to compassion fatigue. I hear#I jest*#I take care of myself#self care and all that#ask

Joel “you’re cargo” Miller will stay up all night sacrificing hours of sleep just to ensure Ellie’s protection. Joel “it’s best we keep our histories to ourselves” Miller will indulge to Ellie’s curiosity surrounding his brother and answer her questions. Joel “stop acting like this kid has a future in front of her” Miller will try to pour oil on troubled waters and tell Ellie she won’t get shot because he won’t let her. Joel “nothing bad in there except you” Miller will fight a mental hurricane to offer some form of solace and verbally empathize with the the fact that Ellie’s innocence and childhood is jeopardized by a cruel and unforgiving world she doesn’t deserve to suffer from. Joel “that’s not funny” Miller will giggle like a school child as he basks in the absurd humor and joy and safety and solidarity of the one silver lining left in his life. Joel Miller-

This is the only thing I'm going to say about the election until it's over:
Anyone who did not vote for Harris or who attempted to dissuade people from voting for Harris, you are indirectly responsible for whatever shit Donald Trump does if he gets elected. That blood is primarily on his hands, yes. But it is also on yours. I hope you can live with that because I sure as hell wouldn't be able to.
#'but gaza' trump wants TO OBLITERATE THEM. HE LITERALLY WANTS THERE TO BE NOTHING LEFT OF GAZA AT ALL. WHY DO YOU THINK#I DON'T WANT HIM IN POWER?????#yeah I said I wouldn't election post I lied sorry.#I know most of you don't actually care what happens to american citizens because we're all Violent Hypocrites who should kill ourselves#and somehow every single civilian is responsible for the actions of a military and government that comparatively few of us are actually par#of but FUCKING HELL. You don't care about THE PEOPLE OF GAZA??? Because that's what you're telling me if you're in favor of#doing anything OTHER than the most likely path to get trump out of politics. which is voting for the candidate DIRECTLY OPPOSING HIM.#the thing about america being an empire that needs to die. is that before it dies. it is still affecting the rest of the world.#I can't make you care about me and my loved ones. but I am IMPLORING you to have some fucking compassion for all the people#who are going to be DEEPLY negatively affected elsewhere if trump gets into power.#THEIR HARM. THEIR DEATHS. ARE ON /YOU/ IF YOU DID ANYTHING TO FACILITATE TRUMP'S VICTORY IF THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS.#I don't believe most of you actually have any amount of the sympathy and compassion for others you claim to have.#I don't think any of the causes you throw yourself behind are actually meaningful to you. I don't think any of this is based on a#genuine desire to build a better world. I think you just want your Internet friends to think you are a Good Person.#if I see anyone. ANYONE. acting like a trump presidency is what we 'deserve'. or that it's necessary to 'teach [xyz] a lesson'#I am NEVER speaking to you again I don't care how long I've known you.#us politics#I am a disabled queer woman. almost everybody I love is also disabled and queer. you think we're acceptable collateral damage fine.#but don't cry that I'm being a bitch if I say that that makes me not trust you and not want to have anything to do with you.

