Ooh any video essay recommendations? No pressure

ok so, one of my most favorite most amazing interests is youtube commentary and video essays(i made a categorization spreadsheet of video essay/commentary channels). hopefully you arent asking for horror-based video essays because i do not watch those. my favorite video essays are hours long deep dives into wonderful media, or philosophical discussions. (not to be pretentious, im not saying one is better than the other)

so.. heres my number one reccs:

when i made that post i was watching Harry Potter by Shaun on YT<< really good breakdown of the many things societally iffy about the books, JKs writing, and JKs ideals its great check it out :3

literally anything by Ladyknightthebrave she is an amazing and lowkey underrated master of video essays about shows and movies. some of my all time favorites are her cowboy bebop video essay << goes in depth about the music aspect of the show as well as the creator, themes in the show, and overall messages. Her most recent one about Andor is also amazing, her analysis of its politics is very very pleasant and well constructed. Overall i just love her style my gods. She covers a lot of holocaust media as she is jewish, but she handles social issues so carefully>> talked about ann australian show and included a section on aboriginal rep, consulted Latine people for Andor analysis, fully worked to pronounce the japanese names when discussing the production of cowboy bebop, instead of joking about it or just ignoring it, has consulted many holocaust experts for a few of her videos, includes quotes from poetry, books about political theory and philosophy etc etc. please just check her outt

so we have confirmation that veilguard was made in a year and a half. that's understandably such a time crunch and must have put unimaginable stress on the dev team, especially with the mass effect team coming in partway through. I do have empathy for the writers. no one deserves to lose their job at a time like this, especially not after such a roller coaster of a development cycle and after working on this series for so many years.

however.

obsidian made kotor 2, a game praised for its writing and many fans' favorite of the pair, in 14 months. they then proceeded to make fallout: new vegas, again praised for its writing and hailed as a shining example of video game storytelling, in 18 months. a lot of content was ultimately cut from both of these games, but in kotor's case, it was lovingly added back in by fans over the years despite not being especially easy to mod because the fans were so passionate about what they already had that they wanted to enhance it. these games are both known to be kinda janky as well. but the games at their core have satisfying stories, characters, and an incredible overall narrative that feels satisfying and fits with their respective universes, maintains respect for the established lore and characters, and is tonally consistent with the atmosphere and themes of previous games. hell, dragon age 2 was also made in about the same time frame based on what I could find, and as much as the assets were reused there and it could be occasionally glitchy, it remains one of the best bioware narratives with some of their most memorable characters, and it accomplished that while both keeping to the lore and vibe of the dragon age series AND expanding it into new territory.

I am aware that there are differences like engines, era, expectations, pushes from management, etc, but I'm mostly focusing on the writing and the narrative team's priorities. I wouldn't care if they reused assets to save time and money. I wouldn't care if a couple side quests had to go, or some character arcs were a little less polished, or some side characters were cut entirely. honestly I would have preferred it if some of the characters WERE cut entirely. if you're just going to spit on all of her character development, don't bring morrigan back. cut some of that banter in the lighthouse and let me talk to my companions properly. cut that goddamn arena and put those resources toward fleshing out the lords of fortune. even if the rest of the team wanted that entire faction cut so they could focus on other things, cut the fucking faction.

I will never apologize for rightfully criticizing the choices the writers made while making this game. the game talks to you - both you as the player AND you as the character - like you're stupid. repeating things over and over again just to make sure you Really Get It, dumbing down so many aspects of its own lore, reducing any kind of conflict to therapy speak or an HR meeting, etc. rook has no characterization to speak of and their dialogue and tone is wildly inconsistent depending on which npc you're speaking to at the time. why is rook clever enough to do playful, flirty hunter/prey banter with davrin but also too awkward to properly flirt with harding? the one canonically nonbinary neurodivergent companion frequently expresses themselves by growling and roaring and their individuality and competency are repeatedly undermined by their own writer's narrative decisions and banter. the game disregards its own lore and at times straight up contradicts itself. it's pretty, but lacks substance, and fails to live up to the standards a lot of us had for a dragon age game.

