This has been sitting in my inbox for aaaaaages, because I want to do it justice! It's actually a big facet of my research project that I'm going to go into much, much, much more depth on, but here's the short(er) summary:

The foundational text of the Hays Code was written by two Catholics: a Jesuit priest named Father Daniel Lord, and a man named Martin Quigley, who was the editor of the Motion Picture Herald. They grounded their guidelines in Catholic morality and values, based on the idea that art could be a vehicle for evil by negatively influencing the actions of those who view it.

The original list of guidelines written by Lord and Quigley was adapted into the Production Code, popularly known as the "Hays Code" after William Hays, the president of the Production Code Administration that enforced it. As president of the PCA, William Hays appointed a staunch Catholic man called Joseph Breen to enforce the code. Breen enforced it aggressively, confiscating the original reels of films he deemed inappropriate and against the Code. Many lost films from this era are only "lost" because Joseph Breen personally had them destroyed. Some were rediscovered later, but many were completely purged from existence.

When Breen died in 1965, Variety magazine wrote, "More than any single individual, he shaped the moral stature of the American moral picture." He was a very, very big deal, and was directly responsible for censoring more films than I could even begin to list here.

In 1937, Olga J. Martin, Joseph Breen’s secretary, said, “To an impoverished country which had become religious and serious-minded, the sex attitudes of the post-war period became grotesquely unreal and antedated. The public at large wanted to forget its own derelictions of the ‘gay twenties.' The stage was set for the moral crusade.”

In 1936, once the Code was being fully enforced on filmmakers by Joseph Breen, a letter was issued by the office of Pope Pius XI that praised Breen's work, and encouraged all good Catholics to support film censorship.

The letter read in part, "From time to time, the Bishops will do well to recall to the motion picture industry that, amid the cares of their pastoral ministry, they are under obligation to interest themselves in every form of decent and healthy recreation because they are responsible before God for the moral welfare of their people even during their time of leisure. Their sacred calling constrains them to proclaim clearly and openly that unhealthy and impure entertainment destroys the moral fibre of a nation. They will likewise remind the motion picture industry that the demands which they make regard not only the Catholics but all who patronize the cinema."

Basically, this letter was a reminder from the Papal authority that bishops and priests are supposed to stop people from engaging with "lewd" or "obscene" art. That meant supporting things like the Hays Code.

So, to summarize: the original text of the Hays Code was written by two Catholics, including a priest. The biggest and most aggressive censor under the Code was a Catholic man, who had the full support and approval of the Pope at the time. Good Catholics were called en-masse to support the Hays Code, because it was intentionally written to line up with Catholic teachings.

There's a lot more to say on the subject, and if you're interested in reading more on your own, I recommend the book "Pre-Code Hollywood: Sex, Immorality, and Insurrection in American Cinema, 1930-1934," by Thomas Doherty. There are plenty other sources I can recommend on request, but that's a solid place to start.

I had more time cleaning and reorganizing my room than watching this episode. I felt nothing watching certain parts. The only moments I cared for was the ones with Via because of the leak storyboards of this episode. It seems like nothing was changed unlike what happen to Ghostfuckers.

Will I be watching season three? Viv said that season 3 take a while to be released and it is going to be 15 episodes long.

That would be around 2026. I do not know if I want to be watching this show when I am 25 years old. The writing choices of this show are baffling. I think (do not quote me on this) but Viv said season three will focus on the Ars Goetia in an interview which sounds boring. I do not care about their rich classist society. Is Helluva going to be Bridgerton but in Hell?

I can see myself watching Hazbin when I am 25 because there are AUs that I can indulge in when the show's writing gets worse and has like 1000 plots going on, if I do not care for one, I can pay attention to another one. Helluva's main plot point is just Stolas and Blitz, and I am bored of them. I dislike both of them as characters and as a couple/

I don't care for the rest of IMP, Fizz, Ozzie, Bee, Sallie Mae, Striker, and etc and their storylines. The only character I like is Mammon and Via and they do not appear that much.

