Ooh any video essay recommendations? No pressure

anonnn anonn do you know what you've startedddddd O___O

ok so, one of my most favorite most amazing interests is youtube commentary and video essays(i made a categorization spreadsheet of video essay/commentary channels). hopefully you arent asking for horror-based video essays because i do not watch those. my favorite video essays are hours long deep dives into wonderful media, or philosophical discussions. (not to be pretentious, im not saying one is better than the other)

so.. heres my number one reccs:

when i made that post i was watching Harry Potter by Shaun on YT<< really good breakdown of the many things societally iffy about the books, JKs writing, and JKs ideals its great check it out :3

literally anything by Ladyknightthebrave she is an amazing and lowkey underrated master of video essays about shows and movies. some of my all time favorites are her cowboy bebop video essay << goes in depth about the music aspect of the show as well as the creator, themes in the show, and overall messages. Her most recent one about Andor is also amazing, her analysis of its politics is very very pleasant and well constructed. Overall i just love her style my gods. She covers a lot of holocaust media as she is jewish, but she handles social issues so carefully>> talked about ann australian show and included a section on aboriginal rep, consulted Latine people for Andor analysis, fully worked to pronounce the japanese names when discussing the production of cowboy bebop, instead of joking about it or just ignoring it, has consulted many holocaust experts for a few of her videos, includes quotes from poetry, books about political theory and philosophy etc etc. please just check her outt

Ok, so imma rant a bit bout Gary Jimmy bc I’m bored lol

So, I remember watching an yet vid about bully, then I saw this one comment talking about ‘what if Jimmy actually liked Gary, and thought they were friends’ or something along that line, and I’m ngl that’s kinda sad.

So it just gave me an idea that Jimmy actually might have, yk, wanted to be friends.

Maybe he thought that Gary was just some egotistical, chummy guy who just wanted to be friends and chill together. And THINK ABOUT IT. Gary is legit the “first friend” he ever made in that school. And as the missions go on, you can see that they’re developing a friendship.

Especially in the beta version of that one Halloween mission, you could see that legit both bonded with each other (and likes watching Pete get tortured too) And not to mention, Gary legit gets Jimmy a COSTUME for Halloween.

And all this makes it sadder bc, then you realize, Gary never liked Jimmy in the first place. Their friendship was never real to him. Bc in that last mission of chapter 1, Jimmy sounded shocked that Gary was never friends with him bc he actually thought they were best friends. And then Gary just reveals that he only wanted to become “friends”, just to get close enough to manipulate him and shit.

I dunno if I seem like a dumbass for ranting bout this cuz I CANNOT write for the life of me, so yea lol.

my personal headcanon is that after gary starts taking his meds he’s still a little crazy but in a wacky conspiracy theorist kind of way instead of taking over the school again

so i made a gary headcanon post like forever ago but i just sort of didnt believe in what i wrote,,,,, im gonna make one that i think fits better but im totally simplifying it because im tired.

First off, being his partner is like,,,,, just kind of being a pet in the non weird way. hes always focused on something else but he has occasional time to maybe give you a kiss or give you a hug as a flaunt but you dont really... Know eachother like that

You guys are usually seperated at night. Cuddles dont exist because its judt not appealling to him. He doesn't know the importance of PHYSICALLY loving his partner. his parents maybe gave the occasional kiss but thats all he saw to learn from,,,,

And obviously, being a teenage boy he'd think of a partner as something that can be used for certain purpose, you know what im saying here, but my point is he just,,,,,, doesnt get the emotional part about it

He thinks emotion stuff is just maybe,, crying or getting really mad, he doesnt consider it to be an airy feeling in his chest or a flip in his stomach. He doesnt really take a momwnt to think about what could be so important about taking a second for eye contact, or buying flowers or at the very least writing a note.

And so, most days usually end with him walking you back to the dorms, arm around your shoulder..... But theres just no talking going on. How is he meant to talk to you, really? If he cant read his own emotion, how will he onow how to read yours in all honesty? What id he said something too edgy, he heard of breakups happening over jokes gone too far, and he knows for sure breakups are bad..... But thats kind of it.

