I'm sorry gay people in my phone but the new Doctor Who has thoroughly fucking confused me and was kind of a letdown

I thought they were gonna genuinely do something with the story and aliens being extremely generic? Like. The Doctor regenerates back into their 10th form, coincidentally near Donna Noble, coincidentally while a plot's going on that feels like a self parody of Dr Who as a show. Tiny overly cutesy alien, gets found by and connects with teen who hides it from family, getting hunted down by big scary alien army, scenes like the plushie hiding thing that feel pulled straight out of a generic 80s scifi family film??

The Meep being evil was obviously gonna happen but I assumed there would be a second twist to it? Like, maybe they were both an elaborate set up bc some larger entity wanted 10 and Donna together. I thought bc it was the anniversary they were going the meta approach by making a threat that basically encapsulates the exact set up you imagine when you think about the show, mashing all the tropes together into one adventure made especially to encourage Donna and 10 back into the old days. Even the end with an oops silly mistake resulting in them being stuck together in the Tardis.

BUT THEN. THEY PLAYED IT COMPLETELY STRAIGHT?? AND THE EPISODE JUST ENDS?? NOT EVEN ANY CHARACTER ACKNOWLEDGING HOW WEIRD THIS WHOLE SITUATION WAS???? JUST COMPLETELY ACTING NORMAL. EVEN THE DOCTOR

I'm seriously hoping that this is explained later on as a setup for somethig larger, and that in later rewatches it'll be way more satisfying. But rn I'm confused as hell and disappointed, and if the show wasn't so important to my childhood I proly wouldn't wanna watch further. If it is all setup then... I don't want an exclusively setup episode. That's lame. At the very least if you ARE going that direction foreshadow it better

Some minor things I'm nitpicking also

- I know Doctor Who isn't meant to be that serious but come on the intro of David Tennant just greenscreened standing in space explaining the setup was so goofy it made me howl (and I don't think that was intentional)

- I love an important trans character, that's based as hell, but the trying to act relevant and appeal to Gen Z was kind of annoying. Not as in "Grrr my old show is woke 😡" I'm literally one of the wokes. As in "Haha women are so much cooler and smarter than men 😏 Doctor assuming pronouns 😳 Binary Nonbinary 😁😁" "🦡 Wow that's not very funny and a little irritating, it feels like a cistraight guy wrote this". It was a funny episode and some bits of this were funny but certainly not others

- For real tho I'm obsessed w "Binary Nonbinary" that's so fucking stupid

- For all the set up and stakes put on Donna remembering the Doctor, the way it resolved felt like a copout. Passing down and sharing the power was fine but literally just going "Nuh uh" and sending it away?? I really feel like that diminishes how importantly the time lord power was set up just for the sake of Donna being alive for more episodes. If they need her they could've at least let the two deal with it together for a while, before finding a better way to get rid of it down the line

- ^ It also made Donna's death have less impact for the problem to be solved in such an easy way. Her dying was emotional, was well executed, until it wasn't and she was fine and she was back having fun doctor times and woo!! everything to do with her absorbing that power and losing her memory is done and dusted and doesn't need further exploring 😁😁👍👍 I mean come on man..... give us something............

Waiting forever for the same people pressed about the term "theyfab" to bring the same energy for the shitty little TERFy dogwhistles like "male socialisation" that get used to openly misgender transfems in progressive spaces.

Hiya tumblr! Let's have a talk about bioessentialist enbyphobia, transmisogyny, and how to make sure transfeminine people, enby or not, feel completely unsafe and unwelcome at your events. First take a look at this group description, and then lets get into it.

First some context. Those of you who know me know about the kinds of clubs I go to. This screenshot was taken from a local event page, and I've blocked out their name because in the months since this event was hosted the group has updated their description to be more inclusive.

Seeing that description, I avoided going to events hosted by that group.

"But Kat, why? You're a woman and it says women are allowed!"

It also implicitly lumps all nonbinary people who were assigned male at birth with men and calls them males.

So why is this a problem for me? Well, if this group sees all AMAB nonbinary people as "male" then it says a lot of things about the ways the see trans women.

