The idea that uni protesters are "elitist ivy-league rich kids larping as revolutionaries" on Twitter and Reddit and even here is so fucking funny to me if you actually know anything about the student bodies at these unis. Take it from someone who's going to one of the biggest private unis in the US, 80% of the peers I know are either from the suburbs or an apartment somewhere in America, children of immigrants, or here on a student visa. I've heard about one-percenter students, but I've never met one in person. Like, don't get me wrong, the institution as a whole is still very privileged and white. I've talked with friends and classmates about feeling weird or dissonant being here and coming from such a different background. But in my art program, I see BIPOC, disabled, queer, lower-income students and faculty trying to deconstruct and tear that down and make space every day. So to take a cursory glance at a crowd of student protesters in coalitions that are led by BIPOC & 1st/2nd-gen immigrant students and HQ'd in ethnic housings and student organizations and say, "ah. children of the elite." Get real.
#also idk how to tell you this but even if it were true. wealthy children potentially sacrificing their educational careers to protest is#a good thing actually. idk how to tell you that caring about people from other nations is good#personal#“this war has nothing to do with most students cuz nobody's getting drafted” idk how to explain to you that we should be angry#that our tuitions of 10s of thousands of dollars that we pay every year for an education is being used to fund a genocidal campaign#also the implication that if you go to a uni institution you are automatically privileged by participation no matter your bg#i didn't /want/ to go to this school. i was supposed to go to a school with an art/animation program. but i realized my immigrant#parents have been working their whole lives to get me here. and turning the opportunity down would be a disservice to their sacrifice#this is getting into convos of “what 2nd gen kids owe their parents” which is different for everyone but. yeah#i just get pissed off at seeing people misrepresenting student bodies as “wealthy” and “privileged” and “elite” when it's such a blatant li#i remember a year ago a friend told me they can't fly home to hong kong for winter break because the plane tickets are too expensive#so they have to find temporary housing around the area#last quarter for a film doc class my film partner made a doc on a small group of marxist grad students from india discussing praxis#during a rally a few months ago in response to police presence the coalition invited palestinian students to speak about their experiences#and lead songs and read poems they wrote. these are STUDENTS. are they elitist too?#this is not to disregard my own personal privilege either.#this whole narrative's just to rationalize a lack of empathy to me. seeing a 19yo student get shot by a rubber bullet and your first#reaction is “HAW! HAW! bet richy rich didn't see THAT coming when she put on her terrorist hood!”#newsflash. these big uni campuses are HAUNTED by the violence of past protests and revolutions and police brutality. we know.#why do you think these coalitions have been making reinforced barricades at record speed

Jason goes back to school AU - Part 2
Bruce: So when did you decide that you were going to go back to school?
Jason: *looking up over his book* It’s been in the cards for a while. Well, ever since I got over the whole trying to kill you and Tim thing. I needed a new hobby. Well, one that doesn’t involve anything to do with our side hustle.
Bruce: *smiling softly* What did you decide to study?
Jason: Bachelor of Arts. I’m focusing on English and Creative Writing, hoping for a double Major but I’m doing a History unit this semester and I’m enjoying that a lot as well.
Bruce: I’m not surprised, they were always the subjects that you enjoyed the most. Are you doing in person classes?
Jason: Nah, no way in hell I’d be able to do that and everything else. Online was always going to be the best option. Plus if I’m out of town I can just take a computer and won’t miss anything.
Bruce: Smart choice.
Jason: It wasn’t meant to be a secret. I was planning on saying something, we’ve just had a busy couple of months. Time found out by accident about a month ago. He borrow my computer to show me an article he had been reading and discovered an essay I was working on. I was hoping to tell everyone all at once.
Bruce: I’m not mad. I’m glad that you’ve gone back.
Jason: You are?
Bruce: Of course. You thrived when you were at school. Often it felt like Robin was a hobby. Dick would have done anything to get out of school to be Robin, you, well you lived to learn. I’m glad you’re back at it.
Jason: I never stopped. I just went down a different path for a while and started learning more deadly things.
Bruce: Your missing years don’t count in the way I’m talking about.
Jason: But I learnt so much!
Bruce: *shakes his head* Anyway I’m glad that you’re doing this again.
Jason: Thanks.
Bruce walks out of the room and then pops back in as he remembers something.
Bruce: By the way, how are you paying for it?
Jason: I got a loan.
Bruce: *very slowly* You got a loan.
Jason: Yeah, well it’s not like I have the money lying around.
Bruce: You have a whole education fund you could have used and you got a loan!
Jason: I have an education fund?
#batman#bruce wayne#batfam#jason todd#redhood#Jason’s goes back to school#seriously Jason you don’t think Bruce set up an entire fund filled with millions so you could study anything your heart desires#you could spend your entire life studying and still have cash left over#he won’t spend money on family therapy but his will on books and stationary and other educational needs you have

