"She's gotta be here somewhere," Ivan grumbled, as he lead the other two men to the spot in the woods where he last encountered his niece.

Soon after Mary ran off, he retreated to hide and dispose of the body, as well as recruited both of her still living paternal figures to aid in locating her.

"Yeah, no shit," Adam sighed, stressed, "Tracks are sloppy and all over the place. Like a damn animal came trough instead."

"Don't call her that!" Vikram objected with a glare. Both men were met with well-aimed slaps to the back of their heads by Ivan, who's own expression said more than enough.

Their attention went back to the task at hand, thankfully,

All was quiet for the next few minutes, as Adam moved to lead the others, quick to spot the footsteps left behind the teenager, the imprints of clear even on the leaf-covered ground.

As much as it felt wrong to use hunting experience to track down a scared child, he just had to deal with it. They all did.

"Looks like she slowed down to walk here. Hopefully means she's close," Adam pointed out the distance between the footsteps, before looking up ahead to see the general direction they lead.

"... That hers?"

"What?" Vikram asked.

Adam pointed to the dirtied pink sweater, soaking wet from the morning dew. Traces of mud littered it.

"... It is," Vikram confirmed, and was backed up by Ivan.

"Yeah. She was wearing that when I found her."

The shortest of the three tried to not overthink it too much, and simply went to pick it up, unceremoniously slinging the dirty piece of clothing across his shoulder.

"You're seriously keeping it?"

"The less traces of her, the better."

They kept walking in silence, accompanied only by the soft winds and crunch of leaves under their boots.

... What was that?

Adam stopped abruptly, straining his ears.

"What are you-"

"Sh!" he clamped a hand over Vikram's mouth, focusing.

"I hear something," he whispered, putting all his focus on discerning what that sound is.

...

She's crying.

As quickly as his feet would let him, he turned to the direction of the cries and ran, leaving the other two to follow, cursing at him.

Nothing else mattered. Absolutely nothing.

He neared her location: under the branches of an old tree which species he was not bothered to identify.

Adam couldn't give less of a shit about how his knees popped and ached as he dropped down in front of her, engulfing her in a firm hug, as Mary's own breath hitched.

His heart ached at the pitiful whines and sobs leaving her.

Instinct takes over, and Adam finds himself pressing the teen's head against his chest, so she can listen to his heartbeat, as he murmurs reassurances meant for her and her alone, especially as his companions approach the scene, catching their breath and taking in the sight of the girl.

"Viss ir labi, viss is kārtībā. Neviens tev neko pāri nedarīs," he started, wiping her tears, "Tev viss labi? Asinis? Zilumi?"

The little shake of her head did wonders for his own nerves.

"Runāt vari?" he asked, giving her a few seconds to answer. He hummed at the second shake of her head.

Cautiously, Adam picked her up. Vikram cringed slightly at how filthy she had gotten in such a short amount of time. A potential list of contracted diseases crossed his mind.

"Says she's okay and uninjured. Just doesn't want to talk."

"I'll still check her over by the car," Vikram states. Neither objected to it.

With one last glance at the shaken up girl, Adam asks her a final question.

"Mājās?"

She nods.

Yeah. Home.

in light of recent events, i am seeing a lot of posts talking about punching nazis and fighting nazis. and that is good and all, but at the end of the day it is worthless if your activism starts and ends at condemning the nazi salute. antisemitism and nazism are more than sieg heiling and spray painting swastikas on a wall.

if you truly care about nazism, learn about its characteristics. learn what it really means. learn how it has affected and still affects jewish people. learn about antisemitism, about dogwhistles, about stereotypes. learn how to identify it when it's hidden, when it's not coming from right-wing white supremacists who openly hate jews, when it's coming from friends, or relatives, or other left-wing groups. identify what antisemitic beliefs you hold. fight antisemitism even when it is directed at jews you don't like or you disagree with.

and, above everything, support the jewish community. learn about their history, their culture, their customs. love jews more than you hate nazis.

international holocaust remembrance day is next week (january 27th). if you truly want to be an ally to the jewish community, condemning elon musk is not enough.