I love the dichotomy we get between jinshi and the emperor that shows off how the traits that make jinshi a great prince, boss, friend (husband 👀👀👀👀) are the very same traits that will make him a terrible emperor.
His hard working streak that lets him handle his weird assignments with grace and manage the clashing egos of the inner palace is what will get him killed by overwork as emperor since he has no real head for delegation. It took 11 volumes and the intervention of most of his immediate family just to get jinshi to hire a secretary. The emperor always being free to host parties, sleep with the consorts, and bust jinshis balls in-between it all is, much like lakan always being free to annoy maomao, actually a sign of him being god-like at delegation and organizational management.
His lack of ego and willingness to look the fool if it gets the job done is great for avoiding political snafus and getting to the truth of things. It's genuinely the thing that makes all his expeditions to the western capital so wildly successful: he really doesn't gaf about how he's seen by the public, so long as the job gets done and his friends aren't in immediate danger. It's also the exact opposite of what you need from a head of state who's legitimacy is not-insignificantly based on the public perceiving you as an instrument of the will of heaven. The emperor being willing to kill people and their families over slights jinshi (and most sane human beings) would be willing to let slide is cruel and inhuman, but it's also what keeps the populace at large from being able to organize against him and challenge the imperial power.
Jinshis compassionate streak, his urge to save as many people he can and find the best solution for everyone possible, makes him great to work for. He'll give you assignments that match your hyper fixation, work around your crippling social anxiety, give you a post that just-so-happens to involve you staying with the love of your life for a few months. More over, he isn't gonna risk his life and your position over petty ego or greed when he can find a peaceful solution instead. But the hesitation he feels at using people like tools, and his unwillingness to act if it means throwing people under the bus, is what will lead to death and destruction if he's the emperor. Especially in a time of war. The current emperor is willing to ruin lives and crush nations if it reaches a goal, advances an agenda.
Finally, jinshis loyalty, I'd say even more than his looks, is what draws people to him. He loves his toys, can't stand to give them up. It makes him a great romantic figure. But when you're the emperor, and you need to be willing and able to marry someone for political ends, produce as many heirs as possible regardless of who with, and set aside the feelings of those women for your own sake, that loyalty is poison.
Idk, so often in stories with these systems they sorta follow the logic of "if he's a good person he'll be a good leader." I think it's cool to have a series talk about how being a leader involves being EXTREMELY comfortable with being an asshole, for a myriad of reasons, and how someone being pleasant to work for wouldn't make them an effect monarch.
#its also important to note that despite all the shitty things the emperor is shown being/doing#he genuinely is portrayed as a well loved and effective leader#who does his best to reach his version of compassion#john mulaney has a good bit about working with celebrities for snl#and how in their world their version of polite/acceptable is very different and it can lead to tense situations#i think a lot of the emperor's actions are like that#like in a vacuum they're dick moves#but in the context of who he is and what his duties are you see why he does them#the apothecary diaries#jinshi#ka zuigetsu#spoilers

just saw people on twt getting mad that gale said a literal god wasn't good enough for him . i need people to understand that he didn't mean it like "I deserved more than a literal goddess" he meant that his actions were foolish and made it LOOK like he thought himself above one. that he should've been content with what he had, but felt he had to prove himself to her.
if you romance him he literally realizes that he didn't need to find validation in a god but within someone who understands humanity more than a god ever could.
please learn reading comprehension before making yourselves look stupid I'm so tired of this
#ALSO people saying that 'oh he had a literal god and wasn't satisfied' yeah lmao because she is incapable of compassion and genuine love#he literally admits that in act three. his own words#the gale slander is founded on stupid people not being able to understand how complicated this is#also yes gale DOES fall back into his power thirst in act three. because healing is not linear.#talking him down from killing himself doesn't mean he's suddenly better and over what mystra did#abuse survivors will often seek a way to gain power back. gale literally begins to resent the concept of gods and wants to destroy it#and honestly he's right. but dont tell him that#anyway gale deserves redemption#bg3 spoilers#baldur's gate 3 spoilers#bg3#baldur's gate 3#gale dekarios#six speaks

No but Astarion wanting to be valued for more than sex and seen for something that's not just sex regardless of who romances him and Wyll wanting a chaste and genuine romance with sincere and committed courtship with no sex regardless of who romances him is insaneeeeee. I know everyone's talked about this before but everytime I stop to think about it I lose my mind. They couldn't be more narratively bound I'm clawing at the bars of my cage
#I put my lengthy tags in a reblog if you want.#And yes ofc Wyll teaching Astarion compassion and Astarion teaching Wyll to value himself and advocate for himself#Make them perfect for each other#But THIS to me is the nail in the coffin (pun intended) of why they are meant for each other#Wyll would not fall for Astarion's seduction attempts he is the only companion who would not give in to having meaningless sex w him#Or if not meaningless sex then immediate sex ykwim#Likewise Wyll's identity as a monster hunter and a chivalrous champion of the people would make him the prime target of Astarion's whims#Because who better to protect a monster but the monster hunter TURNED INTO A MONSTER himself.#Astarion would jump on the chance to use Wyll's devil transformation to his advantage and Wyll is THE ONLY ONE it wouldn't work on.#Wyll may have fallen first but Astarion fell harder than Elturel when he finally realised Wyll is GENUINELY good#And that he GENUINELY does not want sex and does not love Astarion for the possibility of sex#He asks for a fucking dance. He asks for a fucking dance before he ever even entertains the idea of sex. And he is steadfast about it#And astarion would play along with the romance just until he can get Wyll to help him kill Cazador#But would inevitably fall in love with Wyll along the way no matter what because Wyll is just genuine and chaste no matter what#“Wyll is the type of man I used to dream of marrying. When I was 13” he is doomed to fall for Wyll no matter what and he hates it#wyllstarion#Wyll Ravengard#astarion ancunin#bg3 astarion#bg3 wyll#Bloodpact#Coolest fucking ship name ever also. No one does it like them
