I know it was only on the UK blu-ray (and even then, limited edition) but Scorsese's commentary for Goncharov puts SO MUCH into perspective! The influence of Luchino Visconti, Bernardo Bertolucci, and Franco Zeffirelli is so CLEAR! Martin Scorsese bringing these Italian sensibilities to the material really brings out the sensual side of Ivan Goncharov's original novel. Not to discredit Matteo JWHJ0715's script (which is gorgeous if you haven't read, I have a friend who works in archive shit in Europe who sent me a couple of pictures of it 😍) but the direction and the production design really make the film FEEL sensual.

The Gangster The Cop The Devil is a film that in no way needed to go so hard, and yet it did. You may think this is an overexaggeration on my part, but while watching this my friends and I very much did start a counter for how many sick moments different characters had.
The film's premise basically revolves around the question "What if the opposing factions from the Departed teamed up to hunt down the bad guy from Death Note," which is to say the movie is a Korean film about a Mobster and a Cop hunting down a serial killer with Daddy issues.
Great premise, pulpy title, solid cast. Nobody was asking for anything more from this movie and yet it gives its all. Cinematically basically every single shot in this film was drop dead gorgeous for absolutely no reason other than love of the game. The tone of this film isn't trying to do anything special, and yet it's got 3 standout transitions in the first 20 minutes of the film alone.
There is a lot of great Korean film out there, but if the dense canon overwhelms you to the point that you're googling "at what point do I watch Oldboy?" The Gangster The Cop The Devil is a great place to jump in, with a low barrier of entry and a high level of quality.

Scarface (1932)
"Presumably the last of the gangster films, on a promise, it is going to make people sorry there won't be any more... Scarface contains more cruelty than any of its predecessors, but there's a squarer for every killing. It uses all the modern artillery tricks ever conceived by imaginative scenario writers who read newspapers and contributes a few more of its own. It bumps off more guys and mixes more blood with rum than most of the past gangster offerings combined. The blows are always softened by judicial preachments and sad endings for the sinners. But the punch is in the violence, the killings, the movies and the success of the cast in giving the director what he wants." (Variety, May 1932 issue)
