I see some people in the reblogs saying that Gelphie isn’t canon. Y’all, GELPHIE IS CANON. The musical Wicked is based on the novel *Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West*, by Gregory Maguire. Gregory Maguire has stated that he intentionally wrote the characters to have romantic and sexual tension. They also KISS at one point. Maguire has also stated that he intentionally wrote things in an ambiguous way so that it comes across like Elphaba and Glinda may have had sex. ELPHABA AND GLINDA ARE A CANON SHIP. GELPHIE IS CANON. It is canon in the novel, and the musical cannot be wholly divorced from that. Moreover, Kristen Chenoweth, who played Glinda in the original cast, and Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda in the movie adaptation and its upcoming continuation, have agreed that Glinda may be “a little bit in the closet.” This means that both the films and the original performances of the musical were made partially with queer intentions. GELPHIE IS CANON. GELPHIE IS CANON. It is a nearly thirty year-old ship, and it is an important part of 21st century queer/sapphic media and fandom culture. Please, feel free to reblog. I encourage Gelphie supporters to do so.
I should note that this poll refers to the ship as simply being from “Wicked,” which, in my view, includes all of the pieces of media that I referred to which are already out. The novel, the stage musical, and the 2024 movie adaptation.

This poll is a celebration of fandom and fandom history; we're aware that there are certain issues with some of the listed pairings and sources, but they are a part of that history. Please do not take this as an endorsement of anything included in the bracket, and refrain from harassment.

So nervous about the Wicked movie, not because I think it'll be bad or anything. I just wish they hadn't decided to add book elements, because that's stressing me out. They've clearly decided to disregard some of the easy changes they could have made to be book accurate.
I love Jonathan Bailey, but I wish they had chosen a moc for the role. Fiyero being from a tribal background in the books is such a simple detail and actually adds a little depth to his and Elphaba's relationship (being discriminated against, I believe, is something they bond over).
I'm scared that they might shy away from important political implications and situations from the book, it looks like we might be getting anarchist Elphaba in the movie, but actually getting into the policies in Oz is important to that making sense.
The straight washing is a thing I live in fear of, the og musical already erased a lot of gelpie's love story and left us with very strong subtext. I'm hoping the movie gives us less queer baiting, but idk.
Also, terrified to see how they handle religion in all of this.
There's a lot of other things in worried about in this movie, I'm still looking forward to it but I feel like it having book qualities is like opening Pandora's box.

Before Elphaba and Galinda are even friends ans Boq tells Elphaba that Galinda “always seems to need her” and Elphaba just laughs at the idea and I’m dying knowing that Elphaba is going to leave her right when Glinda needs to stay the most 🙃

Okay, so I made a post a while back talking about my concern regarding Ariana Grande being cast as G(a)linda. Now that the new trailer out I figured I'd update my feelings about it.
I'm definitely feeling more hopeful than I was with the First Look, especially since it seems like she's using a voice closer to her actual one (obviously she's making it a tad softer but that's such a G(a)linda "social climber" Arduenna Upland thing to do that I'm not gonna dock points for it.)
She looks like she got the assignment regarding the queer baiting and I kinda love that, it's one of the best parts of the books and musical. She lines so hard it kind of hurts, but in a good way. I'm fully prepared for Regina Mills pining for Emma Swan levels of angst despite knowing I'll probably be disappointed.
I like her portrayal of Act 1 G(a)linda, she seems to be balancing absolute chaos, trying to seem more wealthy than she is (something I doubt is going to be cannon but a demigirl can dream), and repressed lesbian fairly well.
However, I'm still concerned about Act 2 for the same reasons I mentioned in my last post, there's more leeway with Act 1 because she is still, very much, a naive and innocent college student who doesn't realize how fucked her government is yet.
Act 1 G(a)linda doesn't have the grief (aside from the opening obviously), confusion, guilt, pain, regret, and 50 other emotions brewing under the surface.
She isn't trapped as a puppet and mouth piece for the Wizard. She isn't torn between different allegiances.
She is a college girl trying to do college girl things and learn sorcery.
So, I'm feeling better about the casting, but I'll have to see the part 2 trailer before I feel fully comfortable saying she was the right choice. Currently, I'm trying to be optimistic, I may not be her biggest fan but I have to give her props for managing to capture the energy of the role as well as she has given it's a movie and, let's face it, movie adaptations lose a lot of the spark of the production.
