the last few episodes of persephone moping around have felt like less of a self-reflective moment for her to grow and change and more rachel griping about criticism and surrounding herself with yes men
this isn't gonna be in any way a formal essay like my usual sort, more of a slam post honestly, so fair warning that i'm gonna be a little salty here
EPISODE 263 SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!
but seriously, it's been a pity party of greek proportions because this constant "woe is me" shit with persephone that's constantly met with "no queeen you're amazing and perfect" has been going on for DAYS (real time and comic time)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
literally every episode since the comic returned has had some segment of either persephone or hades (or both) being upsetti spaghetti over their current situation because oh nooo persephone made the deal with erebus and had to sacrifice something. even though they both knew that was gonna happen and yet she did it anyways. so she just continues to lock herself away in her mansion and spout adorkable quips while her husband, mother, and colleagues deal with the mess she caused.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and of course there's the constant inclusion of apollo spitting straight facts about persephone being a terrible queen and person, but of course because it's apollo saying it, it's not meant to be taken as gospel, essentially clapping back at the words of the critics who call out persephone for being a shitty and toxic protagonist by putting those words into the mouth of a literal rapist.
and yeah episode 263 had a lot of the same shit, to the point that you could literally swap out the names of the characters and the words they were speaking and it applies exactly to rachel and the corner she put herself in u.u it's been a thing for a while now that apollo has just felt like a mouthpiece for LO criticism but as mentioned by users within the subreddit during the discussion of this newest episode, it's never felt more apparent than now.
so yeah enjoy this satirical text edit of a sequence from the newest FP episode, which I honestly can't tell is meant to satirize the critical community or Rachel's reactions to the critical community because the weird reality this comic and its community exist in has just become that wack that it's hard to believe it's not directly from The Onion sometimes LMAO
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
-and as much as i find myself empathizing with the pressure that rachel is surely under right now - no one should have to be subject to the screeching howls of the peanut gallery - i can't help but be reminded of the memes and tweets she's put out that basically outright say "persephone is supposed to be celebrated for being a shitty person, if you can't handle her at her worst you don't deserve her at her best 💅"-
instagram
Tumblr media
-and how often she's ruined her own day looking for critical groups or people with the "wrong opinions" that were minding their own business, or how much she's stifled her own community's attempts to discuss the story openly by having her mods ban anyone with even so much as a question regarding persephone's integrity.
so yeah, as much as i can empathize with her from one creator to another that being under this amount of pressure and scrutiny must be immensely frustrating and exhausting, beyond that one similarity i just can't empathize or relate to this mindset of almost learned helplessness that's taken a firm grip over her writing. this is the story she wants to tell and by all means no one is entitled to make her stop, but if she's gonna keep using her greek myth "retelling" comic that's trying to be "feminist" as a mouthpiece for her own griping over criticisms that are largely on-point and justified - to the point of putting the words of her critics into the mouth of her token villain like she's playing some single player barbie doll "act out that fight that sounded cooler in your head" game - then she's gonna keep getting called out, full stop. i figured she didn't have any nose left to rip off in spite of her face but apparently not.
look, i get it, there are some opinions and behaviors within the critical community that even i'm not on board with. there are people who absolutely take shit too far on both sides of the fandom, and i think both sides need to do more to hold themselves accountable for how they interact with each other, the comic, and rachel herself. i make it a point to keep my shit in my own house, i'm not entitled to rachel's attention and frankly it's the last thing i want because i have a lot of fun here and i don't want that to be potentially ruined or dampened! but if you come into my house and complain about the decorating, then i legitimately don't know what to tell you. i used to love LO and i'm so sad for my past self knowing fully well they're not gonna be able to wholeheartedly enjoy this comic forever due to how manipulative and shitty the storytelling has become. a story that i once connected to as an AFAB who was a victim of assault and abuse and generational trauma.
if persephone being the true main villain in her own story was ever meant to be the point of Lore Olympus, then it's taken way, way too long to get to that point, and rachel herself definitely doesn't seem to be of the mindset that that's what she's become with all of her blasé meme'ing on a plot arc that she's still expecting us to take seriously. persephone was never a very complex character to begin with - being an easy self-insert for the audience and rachel to project themselves onto and relate to - but at least in the beginning she felt like she had so much legitimate potential, she was naive but put her best foot forward and clearly wanted to make a life for herself, made by herself.
now she's just mean. jaded and mean. dependent on the constant validation of others to the point of being manipulative. an absolute shell of a person who can only grow a spine when she's punching down on people weaker than her, completely incapable of standing up to the people who are a legitimate threat to her. it's not empowering, it's not subversive, it's just another pick me story about women pitting themselves against other women and never taking accountability for their own behavior, mistakes, and deliberate actions meant to hurt others, often teetering on the line of straight up narcissism all for the sake of a "boss babe" moment.
anyways, if you want an actual well-written and GOOD scene of an empathetic female protagonist struggling to find their footing in adulthood being called the fuck out for their learned helplessness behavior, go read Tamberlane, it tackles this topic much better through its main character who keeps using her brokenness as an excuse to never do better, it slaps and it's so real.