Many, and I would venture to assume most, trans women know well the feeling of our womanhood treated as conditional, subject to immediate revocation without warning.

Spaces that are "Women and AFAB exclusive" are often rife with this, and often lead to a lot of really gross and abusive power dynamics where transfems get treated as second class to anyone who was assigned female at birth.

(Side note: Gretchen Felker-Martin did, I believe, a masterful job of portraying this sort of dynamic in her book Manhunt)

If you are a trans woman in one of these spaces, you quickly learn that you are on the thinnest of ice.

Laugh a little too loud? You're male.

Sit or stand a little too close? You're threatening.

Smile at the wrong person? You're making other people uncomfortable.

Transfems, in these spaces, quickly learn that standing up for ourselves in the face of flagrant abuse is verboten, and will be met with swift and decisive punishment and exile.

I personally don't like the word "theyfab" and don't use it. I'm writing this thread to hopefully help people better understand the social dynamics that were being addressed when that term was coined.

It was coined because transfems are forced to navigate a community of things like "afab only" apartment rentals.

It was coined because transfems constantly have to listen to other trans people implicitly describe us as disgusting, hideous freaks.

In short and in closing: consider that the reason why the term "theyfab" exists and "theymab" really doesn't probably lies somewhere in the fact that the sort of person who would call someone a "theymab" doesn't need to, because they *already* just call AMAB trans people "male".

A BROTP I have with said character: her and kokichi are great, and not just because they're funny! it's fascinating to think of how long they were cooperating behind the scenes. sometimes i get really mad at miu because kokichi (presumably under the cover of the first electrobomb) TOLD her his plan, he tried so hard to work together, and she rejected him, tried to beat him to death, and sent everything spiraling off the rails for the rest of the game!! but then i have to reel myself back in and remember that she was just as paranoid as kokichi, that she didn't go with the plan because she was terrified "someone" (probably kokichi imo) would betray and kill her, and Not Everyone Mean To Your Blorbo Has To Explode, Mem. miu tried her best. it just wasn't enough. that can be said for 99% of the v3 kids.

A NOTP I have with said character: YOU GOT ME TO RANT ABOUT IRUMATSU LAST TIME YOU'RE NOT GETTING IT AGAIN. i will say i dislike sairuma though, but mostly because i think shuichi hating her ass is the funniest way for that relationship to go.

A random headcanon: i know it gets lost in the whole "haha funny she thinks she's a cyborg, aren't tsumugi's backstories so fucking stupid" thing, but i think she *did* get a traumatic brain injury in that car accident that eroded her impulse control and sense of boundaries and that's a large part of why she behaves the way she does. does that count as a headcanon or is that just extrapolating from canon. hm.

General Opinion over said character: every day i think about kodaka designing her to be a deliberately unlikable character who everyone would hate, and then getting super shocked and mad at the popularity polls showing she's rlly popular. GET FUCKED NERD

Sexuality Headcanon: either aro or gay. headcanoning him as not attracted to women is the only way i can get any enjoyment out of the clusterfuck that is the harumota plotline, because at least it makes the scene where maki confesses and he says "...good for you, off to die now!" extremely funny.

Gender Headcanon: a bro. a broski. a brotato chip. a brotein shake. a brofessor. a member of the broman empire.

A ship I have with said character: i've grown fond of oumota if only bc those fics tend to have really good kokichi characterization. him n gonta are the embodiment of the "i lied, i don't actually like sex, now put your pants back on and let me infodump for three hours" meme and i love that for them. but most of all i like the idea of him and rantaro in a qpr postgame. i think those two would get a lot from just...existing quietly in each other's space, slowing becoming the center of the other's life. i should write a fic about that...

A BROTP I have with said character: him and shuichi are sooo unhealthy and that's what makes them so interesting to me. i think about them postgame a lot...about shuichi trying to support kaito the way he was supported, and about kaito fighting against it. it's hard not to slip into old patterns, but i think they could do it.

also i think about "i don't care if you're sick! i don't care if you're dying! i won't let monokuma touch you!" EVERY GODDAMN DAY

 A NOTP I have with said character: him and maki. i can’t even rant about them like i do with my other NOTPs. they just make me...tired.

