literally the easiest way to make someone care about a character and make them feel well-rounded beyond basic traits like personality, sexuality, ethnicity, etc, is to give them an actual character arc, and it’s shocking how many people do not seem to fully realize this

you cannot just cram a bunch of tropes. tropes are not the main event, they are tools to tell the story you wish to tell. emotional impact comes from the lead up, so you can’t just jump ahead and expect the payoff to work. “I want this character to just ___ already!” but they’re not there yet. that’s where the arc comes in - how do they get there?

and! most importantly, and this is something I really want people to think about when writing - the most important relationship your character should have, always, is with the world and society around them. defining your character purely through their interactions with other characters are, I find, how a lot of female characters end up feeling flat or not engaging with the themes as much as the male characters, and also how queer and non-white characters wind up as devices for other characters’ development instead of being more fleshed out

something something artist!robin who loses touch with everyone in hawkins besides steve and goes on ten years later to make a whole art exhibit inspired by her trauma from the upside down and the bunker.

she’s praised across the board, especially for her depiction of a curly brunette with eyes you get lost in. always putting that character to the front, highlighting her like a hero. like a god.

robin is shyly drinking champagne on the balcony of the museum when a woman with her hair in a big claw clip and sunglasses approaches her. robin didn’t want to talk to her but her manager told her that she should try to be friendly to everyone, should the person want to purchase some art.

“are you the artist?” the woman asks.

“i am, yeah," robin gives a weak smile.

“big night for you.”

robin nods. “this is all…great but it’s so overwhelming too.”

“sure, i get it,” the woman replies.

robin is about to quip that no, she really doesn’t get it when the woman pulls off her sunglasses and robin sees those blue eyes for the first time in ten years. the ones that had her 18-year-old heart racing. she committed to putting them on any canvas she could get her hands on just to have them live somewhere else that wasn't behind her eyelids. they're here, they're real, and they're looking at her.

but nancy’s eyes were swimming with tears. robin opens her mouth to apologize but nancy places one finger on her lips.

“no one has ever seen me like that,” nancy whispers with astonishment. “i’m never the hero. i’m the annoying little reporter who doesn't let anything rest."

robin shakes her head furiously. nancy’s hand drops but they’re too close not to touch each other. robin hesitantly opens her arms and nancy plunges herself in them. robin gently takes nancy’s hair out of the clip and lets it clatter to the floor. she pets those soft curls as nancy tucks herself further into robin’s neck.

“not to me. not to me, you’re not,” robin whispers.

This reference sheet has been in the makes for around 2 months or so now, it's honestly been really slow progress due to me starting my first ever job ontop of ADHD. I noticed that my ADHD symptoms have been worsening due to getting a job, and I currently do not have access to medication or anything of the sort. Regardless, this character is a love letter to myself; over the past year or so I have been trying to come to terms with who or what I am. I'm going to be honest, this really means accepting that there are some things that I cannot put a label on. I wrote Bigender on the reference because I think it comes close to describing what I experience, but I honestly could not write it down in a comprehensible way, nor could I do this with my sexuality, seeing how closely it ties to my autism, and how I navigate intimacy. Just have fun with it. The past few months I have really developed a love for bovids, and I think that has been a very big step in accepting myself as well. People kinda look at a lot of them as dumb or unassuming or even dangerous, they are a little frightened and sometimes see them as gross or unsightly or dumb. I relate to this... they're big and gentle and cute to me though. And I think that I am similar to this. I feel like a cow a lot, or maybe a deer, or goat, or sheep... I don't know too much about them just yet, but I admire them so much. Please follow @bovineblogger SO many great posts. And while you are at it...please follow my close friends... @angelkids @thathandsomeangel @dragonboness. They have been here with me for maybe 6 years now as my best friends. They have watched me explore, and they have supported me for so long. It's mentioned in the ID, but the friendship bracelets my fursona is wearing are all based off of them. They are the greatest. I'd also like to mention that my sona would always have to be a mixture of animals. I feel like a lot of animals, personally, and though I don't use labels like therian or otherkin much, I feel like understanding those experiences would help anyone understand a little more how I feel about bovids, dragons, birds, etcetera. I hope that if you took the time to read this, you understand how much this process meant to me. I have been trying my best to understand the world around me and myself in turn, and I hope that you can as well. The best way to fight fear is with your undying curiosity. It pays off so well. Please, explore the wonderful world...and explore yourself as well. Maybe some things will always remain a mystery...but when you are always curious, it becomes easier to accept the unknown, and not to discredit it.

also the colours are some i believe she would use for a Halloween outfit, and she loves stars so the skirt was what got her for sure
