The Science of Seeing Colors: Why Everyone’s Color Experience is Different
Tumblr media
Colors have an undeniable impact on our lives, influencing emotions, decisions, and even the way we interact with the world. Have you ever paused to wonder if the vibrant scarlet you see is the same red someone else perceives? Welcome to the fascinating realm of color perception, where the science of sight meets the art of individuality. Today, we're diving into why and how different people might see colors differently.
The Science Behind Seeing Color
At its core, color perception is a dance between light, our eyes, and our brains. The eyes capture light, which is then interpreted by the brain, forming the colors we see. But here's where it gets interesting—what we actually perceive can vary widely from person to person.
Cones and Color Vision: The human eye contains three types of cone cells, each sensitive to different wavelengths of light (red, green, and blue). Variations in these cells can lead to different color perceptions.
Color Blindness: This isn’t just about seeing the world in black and white. People with color vision deficiencies might find it challenging to distinguish between certain colors, often red and green.
Factors Influencing Color Perception
Genetics: Our genes play a significant role in determining how we perceive color. Genetic differences can lead to variations in cone cell distribution, affecting how we see color.
Lighting Conditions: The lighting around us can dramatically alter our color perception. A shirt might look navy under fluorescent lights but seem almost black in dim lighting.
Neurological Factors: Our brains process colors differently, too. This is why some people claim certain colors have a "warmer" or "cooler" tone than others might describe.
Cultural Influences: Culture shapes how we interpret colors. For instance, white is often associated with purity in Western societies, while it might represent mourning in others.
Age and Eye Health: As we age, our lenses can yellow, which might affect the way we perceive certain colors. Additionally, conditions like cataracts can influence color vision.
Curious Cases in Color Perception
Tetrachromacy: A rare occurrence where individuals possess a fourth type of cone cell, potentially allowing them to see up to 100 million colors—a whole spectrum we can't even imagine!
Synesthesia: Some people experience synesthesia, where stimulation of one sensory pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second pathway. This can result in seeing specific colors when hearing certain sounds.
Embracing Colorful Diversity
Understanding that we all see colors a bit differently is both intriguing and useful. It reminds us of the subjective nature of perception and can foster greater empathy and communication in design, marketing, and even daily interactions. So, next time you and a friend disagree on whether a dress is blue or black, embrace the diversity of perception and enjoy the kaleidoscope of perspectives!
In a world brimming with color, isn't it wonderful to know that we each have a unique lens through which we view it? Whether you're an artist seeking inspiration or just someone admiring a sunset, the variations in color perception add an extra layer of beauty to the world around us. Keep seeing the world your way—after all, that's what makes it truly vibrant!

Okay, you know how bird don't ACTUALLY look the way we think they do?
They are far more colorful? But only to the eyes of other birds?
And it has to do with how light reflects off them and how their eyes are shaped etc etc.?
Well..... humans can see the most shades of green, right? But! We sure as shit can't see UltaViolet and InfraRed? Or shades BEYOND those. Ectoplasmic colors. Magical ones. Third eye, need to see with your SOUL type ones.
Danny? Could very well still have lil baby "kitten's eyes who haven't open yet" syndrome.
He thinks the Zone is Green and his hair is white.
But it's not.
His hair is Starlight colored. Frost. His suit is specifically "the void between stars" colored. Which looks... different? Then black? No, no, guys. How can you guys not see it? It looks REALLY different! How did he not NOTICE before?! They're not ever CLOSE to the same shade! It's like calling salmon and hot pink the same. You know... if you were to compare an actual fish and some irradiated, violently glowing version of "hot pink".
......guys?
His gloves are.... guys, these ares stars. Pressed so close together there's no gap. His body is the night sky, all rearranged. He's wearing SPACE, guys.
*continues to stare at his gloves for the next five hours*
Now... why is this relevant? Because! Danny slowly, as all humans do, adjusts! It's like finally having glasses after years of blurry vision. He... forgets, what it was like, not NOT See Zone Colors. Not completely, mind you, but enough he has to be reminded.
And the Zone? A Realm of the Dead. Specifically, the great catch-all and highway of the Dead. They get EVERYBODY. Misfits and vagabonds. Those who don't quite fit. Funky lil dudes. And of course, assholes, but everybody has those! See, Zone colors?
Are DIFFERENT.
They're all of um!
It's like looking at the technicolor, stobe light, multi galaxies in one, Sun. Tingly(tm)!!! You get used to it. What helps? Is that as garish as the Zone is? The painting and grand tapestry of it all? Keeps changing. Like weather. If it's too much for you, you can stay inside your Lair until the current Color changes. Until the designs shift. Vibe changes.
There are even glasses for that! "Temperate" areas for people to set up, that get headaches or are just... kinda killjoys. Too each their own. Though the stormy areas? Those guys are freaks. Watch out for those guys. They're the kind who stare directly are stars until their eyes burn out.
Where was I? Oh yeah! Danny!
No longer a wee baby, smol baby, twig-o!
Sad. We miss it.
But he did get used to Seeing The Colors. Got a handle on his powers. And! Finally worked with his parents on how to safely turn the portal OFF. There was much booing. Cries of "kill joy" and "booo! You suck!". But? Like? Dude DID have the right to protect his home. Go to college. What can you do?
Problem with THAT is? Baby grew into his "built like a brick shit house of constantly running off to literally tackle the Supernatural excellence" Fenton genetics. He Tall. Muscles! And he PUMPING out "somethings fucked up with me" Vibes!
Add in his DEEPLY Sus off hand comments. Weird ability to tell when someone has or is about to die. Basic immunity to the cold. Fuckin EYE GLOW?
Ha ha... *Horror movie screams from his college dorm mates*
Clearly a demon!
He gets kicked out. Well... not kicked out. He's a model student and broken no rules. They'd never survive the lawsuit. But... he's? STRONGLY INCOURAGED to finish his education elsewhere. Repeatedly. By like... 15 colleges.
Sam is not just livid, she's actively foaming at the mouth.
Breathe, Sam! Remember what your doctor said! Your mortal body can't handle that kinda Vengance spiral! Think of your blood pressure! Breathe!!! (Were not for the laws of this land... and the weak, fleshy constraints of her mortal form!)
Thankfully? Tucker's been interning, remotely of course, with Wayne Industries. He asked his manager where he could find some of those scholarship forms. (Since Gotham University is just a touch out of Danny's price range.) Manager wanted to know why. And oh! Oh holy shit. Apparently? Danny is the hot new office gossip.
People in the main office are OUTRAGED. Danny's "too spooky"?! Too FUCKIN SPOOKY!? Are you KIDDING THEM? Even juicier, a Meta kid from some wacky ghost hunters turned scientists. From a line of Supernatural hunters. Wants to be a aeronautics engineer.
Ooooooh how SPOOKY! Better watch out! He'll design an ENGINE at yooooou!
Fuckin casuals. Non-Gothamites are WEAK. "Too scary" their collective asses. Yeah, maybe the kid SHOULD come too Gotham. He can be the weird kid. Mildly unsettling or something. His powers won't be SHIT in Gotham. Just remind him to buy a gas mask.
So! Danny gets his Scholarship! Merrily packs his bags for darker, Gothic hellscape hills. Unaware... that Constantine has been following reports of a "demon" that he's? 80% sure is a Banshee but MIGHT be a winter spirt with a shtick? For the past 13 colleges. He's getting closer. And this sucker is a strong one.
Not "this is going to cause me serious, life imperilling danger" strong. But more? "Man, that cat is HUUUUUGE". Could he still get mauled a lil? Yeah. Scratched to all hell and back? Probably! But DIE? Unlikely.
He just needs to know why the FUCK this spirit his hanging around colleges.
Which is made harder... by the fact that what HE sees? And what OTHER people see? When they look at this guy? Separate things. Yeah, he'd LOVE to give you guys a description! IF HE HAD ONE.

x
Today is the day you start your new job as the team’s liaison. You’ve always been part of this since JJ was the main person to deal with it. However, she’s been promoted to profiler which means all the slack now falls on your shoulders. You love interacting with families and comforting them when they most need it.
This is the first case when it’s just going to be you, so you’re kind of nervous about it. Before going into the briefing room, you decide to touch up on your makeup and hair as if you’re going in front of millions on the TV to present the case. You take out your contacts and leave them to rehydrate on your desk while you go to the bathroom to fix your makeup.
Once you’re done, you make sure not to look into anyone’s eyes as you make your way back to your desk. The first thing you do is put away your makeup. The second thing you do is grab your contacts to put them back in but they’re not where you left them.
“Shit,” you curse and go through your entire desk. “No, this isn’t happening.”
You’re panicking at the thought of not having your contacts. You don’t need them to see, in fact, you have 20/20 vision. No, you use them only for color because you have a rare thing called heterochromia. Your right eye is bright blue and your left is bright green. You were born with two different eye colors. No one in your family has this genetic but you, so you have no idea where it came from.
Ever since you were enrolled in school, you were bullied for your eyes. It didn’t start getting bad until middle school when kids were more focused on appearances than learning and making friends. Kids in elementary school actually found them to be cool but only because they were little kids who didn’t know any better.
Your peers made you hate this part of you even though you can’t do anything about it. As soon as you started high school, you begged your mom to get you colored contacts. You’ve been wearing them ever since even into your adult years. You choose a natural blue to make yourself look more normal. Had you not had those, you would for sure get bullied even worse than in middle school.
The longer you went wearing them the more people thought your eyes were just one color. No one at work knows about this or so you thought. The only person who might know about this is Spencer but that’s only because you two have been friends with benefits for quite some time now. It helps to have one to work off the stress from work. Plus, he’s an amazing lover so there’s a plus.
You two aren’t dating just fucking a lot.
While he was getting ready this morning at your place, you were in the bathroom rushing to do your makeup. You hadn’t put your contacts in just yet so if he were to walk in the bathroom, he’d see your eyes for what they truly are. He was getting ready and peeked through the open door to see if you were close to being done when he saw the beauty in your eyes. He didn’t say anything about it so as not to embarrass you.
He walks into the bullpen from the break room to see you panicking.
“What’s wrong?” he asks.
“Where are my contacts? I just had them on my desk.”
“I didn’t know you wore contacts,” he lied. You refuse to look at him without them in. “I’m sure it’ll be alright. You have glasses, right?”
“Yes, but--”
“But what? What’s the problem?”
“Never mind,” you groan and continue looking for them.
“Hey, look at me.” When you don’t, he sets his coffee down on the desk and grabs your chin gently. He makes you look at him but you close your eyes so he doesn’t see their colors. “Open your eyes.”
“No,” you shake your head.
“Darling, open your eyes,” he says gently.
He would be the person to find out eventually. You sigh and open your eyes to show him the rarity you have. Now that he gets to see them up close, he’s falling more in love with you. You might not have feelings for him but he certainly has them for you. He only keeps you as a fuck buddy because if he were to tell you the truth, he might lose you.
“What beautiful eyes you have.”
“They’re ugly,” you sigh and pull away from him.
“Who told you that?”
“Everyone I’ve ever known,” you scoff. You look at your watch and notice the time. “Shit, I have to give the case out.”
“No one is going to notice.”
“Are you kidding me? They’re so bright. They stand out.”
“Fine, if they make comments, I’ll handle it.”
You have no choice but to go in there without your contacts. You sigh and grab your things before heading to the briefing room with Spencer. Everyone is already in there waiting so you immediately get started. As you’re talking, you notice Spencer watching you with a smile on his face.
“You’re beautiful,” he mouths to you.
Your cheeks heat up but you don’t let it show how happy he makes you. The briefing only lasts thirty minutes before Hotch announces wheels up. When everyone is packing up to get out of there, you notice something sticking out of Spencer’s back pocket.
Your contact case. You want to be mad at him for taking it but maybe it’s time to let your rarity shine.

fremen!benegesserit! reader x paul atreides
honestly, never thought i'd see the day where i'd write x reader again, but here we are <3 this wonderful prompt got the juices flowing and isn't that what these exercises are for! i'm a bit late for this week but thank you for reading!

