Samsung galaxy z fold 6 - Wow, It's FINALLY Happening A lot of current flagship phones, such as those with the Z Fold 5, are equipped with two batteries that allow for faster charging that can reach 25W. It's not likely to be the case that Z Fold 6 will reach this level but it's worthwhile to mention that the present Galaxy S24 Ultra can reach 45 Watt charges, but only with Samsung's charging system.

MCU Phase 5 Most Anticipated
10.
Although this is my #10 most anticipated, I am still looking forward to this show. I really liked Echo’s portrayal in Hawkeye, especially her fight sequences. Other than that, I don’t know where they are going with this show, so that’s why it’s at my # 10 spot. I’ll definitely be tuning in though.
9.
I’m mainly interested in this movie to see what happened with US Agent. Hate him or love him, John Walker was entertaining and so complex in Captain America and The Winter Soldier. It’ll be interesting to see who rounds out the team.
8.
it was Agatha all aloonnnggg. Agatha was truly captivating in Wandavision and I’m excited to see where they go with this show. Does it pick up where it left off, or will we go back in time and learn Agatha’s entire backstory. There is a lot you can do with this character, and hopefully Wanda will make a guest appearance.
7.
This show moved up my most anticipated list after watching the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer. The scene where she is creating her armor ‘Ironman style’ looked amazing. I can’t wait to see what she brings to the MCU.
6.
This is the last hurrah for the Guardians of the Galaxy as we currently know them. I have thoroughly enjoyed the first two volumes, so I have high hopes for this film. This film will most definitely be emotional and put an end to James Gunn’s tenure at Marvel.
5.
This is our first Captain America movie sans Steve Rogers and it’s exciting to see what Sam Wilson brings to the mantle. I’m looking forward to learning more about Isaiah Bradley (hopefully) and it’ll be exciting to see another hero earn his wings (Joaquin Torres). We may also see the return of Red Skull, an iconic Captain America villain.
4.
It has been 18 years since Blade has been on the big screen, even though Blade laid the groundwork for the MCU. Per Indiewire, “ Although “Blade” wasn’t an immediate critical success, the future cult classic was a surprise box office hit for Marvel, earning $131 million against a budget of $45 million budget. The “Blade” trilogy went on to earn a combined $415 million. In many ways, it saved Marvel’s cinema prospects entirely, as well as revived the superhero genre,” Insider says. “‘Blade’ was a moral victory for Marvel, finally establishing it as a rising force in Hollywood. It demonstrated that audiences could be drawn towards Marvel’s C list characters.” Blade is an unsung hero for Marvel Cinema and it’s exciting to see him back in the fold.
3.
We’re currently in The Multiverse Saga and Loki has done a lot to usher the Multiverse into the MCU. Between The Multiverse and Kang, Loki is arguably the most important show on Disney +
2.
This show makes it to my # 2 most anticipated for a variety of reasons. 1st-this show will be 18 episodes, making this feel like a proper television show. 2nd-Daredevil and Kingpin being included in the MCU brings hope that we will see some of our other favorite characters enter the MCU as mainstays (Agents of Shield, Cloak and Dagger, The Runaways, Punisher, Misty Knight, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Colleen Wing, The Hand). 3rd-it’ll be interesting to see Disney’s interpretation of the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. 4th-Daredevil was a wonderful show on Netflix so it’s exciting that his story will continue
1.
This storyline is iconic and MCU fans have been waiting for it’s adaption the moment Skrulls were introduced in the MCU. It’ll be fun to see who has been a Skrull this entire time (outside of Nick Fury & Maria Hill) and what the real Nick Fury has been doing on the moon.

“The Mandalorian” S2 is a power fantasy with mini Star Wars trailers
The term “Plot armor” is often used by readers and viewers to describe the myriad of ways writers keep their heroes away from any real danger no matter what choices or actions they make in the narrative. It’s typically a derisive phrase for the way a writer’s hero seems to escape death no matter what is thrown at him for the sole purpose of moving the plot forward.
In Disney+’s “The Mandalorian” this term takes a far more literal description in the form of our main anti-hero, played by Pedro Pascal, in his beskar armor which seems to be, by all accounts the most indestructible material in the galaxy far, far away.
(I mean, it still looks really cool too, of course.)
The result of this narrative decision in this series is that action scenes often don’t have real tension to them. In another series you might be able to reasonably believe the hero might be in danger with blaster fire shooting all around them but with beskar it’s almost comically not the case at all. Stormtroopers fire laser blast after laser blast at The Mando and each time they bounce harmlessly off him as if he were fucking Superman. It makes scenes feel devoid of stakes and danger no matter what situation they are in.
The show thus becomes a power fantasy, as action scenes serve as extended highlight reels for the Mando. Where season 1 of the show mitigated the power of the Mando’s plot armor by putting him more often in situations where his beskar alone wasn’t enough to save the day, season 2 goes mostly full power fantasy as The Mando rarely runs into a situation he can’t just quite literally walk through.
(“Aim for his armor, men! That’s his weak point!”)
This isn’t to say the season wasn’t without its high moments or even that it wasn’t enjoyable plenty of times but the series’ devotion to fan servicey action and callbacks to “Hey remember ____” makes it a fairly shallow story. At least for myself.
Season 2 of “The Mandalorian” continues the story of Din and his small Yoda-like companion, The Child (later known officially as Grogu), as he looks to complete a quest to return the burgeoning Force wielder to the Jedi. As he seeks to reunite The Child with the ancient Order, he encounters other Mandalorians who are on a quest to retake Mandalore and right on their tail is the nefarious Grand Moff Gideon who is still bent on capturing Grogu for whatever it is he has planned for the Empire.
Let me start this review by saying power fantasies aren’t inherently bad to watch or read. They can be good, cathartic junk food for the soul and can also be compelling, artistic, or even deeply metaphorical in their own way. A movie series like “John Wick” for instance is a power fantasy that aims to reinvent the wheel in action film-making with Keanu Reeves performing perhaps the best gun kata of all-time onscreen. Another film like Paul Verhoueven’s “Total Recall” can satirize the power fantasy to show how ridiculous it is in concept.
So, making your hero an unstoppable killing machine isn’t necessarily always a bad thing if used properly.
(Seriously, this is one of the smartest action films ever made. Don’t @ me.)
Now that that’s established, however, “The Mandalorian” season 2, despite some strong moments here and there, is a power fantasy that lacks these elements for a more interesting narrative. If you believe killing dozens of stormtroopers onscreen while never suffering so much as a scratch for eight episodes equals compelling storytelling then boy does Disney have a series for you.
Through the first four-ish episodes, the new season is mostly just fine and even quite enjoyable. We have the Mando getting a fun side quest with Timothy Olyphant on Tatooine where they get to wrangle a sand worm in a callback to the Westerns that inspired much of the franchise’s aesthetic. The Mando gets to escort a frog lady to her home planet to give birth to some tadpoles and they run into some actual danger in this episode in the form of kyrnknas/space spiders. And we get the return of Bo Katan from Dave Filoni’s “Clone Wars” and “Rebels” cartoon series, with Katee Sackhoff herself reprising the role in a fun Mandalorian team-up episode.
(I’m just so happy to see my girl, Starbuck, again more than anything honestly ;_;)
But the wheels started officially falling off for me in the next episode.
Episode 5 marked the live-action debut of fan favorite Ahsoka Tano, played by Rosario Dawson, and she meets the Mando by getting the jump on him with her lightsabers. In virtually any other situation we have been told lightsabers can cut through virtually anything. Now, beskar has been shown to be plenty durable throughout the series so far but lightsabers? Surely not.
