The Vanity of Devils is a real book, written by Mikayla Rand and you can find it here on the zon if you feel like looking it up. It's a paranormal romance with demons and other creatures. The author is one of my besties and I love that book so very much.

Max leaned back on her elbows, her eyes never leaving the two little girls playing in the sand a few feet away. She was glad she’d remembered the sun umbrella this time and taken the time to slather everyone with sunscreen. She had gotten sunburned one too many times growing up and didn’t take any chances with anyone’s skin anymore. 

She’d picked up the girls from school with the beach bags already in the trunk, and waved at Steve who had to sit through a few hours of parent-teacher conferences before he joined them for dinner. It was nearly four o’clock yet the sun was still blazing and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. The girls hadn’t come to ask for a snack yet, but Max knew it was only a matter of time.

She grabbed her Kindle from the bag and turned onto her belly, determined to at least finish the chapter she was on. Mikayla Rand’s The Vanity of Devils had been on her TBR for a while and it was really good, but working from home with a six-year-old and an older brother who kept showing up to ask for advice on his love life did not leave a lot of time for reading.

The girls’ chatter made Max pause her reading to listen. She glanced at her daughter and her daughter’s best friend who had made a sand castle and decorated it with shells and ribbons of seaweed. They were each holding a stick they had wrapped with seaweed and tiny shells.

“Yes, and Princess Rosalinda is so happy to see him.”

“And he gives her a letter from his favorite niece, saying she will be there for the royal wedding. She’s coming soon with Queen Maxine and King Lucas, and they’re bringing presents.”

“Yay, I love presents!”

“Then Prince William gives her a great big hug then lets her ride on his horse with his helper person so he can go find the king.”

“Oh, the king missed him a lot while he was gone. And Princess Rosalinda is glad she’s not in the room when they start kissing because, ew, kissing is gross.”

“So gross. You know, I saw my mom and dad kissing the other morning when Dad was leaving for his work. Yuk.”

Max bit her lip to stop herself from snickering and checked the time on her phone. “Girls, would you like a snack?”

Roscoe and Rosie dropped their embellished sticks and ran to Max, happily drinking the water she offered them before digging into the food she’d packed for them.

A hand landed on Max’s shoulder, causing her to choke on her sip of iced tea.

“Uncle Billy!!!” Roscoe shrieked, jumping into his arms like she hadn’t seen him a few days ago.

“How are my favorite girls?” Billy asked, putting Roscoe down after a twirling hug and sitting next to Max. He pushed his sunglasses off his nose and listened to the two little girls giving him a run down of their day. 

Max noticed they didn’t mention the castle they’d built or the story they’d made up.

“Uncle Billy, can we go for a swim?” Roscoe asked, trying her luck with him since Max had told her she wasn’t getting in the water.

“Yeah, just give me a minute to catch up with your mom, okay? You girls go back to your sandcastle, I’ll be right there.”

The girls happily went back to their game, and Max turned to her brother, waiting for him to take a sip of his water to ask, “So, you and Steve are getting married, I hear?”

Kip and Penelope to run off. After the match ends, they return with Miro who beats up Chuck and Trent. After a commercial break, Miro/Kip have a tag match (squash) against Lee Johnson/Sean Maluta and then do a promo about the broken arcade cabinet.

He asks for an apology from Orange and then immediately slaps him anyway. Best Friends get mad on his behalf but Orange casually says everythings cool and walks with the two of them offscreen. Everyone is confused at how chill he is.

It's been a very long time (I have no excuses and I'm sure no one is interested) and I've been far more active on Twitter, and I'm late to the game either way, but I just had to announce Wazawa-sensei's newest manga, Adashino Kishokan! Someone's already started translating it, so I'm hoping to direct fellow Mononokean fans over if they're interested!

“Mana Bang Hamid kak?” tanya ku yang duduk memegang sebuah buku nota.

“Kerja N.. Ke hutan katanya. Pergi pagi tadi. Tak tahu bila balik. Selalunya adalah sebulan macam dulu-dulu..” jawab Kak Esah sambil memilin lengan baju kurungnya.

“Ohh, abah N juga. Kata abah komunis banyak kak.. Takut juga ya,” kata N menyeringai menampakkan gigi putihnya bersusun.

“Yalah.. Risau juga akak,” kata Kak Esah, “Menyusahkan orang aja komunis ni.”