“You need to be quicker. Don’t drag your feet.”
Paul nods. “Right, okay.”
Your gaze flits in his direction. You stand above him on the curve of the desert dunes with Paul further down in the basin below, inspecting his technique as he prepares for Shai-Hulud.
Paul moves like the shadow that walks beneath your feet as the sun cuts your shape across the dunes. Lean, dark, and mirroring your every movement. Like you, it was clear that the boy has had a lifetime of rigorous training. The speed at which he picks up your instruction is uncanny, almost supernatural.
Even Paul’s looks make you uneasy. His sharp and striking features, his hazel-green eyes, everything of him that you knew to be the product of careful genetic selection.
Heat ripples all around you, billowing your cream-colored aba robes and veil like sand in the wind. The beating sun is unforgiving this time of day, and so are you.
“Be quicker, princling,” you speak through your face-covering. “You want to be worm-food? Because that’s what you’ll be if you’re not moving fast enough.”
The nickname bristles his annoyance, the slightest pull in his shoulder blades that is quick to your trained Bene Gesserit eye, but one that Paul easily masks as his shoulders relax and the emotion passes through him. With the weight of his silence, of his full attention, you consider, just for a moment, telling him what you truly think of this prophecy.
Other offworlders had come to Arrakis before, claiming divinity and prophetic visions. But they were soon martyred by the desert or killed by their own ignorance.
Why should this boy be any different?
That is why you have been pushing Paul so hard in his initiation training, an order that had come directly from Arrakis’s new Reverend Mother; the weirding woman and Paul’s birth mother. In that cave-chamber, you had watched Lady Jessica drink The Water of Life and ascend into the motherhood that had once belonged to your dying grandmother for generations.
You had given no water to your grandmother, the Fremen ritual of suppressing tears as ancient as the desert itself, yet it hadn’t stopped the cold and quiet anger from simmering in your belly. At Stilgar’s easy trust to welcome in the offworlder woman and her witching son that your Fremen peers already called Mahdi. To allow Lady Jessica the rite of passage.
Lady Jessica’s power frightened you. A pale phantom of a woman with piercing blue eyes, she had recognized your importance as the last Reverend Mother’s gifted granddaughter and calculated how you could benefit their cause. More specifically, how to benefit Paul.
And as a fellow sister of the Bene Gesserit and perhaps most unsettling of all, you had perceived Lady Jessica’s use of the Voice on you, like worm-poison in your mind. As she had brushed past you in the hallways of the sietch, the dusty air tasting like the breath you held in your chest, you felt the cold blue of her eyes. A single command hummed through your bones.
“Teach him.”
Gifted as you were, you had tried to reject her influence, to fight her Voice’s power, but you were not strong enough against the woman from Caladan. And like an out-of-body experience, not in control of your own being, you had watched yourself glide towards Paul’s chambers with the words of forced friendship already forming on your tongue.
The path had been set.
You would show Paul the ways of the desert, yes. But you would not do so with kindness.
Now, outfitted with his fremkit and stillsuit, you guide Paul down the path that has been prophesied by the Bene Gesserit order and your Fremen people alike. Your two circles of life intersecting in an eclipse, swallowing each other like a snake with its own tail.
Maybe this is why Lady Jessica had chosen you.
“Move faster, or this lesson is over,” you growl to Paul. “I don’t know what gravity is like on Caladan, but you run like you have maker hooks stuck up your ass.”
His form was in fact impeccable, but you wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of proceeding with no corrections.
Paul’s laughter echoes through the desert basin. You hadn’t expected him to find humor in your insult. He turns up to face you, his black curls flowing in a messy halo. Paul swings the maker hook in his right hand in a perfect circle.
“I’m ready. I’m not afraid.” Paul tells you.
You regard him with a defiant tilt of your chin, then reach into the silks of your robes. You pull out the thumper that the Fedaykin girl, Chani, had lent to you for this exercise. In one fluid motion, you have clicked the thumper open and impaled it into the sand. The steady rhythm of the mechanism beats through your chest, echoing across the endless dunes. The very heartbeat of the desert.
The sand at your feet quivers.
“Then run like it.”

