Okay this is NOTHING like my usual content but because S2 of HBO Max’s “Velma” show came out, I have arrived to say that for some reason I have the sudden temptation to try to rework it, because as bad as it is, there is SO MUCH potential they could have used when it comes to characters specifically that the writers WASTE HARD because they aren’t competent at all.

Like, they REFUSE to give any of the ‘likeable’ main characters some sort of self-awareness about shitty behavior and REFUSE to make them change and develop as characters to the point where the supposedly “alpha male parody” character ends up being the most likeable and interesting (yes, this is me confessing that I sat through the entirety of “Velma” S1 for Fred LMAO), and even then they just make him the absolute butt of the joke.

Honestly, unpopular opinion, but I think the idea of “Velma” being a bit grittier with their protagonists having a little bit more unlikeable traits could have worked, but they didn’t use it well and just turned it into a freakshow lovechild of “Family Guy” and a Temu version of “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia”.

Then again, I’m not that familiar with the “Scooby Doo” franchise as a whole (I’ve only watched a couple old episodes), so if I were to rework “Velma”, the characters probably will still be at least a little OOC, but at the same time, the “Velma” versions are so OOC already, it fails as an adaptation/reboot of Scooby-Doo from the very first episode- At this point, any possible rewrite of the show is to expand on what it was possibly going for just so it can try to stand on its own 😭

I have no problem with characters being race swapped since it promotes inclusivity and other races' representation in popular media.

But.

If those other races are written purely out of stereotypes and is not written by people of those races, then hun, that's a problem and I'm absolutely disgusted with how the creators treat it as their magnum opus

the realisation that the first piece of media i bonded with people over was scooby doo is insane.

i made my first group of friends at age 5 by playing scooby doo and running around the playground where it was glorified 'it' but we claimed to be the characters.

i know everyone’s already giving their hot takes about the velma show lmfao but what makes me genuinely sad is how badly they treat the characters. like i watched a clip on twitter where velma disparages fred in court (after having falsely accused him of murder!) and she calls him a small-dicked privileged manchild who can’t even feed himself and like?

i don’t think mindy understands that all the characters in scooby doo are beloved. people don’t want to see daphne be a vapid “bitch” (which velma literally calls her that) or fred be misogynistic. we don’t want to see shaggy be some loser.

so like, who is this show for exactly? it’s obviously not for scooby fans because it’s too cynical about both the characters and the fanbase. it’s not for kids because it’s an adult show. it’s too stupid to appeal to adults. it’s a weird self-insert fantasy with scooby doo slapped onto it. mindy’s just playing the same loser character she always plays/writes to project on. daphne’s too bitchy, shaggy doesn’t have a single character trait similar to the og shaggy, fred’s too much of an asshole, velma’s judgemental and rude. like. WHO IS THIS FORRRRR.