A random headcanon: he never gels his hair again after the game. i’ve said it before but i really think he should’ve been more messed up when he came out of the exisal - no gel, no coat (where did he even get the second one??), covered in blood, etc. and i think after that, when he wakes up, he can’t bring himself to gel it again. he buys the supplies and goes into his bathroom and just Stares into the mirror. he can’t make himself do it. he leaves.

General Opinion over said character: ehhh...mixed. he’s a very good and complex character but he’s also a raging homophobe in the og japanese, yknow? it’s difficult for me to have super positive feelings on a character who calls people homophobic slurs and is treated as right for doing so by the narrative, no matter how deep and complex they are and how many cute gay headcanons i have. maybe that’s more of a flaw with v3 than a flaw with kaito, though.

General Opinion over said character: i love her so mucjh,,,,she was the most relatable character in v3 to me. her relating everything that happens to her through the lens of her childish interests punched me right in the gut :’). her *choosing* to combat her natural fatigue and depression in order to live a better life because she won’t get another chance was so moving. wish she had a better outfit tho.

While thousands of trans people protested against their removal from the law that would ban conversion therapy in the UK, everyone’s favorite children’s bigot had a little tea time with a “lesbian separatist” group whose slogan is “Lesbian Not Queer” because they believe that all lesbians should separate themselves from the rest of the community explicitly because of their transphobic views which include saying that all trans women rape the body of women simply by existing because they believe trans existence is an invasion of all womanhood or some nonsense. I don’t know, they made this bullshit up, not me, I can’t explain it.

Obviously this is horrifying on a lot of levels and greatly disrespects the actual experiences of survivors of assault but I guess disrespecting the reality of other women is what these gals are all about. They also define the body of a lesbian as the “ultimate woman-only space” which sure is a weird way to talk about another human person!

As a lesbian, I don’t think of my own body and autonomy as just a space designed for other women over which I have no control and that any choice I make that might not align with their own ideas is somehow me being coerced and tricked. I actually think I’m a big girl with my own head but I guess Rowling and her tea time chums might disagree since they’re the ones who created a poll specifically to suggest that all trans women are predators trying to trick lesbians into sleeping with them. The same poll was the foundation of a BBC article that actually quoted a confessed rapist as one of their lesbian sources until they retroactively had to edit it to not include an abuser to try to make their bigoted argument.

Anyway while Rowling joked about how her new besties said she’s “only 66% straight” (“watch this space for further developments” tee hee get it queer female attraction is something we can joke about because it’s mostly performance and not really real) and accepted praise and adoration for apparently speaking on behalf of all lesbians with her bigotry, Warner Bros is cutting the really impressive and totally validating gay rep from the tenth Harry Potter film in order to make money in China. 

It was easy though because it apparently only equaled six seconds of screen time.

Good thing she actually cares about the gays, huh, otherwise I might think all this grandstanding, obsessive fixation, and meeting up with hate groups is something she does for an ego boost or to redirect attention back her way when people are talking about literally anything else going on in the world.

When I said that cis lesbians and bisexuals need to get our collective heads out of our asses, these were the people who are being publicly praised as speaking on our behalf that I was talking about. Rowling was repeatedly applauded by people who say she speaks for all lesbians. Many times when confronted for her bigotry or told to actually speak to LGBTQ people, she always says she is speaking for the lesbians she knows. She uses us, our identities, to validate her disgusting hate.

Know that these are the people speaking over you, and some of them aren’t even fucking gay. (But tee hee, they’re only partially straight too, haha, female attraction is a funny fun joke and not to be treated seriously at all because girls are so silly and couldn’t possibly know what they even want without being told.) Get fucking angry and then do something about it.

Guys, In my opinion, It's not gonna happen. I wish it would! I wish this shit would stop happening. But the showrunner spelled it out in that March interview, said the fans were reading things into it that they didn't intend and weren't there. The marketing dept has continued to walk the fence on it because let's face it, Buddie brings in ratings. The hashtag trends every episode, fans break down every scene and moment... But if it was going to happen? It would have already and they would be promoting the crap out of it.