MY AU PK'S COMPLETE LORE!! (I think)
I'm probably forgetting some stuff but HERE WE GO!! Also feel free to ask me anything about- any of this, im happy to answer!!
Wyrm Biology
Wyrms are a type of dragon, divided into two types, usually referred to as dawn and dusk wyrms. All wyrms share some common traits such as having horns ( the amount depends on the type of wyrm) and being able to change their form in a dire emergency, all wyrms are immortal meaning they will never get old or die of old age, all wyrms can use a plasma blast in self defense too, wyrms burrow underground to make dens for their families, young wyrms just burrow for fun making tunnels and such, occasionally making a small underground spot to hide what would become their hoard. All wyrms are protective of their hoards, and will usually only let their mates in to the hoard
All wyrms mate for life, despite being absolutely massive (avenerge sized wyrm is 13500ft to 3 miles long) (longest wyrm ever recorded in history was 5.5 miles long / 29040ft / 8.8 kilometers) and territoryal, they are very caring and gentle creatures, especially when it comes to ones they hold dear.
Female wyrms only have one egg every 500 years, but usually end up having around 6-8 offspring
Wyrms have pretty bad eyesight so they have heightened senses of smell and hearing to make up for the poor vision
Wyrms are omnivours, meaning they can and will eat both meat and vegetation. Though wyrms tend to prefer hunting for food then picking tiny berries off a bush they can hardly see
All wyrms have stripes or spots as well, even both at times, though there is a rare genetic mutation that some wyrms get that makes them entirely one color, scales, skin, fur, horns, all one color
Wyrms are very very intelligent and can learn a lot of things in a matter of days, they also can adapt to things fairly quickly as well. Wyrms also have an ability to open an use portals to teleport around.
Dawn wyrms
Dawn wyrms typically have lots of horns on their heads and fur, they also are pale in color (different shades of gray and white) they have fur tufts that extend down from the sides of their heads. When hunting dawn wyrms will lower their heads and wait perfectly still, until they feel vibrations from the ground in the fur tufts and when they have the chance they will strike, this has been proven very effective because dawn wyrms have a 98% success rate when it comes to hunting Dawn wyrms do not have wings at all, and prefer to stay in more dusty areas, but close to mountain bases, dawn wyrms have smaller eyes than dusk wyrms to block out sunlight and dust
Dusk wyrms
Dusk wyrms have fewer horns on their heads (at max 4-6) and no fur, Dusk wyrms can be found pretty much anywhere, they are typically darker shades as well. Dusk wyrms are typically shades of gray and black, it is very rare to find a dusk wyrm with any white on them. Dusk wyrms also hunt in darker areas, meaning they have bigger eyes to semi detect movement when hunting. Though Dusk wyrms have about a 70-80% success rate when it comes to hunting, they’re a lot more clumsy, which means they resort to vegetation when hunting is a bust. Dusk wyrms are also typically on the bigger side of the scale of wyrm size. Dusk wyrms can also summon wings made of soul, they naturally produce a lot of soul so they can summon their wings whenever they need to, most of them can summon 4-7 pairs of wings.
PK lore
PK’s parents-birth
PKs mother Sam was a dawn wyrms looking for a different place to live, the place she had been staying her whole life was running low on food so she decided it’d be best if she left and went to find a mate elsewhere. Meanwhile PKs father Luci (Full name Lucifer) was struggling because his family saw him as bad luck, because he hatched all black and the biggest of his litter. His parents saw this as a threat to the rest of their children so they chased him away the second he no longer needed them to survive. The two wyrms were on the run from their home lands when they quite literally ran into each other. Sam was surprised but very excited because this big wyrm she just found seemed mate worthy, Luci on the other hand was weary this wyrm he just found would chase him away too, but she didn’t. For months they courted each other until finally becoming mates.
They had their first egg in the year 24 (yes, year 24.) and they had their first son named Adam, they had their second egg in 524, and they had their son TJ, they had their third egg in 1024, august 30th  their son PK was born, just like Luci, PK had the solid color gene too, though PK was all white and the runt of the litter, making him the smallest of his siblings, after PK was born Luci and Sam their final egg in 1524, their daughter Enid.
Early life
A lot of PKs early life (from being born to age of maturity) was spent being carried around by his parents. Because PK was so small his parents feared he’d get lost, hurt, or squished. Though PK did get along great with his siblings, PK was a little closer to his younger sister than his brothers, mainly because Adam and TJ were known to take full trees out of the ground and wack each other with them. Despite this, Adam and TJ were always gentle when interacting with PK. PK was a total mama's boy too, he followed his mother around everywhere, the only time Luci had to keep PK in the den so he wouldn’t follow Sam was when Sam would go out hunting, she always returned with more than enough food for her family. PK was very curious about everything around him, and just curious in general, once he wanted to try out flying without his parents around to supervise, because he was young and not used to flying yet, he crashed and got hurt, so Luci had to go find him and bring him home, he wasn’t allowed to leave the den for a month after that incident. Once PK got older and had reached the age of maturity, Sam and Luci let him go out hunting with them, despite being small PK was still a very good hunter, though all that didn’t last very long.
For years wyrms were being hunted and killed because a clan of dragon hunters (the godseekers) believed that drinking their blood would grant immortality and make them all powerful.
While Wyrm blood did not make mortals IMMORTAL- it did extend their lives a few years or so. The godseekers clan leader, Godseeker herself, took it upon herself to kill every single wyrm in existence. And of course Godseeker went after PKs family too. Godseeker went after Adam first, he was able to get home but unfortunately his wounds were fatal and he passed the second he made it back to his family, which meant godseeker went after Luci next. Sam saw all this happening and had to make a very difficult choice, would she let all her children die alongside her? Or risk it and take away one of her children in hopes they would live. Sam decided to risk it and take one of her children far far away, TJ was trying to assist Luci in fighting Godseeker, so Sam had to decide between Enid and PK. Enid was bigger than PK yes, but that made her an easier target, she was also still quite young so the chances of her surviving on her own were slim. PK was older, smaller, and had good survival skills, meaning his chances of surviving this were much much higher. Sam took PK and went as far as she could, she dropped him at the side of a mountain and screeched at him to run, while Sam rushed back to attempt to help fight off Godseeker.
Post Godseeker
(year: 1908-1910)
PK ended up transforming, which only a full blooded wyrm can do ONCE in their life. He made himself smaller, gave himself limbs, and ran. He ran as fast as he could. For the following months he was still getting used to his new body, and how to use it, but he was getting on just fine. One day he was climbing down a mountain and stopped on the top of a hill, at the base he could see a village of some kind, perhaps a city? (he didn’t know all he could see were colored blotches or something) unfortunately since he wasn't used to his new body, he slipped and that sent him tumbling down the hill.
In the city, a woman, White lady (WL) was stringing up her laundry when she saw something (PK) tumbling down the hill, she quickly rushed inside to grab some towels and ran over to help. When she found him at the base of the hill, he had been knocked out from hitting his head, which now had a crack all across his face, and he had a few cuts and scrapes here and there.
After PK woke up, he was very confused, he didn’t know where he was, he didn’t know anything about anything around him. WL tried to calm him down but all he received was some growling and screeches from PK. Once PK realized WL wasn't going to hurt him, he softened up a bit, letting her help him, even though at times he nipped at her because rubbing alcohol on wounds is painful.
WL quickly started asking PK who he was, where he was from, what he was. PK didn’t know any languages so he only stared at her. While frustrating, WL began to teach PK how to speak, write, and read. While WL was at work or the library, PK was home learning, and with his very high wyrm intelligence, he learned to speak fluently in a month or so, he started to read any book he could get his hands on.
PK really liked WL, so he did anything he could to try to impress her, though obviously dragon courtship didn't work on WL, luckily she didn't know that's what he was trying to do, so PK went and learned how to properly impress her. Bringing her flowers, giving her gifts, ect, in time PK was able to win over WLs heart with ease and they began dating.
Soon enough PK started working. He ended up working with the police because he was able to figure out cases very quickly, and he wasn't afraid to go after anyone, despite being short.
During PKs time working with the police, he began to gain a lot of popularity. He was smart, caring, charming. And while working with the police, PK was able to arrest most of and crack down on a mafia. He got super close to arresting the whole entire mafia, but they went radio silent and he lost any trace of the mafia higher ups. The police chief had PK retire at that point, so he could focus on his lover (WL) and their life. (Year: 1950)  meanwhile the radiance, the current ruler of the lands, was not happy with how popular this God was getting. She started going mad, attacking anyone who dared question her. PK knew if this continued, Radiance's wrath would destroy the lands. So PK took it upon himself to defeat the Radiance, to protect everyone.
There's a God list, based on how powerful each God is, PK is the God above everyone else, he's the God of the universe and everything beyond. Radiance is the second most powerful God, followed by WL and Unn, then the nightmare king.
Because of this, PK was able to defeat, and actually kill Radiance. He got pretty injured from the battle, so of course WL took care of him. While PK was recovering, and probably as high as a kite because of 1950s pain meds, the people were very inspired by PK, and wanted to make him King, since there needed to be a new Ruler.
In 1960, PK was made the King of what was now Hallownest. PK still lived in WLs home, and so while designing the palace they'd be living in, PK made sure to add anything WL wanted to be there too.
(Year:1970) The palace was completed and PK and WL moved into it together, PK was establishing his advisors and his court, while his and WLs friends, immortal beings but not God's, became the five great knights.
(Year:1984) after years of asking and nagging PK had finally proposed and him and WL were getting married. PK made sure it was the best wedding every, anything for his love. during the wedding PK made a small ceremony for WL being ‘crowned’ queen. For the next 15 years, PK and WL established their kingdom. Meeting with Queen Vespa, to discuss the Hive, in the end Vespa gave them her kingdom, because her and WL were already best friends, and Vespa knew her kingdom would be in good hands with PK and WL ruling it, plus Vespa wanted to focus on thinking of settling down with her lover. The mantis Lords agreed that their kingdom would be in good hands being ruled by PK and WL. Unn being the oldest god, was willing to give over her kingdom, Green Grotto, because she was old, and tired, and ready for someone else to rule.
After establishing their kingdom, PK and WL began to relax a bit and do things for fun. They were contacted and PK was asked to play the doctor on Doctor Who, which he agreed, and for awhile WL was the doctors companion (doctor and donna) towards the end of PKs time on the show, WL asked if they could stop acting and start really talking about having a family.
The kids
Before PK and WL had kids, PK knew it'd be an insane danger to his children if godseeker was still out there, so without telling WL he tracked down godseeker and defeated her, sealing her away where NO ONE would find her.
in 2003 PK and WL were excitedly awaiting to become parents. Though the pure joy was short lived, PK ended hearing about the radiance trying to return to the waking world via a dream infection, and only a being of God and void could contain her, meaning one of his children. PK spent many sleepless nights trying to find an alternative, but he couldn't. In the end PK put his first child's egg in the abyss fountain. He took the egg out a few months later and he and WL waited for it to hatch, begging that maybe, because the egg was quite big, that there'd be twins inside, and they'd have one child to raise.
Against all odds, they got what they wanted. One child was normal, the other, completely hollow, if you didn't look close you'd assume they were dead. The child PK and WL were so lucky to have, they named them Hollow, the completely void Child, they named Kin.
PK and WL were pretty nervous first time parents but they were doing their best, and they did amazing.  PK was able to teach Hollow to summon their wings and fly by the time they were 5. But the other child, Kin, was still needed to be sealed away, as an extra protective measure, Monomon, Lurien, and Herrah all became dreamers.
(year: 2010, crazy I know)
PK met with Herrah to try to compromise over her becoming a Dreamer, herrah didn't like that and hurt PK really badly, despite that he went back and still gave Herrah what she wanted, a child.
A few months later Herrah became a dreamer. Along with Monomon and Lurien, and kin was sealed away. Losing a child was really hard on PK and WL, making them go into hiding for Awhile.
But on December 7th, 2010, Hornet was brought to the palace, she was only 3 days old. PK and WL immediately jumped into action, getting anything and everything they needed to take care of Hornet, and WL adopted her immediately. For the next 7 years PK and WL were very happy raising Hollow and Hornet.
Though during that time an assassin had attempted to assassinate Hollow, cutting off their right arm, in self defense, Hollow threw the assassin out the window, sending them down a rocky hill, resulting in the assassin's death. Hollow was brought to the hospital and they were treated they were put physical therapy, so they could learn how to only use their left arm.
Then PK and WL decided to have another child, after WL had her egg (those who can have eggs have the egg for 3 months then the egg is just, an egg, for 6 months) PK and WL were excitedly awaiting their final child to hatch.
Unfortunately again the pure excitement was short lived.
Two weeks after WL had the egg, PK was stabbed by an assassin who had been pretending to be a royal guard. The assassin stabbed PK through the spine, vertically, it's a miracle PKs alive, (AND CAN WALK STILL- )
PK plasma blasted the assassin in the face to attempt to keep them from attacking his family.
PK was rushed to the hospital and had emergency surgery to stitch his organs back together and screw his spine back together.
PK spent months in the hospital recovering, one day, on Halloween, PK and WLs egg was hatching back at the palace. PK was able to open a portal to the closet stag station so his family could get home quickly, though cars exist, stags are faster. Once his family left and PK was there alone, he just made a portal home and went home to be there with his egg when it hatched. Naturally when WL got there she was freaked out seeing her husband laying there with the egg when he was supposed to be at the hospital.  PK insisted he stay and WL let him. Afterwards, PK made a portal for himself and hollow to go back to the hospital.
For the following months PK recovered and went through a lot of physical therapy. He now wears a back brace at all times because he has chronic pain I'm his back from being stabbed.
(Year: 2024)
Now days PK has a mostly normal life all things considered.  He runs Hallownest alongside his wife and has an amazing family life. :)
Important but idk where to put it
My friends AU Grimm Troupe realm hopped into mine, still not sure how, but they're my royal family's found extended family now
WL has an older brother named Willow and he is a MASSIVE jerk. He married Emilitia and they have two kids (Oakley and Maple) and now they're all banned from the palace because Emilitia just, decided to punch PK and broke his nose.
Wow didn't know it'd take me this long but this AU takes place above ground and everyone is people sized
PKs an artist and he taught Hollow how to draw, that's also kinda how PK designed the palace, he drew it
Because of PKs transformation, he has a pretty bad immune system, so the palace is always shiny because it's been cleaned and sterilized sometime in the past 2 or 3 hours.
PK and his kids still have dragon behaviors such as, rolling in grass, purring, tail wagging, hoarding, ect.
2 years ago (so 2022) Nightmare King, the boss of the nightmare mafia, and the one who sent the assassins after PK and Hollow, broke into the Palace trying to go after Hornet, luckily Hollow woke up and stopped him but NMK ended up smacking hollow in the face with the crowbar he had leaving them with the crack on their face. Afterwards PK had multiple troops storm NMKs house and arrest him.
Headcanons but imma add them anyway
When the seasons change PK has a solid week of his throat being scratchy and he can’t speak because of it, afterwards he’s fine so he assumes it’s dragon-like seasonal allergies.
PK and the kids eyes are two different shades of black, but only WL can tell the difference between their eyes and their pupils
Every few months PK and the kids tail scales shed, Hollow’s usually get stuck so PK helps them with getting the scales unstuck
PK and WL don’t know how old they are but PKs 1,000 and WLs 995
Because of being dragons, PK will sometimes go flying with Hollow and Hornet because the palace is on the edge of the city of tears (they overlook it from the palace gardens) and PK, Hollow, and Hornet will sometimes race around the city, occasionally accidentally scaring people because when flying fast, all of them make the night fury dive bomb sound.