Talking about this show is a chore. I had fun watching this show back in 2022 (I'm late to the fandom) but now, it is just a chore to sit though. The main plot is boring, and the side plots are the same recycle stuff. I have more fun reading the back label of shampoo bottles than watching this show.

i will try my best to explain this but being very frank (and not at all in a negative way!!) i think we are probably just two fundamentally different people with two vastly different concepts of what constitutes love and longing

the short answer is simply bc they are different people. my love for this person (ill call them j) and my partner are separate things. because they are just separate humans and separate experiences. the things i love about them sometimes overlap but they are both my people in different ways. i would never compare them.

its all very messy but all three of us are close also. like this person is my partners best friend and the whole arrangement is kind of complicated and idk how much i wanna air my business out kfjfshdkj. tldr is that me and j love each other very deeply in a way that is not romantic nor quite platonic and they are someone that will always be in my life. we did try romance sort of but they are aro and i dont think that feeling is what i feel for them anyway. its different to what my partner makes me feel.

so the sense of love and longing is not the exact same though it's probably closer to 'romance' then what we view typically as friendship. like i hold them in my lap and other gay shit lol

im the kind of queer that is very free love about these kinds of things. my partner has a qpr who i dont know and everything too

my partner is my life partner and the person i feel closest to in my life. it is romantic of course but its also more than that. i talk to him about everything and trust in him to communicate and vice versa. if im jealous or lonely or scared - i tell him and we work it out and he does the same for me and we check in on each other all the time. he comes first and he always will.

but my love and affection for someone else does not dim my love for him. love isnt a scarce resource i have to preserve but something i give of my own will. its not a threat because there's nothing to threaten. no love will replace him because it's not like anyone can be him any way.

when your love for someone transcends the role they fill in your life, a lot of doors open about who and how you love i think. i fall in love and experience affection for people as they are if i had to put it to words. not because of what they can do or a desire for connection but because the experience of them, specifically, moves me. i cant really speak for other people but for me its like that.

im not someone who really personally subscribes to monogamy and i never really have. my partner and i have had a more open relationship for all of it pretty much with some years and my trust in him has only deepened over time and through several wounds.

i long and crave and miss people because they are who they are. no person is replaceable ykwim. so the absence of someone cant be filled by someone else and it also cant be changed by another person. my partner is my life partner and the man i want to marry someday.

but j is my j. i love them because they have silly idiosyncrasies. theyre a talented artist and skittish with affection and sensitive. and i love them so deeply it makes me sick. i love how much they try for me.

and i love my partner just as much. we'll spend new years together, all three of us (and j's whole family dsjfjsld) - but im seeing them both separately and im sure they'll see each other separately too

so its like these things are not contradictory to me in anyway. they're not feelings in conflict with one another inside of me at all. its complicated but relationships are always that way

A Brief Look at Stem(me) History

Wanted to know more about Black lesbian identities and I couldn't find a lot on Tumblr or Twitter so I did some research on stem/stemme myself. I'm not involved in queer discourse like that but I've noticed stemme being compared with futch both positively an negatively. The term "futch" is a mash up of butch and femme and the OG Futch Scale was posted 17th February 2011. In 2015, it got posted to Tumblr and became a meme, then an accidental "guide" on lesbian identity. Regardless of stances pro-futch or anti-futch I wanted to find info on stem/stemme as a Black lesbian identity for gender and gender expression. The modern definition of a stem/stemme is a Black lesbian whose gender expression and mannerisms fall between stud and femme. I've managed to find definitions not only supporting this but also definitions predating the futch scale, both pre and post meme version:

"Stem – A person whose gender expression falls somewhere between a stud and a femme.  (See also ‘Femme’ and ‘Stud’.)" Stud is defined as "An African-American and/or Latina masculine lesbian.  Also known as ‘butch’ or ‘aggressive’." (John Jay College of Criminal Justice LGBTQ+ Terminology, Eli R. Green, 2003-2004)