Well…
It is an overall good episode despite this but it marked the point for me where I badly wanted The Mando to just go the rest of the series without it. Obviously, the writers aren’t going to actually kill our hero, afterall The Mouse needs more money and he can’t have it unless we get 50 more Mandalorian episodes and spin-offs, but at some point I gotta feel like there’s a possibility at least that our hero might actually die or at least is in danger. It is actually super funny to me each time The Mando ducks or seeks cover in a shootout when I know, and the viewer damn well knows, he can literally walk right into the middle of it and shoot all these motherfuckers at his own leisure cause his actual plot armor is the stuff of adamantium and vibranium combined.
Episode 5 is mostly good though, it’s a nice callback to old school samurai flicks and for an old fan like myself it was enough to ignore beskar again saving the Mando’s ass.
(This was cool...This...was...cool.)
If episode 5 marked the point in which the wheels began to come off though, episode 6 is where the show really spun out into the ditch for me. Perhaps, this series worst episode, personally, episode 6 reintroduces fan favorite and series inspiration Boba Fett back officially into the fold and the result was perhaps the most self-indulgent entry of the series.
(I mean, it was directed by Robert Rodriguez so...)
Boba arrives to demand his beskar from The Mando who promptly tells him “no” before they are ambushed by a platoon of stormtroopers. Alongside Ming-Na Wen’s Fennec Shand, the three do battle with the stormtroopers with ridiculous ease. I’m aware that stormtroopers exist to be on the highlight reel of our heroes in this franchise and have a long history of not being able to hit the broad side of a bantha but again, I can only watch these guys die by the dozens onscreen over and over again while our heroes get away without suffering even a bruise before it starts feeling boring and repetitive.
It only gets worse once Boba actually puts on his armor. In a sequence that I would describe as “gratuitously” fan servicey, Boba wastes just about every last stormtrooper in this scene culminating with him destroying their two get-away vehicles in a single shot with a rocket. Considering he was killing them with ease just moments before with nothing more than a battle club and a bathrobe, it seemed almost hilariously needless that he donned his iconic armor.
youtube
(It would be tempting to say the stormtroopers fought as ineptly as the Putty Patrol here but even the Power Rangers have struggled a few times against these guys...)
I get that Boba is really important to a lot of fans, based on their perceptions of him in the original trilogy and subsequent books and graphic novels that came out in the following years, but here’s a hot take; this series didn’t need him in it. Maybe they didn’t need to keep him rotting in the Sarlacc Pit but this episode, alongside Ahsoka Tano’s feels more like marketing choices for the story rather than narrative ones. I’ll concede that there is a bit more substance to having Ahsoka there to commune with Grogu but their additions to the plot don’t actually show much of anything about the Mando outside physically helping him in a fight.
The way they tease, in both cases, stories that exist outside the internal narrative between Ahsoka’s search for Admiral Thrawn and Boba taking over Jabba’s palace at the end of the final episode, it feels like Disney threw in mini trailers for fans to nibble on at the expense of telling the Mando’s own story and letting it stand on its own like the first season.
The choice to have these characters shoved into this season again appears to be market driven not narrative. Once more, I get that these characters are important personally to many fans, but the appearance of these characters alone DO NOT equal good storytelling.
(Me when a fan tells me “But Boba was such a badass in *obscurely titled EU book that a handful of general audiences have read*! He deserves this moment!”)
The final episode of the season is truly encapsulating of all these issues “The Mandalorian” has, however. Moff Gideon, played by the always sharp Giancarlo Esposito, has Grogu imprisoned aboard his ship. The Mando and his friends plan a rescue mission to save him and, just like nearly every episode before, it is stupidly easy for our protagonists.
The crew of five, again, walk through every Imperial on the ship. I don’t mean this metaphorically by the way, I mean this literally as Cara, Fennec, Bo Katan and Koshka Reeves (played by WWE’s Sasha Banks) without a single moment of real adversity just blast through every stormtrooper on the ship and never get hit once in the process.
A good action scene needs an element of danger, a sense that our hero might actually not come out of this alive even though we all know they will. An action scene without this has no tension and without tension it becomes booooooooring.
(Even John fucking Wick is capable of bleeding, guys...)
The finale had a chance, however, to add real stakes and danger to the scene in the form of this season’s new enemy; The Dark Troopers. These Imperial battle droids were foreshadowed as these super soldiers at the end of episode 4 and seemed to be billed as a real dangerous match for our heroes to faceup against. When the Mando finally gets himself face to face with one he finds they are not as easy to kill as the nameless stormtroopers from before. To see The Mando briefly face real adversity for a change snapped me out of my cynical mood so sharply for a moment I thought I had turned on another series by accident.
But of course, danger never lasts long in this series as The Mando’s armor again saves him first from getting pummeled to death by the droid’s super fists then he uses his plot spear, cause of course he has one of those too, to finish the job.
Danger over.
Moff Gideon doesn’t fair much better in this episode. This villain who had been built up for two seasons as this calculative monster gets stopped rather easily with Mando and his friends barely breaking a sweat. This character feels wasted because of this, even though I’m sure Giancarlo Esposito will return in the next season. He just feels about as much like a pushover as the nameless stormtroopers in this series.
The episode had one more chance though to show these Dark Troopers meant business toward the end as we found the heroes cornered on the command deck with nowhere to run and a dozen of these droids ready to blast and pound them into the floorboards. But help arrives in the form of a Deus X-Wing Machina.
Without having to face even one Dark Trooper, Luke fucking Skywalker arrives on the ship and kills every droid without breaking a sweat. It plays as inspiring in the moment but again I just found myself bored and irritated. A chance to see the series heroes actually use their wits and show their creativity in a moment of true danger thwarted to please fan boys.
I get that Grogu called out to him in episode 6 but creatively this felt like an extremley lazy way to solve the heroes’ dilemna.
(“Hello my name is Jedi. I enjoy doing...*computes script* Jedi things.”)
This season wasn’t all bad. It certainly had nice production value that made each alien world pop and beautiful to look at. Every actor and actress played their parts expertly well, with what they were given, and made for interesting characters at times. There are also nice homages to both Western and Samurai cinema throughout the season that fans of both will appreciate. And Pedro Pascal is just so good on his own, especially in tender moments with Grogu, that you forget that his character is kind of a Gary Stu.
But the main crux of the issue here that I’m trying to get across is the reason you need to remove the plot armor of your heroes is not just because action scenes need tension and stakes, it’s that when faced with danger these scenes reveal who these characters are. I used to believe that the reason Mandalorians and Jedi had such a fierce rivalry in the lore despite the obvious advantages of wielding the Force was because these famed bounty hunters were just that fucking good at killing. That despite being, on paper, normal people they had great martial prowess, athletic skill, and the tactical wit to outsmart people who can literally sense their feelings. But now with beskar and the way this series is written, it appears the Mandalorians were challenging warriors just because they happened to harness the most OP armor building material in the galaxy.
It makes you wonder how the fuck they were conquered to begin with…
(Maybe they just needed more knee rockets...)
This takes away from the mysticism of the Mandalorians for me. It makes The Mando less interesting to me in the way he fights. Yea he can shoot really good too but really it’s the armor that makes him the fighter that he is and I find that kind of boring. We occasionally get this character to remove the armor during the series, including a whole episode that was easily one of the best of the season, and in every case he’s more interesting once the helmet comes off. I get that fans hold a lot of reverence for that armor, yea it still looks really cool, but making it this impenetrable super material doesn’t add anything to the story.
If anything, it takes away from it.
