Is the video game really subverting its genre? Are you sure it's not just doing clever things within its genre, because otherwise the game would be boring and unchallenging and say nothing interesting? I'm just saying, it's cool and all that the internet allows horror game fandoms to overflow into eachother, but not EVERY 2 hour video essay needs to be spent breathlessly sucking off the devs. Sometimes a game is just REGULAR difficult and REGULAR high-quality.
Besides RPGs made over a decade ago, what is the thing supposedly subverting? Clearly not other contemporary indie horror games, because there is clearly a convergent ethos forming of cosmic horror and beginners' traps; that's just what the genre looks like nowadays.
#pathologic#fear and hunger#inscryption#in general I just hate overly reverent video essays; you guys ruined Airbender for me#this is NOT me hating on Pathologic!#Icepick is a good studio; their story is interesting their characters are well written#introducing needs decay mechanics into a first-person adventure game is a good idea; I just wouldn't call it “subversive”#this IS me hating a little bit on Patho fans just because I think hyperbole about the game's difficulty is tedious#and distracts from an equally valid conversation about what you get if you approach the game like a sandbox#I get it the algorithm incentivizes youtubers to talk about every new game like it's a complete departure from what came before#but if everything is special nothing is#and i swear if one more person tries to read me HP Lovecraft's wikipedia page like i was born yesterday im going to scream#Just saying; if fucking with the player's expectations is all it takes to be “subversive” then Stick of Truth is “subverting its genre”#except... no... Stick of Truth is a bog standard RPG just with a quirky tutorial#and creative integration of its off-beat story and mechanics RIGHT??#my point is Patho and F&H aren't actually much different; they still play like RPGs still handle like RPGs#the fact that you die more than you would in COD or Skyrim or whatever doesn't make it the “anti-RPG”#anymore than Seinfeld was the “anti-sitcom”#“subversiveness” is just a basic bitch way to analyze things; and I think “How does the art take ADVANTAGE of its genre?” is better#media criticism

Another day, another drawing fat people tutorial that seems to think the only people who get fat are people with estrogen-based endocrine systems and resultant fat distribution.
#now i've noticed this i can't unnotice it#SO MANY posts in the genre of 'random person decides to share their process' do this#and like they're rando artists they're not obligated to do shit but it does rankle#when they're like 'DON'T do this' (points at picture that looks very like an artist-stylised version of me)#or it says 'here's how to draw fat/chubby/heavier/etc bodies!'#and all the images are of people with tiddies and soft fat#WHO TO BE CLEAR DEFINITELY NEED REPRESENTATION AND OFTEN GET DRAWN WRONG#but please add like#a 'some' somewhere in there#and i honestly don't remember seeing a tutorial that was like 'here's how to draw fat people'#and it was ONLY or even half people with a more testosterone-influenced setup

Your swsh art always makes me want to replay the game because i love it and its my favorite pokemon game and every time i play another pokemon game i think of it how i miss certain elements from swsh. Then i boot up the game and im once again caught in the 1 hour 40 minutes hand held intro and im like ah- now i remember why i have been playing other pokemon games instead of this one. Happy (late?) birthday!
you don't want to listen to hop? you don't want to hear him teach you about type matchups? you don't wanna let him cheer u on...? 🥺 waa....?
#ask#bakuspeech#I am joking to be clear lmao#thank u happy bday to me !!#tbh I got real used to pokemon overexpositioning since sumo lol. it's kind of a boon for me#cause I'm not a Gamer™ and my brain takes stuff on Very slowly#so the tutorial stuff and the cutscenes give me time to catch up. also it's still fun to see these guys run around#I am in fact here for these guys lol. weird thing to say about the game built on and with an essential focus on the pokemon I know#I just like humans! I just like watching hop running circles around my player character all excited#and leon being a dick to his hometown people when they're expecting 'leon' back and they get the champion instead#and you get to see sonia used to dealing with it but the frustration never fully fades and how close she is to hop and that picture's bleak#listen this is my bread&butter lol. leon really doesn't show up That much himself around the game he's a shadow casted over the story#it's always interesting to me! does Not mean it's not sluggish to other people who want to play the game lmao#but I like it. also the tutorial at least the first time around was necessary to me bc the difficulty scales way up later on lol#it's a very good first pokemon game I maintain this. sumo never managed to teach me the same way swsh did#I still care drampa tho thank u drampa for being real I love u#lmao it feels like saying I'm not a Gamer™ violates some tenets of having adhd somehow. but its just the case here#the main genres I play are 'itch games tangential to the haunted ps1 people' and 'popcap-style casual games'#my sport's figuring out shapes n movin my stylus sadly. well not sadly why would that be sad