Hopping into your inbox about the college tuition thing: the cost is a big reason why academic performance is so stressed in high school. Better grades equals a better chance at getting a scholarship directly from your chosen college/university, which means paying less out of your own pocket. But yeah...this is why the "broken college student" is such a trope in U.S. media. And why burnout in high school students is so prevalent. So fun :) I love it here :)
😭 that sucks omg. college students are broke here too but it's much easier to get your tuition fully paid off by the state. and even if u pay your own tuition it's... comparatively not as insane amount of money as in america. like yeah i fully wouldn't be able to afford it because i'm broke but looking at THOSE numbers it's practically nothing. what the fuckkkk i'm so sorry for you guys
#like you gotta get good grades/enough points to get accepted for state funding#and it's WAY harder for some majors than others obviously#and also you have to sell your soul to them in exchange but that's details#but it's still. easy? like yea i don't know the numbers but i'd wager to say most of the people at my uni are there for free#anyways jesus fucking christ that's an insane amount for practically everyone to be expected to pay#if i lived in the usa i simply would not be getting a college education because i couldn't afford it 👍 what the fuckkkkk

"[...] Edelgard is dead and that she will never get an education, rise above the station of her birth, or become more than a poor laborer getting taxed into oblivion by corrupt nobles [...]" aren't these issues mainly highlighted in Adrestia? With taxes being mentioned in the Hyrm paralogue (unless there are other mentions). And I know Dimitri's supports in Nopes touches on the other topics (with education being stopped by a food problem). So it's not like commoners are screwed if she dies.
TBH, being "taxed to oblivion" isn't seen in the game(s) proper save for Hrym but that's not a good look for Supreme Leader, so let's ignore that. I mean, she is running the country, and apparently doesn't bother telling Uncle to stop taxing to death the people of Hrym in the name of a guy she had in her basement for at least 5 years?
Instead... Leonie iirc complains about taxes, but when Lorenz tells her they were used to pay for Jeralt's services (and they the guy dumped everything in the nearest bottle) she doesn't push the "too much taxes!" angle anymore.
I suppose Supreme Leader's education system would work based on fruits and fresh water, so it wouldn't need money - that comes in the form of tax - to work? Unless we're supposed to understand Supreme Leader's new teachers will work for free because Hubert will kindly ask them to do so, and Doro will print books herself while Caspar will, on his own, build all the furnitures needed to get a school running.
Of course, they will do so freely, because Fodlan Adrestia became an utopia without the evil lizard lady's influence.
As for education in general, IRL (save for several states lol) people are willing to afford time and ressources to go to school or to let their children go to school if they don't have anythign "better" to do, like, idk, working to get enough money to feed said children.
or maybe Supreme Leader's Adrestia will have some sort of social minimal aid system - that isn't funded through taxes because taxes BaD - so Adrestians can send their children to school without being afraid of not being able to eat next morning thanks to that financial support?
But let's not talk too much about "semantics" and the intricacies of this totally canon version of what is going to happen after Tru Piss/when Supreme Leader kicks the bucket in non Tru Piss routes -
Anon, did you know feudalism BaD?
#anon#replies#fandom woes#this is the most tiresome thing about those debunks#the goalpost moves so often that you'd think it needs to piss#You want to talk about taxes? Then let's do it based on canon maybe IRL historical examples and what not#Education? Ditto even if it implies realising that Garreg Mach isn't a traditionnal school or even high school it's a military school#that is supposed to teach people how to fight war and lead#not to teach 5 years old how to read or count to 10#if you want a school you need funding and if it's state funding it means taxes#if devoted fans want to talk about boring rl things like taxes education and what not then i know the topic is boring#but you can't end up with 'and everything is suddenly fine bcs i said so and talking about technicalities is boring even if i started it'#i remember an old politician once said something like morality don't fill your bellies or something like this#which was kind of stupid in the context he said it but it still has a modicum of sense#it doesn't matter if you have a master degree or two if you are effing starving

