His expression doesn't seem to lighten as the explanation is given - he's torn on how he feels on the matter. Of course humans would still find monsters strange.. their release back to the surface has been a somewhat recent development, and humans would be content simply misconstruing their existence. It only makes sense that someone would be interested in investigating, but being investigated is a strange experience. Perhaps it's fair, considering he had done similar things to humans before.. maybe gathering the intent would be wise.

"I see. I am.. still determining if I should be taking any. My name is Gaster, and I am a monster - a skeleton monster, to be specific. May I ask why you are studying the.. strange and unusual?"

"this mind isn't mine. who am i to judge?" Poppy mutters as he paces alongside the railing of one of the many pathways around The Core. Taking it apart wasn't going nearly as well or as quickly as he'd wanted it to. How long could he live separate from his SOUL?

Furthermore, how long could a SOUL power The Core? He didn't know. And he felt like it was going to drive him insane thinking about it.

The hand writing briefly stops in its scrawling to give a wave as it's glanced towards, although that is the most reaction given from them. Gaster on the other hands seems intently focused on any insight the cricket has to give. It doesn't expect anything deeply profound or all that eloquent - it is aware this may be the first proper experiment he's taken part in - but that's something it can easily manage.

There's a moment where it simply waits for him to continue in his explanation.. although it does squint after it lasts longer than it perhaps should. He doesn't look all too well, does he? Now, this could either be a breakthrough and it means things are working, or.. unfortunately, he may be inclined to believe the more likely option is that he was right in his assessment of raw lobster meat having a bad effect on him. The phrase ' Big G ' certainly helps it believe that, given the way it makes it cringe and its bones rattle.

It does look very startled when he passes out mid sentence. At least he isn't dead, given the way he rolls himself over - oh dear angel he's going to fall onto the floor. It quickly tries to reach forwards and catch him before he hits the floor, although.. that doesn't work at all, given the way he simply falls directly through the holes in his palms. Great. It briefly takes a moment to simply scowl to itself for forgetting that fact.

Well, the floor isn't a great place regardless. It picks him up with it's fingers, setting him back on the counter. It pokes at him once or twice for a response, and then checking for a heartbeat. He seems alive at least.. hopefully he stays that way, considering it isn't a medical doctor. It's a physicist and an engineer. The last time it tried to heal anyone ended in death, the cause of five other deaths, and a declaration of war. Needless to say, it isn't thrilled about the idea of doing so again.

Until he wakes once more, it'll simply.. set him on one of the couches more comfortable throw pillows. After a few minutes of wondering if that's enough, he'll set a smaller cup of herbal tea on the end table. There. Taking a seat on the further end of the couch, it supposes there's nothing more he can do except wait.

Oh, thank the stars. He snatches it up with a relieved "thanks" and starts on scrubbing his gloves with vigor, almost to the point that he worries he'll rub right through the fabric. Disgusting. He always did hate sealife.

"Well," he begins carefully (after a startled sideways glance and a few moments of staring at the extra hands he materializes), "reckon I can try my level best."

Jiminy winds his face up in deep concentration, trying to self-evaluate. He's neither a doctor nor a scientist, and he severely lacks self-awareness. Analyzing his own state of being is difficult at best.

"I'm not all too sure what I was feelin' before. Uh, fine, I suppose... little chilly, maybe. Or, uh, do you mean - do you mean in the head? Pretty sure all my memories before this were my own. Still are, I think." Another pause. Is that what he's asking? He doesn't feel any more or less lobster-like than before. But then how would he tell? He knows nothing about being a lobster. "Actually, it's kinda hard to, uh..."

Hold on. It's just hard to focus in general, actually, because he feels a little lightheaded and clammy. The room is swimming just a bit, but he's not sure if that's in his head or just something he's perceiving because of how seasick he feels. Which is weird because he's not even out at sea (unless he is?). He's no longer certain. Gaster's voice swims in and out of his awareness.

Then he shakes his head and he's fine. Totally okay and normal. Not sure what that was about, that was weird. Though he still does feel nauseous. He nods his head absently and starts walking in a small circle to shake it off.

"Sure, sure! I'm a real dedicated journalist, you know. I'll keep notes and everything, Big G - by the time I'm back you'll have so much lobster material to work with you won't know what to—"

Abruptly, he pitches forward and lands flat on his face. And then flops over sideways and rolls right off the edge of the counter and onto the floor. Dead(?).