I won't pretend I know everything that went on behind the scenes but I think a year and a half is more than enough time to write a better narrative than what we got, even with some pushback from another dev team. I've seen countless thinkpieces by fans who have come up with solutions for plot holes and fixes for the overall narrative, and these are people who came up with this stuff in a matter of a few days or weeks, or sometimes just a few hours. you can't blame me for thinking veteran bioware writers - who SHOULD know their own lore by now - could have come up with something better than this in that amount of time, regardless of the limitations. choices were made and things were prioritized that shouldn't have been. I do not forgive the writers, EA, or bioware execs for this, and I will continue to criticize the responsible parties for the product we were sold, which includes criticizing the writers for shoddy work.

tl;dr: I don't believe the writing team made the best of the time they had and I fault them for that. but maybe that's on me for hoping that a game with its narrative led by weekes and epler would have actually been good in the first place.

it is not that serious. if someone is mainly interested in a media because the characters are attractive, then that is none of my fucking business, nor is it any of yours. you annoyed by someones confusion? inform them of the correct information so they're no longer lost or spreading misinfo. it is that easy. stop shitting on people for what drew them to something, especially when it doesnt effect you.

you are allowed go be frustrated by people completely changing a character, yes! you're allowed to have those feelings. you're allowed to be annoyed by people ignoring canon information, and not looking into it.

you are allowed to make character analysis posts, and give people consensual advice. privately rant to your friends all you want if its upsetting to you. i have done the same, and i will admit that some fanon characterization pisses me off.

however, if you are merely hating someone because of the reason they chose to play a game? thats fucking stupid and petty. harassing and sending death threats to people for any of these reasons? that's just disgusting. control yourselves.

I don't know if this was asked before, but are you familiar with the trolls cartoons series TBGO and trollstopia? Some acknowledge them, some don't. but in the end they have great info and addition to the trolls universe and worldbuilding that we can pick to consider canon or not. Plus some characters and storylines re really entertaining.

I've seen a number of episodes of tbgo and only the first few episodes of trollstopia. I like how Poppy and Smidge are written in the first series. It's cool actually seeing Poppy in her role as queen of the village, since the movies always whisk her away from there.

But honestly I don't consider anything in the two series canon to the movies. Not only do some things break the movie lore/continuity, I just don't like the worldbuilding direction and the concept/creature design that's unique to the show.

It has affected my art in ways I will never understand, again anyway I wanted to draw them as mobian’s and I was like wait what kind of mobian would they be and that was a whole challenge itself because I don’t know the first thing about species in Sonic besides from like the really popular guys AND THEN I couldn’t figure out what sea creatures were cannon in the Sonic universe like I saw the manta ray and the squid but sponges?? Nothing, nada, zilch. AND WORSE OF ALL I couldn’t think of anything to represent a sponge??? So I made him a dog!! Danny is a jackle, Timmy is a fox and jimmy is a bat, for obvious reasons. Their main colors (the ones I use at least) are their fur color

I realize now that I made a pattern with their clothes, unintentional yes but it works.

so i made a gary headcanon post like forever ago but i just sort of didnt believe in what i wrote,,,,, im gonna make one that i think fits better but im totally simplifying it because im tired.

First off, being his partner is like,,,,, just kind of being a pet in the non weird way. hes always focused on something else but he has occasional time to maybe give you a kiss or give you a hug as a flaunt but you dont really... Know eachother like that

You guys are usually seperated at night. Cuddles dont exist because its judt not appealling to him. He doesn't know the importance of PHYSICALLY loving his partner. his parents maybe gave the occasional kiss but thats all he saw to learn from,,,,

And obviously, being a teenage boy he'd think of a partner as something that can be used for certain purpose, you know what im saying here, but my point is he just,,,,,, doesnt get the emotional part about it

He thinks emotion stuff is just maybe,, crying or getting really mad, he doesnt consider it to be an airy feeling in his chest or a flip in his stomach. He doesnt really take a momwnt to think about what could be so important about taking a second for eye contact, or buying flowers or at the very least writing a note.

And so, most days usually end with him walking you back to the dorms, arm around your shoulder..... But theres just no talking going on. How is he meant to talk to you, really? If he cant read his own emotion, how will he onow how to read yours in all honesty? What id he said something too edgy, he heard of breakups happening over jokes gone too far, and he knows for sure breakups are bad..... But thats kind of it.