It's insane to me that this entire "debate" (if it can even be called that) is literally just
trans people, jewish people, black people literally everyone who has been hurt by bigotry: hey please don't spend $70 on a game about pro-slavery and fascism when a lot of that money will go to its creator who is publically bigoted and uses her massive amounts of wealth to fund the eradication of marginalized groups
and the response to that was: fuck you why can't you just let people enjoy things, harry potter personally saved my life
like. it's extremely telling that so many people value their own entertainment and nostalgia over the lives of others. jkr is such a horrible, despicable person and literally all people are saying is that yeah you shouldn't be giving a modern day nazi that much money when they constantly bring people to the alt right and donate that money to every anti-human rights organization you could think of.
and no i don't think sending people death threats is okay but at the same time, you don't get to act surprised, defensive, or victimized when people call you out for giving money to a fucking nazi.
#its so upsetting seeing all of this#people have put in so much work and energy trying to educate people about her#but it feels like we take fifty steps backwards whenever a new hp thing comes out#is it really that hard to NOT spend money on the fucking nazi game???#no!! it isn't!! no one is forcing you to give her money!!#people are literally detailing exactly why its bad to buy this game and every response is literally just fuck you let me do whatever i want#she literally donates to orgs that actively spread hatred and bigotry and resort to people killing themselves...#and youre surprised when trans and jewish people say they dont trust you?#when you care about yourself and your enjoyment of a piece of media over their lives?#you don't get to act surprised when people call you transphobic or antisemitic when you willingly give a transphobic nazi money#just cause you want to play the silly wizard game#and yeah sorry if it 'hurts' but no you can't be an ally while also buying this game#thats not how that fucking works#not to mention it literally fucking Astounds me when i see poc and queer people support this game..#she doesn't like you!! she wishes you were dead too!!#hogwarts legacy#like i genuinely dont care if you like hp but knowingly funding her hatred is not okay and i don't understand why people think it is

I have no ties whatsoever to South Africa but watching the lawyers (also featuring an Irish woman bc the Irish understand too due to their history) makes me tear up and be so proud and the fact videos are being shared that went viral, also of soldiers exposing themselves while committing atrocities, this is in part the work of all of us (re)posting, sharing, spreading! Don’t tell me sharing posts does nothing! I know it seemed so defeating at times when the follower count and the story views dropped RAPIDLY but every single voice did matter in the end when they all came together ✊ South Africa’s legal team did amazing work
#also if you’re like me living in a country that ENDORSES AND FUNDS isra*l g€n0cide I feel there’s even more of a duty to some kind of action#and theres so many ways to get involved#posting liking commenting sharing helps stuff go viral#also people clicking on your story will have SEEN IT and once you did staying silent makes you complicit#youre not supposed to be comfortable during a g€n0cide#also just talk about it and educate others in real life#sign petitions and if you can call representatives#donate if you have the financial possibility#there’s a way for everybody#and b0ycott companies that are complicit and fund or even produce on occupied territory

Mini rant but please tell me why I have just seen someone legitimately say it doesn’t matter if university students use ai to write their essays
#like….#yes academia is a shit show but come ON#when arts and humanities departments are being closed at institutions all over the country perhaps lets not encourage people to view these#courses as any more expendable and disposable than they already are#and what does ai-generated essays do but undermine the whole fucking point of it all?#like there is a reason i am staying well clear of higher education academia now i have my doctorate#and a reason why so many lecturers are abandoning it altogether#it is a hellscape atm and saying its alright for students to use ai on their assignments??? not helping#you might think you're sticking it to the big guys that run universities these days when you use chatgpt for an essay#but when youre found out - and you will be - thats taken as a strike against the department and since funding is dependent on student grade#all you're really doing is directly contributing to the funding cuts that are making uk higher education a fucking dismal place#soon enough a university education will once again be the reserve of the wealthy and it is this exact attitude that will make it possible#and as a first-gen working class student that managed to make it all the way to phd level through sheer fucking hard work...#this is the most depressing and infuriating take ive seen for a long time

Enemies to lovers to enemies to lovers except it’s me and academia
#auguste speaks#auguste vents#listen academia is great in many ways#but I hate that it has become harder and harder for young people to become academics#you barely get any funding (especially in humanities bc it’s often considered unimportant’’)#you have to pass through countless of revisions just to get your project approved#and you’re not even guaranteed to pursue your education or get a job after you graduate#the market is so competitive some universities have become renowned for being toxic and insufferable#the pressure to publish is incredibly high (publish or perish they say)#i would never dream of quitting but goddamn is it discouraging at times

I think that some of the frustration that people express is that poor teaching is not unique to the US. The US history curriculum is actually far better than what it was like in my home country. I studied in an American high school for a month and was introduced to a lot of stuff I'd never been taught about ever. Having one world history class was more than I ever had. Most people's history education ends at about World War Two. So I think it can be frustrating to see people blame the education system solely for this global ignorance because that argument rests on the idea that America is uniquely bad, uniquely propagandistic, etc. There is something to be said that the US has a uniquely insular culture because of its international cultural dominance. It doesn't have to look outside of itself because it's always the most important country in the room. I don't know.
But I also think that turning ignorance into a moral failing is an unhelpful and sometimes cruel thing.
#I have complicated feelings about all of this#because it is very frustrating having to explain that yes we do have microwaves actually#and the refrain that the US' education is uniquely awful does frustrate me because (at least in theory) it is far more expansive than most#but that fact must be mitigated by the quality of the school which is tied to funding which#It's complicated basically#The reason non-Americans get so vicious over this issue is (I believe) due to having to exist within American hegemony when online#And it is exhausting to constantly be experiencing your country/culture from an outsider's perspective