Auto-combat games with 15 different microquests that repeat over and over again for the rest of time making the game a never ending tutorial my beloathed
#I try to play these types of games occasionally#because I’m bored and I’ll download anything from the app store if it catches my attention#but god they are truly the fucking worst#why you would make an entire game out of everyone’s least favorite part of a game — though it is necessary — is beyond me#the only one I’ve ever played that I could stand for more than like 3 days was one about being a little mushroom creature#possibly not the one you’re thinking of. not the one about marrying an entire town (which I don’t think I would qualify in this genre)#like. these games aren’t so bad if the quests are progression based#but the really shit ones will endlessly ask you to do miniscule amounts of boring tasks#like doing a 10 pull on a weapon summons despite you having way more tickets for it than that#and then ask you to come back to claim ur quest reward and hand u the next microquest#and all of these are considered separate tasks so instead of tracking how many summons u’ve done and marking your progress so u can just —#— do as many as ur gonna do and then you can turn in for that number of quest rewards#ur just endlessly going back and forth between menus. bored out of your mind and wondering when the game will stop dragging you along thru—#— this goddamn tutorial#but then eventually you realize the whole fucking game is that way#like I don’t know if they’re trying to actively worsen my attention span#or if they’re trying to set up the world’s laziest dopamine farm#(spoiler alert it’s probably both. cause worse attention span will make u more reliant on dopamine)#anyway I fucking hate these games I really need to stop giving them a chance#like I said the ones that are progression based and will track ur progression regardless of where you are in the quest chain —#— not that bad. can actually be fun#turn-in based ones?? actually the devil’s armpit. stinky. bad#ok I’m done ranting

@reversescale:
In the Human Comedy, yet a new update of the Simulated Universe, it was only a given that they should find some new batch of enemies and instances to face, but this seemed to be one of their odder encounters. In the confines of a classical theater, a single limelight shone upon a towering automaton suspended in a courtly bow, prepared to prance. It appeared stationary, gears and pistons of brass and copper glinting in the illumination. Caelus grinned confidently at him, but given its enormity, he somehow felt it wasn't the vote they needed. "Caelus, we should--" A menacing squeak of hinges interrupted him and the automata's head snapped in their direction, and Dan Heng's gaze flickered warily upwards. If they somehow survived this round, he'd consider it a miracle.
Caelus didn't understand why Dan Heng always had that worried shadow hanging over his face. It's not like the world was at stake this time! Really, he invited him for a round in here to-
"Relaaax," the vessel drawled, holding his hat loosely between two fingers, his other hand propped on his hip without a care in the world. Why would he, with one of his Astral Express crewmembers by his side? "We got this in the bag!"
And besides, today, this stage belonged to Caelus. With a theatrical twirl, he flung his hat into the air with a flourish, sending a spray of sparkling, dream-like projections crashing down onto the enemy's head.
Let the show begin!
#genre: action#reversescale#actor: caelus#(I am going to be very transparent and admit that I've only played a little bit of the original Simulated Universe#I just haven't really had time with work and school to boot up Divergent Universe unfortunately...)#(But I ran through the tutorial briefly just to see what was different and I think? I understand what the changes are?)#(So if you see any discrepancies that is probably why!)

#If I see ONE MORE PERSON label an animated film as not having a genre I SWEAR TO GOG#I will melt their kneecaps into a fine paste and use it as glue in a tiktok slime video tutorial#WE KNOW IT’S ANIMATED FROM THE COVER JUST TELL US THE ACTUAL GENRE#animation#dreamworks#puss in boots#puss in boots the last wish#puss in boots: the last wish#youtube#movies#idk man I’m just mad#tag tag tag#bleh

