Fuck it, TCG Tournament
Slap-dash and 1-day polls to try and get this thing finished before the hyper fixation dries up. Made this entirely on impulse.
If anyone wants to take this and run it with longer polls or just take the idea down to the bracket feel free to just @ me so I can follow 🤙

The fandom god discussion is interesting, but I feel it’s sometimes hindered by an unwillingness to separate gods from mortal society, or even a sort of over-eagerness to project our own reality onto them, which simply doesn’t work. I've seen the gods referred to as rulers or tyrants demanding worship (which I kinda understand because it’s something Ludinus says in-game, though it’s funny to see fandom corners confidently repeat the inaccurate talking points of the antagonist) but more interestingly I've also seen them referred to as a higher/the highest social class, as colonizers imposing themselves on mortals, the raven queen specifically as new money. Overall these comparisons tend to talk about the gods and their actions regarding Aeor in the past and predathos/the Vanguard in the present less as if they're about saving their own lives and more as if they want to preserve their powerful position.
The gods, by their very nature, are above mortals. They cannot be compared to any mortal ruling class because they didn’t choose or strive for that power and cannot feasibly get rid of it/step down/redistribute it (nor do they actually in any sense rule; killing the raven queen, unlike killing an actual queen, will not end the 'tyranny' of death), they simply have it by virtue of being gods. Saying that’s unfair or unequal and that the gods should be killed because of it is akin to saying it’s unfair a mountain is bigger than you and demanding it be levelled, except the gods, unlike mountains, are living, feeling beings who shouldn’t have to die because some people can’t stand the idea of not always being top dog. Thing is, the gods themselves ultimately understood this power imballance and that they can't help but hurt Exandria the way humans can't help but step on bugs, and thus removed themselves from the equation by creating the divine gate. Saying this isn’t enough and that they're clinging to power is just demanding they line themselves up to be killed.
#critical role#cr3#downfall#nella talks cr#ultimately all these 'ruling class' comparisons are simply flawed and don’t work when under the slightest bit of scrutiny#gods arent rulers or tyrants bc they don’t rule and can't be deposed#they are representantations and guardians of (mostly natural) concepts#and those concepts won’t go away bc you killed the gods. death and nature and the fucking sun will still remain#they aren’t colonizers of mortals (wtf lmao) who demand they be worshiped and mortals live according to their oppressive rule#again did you watch calamity? not even before the divine gate did the gods demand worship or even respect#they were never less respected than during the age of arcanum and still they were just chilling#(until someone released the betrayers and they had to step in to stop the ultimate destruction of exandria)#technically you could argue they were colonizers against the titans but even that feels like a stretch#the titans to me feel less like people and more like representations of the chaotic and deathly side of nature#being angry they were killed sounds like being angry someone stopped a hurricane just bc the hurricane was there first#I'm sorry but that hurricane would've flattened you. it wouldn’t appreciate your support bc it isn't a person#and 'a higher social class' fucking NEW MONEY? this is just blatant projection#I'm sorry but not everything more powerful than you is a stand in for oppression#sometimes it’s a narrative stand in for nature and i promise nature isn't oppressing you

I think another massive flaw in some Ludinus' arguments is ... he has been free to roam the world for how many centuries now enacting his plans and justifying his means? He has been preaching to people all over Exandria with his magic megaphone and swaying plenty of people to his cause, freely. Looks to me like the Divine Gate solution works pretty well, no?
TRULY like we know for a fact the gods can just. Cast a 9th level spell every turn when they are physically present even when bound partially by mortal form, and Ludinus knows this too. If the gods were actually controlling everyone's every move why didn't they kill him. Why didn't they destroy the Dwendalian throne for banning half the prime deities, or kill Delilah when she was off fucking around with trying to create a new Betrayer god. The story of Aeor being destroyed by the gods is on the historical record and has been for at least 7 years and they haven't shut it down. Why didn't Pelor just blast Abaddina to bits the second she started talking. Why does Lolth have to wait for a teenage girl to put a hat on before she can act through her. How come Keyleth is out there having been furious at the gods for 3 decades and none of them have taken her off the board. Ludinus keeps being like "we are FORCED to worship them" you literally aren't, Chetney's out here pushing 400 and he's like "I can barely keep the names of the gods straight and have not thought about them for more than 30 seconds at a time until joining Bells Hells", there's entire "godless lands" in parts of Issylra, countless people in Exandria simply aren't religious and truly, no one gives a shit on a large scale. Keyleth and Allura and Percy are all on good terms with Vasselheim; Bertrand was from the Quad Roads and I do not think he had the Lawbearer's blessing if you know what I mean. Ludinus is mad about the Calamity (valid) but he's ultimately just as mad that his mommy and daddy still worshiped the Arch Heart or the Moon Weaver or whoever instead of simmering in rage for the remainder of his life. He and frankly most of the Vanguard sound like that guy who became a violent men's rights activist because his mother made him take an anti-diarrheal when he was a kid.