“Tak apa kak, sekurang-kurangnya Kak di sini ramai tentangga. Tak lah bongeng dan sunyi,” kata N.

Makcik Timah lalu memimpin dua orang anaknya.

“Ai N, buat apa borak dengan Esah ni?” tanya makcik Timah sedikit mengah, dia baru balik dari membeli belah.

Dia senyum melirik dan N faham sebab baru mengongkeknya tengahari tadi. N juga senyum. Nampak Makcik Timah mencemek bibirnya sambil melirik ke arah Esah. Makcik Timah berlalu dengan anak-anaknya. Aku memerhati wajah Kak Esah. Bulu matanya lentik, bibirnya halus merah merekah. Cakapnya lembut.

“Kau belajar betul-betul N.. Jangan sia-siakan peluang kau itu,” nasihat Kak Esah pada N tentang pelajaran.

“Baik kak, saya usahakan. Kena juga jadi orang sebab adik beradik ramai juga, kesian kat abah..” balas N senyum. “Akak kahwin dengan Bang Hamid atas dasar suka sama suka ke kak?”

“Taklahh.. Pilihan orang tua. Orang tua dia masuk meminang, orang tua akak tima sahaja. Maklumlah akak kandas LCE. Jadi apa pilihan akak, orang tua akak suruh kahwinlah,” jawab Kak Esah, “Sudah setahun lebih kami menikah lom lagi akak ngandung.”

Fikiran N melayang.. Dia senyum sendirian. Kak Esah bangun melangkah ke dapurnya lalu keluar semula membawa dua cawan air teh kosong.

“Minum N,” Kak Esah mempelawa dan dia duduk semula.

“Mekasih kak, buat susah aje..”balas N senyum.

“Akak suka borak dengan kau. Walaupun usia kau muda baru 13 tahun tapi kau nampak matang cam orang dewasa. Boleh tukar-tukar pikiran juga,” balas Kak Esah senang.

N teringat.. Teringat ketika N mengintai Bang Hamid menyetubuhi Kak Esah. Game mereka tidak hebat. Tidak adventurous. Biasa jer. Takde jilat menjilat. Bang hamid hanya mengentel puting dan keletit Kak Esah. Kak Esah hanya mengocok batang zakar Bang Hamid yang pendek itu. Bila tegang Bang Hamid menaiki tubuh Kak Esah. What Video Game would the Stranger Things character have been unhealthily obsessed with as a pre-teen? (in a modern world)

Mike - Fortnite. Oh, he stole Karen’s credit card way too many times, so much of Ted’s money has gone into that game, completely unbeknownst to Ted.

Will - I think he liked story-based games. The Last of Us, Life is Strange, Detroit: Become Human. Games that aren’t necessarily super hard but aren’t particularly super easy either, and they tell a story!

Dustin - He was probably a Roblox kid, let’s be honest. I also think he probably really liked LEGO games.

Lucas - Any and all Pokemon games, he has an encyclopaedia of Pokemon in his head at this point.

Nancy - Definitely put hundreds of hours into Animal Crossing. She’s super intense about it. She’s got a whole business running on Nook-a-zon, she tracks her turnip prices like they’re life or death. Her island is very nice, though. Proper cottagecore.

Steve - So, so much Call of Duty. He’s been in the wars in the voice chat, he had heard every insult and slur in existence before the age of 12.

Erica - Moviestar planet, club penguin, neopets. Basically any game that’s online rather than downloaded, probably.

Max - She’s sunk a lot of time into Mario games. She’s the kid that’s beaten every 2D platformer in existence that no one had the energy to. She 100%s them and then never plays them again.

Robin - A lot of Minecraft. Like so many hours of playing and yet she somehow still sucks at the game. She probably spent most of her time on Mineplex or Hypixel, like don’t ask her about survival mode, she couldn’t tell you shit.

Eddie - Skyrim. If you did the math he probably spent about 70% of his waking hours in middle school playing Skyrim.

Dungeon Meshi Season 1 EP 5 review

Episode 5 of the anime came out and we got to see Kabru!!! My boy Kabru!!! Oh right there was other stuff after the first five minutes.

KABRU THOUGH!!!

I don't actually have a lot to say about this episode. I thought it was competent, although as always characters standing around and talking, or doing simple tasks like eating, are just not Trigger's strong point.

