The idea that uni protesters are "elitist ivy-league rich kids larping as revolutionaries" on Twitter and Reddit and even here is so fucking funny to me if you actually know anything about the student bodies at these unis. Take it from someone who's going to one of the biggest private unis in the US, 80% of the peers I know are either from the suburbs or an apartment somewhere in America, children of immigrants, or here on a student visa. I've heard about one-percenter students, but I've never met one in person. Like, don't get me wrong, the institution as a whole is still very privileged and white. I've talked with friends and classmates about feeling weird or dissonant being here and coming from such a different background. But in my art program, I see BIPOC, disabled, queer, lower-income students and faculty trying to deconstruct and tear that down and make space every day. So to take a cursory glance at a crowd of student protesters in coalitions that are led by BIPOC & 1st/2nd-gen immigrant students and HQ'd in ethnic housings and student organizations and say, "ah. children of the elite." Get real.
#also idk how to tell you this but even if it were true. wealthy children potentially sacrificing their educational careers to protest is#a good thing actually. idk how to tell you that caring about people from other nations is good#personal#“this war has nothing to do with most students cuz nobody's getting drafted” idk how to explain to you that we should be angry#that our tuitions of 10s of thousands of dollars that we pay every year for an education is being used to fund a genocidal campaign#also the implication that if you go to a uni institution you are automatically privileged by participation no matter your bg#i didn't /want/ to go to this school. i was supposed to go to a school with an art/animation program. but i realized my immigrant#parents have been working their whole lives to get me here. and turning the opportunity down would be a disservice to their sacrifice#this is getting into convos of “what 2nd gen kids owe their parents” which is different for everyone but. yeah#i just get pissed off at seeing people misrepresenting student bodies as “wealthy” and “privileged” and “elite” when it's such a blatant li#i remember a year ago a friend told me they can't fly home to hong kong for winter break because the plane tickets are too expensive#so they have to find temporary housing around the area#last quarter for a film doc class my film partner made a doc on a small group of marxist grad students from india discussing praxis#during a rally a few months ago in response to police presence the coalition invited palestinian students to speak about their experiences#and lead songs and read poems they wrote. these are STUDENTS. are they elitist too?#this is not to disregard my own personal privilege either.#this whole narrative's just to rationalize a lack of empathy to me. seeing a 19yo student get shot by a rubber bullet and your first#reaction is “HAW! HAW! bet richy rich didn't see THAT coming when she put on her terrorist hood!”#newsflash. these big uni campuses are HAUNTED by the violence of past protests and revolutions and police brutality. we know.#why do you think these coalitions have been making reinforced barricades at record speed

Jason goes back to school AU - Part 2
Bruce: So when did you decide that you were going to go back to school?
Jason: *looking up over his book* It’s been in the cards for a while. Well, ever since I got over the whole trying to kill you and Tim thing. I needed a new hobby. Well, one that doesn’t involve anything to do with our side hustle.
Bruce: *smiling softly* What did you decide to study?
Jason: Bachelor of Arts. I’m focusing on English and Creative Writing, hoping for a double Major but I’m doing a History unit this semester and I’m enjoying that a lot as well.
Bruce: I’m not surprised, they were always the subjects that you enjoyed the most. Are you doing in person classes?
Jason: Nah, no way in hell I’d be able to do that and everything else. Online was always going to be the best option. Plus if I’m out of town I can just take a computer and won’t miss anything.
Bruce: Smart choice.
Jason: It wasn’t meant to be a secret. I was planning on saying something, we’ve just had a busy couple of months. Time found out by accident about a month ago. He borrow my computer to show me an article he had been reading and discovered an essay I was working on. I was hoping to tell everyone all at once.
Bruce: I’m not mad. I’m glad that you’ve gone back.
Jason: You are?
Bruce: Of course. You thrived when you were at school. Often it felt like Robin was a hobby. Dick would have done anything to get out of school to be Robin, you, well you lived to learn. I’m glad you’re back at it.
Jason: I never stopped. I just went down a different path for a while and started learning more deadly things.
Bruce: Your missing years don’t count in the way I’m talking about.
Jason: But I learnt so much!
Bruce: *shakes his head* Anyway I’m glad that you’re doing this again.
Jason: Thanks.
Bruce walks out of the room and then pops back in as he remembers something.
Bruce: By the way, how are you paying for it?
Jason: I got a loan.
Bruce: *very slowly* You got a loan.
Jason: Yeah, well it’s not like I have the money lying around.
Bruce: You have a whole education fund you could have used and you got a loan!
Jason: I have an education fund?

