the whole "water can melt her" thing is clearly both believed by the people (the crowd in "thank goodness") and sanctioned by the government (the posters in "no one mourns the wicked"). so, tragic headcanon: glinda is the one who spread the rumor.
she does it because she thinks it will help elphie, if people attack her with water instead of guns.
and then she mourns, because dorothy throws water on elphaba and elphaba screams and glinda watches her shadow melt away -- and she thinks that elphie's metaphorical blood is on her hands.

It's funny to have so many current happenings in culture relate back to my Showa era magical girl interest. It's usually a pretty past-oriented hobby, but this weekend we had a major film opening that's pretty related.
Wicked: Part 1 is an adaptation of the 2003 stage musical, Wicked, which is itself an adaptation of the 1995 novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. That, of course, was commercially published fanfiction of the 1939 major motion picture, The Wizard of Oz, which had been an adaptation of the 1900 children's novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
The Wizard of Oz film was first shown in Japan in the 1950s and the novel was translated and published in the '70s to much popularity. It has since been influential on much Japanese media, including the magical girl genre and the isekai (異世界) genre.

I went to see Wicked today and I was enjoying it so far. That was until the theater was evacuated because they burned something at the concession stand. I know I got a ticket voucher and I'm able to see the entire movie for free again. However, we were almost finished with the movie. We had 30 minutes left!!!!

honestly rip to madame morrible who spent so long carefully cultivating elphaba as an asset only to COMPLETELY fucking blow it. i guess it might be more of the wizard's fault, idk whose decision it was, but. guys. the inciting incident for inviting elphaba to the emerald city WAS HER ACCIDENTALLY DOING MAGIC BECAUSE SHE WAS SO PASSIONATE ABOUT ANIMAL RIGHTS. and what do they do as the first "test" when they get her to the palace? THEY MAKE HER ENGAGE IN ANIMAL CRUELTY.
and also why the fuck did they decide to talk about their evil plans RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE GIRLS. hello. OPSEC YOU GUYS. OPSEC. reminder that elphaba is VERY OBVIOUSLY ACTIVIST MATERIAL.
i do believe that elphaba is very strong in determination and character. but i also believe that if the villains hadn't stored their one (1) shared brain cell inside of a giant ugly mask they probably could've been even SLIGHTLY more subtle and gotten elphaba on their side, at least for a little while.

The woods become their safe haven, where they meet when the rest of the world intrudes too heavily on their personal lives. For Elphaba, it is the cruel words and judgements murmured beneath breath and whispered behind her back that send her into Fiyero’s arms, running so fast she nearly flies. He doesn’t ask her what is wrong yet, merely holds her tightly and lets her sob into his chest. It should be easier, she thinks. She’s faced down threats her whole entire life, subtle and obvious. But just because her anger is quiet does not mean it is nonexistent. Beneath it all, she burns. Her breathing slows, the time between hiccups stretching.
“Go ahead,” Fiyero prompts, his voice flowing over her like fingers skimming bruised skin, searching for a deeper wound.
“It’s… I’ve always… They just…”
She can’t get the words out. Fiyero’s hands rubbing a soothing pattern along her back, lowering her shoulders from their tightened spaces up by her ears.
“It should be easier,” she whispers. “Being with you.” She sees the alarm flash in his eyes and the hurt that follows it despite both emotions disappearing mere seconds later.
“I don’t regret it,” Elphaba clarifies quickly, a brief press of her lips against his following as if to compound her statement, “I don’t think I ever could. And I’m used to what they say, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt.” She hates it, really, being spoken of so callously. They are quite certain the prince will discard her within the coming days. She hates what they say about him even more, that he must be mad, or brainless, to be with her. It is these thoughts that spur her suggestion.
“Perhaps we should… slow ourselves, for a bit.”
She keeps her voice light, though cautionary. His hands spasm against her.
“What does that mean?” Fiyero asks, his voice forcibly level.
“We could be a bit more subtle.”
“No.”
Her shock is palpable.
“No? Fiyero, they speak about you like you have nothing in your mind. I can take what they say about me, I can, but you… you don’t deserve their cruelty. You’ve done nothing to draw their ire.”
“Neither have you,” he insists, as passionate as ever. He moves to take her hands and she allows it, squeezing them lightly.
“Your only crime against them is being different than they are. It’s not even a crime, not really. They fear what they don’t understand, but they could never understand someone so complex while living so shallowly.” His half smile is bittersweet as he adds, “I should know.”
Not for the first time, she is grateful he’s revealed himself to her. She squeezes his hands again. He raises them to his lips, offering her fingers a tender kiss.
“Elphaba,” Fiyero says softly, “You never lessened yourself for them. Not to gain their approval, or earn their adoration. And they should adore everything you are. I’m not going to lessen myself, or us, for them. And as for what they say…” His expression darkens, and she cannot deny the small flutter of her heart at seeing it, at seeing him so concerned over her emotions.
“I will deal with that personally.”
Fiyero has kept every promise he’s made to her. She sees no reason to cast doubt upon him now. Relief draws new tears to her eyes, and he diligently wipes them away.
“Are we agreed?” he hums into her cheek once he’s finished. She nods against him, pulling his face back to hers.
“No subtlety.”