Has anybody deciphered the language that Kui is using in the backgrounds? SO HAPPY that her glyphs are here now, instead of the Japanese in the first episode. I've tried to figure out what they are, but I'm honestly stumped. Seems like a combination of Norse runes, Greek letters, Cuneiform and Sanskrit...

Was NOT a fan of the way they overdid Kabru scaring Mikbell. It's really not a joke that's even that funny, so I think the lighting change and drama of it was really overselling it. Would have been much better if it was like in the manga, some childish, light-hearted ribbing between friends while they get ready to leave.

Although it was VERY VERY funny, I was also not a fan of the youtube-poop-esque zoom out on Marcille when she sees the treasure bugs. Like Laios' galaxy brain moment, comedic edits like this remind me that I'm watching a TV show, instead of allowing me to be immersed in the historical fantasy world. If I wanted modern jokes I'd be watching an Isekai where the characters are in a video game, not Dungeon Meshi.

I think they could have gotten an equally good laugh just from doing a simple zoom out.

I love the way they're depicting Laios. You can clearly see all the red flags his friends are picking up on and how he might be scary to others, but he's also very sympathetic and sweet.

All the Japanese VA's are doing a great job. I liked Kabru's Japanese voice a little better than his English voice just because I think he did a better job capturing Kabru's dual nature - he started out very sweet and cute, and then dropped his timbre noticeably once he was no longer sweet-talking someone. The English voice actor meanwhile felt like their voice basically stayed the same the entire episode.

THE DUB

This is still the better way to watch the show, the subtitles are SO lacking that they make the story harder to follow. The dub script, meanwhile, does a much better job. I wonder if there's a way to watch it with Japanese audio and the English dub subtitles?

BangZoom continues to make interesting casting decisions that make me VERY curious to see how they're going to handle the elves when they finally arrive.

Kabru, Daya and Kuro are all voiced by black voice actors! Rin's voice actress is Asian American, and Namari's voice actress is nonbinary. They all sound fantastic and I'm excited to hear them develop their characters as the series progresses.

Obviously Kabru isn't black, he's Indian, but Zon also isn't black, so I appreciate casting people of color to play characters of color (?) or at least, characters that are minorities? It feels like that's what they're trying to do.

ON THE OTHER HAND, Daya is very much not a minority or a character of color... I suppose that would be a case of race-blind casting? Which is also a good practice, getting new, underutilized talent into the industry... But obviously not a part of the previous point. Regardless, she sounds great.

Again, REALLY wonder how this will influence their casting decisions with the elves. Wonder if any of this was done with instruction from Trigger or Kui, or if it's 100% BangZoom operating on their own.

phew! finally a weekend where i can set aside enough time to type up The Promised Endwalker Stream-of-Consciousness Post. i finished the base story... a month ago? but work has been busy, and i think tumblr benefits from me being quiet sometimes. anyway, what a ride. when you've been building up to the end of your arc for a decade, you want to hit it like an earthquake, and that's exactly what they did.

i think people love endwalker because it fires on all cylinders. it returns - in both story and vision - to the eorzea we love, and the dev team gets to show off everything they've learned. the dungeons and boss fights are dynamic and imaginative and colorful and bring the game's epic sense of scope to bear. the story callbacks are juicy. the music is orchestral again. we're back home, and we're saving the galaxy. what's better than this?

i love that we go to garlemald. i don't - i mean, you know, i don't like garlemald. i shouldn't have to qualify that. but it's hugely narratively satisfying to see the face of the enemy we've been fighting since the first few hours of ARR. you don't think about them when you're beating them up in castrum centri or ala mhigo. they're star wars bad guys. then you meet them on their own turf. you observe firsthand how they starve and cannibalize their own people to feed their obsession with state power and military strength. the wintry environment makes it seem all the more barren and desperate. my favorite part by far. i wish we'd spent more time there.

actually, on that note:

there is an argument that endwalker should've been two expacs. i've heard similar about stormblood - ala mhigo should've been the whole thing, and doma should've been either patch content or an expac of its own. the prevailing theory is that, after ARR, the devs are afraid of letting arcs run long. i can't speak to that, but i wouldn't have minded, that's for sure!