(Plus how could you not love Pedro Pascal when he’s out of armor? uWu)
I wouldn’t go as far as to say I hate season 2, even though I spent 2000 plus words just now lambasting it but I guess I just want to say I am unimpressed more than anything. I feel like I’ve seen better Star Wars be it in the movies, cartoons, books, video games, etc and I’ve certainly seen better action in the franchise as well.
Considering fan reaction so far appears to be overwhelmingly positive, I am definitely in the minority here and you are welcome to enjoy this series as much as you want in spite of how unimpressed I am with the season. But considering all I have seen of this fandom the last few years, regarding complaints about fan service (“Rogue One”), easily defeated/underdeveloped bad guys (“The Last Jedi”), and Mary Sues (The sequel trilogy in general), I have to ask again what is it actually that fans like or don’t like about new entries in the franchise? It’s not that there isn’t valid criticisms there and “The Mandalorian” is enjoyable in sincere ways too but it has many of the issues I hear commonly said of more divisive entries in the Disneyverse. So why does it get a pass?
I’ve been told it’s not worth my energy to talk too derisively about the fans in one of my earlier write-ups, so I’ll leave it at that but it does make me wonder.
(“Rogue One” admittedly has a simarily self-indulgent action sequence though haha...)
Season 2 of “The Mandalorian” isn’t the worst piece of Star Wars media ever created, far from it, and for most part its solid enjoyable Saturday morning cartoon theater but if the series wants to really take steps to become more compelling in the future it might be good to stop bubble wrapping their heroes in plot armor. Literally.
Until then this is the way…I guess…
Me getting ready for the backlash...

2017- Top 7 (And 1)
Well as another year closes, so does another fantastic year in gaming. In fact, this could be one of the best in history!! You may say, Why only a Top 7 and there are two reasons. 1: Everyone does a Top 10 or Top 20, but nobody does just 7. It also makes the list more prestigious 2: I’m lazy.
But I do give my biggest disappointment
Well lets get on with it.
Biggest Disappointment: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)
Now I know you’re shocked and you’re saying things like “ This list is shit! BotW is the GOTY!” or “WHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTT how?!?!” Let me explain. I don’t have the nostalgia for Nintendo that a majority of people have, so I can give a pretty non-biased opinion when it comes to Nintendo games. BotW is a decent game, but its not without its faults. Actually it’s a really bad Zelda game and an even worse ‘Open-World’ game. It’s an open world game made by people who haven’t played one in a decade. However, most alarming is the story, or lack thereof. I know part of the charm in Zelda games is creating your own adventure, but I found almost zero motivation, especially in the early hours to even progress forward. BotW is vastly different from previous Zelda games and takes a lot of risks. Some paid and most didn't. The game is gorgeous for a launch game and being able to play it both on my tv and ‘on the go’ is also a huge plus. The biggest complaint though is the controls are complete ass ( NOTE: I did not play it with a Pro controller, but I understand its much better) I get that with the way the controller is designed you're limited to certain buttons, but some of the controls are so counter-intuitive, that I constantly found myself looking or thinking about which button did what rather than naturally doing it ( I’ve been playing videogames for 25 years, so its not a user error, its a design error). All in all, its a Fine game and a lot of people love it, but its not the best game of the year.. it’s not even the best game on the system….
Number 7: Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice (PS4)
Hellblade could be on this list for its impeccable sound design alone. Seriously, play this game in the dark with a good headset. While there is combat, the game is not predicated on heavy combat, its more about the deeply personal story told with a Norse mythology backdrop. The puzzles are simple, but unique. The game also looks incredible. The voice acting is superb. In a gaming environment littered with so many open-world games, a well-designed, linear story-driven game is great palette cleanser. Seriously, check this game out.
Number 6: Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (Xbox One)
This is in no way a political post, but in the current state of the United States, a game about killing Nazis is so refreshing. It also helps that its actually a really great game. While I do think The New Order is a more meaty, complete story and game, The New Colossus has more jaw dropping “HOLY SHIT!” & “WTF!” moments than any game I’ve played in the last 7-8 years. The game knows what it is and it excels greatly. The game takes some really creative plot twists. BJ isn’t just some standard FPS goon that murders Nazis ( well HE is that too, but you learn more about his past and find a very human side to him). Its also go violent and so satisfying taking an ax to the face of a Nazi. MY biggest gripe is right when the game really starts hitting its stride, it just sort’ve ends. You can go back and revisit previous locations to take of Ubercommanders, but unless you just want more of the same, there is no real incentive to so. I’m really looking forward a 3rd(4th?) chapter in this Wolfenstein story.
Number 5: Super Mario Odyssey (Switch)
I’m not the biggest Mario fan and like I said above, I don’t have the nostalgia for Nintendo. As a person, who thinks Mario 64 is way over-rated and is a sub-par game, but loves Mario Galaxy, my biggest concern going in was that this was going to be more like 64. To my surprise, after getting used to the sensitivity of the controls, I found my self REALLY enjoying the game and constantly looking for moons to collect, even when I had enough to move on to the next world. The game is set up in a way to encourage you to revisit worlds even after you’ve beaten the game. I found it to be relatively short for a Mario game, but honestly there is enough there even if you don’t want to 100% the game. Cappy is a new and fresh introduction to Mario that the franchise really needed.
Number 4: Prey (XBONE)
Man I have to admit something about Prey. I played the demo and didn’t like it. Finally played the full game and for the first 2 hours thought it was kinda dull, but I knew there was something there and I kept on playing and boy am I glad I did. Prey is THE BEST game seemingly nobody played. I fault a lot of that to the failure to market it correctly. Prey is such a unique experience and a game that is so different from anything our there, it has to be played to fully comprehend it. In terms of gameplay, it doesn’t reinvent the wheel but it’s one of those games that when I wasn’t playing, it’s all I thought about. When I was playing, I just wanted to explore every nook and corner within Talos 1. It also has one of the most unique endings/twist to a game I've experienced in a long time. I don’t want to dwell on too much because I’ll ramble into spoiler territory but do yourself a favor and PLAY this game!
Number 3: Injustice 2 (PS4)
As a massive DC fan and a massive Mortal Kombat, I was hotly anticipating I2, I was a little concerned with the gear system prior to release fearing it would cause imbalance (especially online) but it didn’t for the most part. In a gaming world, where loot boxes are all the rage, I think NRS handled it fairly well. At the end of the day, I wish it was all just cosmetic because i rarely looked at the stat boost and just went with what i liked cosmetically. The story picks up following the events of the first game. Its also very odd to me that NRS can make a better, more compelling story than Warner Bros can with their movies…but I digress. There are plethora of new and returning characters and all are different enough to fit your fighting preference. Some characters i would’ve preferred over others, but all in all, I think its a very impressive roster. With different towers/multiverses rotating in various intervals, its a significant upgrade to the S.T.A.R labs challenges from the previous game. I put in over 100 hours and thats even before all the DLC characters are out.
Number 2: Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (PS4)
Being that Uncharted is one of my favorite gaming franchises, this should be no surprise. Goodbye Nathan Drake, Hello supporting cast! With Nathan Drakes adventures ‘completed”, I am all for more Uncharted with side stories for supporting cast. (Young Sully next please). Chloe (being absent from Uncharted 4) and Nadine (being a villain in Uncharted 4) is an interesting tag team set up. Personalities clash and deception and lying is ever present as you’d expect. As per the status quo from Naughty Dog, the game is graphically top notch and the mo-cap and voice acting is superb. There are several nods to previous games and even an appearance by a certain character. The game is shorter than previous Uncharted games and its honestly the perfect length for this style of story an price tag. More Uncharted is always a good thing!