Itd be different if it was long time friends into lovers, but i dont see gary waiting more than a week or two to ask someone out. Thats what i mean, he would sort of rush in without really knowing anything about his partner... Its almost middle school stuff in a way, only lasting a month or maybe even less because he really just,, kinda cant communicate

Besides American pop culture such as metal, is Miko a fan of the more traditional aspects of Japanese culture at all?

Hmm, this is a tricky question for me because I'm a born and raised American hapa. My half-Asian is Viet.

A lot of my thoughts for Miko were formed by conversations with a few Japanese exchange students, YouTube, Japanese language classes, online information, and what I would have liked to see from the show.

I'm going to be missing a lot of cultural context from a native perspective.

(That or I'm reading way too deep into this ask lol)

I really wish that we had more instances of culture clash or misunderstandings because it could have provided more depth to everyone by opening new dialogue and provided more context of the lore and character backgrounds.

As a character, Miko Nakadai comes off more like an American-born or as someone who's very comfortable in the U.S. from long-term exposure. Perhaps she has relatives in a different state? But then that opens more questions than answers. (It doesn't matter obsessed you're into a country or culture, the first hand experience is a shock.)

And it doesn't help she feels slap-dash in a way. She's vague in the sense that she has a lot of disconnected traits that don't really match up what we were given as viewers. It really isn't a surprise that she's a polarizing character.

Concept wise, the creators pulled a lot of inspiration from Harajuku fashion, so the colorful punk aesthetic does make sense in hindsight with the elements of Visual Kei and Kawaii. But that particular tidbit was released in the Transformers: Art of Prime book.

(As of now, it's nearly $5,000 on Amazon, but we have lovely people who may or may not share some pages online.)

It would have been so great if the show committed to the Japanese exchange student bit by giving more information about Miko's background besides her parents living in Tokyo. I know I made a comment about her parents are like Tatsu and Miku from Way of the Househusband, but that would have provided so much context on Miko's wildness and complete recklessness because the Vegas Effect can only explain so much. (It would make so much sense on how she went for the damn axe to wield against Soundwave! No hesitation from that girl!)

Shoot, even her favorite band, Slash Monkeys, is a Bulgarian rock band! There is nothing wrong with that, but give me/us a bone! Something minor, like a throwaway line about Japanese rock bands that did popular anime openings. (Y'all remember the grip the Big 3 had on our collective throats? Plus, the granddaddy of them all: Dragonball.) That could have built rapport, delved into cultural differences, and been a feel-good moment as the kids showed the 'bots different anime via movie night.

Bottom line, she confuses me on the same level as Orion Pax conundrum, so I just like doing things to make things make sense.

I actually need to get this off my chest cause I'm so sad and I feel ROBBED. Like... I feel robbed over the monarch having zero reaction at 24s death.

Okay so like, proven to be shown 24 and monarch knew each other even before the whole "mighty monarch" ordeal. They actually got along pretty well at that, 24 even went out of his way to take the monarch's position so he could take a hit on Dr,gf. Yeah he did it to be monarch's number 1, ( homosexuals sighs... ) anyways but it still counts for something right? Even after that 24 was well ... Still the number 24 so he still most definitely remembers 24. He got denied only because Dr,gf said number 9 was the one with the starring problem. Monarch was down to have him join but that good pussy made my boi zoom 💔💔 okay lemme stop..., but 24 had to join anyways at some point because he was working with the monarch before 21 even joined, so I wonder how he did end up working for him again sad we didn't get a scene for that but we still got that pretty cute touchy-feely fuck eyes one so I'm at least happy about that. The crumbs of Mon24...

I forgot what season but 21 brings up 24 being bed rested because of the moppets, monarch forgot 24 for some reason?? Literally sir how dare you. But 21 actively reminded him, and monarch did say he liked him in some sort. Also when Dr,gf brings up the fact that 24 started a fight with the mobbets and monarch even comes up in his defense and honestly doesn't believe 24 would even start one nonetheless do something about it.

But I would like to just think monarch didn't have a reaction because he was so dizzy and out of place from spinning all over the place and throwing up on himself. This might just be me being a total delusional mon24 shipper but ugh it just makes me so upset for zero reason at all.