They keep pairing the characters with women, they have had a few seasons now to veer away from that. If they planned to pivot that way it would definitely have been foreshadowed more effectively than it has been and so far most of the allusions to Buddie as a couple are easily explained away as jokes. If you want to know what the blueprint for this relationship is going to be? I imagine it playing out like McDanno from Hawaii Five-O. Brothers in arms, working side by side, bestest buds haha it almost like they're married haha isn't gayness funny?

To go down an even more cynical route, I don't think canon Buddie will happen because...they already created a spin off to tick all the niche representation boxes.

911 became one of the most watched shows on TV when it aired. It has mainstream appeal and is marketed to mainstream audiences which (from a networks understanding) means mainly straight white characters. You can have some non-lead POC characters that don't "flout" their culture or ethnicity and of course some lesbian women, who have become more mainstream and are seen as more acceptable to the average viewer than other LGBTQ+ characters. Many mainstream shows have lesbian characters because they don't seem to pose a threat to standard patriarchical ideals. Mainstream viewers watch Ellen, they'll watch this. Then they'll go and vote Republican in the midterms with a clean conscience.

911 Lonestar however, covers Black, Muslim, Trans and Gay demographics, has peripheral storylines and found family tropes that play into these "niche" markets and caters to them specifically. To base it in a traditionally Red State also appeals to the need to be seen as groundbreaking and progressive, and showing people represented in spaces we have been historically told we don't belong will always draw attention.

But as ever, networks and media outlets are behind the 8-ball when it comes to knowing what an audience wants and what viewers are ready for. I cannot imagine how furious network executives are that fans are trying to "gayify" their ratings juggernaut instead of doing as they expected and just sticking to watching the "other show" that was made for them so that we can still buy the products they sell us in the ad breaks. Because make no mistake, they do not discriminate when it comes to who's money they want.

I make this sound all very cynical and mean spirited but maybe it was a case of "yay, 911 is a success, go make a spinoff" and the producers were like, let's do a great thing and get more representation. People are rarely intentionally malicious.

But the effect is the same.

Buddie probably won't happen because the network fears alienating the massive mainstream audience and they are willing to risk pissing off the devoted online fanbase who are very vocal, but they still believe are in the minority.

I say all this not to dash hopes, but to temper expectations. I am a fandom and shipping senior citizen, I am afraid I have seen this film before. And I didn't like the ending.

If you love the show, then great, continue to enjoy it. But if you are watching expecting Buck and Eddie will finally get together? You may end up angry, bitter and disappointed.

ahhhhhhhh thank you for this ask lol sorry it took a few days i was deep in elaine translation work haha. but! lancelot time!!! i think hes such an interesting and like non typical character in his strengths and weaknesses and actions. as well as the fact that hes really easily read as like gay and trans and mentally ill.

like. he is very much not the stereotypical hero in a lot of ways-- vulgate lancelot especially is PAINFULLY shy like, its hard to read in places the difficulty he has talking to people and his hatred of being like, seen and percieved. hes constantly hiding and running away, wearing disguises and changing his name. his modesty isnt false, he genuinly does not value himself very highly, as you can see more painfully in his relationships, especially with galehaut and guinevere. he honestly does not believe himself worthy or deserving or love and good things, and is generally horribly self flagellating in a way edges towards the literal.

i think this is very interesting and sympathetic. he comes off as very human-- yes, he is generally the best knight in th world and is praised for it, and he knows this. there are places in le morte where he warns people about fighting him because he knows he can beat them. but it doesnt come across as arrogance or braggadosio, its merely a staement of fact.

hes very contradictory like that-- hes generally quite gentle and kind, rey has a post compiling these but you need only look to the elaine bit i translated to see how genuinly kind he is. he can seem almost fragile, in many ways an emotional timebomb, often crying and even snapping and having a complete breakdown. but at the same time he is shockingly accepting of violence, against him and committed by him. his treatment of the proud knight in kotc is chilling, his murder of the consirators and the death toll of the rescue of guinevere generally reveal a very morbid comfort with death, blood and violence. he loves tournaments, which revolve around the opportunity to be violent inan acceptable space. its fascinating.