Honorable Mentions: Pyre(PC), & Metroid: Samus Returns(3DS)
Number 1: Horizon Zero Dawn(PS4)
Man, what can I say about HZD that hasn’t been covered before. From the first trailer I saw, I had an expectation of what I wanted from this game and its surpassed it ten fold. An achievement in and of itself these days. There are a lot of great open -world games out there, but one of the biggest issues with all this open-world-ness is that story gets dumbed down or sacrificed ( see Breath of the Wild). Horizon Zero Dawn has a really great story that keeps you going adn trying to figure out “What is Zero Dawn?” Trying to uncover all the little secrets is so much fun, the collectibles make you explore this gigantic world. The (post-apocalyptic) )world never feels empty or barren ( unless that was the intention) Even the side quests feel meaningful for the most part. There is a lot going on in this game, but its all organized and presented together well. My one gripe is that the game doesn't do a great job of telling you the differences and benefits to certain ammo types, you’re basically left to figure it out on your own. Fighting robot dinosaurs never gets old and with the addition of The Frozen Wilds, you get 3 new creatures and they are brutal as ever. Every fight with a Thunderjaw or a group of Scorchers feels meaningful and satisfying even when you hit level 60. While I don’t think its fair to compare Breath of the Wild and Horizon Zero Dawn, they are often compared ad nauseum. I will say that in my opinion HZD did almost everything better than BotW in the things they both tried to accomplish. Horizon Zero Dawn is not only my favorite game on 2017, its made its way into my Top 5 favorite games of All-Time!

LG phones Review
Fierce competition in the consumer electronics segment forces companies to constantly experiment. Of course, the modern smartphone market is no exception. In recent years, many segment leaders have been actively expanding their assortment, experimenting in search of the best price / quality ratio. As known, this parameter significantly affects the choice of the optimal phone. For example, many Best Sellers have only average specs, but a good price / quality ratio has ensured them marketing success. As a result, some companies annually released a large number of models with almost identical specs. For example, in 2014 Samsung introduced 56 new models, and LG - 41 new smartphones. But the cost of any product consists of the costs of development and design, production, logistics, advertising, etc. Further support also requires additional costs for updating the operating system, production of components for repair, etc. As a result, a large number of models almost always reduce profits due to rising costs. Therefore, many companies, including, for example, Apple and Google, prefer to limit their lineup to several models per year. Having recorded operating losses in 2016 and 2017, LG management also decided to reduce the range of new phones to reasonable sufficiency. At CES 2018, LG Electronics vice chairman Cho Sung-jin voiced this decision, answering a question about the release date of the next LG flagship. Indeed, in 2019, the company significantly reduced the number of new models, compensating for it with a significant improvement in the presented several models.
LG phones
Today, more than 600 companies produce smartphones. However, almost 80% of the world market belongs to ten major manufacturers, including South Korean Samsung (19%) and LG (3%), American Apple (12%), Finnish Nokia (1%) and Chinese Huawei (13%, including Honor), Xiaomi (9%), Oppo (9%), Vivo (8%), Lenovo (3%, including Motorola), Tecno (1%). As known, LG Electronics dominates the segment of OLED TVs. Naturally, the company also produces OLED displays for smartphones, using them in its models. However, some LG phones, including the flagship 2018 G7 ThinQ, use the IPS matrix without screen flicker due to the low-frequency PWM. Some ophthalmologists note the negative impact of this effect in terms of eye strain. On the other hand, this factor depends on reasonable sufficiency. Short-term flickering of an OLED screen is unlikely to harm vision, but after a few hours, your eyes will get tired from any screen. Despite the production of 5,000 matrices per day, the share of LG displays is negligible compared to Samsung, which stably dominates in this segment. However, LG Display sells OLED screens to Apple. In addition, the company is jointly developing OLED displays with Lufthansa Technik for use in aircraft. Modern LG models use Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets, UFS memory and LG UX UI. In autumn 2019, the company introduced the latest Android 10-based UX 9.0 UI. According to some experts, it is very similar to the Samsung One UI interface. But maybe this is due to the similarity of aesthetic tastes of South Korean designers. The company has already released beta versions with an upgrade to Android 10 for the LG G8 ThinQ and V50 ThinQ. Today the company offers flagship G and V series and a wide range of mid-budget Q and K models.
LG G7 ThinQ
The LG G7 ThinQ is the flagship of 2018.
The phone uses an ultra-bright (up to 1000 nits) 6.1 - inch IPS display with 3120 x 1440 resolution (564 ppi), providing extended DCI-P3 color gamut and HDR10 support. In addition, the model has an 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 (4 Kryo 385 Gold (Cortex-A75) with a frequency of 2.8 GHz for CPU intensive tasks and energy-efficient 4 Kryo 385 Silver (Cortex-A55) with a frequency of 1.8 GHz ), RAM 6 GB, dual 16-megapixel camera (f/1.6 + f/1.9) and supports 2 SIM cards. The company supplies a phone with Android 8.1. DTS-X technology provides excellent 3D stereo sound. In addition, its protection complies with Militare Standard 810G + IP68. Unfortunately, the battery capacity is only 3000 mAh.
LG V40 ThinQ
The LG V40 ThinQ became the second flagship of 2018.
The V40 uses a 6.4-inch P-OLED panel with 3120 x 1440 resolution (537 ppi). Traditionally for this technology, the maximum brightness does not exceed 504 nits, but the minimum is only 3 nits, providing excellent contrast. Like the G7, the model uses the 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845. Of course, the phone supports Dolby Vision, Always-on display and HDR10. ESS Technology's Saber ES9218PC DAC, resonant Boombox camera, DTS: X 3D Surround Sound for 7.1 channels, and a voice recorder with audio support in FLAC format provide traditionally superior sound quality. Of course, five cameras have become its main advantage. V40 uses a three-module main camera.
The aperture of the 12-megapixel optics sensor with large pixels reaches f/1.5. In addition, it has optical image stabilization. The second ultra-wide-angle module uses a 16-megapixel sensor with an aperture of f/1.9. The third 12-megapixel module with f/2.4 aperture has optical stabilization, phase autofocus and 2x optical zoom. Maybe this set is inferior to the top camera phones, including Huawei P20, Mate 20 Pro, Google Pixel 3 or Samsung Galaxy Note 9. But in general, the quality of shooting corresponds to a very high level. Moreover, the phone supports recording 4K video at 60 fps. Unfortunately, optical stabilization does not support this mode. In addition, the phone uses 8-megapixel standard module and 5-megapixel module with wide-angle optics for selfie.
LG G7 Fit
The LG G7 Fit was introduced at CES 2019. In fact, it has become the mid-budget version of the LG G7 ThinQ.
The phone uses a 6.1 - inch IPS (LTPS LCD) display with 3120 x 1440 resolution (QHD+) and a pixel density of 563 ppi. The model runs on Google Android 8.1. The main differences from the G7 include the use of the 4-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset (2016), the main camera with only one module and the lack of wireless charging. In addition, the phone provides video recording of only 2160 x 30fps (G7 - 2160 x 60fps), and the widest aperture is only f/2.20 (G7 - f/1.9 & f/1.6). However, Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 demonstrates excellent performance, gaining 170,000 points in AnTuTu Benchmark. In addition, the G7 Fit protection complies with the MIL-STD810G standard and IP68, model has Bluetooth 5, NFC chip and high-speed memory. Boombox technology provides great sound. Unfortunately, battery capacity is only 3000 mAh, which provides about 8 hours of video playback at maximum brightness. Normal games drain the battery in about 6 hours, complex games in 4 hours. Despite the Fast Charge inscription on the network adapter, the battery lasts 1 hour 30 minutes. Today, this model competes with ASUS Zenfone 5Z, Huawei P20, Honor 10 and Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018).
