Changing Channels as gay dean propaganda. After Gabriel I guess sees Dean watching Dr. Sexy, somehow knows Dean likes Dr. Sexy, AND after Gabriel sees just how Dean reacts to his Dr. Sexy and sees that Dean’s crush is so legit as to break the illusion and help Dean uncover Gabriel, Gabriel– as his torture meant to break them– scripts Dean into a sitcom scene version of Supernatural where he’s hooked up with a random woman in a bikini. This is Supernatural as a tv show written by Gabriel within Chuck’s universe, so it’s essentially a parody of the most shallow read of the show possible. And while Dean’s reaction to Dr. Sexy was entirely unscripted and real, a true act of his free will, his encounter with the woman in the motel room is entirely forced, scripted by an angel, and fake.

Laugh track. DEAN waves at her as she leaves. SAM shuts the door and shakes his head. DEAN speaks through a forced smile.

DEAN How long do we have to keep doing this?

And it’s torture, and it's so interesting that this in particular is torture, because it's not like getting shot or slapped or strapped to a machine to get hit in the balls, it's just a dollhouse version of Chuck’s bigger universe, endlessly playing their parodistic roles that Gabriel has assigned to them.

And then Dean, in another genuine act of free will, goes on to figure out the Trickster is an angel because of Cas’s literally disrupting the plan by breaking into the fake, scripted Supernatural™ where Dean is scripted to act as if he's had sex with a random hot woman, and Dean figures it out because he can read Cas and knows him and can tell that Cas knows Gabriel just by seeing how he looks at him.

oh golly this episode has it all! dean's closed-off expression at john's pyre! dean in a t-shirt working on baby (layers theory!) sam all of a sudden wanting to do what john would have wanted and grieving his loss heavily while dean is coming apart at the seams! sam accidentally phrasing something so it ends up sounding like CSA implications and dean making a face. after they have to ditch the car, sam only carrying a backpack while dean carries two duffles. dean biting his nails!!

there are so many superficially little moments in this episode that feel like little pieces in a much larger puzzle.

but one of the most interesting ones to me is dean starting to flirt with jo and then stopping himself.

DEAN: So, I guess I've got fifty-one hours to waste. Maybe tonight we should, uh... No, you know what? Never mind. JO: What? DEAN: Nothing, just, uh, wrong place, wrong time.

at my core, i really do think dean is gay. and it's moments like this that solidify it for me. because, while i do think he craves the touch and intimacy and public ease of hooking up with women, sometimes the necessary performance can be too much.

dean, here, is very vulnerable. he's grieving his dad. he's furious with his dad. he's raw and undone and could really, really use some comfort. and yet, there is something about trying to seek out that kind of physical comfort that exhausts him.

and, of course, there are other possible readings of this but we'll revisit this theme in 5.14 and 13.05...

and we just have to talk about the smashing baby scene. visceral and musicless and furious and agonized. it is magnificent. and deeply meaningful to me that dean smashes up baby's trunk - the part of the car that represents his life as a hunter and all that entails.

and, like dean's face looking at john's pyre with a single tear down his face, dean's face here in the end of episode shot with his damp eyes and slumping shoulders and trembling lips, contains so many layers. confusion and anger and grief and feeling cornered.

thank you! i think it’s important not to devalue cassie’s relationship with dean — something real was happening between them — but there’s some room for nuance. sometimes you’re twenty two and deeply entangled in an intimate relationship with a woman because she Sees you like no one else ever has, and you’d do anything to be seen. and you’ve been brought up in an environment that has led you to believe Making Sacrifices is the only way to actually show love, so even if you’re gay, even if you have a small inkling you prefer men, isn’t it worth it to make a little compromise in order to continue to be seen by someone you really care about? isn’t she worth it? isn’t it a relief to have found somebody you’d actually try to be normal for?

contrast that shit with lisa, lmao. that pill goes down a lot harder at age thirty and i don’t think he actually likes her that much.

dean winchester love interests are so weird because they'll sell you the idea of some chemistry/romantic potential with a woman and then shut it down dramatically...like. okay i guess. was this meant to somehow counteract dean's attraction to men or what

jo: flirting for seasons, she had a crush on him. then dean smith says jo is her sister

lisa: actual relationship and move in together. oh but he only did that because it was sam's dying wish, as it is said textually, and then he gets her memory wiped and never sees her again.

amara: super intense attraction. and then its also explicitly stated that its not love, its a magentism he cant control and feels uncomfortable and disgusted by it.
