All the Guts, None of the Glory: The Story of Alexis St. Martin

In the summer of 1822, a twenty year old French Canadian man named Alexis St. Martin was working in the fur trade for the American Fur Company. As a voyageur, part of St. Martin's job was to take part in the transport of furs and on June 6th 1822 he found himself at a trading post located on Mackinac Island. During his time at the post tragedy struck when another voyageur accidentally fired his musket sending a shot into the side of St. Martin and literally tearing a hole into him. Doctor William Beaumont, a US Army surgeon stationed at a nearby army post, was summoned to help St. Martin but the prognosis was grim. Even though he was a healthy man, a wound of that size and nature was usually a death sentence. He may have wished that it was.

When Doctor Beaumont arrived at Machinac Island he was presented with a grim situation. St. Martin's side was ripped open with a wound so devastating that ribs were broken and a lung was partially hanging out of his body. Surviving the night would have been miraculous but despite the expected outcome Dr. Beaumont went forward with performing surgery. One night turned into months and after enduring not one, but many surgeries, all without anesthesia or antiseptic, St. Martin was still alive. Skill and time had indeed healed his wounds with one horrific exception. When the accidental bullet tore through Alexis St. Martin it took a piece of his stomach with it leaving a gaping hole in the organ that prevented him from eating for seventeen days because the food would literally fall out of his body. He would heal, but in a most unfortunate way. Over time the edges around the opening of the stomach wound attached itself to the edges around the opening of the original wound in his side. The result of this unfavorable mending was that St. Martin was now left with a permanent hole in his side that provided a fleshy window that peered directly into his functional stomach.

Alive but permanently mutilated, St. Martin was unable to return to his job with the American Fur Company and not being a resident of Mackinac Island gave many the opinion he should be sent to Quebec to find some sort of aid. However, Dr. Beaumont believed that St. Martin would never survive the journey and instead he offered him employment working for him as a laborer. The opportunity was a lucky one for St. Martin but the the motive of Dr. Beaumont was not one entirely founded in charity. He was very much aware that the man he saved was not only a miracle of survival, but also a modern day marvel the offered an unprecedented chance to observe the functions of the human body firsthand. If St. Martin could read the contract he signed for Dr. Beaumont he would see the words " submit to...such Physiological or Medical experiments as the said William shall direct or cause to be made on or in the stomach of him, the said Alexis...and will obey...the exhibiting and showing of his said Stomach.” He was agreeing to work, but he was also submitting to be a living medical experiment for the man who saved his life.

Doctor William Beaumont

With St. Martin under contract Dr. Beaumont had access to the functions of the human digestive system unlike anyone had ever had before. One of his regular experiments involved tied pieces of food to silk string, lowering them into the hole, and pulling the bits out in intervals to track the process of digestion in real time. He meticulously tracked anything and everything that entered St. Martin's stomach and recorded everything that happened to both the different substances and to his patient. Samples of stomach acid were taken and sent to chemists to be analyzed while Beaumont conducted his own experiments on the liquids, processes that were unheard of in that day and age. Every finding was stunning to the field of physiology where doctors had believed the physical walls of the stomach ground food up before it was proven by Beaumont that it was in fact the stomach acid that broke down what was ingested. The presence and function of this acid in the stomach may have become a particular interest of Beaumont. Allegedly during one of his experiments he actually licked the interior of St. Martin's stomach discovering that the acidity was only present when the stomach was actively digesting food. He also made observations that it was St. Martin's own stomach acid that was sanitizing the hole and keeping him from massive infection. But, on the occasions that St. Martin did fall ill Beaumont noticed that processes slowed down connecting the first links between disease and human digestion. As St. Martin lay serving as a human medical experiment Dr. Beaumont collected praise and accolades with his findings being widely published in volumes such as 1838's Experiments and Observations on the Gastric Juice, and the Physiology of Digestion and him eventually earning the name "Father of Gastric Physiology.”

By the year 1825 St.Martin had healed enough to handle travel and when Dr. Beaumont moved to Fort Niagara in New York, St. Martin accompanied him. The relocation was not permanent though and St. Martin returned to Canada where he attempted to regain a somewhat normal life aided by a rubber plug that could be used to close off the hole into his stomach and prevent anything from going in or out. While back home he met a woman named Marie who he married and the pair had six children together. Although St. Martin had returned to Canada and Beaumont continued to move all over the United States, their connection remained somewhat intact with the men meeting with each other intermittently to continue experiments before their meetings stopped and the bizarre relationship finally ended (some reports say Beaumont believed St. Martin was asking for too much money and he simply cut ties with him).

In 1853 Dr. William Beaumont died after slipping on ice and suffering a head injury. In an outcome no one could have predicted on that fateful June day in 1822, Alexis St. Martin outlived his doctor by twenty-seven years finally passing away in 1880. To discourage curiosity seekers or medical professionals looking to continuing experimenting on him after death, St. Martin's family intentionally left his body out in the elements to decompose before later burying him. The location of his burial at the Saint Thomas Parish Cemetery in Joliette, Quebec, Canada.was not revealed until 1962.

While the field of medicine is built on experiments and observations, the case of Alexis St. Martin was exceptional by all standards and gave the medical field of the 1820s first insight into the real time processes of the human digestive system. Although primitive, and considered unethical by some, these experiments carved a pathway for gastric physiology that may have been undiscovered for generations had it not been for a workplace freak accident and a medical miracle that no one expected to survive the night.

Living experience in an independent floor

Buying a home is one of the biggest decisions a family makes together. This also has far reaching social and economic impact on family members. The locality, the neighbors, infrastructure and what kind of home one buys, go on to define the kind of life one would live.

There are many choices for a buyer. One can buy an apartment in a condominium or buy a villa on an independent plot of land. For some, Skyscrapers make their inhabitants proud and inspire awe in them. But some just don’t like living in tall buildings with shared spaces. A few others want to live in an Independent villa, but can’t afford it. The high prices of land have made villas virtually out of reach of an average Indian. The independent floors give a certain middle course that is affordable and meets aspirations of a style-living oriented middle class family.

An independent-floor apartment is a residential unit with a few other flats in a low-rise independent building. The number of units on each floor is one or two and therefore don’t have to share the common space with many families. These buildings are generally mid – height, offering the much needed visual relief, ensuring these are not claustrophobic. These are also designed with ample space between different blocks to afford a healthy flow of air and ingress of sunlight. These have become important criteria for customers in post-pandemic world.

Buying an independent floor is clearly a lifestyle decision. This is so because, an apartment of the same size in a high-rise will be available at 15-20% less cost. For a lot of people who go by utility of their purchase decision, this premium over a similar sized apartment doesn’t make any sense, but for few, it is the best decision they made. Also the flexibility of space utilisation in independent floor is more as there are very limited common areas. This also allows a buyer to give the space outside one’s home a character that he wants.

However, builder floors have some drawbacks, if they are offered on a standalone basis. Such independent floors do not have facilities such as gymnasium, swimming pool, security and power back-up, that all of the modern society apartments have. But if there are independent floors on offer within a township, this is like one gets best of both worlds. An independent floor with the sense of safety and security and the amenities offered by a large well planned township is unparalleled in its value offer to the buyer.

Independent floors offer a sense of space which can’t be compared with an apartment. The privacy that this offers, also attracts buyers. The discerning customers also like the opportunity to create the greens around their home and less cacophonous surroundings. Another strong value that an independent floor in a township offers is the “step in – step out” convenience. What it means is that you could enjoy social life just by stepping out of your home and be absolutely private the moment you step back inside.