V50 ThinQ 5G
At MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2019, the company introduced its first 5G model.
Instead of folding models, LG offered a case with a built-in 6.2-inch display, which is connected via POGO-contacts on the rear panel.
Probably, today the assessment of the feasibility of a second screen or a folding display is still premature. But next year, consumers will already be able to appreciate this trend. The model uses a 6.4-inch OLED display with QHD+ resolution (537 ppi), Snapdragon 855 chipset, 6GB RAM, three-module main camera (16 MP (f/1.9) + 12 MP (F/1.5) + 12 MP (f/2.4 ) and front 8 MP + 5 MP. The battery capacity reaches 4000 mAh.The phone runs on Android 9.0 Pie, meets the MIL-STD 810G standard, and supports Dolby Vision, Always-on display and HDR10.
G8 and G8s ThinQ
In addition to the V50, at the MWC 2019 the company also introduced the G8 and G8s ThinQ.
In fact, the G8s is a slightly simplified version of the G8. A list of minor differences include displays, battery capacity and camera resolution. Models have innovative OLED displays that support Crystal Sound technology, which uses the screen as a resonating surface for sound output.
The G8 uses a 6.1-inch OLED FullVision (18: 9) screen with a 3120 × 1440 resolution (564 ppi), the main camera (16 MP (f/1.9) + 12 MP (f/1.5) + 12 MP (f/2.4 )) and the front 8 MP + Z Camera (ToF). Its battery capacity is 3500 mAh. G8s is equipped with a 6.2-inch OLED FullVision (18: 9) screen with 2248 x 1080 resolution, the main camera (13 MP + 12 MP + 12 MP) and a front 8 MP + Z Camera (ToF). Its battery capacity reaches 3550 mAh. Both models work under Android 9.0 Pie, use Snapdragon 855, 6GB RAM and 64/128GB. Front 3D-sensors with Time-of-Flight (ToF) technology provide Face Unlock and gesture control. Today, the Air Motion option provides only receiving incoming calls, volume control and screenshot. Apparently, in the future its capabilities will expand. In addition, the models have all the traditional flagship options, including a fingerprint scanner, Hand ID, protection against water and dust (IP68), level of protection against external influences (MIL-STD 810G), 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC , stereo speakers and boombox speaker.
Conclusion
In general, high reliability, innovative displays, great technical service, excellent sound quality and high-quality cameras ensure the high competitiveness of LG smartphones, allowing them to be among the leaders in the segment. In addition, the company's pronounced innovative orientation creates excellent prospects for future LG smartphones. As known, the company has already announced for 2020 new models under the names G10, G20, G30 and G40. This video offers concept and trailer with specs, features, price and release date of the new revolutionary mobile phone LG V60 ThinQ 5G (2020). Read the full article

The Rise of Skywalker: 10 Best Palpatine Moments So Far
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’s December release date is edging closer, with anticipation beginning to rise. And while fans can’t wait to see Rey and Kylo Ren face off again, the movie’s decision to bring Sheev Palpatine back into the fold over 30 years on from his apparent death in Return of the Jedi is what has set tongues wagging among even the most critical of viewers.
RELATED: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: 10 Showdowns We Want To See
How Palpatine will return is a mystery, but there’s no denying he’s the best bad guy in Star Wars history. With that in mind, we now take a look at his top 10 moments throughout the franchise so far, explaining our choices as we go along.
10 The Grooming Begins
Palpatine knew Anakin Skywalker was strong with the force when he meets his future apprentice during 1999’s Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Anakin is just a child at this point, but having already excelled at Podracing and helping the Republic tackle the Trade Federation, he was certainly no ordinary boy. And Palpatine begins his charm offensive towards Jake Lloyd’s character during this film.
Right at the very end, Palpatine says "we will watch your career with great interest", suggesting he had his heart set on making the teenager his apprentice right from the very off. The fact he says it with a mischievous smile, too, shows that he was confident in being able to transform Anakin into an evil Sith Lord. The grooming begins.
9 Starting the Clone Wars
With Padme Amidala going into hiding during Attack of the Clones following two unsuccessful attempts on her life, it’s left to Jar Jar Binks to act as her eyes and ears within the Senate. While Jar Jar is admittedly kind, he leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to brains and, with him in charge, Palpatine’s plot against democracy is able to take off.
Jar Jar ends up giving Palpatine more powers and he uses those to commence the Clone Wars right at the very end of the movie. This allows him to continue pitching both the Republic and their enemy forces against each other, until the war would come to be a distraction while he carried out his dastardly plan to rule the galaxy.
8 Telling Anakin to Kill Count Dooku
At the start of Revenge of the Sith, Anakin Skywalker is hellbent on rescuing Palpatine from the clutches of Count Dooku who, besides kidnapping his father figure, had chopped the Jedi’s hand off during a showdown on Geonosis during Attack of the Clones.
Anakin and Dooku face off again and, when Kenobi is taken out of the battle, Skywalker embraces the dark side and allows his rage and anger to guide him to victory. He stops short of murdering his enemy when he manages to cut both of Dooku’s hands off but Palpatine, menacingly, urges him to do the deed. He duly does and it’s another key moment in Anakin’s slide towards the dark side.
RELATED: Star Wars: Kylo Ren's 10 Best Moments (So Far)
7 Murdering the Jedi
Prior to Revenge of the Sith, we’d never ever seen Palpatine engage an enemy in lightsaber combat. After all, being so powerful and having force lightning in his weapon's repertoire, why would he ever need to draw a crimson blade? Well, it turns out in the final chapter of George Lucas’ prequel trilogy he’s actually sublime at fighting as well.
When confronted by Mace Windu, Kit Fisto, Agen Kolar, and Saesee Tiin he doesn’t flinch. And he slays Kisto, Kolar, and Tiin with minimal fuss, dispatching them as if they were younglings rather than established members of the Jedi council. He then proceeds to have a big duel with Windu and shows another of his best qualities...
6 Manipulating Anakin Skywalker
It looks as if Windu is going to murder Palpatine, despite it not being the Jedi way. Samuel L. Jackson’s character believes it’s too dangerous to leave a person with as much sway and influence as the Sith Lord live and is about to slice through the dark side user, before Anakin Skywalker steps in to lob his hand off.
Palpatine manipulates Anakin. He pretends to be a weak old man and references Skywalker’s marriage to Padme Amidala, a secret unknown by the Jedi. Ultimately, the conflicted Republic hero chooses to back the Sith Lord due to the fact he can save the person he loves most from dying and this is the scene where Darth Vader is figuratively born.
RELATED: Star Wars: Rey's 10 Best Moments (So Far)
5 Battling Yoda
Palpatine is Emperor and a man very much on top when Yoda pays him a visit in his Senator’s office. The little green Jedi shows his discontent for the Sith Lord by mercilessly knocking out one his guards and proceeding to fight his enemy with the sake of the galaxy on the line.
And the Sith Lord loves it. He engages Yoda in a fight using both his lightsaber and force lightning, eventually overcoming his opponent and living to fight another day. He’s pure evil within the sequence, goading the Jedi and expressing a confidence that his new apprentice, Darth Vader, would go on to eclipse. His happiness is short-lived, however, when he senses Anakin's imminent downfall on the lava planet of Mustafar.
