I've been toying with the idea of drawing some fandom Tarot cards, you know, the ones so perfect that once you've seen it, you can't unsee it.

The Fool is the First Doctor. It just is.

Start of a voyage, a certain youthful innocence/naivety. Fits both the Doctor as a general character, and the First Doctor era in particular. This is the Doctor who run away from Gallifrey to go on adventures. This is when the show started, and it wasn't yet weighed down by its own history.

Rose spent a bunch of her summers in Leadworth, staying with Pete's Parents and she and Rory were best friends

7) Fobbed!Eleven teaching Primary school

8) Witch!Rose AU

Not a total magic AU. Just the Normal Who universe but Rose is a witch.

the rare fic that has a title. Eleven forcing himself to forget about Rose because remembering her is too painful and he keeps making stupid decisions because of it. Eventually wanted Rose to return and see how they interact.

Rose tries to jump back after Tentoo dies of old age and ends up on Gallifrey. Rose is the Timeless child

12) Dream soulmates

Rose meets One when she's a teenager and he's the time lord equivalent. They fall in love and have a telepathic connection in their dreams

13) 5 +1 times the Doctor saw bad wolf after he left Rose and tentoo behind 14) In-n-Out

Rose and ten go to in-n-out, hilarity ensues

15) Clara is Rose Tyler

Okay so this one is complicated. Everything more or less plays out how it does in the show, except that Pete's World is the Dimension that the Doctor shoved Gallifrey to keep it from being destroyed in the time war. So once tentoo and Rose settle down to live happily ever after, the Time Lords descend upon them and Demand that tentoo pay for his actions, tentoo obviously has no memory of Saving Gallifrey so they strike a deal: Rose will become a time lady and be reinserted into the fully time lord Doctor's timeline to ensure that he saves Gallifrey. and the Time Lords won't kill both of them for just existing. Rose becomes a time lord and regenerates into Clara, and is then shoved back into the original universe to become 11's companion. I've got like 26k words of this and none of them are good. but maybe someday.

I think I'll cut it off there. I've got more, but I don't think they're anywhere near as interesting as these. I'm tagging @allonsyrosetyler

Okay my one hour brainstorm on Doctor Who and the Major Arcana tarot archetypes.

(in order of appearance)

Rose Tyler - The Sun: erases darkness, demands vulnerability, center of the show during her time on the Tardis. I should have more to say here given my paragraph explanations below, but honestly, what else do I need to say here?

Jackie Tyler - The Chariot or The Star: I can’t decide. She’s always fighting to hold the reins of her life even before the Doctor swept in and added unforseen levels of chaos, but she holds on and is always moving forward, always growing as a person. She fits The Star for similar reasons. She lost her husband early and had to raise Rose on her own (The Star immediately follows the collapse of the Tower). She’s the guiding light and touchstone for Rose to come home to, always there to offer comfort and hope when it’s needed.

Mickey Smith - The Lovers: the card that references love but is about choices, and that’s Mickey isn’t it? He loved Rose and stayed loyal to her, but ultimately his character arc was about choices. He chose to stay loyal, he chose not to travel with the Doctor because he didn’t feel ready to handle it, then when he did feel ready, he chose to invite himself on board. He chose to make his home on the parallel world, and when that home (his Gran) was gone, he chose to come back. Mickey may have been unfairly yanked into the Doctor’s world by a burping trash can (no, I won’t let that absurdity go), but he sure took control back quickly.

Ninth Doctor - The Tower: I can’t make a different argument here. He’s the one that killed Gallifrey! The fall of the ivory tower that was the Time Lord civilization and he’s the last one. Destruction follows him around yet sometimes that’s good. Sometimes the beliefs and structures were holding you back and when they’re destroyed, you’re allowed to grow.

Jack Harkness - Strength: finding Jack’s card took me the longest, but I stand firm in my choice. Strength is about grappling with yourself, your inner demons, your urge to rebel and not be tamed, all of it. And Jack has been grappling with himself since before he was immortal. Sometimes he succeeds, sometimes he fails, but that’s okay. Strength is a journey not a milestone to check off your list.

Tenth Doctor - Death: yeah. Sorry. There isn’t another option. Just nonstop endings with this guy. Add in his own death wish after S2 and it’s like, buddy! Please see a therapist :( You never dealt with the Time War and now you’ve lost Rose. I get it, but you need help.

Martha Jones - Judgement: this isn’t solely about her role in the Doctor’s life. Because she doesn’t only hold the Doctor’s actions up to the light and evaluate them, she also does the same for herself. She left the Doctor because she didn’t like what she found. And in the Big Finish audio stories, Martha is still evaluating herself and trying to figure out who she wants to be and how she wants to be remembered. All she knows is it isn’t the Doctor and it isn’t UNIT.

Donna Noble - High Priestess: so much depth and knowledge hidden away - often even from herself - thanks to heterosexism and capitalism convincing her that she’s worthless and unneeded. When all along she is worth SO MUCH and is SO NEEDED. And I’m not talking about the meta-crisis bullshit. This is 100% about Donna Noble and Donna Noble only.

Some highlights of the last EDA I’ve read (Hope).

I took these screens while reading, along with my reactions. As usual, this is full of spoilers.

This suffers basically from the same kind of problems that Parallel 59 or The Banquo Legacy had: it takes forever to advance its plot, most of the interesting things happen in the last third or fourth of the book, and most of the plot and the characters are a bit too generic. The “surprise” villain isn’t surprising at all. Eight, apart from the multiple references to his lost heart, is dangerously close to “generic Doctor” even if he has a few typically Eight moments, and Fitz is written pretty much like he was written before the whole Interference business. There’s even some continuity errors (at some point it’s said that Dave has been dead for a few months, even though an entire year has passed just in Henrietta Street, and at least several months in other books, like Year of the Intelligent Tigers).

Anji, on the contrary, is one of the highlights of the book ; she makes very debatable choices, which have actual consequences, even if some plot points are solved a bit too easily in the end. I also liked that place and its inhabitants, even though I wish the author let us spend more time with them and less time with the villain.

So, yeah, not very well written, mostly bland and generic, but not boring. 5/10