What he's referring too doesn't need to be specified; it's obvious just from looking at each other. In the rare times it ever leaves the vault it's claimed as home, this is the only place it ever visits. It's the only one that would allow it to. Everywhere else looked upon him with scorn and outright disgust, barring it from mingling. It's far too tired at this point to fight or be upset by it. It usually just keeps to itself, but it supposed it would be rude not to make small talk - and it would really rather keep the one place that allowed it to trade for essentials.

A brief moment is held in awkward silence as it's unsure what to do with the bags in its hands currently. After a moment of being paused like a frightened deer, slowly the bags drop to the ground so he can properly reply.

"If it is our shared condition you refer to, then yes. Me too. Is that how you open up many conversations, or is this your first attempt with that line?"

They would not. You are not in for a good time.

Underfell!Wingding (Fell) would only be romantically involved with his SOULMATE . His ego and hyperfixation on his work wouldn’t allow anything less. So for a SOULMATE to leave him would be incomprehensible to him. He would outright deny it and come to the conclusion that something was controlling your SOUL against your own will. If he couldn’t find a “solution” to “free you” immediately, then he has no choice but to quarantine you until he does.

“It’s for your own good; you’re clearly enthralled. / You’re sick, I need to help you.”

He’ll take you back once you realize it’s for the best.

Siren!Wingding (Apex): Depends if mated or not. Fully mated would destroy him, like no eating or sleeping until he dusted level of destruction. Otherwise, immediate detachment and distancing. He’ll erase you from his life to the best of his capabilities. If a fellow scientist, unless you’re wildly more successful than him, this will result in you getting black listed in the community.

He will never accept you back unless fully mated, but the damage done will be too big. Even fully mated, he’ll keep his distance.

Sciencetale!Wingding (Professor): Accepts it but is so, so petty. Will make your life hell afterwards in small, hard to prove ways. Will rebound very quickly.

You live rent free in his head and he hates it.

Well, if that isn't an instant cause for concern, it isn't sure what is. It's rare for him to venture down to the true lab these days, considering it is usually so far removed from his daily routine now. Rather ironic, considering he used to spend possible weeks on end studying here. Now however, it's gotten mostly all the research equipment it needs down within it's own easier to access basement turned laboratory.

There is an emphasis on mostly. There is still a good amount of equipment that cannot be moved within that space, so when he needs something specific, there are still times when he must visit it once more. This time, William decided to accompany him - and he hopes he will not come to regret allowing that.

"Perhaps you should take a seat if that is the case - I apologize, the ventilation has not cycled since my last visit. It should begin shortly. is there anything I can do to assist until then?"

He can tell this is a new situation for him, and appreciates that he at least tries to make it a little less obvious. He composes himself quicker than most likely would, so that is a rather significant point for him.

"I understand. If it is any reassurance, you should not have to face any issues. I am melting, but this happens quite frequently. If you will give me a moment, I should be able to alleviate it. Somewhat."

After that, he starts.. shifting. The black liquid making up his form begins to coagulate and rise. His skull rises to the top with it, although the hands remain floating, forming a sort of pillar to rest his head atop. Hopefully it's less unsettling.. even if he does somewhat hover over the other now.

McCoy's not sure what he should be looking at, - the puddle, the floating hands; he's seen a whole lot in the last few years, but nothing exactly like this - but he's not about to be rude, so he nods in its general direction as the translator relays its message back to him, trying to gather his wits.

"No, no, not at all. Just surprised, like I said. Most folks I run into are a little more, ah, solid, you understand. Not all, of course, but," as a general rule of thumb, sure, though he simply clears his throat and continues on. "Well, in any case, I'm glad to hear it. I'm good, but not good enough to keep somebody from melting. If that's... I assume that's what's happening here," though now he's a little uncertain of that. He certainly can't figure out how the fellow's supposed to get around like this, but they did say they were used to it.

Also got this silly guy earlier today and I was freaking out because I didn’t think to ss because I was just so spooked and shocked to see a pair of eyes behind Seb on the death screen, so fucking glad this happened to someone else so that I can have proof that it both exists and that I’m not crazy

Speaking of, though, I do wonder, as has been pointed out by commenters on the thread on the ss sent above, if the guy is the guy whose telling Sebastian what he can and cannot show us during death sequences. He is referred to as simply „he” and this mysterious „he” appears quite a bit throughout the game and is something I feel we should theorise more as a fandom.