4 The Smile
Nothing points out someone's evil nature like smiling at the misfortune of others. And Emperor Palpatine does exactly that, allowing his lips to form a menacing grin when he informs Darth Vader that his wife Padme, despite his vow to save her life, had died following his sudden attack on her.
This scene gives us chills - and the theories that arose afterward are partly to blame. Some believe that Palpatine actually drained Padme’s life in order to ensure Anakin's survival, who had sustained a damaging defeat at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar. Whether this is true has never been clarified, but the smile, whatever it means, is certainly a symbol of villainy.
3 Goading Luke Skywalker
For most of the original trilogy, Palpatine is rarely seen with Darth Vader. However, he is introduced in The Empire Strikes Back before returning for a prominent role during Return of the Jedi.
At this point, Palpatine tries to turn Luke Skywalker against his father. He wickedly goads Luke, telling him that his friends are destined to die on the planet of Endor where the Rebel Alliance is facing off against the Empire and their thousands of Stormtroopers. He also insists that it’s Luke’s destiny to take the same path as his father, lauding the fact he’s been able to keep Vader by his side for so long. While it doesn’t work, it’s certainly additional proof of his wicked ways.

2 His Death
While we know Emperor Palpatine will be in The Rise of Skywalker one way or another, he definitely seems dead at the time of writing. And his demise, suffered at the hands of Darth Vader during Return of the Jedi, ranks as one of the most iconic scenes in Star Wars history.
It’s the moment where Vader, arguably the most iconic character within the whole franchise, changes sides. For years he’d worked as Palpatine’s puppet but the sight of his master inflicting such pain and suffering on Luke is what ultimately convinces him to take action, throwing the cackling bad guy down the chute of the Death Star and restoring peace to the galaxy as a result.
1 His Laugh In The Trailer
Disney really, really needs Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to deliver when it releases later this year. The Last Jedi was good critically but was panned by audiences to such an extent that many viewers stayed away when Solo: A Star Wars Story hit theatres just mere months later. The common consensus among fans at this moment in time is that, if the final movie of the sequel trilogy flops, all three movies will be remembered as one, big, waste of time.
But Palpatine’s laugh heard at the end of The Rise of Skywalker teaser trailer, has got people interested again. That distinctive cackle was so unexpected, but so welcome, that Disney may end up saving the sequel trilogy after all. Only time will tell.

The 2019 Oscars will feature the first new category since the animated feature prize joined the ceremony in 2002: Next February, the award for Best Popular Film (which is still a nebulously defined, hard-to-understand title) will join the other 24 categories for the first time ever.
But if the Academy is going to start awarding prizes in new categories, there are so many other things it could be rewarding, things that actually have something to do with the craft of making films, not just an arbitrary distinction between “popular” films and everything else.
Some of those categories are ones that Hollywood folks have been requesting for ages. Others have only recently become trendy causes. But if the Oscars want to expand, here are six categories they should prioritize over “Best Popular Film.”
Finally, an Oscar for Mission: Impossible. Paramount
If the Academy’s (dubious) goal in creating a “Best Popular Film” category of some kind is to bring more recognition to films with broader audience appeal — and to get people interested in the Oscars who gravitate toward big-budget fare — stunt coordination would be a stellar addition to the roster of categories. As with some of the other technical races, like those for Costume Design, Makeup, and Special Effects, stunts are usually the purview of films with a big enough budget to pay for them.
And as with those other technical categories, if the stunts are great, you notice them. The people who coordinate the stunts are usually seasoned stunt performers themselves, and their job is multifaceted: Often they both cast the stunt performers (which requires finding both a specific skill set and, in some cases, physical resemblance to the actor they’re doubling) and figure out how to execute the stunt safely and with maximum impact. That deserves recognition — especially since great stunts can and often do elevate a movie with otherwise predictable plotting, dialogue, and even performances into something memorably mind-blowing.
Some recent possible winners of this category: Darrin Prescott (Baby Driver, Black Panther, the John Wick movies), Wade Eastwood (Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation, Edge of Tomorrow), Sam Hargrave (Atomic Blonde, Captain America: Civil War), Glenn Suter (Mad Max: Fury Road)
Imagine Moonlight winning an Oscar for how effortlessly it found mostly unknown actors to play instantly iconic parts. A24
There’s long been a call for the Oscars to add a “Best Ensemble Cast” award, similar to the Screen Actors Guild’s ensemble prizes for the casts of films and TV shows. But ensemble awards often struggle to figure out which actors to include and which to leave behind when it’s time to hand out prizes. (The SAG Awards make incredibly arbitrary cutoffs — like if you share a billing card with another actor, you’re ineligible — because there’s basically no other way to adjudicate such a prize.)
And then there’s the problem of, if all of the actors in a cast win the ensemble prize, do they all automatically become Oscar winners? The Academy likes to make the idea of winning an acting prize somewhat selective, which would go out the window in this scenario.
But you know what a good way to reward an ensemble cast where each and every actor was perfectly chosen would be? Awarding the casting agents who selected those actors for their roles. This would help explain the process of how your favorite actors wind up in certain movies, and winners would probably alternate between movies where a bunch of famous actors were terrifically suited to their specific roles (like The Shape of Water) to movies where the casting directors had to find unknowns to perfectly inhabit the characters (like Moonlight).
There’s danger that this award would just become the “largest cast” award — something like The Post might be hard to avoid honoring — but hey, it’s not like other Oscar categories don’t occasionally award the most of something, rather than the best.
Some recent possible winners of this category: Robin D. Cook for The Shape of Water; Yesi Ramirez for Moonlight; Kerry Barden, John Buchan, Jason Knight, and Paul Schnee for Spotlight; Beth Sepko for Boyhood; Lindsay Graham and Mary Vernieu for American Hustle
Oscar! Winner! Jim! Cummings! As! Winnie! The! Pooh! Laurie Sparham/Disney
Voice acting is most frequently associated with animated movies, so there’s an argument to be made that honoring voice acting separately from the “real” acting categories further ghettoizes a medium that already has a hard time breaking into the top-tier Oscar categories. But that argument overlooks the fact that, in addition to its rich history in animation, voice acting is an increasingly important part of modern live-action film.
This is especially true as movies continue to embrace the use of computer-generated characters within a live-action environment. This year alone, a Voice Performance category would hold the potential for an ursine showdown between Ben Whishaw (for Paddington 2) and journeyman Jim Cummings (for Christopher Robin), not to mention a handful of big names who provided CGI character voices for Avengers: Infinity War (Bradley Cooper, Carrie Coon, and, erm, Vin Diesel? Maybe not that last one.)
But more crucially, this category would also be a way to honor less recognizable faces who have nonetheless been integral in the characterization of many cultural icons, like the aforementioned Cummings (who’s been voicing Winnie the Pooh since 1988, in addition to several dozen other animated characters) and puppeteering legend Frank Oz, responsible not only for most of your favorite Muppets, but Yoda himself. Hell, the opportunity to give Frank Oz an Oscar should on its own be reason enough for this category to exist.
Some recent possible winners of this category: Frank Oz (as Yoda in Star Wars Episode VII: The Last Jedi), Dwayne Johnson (as Maui in Moana), Ben Kingsley (as Archibald Snatcher in The Boxtrolls), Phyllis Smith (as Sadness in Inside Out), Scarlett Johansson (as Samantha in Her), Alan Tudyk (as King Candy in Wreck-It Ralph)
Andy Serkis should have at least an Oscar nomination by now for his groundbreaking motion-capture work. 20th Century Fox
It’s impossible to propose a motion-capture Oscar without talking about Andy Serkis, whose work as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings films helped establish the notion that a motion-capture performance could be just that — a performance — rather than a technical exercise. His subsequent mo-cap roles in King Kong and especially the excellent recent Planet of the Apes trilogy have ensured that every year in which there is an Andy Serkis mo-cap performance has been a year in which people wonder whether this is the year the Academy will deign to nominate him in the acting category.