Itd be different if it was long time friends into lovers, but i dont see gary waiting more than a week or two to ask someone out. Thats what i mean, he would sort of rush in without really knowing anything about his partner... Its almost middle school stuff in a way, only lasting a month or maybe even less because he really just,, kinda cant communicate

Besides American pop culture such as metal, is Miko a fan of the more traditional aspects of Japanese culture at all?

Hmm, this is a tricky question for me because I'm a born and raised American hapa. My half-Asian is Viet.

A lot of my thoughts for Miko were formed by conversations with a few Japanese exchange students, YouTube, Japanese language classes, online information, and what I would have liked to see from the show.

I'm going to be missing a lot of cultural context from a native perspective.

(That or I'm reading way too deep into this ask lol)

I really wish that we had more instances of culture clash or misunderstandings because it could have provided more depth to everyone by opening new dialogue and provided more context of the lore and character backgrounds.

As a character, Miko Nakadai comes off more like an American-born or as someone who's very comfortable in the U.S. from long-term exposure. Perhaps she has relatives in a different state? But then that opens more questions than answers. (It doesn't matter obsessed you're into a country or culture, the first hand experience is a shock.)

And it doesn't help she feels slap-dash in a way. She's vague in the sense that she has a lot of disconnected traits that don't really match up what we were given as viewers. It really isn't a surprise that she's a polarizing character.

Concept wise, the creators pulled a lot of inspiration from Harajuku fashion, so the colorful punk aesthetic does make sense in hindsight with the elements of Visual Kei and Kawaii. But that particular tidbit was released in the Transformers: Art of Prime book.

(As of now, it's nearly $5,000 on Amazon, but we have lovely people who may or may not share some pages online.)

It would have been so great if the show committed to the Japanese exchange student bit by giving more information about Miko's background besides her parents living in Tokyo. I know I made a comment about her parents are like Tatsu and Miku from Way of the Househusband, but that would have provided so much context on Miko's wildness and complete recklessness because the Vegas Effect can only explain so much. (It would make so much sense on how she went for the damn axe to wield against Soundwave! No hesitation from that girl!)

Shoot, even her favorite band, Slash Monkeys, is a Bulgarian rock band! There is nothing wrong with that, but give me/us a bone! Something minor, like a throwaway line about Japanese rock bands that did popular anime openings. (Y'all remember the grip the Big 3 had on our collective throats? Plus, the granddaddy of them all: Dragonball.) That could have built rapport, delved into cultural differences, and been a feel-good moment as the kids showed the 'bots different anime via movie night.

Bottom line, she confuses me on the same level as Orion Pax conundrum, so I just like doing things to make things make sense.

Going to an anime con today, so I'm gonna rant a little.

Let's just say, you and your friends have decided to go to the upcoming anime con that was in town. You guys meet up, dress up, get everything ready. Making your way there, you all talk about what other cosplayers you might see, which ones would be your favorite, etc.

Arriving, you pay for your ticket and enter, and you're met with shops and booths open, artists selling art, and many many more people, dressed up or simply enjoying the place.

You go around, buy a few expensive things maybe. And then...you see some full out war geared military men!!!?? Like, just imagine seeing someone dressing up as these??? 😫

I don't know if it's just me, but just simply seeing something you really like, or something you're really into, it makes you happy (no duh).

Stans Say Stol-Ass Would Be A Gary Sue If He Actually Demonstrated He Was A Demon Lord While Ignoring A Real Gary Sue Is A Character That The Story Puts Too Much Importance On And Treats As They Can't Do Wrong

It's been problem in this series where demon lords like Stolas are treated like wimps when they ae supposed to be stronger than any sinner. However, the stans think that would make im a gary sue instead of living up to his hype of being stronger than Alastor. What actually makes him a Gary Sue is that the story puts too much importance on him to the point it's annoying. It also tries to protect him from being seen as being in the wrong and says he's always been a sweet bean that can do no wrong and puts his other faults on others. It's what makes him annoying because he's shoved into our face and he want time to breathe from how much the narrate bends over for him from his treatment of his daughter, wife, and Blitzo. And doesn't help his stans try to excuse him for his shittiness.