One thing of note I noticed, and you’ll have to take my word for it, is the fact that He is mentioned during the little cryptic snippets of dialogue(?) when the lights flicker before an angler attack. As @clanwarrior-tumbly theorised, many lines suggest this to be the self-aware character we play as, but if that be the case then how come the player we play as knows this mysterious unnamed individual? This oddly strikes me as similar to the relationship many theorise Kris(a deltarune character) to have with Gaster, ie having been partially the reason why we as the player are thethered to the particular character that we play as. All I’m saying, it would be DOPE for this mysterious unnamed individual to be somewhat like W.D gaster.

One more tidbit I have been thinking of that I thought I’d mention, many people say that the „He” Painter refers to is Sebastian. I may be wrong here so please let me know, as Painter might’ve mentioned Sebastian by name and I’m just misremembering. Either way, if im NOT mistaken in this, I’d like to put forward the proposition that the „he” who promises both the good people and Painter freedom from the facility could be this mysterious individual. Even if it IS Sebastian and I was mistaken, I think we have good reasons to believe that the mysterious individual is giving direct orders to Sebastian, as suggested by „His rules, not mine” and the aforementioned event where what could be the individual in question appears behind Sebastian on the Death screen, almost like monitoring him

Since He monitors Sebastian on the death screen, Id assume, like Sebastian, he is aware of the „resets”, ie the player continuing past death in other runs of the game. My theory is, perhaps the freedom this individual offers isn’t just from the blacksite itself, but from the timeloop they all find them within as we, the players, play the game. Atleast in a Meta way, who knows

How would Songfell Frisk react to meeting an opposite gender version of herself?

If she ever did, it would be through some shenanigans with Gaster—he allows her to look in a particularly magicked mirror, perhaps, or leaves a little thread of subspace hanging, and Frisk encounters her other self in another dream or liminal space.

Assuming it was a male Frisk who had been through her exact life and circumstances, he would be a lot like her, both inside and out. Lean, on the short side, nice features with a well-kept little beard, a lovely baritone voice…and a boss monster hanging around who absolutely adores him. Even if they couldn’t reproduce, the love is there simply because they each are who they are 🫡

Both Frisks would be fascinated by what they figure is just a weird dream or magical hallucination, and their first impression is that their other self turned out much more attractive than they did. (Sigh.) They’d be too polite to ask really personal questions about what it’s physically like to be each other, but once they’re more comfortable from punning back and forth, she tells him that she’s pregnant, or a mother…

And after a long moment, he congratulates her, but he’s so wistful that she feels guilty. They wish each other well, and the next morning, she decides not to tell Sans. It was fun, and weird, and a little sad, but it was just a dream, or a hallucination, or whatever. Sans can tell something’s on her mind, but she’s so busy that she soon forgets it entirely.

Gaster gets his comeuppance for meddling: she never tells him exactly what or who she saw or what was said. He almost dies of curiosity, then concludes that it serves him right.

Have you ever wondered who it might belong to?

When I was listening to the song "Broken Truce", my eyes glided over this soul without lingering on it. I told myself it was just a slightly strange heart like so many others you find with the different OC's the Creators come up with... But the day my brain finally twiged that it wasn't normal, it made me wonder...

Huh, that's strange... A weird soul covered in black in an image illustrating a song in a web series that has a habit of playing on words and images to imply clues... shown directly in the foreground, blurred what's more, interesting, isn't it? I've checked the series and I've never found in Error's cables any souls other than the normal ones; monster souls and red Determination souls. Not even human souls like Kindness, Patience, Justice, etc. Jakei is a person who pays attention to detail. Given that she animates her series on her own and that it's a mammoth task, she's got into the habit of not cluttering up her plans with unnecessary details. So why would she stick a random soul in there?

That's when I said to myself: no. This soul has a meaning. But whose could it be? And why would it be in Error's possession?

There are lots of characters whose souls are gloomy and a bit odd... Error, X-Gaster, Fatal Error, Fresh, Nightmare...

Firstly, even if it looks like one, it can't be Nightmare's because his soul is an apple. Anyway, Error's cables have no effect on him, and then, well... It simply wouldn't make any sense or be of any interest to the story.