Serkis himself has said that the Academy has been nudging its members toward recognizing motion-capture performance, so why not just cut to the chase and make it a breakout acting category?
And it wouldn’t just be the Honorary Andy Serkis award, either (though he likely would and should be a winner in this category). Motion capture — and its close cousin, motion reference, which could be folded into the same Oscar category — has become an increasingly common component of filmmaking in recent years.
Several of the most, ahem, popular films of the last decade have relied heavily on actors doing motion capture, from Lord of the Rings and Avatar to this year’s Ready Player One and Avengers: Infinity War. So if the Academy is indeed looking for ways to recognize more blockbuster films, why not honor a performance medium that’s increasingly at the heart of those very films?
Some recent possible winners of this category: Andy Serkis (as Caesar in War for the Planet of the Apes and/or as Snoke in Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Lupita Nyong’o (as Maz Kanata in Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Sean Gunn and/or Bradley Cooper (as Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy), Zoe Saldana (as Neytiri in Avatar)
Lady Bird was director Greta Gerwig’s solo feature film directorial debut, and she didn’t win anything for it. Let’s create a category to rectify THAT issue. A24
It’s hard enough to make a great movie, but coming right out of the gate with a stellar debut is especially difficult. Most first-time feature directors — even those who had thriving careers as actors or in television — are still relatively unknown quantities to the often risk-averse purse-string controllers, which means lower budgets, tighter timeframes, and possibly less artistic freedom.
Many first-time directors end up going the indie route with limited budgets — and when their films break through the noise, it feels like a miracle. A new director often rattles the cages, challenging conventional films in a way that audiences and critics alike respond to. And it usually takes a fresh vision and distinctive voice to pull that off.
But without the name recognition of more established directors, who command attention before their films have even been seen, a first film doesn’t always get the Oscar campaign push it might need. A Best First Film category would even the playing field, and also help bring attention to movies by a more diverse set of filmmakers than the Oscars have typically honored, setting them up for future success.
Some recent possible winners of this category: Lady Bird, Get Out, The Act of Killing, The Babadook, The Witch, Dear White People
[embedded content]
Hear us out. At this point in the zeitgeist, trailers can often have as much cultural impact as the films they are made to promote. The best of them can spawn entirely new trailer sub-genres and continue to impact the cultural conversation years later.
Don’t believe us? Look at the Ringer’s recent bracket for the greatest trailer ever made, which ended in a battle between two of the most iconic trailers in history, Inception and The Social Network. Both examples show how a trailer can shift our cultural language and our cinematic language, while still remaining relevant nearly a decade later — all thanks to powerful editing, an almighty backing track, and a spark of creative innovation. That’s the kind of feat that can get diluted over the course of two hours.
The omission of the technical awards presentation from the Oscars’ televised ceremony means there’s even more need for a Best Trailer category, since trailers are a synthesis of technical achievements, editing, sound design, and cinematic magic.
Plus, the creators of the best trailers go overlooked even as their films get love. Not many people know that the iconic Inception BWAAAAAM, which originated from its trailer, was created not by Inception composer Hans Zimmer but by the trailer composer, Zack Hemsey.
Are you outraged that this information has been kept from you for the past eight years? There’s a simple solution: Add a Best Trailer category to the Oscars and give more geniuses their due.
Some recent possible winners of this category: Skyfall, Mad Max: Fury Road, Gravity, Blade Runner: 2049, It Comes At Night, Get Out
Original Source -> Forget Best Popular Film. Here are 6 new categories the Oscars actually need.

Star Wars: 10 'Legends' SOLO Just Returned To Canon
The Star Wars Expanded Universe may have been rendered ‘Legends,’ but Han Solo’s movie just added a TON back into the franchise’s canon!
WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Solo: A Star Wars Story
The expanded world of Star Wars may have been rendered non-canonical when Disney took ownership, but Solo just brought a new batch of fan-favorite stories back into canon. That may not seem like much of a development for casual fans of the films, or even the comics books and video games. But for the passionate fans who spent countless hours soaking up every Star Wars novel for more lore and history, it’s one step closer to seeing their favorite tales given new life.
We can’t promise that Lucasfilm has returned ancient histories of Sith, Jedi, and cosmic empires with the intention of exploring them further. But considering how beloved some of the storytelling being folded back into canon already is, that gesture alone might be enough. Whether you saw Solo or not, these updates shouldn’t be missed.
They may be blink-and-you-miss it additions, or details reveal in supplemental materials for the film, but make no mistake: these Star Wars “Legends” are now the franchise’s official canon.
10 THE LEGACY OF XIM THE DESPOT
Its fitting that of all the Star Wars novels and lore to be referenced in Han Solo’s origin movie, the book trilogy of Han Solo Adventures should get some of the best nods. In the case of the massive crystal skull displayed in Dryden’s trophy room, it isn’t just a jab at George Lucas and Harrison Ford’s famous Indiana Jones movie being made. According to the Official Guide to the film, the object in question is the “myrtag crystal masthead of Xim the Despot.”
The famous cosmic conqueror lived around 25,000 years before these movies, taking over the systems of the Tion Cluster (a major location in Star Wars: The Old Republic) with the first army of battle droids the galaxy had seen. And with each one bearing the symbol of his rule – a skull – this Easter Egg is more than fitting.
So it seems we can add those chapters of his history to the new Star Wars Canon… but it’s not the only part of Xim’s legacy Dryden is concerned with.
9 TAOZIN GRUB
Another one of Dryden Vos’s prized possessions that can actually be glimpsed in the movie is the Taozin Grub, a large cross between a beetle, a centipede, and… well, a grub. It’s preserved, or at least seems to be, and according to the Official Guide was a gift to Dryden from an Imperial Moff (a gesture that makes more sense after learning of the Empire’s connection to Crimson Dawn in the film’s final act). The Taozin shell is famous for resisting blastersaand lights Amber’s, but if the Grub were alive, then Dryden could’ve introduced the audience to the expanded universe of Force-Sensitive creatures.
In the case of the Taozin Grub (so named due to its size, since a full grown Taozin is at least a meter long) that attunement to The Force actually renders them invisible to Force Users, and are able to make anyone or anything connected to then similarly invisible. The creature was introduced in the 2001 novel Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter, with the former Sith explaining how the negative space in The Force was a unique phenomenon. So unique, in fact, that Sith Inquistors operating under Darth Vader were apparently outfitted with amulets made from Taozin, so as to remain undetected by their Jedi Prey.
They may be less famous as the Force-nullifying Ysalamir featured in the Thrawn Trilogy… but it’s a start.
8 MANDALORIAN RALLY MASTER ARMOR
Now, the item most likely to get people’s attention: the large, red, Mandalorian armor on full display in the background of every scene in Vos’s prized trophy room. Some fans assumed that its presence in early photographs was a hint towards Dryden’s Mandalorian heritage, but the armor is far from the standard suit worn by Boba Fett, Jango, or any other modern Mabdalorian. In fact, this armor is a callback to the Knights of the Old Republic fiction previously assumed to be non-canon after Disney purchased Lucasfilm.