Elain Archeron
For @elainarcheronweek
Elain Week 2024 Masterlist
Day 7: Growth
Summary: Elain gets a chance to talk to her younger self after she loses herself to her magic
Cw: None
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The air around her hummed with energy, tingling against her skin as if it were alive. Elain sighed softly, feeling the familiar sensation that always accompanied her moments of clarity. It was a strange, almost euphoric rush of knowledge and insight that left her breathless every time.
Elain was lost, wandering through her visions. She had been here before, but each time, it felt different. Her hands shook slightly as she clutched the ancient tome, its pages filled with mysterious symbols that seemed to flicker and dance.
The room before Elain shimmered, warping and distorting as if reality itself was bending to accommodate her request. She felt a shiver run down her spine as the air seemed to thicken, becoming harder to breathe. The colors around her grew more vibrant, the edges blurring until she could no longer discern where one ended and another began.
A soft glow emanated from the centre of the swirling vortex, coalescing into the form of a young girl with large, curious eyes that mirrored Elain's own. Her hair was darker, still holding onto the faint wisps of black that would eventually fade to a rich chestnut brown. The girl wore a simple white dress, its hem brushing against the floor, and looked up at Elain with discomfort etched across her delicate features.
"Mother?" The child asked, her voice tinged with uncertainty. "Why do I have to wear this?"
The voice she distinctly remembered as her mother's spoke from behind her, "Because Elain, you don't compete with Nesta, she's bolder, and has a much better chance with the Lord that you. You will only creat a distraction."
Elain watched as the ghostly image of her younger self stared back at her with wide, innocent eyes. Her heart clenched painfully at the sight of her reflection, feeling a pang of longing for those simpler times when life had been uncomplicated by grief and responsibility. The words echoing through the ethereal void were familiar - harsh reminders of how she'd been pushed aside so that Nesta could take center stage.
The girl tugged at the hem of her dress, clearly uncomfortable in such formal attire. "But why? I just want to dance," she pleaded softly, looking over at Elain with puppy-dog eyes full of unshed tears.
"You know you're not meant for this kind of life, Nesta is better than yo-"
"Hey, look at me," Elain knelt down in front of her younger self, "Look at me... Nothing she says matters."
Elain took a deep breath, steadying herself as she knelt down to meet the gaze of her younger self. There was something about seeing herself reflected back in those innocent eyes that brought forth a surge of determination within her. Despite everything she had endured since then, despite every hardship thrown at her, here she stood – still fighting for what mattered most.
"Listen to me," Elain said firmly but gently, trying to project an aura of confidence and strength that would resonate with the younger version of herself. "Nothing she says matters anymore because it's not true."
She reached out a hand towards the younger Elain who hesitantly placed hers into hers. A sense of warmth enveloped them both as they touched; it felt like electricity coursing through their veins - tangible proof that they shared something profound beyond mere genetics or biology.
"Who are you?" The young girl tilted her head.
Elain smiled, "I'm you, sweetheart..."
"I'm you…" Elain repeated softly, marvelling at how comforting those words sounded when spoken aloud. She felt an overwhelming sense of peace wash over her as she held onto the small hand of her younger self, feeling the delicate bones beneath her fingers.
Her heart swelled with pride and love for this little girl who carried within her the potential for greatness. It pained Elain to think about how much pain and suffering lay ahead for this precious soul, all because destiny had deemed it necessary to be the female she was now.
"But why am I wearing this stupid dress?" The child interrupted Elain's thoughts with a frown pulling at her lips.
Elain's sigh carried a hint of melancholy as she gazed down at the ornate gown adorning her younger self. The intricate embroidery and fine silk fabric were a testament to the wealth and status of the house. Still, to Elain, they represented confinement and restriction, a constant reminder of the expectations placed upon her. And the fancy thing was impractical to be gardening in.
"It's not a stupid dress, sweetie," she corrected gently, "It's just not made for you." Elain's thumb brushed tenderly over the girl's knuckles, seeking to impart wisdom and reassurance. "This life isn't yours. You were meant for so much more than being a pawn in someone else's game." As she spoke, Elain felt the weight of her own experiences settling upon her shoulders once more.
"Why do you have pointy ears?" She asked surprised, her eyes trailing the Faerie ears her future self had.
Elain chuckled softly, finding solace in the simplicity of her younger self's curiosity. The innocence reflected in those big doe-eyes was something she cherished deeply - it reminded her of who she used to be before fate had dealt its cruel hands over and over again.
"I've got pointy ears," Elain said proudly, pushing back strands of hair from her face to reveal the pair of elegant fae ears peeking out from underneath. "That's because we become High Fae."
Despite the gravity of their situation, there was something undeniably charming about watching awe spark in those bright eyes as they gazed upon Elain's pointed Fae ears for the first time. It warmed Elain's heart to see how fascinated this version of herself was by even such a mundane detail to her now. "Do you want to touch them?"
"Yeah..." The little Elain moved to grab the ears, gently feeling them, then she asked, "Laine, do we become prettier than Nesta? Do we get to dance with a Lord?"
"We don't compete with Nesta or Feyre for mother treating us wrong anymore. We stopped feeling small too. We stopped feeling small and insignificant because we realized that our worth wasn't defined by others." Elain sighed, nuzzling her face into her younger hands, she had long let go of the silent contempt their mother had put in her for Nesta, always comparing them and making Nesta be on top, of how she was nothing, could do nothing while Feyre was their sole provider, how she amounted to nothing, she had stuck by Nesta because she delivered all the verbal blows, they had long apologized and worked to fix everything, even if there were times she wondered how she could've been better. "And yes, we go get to dance with plenty Lords."
As Elain looked into the soft brown eyes of her younger self, she heard a voice behind her, "Elain! Elain!"
Elain gasped awake, she looked around the bright room, blinking her focus and her legs were on Nesta's lap, her sister was holding onto her hands in a death grip while Feyre held her shoulders. Before she could say anything Nesta and Feyre hugged her tightly.
"Feyre?" Elain stood up, and as she did, her younger self disappeared. "Is that you?"
"Elain come with me," Elain felt as if she was being dragged through her mind, Feyre's daemati abilities, Elain let her.
"What... What happened?" Elain asked, a little lightheaded.
"Oh that bitch," Nesta swore as she looked over Elain, "That witch! She gave you this poison..."
"I don't... Don't remember..." Elain slumped back into Feyre's arms.
"Rhys said it was your powers that led you to a hut in Illyria to a witch, she was seeking you out for some reason." Feyre said softly, massaging Elain's shoulders, "The poison trapped you into your own mind, making you halucinate."
"Are you hurt?" Nesta asked, holding onto her hands a little softer.
Elain smiled softly, "Not really... It was nice... Like really nice... I liked it." She leaned back on Feyre and Nesta rested her head on her shoulders, both the sisters holding onto their middle one tightly.

How should nekomimi be inherited to not look weird?
I think that if they are simply humans with certain animalistic traits then it can be done like irl phenotypes, basically "some mixed kids inherit them, some don't" and leave it here, so there can be a community of mostly cat people with some individuals with fully human features to not make it look weird (and vice-versa, some nekomimi people amongst "normal" humans who don't belong to any of the cultures of cat people).
But what about some more complicated feline features like vision or dietary needs and such?
And even more importantly, is my idea of how to do nekomimi genetics in a fantasy setting not weird in itself?
It's NOT weird. The only thing better than catgirls are catgirls who fit in the worldbuilding.
Now, if you want a technobabble excuse, you could always use homeobox genes that you could say develop different kinds of ears, tails (biologist note: this is NOT exactly how homeobox genes work, but they do kinda work as an technobabble excuse) inside a wider, let's say, "humanoid" species or genus. These could be inherited as diverse alleles of such traits (for example, the 'ears' gene could have cat-like, dog-like, human-like, etc. alelles) and also have mendelian or non-mendelian distributions. Suppose you want to make a fantasy mendelian system, you could say "cat ears are recessive, human ears are dominant" (note: "recessive" and "dominant" don't mean "worse" and "better" it just means than an allele is "hidden" or deactivated by the dominant one. Sorry if I make a mistake, I learned all this in Spanish) and figure out inheritance from there, just traits that are cleanly inherited in regular proportions. This is not how most genetics work, however. There's multiple kinds of non-mendelian inheritance... multiple alleles, codominance, sex-linked inheritance, and of course quantitative genetics which is when alleles don't manifest in a single discrete trait but rather a continous measurable one (such as height)... now I feel I'm doing my genetics course again, but I'm sure you can tell how such things can work if you read an intro text about it.
There's a bunch of caveats here, and I'm gonna speak very broadly here. In humans, there aren't single, well defined genes that codify appearance for, for example, hair texture and color, skin/eye color, etc. in the sense that there's a "blue eye gene" or "curly hair gene". In fact this is the case for most genes, most are multi-allelic or quantitative with different 'weights' for a continous trait. Or BOTH. People tend to inherit different genetic 'weights' (very unscientific term here, sorry) from one parent or another and this can be very random, with some expressing different traits even if having the same family (this is why you see people who resemble almost perfectly to one parent instead of a "mix" of both, and of course those who indeed look like a mix of both. And these in turn have nothing to do with genetic diseases, blood types, or other inheritable things) There are hundreds of genes involved in each trait of human appearance and they all interact with each other, and most aren't even known, we don't fully know the genes that regulate skin, hair or eye color, just to give a few examples. So it's almost never stuff like "dominant purple flower, recessive white flower", Mendel was VERY lucky and smart to pick out discrete alleles to find out his laws. Most traits aren't like that at all, especially in animals.
Which brings me to my next point. It's very unlikely mendelian inheritance of traits such as ears or tails would have evolved naturally in animals. The development of characteristics such as ears or tails is deep, deep in the early embryo development, a very fragile period for animals. A species that has such huge genetic variations in such key periods of development faces severe selective pressure and it's unlikely these extreme "alleles" would remain, errors on them would cause extreme malformations or just embryos not developing at all. Even humans have this trouble, the loss of tails in apes, for example, has let us to suffer from spina bifida, every body plan change has a huge cost and this is why animals are sometimes very conservative with it, most body plans are the modification of existing features rather than the apperance or removal of different ones, and this is at evolutionary scales, not even living populations. Of course, some animals are more, let's say, plastic, like dogs, but even they have a general body plan, there aren't dogs without ears or tails, for instance. Even dogs are the consequence of tens of thousands of very intensive artificial selection which did not happen naturally at all, I mean, it's not like poodles or daschunds have any sexual or natural selection advantage for themselves, they are adventageous for us. You can see that wild and feral dogs, without the pressure of human artificial selection tend to converge into a more general dog plan (the so called "pariah dog", but also see dingos, and of course wolves, I'm skipping a lot of stuff here), adapted to local climates.
Surprisingly, I can see diet being less problematic in this sense. After all, we know there are for example human populations adapted to lactose. Dogs have also evolved enzymes to digest carbohydrates which wolves don't have, while not as nutritious as their carnivorous diet it works better with our human diet. Different bacterial flora can also help digest things that are surprising though, such as cellulose (though bacterial flora is still an underrated and ongoing field of study) It's also much easier to imagine changes in dentition than the whole head plan. So I can easily imagine different populations adapting to different diets. Same with eyes, I mean, daltonic and colorblind human population exists, the EYE is mostly the same, but it works differently. But again, the body plan remains the same. Humans or dogs might have different aptitudes for diets, but they don't stop being omnivores or carnivores.
Of course, tis' fantasy. So why expect things to follow natural evolution? Hell, why even expect fantasy people in a pre-industrial setting to know about homeobox genes? Depending on your setting, it might be that these traits are stable and inheritable because of a magical curse/blessing, or that the gods or the inherent magic of the world said so. However, if you have a species that has multiple, very different appearances and those are inheritable, you're dealing with some rather heavy stuff here that redefines your concept of humanity. In Dungeon Meshi, for instance, they talk about this, as the typical "elf, dwarf, halfling, human" fantasy races all can and do have children with each other, and (spoilers!) they seem to have a common origin, and thus all are actually called "humanity" which is a very interesting concept, because, indeed, what else are they if they don't actually have any real biological barriers. Meanwhile, the differences with other more "distant" species? races? such as orcs and kobolds (canine-like) are shown as rather arbitrary and depending on the culture, in fact, even humans (or rather "tallmen") get excluded from "humanity" in some cases. (not even tackling the whole long-short lived races thing). Similarily, you could say these "nekomimi" are just humans with a particular blessing or curse (again, in Dungeon Meshi, there is Izutsumi), but that works on the particular designs of your fantasy world and magic system... and let's say that when such concepts have appeared in real life, well... I don't need to tell you these are rather heavy and controversial topics to tackle. I don't think you should shy away from portraying them, but again, it's something to think about very carefully.
Since this is a heavy topic, I'm gonna take you out of fantasy for a sci-fi perspective. In my biopunk setting (it's on the tag "soft biopunk" on my blog) there are kemonomimi people all around, and in fact, all sort of genetic cosmetics, in fact, one of the main characters is indeed a communist catgirl. Most of it, however, is made in adults, much like getting tattoos or piercings. Tegument (i.e, skin) in humans and most vertebrates is surprisingly plastic, and one can 'grow' ears and implant them, or estimulate the production of feather or scale genes in the skin. Meanwhile, things such as tails have a little more involved surgery, since you also need to take into account nerves, muscles, circulation, etc. Meanwhile stuff such as muzzles and others require very extensive surgery, so it isn't as common. So these are implants (non inheritable) rather than expression from embryos, what geneticists would say germline modification. Such things also occurs but is done way more carefully and is more extensive, and it's nothing you would do just for the sake of cosmetics, when you're doing that, you're basically starting a new branch of humanity with all that implies. On the other hand, sentient "uplift" cats, dogs, and many other animals do exist, but they aren't animals that act like humans, they are sentient animals with a way of thinking and behavior very different to us, you aren't talking to a "cat with human intelligence", you're talking to an intelligent cat (when they want to talk, anyways). So, you can't REALLY turn a Felis catus into a catgirl, but a Homo sapiens can do a rather passable one.
Well, this has been a lot of fun to write and think about, so I hope you enjoyed it, and sorry for the walls of text! I promise to make a better post with some better illustrations of hot catgirls. In any case, if you found this useful, I would be very grateful if you gave me a tip! Given our economic situation here with Milei (the guy who cloned his dog, how appropiate), anything helps!
Feel free to ask anything you'd like!