Error's then? After all, he's a corrupt being in a way, and we're talking about an appearance in a song about his relationship with Ink. But even if he had one... It would be glitchy and certainly not that different from basic monster souls. Same goes for Fatal.

Gaster has his soul in his possession and it doesn't look like that anyway...

Fresh, his soul is directly the parasite...

INK HAS NO SOUL (⁠┛⁠◉⁠Д⁠◉⁠)⁠┛⁠彡⁠┻⁠━⁠┻ !!!!!!

Here's my theory: the soul in Error's threads is Ink's soul. Let's look at it: it's covered in a kind of blackish liquid with bluish tints. Black liquid is often associated with hatred or suffering. And if not, it's simply covered with ink. And blue, whether in general or in Underverse 0.7's context, is associated with sadness. So: sadness and suffering, in a concentration so strong that it had an impact on the very appearance of the soul... The emotions Ink must have been feeling when he was stripped of his essence! Ink suffers from severe denial in relation to the emotion represented by the blue, since it's the only one that's always full, so it coincides. And whose soul would it be otherwise? Why would Jakei have drawn it in THIS video specifically? A song about Ink and Error? Why in the foreground, showing that it's important, and blurred, showing that it's a hidden element that will be revealed in the near future?

And why would the soul have ended up in Error's threads? It's not hard to imagine, Error has a whole gallery of souls in his Anti-Void. He'd clearly be able to wander into an empty AU at random and find it on the floor, going, "Oh, that's a pretty one, why don't I add it to my collection?"

But what I like most about this theory is everything it would involve:

It would mean that Ink could get his soul back at the end of Underverse, bringing to a close his character development. See him finally come to terms with his feelings and get his soul back so that he can feel for himself, freely, accepting what that involve and facing once and for all the suffering he has ostensibly been running away from...

It would mean that finally, there's a reason why Ink live even without a soul in his body, because well, that's something I've always wondered about his character! His soul has been extracted from his body, but his body is still moving, and lives only on the emotions provided by the ink in his vials, like Kris in Deltarune when he rips out his soul.

It would mean that, come on, he might be able to recover a viable memory?

And above all... It would mean that Error had the opprtunity to kill Ink for good FROM THE BEGINNING and that he was incapable of doing it just because he didn't know it was his 🤣 !!!! And THAT is handsome!

Unless he'd simply forgotten he had it, which is... Clearly possible coming from Error.

The only problem with this theory is that, in Ink's comic, he doesn't just rip it off his body... He's tearing it apart. The soul completely crumbles to dust. So canonically speaking, it's impossible.

That said, it's a detail that can easily be overlooked if you're keen to incorporate the idea into a story, especially as Underverse never set out to make complete canon.

So why not?

In any case, if this theory is wrong in Underverse, I think it's still a great Headcanon ^^

Quand j'écoutais la chanson "Broken Truce" mon regard avait glissé sur cette âme sans m'y attarder. Je me disais que c'était juste un cœur un peu bizarre comme tant d'autres qu'on trouve avec les différents OC's qu'imaginent les Créateurs... Mais le jour où mon cerveau à enfin tilté que c'était pas normal, elle m'a beaucoup interrogée...

Primo : tiens, c'est bizarre... Une âme étrange recouverte de noir dans une image illustrant une chanson dans une websérie qui a l'habitude de jouer sur les mots et les images pour sous-entendre des indices... montrée direct au premier plan, floue qui plus est, intéressant, non ?

Segundo : j'ai vérifié dans la série et je n'ai jamais trouvé dans les fils d'Error d'autres âmes que les normales, des âmes de monstres et des âmes rouge de Détermination. Même pas des âmes d'humain comme Gentillesse, Patience, Justice, etc.

Tertio : Jakei est une personne qui fait attention aux détails. Étant donnée qu'elle anime toute seule sa série et que c'est un travail de titan, elle a pris l'habitude de ne pas encombrer ses plans de détails inutiles. Alors pourquoi elle fouterait une âme bizarre LÀ ?

C'est là que je me suis dit : non. Cette âme a un sens. Mais à qui pourrait-elle être ? Et pourquoi serait-elle en possession d'Error ?

Il existe plein de personnages dont l'âme est sombre et un peu bizarre... Error, X-Gaster, Fatal!Error, Fresh, Nightmare...