It still makes no sense to me that good old Gortash is hanging out in Wyrm's Rock Fotress.
Like do you know how far away that place is from the city exactly? This is a map of the city.
Tumblr media
If you're confused cuz u can't find Wyrm's Rock or Rivington asap, don't worry. It's a mistake one could make with the way BG3 portrays it cuz yk what?
Tumblr media
This tiny arse bit down here is where my guy is chilling. That's a fucking days worth journey to reach the lower city and you can't tell me that good old 'I'm gonna be archduke and rule this baby' Gortash decided to head off into quasi excile himself. Like he's so far removed from the city he might as well not be in it at all atp. (Also yes, some key locations are pretty.... not where they should be in bg3—looking especially at u Dancing Axe and Counting House).
Am I gonna change that? No. But do I want to? Well, High Constable and Master of Walls sounds right up old Gorty's ally b4 the coronation but while he was already mingling directly in politics as a lord and honestly him just occupying (and later just not leaving) the Watch Citadel sounds like something he'd do but people love his little 'sad-divorced-dad' office/apartment in the old Fotress so he just gets to have multiple places cuz otherwise I might have an aneurism trying to concoct my plot.

Avarenya, having just stumbled out of the Great Gate with the Great Sigil Stone: Alcohol. Quite extraordinary amounts of alcohol.

what's own clothes day??
idk if this is a thing in other countries but uk schools that have a school uniform sometimes do a thing called own clothes day or "mufti day" where you get to come in dressed however you want (within reason). we had it once a term and i always used it as an excuse to dress as silly as possible

// sometimes I think about how many times in bg3 you get conflicts that don't have an objectively "best" outcome. I think about freeing the 7000 vampires, for example. Freeing them is the ethical thing to do, because they are all innocent victims, but it remains true that leaving thousands of vampires loose, even in the underdark, is a bad bad idea. Not only are they traumatized people, but they're predators who have only their instincts to help them survive in an unfamiliar land that isn't exactly bountiful in terms of wildlife. If they don't do well, they'll die or be slaughtered, and if they do they'll ruin entire communities or ecosystems, depending on whether they feed on people or animals.
#i was thinking again of that line minthara says about how the patriars should have the refugees work for them and have them defend the city#and tav is like 'um that's slavery you're describing?'#and she's like 'call it what you want but would you rather have them die of starvation stuck outside the city walls?'#and i mean the player doesn't have much to say in that matter but there is still a complex situation being presented with no easy solution#because bg has been the destination for refugees for a long time already#like it was already in a state of crisis after the descent when many people who could not return to their homes#massively started to arrive to the gate#right when their duke was gone and left the city without a ruler and the military without a leader#now the government is even WORSE and so is the refugee situation since they're now coming from everywhere#it is painfully true that the guild is still the only truly functioning organism in the city#and they're also having trouble with the absolute#like bg objectively doesnt have the space or the means to sustain the refugees#the patriars may#but in the end gold cant feed a family either#but eating the rich does sound like the most sensible option still-#ooc#the only objectively good ending i think is if you could leave the githyanki egg with lae'zel#also i think of the quest zevlor gives for killing kagha#which sounds like a sensible option when he says it but it prompts the grove massacre#but you can explain it to halsin and he understands that they forgot their principles and attacked defenseless refugees#and you merely defended yourself and them#then again if you look in the right places you can see dialogues suggesting that the refugees are indeed damaging the grove#like chopping trees without the druid's consent#so.#yeah i just have a deep appreciation for some aspects of the game's writing#that show there often isn't an objectively best choice#and you are just doing your best with the information you have and what your morals dictate
