Bramante’s Nymphaeum in Genazzano
International Competition 2023
Klaus E. Krauss, Berlin
in cooperation with Rolf Kursawe, Köln
In the countryside of Rome, hidden in a forest outside a small village, there is a forgotten renaissance pavilion. It’s the Bramante’s Nymphaeum, designed by the famous Italian architect Donato Bramante, built at the beginning of the fifteenth century by the Colonna family in Genazzano. It was the main element of a huge garden, with some lakes and a small river, located on the hillside next to the main door of the town. It was abandoned right after its completion.
Our design takes up this idea again and generates a "Teatro dell'Arte - theater, dance, music and fashion, but also exhibitions, installations, festivals and productions of all kinds. The basic idea of the design is to constructively complement the picturesque ruin in such a way that it supports the new building growing upwards and enables the interlocking of the different areas there; the new building becomes both the entrance area and the new address on Via P. P. Pasolini. The octagon as the original building is given new meaning by the installation of the staircase above the water basin, which connects the old and new levels.

In 1467, with the death of the Albanian prince Scanderbeg, there remained no one capable of curbing the advance of enemy hordes which devastated Catholic Albania. It is said that upon learning of his death, Sultan Mehmed II exclaimed: “Finally, Europe and Asia are mine. Disaster has struck Christianity! She has lost her sword and her shield!” Albania gradually succumbed, and all those who desired to remain steadfast in the Faith were obliged to choose between fleeing the country or dying in the confrontation with the invading forces.
“But—alas!—it had to be admitted that devotion […] had grown cold. Schism worked its blighting way in Albania. The morals of the people decayed with the purity of their religion. Devotion to Our Lady languished even in Scutari itself. The Turkish invasion, a clear punishment sent from Heaven, could not call the mass of the population to repentance. As a writer on the subject feelingly complains, ‘the young men and maidens no longer delighted to place flowers on the altar of Mary of Scutari; and therefore, their punishment could not be far distant.’”
In this desolate situation, two Albanian soldiers were praying before Our Lady of Scutari when the fresco detached itself from the wall and commenced a miraculous voyage, heading toward the Adriatic Sea. Gripped with holy enthusiasm, the two followed her, first on solid ground, and then striking out to sea, walking on the water!
In this way, without losing sight of the venerated image, they reached the Italian Peninsula. But when they came to the outskirts of Rome, they were plunged into perplexity when their beloved Mother disappeared from sight… Where had she gone? While they searched for Our Lady of Scutari in the Eternal City, the miraculous fresco continued on to Genazzano…
What joy Petruccia must have felt as she witnessed the miraculous arrival of the fresco of Mary in Genazzano, coming to rest alongside one of the church’s walls. She joyfully repeated the phrase of the Apostle: “Hope does not disappoint” (Rom 5:5)! We say alongside, for the fresco did not attach itself to the wall, but remained suspended in the air, above the ground, without being fastened from behind, as the historian Raffaele Buonanno confirms: “All these marvels are ultimately summed up in the continuous prodigy that, until today, the image remains in the same place and manner as when it was left there by the cloud on the day of its appearance, in the presence of all the people, whose joy it was to see it for the first time. The fresco hovered not a great height from the ground, at approximately a finger’s width from the new and rustic wall of the chapel of St. Blaise, and there it remained, suspended without any support.”

On the Feast of St. Mark, 25 April 1467, at the close of a festival in Genazzano, Italy, a cloud descended upon an ancient 5th-century deteriorated church, dedicated to Our Lady of Good Counsel.
When the cloud disappeared, the festive crowd found a small, fragile image of the Blessed Virgin and Child on a thin sheet of plaster.
The painting is said to have hung in mid-air, suspended without support, floating on a small ledge.
This particular fresco is said to date to the time of the Apostles. It had long been venerated in Albania’s capital city, Scutari.
Much of the church of Our Lady of Good Counsel was destroyed in World War II, but the image remained intact and in place.
The miraculous image is still there today after more than 500 years.
Countless miracles have been attributed to the prayerful intercession of Our Lady of Good Counsel.
Many pilgrims visit the church in Genazzano and take part in the annual spring celebration, which is observed on April 25. Elsewhere in the world, the feast is celebrated on April 26.

THE DESCRIPTION OF OUR LADY OF GOOD COUNSEL Feast Day: April 26
Mary, the Mother of Jesus, under the title Mother of Good Counsel has a special place of honor among the Augustinians.
A fifth-century church in Latium was named Saint Mary of Good Counsel. Pastoral care of its people was entrusted to the Augustinians in 1356.
The original painting entitled Mother of Good Counsel is in the Augustinian Church in Genazzano, Italy. This picture portrays Mary holding the child Jesus. Her veil is around Jesus' shoulders, and Mary, caring mother that she was, is giving some good counsel to her son.
An ancient legend says that this fresco was miraculously transported to Genazzano from its former home in Albania. The fresco came to rest on a narrow ledge inside the then unfinished Genazzano church, according to this legend, and it remains in the same place today.
During a restoration of the church begun in 1957, however, scientific tests gave evidence of the true origins of the small (12 inches by 17 inches) fresco. It was probably painted sometime between 1417 and 1431 by the Italian artist Gentile de Fabriano. It appears to have been part of a larger fresco that covered most of the church wall.
The unfinished church was used, even though more construction remained to be done. The wall with the fresco was later covered with other decorations, and even later was painted over. Years later a widow named Petruccia promised to pay for additional construction in the church. During this construction, the original painting of mother and child was revealed, perhaps by falling plaster or peeling paint.
Its unexpected appearance was considered by some to be a miracle. Thus the legend grew.
The Genazzano church became a popular place of pilgrimage. Numerous cures took place there. The Augustinian Friars were invited to minister to the spiritual needs of the pilgrims. They continue to serve there to this day.
Most Popes, shortly after their election to that office, visit the shrine of Our Mother of Good Counsel to pray for wisdom.

The event would go on to be celebrated as a major feast day in the Catholic Church.
Fast forward a few centuries, and we find ourselves in Florence, Italy, in the year 1478. On April 26th, the Pazzi conspirators carried out one of the most daring and infamous attacks in European history. The event would have far-reaching consequences for the city and its political landscape for years to come.
Moving across the globe, we land in America in the year 1607. On April 26th, the Jamestown expedition landed at Cape Henry, which would later become Virginia. This marked the beginning of the first successful English settlement in America and was a significant milestone in the history of the United States.
Jumping ahead a few more years, we arrive in Moscow in 1755. On April 26th, the first Russian university, Moscow State University, opened its doors to students. This was a major step forward for education in Russia, and the university would go on to become one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the country.
Finally, we arrive in London in 1928, where something remarkable happened on April 26th. Madame Tussaud's waxwork exhibition, which had been destroyed in a fire, reopened its doors. The exhibition was a popular attraction in London and had been visited by millions of people from around the world. Its reopening was a testament to the resilience of the people behind it and the enduring appeal of wax figures.
This video is a fascinating journey through time, exploring some of the most incredible events that have occurred on April 26th throughout history. It's a must-watch for anyone interested in history, culture, or simply curious about the world around us.