A Gallery of Dogs Through the Ages
Dogs have been a constant of the human condition for thousands of years. Footprints of a young child and canine dated to 26,000 years ago have been found in the Chauvet Cave in France, showing them walking side by side, and, long before then, and ever since, humans and dogs have maintained that same relationship.
Where and when dogs were first domesticated is still debated, but the oldest artistic depiction of the dog on a leash – and possibly with a collar – dates to 8,000 years ago in the region of Shuwaymis in modern-day northeastern Saudi Arabia. In attaching a leash to one's dog's collar today, one is participating in a basic human activity going back to a time before the Pyramids of Giza were raised or Newgrange was built.
This gallery presents a few images of dogs through the ages from ancient Mesopotamia up through the modern day, and, as one can see, the relationship between humans and dogs has changed very little.

Whether taking inspiration from reality or the realm of imagination, his pieces imbued with a profound sense of depth and emotion. Bold and unapologetic, Jamie Hart's sculptures are a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit.
Drawing inspiration from the local environment. His work reflects his devotion to sustainability and his deep appreciation for the beauty of nature. For years, he has diligently collected roots and waste hard wood, with the intention of transforming them into heartfelt sculptures. Allowing the natural characteristics of the wood to guide his designs, resulting in strikingly simple forms that emanate strength and boldness. Through his sculptures, Jamie aims to highlight the raw beauty of his chosen medium, inviting viewers to reconnect with the natural world.
Karina Gill
Contemporary silverware designer Karina Gill will be exhibiting a selection of jewellery and silverware, created using her distinctive style.
Karina studied at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design in Farnham where she gained her BA (Hons) in 3-Dimensional Design in metal work. Since completing her degree in 1996, Karina has built up a business from her workshop in Dorset, where she designs and makes her etched silver bowls, jewellery, boxes, and sculptural pieces.
Drawing inspiration from the delicate cutting and folding of a single sheet of silver, Karina infuses her work with the rich textures of fabric prints, the rugged allure of coastlines and delights in nature’s diverse patterns and organic repetition. Her pieces evoke a sense of complexity without complication, a harmonious balance of skilful artistry and thoughtful design.

Arte romano
finales del siglo II d.C.
Leda y el cisne
Mármol lunense
Inv. 1914, núm. 263

