a question, since i've seen conflicting info: does tumblr's native alt text feature work with your screenreader? is it better to use the native feature or add alt text after?

I've only ever used the built in screenreader on my iphone, but it does read out tumblr alt text in the app and in a mobile browser. a screenreader definitely should read out the alt text for images, that's like, the main point of alt text, and it's not exactly hard to implement alt text properly, it's just an html tag (granted I'm not sure how it works in mobile apps). It may be that people have had problems in the past or on other platforms (the type of screenreader shouldn't really matter, I don't think, unless all alt text was broken on that screenreader, but software can be weird) so if anyone has had problems or is currently having them please feel free to correct me! I really am not very good at using a screenreader lol. There are so many hand gestures and I usually use it when my light sensitivity is really bad and I'm generally feeling like shit so it's pretty rare for me to be like, browsing using a screenreader, usually it's more of an "opening some apps to switch what I'm listening to" situation.

Whether alt text or an image ID in normal text after the image is better is something different people disagree on a lot, if you want to be extra accessible the best option is to have both. Personally I put mine in just the alt text because it's less to scroll past/listen to twice/skip if it's on a screenreader (which I know is kind of a dumb reason) but really either one is a solid option and a lot better than nothing.

edit because i forgot: if you're putting the image description below a cut or something it's definitely better to include alt text so ppl don't have to navigate away to get the context and also, if anything ever happens to your blog or you delete the post, the image description is then lost

ooooh, yes! I think Dan feels pretty clearly Luke in many ways (aside from the fashion sense, but I’ve fixed this in my mind by making it a gender swap—which honors Luke initially being a woman and the general themes of the original show anyway plus wlws—and deciding Dan is a flannel lesbian who only wears black and that’s what Phil makes fun of), but I guess Phil feels less clearly Lorelai to me? Still enough similarities though to make the dynamic work I think, with a dnp twist of course.

I would also tend to make Phil the one more likely to demonstrate love through gestures and gifts, so that’s tripping me up a bit too, but that thing with Luke saving the horoscope from when they first met? And Dan saving the first pinof question list? Yeah, okay.

There are just so many little things to dnp-ify and cry over (Dan making instant coffee for Phil even though she thinks it’s disgusting, Phil being addicted to sugar and Dan trying to get her to eat healthier, but still constantly bringing her food (I’m leaning towards Dan owning a cafe? because even if it’s an au I just cannot wrap my head around mr. cooked-pasta-without-water owning a diner), Phil buying Dan colorful pieces of clothing and that being the only color she ever wears, and just so many little things they do for each other throughout the years) ;_;

1. For many years I danced and played drums with a local street samba troupe.

2. I have lived in the same apartment for almost 11 years and my landlady and the other tenant are in their 70s and I freaking love living in my own little intergenerational commune, though I cry a little tear whenever I calculate how much rent I’ve paid in that time.

3. Over the course of 2018, a friend and I bicycled to all 30 public library locations in my city just because it was a fun project.

4. I have 4 nephews, 4 nieces, 1 great-nephew, and 1 great-niece. They call me Mimi.

5. I have a double uvula.

Phandom Creators Class of 2019

It’s definitely been an interesting, at times very exciting, and at times very slow year in the phandom, and more than ever this year I was so grateful for all of the fanworks people created that kept me engaged in dnp. As I did last year, I wanted to create a list of people who posted a new kind of fanwork in the phandom for the first time this year. I’m sure this doesn’t capture everyone who that applies to, but it’s a lovely collection of art, fic, moodboards, and fanvids that were added to our community this year. I also might be a bit biased towards this particular year of new creators because this was the year I posted my first fic ever!

The list below represents 21 different creators with 26 self-recs! I also made a spreadsheet with all of the information below plus some more, if you find that easier to work with. Thank you so much to everyone who posted some sort of Dan and Phil themed creative content this year, and to all of the people who enjoyed and engaged with them!