also and i could go into this but i wont, hes very easily read as trans coded and is in a lot of ways, especially in le morte and the vulgate, is not at all the epitome of traditional masculinity that he is in bad modern adaptations. hes mistaken for a woman twice in the morte, grows up on an island meant only for women and girls, the vulgate specifically says he has huge tits, he generally has a very odd relationship with identity, his body and the perception of it, and sex. god i could go on but i shant in this but. hes trans.

also hes just very funny. like hes such a wierd dork its fun to read about him because he doesnt quite think or act in predictable ways. he like sleeps in the woods and gets kidnapped and does apainting in morgan le feys basement. he beats up a guy for wearing a mantle. he takes his shoes off to cross a knife bridge. hes a wierd funny man and im obsessed with him.

As a butch how do you deal with misgendering situations? Especially over-the-top ones like "Excuse me ma'am... Um, sir... God! I'm sorry I don't know!" (actually happened to me yesterday)

Haha! Every. Damn. Day for me. I usually am way less bothered by it that the person making the mistake. I understand they are using visual clues taught to them by our culture to recognize gender. For women it can be a matter of safety. We need to know who is in our space. It can be dangerous for a man with the wrong intentions to be within our boundaries. For men, they are taught to interact differently with men and women so they need to know then gender of the person in order to know which behavior to display.. this can be good or bad.

Friday at the LGBT Youth Center opening i ran into Virginia. She is a 70 year old trans woman with whom I have worked on a few things over the years. She was the first sex change (her words.. not mine to I am sticking to what she uses) candidate in Iowa.  At 6′8 she is a commanding precense with a pretty deep voice and loud because she lost a lot of her hearing from factory work. She had not seen me since I dropped the last 50 lbs and grew out my hair. She tapped my arm and said “Hey.. I thought you were a guy.. I have been sitting here trying to figure out how I knew you..then someone said you were Jen...Hahah  ain’t that something..not a guy, huh?”   I smiled big and said “Nope, not a guy a proud butch lesbian.”  Then we talked about how wonderful the space was.  

No real point to the story..i just thought it was funny. She was not in the least bit embarrassed for misgendering me.. I suppose it stil happens to her all the time even after 40 years. She can’t change height or raise her voice. She can’t stop hair loss or a light beard growth.. she owns it and is who she is.. so.. kind of like me she knows who she is and shit happens, me too. We have bigger fish to fry together and not apart. 

Don’t worry about it unless someone becomes a real bastard about it. I smile big and say.. “ma’am”.  Or just “I am a woman”. or I don’t bother correcting them at all and just go with it. Cause in the grand scheme of my day.. it doesn’t matter.. I know what is under the flannel and in my heart.

January 17, 2019 - sh!t/personal post

Yesterday was, like, the longest day. A drive to the city from where I live SHOULD only be about an hour, but with rush hour traffic (morning or night), it turns into 1 hour and a half or 1 hour and 45 minutes. So the drive to the city was a while, but my co-worker drove us (I paid for parking) and chatted the whole time. Which was funny cuz I like to sleep in cars lol. And then the meeting we had to attend yesterday for our whole team, as predicted, had 99% NOTHING to do with us so it was basically a waste of a day for us 2. We did get a great burger and fries for lunch that the company paid for but my fat ass had to walk 3 blocks in the cold and on my recently fractured ankle, wasn’t the most fun. I also love that everywhere there are “Caution: FALLING ICE” signs??? Of all the dumb things to have to worry about when going to the city, I never even considered that one til yesterday. 

I was so dang tired that when I got home a little before 7pm, I went straight to bed, no dinner or anything. Since I had LITERALLY yawned every 5 minutes during the drive home, I assumed I’d drop RIGHT OFF, but haha. Never. I ended up having to take meds, as I usually do, and I still didn’t get a great night of sleep. 

We had a lot to catch up on this morning but we managed to do so ok and unlike a lot of our recent days, the load of work kept us busy for almost the entire day. I leave in an hour and a half and it’s already slowed back down to a crawl.
