Bryan Ansell has passed away at age 68 (11 October 1955 -- 30th December 2023).
Bryan Ansell founded Citadel Miniatures in 1978 in partnership with Games Workshop, and co-wrote the original 1983 Warhammer Fantasy Battles first edition rules with Richard Halliwell and Rick Priestley. He became managing director of Games Workshop in the mid-1980s, and was primary owner of GW until selling his shares in 1991. He also founded Wargames Foundry / Foundry Miniatures, which continues to produce many older Citadel figures among many other ranges.

Vizzik Skour, Prophet of the Great Horned Rat. Probably my favourite mini I've ever painted. I love him, he's like. Quintessentially Grimdark to me. Dark Souls Boss energy

I painted this old school Space Marine in the brightest colours I had. It turned out better than expected.
-
The shoulder pads and helmet are Gauss Blaster Green, shaded with Caliban Green mixed with Lahmian Medium. They are highlighted with Gauss Blaster Green + white.
The body is an Ahriman Blue base, highlighted by blending towards Baharroth Blue, with the final highlight Baharroth Blue mixed with a bit of white.
The pink bits are Vallejo Model Color Pink, which I covered with Volupus Pink. That didn't really have the contrast effect I was going for, so I had to re-highlight with Vallejo Model Color Pink, again mixing in a bit of white for the final highlight.

Fun fact, Citadel Miniatures (the miniatures arm of Games Workshop) did a Sauron miniature uin the 80s, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think I've ever seen a depiction of Sauron like this in anything else.
In a good way I mean, it's really unique! Just this ominous withered cloaked shadow on this horrifying meaty throne of immense power with an unblinking ever-staring burning eye...
...Source for the pics is here, for the record.

🎨Miniature painting (old work, 2000s, Games Workshop LOTR strategic battle game ✨⚔️ ): Elves, mostly from Rivendell (Arwen, Elrohir, Elrond, Glorfindel) and Lórien (Galadriel, Celeborn, Haldir, Lórien Elves), and also Legolas. Among these, the Rivendell Elven Captain, Elrohir and Glorfindel are my most recent work for the late 2000s and very early 2010s.

Still researching classic Rogue Trader dreadnoughts, since I thought it was a good idea to buy 4 more of them. White Dwarf 100 (April 1988) has a long article, "Chapter Approved: Dreadnoughts," with this color spread of Eldar, Imperial, and Ork dreadnought armour. Note the middle row shows Imperial mech suits used by rogue traders, the Imperial Army (later known as the Imperial Guard), and the Legiones Astartes. At this time most suits were just another equipment type that could be issued to any unit and worn by normal soldiers, though the text now describes some Imperial pilots being surgically implanted in their suits.

Army and marines often were depicted side by side.

We see the beginnings of formally differentiating models. You can still mix and match weapon arms like you could from the start, but now there are 3 official named variants: the Deredo (Eddy) has 1 bolt gun and 1 missile launcher, the Furibundus (Fury) has 2 bolt guns and 1 lascannon, and the Contemptor (Chuck) has 4 bolt guns with pairs on both arms.

If anything, that roadmap Krieg tease undersold how much the Death Korps would be getting in the new year. Between the existing tanks and Veteran Guardsmen, this is at least as much of an army as any of the old pewter regiments had in the '90s. Arguably more.

Starting from the top, Lord Marshal Dreir is a great alternative to the Lord Solar for the role of, "general on horse mount," and stands in his stead among any of the classic regimental heroes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And if your gonna have one guy on a horse mount, you really ought to have an entire cavalry charge. I think they might have gone a little ham on the Krieg steeds' claws, though - I liked them better a more like goat hooves, so that they look nearly like horses be not quite. Somebody at the studio clearly decided that's insufficiently brutal.

Combat engineers are another adaptation of an existing Forge World kit that looks great. Loving the little screw drive remote mine, although it looks like it's about twice as big as it ought to be to read better on the tabletop.

Artillery emplacements are big Krieg energy and these new heavy guns certainly deliver. The quad mortar is back again, as are two flavors of cannon and a rocket battery. Wouldn't look at all out of place alongside the classic Basilisk platforms (which, who knows, may still make their way to plastic), or the next entry in the new lineup.
Tumblr media
Classic heavy weapon carriages, once again in the 2nd Edition style. These are all a little bit more in tune with the nostalgic approach to Imperial Guard than the more modern take on the concept found in the Cadian Field Ordnance Battery, and I think helps them to fill a unique niche from the standard heavy weapons teams.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rounding things out are a brand new command squad featuring not one but two Commissars (Lord and cadet), vox, standard and chemyst. I think adapting the quartermaster would have probably been a better pull but they seem to be leaning hard into the harsh environment specialists aspect. That combat accountancy servo skull goes hard, though.
Overall, solid. Very happy to see, and when taken alongside the many Solar Auxilia tanks now or soon to be available, represents one of the most comprehensive updates to a range yet seen.