I think about Roach. I hold him so gently in my hands, offering him a soft touch. Reprieve from the bloodshed and the gunfire. I allow him to sit. I allow him to rest. When the time is right I bring him to a field and lay him down. This is where he must be. This is where he will rest. Buried under flowers that are nurtured by the remains of him and his lover. The field has never looked so healthy. The flowers have never bloomed so brightly. Roach is gone, but his body is returned to the earth. His body is left in the care of the trees and the flowers and the grass. His soul entangled forever with his lover, in the same way that their bodies remain together.

When the time is right. I bring another to the field. He did not die here. He did not die with them. Yet his soul is just as entwined as theirs is. His soul belongs to them and his heart had been set on finding them. On returning to them. So, in his rest, I return him to their side.

I let them sleep. I let them rest together, waiting until their time comes again. Until they will wake in a new life as new people with the same names and the same faces. And perhaps they will meet the same fate here. Perhaps they will rest together again in a field of flowers nurtured by their corpses. Roots growing between their ribs. It doesn't matter. They live again. They have another chance. Perhaps they will find each other. Perhaps they won't. It doesn't matter. They are still entwined. Their souls know the other. And, at the end of it all, they will find themselves together again. Resting in a field of flowers.

Idk why but I like to think that Gary, while being a “normal human being” has a combination of things about him that are both very unsettling, and just mildly unsettling, and the more of them you notice the more inhuman he seems

Staring off strong in the very unsettling category, his eyes have black screlas with white irises (he covers them with shades most of the time) buuut he also has three eyes- you probably didn’t notice the third because he’s able to make it look like a tattoo, but if you’re observant you can see it blink on occasion

Sure he has super sharp teeth but upon closer inspection he also has just- too many. Like. No one should have that many teeth. And when he smiles his skin stretches juuussst a little too much and once you see it you can’t unsee it

His facial hair is actually probably the most normal thing about him, but, there’s like, no undertone to the pigmentation of it. Like, there’s supposed to be an undertone but there isn’t one (since we don’t really know his actual hair color I’m kinda leaving this up to peoples interpretation but in my head his hair is just- pitch black. Which like isn’t humanly possible)

His nails are long and sharp but his hands are also just.. off. Sure he’s in his fifties, but even at that age they seem too boney. His fingers are also just- longer?? Than normal??

He’s really tall. Like obviously tall people aren’t that odd but I mean he’s REALLY tall. Like why are you that large good sir. (I can’t decide so let’s say his height is within the range of 6’8” to 7’0”)

Despite all this he’s also really damn strong and it always throws people off because hey, why is the tall lanky boney fifty year old that strong that’s not how this is supposed to work (I imagine this was John’s thought process as he watched Gary literally HURL his trident, which is taller than him by several inches, across an entire ROOM)

He’s almost entirely covered in robes (or head to toe business attire when he needs to go out) so these are basically all the things your average every day business associate, acolyte or terrified preist will notice, but I mean there’s more things about him that are off- that is a post for another time

So I just got into Bully recently, and I've really grown to like Gary, as someone who was considered to have behavioral problems in high school, I can relate to him a lot, and it kinda annoys me when people dumb him down or make him seem like some evil gay guy, like no problem with people thinking he's queer, but he's not evil, like I know he's a video game character but think about what that would feel like, to be 15-16 and feel like everyone is against you, that having friends is a sign of weakness, feeling a constant need to be at the top, feeling angry at everyone around you, it just seems to me like he's got bpd or something. Like feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on any of this, as I said I'm very very new to the game, but to me he's just a scared kid acting aggressive to protect himself