"Stemm A stemm is a gay/lesbian female who dresses like a guy, and dresses like a girl. Person 1: Look at that girl, she looks like a dude with all those guy clothes on, she has to be a stud Person 2: Well she was wearing girly clothes yesterday, so I thought she was a femm Person 3: Actually she's a stemm, she's wears boy clothes sometimes, and girl clothes other times" (Urban Dictionary definition of Stemm by user JenniferHill, November 8th 2009)

Can't we have a male character who doesn't want to be in a relationship with a female character not because he's gay or ace, but simply because not interested in that particular woman? Must there be a painful history between a man and a woman to explain why he doesn't want to be with her? I think writing a sitcom based on my maternal side of the family and small town life in south central Appalachia would be fantastic. A slightly dysfunctional but very loving extended working class family full of people who are hilarious, loving, accepting, helpful and very smart but constrained by the cycles of poverty, addiction, mental illness and general lack of resources and opportunities in the area.

I’ve never never been around my maternal family and felt unloved in the slightest, felt insecure about being gay or the black sheep. They’re good people. All of those people love me and they love my mom. Cousins I’d never heard of tried to step in and help her get away from my dad. Not the same with my paternal family, it’s always tense.

Examinations of Appalachian family structures are almost always negative and voyeuristic, except for like, The Waltons I guess. The documentaries done on Appalachian families suck ass. Fuck J. D. Vance big time.

Everything I Read in 2024

2024 ends tomorrow and it simultaneously feels like this year went by in the blink of an eye and like it went on forever. After not reading consistently for about five or six years, this was the year I pushed myself into getting back into my old hobby and I think that drastically improved my entire year. Motivating myself into reading motivated me into improving other aspects of my life, and while I still have a lot of work to do on myself (there always will be), I'm pretty happy of the progress I made this year and of the person I'm becoming. I'm usually blinded by negativity towards myself, but for once I look back and say, "I did good. I did good." Now here's every book I read in 2024. (Be warned that this post got away from me and it got a bit long.)

Carmilla by J. Sheridan le Fanu -- Read in February of 2024 -- 4 stars

This book was haunting, Carmilla's death stuck with me, and I can attest to the fact that those women are, in fact, pretty gay. This book reminded me of my love for reading.

2. Salem's Lot by Stephen King -- Read from Feb. - April of 2024 -- 5 stars

This book was a gift from a former teacher of mine, so there's sentimental value to it. I definitely wouldn't have picked this up on my own and I was convinced for like the first half of it that I would hate it. I didn't hate it. I like it quite a lot, in fact. Stephen King is the King of horror for a reason, and I definitely felt that while reading this, I think the way the horror was built up in this book was masterful. I think that if I were to read it now, I probably wouldn't have given it five stars, but evidently, I think I needed to read this book when I did to motivate me to keep reading more books.

3. Fifty Beasts to Break Your Heart by GennaRose Nethercott -- Read in April of 2024 -- 4 stars

My first short story collection, ever and it made me appreciate short stories and made me want to read more short story collections. All of the stories in this book were, to put it simply, strange as fuck and I liked that about it. They didn't always make sense, but I appreciated the absurdity of them for what it was. Not every short story in this collection was a winner, but I had fun.

4. Someone You Can Build a Nest In by John Wiswell -- Read in May of 2024 -- 3 stars

I randomly came across this book in a bookshop and I had to get it because the concept just sounded so fun and interesting. The beginning was good, but the book kind of lost me towards the end. I really did not like the plot twist, and it held me back from fully enjoying the book, that being said, I don't think this book was bad and there was a lot about it that I liked, including some parts of the ending. I'm looking forward to seeing whatever else John Wiswell has in store.