Big post with a whole bunch of species headcanons! Not every character is here and some headcanons have more detail than others simply because I happened to have more ideas for those
First I want to say that in my headcanon, avians and bird hybrids are different things. While hybrids (in general) are a mix of different species with any combination of traits, avians are pretty uniform in what kind of bird traits they have, and in general avians are genetically more similar to each other than random birds hybrids are to each other. With that out of the way-
Grian is a parrot avian, and he has a ton of vocal stims, from whistling and singing to mimicking noises he hears.
Martyn is a parrot hybrid, and he loooves to do silly voices and mimick creeper hisses
---
Gem became an anglerfish sea monster of sorts thanks to the water in Hermitcraft. The same happened to Mumbo (catfish) and Grian (cod). And also False but I don't know what kind of fish fits her </3
Pearl is also a fish, but in a different way. She's a salmon that can shapeshift into a human (or any mix between fish and human, like a mermaid)
---
In Secret Life, Gem had the great idea to replace her eye with an eye of ender. She became some sort of end portal creature. Nobody else has ever seen anything like it and frankly, they're scared. But Gem thinks that it's standard for a universe so full of horror
---
Skizz is an angel, and angels are soulless! This is why he wasn't in Double Life, the soulbound mechanic didn't work with him.
Another angel is Zedaph, he's a sheep/angel hybrid. He has a weird half-soul thing going on but it's fine really.
Zedaph prefers not to fly long distances if he can avoid it, because long ago he hurt his wings badly and he has chronic pain now
---
Impulse is a demon, and while demons can usually fly, his wings are underdeveloped and can't get him off the ground. He uses elytra instead.
Scar is another winged elytra user. He's a vex and vexes can fly, but it's painful for him to use his wings
---
Scar is an actual vex like like the ones evokers summon, and he uses some sort of vex magic to appear hybrid-like. His true form is a little vex guy.
Cub is a human turned vex, and his hybrid-like appearance is his true form. He can look fully human if he wants to, but not fully vex
---
Xisuma is a voidwalker. Voidwalkers are beings that form very rarely when particles and soul fragments lost to the void come together and become conscious. They're the only beings that can survive in the deepest part of the void
Voidwalkers are so rare that most of them live their whole lives without finding another living being, especially because they don't tend to leave the bottom of the void.
Because voidwalkers spend their whole lives in complete darkness, their eyes aren't super well developed. Xisuma's vision is blurry, he has visual snow, and he's very sensitive to light. His helmet actually filters out a lot of light so it doesn't give him a headache
His helmet also helps him breathe. Voidwalkers are not made for high pressure atmospheres
---
Etho is a phantom hybrid. He's allergic to cats and also the sun. He needs very little sleep. His silver hair is not a species trait, it's dyed
^that's a Hermitcraft-only headcanon. I see him as a silverfish in the Life series, for no particular reason. The silver hair is a species trait in that case
Bdubs is a glare hybrid, being scared of the dark is part of his glare instincts. The moss coat isn't part of him but I'm sure he could be mossy if he wanted to. He can probably fit inside a moss block
---
Tango is a blaze hybrid. Or a blazeborn? I imagine it's a similar situation to avians and bird hybrids but I haven't put that much thought into this one. And both blazeborn and blaze hybrid can be shortened to blaze anyways
She can't get burned, and water hurts him. Water breathing negates water damage
His flame naturally burns orange, but it can be other colors depending on what she's using as fuel. For example, the blue Dungeon Master look comes from burning soul sand
Her body temperature also depends on fuel. Normal, orange Tango freezes very easily, but blue Tango's body temperature is so high that he doesn't even feel the cold
He has tritanopia, as do all netherborns. There's only really two colors in the nether so beings from there didn't evolve the ability to see more than that
She can hover, which he uses mostly to break her fall and do big jumps
Because she can't touch water (without potions at least), he takes soul sand baths like a chinchilla. Yes, this makes him blue for a while

If it's not too much to ask... How about a Wednesday x Male!Reader where they cuddle for the first time??
Bonus points if Wednesday takes on a more dominant role in their cuddle session dhdjshdjd
I Like That Idea, and since people also want more of a Venom X Wednesday, i decided to eat two bodies with one venom.
Tumblr media
Living with this, other half was a bothersome sort. A symbiotic virus consuming all who cross Venom. What made it hard was telling Enid, well you hadn’t planned on doing that it sort of just, happened. But you had to tell Wednesday, she’s your best friend! Well you consider her your best friend. She most likely views you as a nuisance. But you had to tell her. Nearing the end of your Mythology class, you made an effort to find Wednesday and tell her the harrowing truth.
It wasn’t particularly hard to find her, lingering in the shadows of her bedroom. You knocked gently at the door and awaited a response.
“I can detect a faint heartbeat! Death lingers in the room!” Venom spoke into your mind.
“Oh, well Wednesday is definitely inside then…” you said, faintly you can hear the words “enter.” Coming from beyond the door, you take a deep breath and grip the knob and enter. Stepping into the girls dormitory was obviously a tense situation, not wanting to seem off at some creep but this was extreme circumstances. Your eyes traced along the room, first to Enids side, which was bright and bubbly as you could be, flashes of Pink, Stuffed animals, Boy Bands, your typical modern gal stuff, but hints of steak lingers in your nose, definitely the werewolf part. Your eyes head right to the dark and dreary side that is Wednesday, the lack of color, the almost sapping aura, it screamed into the voice, “take me sweet death.” You catch the desk in your vision and see the raven haired demon typing at her desk.
What Wednesday lacked, an emotions, moral alignment, sometimes a pulse, was her cold and callous genius. She had a natural beauty that requires no Make up, no flashy clothes, just pure genetic beauty, and as dreadful as she can be at her emotions she was absolutely captivating. You thought she was captivating, breathtaking, beautiful… you never knew how Wednesday felt about you, she always kept a reserved stance on her emotions and displays of affection and intimacy. While you didn’t particularly mind, it was hard to tell if she was angry or just dead on the inside sometimes.
“Wednesday.” You begin, not really sure how to begin this.
“(Y/n), You know how I feel about my writing time.. and hour—“
“Without interruption, I know.. but this is, well I need to tell you something.” You barely utter, “it’s… urgent.” She stops typing hearing this, and turns to face you. Her Crepuscular beauty always took your breath away. You take a deep breath and try to explain.
“There’s something I’ve been meaning to show you, to tell you, I just never really knew how to…” you say, the slowly intrigue of Wednesday began to show and she began to buckle under her own dreary curiosity.
“Speak then.” She replies, and you take a seat and sit on the edge of her bed. Her eyes were so, intimidating, sometimes it was hard to even get a glimpse of her.
“I never told you why I was in Nevermore, or what I’m considered different enough to go.. it’s because I… I’m a host for my Symbiotic.” You say, Wednesdays eyes kept on your face, as if she’s scanning for any lies or forms of deception.
“You see annoyingly normal for my standard.” She says, “What is this “Symbiotic?” She asks, you slowly rose up and closed your eyes, Wednesday watches as suddenly your body began to ooze a deep black, sludge like liquid from parts of his body, slowly encapsulating his entire body, Wednesdays face went from unamused to pleasantly stunned. What stood before her now was a hulking mass of darkness, some dreary parasite. The head of the monster opens up, revealing Your veiny, corroded face.
“Is this too much?” You ask, Wednesday didn’t know what to say for a moment.
“What, what are you? Are you even human?” She asks, you slowly transform back.
“Obviously, I just have this, thing.”
“I am not a thing!”
“Who unfortunately has a mind of its own.” You say.
“… who else knows about this?” She asks you, and you awkwardly fiddle around.
“Principal Weems… and. Enid.” You say, which makes Wednesday scowl.
“You told Enid before me?” She says accusingly.
“No! He told her before I could.” You say, suddenly your hand darkens, lifts itself up, as it transforms into the face of Venom.
“I wanted to eat her! I had no intention to revel ourselves!” He yells, Wednesday looks at the hand, a mix of disgust and, amusement.
“So you were not lying, it is alive.”
“Yes I am pretty one! I bet your liver tastes exquisite!”
“Ignore that comment, he says that to everyone.” You shake your hand, letting him lose control and going back to normal. You sigh and clasp your hands together sadly.
“I.. I apologize for not telling you…” you say, “there’s no easy way to ease a woman into telling them that I have a cannibalistic parasite living inside me.” You explain.
“Do not fret, I expected to say you listed to country music, that would have been a real horror.”
“.. have I ever told you how amazing you are.” You say trying not to laugh at that, Wednesday calmly, and somewhat reluctantly sat next to you. Being a bit stuff, she was never this close to another person let alone a man not related to her.
“I have no right to judge what information you disclose… but I do appreciate you telling me. Now if I have a body to dispose of, I’ll know who to bring it to.” She said.
“I like her!” Venom yells.
“Me too..” you say under your breath, Wednesday took the leap, doing something so, daring. You felt a cold clasp on the top of your hand, Wednesday placed her hand on top of yours. You didn’t know what to say, you looked at Wednesday who kept looking forward, you could make out just the slightest hint of red under her cheeks. You didn’t hesitate, letting the symbiote slowly take over her hand, this actually brought Wednesday comfort, the cold slimy feeling of death on her cold unfeeling hand. A perfect combination, she decided to take one last risk, gently placing her head on your shoulder, it was again stiff and cold. A symbiotic arm crept around her body into a soft hug. It was a perfect serene moment, a parasitic, symbiotic, love.
“… I still despise the fact you told Enid first.”
“I doubt she would have said anything…”
“… still.”

Gatto coming with Dr Time to cause a new trauma
Tumblr media
Joking xD
I have a question ^^)/
In LU HC how do the boys deal with other Hyrule races (gorons, zoras, dekuscrubs...)? Do they have specialized personnel?
Haha what a fantastic gif 😂
Honestly, I kind of humanized the other races, they still have different aspects to them but they’re not, like, completely different races. I mainly did this just to fit with the modern/normal setting, but in retrospect it also makes my life easier for medical stuff, because I can’t be bothered to theorize all the different ways to treat appendicitis in multiple species 😂😅
I had a post a million years ago that kind of talked about the other races, but I have not had any luck finding it so I’ll just cover some things.
Zora are typically paler than Hylians, and their hair color is extremely different, matching canon Zora color schemes. They also typically have some facial markings. And they have a larger lung capacity. Their people live by the water. For example, Mipha is quite pale, has coral red hair and amber eyes, and has some dots in her cheeks that match her hair. She’s a little diminutive in build compared to a Hylian woman her age. Many Zora tend to be a little taller than Hylians, though. Oh, and their nails grow out sharp like claws.
Gorons and Gerudo are both buff, typically very tan to chocolate skinned. Gorons are shorter and stockier, with white hair and black eyes. Their population is overwhelmingly male. Gerudo are very tall, basically look very similar to their canon counterparts (except their proportions are NORMAL. Their hips drive me insane, like they look ridiculous. Or overwhelmingly underweight.), and their population is overwhelmingly female. But there are male Gerudos and female Gorons.
Deku scrubs, Kokiri, etc are all very rare people to find and typically are never seen in Castle Town. Time is quite familiar with them, though.
Rito hail from the mountains. They have exceptional vision and traditionally wear their hair in braids. Hair color varies - men usually have brighter colored hair than women, and their eyes can do that fun little pinning that some birds can do when they’re excited. Their culture is very bird oriented - Sky and Sun hail from their region (they’re not Rito genetically, but they’re basically Rito culturally)
As for the medical side, they’re generally the same on the inside. Some groups are predisposed to certain problems more so than others (real life example, people with African descent are more likely to get sickle cell disease than those with European descent), and there might be certain doses of meds or kinds of meds that vary (real life example, it takes way more anesthesia to knock out a redhead than other people). So no specialties to just take care of Zora vs Hylian, but probably there are those who specialize in research pertaining to one group over another.