i won't pretend not to be biased. i've noted in many xiv posts that it hurries through its political plots to get to the magic stuff. i felt more conscious of it in heavensward and especially in stormblood. i made peace with it in endwalker. with dessert this good, who am i to complain? i can do small character drama on my own time. for now, the game wants royce to be a big damn shonen hero, and that can be fun, too.

speaking of characters, urianger and estinien have grown on me. this is the arc where, for me at least, the scions have congealed. they're all good, but with any large cast and custom player character, you tend to form the meatiest bonds with a few specific ones. i think royce appreciates urianger's cooler, more mature head. they're both so formal. he realizes she's someone he can confide in. i think she sees estinien as a gifted, but hotheaded whelp, which i find very funny. patience, child. stop sulking. do your breathing drills.

i love thancred's MGS sequence and in from the cold too. they're stressful, but i love that the team tried, you know what i mean? the fact that you can fight enemies in a pinch makes those duties way more bearable than some other games that experiment with stealth.

all right, i can't avoid referencing spoilers anymore, sorry. there's a sense of classical tragedy to the whole elpis sequence. it's like watching macbeth or hamlet. you know how it's going to end, and you know you're powerless to stop it, but if they'd just made that different choice! but we had to leave eden. the warrior of light had to end up where they are to finish what elpis started. i don't do fate/destiny plots, but this? i'll take it.

i also knew what would happen going into ultima thule and still came away from it moved. it's strong writing. that's all there is to it. sure, the visuals are haunting, but the dialogue has to sell a gauntlet of difficult character moments, and it pulls it off. on the design side, there's some interesting intentional friction that forces you to linger in the zone and sit with its sense of despair. that part where you have to search the empty park for signs of life? oof

with the majority of the MSQ under my belt, i started sniffing around for what else there is to do ingame. i tried ninja. did terribly. i tried sage. did terribly too, but at least that gave me access to the healer role quests, which, ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). the nier raids are gorgeous. i even did the controversial werlyt quests, and terncliff is so cute. i kind of wish we could have another story there!

what's next? i dunno! right now i'm burning through the hildibrand quests before i continue on with endwalker's patch story. the field operation stuff seems interesting to do after the MSQ, in a "hey, you saved the world, but we have more missions for you" way. i've also contracted Triple Triad Collector Disease, so that'll keep me busy for a long time.

all right. one last thing. Real Gamer Moments: i was in a mount-farming party recently, and i said that i sort of collected mounts, but only used the ishgardian chocobo. it's a roleplay thing - it's the chocobo royce took when she ran away from ishgard. one of the party members said "haurchefant would be proud of you." AUGH

I was hearing a lot about the Hardcore WoW challenge & decided to give it a try. I wanted to share some of my thoughts here because I think some of the people who follow this blog might enjoy the experience as well! The post ended up being kind of long so please feel free to ignore if you’re not interested.

For those who don’t know, Hardcore Classic is a fan-made game mode in the same spirit as an ironman challenge. There are several rules but the main ones are 1) character death is permanent 2) you cannot ask for help or group with others (outside of very specific circumstances), and 3) you cannot trade, mail, or use the AH. Everything you use must be found in the world, crafted by you, or bought from a vendor. There is an addon that can be downloaded to verify your run. It can be played on any server, but many people chose to play on the public WoW servers that fans have adopted for the challenge, because you can only complete dungeons and raids with other HC players under the HC rules. At first I thought it sounded nuts, but gave it a shot because I had nothing to lose. I created a character with the exact same class/race as my first WoW character (I was even able to snag the same name), and as I spawned into Mulgore I almost immediately understood the appeal. There were so many other players around doing the same challenge. The game felt shockingly alive because of how active the server was. But what was really amazing was how the hardcore restrictions changed the way I experienced the game & took me back to the first time I ever played.

I have a distinct memory from my first character, a Tauren Druid, and leaving Mulgore for the first time to make the trek to Crossroads through Camp Taurajo. That walk felt so intimidating, seeing level ?? thunder lizards standing off the side of the road. I feel like I probably held my breath until I finally made it to Crossroads. Today, if I were to create a new Tauren on a classic era server, though I would have to make that same walk, I would not feel that fear because the game no longer has that same mystery for me . The thunder lizards are only level 20, and if I die, it’s no big deal to corpse run and try again. But under the Hardcore ruleset, that’s not an option. If I die, that’s it. I found myself making that run with the same level of caution that I gave it during my first ever playthrough, keeping my eyes peeled off both sides of the road. And feeling safe when I finally got to Crossroads. That alone was an amazing feeling to experience again!