5. Delilah Green Doesn't Care by Ashley Herring Blake -- Read from May - June of 2024 -- 2 stars

My first romance novel! Unfortunately, I disliked pretty much every character in this book, I found the romance between Clare and Delilah to be lacking, and it felt like every single conflict in the book was miscommunication. I am not one of those people that's like "EW!! Miscommunication! Miscommunication is automatically stupid, and it automatically ruins a book!" but I didn't like the fact that every. single. conflict could be boiled down to, "There's been a misunderstanding." Also, felt like a lot of character and relationship development got cramped into the last sixty pages. I am not writing the romance genre off entirely, though, and I do want to explore more books in it. I could go on about things I didn't like this book, but I won't. One thing I want to point out that I liked was those scenes of Delilah bonding with Ruby, Clare's daughter.

6. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There by Lewis Carroll -- Read from May - Sep. of 2024 -- 4 stars.

I've always enjoyed the story of Alice in Wonderland, but I've never actually read it with my own two eyes. I wanted to remedy that this year and I ended up buying a copy of it. I really liked both stories, but I think I prefer Through the Looking Glass over Wonderland. These stories were very absurd and confusing, which meant that my imagination ran wild while reading them and I interpreted a lot of things to relate back to my own life. I did end up really liking them, but they definitely are more of an experience than a cohesive story.

Sidenote: I really want to watch the Alice in Wonderland ballet now, I've seen clips of it, and it looks amazingly choreographed.

7. Han's Christian Andersen Fairytales by the man himself -- Read from Sep. - Oct. of 2024 -- 4 stars.

Like with Alice, I've always enjoyed Hans Christian Andersen's fairytales. Unlike with Alice, growing up, I used to own a copy of Andersen's fairytales, and I did actually read them, but then the book went missing a while ago and this year I finally decided to buy another copy. I had fun with the collection; some stories I liked more than others. Going into this my favorite story was The Steadfast Tin Soldier but after reading these as an adult, I think my favorite story is now The Snow Queen. I think reading these re-connected me with my childhood and it was just nice to re-experience some of the stories and experience others for the first time.

8. Sula by Toni Morrison -- Read from Sep. - Oct. of 2024 -- 5 stars.

This book was originally assigned reading for my ENC 1102 class, but I never got around to it then because I was majorly depressed and really struggling academically. After I improved, I decided to actually give Sula a try, because why not. Well, I loved it. Toni Morrison is an amazing writer, everything in this book was written vividly and with emotion imbued into every single word. When I read this book, I did not feel like I was reading, I felt like I was opening a window directly into another moment in time. It's a short book but it has so much to it, and I would love to re-read it in the future and see what else I can gain from it. I'm actually glad that I didn't read it when I was supposed to, because I do not think I would have appreciated it nearly enough then the way I did when I actually got to it.

9. Frightful Folklore of North America: Illustrated Folk Horror From Greenland to the Panama Canal by Mike Bass -- Read in Nov. of 2024 -- 3.5 stars.

A short and easy read, this was something I read when I was bored in order to pass the time. The best part of this book is hands down the creative illustrations, and that's the primary reason I would recommend this book to anyone. I loved that Cuban folklore was included, I love the idea of non-Cubans reading this book and learning a little bit about Cuban folklore, and wider Latin American folklore in general. This book also got me interested in folklore and folk horror, and I want to do further reading into that in the future. However, this book was not without flaw, and it could have used some more proof-reading sessions, especially from people that are from the countries and tribes being talked about.

10. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle -- Read from Sep. - Nov. -- 5 stars.

I loved reading these stories and I especially loved the characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, and I especially adored their friendship. Reading this collection was some of the most fun I had this year and I'm a little sad I finished it, but I'm looking forward to reading everything else in the series that I haven't yet (which is a lot).

11. My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix -- Read from October - November -- 4 stars.

The penultimate book. This one took me by surprise by how much I ended up liking it and being invested in it. Naturally, the thing I found most compelling about this book was the friendship between Gretchen and Abby. This book had a slow build-up, and it felt a little frustrating at times, but getting to that exorcism made it all the worth it and I loved it, and I teared up and it was great.