Weird vampire physiology and society questions, interspersed with assorted random musings!
How does their dentition differ from a human’s? Are the canines just longer and sharper, or are they thicker/larger too? Are the bottom ones similarly shaped to the top ones? Do they bite (for feeding, or for combat) with just the top ones, or all four?
Do their eye colours vary, and if so, by how much? Do some vampires have more pinkish or even purple eyes? What about orange or yellow? Are their pupils round like a human’s and get larger to adjust to light (more similar to a human), or slit more like a cat’s and get rounder to adjust to light (more adapted to the dark)? Or something else? Do their pupils reflect light like a cat’s (another dark vision adaptation)?
How would the perfect healing thing change for a vampire born with a physical genetic disability? For instance, a vampire born without a limb, or blind, or with a muscular disorder. My guess is that the vampire returns to whatever “base state” is indicated by their genetics. How does that affect the vampire’s standing in society? Since vampires heal from all injury, I’m betting there’s even more ableism than there is amongst humans. Additionally, how rare is kane’s lack of persuasion? I’m sure he’s not the only one, but based on comments in the story, it seemed like having no persuasion at all was exceedingly rare.
On a similar note, do vampires have allergies, since that’s a case of one’s immune system overreacting to something? Do vampires with allergies just get extra hungry when the wrong flowers bloom because their bodies keep needing to “heal” from random environmental factors?
What are the blood types of the human characters in k&j? Are there blood types that are generally considered “tastier” in vampire society? (Of course there would be variation, after all, not every human thinks truffle mushrooms taste all that great, but we all agree that they’re more expensive and fancier.) Kane regularly mentions jim as being especially tasty, would most vampires agree with him?
Since vampires have more sensitive noses, do they (generally) like things like incense, perfume, scented candles, etc, or do they absolutely hate it? I would assume they’d want weaker scents than humans usually do, but it would also be much easier for one to notice a funky smell in a room and want to cover it up. (Also, given how many human candle scents are based on food, especially fruit and pastries, would vampires use blood as a scent?)
Feel free to answer or ignore as many of these as you want, i love your writing and find the setting fascinating and want to know more about it
dentition - longer and sharper, prob a bit thicker but not too much. bottom teeth are basically normal for a human, maybe a bit sharper canines but no added length. they bite with the top teeth for feeding.
eye colors vary very little. they have bright red eyes, and while exact shade can have slight differences, there won't be much. eyes are round like a human's and reflect light like a cat's, as they possess a tapetum lucidum. (tapetum lucidum is my fave part of the eye, i dissected a cow eyeball in biopsych class and cows have em too, they look super weird up close and out of the eye! i would... like to dissect a vampire eyeball...)
idk the blood types of my human characters... i actually may have mentioned it before but forgot... blood type won't really be too much of a determining factor at large, though certain humans or blood types might be tastier to individual vampires, but tastes vary greatly so there's no consensus. most of kane's family (ex. anton) would agree abt jim being especially tasty, but not all vampires.
liking fragrances or not would vary from vampire to vampire. weaker scents are indeed common. kane enjoys scented candles. blood is not too common a fragrance (though it does exist), and human food smells gross to vampires so it's never used. things like florals and pine and lavender and other natural non-food scents are used, as well as some things vampires can smell that humans wouldn't even be able to.