Circling the Lake
My blood sugar dipped to 263 on Monday morning. We fixed oatmeal for breakfast for the first time in at least a couple of months. We nearly forgot how to do it, but we were reminded how long it took to actually boil the water and cook the oatmeal.
Later we decided to take a drive around Fern Ridge Lake. The afternoon temperature was in the mid-70s, a nice day for a drive. We took OR 126 and arrived in Veneta about 2 p.m. Veneta is about a dozen miles west of Eugene. Its population today is just over 5,000, and it is the site of the annual Oregon Country Fair.
Having spotted a place to eat on the map and checked out its website and reviews, we decided to stop for a late lunch before making the circuit. Our Daily Bread Restaurant and Bakery resides in a refurbished old church. It offers sandwiches, salads, seafood, burgers, steak, breakfasts, soups and homemade bread. The building was a Pentecostal church that was brought to Veneta in the 1940s in pieces from an armory in the Corvallis area.
When the church eventually moved, several small businesses and galleries occupied the building. It was later purchased by a couple who refurbished the building, adding a steeple, chapel and kitchen, and created a bakery they called “Our Daily Bread.” Another couple bought the bakery in 2005 and created a full-service restaurant. Nearly 20 years later, it has become a popular destination spot and is often referred to as the “gem of Veneta.”
Nancy and I each ordered a half sandwich, which turned out to be a good idea, given the size. She got the Turkey San, fresh roasted turkey breast with lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise and cranberry sauce on whole wheat bread. I chose the Featherbenders Grill, built with sliced turkey breast, Swiss cheese, tomato, and bacon on herb parmesan bread. I had them put the avocado on a side plate and gave it to Nancy. The turkey on both sandwiches was excellent. The roasted flavor was outstanding.
Heading north on Territorial Highway, we finally came to Clear Lake Road, which turned east across the northern boundary of the lake. Also known as Fern Ridge Reservoir, it was built on the Long Tom River by the Army Corps of Engineers and encompasses more than 12,000 acres. From the reservoir, the Long Tom joins the Willamette south of Salem.
The Fern Ridge Dam was built in 1942 and provides flood control, irrigation, recreation, navigation, and improved downstream water quality. The water level is kept high from May through September for recreation purposes.
Fern Ridge is home to multiple parks and yacht clubs, both private and county-managed. During the summer, strong winds develop in the afternoon. Because these winds are quite reliable, Fern Ridge has become a popular sailing destination for the nearby population. The Eugene Yacht Club hosts several annual regattas.
We made a brief stop at Richardson Park on the northwest corner of the lake and watched as boats sailed over the water. Several families were present enjoying kayaking. We also pulled over near the dam to take a few pictures. Two couples were fishing in the outflow from the dam.
There are several other areas bordering the lake we did not see, so we will no doubt make another visit to the area at some point.
On the way back to Springfield, we went by Jerry’s once again and found a doorknob for the door between the kitchen and garage. From the look of the existing knob it had been replaced before, perhaps because the keys had been previously lost. When we reached home we set up the new bright red umbrella we got earlier on the back deck.
Given the timing of our lunch, we just snacked for dinner about 7 p.m., with cheese and salami and chips and salsa and garlic spread. Then we munched on peanuts while entertaining ourselves with episodes of “Signora Volpe” on Acorn and “HPI” on Hulu.

Hidden Japan
Book Review:
Tumblr media
A slightly unusual travel guide. No photographs but instead it is liberally strewn with adorable, professional illustrations. Conspiratorially informal and loaded with personal insights.
Chapters are organised by theme. Some chapter titles include: art and fashion, after dark, nature and retro. Each will have an overview describing the summary of major attractions. There is a lot of text. Like a travel journal. Every section of the book has at least one of these commentated walks like a curated, literal walkthrough.
For example, the YaNaSen arts and craft walk takes place in the adjacent neighbourhoods of Yanaka, Nezu, Sendagi. Besides gallery hopping, there are many enroute asides that enrich the excursion. A confectionary shop is passed that sells ice cream sandwiches and redbean pancakes. There is something called the Petticoat Lane cafe, a street chestnut roaster, a hanko shop (Japanese stamp seal). Towards the end of the walk there is a cemetery with some historical figures interred. There is a bathhouse. Exemplary of the book's emphasis on organic, non-packaged, discovery and exploration.
The author is Chiara Terzuolo, a decade long visitor turned resident. Knowing that her previous book was, The Vegan Guide To Tokyo, goes a way towards explaining the conspicuous slant that the food landscape is presented in. Namely that vegetarian and vegan options are prevalent with little emphasis on any fish or meat. Terzuolo's cruelty-free advocacy is also reflected in the commentary and choice of attractions. Only the humane and ethical of animal cafes are mentioned. Again, this viewpoint most certainly a welcome departure from the mainstream.

Art Ecosystem
The art ecosystem refers to the interconnected network of individuals, organizations, institutions, and industries that contribute to the production, dissemination, and consumption of art. This includes artists, art collectors, galleries, museums, auction houses, art critics, curators, art historians, art educators, art publishers, and many others play a role in shaping the art and design world.
The art ecosystem is dynamic and constantly evolving and changing, influenced by a range of factors including cultural trends, technological advancements, economic conditions, and social and political events. It is shaped by a complex web of relationships and interactions between its various actors, and is characterized by a diversity of perspectives, interests, and values.
One of the key challenges facing the art ecosystem is to ensure that it remains inclusive and accessible, and that it reflects the diversity of the communities it serves. This requires a concerted effort to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion at all levels of the art world, and to create opportunities for artists from underrepresented backgrounds to have their work be recognized and valued. To build new audiences and cultivate a greater appreciation of the arts among the general public, education and outreach are also necessary, in order to help build new audiences and promote a greater appreciation of the arts among general public.
Tumblr media
An example of what can contribute to Art Ecosystems to me would be Curbside Crafters.
The place holds a space for many different creatives to openly express their creativity and showcase and sell their works. This encourages diversity and brings people from all backgrounds to contribute to the Art Ecosystem.