Fans will remember it as one variation of Mandalorian Neo-Crusader armor, adopted by the warrior race by the Great Sith War (thousands of years before the Star Wars movies). The standard troops wore blue armor into battle, Field Marshals wore gold, and frontline veterans wore silver. However, the crimson was reserved for Rally Masters, meant to stand out in battle and untie the infantry surrounding them. This history is confirmed in Solo: The Official Guide, referring to the suit as the movie version of “Rally Master Armor.”
7 RWOOKRRORRO, THE WOOKIEE CAPITAL
The shot of Chewbacca and another Wookiee in trailers for Solo sparked instant debate, with fans wondering if Lucasfilm was finally going to bring Chewie’s wife Malla into movie canon (previously seen only in the Star Wars Christmas Special). But alas, the smaller Wookiee is just one of a handful of slaves Chewie rescues when the heroes head to the spice mines of Kessel.
If you’re paying attention, the Wookiee’s fellow slaves actually refer to him by name, “Sagwa,” multiple times during the breakout. But the real addition to the Star Wars movie lore comes in Solo: The Official Guide, when Sagwa is singled out as hailing from the city of Rwookrrorro on the planet Kashyyyk.
Another settlement on the Wookiee homeworld isn’t a shock in itself, but most casual fans won’t know anything beyond the actual name of the planet (and the diehards will know how to actually spell it). But before the planet was officially given its name, Heir to the Empire author Timothy Zahn pitched “Rwookrrorro” as an option. The idea was turned down, so Zahn made it the capital of the planet, instead.
6 THE TEMPLE OF EXAR KUN
When the Star Wars movies revealed that Luke Skywalker had taken only a small handful of students before exiling himself to Ahch-To, fans were crushed. Well, fans of the Jedi Academy novels by Kevin J. Anderson, which had followed Luke’s efforts to found a new Jedi Temple on Yavin 4… and the dark forces that sought to taint his new apprentices.
That sinister influence turned out to be the spirit of Exar Kun, eventually revealed to be a Jedi who had fallen, pursued the ways of the Sith, and declared himself a Sith Lord. When the forces of ‘good’ eventually converged on his immaculate temple – built from obsidian by the enslaved inhabitants of Yavin 4 – Exar Kun channeled the lives of his slaves to preserve his spirit within it. there it sat for four millennia, until his crypt was opened, and Luke’s young Jedi showed him a way out.
RELATED: Star Wars Characters You Didn’t Know Are Joining The Canon
Apparently, the minds at Lucasfilm have decided the story of Exar Kun is too good to erase from canono, as well. Luke may not have founded a temple on Yavin 4, but pay attention to the small table in Dryden Vos’s office built on top of a slab of black stone. The inscriptions visible in heiroglyphics and incantations are confirmed in the film’s official art book to be Sith markings, since the slab of ebony itself is pulled from the Temple of Exar Kun.
5 THE ADVENTURES OF LANDO CALRISSIAN
Typically, the writers of modern Star Warsfiction try to keep their nods to lore or stories now rendered ‘Legends’ somewhat subtle (most of the time, anyway). But then there’s Lando Calrissian. Since subtlety isn’t his style, the owner of the Millennium Falcon brings his expanded universe back into canon through an actual novelization, recorded via hologram as “The Calrissian Chronicles.”
Most of the references made are to L. Neil Smith’s trilogy of Lando adventures, including the hero referencing the Sharu in his holo-recording, right up to the point that he almost utters “mindharp.” But in Dryden Vos’s collection, fans can also catch a glimpse of several Life Crystals, native to the planet Rafa. The precious gems first appeared in The Mindharp of Sharu, later returning in The Flamewind of Oseon (where Lando claims to have taken ownership of “a real money pit”).
Even though the Life Crystals were revealed to drain intelligence of sentient beings around them, Dryden has a handful of the priceless objects near at hand.
4 THE DROCH
Officially referred to in the Solo guide as a “cerulean droch from Felucia,” the large beetle can also be spotted thanks to its silhouette, marked by its many legs. At first glance, it may seem a scarab or rare insect like the many others in Dryden Vos’s trophy room. But believe it or not, this bug’s species is responsible for more deaths in the galaxy than almost any other ruler. It proves Dryden’s nerve, as well. Because centuries ago in the Star Wars universe, these tiny Drochs wiped out billions when their spread was misunderstood as a new ailment: the Death Seed Plague.
The truth of the disease was revealed in the novel Planet of Twilight, when the original trilogy heroes discovered the Droch – tiny beetles that burrow into a host, disguise themselves as natural tissue, and feed on their life force until their skin sheds, and the host dies. Reproducing and gaining sentience with more and more consumed hosts, the Droch plague was almost impossible to stop.
Does one Droch’s appearance here mean Dzym, the Droch who evolved to look almost human, and lead his species to take over the galaxy, is also canon? We’re going to say yes.
3 THE QUEEN OF RANROON
Finally we get to the entire reason that Xim, a cosmic, despotic ruler actually became a person if interest to Han Solo in the first place. After all, if a job doesn’t promise to win him either a ton of credits or a boatload of notoriety, the eodds are low that Han and Chewie are interested. Which is exactly where the Queen of Ranroon comes in: the legendary treasure ship of Xim the Despot, lost to all civilization on a distant world. The main goal of the novel Han Solo and the Lost Legacy, as well.
It’s a classic adventure premise if there ever was one – swap out the spaceship for a wooden one, and it’s a pirate story just as easy. In the book Hand and Chewie really did find the lost treasure ship of Xim the Despot. But they could have used some help from Dryden Vos, who has a dataplaque containing what is basically a stellar version of a treasure map. Why he has such a clue and has yet to cash in on the hunt is anyone’s guess.
That being said, Dryden IS obscenely wealthy… but is he as willing to believe in legend and myth as his Crimson Dawn master, the former Sith Maul? He does have Xim’s crystal skull already…
2 TERÄS KÄSI
Qi’ra shows that she really has done some terrible things in her past – and probably with her bare hands – when she disarms and defeats the head of the Kessel mining operation in a matter of seconds (completely stunning L3-37). As she soon explains, the martial art just put on display is Teräs Käsi which she has learned under the service of Dryden Vos.
The martial art was introduced to the Star Wars mythology with Steve Perry’s Shadows of the Empire novel in 1996. At the time, it was introduced as a fighting style created specifically to oppose the Jedi (or, in theory, and Force User). For all the action in the Star Wars world, there isn’t much actual hand-to-hand combat to speak of. Teräs Käsi changes all that, granting users the ability to overwhelm a Force-sensitive opponent, and take even them by surprise.
The martial art gained its highest level of notoriety thanks to a fighting video game released for the PlayStation, but even now, actually seeing the fighting in motion is hard to come by. Which is probably why Qi’ra practice takes place… off-screen.
1 DANCING GODDESS OF THE GODOAN
Fans of the original Star Wars Comic series are in luck as well, with the actors of Solo actually interacting with one prop pulled directly out of the comics. The comic in question is Star Wars #99, “Touch of the Goddess.” The prop is the prized statue dubbed the Dancing Goddess, sacred and lifesaving for the aliens of Godo.
The story reveals that the Godoans practice a faith that makes their worship of sacred statues necessary for the survival of their race. So when the statues go missing, they’re not surprised to see an illness ravage their entire people. Eventually, Han realizes that the statues and their temple are a type of machine designed to make their world habitable. And the statue of the Dancing Goddess, a green sculpture roughly in the shape of a dancing figure, is a prized artifact current in the collection of one Lando Calrissian.
The Dancing Goddess can be seen in Dryden Vos’s room, slightly different from the comics, but made of the same green glass. The best glimpse comes in the final fight, when it’s smashed in the commotion… the Godoans will be remembered fondly.