Evaluations (The Bad Batch)
A selection of evaluations of the health of CT-9904, as performed by Nala Se. Nala Se POV, Crosshair whump/medical whump, angst at a remove. ~3200 words.
---
Nala Se walks through the long white corridors to the clones’ medical bay.  Troopers march past in tight formation, each one perfectly uniform, created precisely to match their original specifications.  Behind them small cadets trail their older mirrors in imitation, small brown faces all alike, dark hair in the same short military style.  She has only to glance at them all to see her own flawless work marching beside her.
She allows herself a small, secret smile.  There have been some clones with flaws, of course.  Adjustments to obedience, size, intelligence. ability.  She is most curious to see how the clones of the 99 designation fare as they age.
Her work, she suspects, is not unlike that of the artist or musician.  Like them there is an idea she carries in her mind, the delicate dance of DNA and genetic modification, a vision she has planned and put into motion through the work of her own hands and her own vision.  Now there is only the waiting to see the finished product that remains.  She knows what she expects of her enhanced clones one day.  Yet she also anticipates there may be surprises to occur in their development, unexpected interplays of inspiration or epigenetic accidents leading to something greater than the sum of their parts.  It is a pleasant source of anticipation in her day to day, to see the finished music that her work might make.
She reaches the medical bay and the doors slide open for her.  She is mildly taken aback at the scene of disarray that appears.  A clone cadet, bio-equivalent to a seven-year-old human, sits hunched over himself on the floor, surrounded by scattered medical equipment that appears to have been thrown or kicked around the room.  AZI-3 hovers a safe distance away from the clone, and seems relieved to see her.
“Doctor Se,” he says, pitching his voice modulators to a quiet scale.  “You have asked me to inform you of any medical visits regarding clones of the ninety-nine designation.  This is CT-9904, and he is here with a minor injury, but he is proving… difficult.”
Nala Se nods.  CT-9904 would be identifiable from across any room nearly instantly; with his modifications, it is obvious. The clone’s proportions are unusual, thinner and taller than would be expected at this stage of development, and streaks of gray pepper his dark hair despite his young biological age.  She had expected that variation.  On many species her work has shown an inextricable link between hair color and visual development, and humans are no different.
“CT-9904,” she murmurs.  “Please explain yourself.”
The clone unfolds himself and gets awkwardly to his feet, bowing his head briefly to her before looking down at his boots.  The injuries are apparent, a blue-black bruise swelling his right eye shut, scrapes up and down his rather thin, angular face.  He sniffs, rubbing the back of his hand against his nose.  It comes back bloody.
“There was a fight,” the boy says slowly.  His voice is odd, slightly raspy, with an accent to his Basic that deviates from the norm.  That variation had not been anticipated.  One of her intriguing surprises.
She waits, giving him an expectant look.  He takes a deep breath.
“The other clones didn’t like that I’m different.”  His fists clench at his sides.  “I beat all of their scores in marksmanship.  It’s so easy.  They got mad… they started it. I tried to finish it, but there were more of them than me.”  He crosses his arms over his chest, scowling, then wincing.
“Fights are not uncommon at this stage of training,” Nala Se murmurs. “The tendency is typically outgrown.”  Though there is the matter that with his enhanced visual acuity, CT-9904 has been training in marksmanship with clones four cycles older.  Perhaps seeing a clone so much earlier in his development excel has triggered the aggressive response from the standard units.  She turns to AZI-3.  “What is the prognosis?”
“There is a hairline fracture of the right zygomatic arch, but with the rapid growth rate and the improved healing capabilities, this is not expected to have any negative long-term effects.  Which I have tried explaining to him!”
“I don’t believe you!” the boy bursts out.  Nala Se tilts her head to one side, studying him.
“Why?”
The boy looks furtive, anxious, fidgeting where he stands.  His hands twist together.  At last he stammers, “I can’t see!”  He tries to open the swollen right eye and fails, hissing with the effort.
“I have informed him that this is temporary,” says AZI-3.  He addresses the clone directly.  “The swelling needs time to come down, and then you will see normally again.  All of the scans indicate that your eye itself was not damaged, only the tissue surrounding it.  You should be back to normal within ten rotations.”
“Are you sure?  But that’s -- it’s all I -- I have to --”  His face is flushed.  “It’s what I’m for!”
“Your vision will return in time, CT-9904.  Your enhancements remain intact.  The droid tells the truth,” says Nala Se.  “There are other skills you may continue training in during this time.  I will see to it that you are assigned extra training in stealth and hand-to-hand combat as you heal.”
The clone gives her a worried look, then nods, letting out a long breath.
“Please help AZI-3 clean up this mess.  After that, you should return to your quarters.  Your fellow cadets should be returning from their own training soon.”
The clone laughs slightly, a small smile shifting on his face.  “Wrecker’s going to be mad he missed the fight.  He could have taken them all out.  I know it.”
“Hmm.”  She sighs.  This is not the first time these particular clones have been at the center of discord among the standard cadets, and she has a strong suspicion it will not be the last.  Yet another unique trait in a batch full of them.  She wonders which one of them will be in here next.
---
CT-9904 is led into the medical bay by red-painted clone troopers, stripped of his armor and walking with his head down.  Nala Se is waiting.  She has been curious to assess the effects of the inhibitor chip on her modified clones; the chips themselves had not been modified or calibrated for the minds of this particular batch, and she had long wondered if she would ever see the effects on them were the chips to be activated.  Here then is her opportunity to learn, though her curiosity feels subdued from what she had anticipated.  Perhaps it is merely that she feels disquieted by the presence of Admiral Tarkin in the chamber beyond.
My work does not need your supervision, Admiral, she thinks, then turns to the clone at hand.
CT-9904 has only rarely needed medical assistance after completing his training; as his squad’s long-range sniper, he has typically avoided the types of injuries accrued by the others.  It has been multiple cycles since she has last seen him up close, and he sits obediently on the examination table under armed guard, his eyes shadowed, his face grim.
“How do you feel, CT-9904?” she asks.
“I don’t know why I’m here,” he bites out, looking away.  “There’s nothing wrong with me.  Perhaps you should look at Hunter.  He’s been acting irrationally.”
“He will be examined in time,” she assures him.  “There are some questions I am going to ask you.”
He shrugs, sighing.  “All right.”
“Have you had any episodes of seizures?”
He sits up straight, looking at her suspiciously, a wary surprise in his eyes.  “No.”
“Have you experienced any episodes of fainting?”
“No.”
“Have you experienced any disorientation?”
“No.”
“Have you experienced any headaches?”
A short, sharp intake of breath.  His eyes focus beyond her, fixating in the direction of the Admiral, and a guilty look crosses his face.  “...yes.”
“Thank you, CT-9904.  The examination will begin.”
One of her new medical droids hovers forward, extending a long hypodermic.  The clone’s eyes widen.  “Is that necessary?”
“Yes, it is.”  The droid injects him in the shoulder.  He grimaces, but then his expression slides into something dreamy, a placid, half-lidded stare.  He slumps where he sits and the droid eases him onto his back, preparing him for imaging.  Nala Se recuses herself to the outer chamber.
She has read CT-9904’s report of Kaller, contradicting the reports from his squadmates.  They have informed her of his attempts to convince his squad to follow orders.  It is a fascinating finding.  CT-9904’s chip may be working -- she will run the necessary tests to confirm, but the headaches are the earliest stage of an incomplete chip activation -- yet loyalty to his squad appears to be superseding its commands.
Admiral Tarkin waits for her as the test commences.  As she has suspected, the chip is partially working, but CT-9904’s mutations have muted its effectiveness.  She transmits the order to amplify the chip’s effects as the Admiral looks on.
The amplification process is one that she has never used before in practice, though it was developed for theoretical use in an event such as this one.  As she watches it becomes plain that the dose of sedative has been insufficient for such a procedure.  CT-9904 trembles, hands curling beside him, his chest rising and falling jerkily.  She assesses his vitals.  They are stable enough, but the elevated heart rate and erratic breathing are consistent with pain.
She considers adding further sedation, but the process is nearly complete, and she refrains.
The arms of the machine retract.  She checks her datapad.  The clone’s vitals have returned to normal, and he is starting to stir.
“Did it work?” Admiral Tarkin asks, voice clipped with impatience.  “If not, you may begin the decommissioning process.  But if it has worked, I would like the same procedure performed on the remaining squad.”
“Understood, Admiral.  I will assess him myself.”
By the time she enters, CT-9904 is clumsily sitting up, breathing hard.  He raises one hand to his right temple, shaking his head.  “What happened?” he asks.
“You have been found clear to return to duty.  With your squad.”
CT-9904 frowns, his face going cold.  “My squad disobeyed orders.”  He gets off the table, swaying slightly, and straightens up.  “Good soldiers follow orders.”
“And if your squad does not?”
“Then they need to be eliminated,” CT-9904 says evenly.  His eyes are blank, devoid of the suspicion and wariness that had been plain earlier.  She nods, feeling a slight pang.  She would have preferred to have had the time to study the interplay between the clone’s mind and the partially activated chip in case there were new insights to be gleaned.  Observing him for several weeks would have been most intriguing.  But she is certain now that in this regard, at least, CT-9904 is no longer unique.
---
“Status report,” Nala Se asks, gazing down at the unconscious clone in recovery.
The medical droid catalogs the clone’s injuries while removing the field bandages marred by strikethrough.  The list is long and troubling.  Ion burns to the chest, hands and face.  Concussion to the right temple.  Corneal abrasions.  Right shoulder dislocation, replaced in the field.  Inhalation injury.  It is disheartening to see such a unique specimen in such shape.  The corneal abrasions are the most concerning, given the nature of his enhancements, but the droid’s readings confirm that they are thankfully superficial and should heal without issue.
“How did this occur?”
“Exposure to an ion engine, Doctor,” says a human woman with a clipped, stern voice, her helmet carried under her arm.  “We were shocked he survived.  None of the other clones with him made it.”  Nala Se gives her a cool look.  One of Admiral Tarkin’s conscripts, her training nonstandardized, her breeding unknown.  She does not understand the Admiral’s obsession with ‘updating’ the army of the Republic, no, Empire, and it is an affront to have one of those inferior soldiers here in her own medical bay.
The soldier is still standing at attention.  “Will the Commander be all right?” she asks, and there is something calculating in her eyes. Nala Se frowns.  Clones would never show such hints of naked ambition.
“Yes.  There is extensive treatment to be done, but he will likely be fully rehabilitated within a matter of weeks.”  They have repaired far more grievous injuries to their clones over the years.  Kaminoan work was strong, and it was reparable when desired.  “CT-9904 is valuable to the Empire, and he will recover.”
The soldier frowns.  “Even with the seizures?”
Nala Se gives her her full attention.  “He has had seizures?”
“Two, on the journey back from Bracca,” she says.  “I thought the medic told you.  Is that from the head injury?”
“There will be no further questions,” Nala Se says.  “You may leave.”
The woman shoves her helmet back on, nodding, and finally leaves.  Nala Se immediately locks the laboratory door behind her.
There is a faint groan from the bed.  CT-9904 raises his left hand weakly before it drops back against his chest.  He coughs, the sound amplified in the oxygen mask looped over his face.
She casts her eyes over the blistered flesh above his right ear, then directs the medical droids to set up the imaging device to assess the chip.  CT-9904’s breathing rattles in the confines of the imaging chamber.  It is disconcerting.
The machine whirs, its testing cycle complete, and it retracts to leave CT-9904 back in the open.  She frowns at the results on her datapad.
“The inhibitor chip is damaged,” she tells the medical droid at the clone’s side.  “Swelling in the brain has interfered with its functioning.  The seizures are the result of an improper connection.”
CT-9904 fumbles at the oxygen mask on his face, making a garbled noise.  He manages to pull off the mask, and rasps, “Take it out, then.”
Nala Se stiffens.
She has made a mistake.
She has never spoken of the chips in the presence of a clone beyond Omega.  Now in her curiosity, with CT-9904 so wounded as to appear unconscious, she has erred.  She turns to him, wondering how she should proceed.  Despite what she had said about CT-9904’s value to the Empire, she is certain there would be no repercussions if he were to not survive his injuries.
“What do you mean?”
“I know…” He swallows, coughing, flecks of blood-tinged fluid dotting his lips.  “I know about the chip.  They told me.”
“Who?”
“Clone Force 99,” he manages.  “Said it’s… controlling me.  But I don’t --”  He presses the oxygen mask against his face again, taking in several deep breaths before removing it again.  He squints up at her through blepharospasm, eyelids struggling to open despite the pain of the abrasions.  “I don’t need a chip to be loyal.  To --”  His chest heaves.  “To be a good soldier.”
CT-9904 suddenly stares off into space, his good eye transfixing on the ceiling.  His jaw slackens, and she recognizes the prodromal signs of an impending seizure.  Nala Se gives a swift look to the medical droid.  “He will need an anticonvulsive.  Immediately.”  The droid complies, heading off the seizure before it can truly begin.
Nala Se hesitates.  There are three paths remaining to her now.  Euthanasia of the enhanced clone to prevent possible awareness of the chip from being spread to other clones; treating the injuries but leaving the clone in his current state, potentially compromised by seizures and prone to worsening degradation of the chip; or --
She makes her choice, recalling the clone’s words.  CT-9904 and his cohort have always represented a new era in experimentation for her.  Perhaps by removing his chip now, she may continue to be surprised.
---
The walls of Tantiss press in around her, a windowless narrow world of her cell and the hallway beyond.  Tipoca City lies beneath the waves of her homeworld, her lab, her work, her calling buried in the sea; and now there is only the Empire and its brutal destruction.
She has been a fool.  She had so buried herself in her work that she had blinded herself to the dangers of being indispensable.  She knows that she will never leave this planet alive.
The days are endless, the monotony almost worse than the clumsy efforts of the Empire to extract the information they needed by force.  Their interrogation droids had been programmed for human physiology, and while unpleasant, their methods had failed to force her to share her scientific knowledge.  They have since given up on that, and now Hemlock attempts to use the clone Omega as a bargaining chip, despite having no idea of her whereabouts.
Nala Se cares little for his efforts.  She cares little for anything at all, now.
The one slight bit of interest in her day is her daily walk.  They bring her to the lab once daily under heavy guard and supervision, perhaps hoping she will be enticed by the technology to resume her old work.  She has no interest in the lab, refusing to examine its machines and capabilities, but she watches closely the clones walking by under their own guard, amusing herself with guessing which batches they had arisen from.  She has no way to confirm her guesses, but to her trained eye, subtle changes in the degree of aging -- the appearance of fine wrinkles starting at the edges of the eyes and corners of the mouth, a slight shift in glossiness of the hair, faint alterations to the gait -- provide significant clues.  It puts her in mind of happier times, when she could truly focus on science and take pride in the results of her labors.
One day -- or perhaps night, there is no way to tell -- she awaits the lift with her captors and a group of clones stops beside them, waiting for the same lift.  She turns to study them and is taken aback.  One clone stands above the others, several inches taller despite the slump in his shoulders.
Her mind swirls with questions.  Had the removal of CT-9904’s chip -- omitted from his final medical report after his injuries on Bracca -- come to light?  Was he sent here for betrayal of the Empire?  Or had he merely been injured and deemed unfit to return to duty, so was sent here for study to remain useful?
He does not meet her gaze.  She is not sure he has even noticed she stands beside him.  His face is skull-like, his skin sallow from lack of sunlight, deep shadows etched beneath his eyes.  A flicker of movement catches her eye and she notes a fine tremor, nearly imperceptible, along the edge of his hand.  He shakes his hand almost subconsciously, a small, subtle jerk she is not sure that even he has detected.  There are no obvious injuries, but there is an emptiness that is apparent, a lack of something vital.
She does not know what has brought him here, but she knows that he is a soldier no longer.
The lift arrives and the guards herd them within.  Force is not required; the prisoners know their place.  They stare down at the floor, heads bowed.
Nala Se gazes away from the ruined clone beside her.  The music she had once carried in her head, the clever dance of DNA and ingenuity, the spark of creativity, of creation, falls silent.  She does not speak to him, nor he to her.
There is simply nothing to say.

Flying foxes
Tumblr media
Basics
Bats make up the taxonomic order Chiroptera. They are traditionally categorized into two groups. There are small micro bats (Microchiroptera) and MUCH larger mega bats (Megachiroptera). Only Micro bats have the ability to use echolocation! Mega bats do not, they actually rely on eyesight and smell to navigate!
Flying foxes or more formally Pteropus is a Genus of megabats which are some of the largest bats in the world! They are often referred to as “fruit bats” or “flying foxes.” I will be referring to them as flying foxes. They can reach a wing span of 5 feet. There are currently 60 extant(living) species of flying foxes! They inhabit, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Australia, East Africa and some islands in the Pacific and Indian Ocean. Most flying foxes are nocturnal. Unlike the majority of other bats, flying foxes don’t rely on echolocation to find food! They rely on their keen sense of sight and smell. They fly 9 to 40 miles every night to hunt. When feeding they spit out seeds, enabling plant growth!
Eye sight
As I previously mentioned, flying foxes cant echolocate so they rely on their sense of smell and their sight to hunt! They have really cool eye features/adaptations that enables them to see so well at night! (even better than us!)
Eyesight 101
Every animal has 2 types of cells in their eyes that allow them to see. We have rods, which help us see in low light and detect fast moving objects. They are concentrated in the outer areas of the retina and give us peripheral vision. Rods are 500 to 1,000 times more sensitive to light than cones. The second cells are cones, which allow us to tell the difference between colors and see more detail. There are 3 different cones, which allow us to see red, green, and blue wavelengths of visible light. Since we have all 3 they allow us to see the full color spectrum ( trichromatic vision ).
(Back to flying foxes) Flying foxes don’t have the type of cone to see red wavelengths. This also happens to humans! It’s the same condition that causes us to become red-green colorblind. Everything will appear in a blue or yellow tone. Flying foxes have around 10 times less cones than people, therefore they see less colors. To make up for the lack of cones, they’ve adapted even more rods. This gives flying foxes better low-light vision than people. It allows them to navigate very well at night by using roads, rivers and streetlights.
Chiropterophily
Chiropterophily is the pollination of plants and flowers by bats. More than 500 species of tropical plants are pollinated by nectar+pollen eating bats. There is evidence that trees in the Myrtacaea family have co-evolved with nocturnal foragers and use them to keep genetic diversity over wide ranges. These trees flower and produce nectar at night, and they have bright colored blooms that are easy for flying foxes to locate. Without flying foxes, it would be harder for these trees to maintain genetic diversity over long distances.
Habitat
Flying foxes live in tropical forests, wetlands and swamps. They need to live in large trees as their colonies consist of hundreds to thousands of bats! They live in paperback forests, eucalypt forests, and rainforests.
Diet
Flying foxes are herbivores and frugivores. They thrive off a diverse diet consisting mostly of fruits, leaves, pollen, and nectar. They prefer tropical fruits like bananas, mangoes as well as berries and figs. Flying foxes also consume leaves from a variety of trees and shrubs, and collect pollen from flowers. By feeding on these resources flying foxes aide in the pollination and seed dispersal in their ecosystems. This makes them a keystone species!
Here’s a source that can give you more insight on their eyesight: https://sydneybats.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Flying-foxes_are_very_visible_visual_bats_M_Graydon.pdf
That’s all, I hope you learned something new!!

