hi! yes, I will be talking about this now! extensively!

favourite female character: allison <3 — for some context, if you haven't seen my Many Opinions on this show, please know that as far as 'canon' is concerned, MY canon is only season 1. so when I'm talking about the good parts, that's what I mean. — anyway, allison! she is so set aside at the start (alongside luther, sort of) because most of the siblings had their lives ruined by their powers as children. but allison? allison won the superpowers LOTTERY. so it wasn't until she was an adult that those consequences caught up to her, and as a result of that adult perspective, she handles it with such grace and maturity (even when it almost KILLS her) and she KNOWS that she needs to take on that responsibility to better herself. that she can't just blame it on her childhood and be done with it. but even when allison is trying to be better she's also, like, casually insane. she broke into the house of some guy her sibling was dating like that's a normal thing to do. so the fact that she's TRYING to be better, but she's also just as insane as the rest of them, creates this fascinating tension within her character. I just love her she's so so so complex and interesting

favourite male character: klaus! again, season 1 only, but I simply love him. it's so interesting having this character who, if he could do what he can do in the comics, would just... stop the apocalypse. like, technically, it still happens in apocalypse suite, but you know when that big chunk of moon rock flies at the earth? yeah, klaus just catches it. single-handedly. because he has telekinesis and, like, a MILLION other powers. and season 1 couldn't let that happen, because they had a PLAN (which was so good and did not come to fruition but I can see the ghost of it. I know. I know), so they gave klaus reasons for not being that overpowered - he was traumatised as a child, literally locked in a mausoleum with corpses (which is horrendous enough WITHOUT his ability to see ghosts!), and spent the rest of his life up to the start of the show trying to get rid of it via being constantly high. because he doesn't have the control to just get rid of the ghosts himself, he doesn't have that confidence and belief in himself necessary to get to that point. until! things happen! and suddenly klaus KNOWS about all this potential he has, and he WANTS it! because there's a ghost he actually WANTS to see!!!! (besides his brother, I guess, lol.) the energy around klaus's potential in season 1 is so electric, which is because they were setting him up to be the next viktor and cause the apocalypse after being seen as useless and unimportant by his family for years, thus blindsiding them with the reality that the only way to save the world is to BE A FAMILY and stop letting each other be driven to the point of a psychological break by their father's cruelty and brainwashing! they made me care so much about klaus because that was supposed to be THE POINT!!!!

worst female character & worst male character: literally anyone who was created from season 2 onwards. they're all basically original characters, which means they're not pulled from the source material (not even a twist on the source material, like dave instead of the vietnamese woman klaus had a baby with, or the little girl on the bike, or, I believe, detective patch - all of which happened in season 1, and all of which worked) - but the new people were just made up by Some Guy who essentially took over the show and ruined it, and they all SUCK they're so bad and flat and uninteresting and then they die or whatever and no one cares, and everything lila represents personally offends me. as does the very abrupt and long-lasting narrative sympathy for reginald hargreeves. that was the biggest, earliest red flag, he DRUGGED A FOUR YEAR OLD what are they DOING

brotp: five and klaus! I have written many fics about it, lol. their mostly-prickly, partly-sweet dynamic in season 1 compelled me so strongly

“kids spend too much time on their devices” well what else are they supposed to do? there’s no corner shops with pinball machines in them on every corner anymore. there’s no malls or stores in small towns for teens to hang out in without being suspected of shoplifting or kicked out for loitering. sidewalks are too broken for them to ride their bikes and there’s no bike lane in the street to make it safe for them. i just don’t understand where they expect these kids to go when they keep taking places away from them. and yes having no safe public places for them is what leads a lot of teens into addiction if they end up at a place where people aren’t truly looking out for them.

Nona the Ninth is one of my favorite books of all time. Not just because it's Locked Tomb, but it is the purest form of one of the big messages the series is trying to divulge.

The price of love is grief. We will never be free of it as long as we love anything at all. Our family, friends, our pets, even beloved media. Anything that connects that deeply to us that we love it will leave a gaping hole when it's gone.

But no one rejects loving to avoid grief. Every one of the characters holds on desperately to something they love, to levels that seem unhealthy to us. They want the perks without the cost.

John is holding on to a world and people that died 10k years ago.

The lyctors cling desperately to their cavaliers memories, to the point of being willing to end the 9 houses to honor them.

Cam held on to Pal, Pal held on to Dulcie. Harrow held on to Gideon so hard she disappeared her from her memory to avoid the grief she would pay for the privelege of caring for her.

But Nona loves indiscriminately. She loves the polluted sky, she loves the sad people, she loves the stray dogs and her friends and her teachers and Varun. She loves Pyrrhas lying ass, she loves Camilla and Palemedes, she loves crown and even cares about Judith. Nona isn't afraid of grief, because to her all that love balances it out. Nona is the only one in the end willing to pay the price for that 6 months of unconditional love. She knows from the beginning of the book that her own days are numbered, but she doesn't shy from it and avoid loving.

She loves all that much harder.

"If you could see your whole life, start to finish, would you change anything?" The movie Arrival (2016) approaches this same theme. If you knew what you'd lose, would you go back to avoid it? Would you keep away from the people and things you knew you'd lose? Would you shy away from experiencing love just because it hurts?

right now, I suppose I've got alice in wonderland on my mind (I got it in my head that I needed to get chapter titles for one of my current writing projects from alice). I had to go through through the looking glass and re-highlight everything, because the highlighter I used before just WAS NOT showing up idk why I did that

anyway, something really fun about TTLG is how it builds on AIW - because the first one ends with the reveal that it was all a dream, right? the second one plays around with this, because the character of the red king is asleep, and tweedledum and tweedledee absolutely MENACE this poor girl like 'You're not real! you're just a sort of thing in his dream! if the king wakes up you'll be blown out like a candle!' and then alice bursts into tears because she's 7 (and a half) years old. everyone's so horrible to her, I'd fight the terror twins for alice. protect the small child

anyway what I like about this is it comes up a few more times - at the end of that scene, alice is like 'these people are morons' and just DECIDES to stop crying over their nonsense and be aggressively cheerful about continuing the conversation, she's iconic. but it comes up later, I can't quite recall the specific context, and alice is suddenly SO MAD ABOUT IT LMAO. it made her burst into tears before but now she's like 'you know WHAT. I don't LIKE being in someone else's dream. I hope this is MY dream and not the King's. I have half a mind to wake him up and see what happens!' AND THAT'S JUST SO CHARMING TO ME IDK WHY. THIS LITTLE GIRL'S COMPLETELY JUSTIFIED MOOD SWINGS. SHE'S SO INDIGNANT ABOUT MAYBE BEING IN SOMEONE ELSE'S DREAM I LOVE IT

oh, I never actually said, but this is all left very vague. the book ends with lewis carroll asking the reader whose dream they think it was, so it's up to interpretation, but also it's written for children and I think it was probably the King's dream. mostly because he's the Red King, and the Red Queen is much nicer (although that's not a very high standard) to Alice in this one, which would make sense if she's a 'sort of thing' in her husband's dream, as opposed to the little girl whose head she tried to chop off last time

tldr; alice in wonderland is a sweetheart and an icon and I would commit unspeakable crimes for her

He's afraid of becoming a joke and he really likes not taking the first step when doing something fun. I'm actually speechless about how open he is about it, in these 2 moments.

guess what new fandom plagued my summer!! guess which characters ruined my entire life!!!

surprise i'm alive and i've actually been rotting over TMA for around 4 months. i've had time to process the sheer disaster it's wrought upon my brain so it's now time to post again (but for how long? stay tuned)