way-too-ambigious puzzle/mystery game where the sequence of events is based in unreality
#like a crossover between portal and mystery games like dangan (I say this with acknowledgement that I've barely played any mystery games)#but dang case 5 is still my favourite for the use of luck bc every other case is grounded in reality#they just use some creative thinking of available resources but everyone knows how gravity or whatever works#and yet the luck use makes total sense. it's another resource/a rule that only applies to one specific character#but also doesn't come out of nowhere in that case 1 introduced it too but as a passive effect as opposed to something actively used#(though I'd also argue that contradictory to him playing it off as misunderstanding the rules of the game#the roulette scene was instead an instance of ko.maeda completely understanding how his luck actually works and manipulating that#to ensure he gets the least likely outcome and survives. but that's beside the point here)#actually i'm not even sure if a *whole* game based off stuff like that would be fun skldfhsd but I love portal a ton and it's#kinda the same idea as portal: introduce a new tool to the world#and teach the player how to use it; how to think with it; tutorialize it within the world#could be a true puzzle/mystery mix of having the player solve puzzles with the tool then later kinda do the inverse#of presenting peices of a solved puzzle and having them connect the dots of what happened to solve it#......mystery games being inverse puzzle games. is that anything? I should look into analysis of mystery games as a genre at some point#rip the fact one of the main barriers for me actually making a game is all the art assets needed. also music#but regardless jots this sorta thing down as an idea; unrealistic tools and the overlap between puzzle games vs mystery games#truly i should play more mystery games bc of how much fun I'm having with this one but alas I know if I play too many I'll get bored#this one's fun bc I love the over all story and all the mystery solving aspects is fun for being novel gameply dressing on top#probably just gonna return to studying math/phys once we're done the game bc it's a similar problem solving rush but more relevant to stuff#personal talk

HhhhhrrrrrrghhghhHHHHHRHRGRGRHGHHHHHHHHH I&'m NOT INTERESTED in another "beginner's guide to colour theory ^_^" type video THAT JUST REPEATS THE SAME INFORMATION AS LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE VIDEO ON THIS TOPIC EVER. I& swear every single art channel out there wants to cash in on that sweet beginner tutorial viewership by making YET ANOTHER COLOUR THEORY VIDEO that tells me& NOTHING!!!! FLYSHIT!!!!!!! It's always:
Colour wheel exists
Colour combinations like complimentary/triad/etc
If they're feeling fancy they'll tell you to use cool shadows and warm lights
If they're feeling REALLY fancy shmancy they'll explain the 60/30/10 principle
And THAT'S IT. AND THERE IS ABSOLUTELY ZERO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHAT'S EXPLAINED IN "BEGINNER" COLOUR THEORY AND "ADVANCED" COLOUR THEORY. IT'S ALL THE SAME FUCKING YOUTUBE SLOP!!!!!!!! I&'M SICK OF IT!!!!!!!! I&'LL KILL YOU!!!!!!!
#ok luiger#sorry I&'m fucking tired#I&'m genuinely interested in colour theory and want to learn more but this is not it#I&'m honestly shocked that it feels like no one else is calling out the absolute slop that this whole genre of videos is#like ok sure it's like. a pretty wide topic. it feels silly to complain that there's a lot of videos on the topic of colour#but it feels like all of these videos are just gathering it from other videos and they're very poorly researched#if you're an art channel even if you're a digital artist you should explain chiaroscuro.#you should explain underpainting. you should explain some basic terminology that people confuse all the time re: tint/shade/tone#and if you're bringing up the colour wheel you should DEFINITELY explain that there are MANY DIFFERENT WAYS to arrange a colour wheel#and I&'m not even talking about the rgb vs cmyk vs rgy primary colour differences#I&'m talking specifically that there is no point talking about colours being opposite from each other on the colour wheel#if the wheel itself differs this wildly depending on what the arrangement is based on#what's the point if the opposite of red could be either green or blue depending on the scenario!!!!!!!#I&'m fucking pissed is all. I&'d make my& own tutorial or knowledge compendium or whatever#but it's been something I&'ve been picking up new knowledge bits about here and there for years now#and it'll likely take years more before I& can confidently try organizing these thoughts and putting them together#in the meantime. I&'m going to seethe and piss myself& every time another one of these videos gets reccomended to me& by youtube.

Got some more Zooey practice in, I'm almost done practicing her combos 😤👏 I'm having a bit of trouble with the timing of some of them, but I feel like with enough practice I can get good at pulling them off consistently
#gui plays granblue vs#i don't think i'll ever be like#good good#at playing as her#but i do feel like with some practice i can become like#competent? maybe?#i'm working with 20+ years of zero fighting game practice and experience so honestly all things considered i'm doing alright#going from not being able to even touch the tutorial enemy to being able to pull complicated combos in 3 days feels good#the one fighting game i played in 20+ years was tatsunoko vs capcom and even then that was a one time rental lol#i played some mortal combat at my friend's house and got my ass handed to me by him#because obviously what would you expect pitching a noob to someone who plays the game enough to have a favorite character#i guess i plays smash bros???? but that's a completely different genre of fighting game obcs#obvs*