12. Hijab Butch Blues by Lamya H. -- Read in December -- 5 stars.

I'm not normally interested in memoirs, so this book was the biggest step out of comfort zone in this entire year. Maybe this is a recency bias, but this is my favorite book of this entire year. When I first read this book, I was at some of the lowest that I've been this entire year. Reading this book woke me up from that. This book was comforting in some ways, but it was also a call to action in others. This book made me reflect on myself and in all the ways that I could improve, all the work that I need to do on myself. Hijab Butch Blues talks about a lot of important and heavy topics like misogyny, racism, islamophobia, homophobia (things that Lamya H. experienced firsthand, over and over), but it also talks about finding your community and finding yourself, amongst other things. And though those aspects of positivity and optimism does not mean that the ugly parts of society cease to exist, it does give us a reason to keep fighting so that the people that come after us can live in a world that's a little better than the world we lived through.

It's a really good book and I highly recommend it.

And that's every book I read this year. I feel like this year was more about me finding my footing as a reader than anything else, and I'm excited to go into the next year feeling surer of myself.

Hello! I was wondering how queer relationships will be handled in your story? Will there be any difference between them and straight romances? For example, if my gay MC is romancing Jean, will there be some different dialogue than if my MC were a girl? I'm down to read no matter what, just like to gauge this when reading IF's! 😊🏳️‍🌈

Queer relationships are completely different from straight ones^^

Uma is probably the one with the least changes now that I think about it. They react to MC's gender but the variants are sort of similar.

Travis and Kai + Uma are the only three ROs who are openly out of the closet. They acknowledge MC's gender but they don't really care ajdka their attitude is the same regardless. Kai is more open with their very based "fuck homophobes" policy and they do give more reactions when out in public with MC. Maybe Fem!Kai more so than Male!Kai because of Liv^^ but don't quote me on that^^

Wanda doesn't hide the fact that she's queer but she's surprisingly not as open about it. People really don't like her so she takes a page off of J's book and has decided to remain in the closet just in case! Wanda and a female/enby!MC will often be mistaken as "friends" publicly.

Jade/Jean isn't really ashamed of being queer but they do feel a strange sense of empowerment by "fitting in" the spectrum of normalcy (cis white hetero). J is also kind of scared of their father not accepting that side of them. They see no positive outcome in coming out of the closet, and so they don't want to. Same-sex relationship/enby MC and J have a secret relationship instead of dating openly.

Statler has two completely different routes depending on gender. Their queerness is something they feel ashamed of, and they've repressed that side of them to the point where they can just... pretend it's not there. Statler has a lot of internalized homophobia. They'll never be outwardly negative toward any queer characters, all of Statler's hate is reserved to themself. It's a "Statler-thing".

Alexander was born in 1844 in France in a middle class family with his mother's and three siblings, He being the youngest in the middle, Before he died he was 24-25 years old.

Alexander has always had a tendency to be a bit sadistic and aggressive, Theories suggest that he is like this because of the abuse he suffered from his mother when he was a boy. He always had a strange behavior, sometimes appearing to be insane.

Many people of his time thought he was the murderer and rapist who was on the loose at the time, And indeed, they were right, Alexander used to hunt younger men or men his own age to rape and kill them, He did this for years until he was caught killing a man by a woman called "Mary Cristiane Pierre", who was a not-so-close "friend" of his (Not so close friend because he hated her because she was a lesbian and married to a trans woman), When she caught him, he obviously tried to kill her, but failing, she ran, but unfortunately for her, she took him to her own home accidentally, So since Alexander couldn't kill her, he killed Mary's wife, And then Mary hated Alexander for killing the love of her life, she killed him in the same way he killed her wife.

He went on to possess and haunt generations of Mary's family, Until present times, in which its current host is Percy Pierre