Hopping into your inbox about the college tuition thing: the cost is a big reason why academic performance is so stressed in high school. Better grades equals a better chance at getting a scholarship directly from your chosen college/university, which means paying less out of your own pocket. But yeah...this is why the "broken college student" is such a trope in U.S. media. And why burnout in high school students is so prevalent. So fun :) I love it here :)
😭 that sucks omg. college students are broke here too but it's much easier to get your tuition fully paid off by the state. and even if u pay your own tuition it's... comparatively not as insane amount of money as in america. like yeah i fully wouldn't be able to afford it because i'm broke but looking at THOSE numbers it's practically nothing. what the fuckkkk i'm so sorry for you guys

"[...] Edelgard is dead and that she will never get an education, rise above the station of her birth, or become more than a poor laborer getting taxed into oblivion by corrupt nobles [...]" aren't these issues mainly highlighted in Adrestia? With taxes being mentioned in the Hyrm paralogue (unless there are other mentions). And I know Dimitri's supports in Nopes touches on the other topics (with education being stopped by a food problem). So it's not like commoners are screwed if she dies.
TBH, being "taxed to oblivion" isn't seen in the game(s) proper save for Hrym but that's not a good look for Supreme Leader, so let's ignore that. I mean, she is running the country, and apparently doesn't bother telling Uncle to stop taxing to death the people of Hrym in the name of a guy she had in her basement for at least 5 years?
Instead... Leonie iirc complains about taxes, but when Lorenz tells her they were used to pay for Jeralt's services (and they the guy dumped everything in the nearest bottle) she doesn't push the "too much taxes!" angle anymore.
I suppose Supreme Leader's education system would work based on fruits and fresh water, so it wouldn't need money - that comes in the form of tax - to work? Unless we're supposed to understand Supreme Leader's new teachers will work for free because Hubert will kindly ask them to do so, and Doro will print books herself while Caspar will, on his own, build all the furnitures needed to get a school running.
Of course, they will do so freely, because Fodlan Adrestia became an utopia without the evil lizard lady's influence.
As for education in general, IRL (save for several states lol) people are willing to afford time and ressources to go to school or to let their children go to school if they don't have anythign "better" to do, like, idk, working to get enough money to feed said children.
or maybe Supreme Leader's Adrestia will have some sort of social minimal aid system - that isn't funded through taxes because taxes BaD - so Adrestians can send their children to school without being afraid of not being able to eat next morning thanks to that financial support?
But let's not talk too much about "semantics" and the intricacies of this totally canon version of what is going to happen after Tru Piss/when Supreme Leader kicks the bucket in non Tru Piss routes -
Anon, did you know feudalism BaD?

It's insane to me that this entire "debate" (if it can even be called that) is literally just
trans people, jewish people, black people literally everyone who has been hurt by bigotry: hey please don't spend $70 on a game about pro-slavery and fascism when a lot of that money will go to its creator who is publically bigoted and uses her massive amounts of wealth to fund the eradication of marginalized groups
and the response to that was: fuck you why can't you just let people enjoy things, harry potter personally saved my life
like. it's extremely telling that so many people value their own entertainment and nostalgia over the lives of others. jkr is such a horrible, despicable person and literally all people are saying is that yeah you shouldn't be giving a modern day nazi that much money when they constantly bring people to the alt right and donate that money to every anti-human rights organization you could think of.
and no i don't think sending people death threats is okay but at the same time, you don't get to act surprised, defensive, or victimized when people call you out for giving money to a fucking nazi.

I have no ties whatsoever to South Africa but watching the lawyers (also featuring an Irish woman bc the Irish understand too due to their history) makes me tear up and be so proud and the fact videos are being shared that went viral, also of soldiers exposing themselves while committing atrocities, this is in part the work of all of us (re)posting, sharing, spreading! Don’t tell me sharing posts does nothing! I know it seemed so defeating at times when the follower count and the story views dropped RAPIDLY but every single voice did matter in the end when they all came together ✊ South Africa’s legal team did amazing work

I think that some of the frustration that people express is that poor teaching is not unique to the US. The US history curriculum is actually far better than what it was like in my home country. I studied in an American high school for a month and was introduced to a lot of stuff I'd never been taught about ever. Having one world history class was more than I ever had. Most people's history education ends at about World War Two. So I think it can be frustrating to see people blame the education system solely for this global ignorance because that argument rests on the idea that America is uniquely bad, uniquely propagandistic, etc. There is something to be said that the US has a uniquely insular culture because of its international cultural dominance. It doesn't have to look outside of itself because it's always the most important country in the room. I don't know.
But I also think that turning ignorance into a moral failing is an unhelpful and sometimes cruel thing.
