Okay, so I made a post a while back talking about my concern regarding Ariana Grande being cast as G(a)linda. Now that the new trailer out I figured I'd update my feelings about it.
I'm definitely feeling more hopeful than I was with the First Look, especially since it seems like she's using a voice closer to her actual one (obviously she's making it a tad softer but that's such a G(a)linda "social climber" Arduenna Upland thing to do that I'm not gonna dock points for it.)
She looks like she got the assignment regarding the queer baiting and I kinda love that, it's one of the best parts of the books and musical. She lines so hard it kind of hurts, but in a good way. I'm fully prepared for Regina Mills pining for Emma Swan levels of angst despite knowing I'll probably be disappointed.
I like her portrayal of Act 1 G(a)linda, she seems to be balancing absolute chaos, trying to seem more wealthy than she is (something I doubt is going to be cannon but a demigirl can dream), and repressed lesbian fairly well.
However, I'm still concerned about Act 2 for the same reasons I mentioned in my last post, there's more leeway with Act 1 because she is still, very much, a naive and innocent college student who doesn't realize how fucked her government is yet.
Act 1 G(a)linda doesn't have the grief (aside from the opening obviously), confusion, guilt, pain, regret, and 50 other emotions brewing under the surface.
She isn't trapped as a puppet and mouth piece for the Wizard. She isn't torn between different allegiances.
She is a college girl trying to do college girl things and learn sorcery.
So, I'm feeling better about the casting, but I'll have to see the part 2 trailer before I feel fully comfortable saying she was the right choice. Currently, I'm trying to be optimistic, I may not be her biggest fan but I have to give her props for managing to capture the energy of the role as well as she has given it's a movie and, let's face it, movie adaptations lose a lot of the spark of the production.

Mattel recently released a preview of Wicked dolls that feature Ariana and Cynthia's vocals in Popular and Defying Gravity. Here's a longer snippet.
Cynthia sounds amazing! I can't wait for her full rendition (minus the ending riff)

Hey, weird question. I always see in stories people referring to Glinda's parents as Larena Upland and Highmunster Arduenna, but I went to double-check in the first book and she mentions twice that the Arduenna clan name comes from her mother's side. She says in the second chapter: 'Then I must overcome my natural shyness. My name is Galinda. I am of the Arduenna Clan on my mother’s side.' And then when they are meeting the Wizard: 'Oh, you useless thing, all talk and no—I’m Glinda from Frottica, if you please, Your Highness, descended matrilineally from the Arduennas of the Upland, and this, if you please, is Elphaba, the Thropp Third Descending from Nest Hardings. If you please.'
So I was wondering if you know how family names work in the Oz lore. Such as, if Highmunster is actually Upland, would Larena be called Lady Upland? I've been trying to write for practice, and the last name situation always gets me stuck.
Ah yes. The confusion regarding Glinda's parents comes from Maguire retconning her mother's last name in the third book. Kind of. Now I may be wrong about this but we never learn anything of Glinda's dad in the first book, it was always her mother brought up as being "of the Arduennas of the Upland." That made me think "Arduennas of the Upland" was the whole nobility thing and Glinda's dad was just some random guy, hence why her "good blood" was only from "one side."
BUT THEN. In the third book there's a very stupid and pointless family tree that shows her mother as an Upland and her father as an Arduenna. And in the fourth book, Glinda even refers to her mother as an Upland, and that as the reason why they're filthy rich. In my opinion that's just a continuity error? Because then does that mean the Uplands are the ones with the noble blood? And her father was an Arduenna this whole time when he was never mentioned before?
Maguire. What. Tbh, to this day I still don't know if I'm missing something there.
As to whether or not she'd be called Lady Upland, that's very much up to you I would say, since you get to assign Glinda's parents whatever last names you prefer thanks to canon being so messy there. Glinda herself is called Lady Chuffrey after she gets married, so there is precedent to women taking their husband's last names!

Galinda Arduenna of the Uplands (redraw)
I redraw my Galinda piece after a month. I decided to just loosely follow the line gestures from the reference photo instead of trying to copy the pose so that it looks less stiff. I also used a Canson watercolor paper (200 gsm) but I feel like this is just a slightly better version of that other watercolor paper I used. The paint just sits there... :/ But it does absorb water and pigment better than the other one I used in my Studying the Masters and Redhead Girl piece.
I really like how the hair turned out. I liked the colors and brushstrokes and stuff owo
I tried doing a much different way of making backgrounds instead of just white bg and those spots using the glitter paints (they really show up in person tho T.T)

what if glinda kept a diary and she wrote about elphie all of the time, even years after post-melting and a servant finds it days after she dies and said servant makes copies of the diary and distributes it anonymously. everyone finds out what really happened and how much glinda loved elphie and they all feel really guilty

Me and @wyfolk were talking about the line in Defying Gravity, “I really hope you get it, and you don’t live to regret it.” Elphaba dies. Glinda lives. Who was the lucky one?
