Memorial weekend: graduation party, brunches, bbqing. ❤ And yes, our friends have a jungle gym in the living room in lieu of furniture. So much fun.

#112: One Week Of Living “Furniture Free”
Have you heard of the Furniture Free movement? Well, it piqued my interest so much that we’re challenging ourselves to try it for seven days (Sherry reluctantly agreed). So what does it mean? And how does it promise to improve our lives and homes? Will it make us happier or just annoyed? Plus, we were lucky to skate by without any damage from Hurricane Florence, but it did sent us on a rollercoaster of panic, relief, and then more panic, which left a big impression on us – and led to a pretty great reminder. We also share how we navigated a weird challenge involving holes in the duplex, and why Sherry’s getting a tattoo.
You can download this episode from Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, TuneIn Radio, and Spotify – or listen to it below! Then use this page to check out any links, notes, or photos we referenced. Note: If you’re reading in a feed reader, you may have to click through to the post to see the player.
WHAT’S NEW
If you’d like to help those affected by Hurricane Florence, this is a great round-up of organizations you can donate to (we chose to give to the Foundation for the Carolinas relief fund).
You can also read more about our last big hurricane here in Richmond back in 2011, Hurricane Irene, which left us powerless for several days and dropped a large tree on our neighbor’s house.
The photo above is from last Saturday in Cape Charles, when it was just overcast but pretty much devoid of wind and rain. The water was a little higher than normal and at some point on Friday it must’ve washed over most of the beach (see the darker, damp sand on the right side of the picture?) but otherwise there wasn’t any evidence of the hurricane.
And in the graphic below you can see how the storm’s track managed to miss us entirely while doing a complete loop around us (I marked Richmond and Cape Charles with yellow dots) – except for the tornados it brought on it’s way out, of course.
But in lighter news, here’s the article about the trend in house tattoos – and below are some of the examples they shared.
And here are some of the types of tattoos that Sherry has been pinning. I don’t have sources for all of these, unfortunately (here’s 1, 3, & 6) – but I labeled them all to make it easier for your to tell Sherry “my favorite is number X!”
Furniture Free Living
Apartment Therapy’s article “I Tried Furniture-Free Living for a Week to See if I Felt Healthier” is where I learned about this trend – and the author’s conclusions are really interesting! Scary Mommy’s article on it is also a good read.
Apparently it’s not that new either. Here’s a 2016 profile of one family in Good Housekeeping.
The photos shown below are a few that I found while searching #furniturefree and #furniturefreeliving on Instagram. For the living room below, the homeowner renovated her condo to specifically incorporate a furniture-free lifestyle.
And again, since Sherry and I are trying on a “light” version of this for one week, our general parameters are:
Work standing up (buh-bye desk chairs)
No sitting on living room furniture while the children are awake (meaning we can still decompress there at the very end of the day – but otherwise it’s sitting on the floor/standing/squatting/kneeling/etc – but no couch)
Try to eat meals standing (when it makes sense – not at restaurants!) – Sherry hates this one the most
*Our children are still able to use our furniture as they normally would
We’ll report back next week to let you know how it turned out!

We’re Digging
You can see in the photo above what we meant about the holes in the duplex front doors being all over the place. Like, why? WHY?!?
This is the handleset we ordered that makes everything look even and covers all of the old holes. We did NOT end up with a photo of them installed in time, so here’s one we found online. We got them in the dark bronze color.
Lastly, you can find the Slow Burn podcast wherever you listen to our podcast. We burned through Season 1 (pun! ha!) about Nixon’s resignation last month and the second season about Clinton’s impeachment is currently underway. It has been such a fascinating way to better understand these moments in American history.
If you’re looking for something we’ve dug in a past episode, but don’t remember which show notes to click into, here’s a master list of everything we’ve been digging from all of our past episodes. You can also see all the books we’ve recommended on our Book Club page.
And lastly, a big thank you to Annie Selke for sponsoring this episode. Their 20% off Labor Day sale is running August 29 – September 5th across their entire website. Plus, you can visit annieselke.com/YHL to get a look at their new fall collection.
Thanks for listening, guys!

I am so excited about my new dining room table! You may or may not have noticed the glaring absence of something. Like, chairs. ~ My health goals are far, far, far bigger than looking good naked (although that’s a fantastic side-effect of healthy living for sure). I aim to live a high quality life at whatever age I am lucky enough to reach, even if I reach triple digits. My definition of a high quality life means the ability to have an intelligent conversation because my brain is functioning optimally, being able to get up easily from a chair and from the floor, be able to move and live independently, be active outside of the home, take care of my own business in the bathroom (🚽 🚿), and travel if I so desire. Achieving that goal means being proactive NOW by taking care of my body in the best ways possible. And healthy living goes beyond what I choose to put into my mouth, but the conscious, mindful decisions I make each and every day about the way I live my life. My thoughts. My actions. My food choices. My exercise. It ALL counts. ~ Back to my dining room table. I’ve decided to try out a minimal furniture concept in my new home, including a Japanese-style dining room table with no chairs. Say what? You may have heard the phrase, “sitting is the new smoking”. We are not moving enough; we are not moving functionally; and we are sitting way too damn much! The human body simply was not designed to be sitting in a chair all day long. My new #furniturefree concept forces me to get up and down from the floor more frequently, more more functionally, and encourages me to sit less. ~ I’m not sure yet whether furniture-free will be my forever way of life, but I am enjoying this #livingexperiment and perfectly okay with being the resident weirdo for now. ~ #lifeonpurpose #healthyliving #healthylifestyle #healthcoach #fdn #functionalmovement #functionalmedicine #functionalhealth #functionalliving #movemore #sitless #fitness #sandiego (at San Diego, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrOq2V-HAVI/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1fjgsgakj3fxr

Some backstory...
Going furniture free allowed us to test the theory of being in a small home.
We bought our house in 2014 and in 2017 when we sold it, we got rid of most of our furniture and paired down a lot of the junk that had accumulated. I had been really curious to take a stab at the “furniture free” idea I read about from Katy Bowman. (Check out “Move Your DNA” or her blog for more info). I was also very overwhelmed by the constant cleaning and CRAP that accumulated all over the house. The mess was literally drowning me every day I spent at home with my daughters. My husband and I felt like every weekend was spent maintaining the house (cleaning, grass cutting, weeding, minor repairs). Over the 3 years we lived there, I also found that we were always on the floor playing with our kids rather than sitting on the sofas. We never watched TV (didn’t have cable since 2013 and at some point we even canceled our Netflix account) other than putting a show on for my older toddler. Which I admit, this came in very handy as I navigated the world of staying home with a newborn and toddler. But we found that because she got screentime, she often requested it at times we didn’t want to give it to her (you know, when we wanted to get out of the house). So in our effort to cut her off, we didn’t even take our one TV with us when we moved. Plus the thing was 12 years old and on it’s way out anyway… our logic was “if we find that we miss the TV, we can get a new one for fairly cheap.” (We’ll see how football season goes with no TV…)
We brought three beds, two dressers, a dining table (that we handmade) with four chairs, a large book shelf, a rocking chair (that was given to us from my grandparents), tools, miscelaneous storage items like shelving units, and some boxes of clothes, decor, books, etc. That was it. We fit everything into a 16 foot moving truck and drove to Colorado.

Try to eat meals standing (when it makes sense – not at restaurants!) – Sherry hates this one the most
*Our children are still able to use our furniture as they normally would
Well report back next week to let you know how it turned out!