Note
if Polaris ends up having his own unique genetic mutation that can be passed down, do you think you'll end up breeding for it on purpose? (assumng it doesn't come with health issues)
Yes and no- "doesn't come with health issues" would require observing Polaris for his entire lifespan before breeding him which is, for obvious reasons, impossible.
The first bronze bird with vitiligo (at the time, called "progressive pied") didn't have health problems as a young bird, and the people who had a say over breeding the bird didn't realize it was an autoimmune condition (despite that. I told them. but I was "new" and The Old Keepers don't listen to New People even though half of them have no idea what the fuck they're talking about when it comes to the science side of genetics/breeding but. I digress). By the time he started having health issues and losing vision, the condition had already been spread to the point that people now have to be careful purchasing bronze birds, because purposeful efforts were made to breed for "progressive pied," which spread it throughout the bronze lines in a lot of places. This also means lines which include bronze (hazel, indigo, platinum, and by proxy purple and opal since those are the other colors in those double colors) are at risk of developing vitiligo.
Now, I have Eclipse (Polaris' likely mother) and my friends in NC have Orion, Major, and had Minor (who passed away from an unrelated infection last fall), and none of them are ill at all, nor showing any sign of degeneration in functionality (like eyesight), nor are Orion's pied markings increasing significantly (all "pied" birds can have slightly different white per year due to feathers being colored by slightly different pigment cells from year to year, but the white shouldn't spread/increase significantly). So that's good.
I'll be watching Polaris' sons as long as I have them (and for the record, he produced them before I noticed this difference in his feathers, because he still had a 2yo train and feathers, it's only after this fall molt that the weird ones started growing in), and Polaris himself. Since he's a blackshoulder, his pattern is going to change significantly until he's around 6 years old. This is normal for BS; typically the marble pattern on their feathers solidifies into solid colors. You can see the marble pattern on the top edge of this feather, and the solid color on the bottom.
Tumblr media
That solid color should spread upward and take over the whole feather by 6 years old. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. It's considered a pattern flaw for it to not finish transferring. Indie's BS markings went all the way up his shoulder to his body, the way it's supposed to do, which is a good quality.
I don't know if Polaris' marble will disappear entirely, since his father wasn't BS, just split. I don't know if his variegation will take over instead, or split the feathers or what. I don't know if the variegation will disappear by the time he's 6, which would mean it's probably just an aberrant BS pattern. If it stays, it could still just be an aberration of the white eye gene. But, silver pied came out of an aberrant WE gene.
So... I don't know. I will have to weigh the risks depending on how he develops over the next three years. If I think it's an aberration on a safe gene like BS or WE or a combo or something, then I may see if it will transfer on purpose. It would be really cool to found a new gene, but it would be REALLY UNCOOL to start a fresh health problem. Either way, I'm going to document it carefully.

So a thought I've been having for a few weeks now of kryptonians and mild colour blindness. Like, if they lived under a red sun, and predominantly lived there, they probably had *some* colour blindness, right?? I mean, i guess they couldve been genetically engineered for that to like. Not happen but then I'd be petitioning for them to have a wayyy wilder sense of sight and perception of colours. Anyway it also led to mild colourblind kara thoughts and her arguing with everyone about it djdjdkf
rip you just opened one of my special interest barrels and im supposed to be working LMAO
Ok honestly I've wondered about that too bc if Krypton is a red sun planet and they supposedly had flora and fauna before the war that inevitably collapsed the planet, it would be adapted to that darker "sweet spot" for life to grow. Like would the plants be darker (blacks, deep greens, purples, reds?) and would the animals and kryptonians have altered vision and metabolism to make up for the lack of light? Like would we be seeing more bioluminescence (let kara glow in the dark, it would be funny)? Would they have better low light vision and even dark vision? Would they have heightened hearing or even echolocation?
It is canon that kryptonians started growing clones of themselves to use as basically free extra parts to extend their lives during the golden age (i may be getting a few details wrong here, it's been a minute since i looked at my notes and stuff) (The reason the civil war began is bc anti-clone kryptonians wanted to prove that those bodies were real people (and they did! bodily and mental autonomy for the win!).). SO it is very plausible that there was more genetic engineering to benefit their race and their existence on this red sun planet since most of the population was using this technology as opposed to natural birth. That would make a more interesting take on Kara's senses and powers on a yellow sun planet since she was supposedly conceived in one of these tubes (kal/clark was the first kryptonian in generations to be created (lol) the "old" way bc he had the luck of his parents loving each other and not solely together for political purposes via the matricomp).
Also it would just lead to some really cool ways to play with her powers, give a different way to play with her heat vision and x-ray vision (even her hearing), and kick off a huge social media hubub when Supergirl accidentally reveals that she's weirdly color blind.

How I've missed you
Tumblr media
Wait for me.
He said, mounting his horse and tipping his hat goodbye.
I’ll be back.
He said as he rode towards sunset. Until he was nothing more than a speck in the distance.
You’ll wait for him, but the question is how long? A month? A year? A decade? D was, after all, immortal, absolute. The time for him flows differently for you. One human lifespan is nothing but a blink of an eye for him.
You’ve never stayed in one place this long. You’re a nomad, drifting from one corner of Frontier to another. It made your feet twitch, aching to be on the road once more. But you couldn’t. How else he’ll find you? If he’d even look for you. You shook your head to shake off that thought. You can’t let them slink their way into your heart. D would never abandon you, ha made a promise and he keeps his promises.
Your deprecating musing was interrupted when you reached the door from your caravan. You ran your fingers over the cracked paint before reaching for the doorknob. A small, but cozy interior of your lodgings greeted you. Old, patterned scarf pinned over one wall, a small tin stove, a bunk in the far end, candles, and colorful trinkets hanging everywhere. It wasn’t much but you loved this place. The wheels attached to your home gave you the feeling that you can leave wherever you can and whenever you want.
You settled a bag with a piece of bread and cheese you’d managed to purchase for that little coin you had. When you heard squeaking followed by scratching of small claws over the worn wooden floor. Slicing off a bit of cheese, you crooned at the small thing creeping its way toward you.
You found Lettie when They were digging through your garbage in the middle of the night. You started leaving them with leftovers. One day you came home and found them lying at the foot of your bed, waiting for you. You have a pet now, you guess… Even though you have no idea what Lettie is, or even its gender. Just another creation of genetic tinkering done by Nobles.
“He’s gonna love you, I’m sure.” You told the creature as you ran your fingers over the sleek fur. It doesn’t respond, of course, but no matter. Just like with D, you don’t always need him to add to your conversations. You can do all the talking by yourself.
Slipping your hands under Lettie’s belly, you lifted them and carried them to your bunk. You flopped onto the bed and held Lettie close to your chest, before lifting them above your head. The animal's glossy eyes stared dispassionately at you.
“Look at you, getting all mopey.” Your voice took a high-pitched quality to resemble Lettie’s squeaks and, as you enunciate the words, you bounce the creature as if it’s talking to you.
“What do you know! I’m allowed to miss him every once in a while!”
“What would D say if he knew you were so anxious for his return?”
“Hush, I know he comes back.” You settled Lettie back on your chest, the animal was finally allowed to rest.
After a beat of silence, you whispered, “He always came back.”
You were woken up by a loud banging on the caravan’s door. You slogged towards the door whilst trying to blink away the blurriness in your vision. A distressed face of one of the villagers greeted you. It was the old man Johnson, he owned a farm on the outskirts of the town.
“Thank Krist! I thought you were never gonna answer!” The man spitted at you, face ruddy and eyes bulging.
“It better be good Jonny.” You grumbled passively at him.
“Harpies!” The man choked out. “A whole swarm of them!! They’re tearing apart my stock. I was…ah…
The farmer didn’t get the chance to finish the sentence as you walked out of the door with a golden blade in your hand. Johnson stumbled after you, eyes trained on the blade. Where in the seven hell did gypsy like you get their hands on such a weapon?? It was engraved with strange symbols with the dragon's head at the base of the blade, blood-red ruby eyes piercing into him.
You arrived at the ranch at the exact moment when one harpy clutched a frightened sheep in its claws. Just as the night perpetrator lifts the poor animal into the sky, a soft swoosh of a blade sings through the air. The harpy falls down with a blood-curdling screech, which alerts other harpies. They leave the flock and train their beady eyes on you. With a steadying exhale, you readjust your stance and point the sword in their direction, the golden blade gleaming in the moonlight.
The harpies all dive onto you in unison. However, their talons only grab air as you propel yourself upwards, your upper body twisting clockwise to reach as far as possible with your sword. Some harpies dodge, others drop on grass like swatted flies. Johnson was so taken by the sight in front of him that he hadn’t realized he remained alone on the pasture. Nor did he notice a dark figure approaching him slowly but steadily, broad shoulders draped in a dark cloak casting a long shadow over him.
You were running out of stamina and you knew it. Your movements were slower, your senses grew more sluggish. You cried out in pain as one of Harpie’s talons dug into your shoulder whilst the other aimed for your neck. Luckily, you managed to lodge the blade between the two of you. A bead of sweat ran down your neck as you felt the strength leaving your arms, beasts maw moving closer and closer to you.
The beast has never learned your taste, for its head has been severed from its body before it could notice. Same for the other harpy, which finally made the imminent danger disappear, at least for today. You grunted as the sharp claws slipped out of the fresh wound and swayed on your legs dangerously. It took you several minutes of labored breathing and cursing before you registered the presence of another in front of you.
When you looked up, you almost fell down on your knees for good. There, illuminated by the moon, was D. Serene and unmoving as ever. Spine straight while his sword rested in his relaxed grip, still stained with harpies blood. You stared at him for a good minute or two, before wobbly walking towards him. That walk became, a somewhat sloppy run, and with the remaining strength, you propelled yourself forward and jumped into the hunter's arms. D simply extended his arms towards you, knowing better than to try and fight your theatrics. The impact from your bodies colliding made an ‘ooff’ puff out of your throat, but you haven’t released your clutch on him. After a moment of silence, you spent feverishly clutching onto him with fingers tangled in his hair, you untangle yourself from him far enough to be able to look at his face. You immediately took it into your hands and started examining the dhampir closely, making sure there wasn’t a single scratch on him.
Once you were satisfied with the results the dhampir was left open to your affections. You kissed his cheeks, his nose, his eyelids. Inch by inch you peppered his face with kisses while he held you hugged tightly to him. D’s lips twisted as he tried to fight a smile tugging at his mouth. He couldn’t fight the quiet giggle that slipped from them.
And the farmer could only stand there and gape in awe. Out of all the things he saw tonight, A dhampir being smothered with affection with the softest of smiles would be the most unbelievable of them all.
