Isso porque receber um bichinho de estimação de presente requer uma responsabilidade que, muitas vezes, o 'contemplado' não está disposto a oferecer. Os animais não são brinquedos e o abandono deles após datas específicas do ano aumenta. Segundo dados da ONG Gavaa, entre os meses de dezembro e janeiro o abandono de animais aumenta, em média, 60%.

Animais de estimação exigem cuidados especiais

Por isso, presentear com um pet exige muita atenção, pois o bichinho de estimação dependerá de seus tutores até o fim da vida. Já que as crianças não são capazes de assumir todas as responsabilidades, os tutores serão sempre os pais, que precisam estar conscientes dessa escolha. Com um tempo médio de vida entre 10 e 15 anos para cães e até 20 anos para gatos, é preciso ter cautela sobre a espécie, que deve ser compatível com a vida e condições dos futuros donos. Roedores, como o porquinho-da-índia, são uma boa escolha para quem vive em apartamentos ou casas pequenas, com um tempo de vida que é por volta de seis a oito anos.

"Muitos tomam a decisão de forma precipitada, sem analisar que a chegada desse novo membro à família traz mudanças na rotina e no bolso", diz Jorge Morais, veterinário e fundador da rede Animal Place.

Uma pesquisa conduzida no Brasil pelo Ibope e o Centro de Nutrição e Bem-Estar Animal Waltham™, da Mars Petcare, mostrou que os motivos que geram o abandono ou a devolução aos abrigos são inúmeros. Apenas 41% dos tutores afirmam que levariam o animal junto, caso tivessem que se mudar. Outros 14% justificam o abandono alegando motivos facilmente contornáveis, alguns deles como: não ter tempo para cuidar como gostaria; porque o comportamento era inadequado; porque o filho nasceu; porque era muito caro; por não ter com quem deixar o pet na hora de viajar; etc.