As I started to level up in the Barrens, I reached a point where the quests were starting to out level me and decided to make the trek to Silverpine to continue. I was level 13, making my way to the Sepulcher. I was nearly there, and went off path to gather some herbs. Out of nowhere, a Son of Arugal, a level ?? elite, appeared. It was over before I could react and I felt so defeated.

A few days later, I got the motivation to delete the character and begin again. Another Tauren Druid. I leveled my way back to the same point where I left off in the Barrens and thought, either I can play it safe here and grind a level or two, or I can head to Silverpine again and be on my guard this time. I opted for Silverpine to prove to myself I could do it. I got there and completed some quests, constantly watching my back the whole time. As I walk towards a cave I saw him in the distance once again, the Son of Arugal. I noped out of there immediately, ran halfway across the zone and grinded out the few bars I had left to level. As soon as I dinged, I hearthed out of Silverpine for good. It left me excited though, that I was able to face Silverpine once again & learn from my mistake the first time. It was not only exciting to navigate around it, but it made the zones themselves feel like unique places once again, each with their own obstacles & traps.

I’m only level 14 now, and I’m realizing every zone from here on out will likely have it’s own Son of Arugal lurking in the shadows. I doubt I will make it to 60 because I don’t have a ton of underlying knowledge about the world, but for the time being the experience so far has been worth the time. It’ll be painful when my character inevitably dies but at that point I’ll feel okay putting away hardcore mode for a bit.

I don’t intend on writing posts like this in the future, but wanted to share because I know there are so many people who feel nostalgic about the game. This game mode really has the potential to bring some of those feelings back into the game, and at least for the time being, the servers are well populated and feel just as alive as they did back then. Hiroko Mamushi

[This is one of the main NPCs in a one on one game I’m running online for @strawberry-crocodile​. The Therian Institute introduced here is basically Alcatraz for lycanthropes, and I may very well write up more of the characters there as Codex entries throughout the next couple of months. I’ve been looking for an excuse to make a nagaji character themed around a tsuchinoko for some time, and this was a good opportunity. Her namesake, the mamushi, is a Japanese pit viper related to copperheads and water moccasins. ]

Hiroko Mamushi CR 6 LN Humanoid (reptilian) This woman is short and stout, with olive scales covering her body and a tousled crop of black hair. She wears heavy padded clothing sewn with iron plates, and carries a messenger bag packed with bandages, herbs and stranger remedies over her shoulders.

Hiroko Mamushi was born in Kalsgard, the descendent of Minkaian immigrants. She was blessed from an early age with an intuitive understanding of how animals work and how to heal, but conversely grew increasingly sensitive to cold as she aged. When she became an adult, she moved from working with horses in stables to becoming a full fledged zookeeper, as much to enjoy the warmth of heated enclosures as anything. She tried the traveling adventurer lifestyle, using her healing magic to support her party, but found it less to her liking than a roof over her head and steady pay.

And that’s where things went wrong. Hiroko didn’t fully read the contract offered her by the Therian Institute, a private facility on an island in Lake Encarthan, thirty miles southeast of Caliphas. Thinking it was an ordinary, albeit exotic, zoo, she signed on as a veterinarian, only to discover that the place is actually a private prison holding lycanthropes, monstrous humanoids, and other beast-men away from “civilized society”. This is her third year working at the Institute; she has continued to renew her contract despite her disgust at the prison in the hopes that she can at least make its inmates’ lives better. The other doctor at the facility, Melasai Hasani, is a violent sadist and worshiper of Zon-Kuthon; Hiroko spends as much time making sure any prisoners do not die from her rival’s ministrations as anything else.

Hiroko wears armor and carries a shield on her back during her usual work day, as she is ready for attacks from out of control lycanthropes or spiteful guards alike. Hiroko does not particularly like violence, but is willing to use it. She has spat venom in the face of an officer at least once to prevent him from beating a prisoner to death. She has earned the nickname “Needle Killer” from the guards due to her use of acupuncture in treatment, and accepts that sobriquet grudgingly. To deal with the stress of her job, she plays cards and dice with her few friends among the prison staff, and drinks more than she should.

Hiroko wears a wig as much to keep her head warm as anything else.
