In today's Level Design class I'm talking about Difficulty and I'm very excited to talk about my favorite spell casting system in ttrpgs: The Fantasy Flight Genesys Spell Crafting Tables
Tumblr media
I love these things. Is it a little clunky? Sure! But I love a spell casting system that says "sure you CAN try to cast a really power spell you fuckin novice see how that goes" and then after a few levels in you it becomes completely doable and rewarding!
I want to use this as a specific type of Difficulty Scaling outside of just video games, I hope my students like it!
Also fun fact, a long time ago I reformated these into better, printable spell book type pages for my own convenience. If anyone plays Genesys and wants them here you go

Etrian Odyssey (the first one on Nintendo DS) is freaking brutal. They really scaled it back in later games.
Now, for some random comparison, it's not as brutal as Makai Toushi SaGa (Final Fantasy Legend), but still. I was absolutely not prepared.
I'm also thinking this game is kinda grindy...

I still never understand the mockery other people who play video games on easy mode. Like video games are supposed to be fun. I don’t want to be stuck on the same boss for two weeks. I don’t care about trophies or achievements. I just want to explore the world and story of a game I like with as little stress as possible.
Cool you beat a game on Extreme Nightmare Hell Mode. I bet that was fun for you. It’s fun for me to play on easy mode. We both had fun experiences playing the same game. That’s all that should matter.

Why is “the game was easy” always seen a negative criticism? Like I understand wanting something to be challenging but I would rather have something with good writing, music etc that was easy than something that is challenging but with no flair.
Plus I don’t have loads of free time so I enjoy being able to just do bits of the gameplay without needing to extensively plan ahead.
And from my personal experience I found Legends Arceus to be too hard in places and I’m the sort of person who gets really frustrated easily so it honestly makes the game less enjoyable for me.

Funny how FromSoft games are always the target of journos and spergs, when bitching about difficult games. When the obvious example of bullshit difficulty in modern gaming is Crash Bandicoot 4.

I'm such a slut for games that put the fear of god in me and manage to keep it there.
Like fuck. I love taking down enemies that could snac on me like a mini snickers bar. I want them to make me sneak around like a simple insect. And I loove to hear the combat music fade in, just to fade out moments later, knowing those moments counted. FUCK.

very important people is so unhinged from the guest comedian's perspective. like you get an email from sam reich asking if you want to come play ??someone?? on a show. you don't know what you're getting into but you say yes because it's a gig and you've been promised some level of Fun. you get there and spend 2-3 hours in the makeup chair being actively lied to and gaslit by the costuming team. they spray shit in your mouth. they put shit in your eyes. you can't rotate your hips because of the prosthetics. then they give you a mirror and half an hour max to scramble for Something Funny before you are unceremoniously thrown into the waiting jaws of vic fucking michaelis, who is deep in character as the most haunted freak you've ever met and running on four shots of espresso three hours of sleep + a dream. and people still came back for season 2.

I think Anya only failed out of me school because she couldn’t afford it.
She’s a very aware and intelligent woman, she figures out things and knows the composition of the mouthwashing makes it useless as anything but what it’s for. She kept Curly alive for so long, something that would be impossible for someone with no medical prowess. Doctors would’ve struggled to stabilize him. A training that good couldn’t have been cheap. She had to work and work a lot. Work hard to scrap by even though she knew the material and was passionate about it. Enough to enlighten her but not enough to keep her enrolled.
But why is she on the ship? Because all it takes is a trip or two and you’re set!

With my full playthrough of Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, I got to thinking about the different difficulty levels. Despite all being in the same series, the difficulties of each game are very different from one another.
With its heavy emphasis on RPG skills instead of cover-based shooter, the "Insanity" difficulty in ME1 doesn't change the nature of gameplay itself. The combat is definitely harder than the lower levels, but it's still the same game.
With ME2's change to a cover-based shooter emphasis, the "Insanity" difficulty is a whole different arena. Tactics need to be completely changed and different characters are less useful (some of which become nearly pointless outside of certain dedicated missions). Personally, I think some levels are so hard that it crosses over the line from "fun" to "work". I doubt I'll replay this game on Insanity after getting the achievement.
In ME3 it's back almost to where ME1 was, but not quite. Some squadmates are still more useful than others, but you can use any squadmate throughout the game without sabotaging your own combat. With the change in how Defenses and Powers work this might actually be the easiest of all three games in straight combat difficulty. I did the Insanity achievement on the first run without even a "practice" playthrough.