Premièrement, même si elle y ressemble, ça ne peut pas être celle de Nightmare vu que son âme est une pomme. De toute manière les câbles d'Error n'ont aucun effet sur lui, et puis surtout bah... Ça n'aurait aucun sens ni aucun intérêt scénaristique qu'elle serait là.

L'âme d'Error alors ? Après tout c'est un être corrompu d'un certain côté, et puis on parle tout de même d'une apparition dans une chanson parlant de sa relation avec Ink. Mais en admettant qu'il en aie une... Elle serait glitchée et très certainement pas si différente des âmes de monstres basique. Pareil pour Fatal.

X-Gaster a son âme en sa possession et de toute manière elle ne ressemble pas à ça...

Fresh, son âme est directement le parasite...

Voilà ma théorie : l'âme qui est dans les fils d'Error est celle de Ink. Observons la : elle est couverte d'une sorte de liquide noirâtre aux reflets bleuté. Le liquide noir est très souvent associé à la haine, ou la souffrance. Et sinon, à l'encre tout simplement. Tandis que le bleu, que ce soit de manière générale ou dans Underverse 0.7, est plutôt associé à la tristesse. Tristesse et souffrance, en un concentré tellement fort que ça a eu un impact sur l'apparence même de l'âme. À savoir les émotions que devait ressentir Ink au moment où il s'est destitué de son essence... Ink qui souffre d'un gros déni par rapport à cette émotion représentée par le bleu vu que c'est la seule qui est toujours pleine, donc ça coïncide. Et à qui serait cette âme sinon ? Pourquoi Jakei l'aurait-elle dessinée dans CETTE vidéo spécifiquement ? Une chanson qui parle justement de Ink et d'Error ? Pourquoi en premier plan, montrant que cela a de l'importance, et floutée, montrant que c'est un élément caché qui sera révélé dans un futur proche ?

Pourquoi l'âme se serait retrouvée dans les fils d'Error ? Pas compliqué à imaginer, Error possède une galerie entière d'âmes dans son Anti-Void. Il serait clairement capable de se balader dans un AU vide au hasard et la trouver par terre en mode : «Oh, tiens, elle est jolie celle-là, et si je l'ajoutais à ma collection ?»

Mais ce qui me plaît le plus avec cette théorie, c'est tout ce que cela impliquerait :

Ça voudrait dire que Ink pourrait récupérer son âme à la fin de la série, concluant en beauté son développement de personnage qui le poussait à assumer enfin ses sentiments et récupérer son âme pour ressentir par lui-même, librement, en acceptant ce que ça implique et en affrontant une bonne fois pour toute la souffrance qu'il a ostensiblement fuie...

Ça voudrait dire que finalement, il y a une raison pour laquelle Ink est encore vivant même sans âme dans son enveloppe corporelle, parce que bon, c'est quand même quelque chose que je me suis toujours demandée sur son personnage ! Il a son âme extraite de son corps mais son corps est encore en mouvement, et ne vit que par les émotions procurées par l'encre de ses fioles. Ça s'est déjà vu dans des éléments canons, quand Kris de Deltarune il s'arrache l'âme.

Ça voudrait dire que, allez, si ça se trouve, il pourrait récupérer une mémoire viable ?

Et surtout... Ça voudrait dire qu'Error avait DEPUIS LE DÉBUT l'occasion de tuer Ink pour de bon et qu'il était pas fichu de le faire parce qu'il était pas au courant que c'était la sienne 🤣 !!! Et ÇA, c'est trop fort !

À moins qu'il aurait tout simplement oublié qu'il l'avait en sa possession, ce qui est clairement possible venant d'Error.

Le seul problème qui vient à l'encontre de cette théorie, c'est que dans le Comic de Ink, il ne fait pas que se l'arracher à son corps... Il se la déchire. L'âme tombe complètement en poussière. Donc canoniquement parlant, c'est impossible.

Cela dit, c'est un détail qui peut être facilement négligé si on a envie d'intégrer cette idée à une histoire, surtout qu'Underverse n'a jamais eu la prétention de faire du canon complet.

Donc après tout pourquoi pas ?

Dans tous les cas, si cette théorie est fausse dans Underverse, je trouve que ça reste un super Headcanon ^^
